Presidents Report
So much has happened to keep the board very busy in the last month. Obviously we are working towards and looking forward to the Queenstown convention. Take the time to look at the program and see what a great lineup we have to help you and your business be great. I think it is the most practical and relevant presentation we have ever put together. Already we see how popular the demand for Robert Piccoli’s posing classes are. We the NZIPP exist only to help each and everyone of us to be as good as we wish to be. Many of you have become photographers because simply you love capturing images. However, when photographing people for example there is a right way to do it. The colleges and courses do well with technical knowledge, but as a longtime employer of young up-and-comers I know for a fact many of you have never been shown the right way to put people together. My dear mate Robert is doing us (me)a big favour by visiting us for the very last time. His unbelievably successful career is drawing to an end and our access to such experience is not to be missed. I kid you not, if you are a portrait, wedding photographer and need confidence in this area this is the last chance to see the very best. On that note, please give it serious thought to come to your event. You are smart joining an organization that is unique in this country. But please be smarter by actually making the effort to attend the Queenstown event. Finally, I would like to announce the arrival of Gina Connell our new Executive Director. Gina has much experience guiding organizations such as ours and the board is very excited to have her working with us. Remember, we the board are volunteers with businesses of our own. Having someone like Gina is going to keep us focused on all the things we can and will achieve for you in the future. Enjoy the winter light and remember to think about how to do things that give you joy.

LOOKING AT INCOME STREAMS Richard Prince?….No just kidding, but hey, he has certainly found one! What a great way to start a heated debate. To be honest, although the (ongoing) saga leaves me with that odd taste one gets in your mouth after a good puke, I can’t say that I am surprised. The internet is a jungle and the www a place where bigger or unscrupulous fish will gobble you up and leave you screaming for the (unwritten) laws of common decency. We can bleat as much we want but at the end of the day its the way you interact with the www that counts. It’s often said that news that reaches your ears is always the most unusual, naturally so - if it were mundane then it would not be ‘news’. However the “Princegate” image rip off’s are at the tip of the ghastly copyright violation food chain, but really just the tip of the www iceberg. Interaction on the www is a mix of exposure equals potential income, minus revenue lost through rip-offs. There are all sorts of ways that you can limit the ways that your images can be ripped off, but to gain total protection you will need the equivalent of a concrete cyber condom. Smaller file sizes, copyright digimarks etc may help. However advances in image recognition software are producing some remarkable results and it appears that a whole new revenue stream has been created through tracking breach of copyright. To put this to the test I did a few searches using the (free) Google image recognition facility on my own stock. As many of you know, I have a large seafood stock library licensed locally and internationally to seafood companies. Taking the URL of one image, I searched for copies and found over 30 copyright breaches, mostly Chinese, but a few American and European. The few that I think will pay will get invoices in the near future! I am told by a reputable stock house that this form of ‘find the culprit and invoice them’ has become a new revenue stream. Give it a go. Simply go into Google images click on the camera icon, paste the URL of the image that you would like to search into the pop up field, or upload an image from your hard drive. Sounds complicated? just go here then. http://carterlawaz.com/2013/03/using-google-image-search-to-detectcopyright-infringement/
Happy hunting

Honours Council Report
The countdown is now certainly on for this years annual Epson NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards. It is great to hear people starting to discuss their entries, and seeing the Iris Q&A Facebook page starting to get busy. We encourage all members to get involved in the Epson NZIPP Iris Awards, and give it a go. Your first entry is always the hardest. Largely because it is a hugely emotional journey pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, and seeking peer review. Yet we have all ‘been there, done that’, and many of us now find the award process quite addictive. Like Q advice, we do urge entrants to seek advice from suitably experienced people. A common fault in Q’s and Awards alike, is people taking advice from their cohorts, and or photographers not engaged with either system. To really seek success, single out someone further up the ladder within NZIPP and rack their brains. For a beer, wine, or coffee, many members will gladly impart their advice and experience with entrants new to the NZIPP award judging. With that said, many experienced photographers find it hard to comment on the Iris Q&A forum for fear of putting people off. Subsequently, while it remains a valuable forum, honest feedback can sometimes be lacking, and a truly educational critique avoided. The usual story here applies - go along to a local meeting, get involved, and use NZIPP as a means to build meaningful relationships with other professionals. Here honesty and respect can be nurtured, based on trust in the absence of fear. It will be from these relationships, that you will receive your best feedback. Anyway, here are a few general notes from Honours, that I hope are quite timely as we start ramping up for Queenstown. - These are print awards. Sadly every year we need to ring 1-3 people to ask where their prints are. The reply is often, having uploaded their online details, some entrants didn’t realise they had to make prints (despite the Call for Entry being pretty clear. I suspect if they don’t read that, they probably wont be reading this either! Oh well….). - Read the Call for Entry document carefully. This is your master guide, and we hope will answer all your questions. This is the AWARDS BIBLE, and some aspects do change every year. Don’t just roll with what you have done previously, as there are always tweaks to be aware of. - As implemented last year, our minimum print size is:
26 cm
This is the minimum size of the visible image as viewed by the judges, and is exclusive of any negative space or border you may choose to include. (There is an exception noted for Polaroid prints). Please note, if you print an image sized on paper to 26cm, and THEN matt the print, the visible area will be less than 26cm due to anchoring outside the matt window. It will therefore likely be subject to disqualification.

To allow for matting, you will need a few extra mm’s when attaching your print, so effectively you will need to print on paper stock no smaller than ~27cm. To be safe, you are best to print on an 8x12” sheet (or A4 if ink jet based media). 8x10” paper will be problematic. - Please also check your matt board size. This needs to be 40x50cm. This change was also implemented last year for the first time, & replaces the old imperial measurement of 16x20inches. - This year we have also implemented a new rule where if entrants are submitting 2 or more prints, entries are not to include the same subject. In clarifying this, the same subject is interpreted by Honours in the widest sense, and is not restricted to just people. It may also refer to a landscape, product, or even an overall situation. Instrumental in this change is the desire to see people broaden the scope of their entries, and not rely on a ‘lucky’ shoot, a ‘dream’ holiday, or simply just one stunning couple / family. Now that said, in discussing this rule, we appreciate that the likes of weddings do in fact have multiple facets, and Honours is open to receiving entries of the same wedding where images are significantly different despite being from the same event. To this end, if there was a photo of girls getting ready, then a bridal couple at a different location, with different lighting, etc, we would certainly accept that. But if identifiable couples appear, we would class that as being the same subject, and one image would be subject to disqualification (at Honour’s discretion). If in doubt ask. We would rather you seek clarification before the awards, than disqualification during. We would like to allay fears, rather than create tears! Some people will always push rules, or fail to heed the advice above, so please share this with your fellow colleagues, and support each other as we all grow professionally.
We look forward to a bumper Awards year in Queenstown with your support.

THANK YOU AND FAREWELL! It would seem that it’s too easy to take things for granted, and it’s not until someone leaves that you start to reflect not just on how long they’ve been there, but also the contribution they have made along the way. On May 29 (2015) we saw Megan Jones hang up her NZIPP Executive Director hat to move on to other ventures. Since joining us in November 2012, Megan has worked incredibly hard to support the Board and members with the growth and development of our organisation. I have to admit that at times this must have felt like herding cats. During her time with the NZIPP Megan has helped steer us in a much more efficient and effective direction. This, through her expertise, drive, commitment, enthusiasm and most of all the enormous belief she has in what we, as an organisation, stand for. So, on behalf of the NZIPP Board, and all our members, I’d like to sincerely thank Megan for all the hard work and energy she has put in over the past two and a half years. We wish you all the very best with your new endeavours. Kaye Davis Honours Council Chair

WW11 PORTRAIT PROJECT UPDATE Well a year has come and gone since we embarked on this project, and overall an incredible success. I am in awe of the effort that the membership put in and even more awed at the amount of work put in by the Christchurch team (in particular Stephen Goodenough, Richard Linton and Kate Christie). There have been a few late drops where WW11 veterans or their families have surfaced and asked that they be included in the project and we have achieved this where there is a willing photographer in the location to undertake the portrait. However due to the protracted system of cataloging single images, ordering the print and mailing them off ,adding a single portrait to the resources is becoming difficult to achieve. Sadly we must draw a line in the sand and make the end of June the last official date that a file will be added to the resource. So if you have any that you have not submitted get them to Stephen Goodenough by 30th June 2015 please. The aprox. 2000 portraits that have been made have now been gifted to the RNZRSA. A proposal has been lodged with Te Papa to look at a national exhibition of the work and the RNZRSA are working with Z Energy regarding funding to use the portraits as a starting point to build a new WW11 Veteran interactive data base where researched material, photos, historical information and even voice recordings can be added. Regional Updates UPCOMING MEETINGS… Auckland Festival of Photography 02 - 29th June Atrium on Elliott Shopping Centre Elliott St, Auckland Central
Auckland Region There have been some positive additions to the Auckland region this month, starting with the induction of a new look committee. We welcome on board 4 new committee members Penny Aspin, Dawn Dutton, Chris Traill and Tony Banks. Sean Dick is also taking over from Sarah Danelle as treasurer. We thank Sarah for all her efforts over the last couple of years and we wish her all the best for the future. May was also a busy month in Auckland starting off with David Oliver followed by our AGM with guest speakers Peter and Rosemary Morris and to top it off the Bride & Groom show. Firstly a big thanks goes out to David Oliver for presenting a wonderful workshop, the rain held out just long enough for us to venture outdoors to experiment with all that the Auckland sun could throw at us. A diverse range of photographers attended and without a doubt everybody that attended would have taken something away from the presentation. The AGM wasn’t our best attended event this year, however we did manage to vote in a new committee and discuss some ideas and issues. As a result we now have a strong committee team of volunteers to working hard for the Auckland / Northland region. To top off the night we heard from Rosemary and Peter Morris, for those of you that were there you where treated to some wonderful imagery and a great story to back it up. What a great example of turning a hobby into a successful business. For the second year now NZIPP sponsors Bride & Groom magazine have given us the opportunity to showcase the NZIPP at New Zealand’s largest bridal show. We were able to talk to hundreds of brides about the benefits of hiring a professional photographer. Every bride walked away with a list of NZIPP Qualified wedding photographers, so if you got call from a bride in recent weeks it may be because of the hard working team of volunteers that manned the stand. On that note I’d like to thank all of those that helped out in particular Chris Traill, Alex Kim, Tony Banks, Chris Rudsdale, Tracy Stamatakos, Suzanne and Mark McKeown who made the trip from the Waikato to help out. To finish up I’d like to invite everyone to visit our exhibition in this years Auckland Festival of Photography. This year is our biggest exhibition yet including the 2014 Iris exhibition, Auckland / Northland Gold awards and a special tribute to the RSA Veterans project. See you all there.

Canterbury/Westland Region NZIPP Castle Hill Weekend Retreat Recipe
Print Critique Night - Next Meeting June 15th
Quiz Night July 21st - (note this is a Tuesday night NOT Monday!)
1. Add together a bunch of photographers, a Canterbury high country location and some awesome photography gear to experiment with. 2. Mix with the most perfect weather you could imagine in May and super stylish outback accommodation. 3. Add a generous cup of enthusiasm, imagination and creativity. 4. Slather with laughter and fun. 5. Cook for one weekend on a high. Serve with a cozy fire, delicious food and mulled wine. Perfect!
This is the kick-butt awesome Canterbury/Westland NZIPP retreat weekend. It was the first time the region has organized a weekend trip away in recent times and it was a huge success for all who attended. The dorm room style accommodation with fantastic facilities, made a short trip into the wilderness very easy and comfortable. The highly equipped kitchen was the domain of ‘master chef’ extraordinaire Richard Linton. Richard’s culinary creativity, organization and ability to delegate duties when needed lead to a humming cooking environment that never failed to produce outstanding tastes. We were well fed to say the least (much better than at home for sure). With no strict schedule for the weekend in place, free flowing discussions around options and suggested activities were well facilitated by the very organized and pragmatic Clinton Lloyd. Down to the famous monolithic Castle Hill rocks for some night time/astro photography was the first adventure. This genre of art making was not everyone’s cup of tea but the nature of trying something new, different and venturing out of one’s comfort zone made this one of the most successful and enjoyed activities for the weekend. John Doogan was our expert and he embodied the patience and teaching of a saint amongst this cathedral of stone. Headlamps & torches and many layers of clothing were essential in this chilled, wild and gregarious landscape that embodied so much awe and grandeur. We knew we would definitely return in daylight to capture its many changing emotions. The rest of the evening was enjoyed with the help of Katherine Williams and Kate Christie’s delicious ‘made with love’ mulled wine and the flickering light of the fire. A huge thank-you to Anthony Turnham for sharing the love and making us all feel warm and fuzzy. There was a well needed sleep-in by some the next morning after a long session on the mulled wine. Richard was all over the cooked breakfast both mornings providing needed sustenance for the fun day ahead.

Greg from CR Kennedy had generously brought along some amaze-balls gear for us to play with and envy over. After breakfast the medium format Hasselblad and the Bowens lights were the first to be taken out into a delightful sun filtered clearing in the nearby beech forest for some playtime. Greg graciously became the axe wielding, bush-shirt wearing model for the shoot. We wanted that rugged, axe murderer look. Perfection! The Sigma Art lenses were given a run also and came highly recommended by many. Ole from Canon arrived with a range of canon lenses including the latest lens, which was on high demand amongst the Canon people. The widest full frame lens on the planet (11-24mm). It basically had to be pried out of Katherine William’s hands at the end of the weekend. Turns out she’s not very good at sharing. And a super cool 8-15mm fisheye zoom. The Cave Stream Reserve area was the next stop. We were constantly being given an opportunity to feel the crisp fresh Canterbury air and drink in the inspiring surroundings, which at times also challenged our physical fitness. Our creative skills were also being challenged as we practiced our ‘art of seeing’ in a totally new environment. A sunset return to the Castle Hill rocks was imminent.
Image © John Doogan
After dinner, Clinton Lloyd treated us to a demonstration of his ‘Pixel stick’ in the Beech forest location. Great excitement erupted from the bush as the first exposure was captured. Many a possum was scared back deeper into the landscape. Richard Linton and Kate Christie both needed to check themselves after witnessing the unexpected and amazing results being captured. Richard does love the toys!

Sunday unfolded and we were treated to another experimental portrait shoot using speed light systems, this time starring Ole from Canon as our model. This weekend was a retreat for the body, the mind and the soul. It provided a time to stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and reconnect with others, share stories and common experiences. It was a huge success, a real treat, and I’ll definitely be signing up for the next one. Click here for the best ever Mulled Wine. Special thanks to: Greg & Ole for their generosity, time and chiseled good looks. Clinton Lloyd for his amazing organization and facilitation. Richard Linton for his time spent getting supplies and cooking his butt off. Katherine Williams & Kate Christie for the delicious mulled wine. Otago Southland AGM AGM 5pm, 15th June The Thomas Green, 30 Medway St, Gore, Southland
Otago/Southland Region Winter is coming…… A little Game of Thrones reference for you GOT geeks out there (yes I am one of them! And if you haven’t seen it you are seriously missing out!!) We have had a bit of a cold snap this past week, snow!! I was all prepared to go out trekking with my mittens on and boots all sealed up with plastic bags to get some lovely wintery landscape photos. Turns out Dunedin wasn’t going to get that much snow after all! And I’m a total pansy when it comes to being cold, I would much rather stay inside by my warm fire and slam some Timtams in my Milo. So instead I asked Andy Woods nicely if he would head out and take some photos for me in Wanaka! Ha!, no not really, I came across Andy’s lovely snowy landscapes and asked him nicely if he would like to share them with us. Apparently it is forecast that we will have quite a bit of snow this winter so hopefully I will get another chance! Thanks for sharing your lovely images with us Andy! Here’s a little blurb from Andy about his wonderful winter images: “I was involved in taking a few folk up Lake Wanaka to Mou Waho Island by boat, so was rushing around a bit but knew there was great opportunities for some good images with the fresh snow. 8-10 cm had fallen. While I was picking up the passengers I had a brief time along the Wanaka lake front to capture a few shots. Would have liked to spend more time getting more shots but that wasn’t to be. A lot of people were out taking photos and the popular spot of the Wanaka Tree was busy with people. So I thought there must be another tree that would look good. I didn’t have to go far. The trip up the lake was beautiful but chilly” – Andy Woods.

Please bring along some images you may be considering for Iris and we will have a bit of a mock print judging. You are more than welcome to stick round for some dinner, I know I will be.

JUNE 2015
Regional Updates Wellington Region This month we were treated to a presentation from two of the Wellington regions most highly acclaimed members. First up was Catherine Cattanach - NZIPP Classic portrait photographer of the year 2014 and the winner of the highest scoring points in the history of the institute for her memorable and touching portrait of her mothers experience with cancer. Catherine took us on a tour of her photography journey, showing us some of her earliest work and her progression through to being a category winner at the Iris awards. She recommended strategically entering enough quality prints to make a category win possible and also to really maximise the criteria of the creative categories to ensure higher scores. Something I will definitely be thinking about this year. Next was Jason Naylor, NZIPP classic wedding photographer of the year 2014 as well as Wellington photographer of the year for both 2013 and 2014. He claimed to be riding the coat tails of Catherine, but his speech was extremely informative and gave us a great insight into how he selects his Iris entries as well as some of the thinking behind the brainstorming, creation and composition of some of his highest scoring images. He also spoke of the importance of great printing for the awards and suggested that for the right print this could add crucial points and attract positive comments from judges. No $50 printers and paper sample packs this year! This was a great reminder for me and I am looking forward to having my images once again expertly printed on some of the really great papers we have on offer. Overall a well received presentation and I for one picked up several great tips and got to know a little more about these guys. Also great to catch up with friends and members and to welcome a few new provisional members. Jane Nelson Wellington Member

Member Profile Sarah McGregor Were you born with a camera in your hand or at what point did you start? I remember Mum and Dad having a polaroid when I was 6 or 7 and always getting in trouble for wasting the film. I was intrigued, and so started my love of photography. At 18 I brought my first SLR, but I wasn’t patient enough to read the manual so for every film developed I got three or four photos in focus! Tell us a bit about yourself and your Minime Photography business? I’m a Mum to two handsome young boys who are 7 and 4, and a sweet sassy little girl who is 2. I’m married to a wonderful man and we live in Richmond, Nelson. When my first son was born in 2008, we took him to Pixi Foto. By the time son number 2 came along, they had closed and I had no idea where to get his photos taken. And so while I was trying to find a photographer and also supplement our income, Minime Photography was born. I saw the market here especially for Newborn Photography and ran with it. Our business and reputation has grown so much in the past four years and now also includes editing for other photographers throughout New Zealand. How would you describe your photographic style and how it has developed over the years? OMG my work has changed so much. In the beginning it was so, so bad. I thought everything had to be edited until it was unrecognisable I should have been featured in ‘ you are not a photographer’ but I think I’m lucky to have escaped that. I learned so much from my mistakes and I’m in a happy place right now. I had to ask some friends to help me describe my style. They said: Soft, dreamy, ethereal… there is something a little magical in my outdoor work, particularly my forest sessions.

What are the ingredients for success with photography? I really think you need to find your market, and not try to specialise in everything. And you need to have a good business plan if you want to do this for a living. What’s the one thing that you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you first started? Any advise for aspiring photographers? I wish I had put more time into learning photography skills before launching my business. I spend much more money now on developing my skills and style than I ever did in the first few years. I also wish I had listened to those who had valuable information on pricing. My advice to aspiring photographers would be to get yourself into a photography workshop and learn first hand from someone who is successful in their work. Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking/photographing/career path? My biggest influence was Karyn Flett. I saw her work on a facebook page and started following her, loved her style and launched my business, completely inspired by her, a working Mum who was obviously running a successful business. Her images always convey emotion and connection, and that’s so important to clients when deciding on purchasing images. I also love the work of Mike Hill and Jake Thomas (huge fan of New Zealand Photographers!)Bianca Duimel’s creative imagery is awe inspiring and I can learn a lot from her.

What is your favourite part of your job? And your least? I love being able to meet all these awesome people and give them something that I know they have saved their hard earned money for, and they are going to treasure. I love seeing their face when they pick up their images. I despise admin. I hate it with a passion and leave it all to the last minute before dealing with it.
“when I feel like things aren’t going to plan, I think of her and what she has achieved, and what I have been able to give her and it inspires me to give that to others..”
What is your gear line up? Looking to add any new pieces in 2015? I actually don’t have a lot of gear. I use a Canon 5d mkii, and my backup is a 500d! I use my 70-200 almost exclusively outdoors, and my 24-70, 50mm and 100mm macro for newborn and studio. I have a flash that I don’t really know how to use, and it gets pulled out at weddings only. I recently purchased a studio light, and I’m having fun and enjoying using that. I don’t really feel the need to add any new pieces at the moment, but if I was, I’d love a 5d mkiii and a 135mm f2, and maybe a lens baby because I’d love to try something different. Can you tell me about your most memorable photo shoot? I have less of a memorable shoot as I have a memorable client. This particular client, I have photographed five or so times. She has cerebral palsy, affecting her speech and movement. She said no one takes nice photos of her. I feel honoured that she comes back to me and that I could shoot for her ten year wedding anniversary and give her the images she wished she had at her wedding. Her can do attitude to life is inspiring, and when I feel like things aren’t going to plan, I think of her and what she has achieved, and what I have been able to give her and it inspires me to give that to others. Working with babies and children must be a challenge….What tricks do you have up your sleeve to get a great image? I can honestly say if I didn’t have my own children, this business wouldn’t work for me. I’m not the most patient person but that really is the key to newborn and child photography. My biggest mistake as a newborn photographer was rushing. Now I just take my time and it goes pretty smoothly. And as for the kiddos, you sometimes have to be abit of a dork and do silly things to get the shot. I also ‘employ’ the children as my assistant if they are not too keen on the photos, and I show them on the back of the camera our ‘test’ photos. Establishing a friendly relationship with children and gaining their trust makes a huge difference to their confidence in front of camera.

What is your favourite image from your portfolio? What makes it your favourite? My favourite would have to be an image of my little boy Kilharn. I had just bought a new lens and was giving it a test run. He was in the shower when I came in from my little macro garden testing and I could just see the potential for a great shot as the water ran over his face and he was staring at me with his big wide eyes. It’s probably my favourite for a few reasons; 1. Mummy goggles… 2. It’s so different from my usual work; it’s not light and airy it’s dark and moody, and 3. It allowed me to try something creative and see if it could work in my favour. What have you got coming up in 2015, that you are super excited about? Last year was my first real hit at Iris and I didn’t do too bad. Iris seems to bring me to breaking point and push me in ways I’ve never pushed myself in my work. A month or two before Iris I’m at my most creative and feel so inspired to go and shoot anything and everything. I’m hoping this year Iris will again bring me good fortune, and with another child due to start school soon, I’m looking forward to further growing my business which is a really exciting step for me. www.minime-photography.com

What’s In My Bag...?
JUNE 2015
What’s In My Bag...? Chris Parker - Waikato/Bay of Plenty In 1980 my bag had a Lubitel 2 twin lens reflex, Canon Ftb with 55mF1.2, 20mm F2.8, Soligor 300mm & SunPak flash, staple film was Ilford FP4 and Kodak Tri-X. My basic kit now is nearly identical to the last 5 WIMBers (except for the shoes) so I wont bore you with that. However my “Main Income” kit has eleven 650Ds & Timelapse controllers with a variety of lenses in water proof housings all currently employed shooting about 770 frames a day. Plus a Drone for those cut-away angles. Being a typical Kiwi Bloke with a shed and a roll of No8 wire all these units are custom made with Version 4 proving to be very reliable. Taking me from North Auckland to Christchurch this new line of work involves a lot of safety measures with Hi-Vis, safety boots, hard hats, ladders, climbing harness and “working at heights” NZ safety compliance. I am currently building 4 more systems to keep up with demand and replacing old leaky V1 units. These will have 3G modems to send images and receive new commands. Most projects are from 4 to 12 months or longer with few 24 hour jobs. Commercial photography is still OK, and we may need to employ staff if the Timelapse side stays over 12 cameras. Wedding, Portrait and Commercial shooters are all saying there is a lot of competition out there with prices being squeezed, combined with clients shooting their own work we are all feeling the pinch, so I feel that finding a “Niche” is very important to keep yourself in this exciting visual content industry. What is your USP or Niche?? Chris Parker M.Photog, Past President NZIPP Timelapse samples www.vimeo.com/photographics
