Presidents Report

JUNE 2013

There have been a few discussions going on in various chat rooms recently that have made me aware that there are still members who don’t quite know why they have joined the NZIPP, & what they get from it as members. Suggestions have been made that we should be running TV campaigns & producing print marketing material with which to communicate who we are. The reality is that we are a relatively small (almost 400 members now), voluntary, ‘not for profit’ organisation, who’s aims are to support & promote the profession of photography. As such we rely on the active involvement of our members in the promotion of our brand & it’s standards. Without our members doing this we just wouldn’t exist – nor would the profession of photography. We already advertise ourselves regularly through D-Photo, F11, Bride & Groom (plus with Infocus & Iris Awards we have a huge promotional drive & advertising to both members, non members & public). Our PRO REPORT goes out to hundreds more than just our membership. We hold monthly regional meetings to enable our members to share & learn the process of professional photography. We gain national industry sponsorship with which to run events such as the ‘Iris Awards’ & the ‘Infocus Conference’. These events then allow us to achieve a higher national profile as well as to educate our members. Here is a brief list of who we are & what we do offer our members: 1. We are a group of almost 400 like-minded creative working professional photographers. 2. We support each other & believe in each other. 3. We offer the photography buying public a brand that has set professional standards. 4. These standards are ratified every four years through the CPD program. 5. We offer both national as well as international educational programs through which our members can continue to grow & develop their skills & knowledge. 6. We offer a world-class awards program, which allows our members to stand out from the crowd. 7. We are affiliated with many Professional Photography groups world wide. 8. We only cost between $300 & $529 per year (depending on your membership type). 9. Our brand is 75 years old (which in itself gives us added credibility) 10. Without the members being equally active & supportive then the future of the organization will be in jeopardy. We need members to stand up both at local & national levels in order to maintain our newly gained momentum. All the time we are trying to lift the profile of the Institute in a way that gives benefits to the majority of the members. I realise that we can’t please all the people all the time but lets face it – we try.

Commercial Directors Report

Executive Update

Last month I commented on a problem that one of our members had with a client who maintained that the NZIPP contract seemingly negated the photographer from any responsibility whatsoever. And I suggested that the member point out to their client that they were covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. I neglected to say that this was a Wedding and Portrait contract not Commercial and it was quickly pointed out to me by a couple of seasoned commercial photographers that the CGA did not cover commercial work. Too right, if it is business-to-business the CGA doesn’t apply (there are other remedies the client can resort too). Try fronting up with a shoddy job or crappy service for a commercial client and you will soon find out. While on the subject of contracts (and this does apply to wedding and portrait contract as well as commercial ones), we are, as most of you are well aware, disadvantaged in NZ from the contractual point of view. Please tell me that you use an NZIPP contract for all your work! If not, ask yourself who owns the copyright on the last job you shot? You? No way… the person you shot the job for does. What’s more you know that “style” that you shot it in (the one that you are trying to become renowned for)? Well they own that too. What’s more they could stop you from using that style again because they own the copyright on that also. And while we are on a rant about what a sad lot we have, get yourselves up to speed on developments in the UK regarding “Orphaned Works”. I mentioned the worldwide debate on this subject late last year in the November Pro Report, since then the UK has passed the Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act, something that may effect how and where you put your images into cyberspace. Here are a few links for you to start a bit of your own googleising. The only advice I am offering here is: “know what is going on”. This will help you make better decisions about where and how you put your work on the BIG WWW. http://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/2013/orphan-works-the-new-law-in-theuk . http://news.msn.com/world/uks-instagram-act-will-your-photos-becomeehttp://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/protect-online-photos. htmveryone-elses On the good news front I have just saved around $1,300 on my business insurance buy just being a member of the NZIPP. Rothbury insurance has a great package for photographers that are only available to NZIPP members. I have my equipment covered for damage and theft anywhere in New Zealand, plus two million in public liability. This one member benefit more than pays for my NZIPP membership subscription for the year. If you are not a member yet this alone is worth joining us. If you are a member and not with Rothbury check them out Rothbury Otago. T: 03 477 8217 | 0800 855 455 W: www.rothbury.co.nz Shoot well and Prosper ; >)

Retouching. Its become a dirty word, people are retouching in a back room, locked away from judging eyes, feeling like they are about to be caught at any time! No but seriously, to retouch or not to retouch seems to have become a bit of a debate and you can almost start to feel like your doing a disservice to your client if you do….or don’t. I retouch and I’m proud of it, its all part of my service. Do I make people look 10 years younger, no. Do I make them look 10 kilos lighter, no (I save that little trick for photos of myself!). What I do do is make sure I am making people look like the best version of themselves on that day so that every time they look at that photo they feel good about themselves. That means I will soften the odd wrinkle, I wont remove it but I will soften it. I will push the wobbly bits in a bit so they have a smoother line – even the skinniest person can have a wobbly bit! I also even out skin tones a bit and remove any run away bits of hair or maybe the odd blemish that popped up that morning just because it was photo day! Its not about making people perfect, its not about turning back the clock, or the scales. Its about making my client feel great about themselves. Sure we can argue that they should love themselves just as they are, wouldn’t it be great if we were all that happy with ourselves. But in reality, we are all critical of those things we don’t like about ourselves and to have those things framed on the wall can sometimes be a deterrent to some people wanting to have family photos taken. How far you take retouching is up to the individual but I find the less is more approach to work best for me. A little soften here, a little liquify there just fine tunes an image. Its not about making people feel like they are less than perfect just as they are, for me its about making them feel great about who they are. If they don’t feel great, that family portrait isn’t going on the wall, guaranteed! I will do all I can to make them feel great during the session and pose them in a flattering way but when you have a Mum whos just had a baby, is trying to look well rested and relaxed while wrangling a wriggly toddler and a baby at the same time, then there is no amount of perfect posing that’s going to make her feel like she got 10 hours sleep last night and is looking fabulous! Retouching has its place and when used correctly only adds to your end result. Were not here to judge peoples self esteem or how happy they should be with themselves au natural and its not about expectations that society places on us to look perfect, its about making people feel like the best version of themselves and giving them a portrait they are proud to hang on the wall.

Wedding Directors Report

Executive Updates

I’m cursed with an irrational belief that everything will work out. I’m incurably optimistic. It’s a curse because it means that I say yes to everything, convinced that it’ll work out, that the path will smooth before me, that I can do it all. Except sometimes I can’t...sometimes I can’t do everything. I don’t see why not. But apparently it’s true. So I’m forced to admit that starting a portrait studio almost from scratch, maintaining (and hopefully growing) my existing wedding photography business, being a half decent parent AND being wedding director has become a bit much for me. So I’m moving on from the role…as of the AGM in August there will be a new wedding director. Which brings me to my next point…have a think about who you would like to see in the role. And have a wee soul search about whether you can see yourself in the role. It has been an incredibly rewarding three years and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Being on the board is hard work (I’m not going to lie) but it is very rewarding. I came in to the job with a list of things I wanted to see change within the institute and I feel very proud of being a part of that change. I’ve worked with some amazingly dedicated people and I’ve met some ‘rock stars’ and some future rock stars that hardly anyone even knows about yet. So…my point (and I do have one) please give me a call or an email if you’re thinking about the wedding director role and you think you’ve got some stuff on your list that we’d all benefit from (or you know someone else who has). And I’d like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to my fellow board members, current and past, the honours team and NZIPP’s fabulous staff… you are all really cool people and it’s been a privilege to work with you.

“RUNS IN CIRCLES TEARING OUT HAIR” “An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.” Buddha As at the time of writing, May 23 (thanks Harry for the Mac Widget Time Countdown idea):

The title of this article comes from a comment on an “NZIPP photography group (members only)” Facebook thread (thanks Karyn). From this, and other’s comments, I can see that I am not the only one, stressing just a little over what I’m going to enter into the awards this year. So, if you fall into this camp too, be assured that you are not alone. As we all know, the ideas for and the creation of a photographic image can be as simple or as complex as we want to make it. This, in many ways depends on the purpose of the outcome. When it comes to entering awards there is the need and pressure to go well beyond the extra mile to come up with something special, something we hope will wow the judges, and something that stands true to who we are as a person and as a photographer. It seems to be this pressure in itself that at times cripples us from moving forward to taking action and coming up with the goods. I’m pleased to say that over the years I have not let myself down in this department and have in the end always managed to produce something I am proud of and something I feel is worthy of entering. This comes mainly through pure determination and what I guess has become a bit of a compulsion: to keep entering; to keep challenging myself; to keep developing and refining my style; and, to keep doing something I enjoy. For me, the determination manifests itself through many, many (perhaps too many) hours, days and weeks of ideas festering in my head trying to gather some sort of traction; regularly waking up in the very early hours thinking about an image and unable to go back to sleep; the long, and perhaps not always healthy, hours of working on the computer until the eyes glaze over; the deliberating, the uncertainty and self-doubts; and the agonizing over the smallest details.

However, I have to say that the frustrations, the ups and downs, and the journey this process takes me on, is ultimately worthwhile. I love creating imagery, and I love the process that is involved with it. With the final entry deadline (July 24) not all that far away, and knowing there will very soon be other priorities in regards running the awards, like many of you I both foresee and dread the many late nights ahead. This will however culminate in the greatest feeling – the feeling of pride I always get when I mount my prints and look at them one last time as I pack them in my print case, and get them ready to take to the couriers. Doesn’t all this sound very familiar? I know many of you are experiencing this exact same existence – the rollercoaster ride of what is “The Awards”. All I can say is hang in there, dig deep and enjoy the process, find some little distractions along the way to keep you sane and visualise the end rewards. Remember, we wouldn’t be doing it if we didn’t love it! As a sign of our own enthusiasm for the awards, and to provide a little extra help with deciphering the Call for Entries document be sure to keep your eyes out for the great video clips Honours are releasing. Announcements of these, and the links, will be published on the NZIPP Facebook Page. Last but not least, for added confirmation that the awards are fast approaching, the Iris Awards Online Entry Registration will be open from 9am, Saturday 1 June, just to cater for all those VERY organised entrants out there, with a reminder that the final online entry deadline is 4pm, Wednesday 24 July.

Kind Regards

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Auckland/Northland Reg. Meeting Iris Awards 2012 Touring Print Exhibition Opening Venue: Vero Centre, Auckland Date: 5th June, 2013

Auckland/Northland Region It is with some sadness that I announce that Talia Stephens has stepped down from her role as Regional Chairperson. Talia is moving on to focus on her continually growing business and an increased workload, which does include moving to a bigger and better studio in Parnell. On behalf of both the committee and myself we would like to thank Talia for her hard work over the last few years. As a result I have moved on from my previous role as Treasurer to take on the challenge of Chairperson and we also have a new addition to our committee. Sarah Mountford who has recently joined us to take on the role of treasurer. Our May meeting was hosted by Apix, we kicked the meeting off with a focus on off camera flash and speedlights. Resident expert Steve Mathews walked us through a huge range of accessories and configurations. The second part of the evening was dedicated to getting to know 3 of our Auckland members in a segment we call “expose yourself” Full time portrait photographer Justin Aitkin led us off taking us on a journey around the world with some stunning portraits and landscapes from Africa through to Asia. Our second member was Amy Cope, her studio is solely dedicated to new born photography. Amy showed us how she progressed as a photographer right from when she started and things where a little nervous to today where she creates beautiful newborn portraits guaranteed to bring a tear to any new mums eyes. Finally we where treated to the life and times of Brett Lees a familiar name to most wedding photographers. Brett has been in the industry for longer than most and he offered up an interesting perspective on the recent history of wedding photography as well as giving us a brief insight into the challenging world of chrome photography. We are now looking forward to June where we host the launch of the Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography 2012 Touring Print Exhibition as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography.

Wellington Region For our May meeting we had a great turnout, on a night that was shouting winter is here. A lot of new young faces too who were thirsty for the reality of the business of business. NZIPP Commercial Director Terry Wreford Hann had titled it “How to Price a 10 X 8” - in a way it was and in a way it wasn’t. It was a lot more than that but it gave a process that ultimately would help to establish a more realistic price for anything; without sending you broke. Or at least knowing why you are going broke! The format of his presentation was based on the well-regarded presentation from Peter Eastway at Infocus 2012 and by arrangement with Peter he was able to supply a template to everyone attending. Working his way through the presentation as well as filling out the Excel based NZIPP Base Rate Calculator in conjunction with the ‘real life’ discussion and input from the audience established a credible business base rate. I guess a surprise to some but it did prompt a lot of discussion. Here are some additional resources as discussed: NZIPP Base Rate calculator: http://nzipp.org.nz/nzippweb/Default.aspx?tabid=153 NZIPP Contracts & Forms: http://nzipp.org.nz/nzippweb/Default.aspx?tabid=153 Stock Photo Price Calculator: http://www.photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

June meeting - Print Critique During June we will be holding our annual print critique, in preparation for the Iris Awards in August. Now is the time to work on preparing your images for local peer review and critique before submitting them at a national level. The Iris Awards really are a highlight of the year, and nothing will push your photography to new levels like submitting images for judging.

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting‌ Canterbury/Westland Regional Meeting Venue: TBC, Christchurch Date/Time: 17 June, 2013 - 6:30pm

Canterbury/Westland Region This month we conducted our regional AGM and election of committee members. We have continuity with Ron Thow continuing in his role of regional chair and Kirsty Macdonald as secretary. Richard Linton stepped into the role of treasurer earlier in the year when Paul Daly resigned due to work commitments after an extremely lengthy time in the role. As a region, we must thank Paul for his commitment and generosity of time, advice and expertise over the years. Paul has given a large number of hours to the region during his time as treasurer. He has managed to survive four regional chairs and not only contributed as treasurer but also as an active committee member. He is the regional print judging guru & over the years ensured the smooth running of our judging with his management of the often temperamental the judging IT system (hopefully something we may be able to twist his arm to continue with). He was also often the first to assist with setting up the touring print exhibition for the region. So Paul, thank you for all you hard work and efforts over the past five plus years. Erin McLean and Kate Christie are the other existing committee members from 2012 and the election of Ann Worthy-Stephenson and Rebecca Watson completes the regional committee for 2013. Going forward this year it will be great to see some initiatives implemented for seminars and workshops as well as mini-workshops with a smaller number of attendees to embrace that almost one-on-one, intense approach, kind of like cross-fit for photography. The AGM overall was rather constructive this year with a great discussion around general business and some great actions points for Ron, the committee and the region to move forward with in the coming year. Upcoming Meeting… Otago/Southland Regional Meeting & Regional AGM Venue: The Thomas Green Public House, 30 Medway Street, Gore Date/Time: 12 June, 2013 - 5:30pm Fortnightly cafe meetings continue in Dunedin please email alan@ dovephotography.co.nz for details.

Regional Updates

Otago/Southland Region At the end of April we were lucky enough to have an informal get together with Ian Poole. He talked about the importance of personal work and gave insight into the print award process. For our May meeting we had guest speaker Trey Ratcliff. We had a high attendance including many new faces for Trey’s talk. Trey spoke about his process from seeing a photograph to the final edited version and included a live postprocessing demonstration. We live streamed his talk to many members who weren’t able to make it to Queenstown also. Thoughts are starting to turn towards choosing images for Iris and we have our Mock Print Judging evening at Alan Dove’s Studio. Last year, this proved to be a very important night and suggestions and ideas helped to improve images, which were then highly awarded! Our AGM is being held in Gore at The Thomas Green Public House, 30 Medway Street, at 5.30pm, 12th June. After completion of that, our own Jackie Ranken will speak about her 10 years experience in entering the Iris Awards and what it means to be a Grand Master. Mike Langford will also be there to talk about the process of becoming accredited. We only have a small membership in Southland but many have shown interest and we are hoping that this info night will show them all the benefits in NZIPP membership. This will be followed by a print critique. I will be broadcasting Jackie’s talk through Google Plus and will post a YouTube link to a live feed for anyone around the country that would like to tune in! I will post it on my g+ profile: https://plus.google.com/u/0/102133399309915884202/posts

The Missing Link

The Missing Link Written by Malcolm Somerville

Imagine that on your studio wall, behind your client meeting room desk, or where you used to project images. Imagine that there was now a Samsung LED display - in full 4K mode. Either the 85, 95 or 110 inch models. See the initial comments on CNET - http://tinyurl.com/b5o45jf Initially they are a bit pricey and the larger ones not available yet, but aside from that, how would you harness them best to present your work? What workflow, what content would best take maximum advantage of the screen? More importantly what vision will most excite your client or prospect and generate some form of business for you? And, will it excite them tomorrow or maybe next week? I have read a fair bit lately on the wider ramifications related to the very sad events around the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh ... as well as the other tragic factory fires, building collapses etc. that are driven by greed, corruption, destitution. The next layer are the ‘brands’ and chains that set the low production prices. They pose as concerned and innocent hands off facilitators. Have a look too at http://tinyurl.com/pgl32q3 James Surowiecki is the New Yorker Magazine Financial Page writer who last week (May 20 issue) wrote ‘After Rana Plaza’. Amongst the insight and horror are some gems of the market drivers, which have implications to us all. Eventually our behavior as consumers, our fickle tastes, our wavering brand loyalties, our seasonalities and our need for low price, ultimately drive the supply chain to cater to those needs and force some of those tragic results. So against that background of a constantly changing consumer, are photographers who offer what they did well for the last few years, somehow not connect or remain appropriate with the contemporary consumer? Should photographers refocus the seasons, roll over promotions faster, acquire new skills, explore new more discrete sectors, change direction faster? If the biggest of brands, the biggest of supply chains, with all their research and analysis are crouched and constantly waiting to make the next forward move as well as knowing what to cancel; why aren’t you? To go full circle, if you can show your stuff on the biggest most impressive screen, what are you going to show tomorrow, and what will you show next week and next month?

Industry News

JUNE 2013

Industry News The Changing Face of the New Zealand Professional Photography Industry: A Financial Perspective It is timely to add more value to your NZIPP membership. This year we will conduct a major survey because we all need to answer some pressing questions concerning our industry. Questions like... •

What are the current benchmarks on prices, revenue, profits and return on assets? How does this compare to similar industries and to five years ago before the recession (2007)?

Are we spending too much on new equipment too often?

What is the effect of the internet, social media and other marketing techniques?

Has the effects of social media been positive or negative financially to the professional photography industry.

What are the methods, perceptions, status, beliefs and intentions of industry participants?

What have been the effects of the digital age on photography business performance?

Do awards and NZIPP event participation effect revenues?

Thank you for your attention. I am Andrew Whyte and I am an active NZIPP Wedding Photographer. To complete a Waikato University Degree I need to complete an investigation study that can bring real value to an organisation at no cost. I need your help. We all have our own views to the questions above so let’s all contribute to the survey to be conducted in the next few months. A report will be published alongside the Pro-Report in November. The Questions have been formulated by selected senior NZIPP members. The survey will be done anonymously online and will take only half an hour of your time. Please start thinking about those questions above and finds some numbers from your 2007 and/or 2012 records that might relate to them. Your business would benefit from a report like this so please contribute to the sample. Watch for it in your inbox and on our social media pages later in June or early July.

Thank you.
