I have just returned from a board meeting and a Policy and Planning meeting in Wellington and I’m very pleased to report that both were very productive, positive and progressive. The reaction from the regions to recent board’s initiatives is totally supportive, which gives us as a Board the strength to move forward. So thank you to the Policy and Planning Committee for their faith in us. Among the initiatives that I speak of, is the implementation of the CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and ‘Accreditation Programme’, the up take of which is finally stating to take hold, which (I’m pleased to say), will very soon represent the majority of our members. We have also just been able to sign off on the proposed Mentoring Programme that you have all been patiently waiting for, the details for which will be included in next months PRO REPORT. As well we were able to release the ‘Regional Handbook’, which provides quick answers to the many questions both regional chairs as well as members have had in the past. A big thanks needs to go to Lisa Gane and her team for this. It’s a great step forward for the institute in how it runs at its grass roots. In the same breath, the Board is sad to announce the resignation of Lisa Gane, due to an impending arrival. Thank you Lisa for all your hard work during your short time on the Board! In her place, taking over the chair of Portrait Director, I would like to welcome Karyn Flett, who has kindly stepped up in a caretaker role until being officially voted in at this years AGM. I know Karyn will bring to the position a wealth of knowledge and experience that can only be good for the institute as we move forward. I would finally like to take this opportunity to tell you about a couple from our fantastic line up of speakers for the Infocus Conference. Being our Jubilee Year, it was essential that we were able to give you the best available, as well as give it a little bit of a ‘Kiwi’ flavour. From New York, we have the great Portrait/ Illustrative photographer, Gregory Heisler, who will both inspire and educate you. From the South of France, we have our own world famous photographer Rachael Hale McKenna, who will share with us what it takes to become published around the world while at the same time following her dreams and photographing the things she loves. Next month I will share more details on our Jubilee year. I’m excited about this years conference, the Boards excited and the Policy and Planning Committee are excited and so should you be. You just have to be there this year! Cheers,

Commercial Directors Report
MARCH 2013
I’ve been doing the job of Commercial Director for nearly six months and I’m feeling as though I haven’t done a lot for you commercial peeps. Sorry - it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride just getting to grips with this role, and some of the wider issues that the NZIPP board is dealing with at the mo. Not the least the 75th Jubilee, which I must say is shaping up to be a “must get to”. I noticed a thread on the NZIPP Facebook page, I guess it must have been last Thursday. I could not respond at the time but several others did. Nineteen of you did in all, mostly good advice. It was in response to a question about pricing commercial photography. Really, I don’t know what all the fuss is about after all its only rocket science (!). Yep, the truth is that if you get this stuff right every time you have missed your vocation. Brain surgery, landing a space ship on Mars or analysing data from a nuclear reactor are alternative occupations for you. Rocket science or not, at the end of the day business is business. What separates the person that stays in business is simple: good business. If you do not make sufficient money to stay in business after you have paid your expenses, made enough to enjoy your chosen lifestyle and remembered to pay your taxes then you are not in business for long! Its all about a sensible approach to the bottom line. Photography is just like any other business. You need to be competitive to sell your service or product, but make enough to make a decent return on your time and investment. Know what it costs to run your business on an annual basis. And if you are mortgage free factor in market value rent (use the Base Rate Calculator on the NZIPP website under Resources or check out the NPPA online calculator). This is only a starting point. Have a think about all the add on’s and variables that are common to all photographers, such as travel and/or assistants. Not to mention the all important ‘usage’ when estimating a price for a job. Usage gives you the flexibility to be able to negotiate further with your client. Some other important points: •
Always license your work and retain copyright
•
Always state the number of image files will be supplied to your client
•
Always get model and property releases
•
Give options in your quote i.e.: a range of prices for usage terms, or number of final files may mean your client feels comfortable with a particular direction
When pricing a job try the above, then try one of the online pricing guides like this one form the American Advertising Photographers of course you may want to use an exchange rate calculator to get back to NZ dollars like www.xe.com. If you arrive at the same price by using your own pricing strategy and an online guide, then you are most likely pretty well on track. Everyone struggles with pricing particularly in this economic climate, but sensible pricing is key to maintaining realistic expectations with our clients as well as giving us, the photographer, an acceptable bottom line. If you have a commercial pricing question please email me. I’m happy to help and your questions are invaluable in assessing how we best offer advice. Shoot well and prosper

THE JOY REALLY IS IN GIVING…… Deciding what to write for my first Pro Report became pretty obvious to me as I was driving home tonight. I had spent the day at Starship photographing a pretty sick wee girl. I was being showered with hugs from parents, grandparents and friends for taking the time to capture what is likely to be their last family photographs. It feels like such a small thing to do for people dealing with so much but we know in this industry how important it is. So I drove home with boxes of chocolates and wine for my time (my protests of NO PAYMENT ALLOWED fell on deaf ears again) and I was filled with the certainty yet again of how it really is better to give than receive. This made me think about the same philosophy in the photography industry within our peers. I guess this is how I find myself here, writing this for this months Pro Report. I joined NZIPP without hesitation, never questioning what it could do for me, but looking forward to what I could give back. Over the first few years, when I looked at what I could do to give back and reached out to some new photographers, It become apparent that a lot of people new to the industry are floundering for lack of information and support as they navigate their way around the journey, and I thought, you know, it never hurts to throw them a life ring when we can, pull them aboard, dry them off and point them in the right direction. It’s a win win situation as I see it, they set off on the right path and we know we’ve given a bit of whats needed for them and the industry. What’s needed isn’t always information or huge amounts of time, sometimes its an invite to come along to a meeting or an invitation to join a group for coffee. Maybe it’s a get together with some newbie’s to answer a few questions they may have. Or maybe its just a warm hello to a new face at conference. Lets face it, we’ve all been the new kid on the block at some time and a friendly face or helping hand can certainly make a difference. For me, it was a friendly email asking me to come along to a meeting, had I not received that I’m pretty sure it would have taken me a loooonnnng time to get the courage up to rock on up to a meeting by myself. Sharing a bit of who we are and how we travelled our journey (or continue to travel it), doesn’t jeopardise where we are at or where we are heading, but it sure does feel good knowing it smoothed a few bumps in someone else’s road.

Honours Council Report
MARCH 2013
Ask & You Shall Receive Well, not quite! But we have certainly listened.... Having just had a full day meeting in Wellington, Honours have continued to work hard to make the Epson/NZIPP Iris Awards the best medium for creative photographic expression in New Zealand. We have debated long and hard, and we hope the changes forecast for 2013 will encourage even more people to enter. 2012 saw record participation, and we are serious about building on this. The key changes to be implemented for 2013 are as follows: 1. Wedding Creative Category Introduced for the first time last year, the criteria for this category will enable content not just from the wedding day, but also content from pre and post wedding events to be entered. While work must still be commissioned (rather than self promotion), the type of work that may be entered includes such events as engagement sessions, ethnic weddings over multiple days, “Trash the Dress”, and if you really want to, yes, the Hen’s night! The standard and expectation of excellence hasn’t changed. Rather, we hope to embrace the broader range of activities that wedding shooters now cover. The aim here is for the Wedding Creative category to be as CREATIVE as it can, not just in treatment, but also in content! 2. Wedding Album As with the Wedding Creative category, the Wedding Album now also embraces this shift, to incorporate more of what goes on around a wedding. While entries will still need to demonstrate excellence, they are no longer restricted to wedding day coverage alone. Before you get too concerned that we will see ‘fruit salad’ albums, there will be an expectation of strong visual continuity and justification of choices within any album where multiple activities are presented. It’s not that you have to include these elements, as much as you are no longer restricted and can include them where they contribute to the overall album story. 3. Fusion The single biggest feedback we have received, is the request for sound in the Fusion category. So that is what we have done! Who-hoo - I can hear you all exclaim across the land! In 2013, the criteria allows for the inclusion of ambient audio capture, the addition of sound effects, as well as music. Though be aware, that just because it is allowed, doesn’t mean you should! It is pertinent to stress at this time also, that despite an expansion of what is deemed acceptable audio component, narration or voice over remain excluded. Again, award-winning work will be judged on its merits, with excellence of craftsmanship and clear communication within your selected genre remaining paramount. Honours has discussed Fusion a lot over the last year and a half, and feel it is important to share our vision with you; that currently this category is NOT a documentary, advertisement or short film. It is Fusion – the mix of still imagery and moving footage, with audio. There is a risk in people’s understanding, that because it does include dSLR motion footage, that it becomes a free for all for any dSLR project. That is NOT the case. In time we fully expect to embrace film making to a greater degree. Yet the aim of this category at present is to appeal to the wider photographic

Executive Updates
community, as most members try to embrace some degree of dSLR production. As such, while the evolution into short film is inevitable, this still remains on the horizon for now. 4. With the introduction of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and Accreditation options last year, it became more important than ever to align the Q system with that of the Iris awards. To this extent, the Iris Awards scoring range of 60-69 will be recognised as the equivalent of ‘Q’ standard. The only change with this will be that this scoring band will now be known as “Professional Standard” (formerly High Professional Standard). Scores of 50- 59 will subsequently fall into the definition of “Below Professional Standard”. These changes will take effect from this years Iris Awards judging and in no way detracts from the scores awarded within these ranges in previous judging’s. Perhaps this is a good time to mention, that while Honours is an NZIPP committee, we have developed our own mission statement: Inspire and encourage membership participation in awards, to foster development among professional photographers in order to better the standard of photography in New Zealand, and celebrate their success. While the labour, implementation and administration of the awards is initiated under the NZIPP banner, we see our role as a holistic one, encouraging ALL NEW ZEALAND photographers to continually strive towards raising standards, not just amongst our members. We want to take photography forward, so please feel free to encourage non-members to get involved. Finally, the Iris Awards 2013 Call for Entries document is planned to be available from March 5, so mark these dates in your calendars now: •
Early bird entry registration close off is 4.00pm, Wednesday 17 July 2013
•
Final entry registration close off is 4.00pm, Wednesday 24 July 2013
•
Print entry deadline is 4.00pm, Monday 29 July 2013
•
Judging this year coincides with the 75th Jubilee, and will take place at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland from Thursday 01 to Saturday 03 August
PLEASE NOTE (for all you creatures of habit pulling potential award files from hard drives at the last minute!) – THE 2013 AWARDS ARE EARLIER THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS!! The NZIPP Board is pulling out all stops for the 75th Jubilee, with a fantastic line up of world-renowned speakers. This WILL be an event not to be missed. We look forward to seeing you in Auckland. If you have any questions, can I suggest you funnel these through your Regional Chair. The Call for Entries will be your definitive guide, so look out for this in the next week or so. In the mean time, keep up with the planning for your entries. There’s no time like the present. Kind Regards

Member Update Recently I visited a new photographic studio that is simply to die for! Located on Hamilton’s CBD above well-known Browsers Bookshop, the studio is easy to find and convenient. Its sizeable upstairs space comprises seven different areas. One large daylight studio is ideal for glamour and family photos; its light and airy interior also offers a changing and makeup area for clients. Another studio is designed for special portrait lighting and different backdrops. The staff kitchen also provides everything needed for the preparation and set-up of food photography. A generous workroom and reception area complete the facility. The proud occupant is none other than NZIPP member and Wedding Director, Nicola Inglis of Nicola Inglis Photography, who searched for several months to find a space suitable for her growing business. Nicola is determined to provide a service second to none for her clients in Waikato’s Heartland and beyond. Her studio is yet another step along the way to her dreams. Best wishes for your new venture, Nicola. Bill Lindberg

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Auckland/Northland Regional Meeting Venue: TBC, Auckland Date: 20th March, 2013
Auckland/Northland Region For our February meeting we ventured over to Waiheke Island to learn from the NZIPP locals. We started at Emma Hughes studio near Oneroa followed by a practical wedding photography session at the beach. With a lovely couple as our ‘bride and groom’, Emma ran through her typical wedding shoot process. She showed us efficient ways of shooting in a particular area to get the most variety of shots. Emma shared tips on how to make the photo shoot flow and how she constantly communicates with her couple which puts them at ease which results in better photos, less stress and a happier bride and groom. She covered lighting, posing, composition, lenses and her techniques for getting genuine smiles and interactions between the subjects. Everyone was shooting away and took some practical skills and great photos from the session. We then went to Cable Bay where Blair Quax was ready with his presentation. Blair talked about how his photography journey begun and how he became the Wedding Photographer of the Year 2010 and is now a Master of Photography. Blair owns and operates Shine Studios with wife Laurretta Quax – also an NZIPP member and Master of Photography. They both hold bachelor degrees in Media Arts and have won over 100 awards both nationally and internationally. Quite the wedding photography power couple! Also at Cable Bay was the exhibition opening of “Island 5” which displayed award winning Iris prints by Phillipa Karn, Emma Hughes, Blair and Lauretta Quax and Alice Doig. To top it all off, some of the attendees extended their stay a few hours and went on a guided walk with Phillipa Karn to view the outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Auckland/Northland Region Member Profile - Phillipa Karn How did you get into photography? Went to Elam and wanted to major in painting. First year involved all disciplines, photography being one. Had Don Binney as a painting tutor who told me to “Stop scratching around with your paint brush like an old hen!!!” Deeply offended by his comment I decided at that point I would pick up a camera and choose photography as my major which I did and have never looked back or regretted it. Most interesting place you have ever photographed in? I met a slightly goth Australian couple the day before photographing their wedding who asked if there were any nearby graveyards we could do some off site location work at! I remembered the Pioneer Cemetery which wasn’t that far away from their venue so I took them there for a look. It is an amazing place, think of sun filtering through a well established tree canopy and old graves with angel tombstones and wrought iron fences surrounding them. As we walked around the bride asked quietly if there were any spirits there who would like to attend a wedding the next day! So we went there on their wedding day and did some great photos...but they were definitely not in your average setting! Tell us about your business: After I gained my degree I travelled for a couple of years around Australia always intending to go further but never did. Returned to NZ bought a villa in Mt Eden and banged into Greg Whitecliffe (a fellow Elam student) who was busy setting up the Whitecliffe Art School in Parnell. He asked if I could teach photography and I ended up doing that for the next 5 years approx, heading the department and teaching up to 100 students a week. It was of course film photography in those days so many hours spent in darkrooms. We had many great student exhibitions and I had my own exhibition at the Parnell Gallery as well. Also freelanced over these years and had a studio and darkroom in my Mt Eden villa. Did a few weddings but mainly mug shots for models and actors for their portfolios. Big Gap...marriage kids etc. For the last 6 years I have reestablished myself as a serious photographer specialising in weddings on Waiheke Island, but loving the artistic side of landscape and portrait work as well gained through post production work I work from home and the heart of Oneroa, have a small office/ gallery which I can meet clients and discuss their plans and show them examples of my work. On the large weddings I use a second and/or third shooter All post production work by myself. I shoot in RAW and process in Lightroom and then use Photoshop and One Software programmes to bring out the best in my images and add creative effects to stand out images

Regional Updates Auckland/Northland Region Member Profile - Phillipa Karn Continued... I use Nikon D300s ...have not gone to full frame camera at this stage but I guess it is the next step A particularly satisfying job: I always find great feedback from happy wedding couples when they see their presentation is satisfying. It makes all of your efforts worthwhile Something that makes you grumpy? Bridezillas Some other photographers whose work you admire: Have just had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Marti Friedlander socially which has been a highlight of my life really. I admire her conviction to photography as a tool of recording society, at a time when it was quite a radical thing to do (1960’s and beyond). At 85 she still has an energy and passion for photography and I loved when she put me on the other side of the camera took a few pics of myself and my partner. Other contemporaries who I admire are Jerry Ghionis and Sue Bryce, also Bambi Cantrell. I belong to Jerry’s Ice Society and I find it invaluable for getting tips on shooting weddings. Sue Bryce and Bambi, I love watching on Creative Live and seeing how they make use of natural light in portraiture. Recent accomplishments: Well I would have to mention the gold award in the creative wedding category for last years Epson/NZIPP Iris Awards. The story behind it as well made me wish I was there to see it judged.

Also this month, the 2013 NZIPP Policy and Planning meeting was held in Wellington. The P&P meeting is held annually and attended by Regional Chairs and the NZIPP Board. In it a ‘road map’ of the coming years goals is created for the organisation, both at national and regional level and the challenges that need to be overcome are discussed. This year’s meeting saw much discussion of the mentoring programme and other educational opportunities as well as announcements of this year’s conference speakers. It is also a rare opportunity for the Regional Chairs to meet, compare notes and discuss ways to work together. As an organisation NZIPP is dynamic – by which I mean that it is the product of its collective membership and is always developing in response to its members. Such development may seem to slow for some, too fast and perhaps even unnecessary for others. But change is both inevitable and necessary – any organisation that fails to evolve stagnates. It is a measure of the success of NZIPP that the organisation finds itself in its 75th Jubilee year – no mean feat for any organisation that is comprised of members who are all fundamentally individualists, run by volunteers (and volunteers with limited free time at that) and funded on the proverbial ‘oily rag’. Got skills? Many people in the industry essentially ‘fall into’ a photographic business. The gradual development from interest/hobby or study subject to an incomegenerating business is often not particularly planned or even considered, it just happens. Photography is an attractive, relatively easy and cheap field to start in, compared to many other fields. Let’s face it there are relatively few businesses that you can start a business in, with under a thousand dollars and just a Facebook or web page. Additionally the hours appear attractive from the outside and subjects willing to pay less ‘as you learn’ are plentiful. We all know that increases in camera features, drops in hardware prices and the availability of recipes/plug-ins and actions for post-production, along with inexpensive but powerful software, have all helped to contribute to an explosion in the number of photographers drawing some sort of income from the industry. In short there have never been so many photographers in the greater industry. In the ‘old days’ a new photographer often joined a studio and learned the required skills from the principal there. Today these opportunities are rare. More and more today we see ‘experts’ promoting online courses, DVD programmes and seminars that will ensure business success for the purchaser with little or no apparent effort beyond buying the course. This has become an entire industry of its own, often promising much but often delivering little. PRO REPORT Member Magazine of the NZIPP

Regional Updates Canterbury/Westland Region - Continued... However the reality is that few photographic businesses will be successful enough to allow the owner to draw a full time income from them. More of them will allow for a part-time income but overall the attrition rate for new photographic businesses is extremely high and most will close up after 2-3 years. Many of those that join NZIPP are the photographers who recognise (among other things) the need to be part of an organisation that provides benefits for photographers that being alone in the industry can’t provide. They are people who want to develop not only their photographic, but their business skills. After all a photographic business is about 80% ‘business’ and 20% actual ‘photography’. This month’s CW regional speaker from Business Mentors made us aware that BMNZ is potentially a very useful resource for anyone either starting up or developing their business. But it is important to remember that just engaging with a mentor is, in itself, not a guarantee of business success, nor is attending meetings or courses which focus on developing business skills or getting a diploma or degree in business or commerce related field. However doing some or all of these things demonstrate awareness that such skills, coupled with the right effort and mind-set, definitely contribute to success. It is amazing how often someone who has done the hard yards seems to be lucky, or to have more opportunities. As Louis Pasteur once wrote “chance favours the prepared mind”.

Otago/Southland Region The Epson / NZIPP 2012 Iris Awards Touring Print Exhibition arrived in Queenstown Airport on 18 February. Without the box, with the stands. Oops. Queenstown was the first off the rank to book this years touring print and it was the first time that our region had the privilege of mounting the new images onto the stands. The prints and the stands were sent separately but the courier failed to deliver the stands in time for the advertised opening. So we did the Kiwi ‘number eight wire ‘trick. We thought outside the square and lay the prints out on the baggage carousel. With due ceremony the NZIPP President Mike Langford opened the exhibition. It was great to see the enthusiasm of those who were present at seeing the exhibition for the first time. Looking to see if any of ‘their’ images made the cut, some looking for inspiration and others looking to simply enjoy the creativity that abounds in so many great shots being in the one place. These exhibitions become part of our visual history, they set the milestones for where the industry is at and set the photographic goal posts for the members of the NZIPP. Thanks go to Jason Law for helping with the final mounting of the prints when they arrived in Queenstown and getting the formal exhibition up. The Touring Print dates in the South Island... Otago/Southland Regional Meeting Venue: TBC Date: 18th April, 2013 Guest Speaker - Marketing expert Eric Billoud - www.breakthroughbusiness. co.nz Is email marketing still worth the effort? Email Marketing is a numbers game, and yes it still works. Like many other marketing avenues it’s getting more difficult though as the readership levels are dropping. This is where you MUST work on your point of difference for each of the emails you send out. The main question in your audience’s mind is “is it worth me interrupting what I am doing for 3 minutes and read this?”. The answer is “get your email subject line right” as it represents 97% of your success.

“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” LAO TZU Outcomes .... Almost every guru who is asking you to stop or follow or buy is suggesting that you need a plan. Plan to succeed or plan to fail? Sometimes the plan you make is just doing more of what you already do with results that are already not what you want. There is a massive industry of easy steps .. McKinsey 3 steps, Kotter 8 steps, Fast Company 4 steps, every number of steps is covered. Change of direction in business or life is like learning to dance ... lots of rules but without the fun. Every day I seem to get an email from Marathon Press. They are a US company who are a “Professional Photographer’s Marketing Company” and are prolific in the information and inspiration they distribute. Within the US they run a number of seminars, support conference presenters etc as they grow their presence. Many NZIPP members probably already subscribe to the regular posting, but it is worth looking at their blog for a range of helpful hints. By now many photographers see the end of the wedding season approaching, and like dairy farmers are heading into the ‘drying off’ phase as the milk stops flowing. Now is the time to switch into the off-season activities, find the new income streams. Perhaps the Marathon blogs will trigger a few ideas. “ Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” BARACK OBAMA To Finish here is a clever and funny demonstration of the compositors art in a music video... http://tinyurl.com/aakoeuf.
