Executive Updates
Here we are already, just six weeks out from the biggest events of the NZIPP calendar year, being held this year at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland: First up we have the ‘Iris Awards”, starting on Thursday the 1st of August and ending on Saturday the 3rd of August. Here you can watch and listen to the top judges in Australasia express what they consider makes an award winning image. The debates are the best photographic education available. Saturday is also Industry day, with the doors being open to the general public to the largest photography trade show around. Don’t miss this if you are interested in keeping up with the latest photographic gizmos and gadgets. A recommendation would be to make a full day of it, booking in to the evening public seminar, by Internationally renowned New Zealand photographer Rachael Hale McKenna. Rachael will be presenting her stunning photographs and telling you the stories behind them. With Rachael also presenting at the Infocus Conference, which starts the following day, only consider this if you aren’t attending the conference.
If you are after more, then register and attend the ‘Infocus Conference’ starting on Sunday the 4th of August and plug into a feast of photography presented by some of the worlds leading photographers. Please view the NZIPP web site for details (www.nzipp.org.nz). The extended programme we have on offer this year is because the NZIPP is turning 75 and on the Sunday evening we have our Jubilee night to celebrate it this. Again see the website for details. Finally, to end all the celebrations, on the Monday evening we have our Gala Award night dinner when all the awards are announced and everyone can celebrate their successes. Either way you just have to be there. Just one small word of
WARNING.
Book early or you may miss out as this is going to be big!

Commercial Directors Report
JULY 2013
The New Darkroom Its that time of the year when I trawl through folders looking for some imagery that I have shot that could have some merit for our upcoming awards. I hope that you are doing better than me in that regard. Last year we had a record number of entries in commercial category and I hope that it will be the same again this year. Last year I was lucky enough to find most of the imagery from jobs that I had shot. Not sure about this year though, may have to be a bit more creative. Have just downloaded Photoshop CC, maybe that will inspire me to get on to it. If you are anything like me you have odd folders marked “interesting stuff” and ”useful textures” I also have one called “inspiration” and it is this one that contains images by other photographers that on one hand make me feel like giving up (can I produce anything that good) and on the other motivate me to try. Once upon a time we had out own special place, the dark room, and the creations that we made in the darkroom were the result of special skills. Not so any more Photoshop is the new darkroom and the tools in it are available to every man and his dog. So it is hardly surprising that most agencies and design companies just want the raw file! How bloody boring is that, as a profession we have lost many of the tools of our trade. So when you produce a masterpiece through painstaking clear cutting and layering multiple images to create something original and win an award for it be proud, you have taken back some of the tools of your trade. Now go for it and good luck. Shoot well and prosper

Portrait Directors Report
This is the time of the year when many, many photographers are head down emerged in Iris Awards preparation. You hear a constant chatter online about shoots planned, images to be edited, feelings of excitement and despair, its all part of the journey. With this also comes the comments from others who don’t see the value in entering, some don’t believe their clients care whether they’ve won or entered awards or not so why enter? My answer to this is really? Are you sure your clients don’t care or maybe you just haven’t sold them on it and enticed them to become invested in the process. And maybe this is a missed opportunity to grow your business. I was chatting to a fellow photographer about this over coffee (of course) and I was sharing how my clients become so invested in it, they wait for updates of how I’ve done, they cant wait to see what images I’ve entered and they always talk about them when they come into the studio and see them on the wall, not to mention the Facebook craziness if an image featuring a client wins an award! My fellow photographer shared how her experience is the same, her clients are excited for her and her clients are also invested in the process. Because again, shes sold them on it. So how do you sell them on it? Pretty easy really. Talk about it. Talk about the excitement of it all, the challenge to push yourself, the personal and professional growth that comes from having your work judged. The feeling you get when you take something from concept through to an award winning image. When I look back on my Facebook stats for my business page, one of the highest peaks last year was in the week of the awards, the interest it created caused a huge spike in traffic to my page. When I was a blogger, it was also one of the busiest times for hits on my blog. So clearly…. they do care, they are interested and they love to see the results. Its all part of the story of us as business owners, the story of what we do and who we are and many a successful company will tell you that success is built on story telling and everyone wants to be part of the story. My story is shared with all the likers on my Facebook page leading up to, during and after the awards and only positive things come from it. If I help them see the value in it, they become invested in the story and they come on that ride with me…. and what a ride it is. See you there.

Wedding Directors Report
JULY 2013
Last chance… This is my last Proreport wedding directors report so I thought I seize my last chance to talk about some Q stuff. It seems no matter how much we put out there and how many Q workshops we run there are always lots and lots of questions about the Q process. So here goes…my last chance to answer some of them… What do I need to do to pass? Basically you need to convince the panel that they could confidently recommend you to a good friend or family member. That’s the short answer; the longer answer is you need to score a ‘professional standard’ on most of the judging criteria. Does it need to be any particular type of album? No, but it does need to be an album of a professional standard. The printing and colour management both need to be of professional quality. Is it worth the effort? The answer to this is very personal. For me it was about being confident in my ability and pricing. For others it’s about measuring themselves against the industry standard…and for some it’s about adding one more proof to their clients that they are worth it. In the end it’s up to you to do it for your own reasons. But I do know that everyone who does it says they learned so much from the process of examining and critiquing their own work that it was worth it…even if they didn’t pass the first time. And that’s really the main point…to quote Jason Mraz…you win some, you learn some. At the end of the day it’s a chance to push yourself, to expand your boundaries and to test yourself and see where you can continue to improve. And that’s got to be a good thing right?

Honours Council Report
Just Do It! It is hard to believe that in just four weeks judging will be starting for this year’s Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards, and if you are having a little panic about it all be assured that you are not alone in feeling like this. With Online Registrations open for another few weeks, there is still time to select, prepare and fine tune your entries. It would also seem we will likely see a higher number of first time entrants this year, and it has been great watching, and at times commenting, on some of the social media feeds. With so much interest being shown I think the Honours Team have every right to think this year will be the biggest and best awards yet, and wouldn’t that be the icing on the cake as the NZIPP celebrates its 75th anniversary. For those who are new to the process here are a few little tips: •
Ensure you read through the Call for Entries document fully, it does have everything you need to know
•
Read each category criteria carefully to make sure you enter your prints into the appropriate category
•
Check your image size meets the requirement of being “no smaller than 18cm on the longest side”
•
Have your prints mounted professionally to ensure they are secure within the window mount
•
Attach the relevant metadata to the digital file
•
Check the file size and format is correct
•
Remember your own profile image
•
Register your entries online by the specified deadline - there is NO extension to the final 24 July deadline.
It does take courage to put your work up in front of a group of “experts” for critique and assessment, but be assured that prints are judged anonymously. While not all prints will receive a comment or an award, the process you have undertaken to get to that point will have been very educational and worthwhile. It will provide you with knowledge and insight to move forward in your business with a little more confidence and a few more skills. I want to include here a comment made by Rachael Kelly on a Facebook feed. Her comments are very appropriate for those considering entering for the first time: “… if you really want to enter something then just do it!! I am entering this year. Regardless of the outcome I am looking at this process as a way to make myself learn about fine art papers, printing and taking a close constructive look at both my photos and my editing. So even if I get nothing in the way of awards I will still take away an extra set of skills I didn’t have before hand.” (thanks Rachael) This report is the last one before this year’s awards, with the Honour’s Team about to head into what is our busiest time. We hope to see and encourage you to join us at the Pullman, between 1–3 August, for the award’s judging listening and learning.

I have been in business as a commercial photographer for 24 years and a member of the NZIPP for as I have fulfilled the roll as Wellington regional chairman for three years, and in August I will have completed one year as the commercial director. As a member of the NZIPP board I feel that I contributed well and am happy to stand for commercial director for one more year. My philosophy is to encourage as many people as possible who are earning an income from photography to be a part of the NZIPP in order to maintain a level of quality, education and sensible pricing. In the commercial area I would like to explore the role of the commercial photographer in today’s highly competitive market and look at ways that our members can stay on top of their game. At his point in time there are no other contenders for this role on the board and would encourage others to seriously consider taking on the roll in the future.
Back for a second stint, being older & wiser. I’ve been an NZIPP member for 25 years, of what is now our 75th year, the urge to share & help is still within me. The challenges for all of us never go away, but together we can make them easier to tackle. In my time as a member, the main ingredient I see missing in most people’s businesses is a lack of confidence. This confidence differs amongst individuals, but often revolves around pricing, presentation & marketing aggressively. This is hardly surprising as many of you are hard working one-person operations with no one to bounce off day to day. Well now you can bounce off me, if you wish! Anyone who has been to any of my presentations over the years will tell you I pull no punches & I share all I have learnt and happy to listen. If elected as Portrait Director you can have the confidence to know that I am involved in photography boots & all. My studio is operating better than it ever has & we strive always to utilise best business practices. As always I will do my very best to add value to the board, all the while moving us all forward to a place of profit, in what we all love to do. PRO REPORT Member Magazine of the NZIPP

Board Nominations Continued... Karyn Flett MNZIPP
As my time as Acting Portrait Director comes to an end, I am armed & ready to put into action all the ideas & plans I have had over the last couple of months if given the opportunity. I’ve been passionate about NZIPP since I went to my first meeting & firmly believe in everything it stands for as a Photographer & what it means to our clients. Its imperative to offer a welcoming hand to new photographers & those who wish to join in the future, had a warm welcoming hand not be extended to me I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be the photographer I have grown to be & will continue to grow into. As care taker of the role, Ive had a couple of months to identify several areas that I see as needing some fine tuning, care & attention, with the Q submission process being high on the list. My goal is to make the process more transparent giving people a more clearly defined understanding of what is required & combining this with more assistance to those wishing to submit & planning to submit in the future. The more Qualified NZIPP Photographers the better & it’s a huge goal of mine to promote, enhance & clarify this process. There’s no denying there is some concern at the amount of new photographers to the industry who are ill equipped or lack knowledge of what it takes & what is needed to have a successful business while maintaining industry standards. I believe the key to protecting the industry & maintaining standards is education & assistance for new photographers. I was once a Mother who got a camera & decided to go into business, yes ill equipped but with a passion & a dream & I learnt a few things a long the way – some of them simple things that I wish I had known sooner, some things were more complex but I had no where to turn, no one to ask. I wanted a career that gave me something more than Motherhood (as much as I love them) so I threw myself into it, stumbling plenty of times along the way, sometimes on little bumps in the road, sometimes on big road blocks! I wont forget what that was like & how beneficial it would have been had there been someone to help me see a better way of getting there & helping me understand the boxes that I should have ticked along the way. As much as I am dedicated to every person in the Portrait industry, a big part of what I want to achieve as Portrait Director is to encourage industry standards for those new to the industry, I do see that a large portion of the industry who are struggling are new photographers & many walking a road I have travelled. If we can get people off on the right foot, it is hugely beneficial for the industry & will help maintain or promote some industry standards. At the end of the day the goal of everyone on the Board is to promote the industry, grow membership with a view to making this a better place for all & I am excited about continuing to be part of what we are all striving for.

NZIPP AGM & Board Nominations
Late last year I was reminded just how long ago it was I started shooting weddings. I’d just done an engagement shoot for my clients Steve and Dana and I was dropping off the canvas they’d purchased when Steve dropped a bombshell on me… “ I think you photographed my first wedding” he said. “No, couldn’t have been” I quickly replied. Steve continued “ I am so sure it was you, it was 1995 and you were fresh out of Polytech, we’d booked a guy but he’d accidentally double booked so he put you onto us at the last minute” Then the penny dropped, I had flashbacks of the shoot, the bride was wearing a dress with giant sleeves and Madonna-esque lace gloves, I had photographed them sitting in a little dinghy on the pond. I cringed as I imagined what I might have shot back then. I photographed Dana and Steve’s wedding in February, and Steve keeps promising to bring round the album from his first wedding… I have to say I’m partly curious, it will be fun to see just how much my shooting has changed since all those years ago. It’s always been photography for me. Hooked from the age of 15 when I spent many hours in the darkroom. I traveled the world for all of my twenties working on cruise ships as a photographer and then in the management team. It was great fun, but a far stretch from being creative photography. The weddings shoots we had on board were not much over an hour to cover the ceremony, group photos and location….. Some days we’d shoot 3 or 4 in a row so it was a real factory line. It sure made me a speedy shooter though! Occasionally we’d get shore side weddings and I got the opportunity to shoot weddings in Barbados and Maui. Working on cruise ships we were immersed in an industry hell bent on providing excellent service and we learnt so much of what we have been to apply to our own business over the last few years. I am really passionate about providing outstanding service to our clients. I met my husband (and business partner), Neil whilst working on ships and we finally moved back to Christchurch in 2005. After a summer of drinking cocktails and enjoying our freedom we set up Tandem Photography in 2006. We also joined NZIPP pretty much as soon as we started the business and have learnt so much from our peers over this time. Weddings have been the core of our business right from the start. The last decade or so has seen such an amazing transition with wedding photography, I think we’re lucky to be part of that. Our clients (mostly) respect and enjoy creativity so there is always drive to push yourself, which personally I thrive on. We run our business from our home office out in the country where we keep company with a couple of cows, Jasper the cat…. and our two children Olivia and Arabella. We also have recently renovated our second studio which is in our local Town, Rangiora. Well, why did I agree to be nominated for the role of wedding director?…. Over my time with NZIPP I’ve come to realize how imperative the role of the board, the chairs, the committees, all those volunteers who help make things tick is. As photographers we’re a very small industry and having a professional body is vital to the overall success of the industry we all love. It just feels like the right time to put my hand up and play my part in making things happen.

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Auckland/Northland Reg. Meeting Venue: TBC, Auckland Date: July 10th, 2013
Auckland/Northland Region June has proven to be a big month for Auckland with the opening of our flagship event the Iris Awards exhibition as part of Auckland Festival of Photography. Arguably the biggest festival of it’s kind in New Zealand helps us promote the NZIPP to prospective members, cements relationships with sponsors and of course get’s the NZIPP brand out to thousands of photography enthusiasts and the general public. On behalf of the Auckland region we want to thank the regions that contributed it’s greatly appreciated. With the rapid approach of the Iris Awards, we also hosted what has now become an annual event “Mock Judging”. Our members bring along prints to have them judged by experienced judges in preparation for the Iris Awards. This year our judges Chris Traill and Harry Jansen offered opinions and feedback on over 50 images. For our July meeting we plan to get a bit technical with Photoshop as well as an update on the wonderful world of Fusion.

Jake Thomas

Jake Thomas (NZIPP Creative Wedding Photographer of the Year 2012) gave a very animated & entertaining talk on his passion for wedding photography, it’s clear here is a guy who loves his job! Jake shared his journey of assisting his uncle photographing weddings in NSW & then going out on his own & all the lessons he learnt - including having a budget! Jake moved to NZ with his family to peruse a career making ice-cream. Lucky for everyone that wasn’t to be & Jake Thomas is 110% committed to being a photographer & ensures he has balance to include his family in his plan. Jake realises in this current ‘want everything now’ world, that clients just can’t wait 3 weeks to see their images. So within 1 week of their wedding, Jake presents his clients a slideshow of the wedding day highlights. Jake then showed us one of these from a wedding photographed the week before & we all went “Ohhh Aaah”. Well done Jake! We are very excited about our upcoming guest speaker for our July meeting (Monday 8 July, Rotorua) we have the one & only Jackie Ranken, NZ Photographer of the Year 2012! “My presentation will be about me, Jackie Ranken, I will share my photographic story & discuss how to I use & abuse the rules of composition in my work. I celebrate life by making photographs. After thirty years of dedicating myself to the discipline of photography I now feel I have earned the right to be ‘an artist’. I make photographs of ‘real things in real places’. My objective is to respond to the physical world in a way that is authentic & expressive. Though my art practice I am concerned with making images that transport a viewer to another time, place or experience.” All NZIPP members are welcome to come along to our July meeting.

Wellington Region Wow, what a day that became two days. As lead through to Iris Awards at end of July, Wellington have traditionally held a print judging that sort of sets the scene to how the process works, lets images be critiqued before final ‘performance’, also to revisit previous entries. This year as well as seasoned Award judges we had several locals who tested themselves in this new experience plus two special award winners who bought a different vision. Mike Hill and Jake Thomas were here as guests to add value to our print judging and talk about themselves at the evening meeting. This then rolled through to the following day when a group accompanied them to the Wellington City Gallery to look over the fantastic Gregory Crewdson exhibition. Then a coast walk at Makara. The Mike Hill and Jake Thomas presentations were frank and honest telling of two fascinating ‘back stories’ that gave each of them a perspective and a passion which carries through to explain their creative strengths and also drives their ‘life-control’. Each has achieved a life balance and position that enable them to select their clients, their volumes of business and locations. Each has hit a ‘sweet spot’ that balances family, business and creative intent. A well attended event held in a private function room at the Southern Cross in Te Aro .... the same venue we use for our Friday Cafe gatherings.

Otago/Southland Region This month we held our AGM in Gore at The Thomas Green Public House and were lucky enough to have Jackie Ranken be our guest speaker. Attached are some images from the print critiquing, Jackies talk and our screen showing our google plus hangout. The Missing Link
The Missing Link Written by Malcolm Somerville
One month from now many of you will be in Auckland for Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards, Infocus Conference and the 75th Anniversary celebrations. I will be back in Sydney on family matters. Others will be online: Face-booking, Tweeting and Skyping as the enthusiasm and results peek. What great tools we now have to enquire, talk to each other, broadcast to friends, clients ..... and countrymen. Underneath all that chat (or is it over the top), a lot of arithmetic is happening very fast. Just as your tiny, thin, inexpensive compact camera or smartphone has very clever algorithms, making ‘light-speed’ calculations to determine exposure, face recognition, focus, light value, red-eye reduction, adding location, time and date plus plus plus. As well storing stuff called metadata - lens, aperture, shutter speed, did the flash fire ... and all the other details. When I began writing the ‘Missing Link’ columns my intention was to illuminate what is not normally noticed, to draw conclusions and make a few summaries of trends. Even to point people to some of the interesting sites I visit and a few books worth reading. But change happens, the ability of anyone to do the searches, to take advise and read assessments from a number of blogs, from on-line friends, Facebook friends, suppliers, clients. For all the reasons that GCSB, N.S.A., PRISM, can easily and mostly legally ‘read’ and evaluate our activity, so too can we at a simpler but in a no less elegant way hunt out, drill down, classify and make use of the legal tools available to us. From that we gain better insight, make better decisions; and we do it a lot faster. That is why my purpose is mostly redundant now and new generations of photographers are better-equipped and better able to respond to their world. So from time to time I will continue to contribute but less regularly in future. What I would like to see is an open ‘Missing Link’ forum where a variety of members can point the rest of us at things of interest. I will throw something in from time to time too. So, signing off with a TVC that just gained a Gold for Saatchi and Saatchi, Sao Paulo, Brazil in last weeks Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. It features the Leica M. http://tinyurl.com/nr8fmhg

To complete a Waikato University Degree I need to complete an investigation study that can bring real value to an organisation at no cost. I need your help. We all have our own views to the questions above so let’s all contribute to the survey to be conducted in the next few months. A report will be published alongside the Pro-Report in November. The Questions have been formulated by selected senior NZIPP members. The survey will be done anonymously online and will take only half an hour of your time. Please start thinking about those questions above and finds some numbers from your 2007 and/or 2012 records that might relate to them.
