Presidents Report
Despite hoping that 2011 would be better than 2010 after the economic downturn, it seems the world is in turmoil suffering the wrath of nature. The Queensland floods, the Christchurch earthquakes, and now as I write this Japan has been hit by a massive 8.9 earthquake and tsunami’s. Once again we watch the horrifying devastation unravelling live on TV. The only good thing that seems to come out of these devastating tragedies is the restoration of a sense of community, as people band together from far and wide, in fact globally, to help each other out. In our own small community of professional photographers we have over 60 photographers in the Christchurch area directly affected by the quake. We are thankful that none of them were injured or killed. But some have faced the heartbreaking loss of their studio’s – buildings red stickered and owners never allowed to return. Others have studios still in the Red no-go zone of the central city, and may have to wait months for access. And some have severely damaged homes. Everyone though will now face the massive struggle to find business and keep their doors open. There is no question it will be tough financially for many for a long time to come. The NZIPP Board felt the most direct way we could help our Christchurch colleagues was to find a way to make their membership free this year. Ideally we would’ve liked to just write off their subs, but we don’t have the cash reserves to do that. Instead we’ve decided on an immediate 25% discount with no accounts being sent out to Christchurch members until July 2011. During the three months until July, we hope to collect enough in donations from the rest of the NZIPP membership to cover the remaining subs shortfall to pay their subs in full. When the rest of you are sent your subs invoices shortly you will see a donation option on the invoice. We need about $50 from every other member – please give generously. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty region has already started the ball rolling with a very generous donation of $1000 from it’s regional funds. They challenge the other regions to do the same.

You’ll also have seen that Richard Linton very generously set-up his studio as a “Drop-In” centre for other photographers to use immediately after the quake. Over 50 photographers called in to catch up with each other, and use the workstations and studio. He is also looking after kits of equipment for CHCH members to borrow from Canon and Nikon, and Adobe donated software to use on the additional workstations Richard set up in his studio. Canon has also offered to assist with a very generous finance deal for photographers who have to replace equipment lost or damaged in the quake. Our thoughts are certainly with all the victims of the quakes here and in Japan, and as I’ve said before we hope you will treat the CHCH NZIPP members as “family” and assist them in any way you can in the difficult months to come. MARCH 2011
As you’ll know by now Christchurch suffered a major earthquake two weeks ago. Although it was smaller in terms of magnitude and total energy released compared with the previous September 2010 shake, it’s proximity to the city, shallow depth, high peak ground acceleration levels and the timing on a weekday lunchtime have made it one of New Zealand’s worst ever disasters. A number of photographers had very close calls with structural failures in their studios. Many were in their buildings at the time. Luckily as far as I know no-one was injured, but many have damaged premises or are not allowed to access undamaged premises due to locations being inside the cordons. Everyone seems to know someone who lost a life. For me to date four people I knew are deceased including a good friends partner and another friends cousin. MagnumMac (YooBee) customers may not know the founder, Murray Wood and former Marketing Manager, Stephen Wright were lost in the CTV building collapse. For the first few days afterwards the city (and likely the nation) was in shock. On the ground many people had no idea of the extent of the devastation, as few had power and couldn’t watch TV or get online. People were acting like stunned mullets. It was impossible to think rationally or multi-task. One initiative taken by NZIPP in consultation with the AIPA and the industry, was to establish a Drop-In Centre for photographers in the week after the quake at my studio, which sustained virtually no physical damage. It was a place to catch up with one another, get online, do some post-production, get gear, and even shoot in a studio. A huge thank you must be given to the industry for helping out. Canon (CPS) supplied loan EOS cameras and lenses, TA Macalister/Nikon (NPS) supplied a huge range of top end kit, Epson sent a printer with heaps of consumables, Adobe provided Lightroom and Photoshop for use on a couple of workstations, and Lacklands/SanDisk supplied memory cards. Please show your appreciation by thanking these companies and giving them your business when you get a chance. During the week we had a total of 50 visitors to the Drop-In centre. For those who did visit I think it was very helpful to see and talk to colleagues. A big thank you to John Doogan, Paul Daly, Danielle Colvin, Daniel Swords, Ken Morrison, Tony Stewart, Kirsty Macdonald, and Meredith Dyer for volunteering to be on-site and meet and great people during the week. Now that the immediate event and need has passed the Drop-In Centre has closed, but the resources are still available on an “by appointment” basis. This includes all the Canon & Nikon loan equipment. Since the quake I had made my own gear and studio available at no charge. From now on and for the forseeable future I am still offering my own gear and facilities available at 50% of our regular hire rates to affected photographers. Contact me directly on 021 889 100 if you need any assistance. As the dust settles, the adrenaline wears off and the aftershock induced sleep deprivation ends, the reality of life post-quake will really start to sink in. Christchurch will never be the same again. When the CBD is opened to the wider public they will be shocked at the level of destruction. Out in the suburbs the physical damage is obvious on the roads with lumps, bumps and cracks everywhere. The damage to homes is less visible to the naked eye but when you get close you see the shattered dreams.

The government has already started an aid package that provides immediate financial support to businesses experiencing hardship. I thoroughly recommend you apply for these payments. I’m sure in the coming weeks and months further support will be given, possibly in the form of cash or deferment of tax obligations. For those of you both in Christchurch and elsewhere I encourage you to consider using Christchurch owned businesses were possible, and inject much needed funds in to the local economy. As I write this article the Reserve Bank has dropped the OCR by 0.5% as a direct result of the quake. All of New Zealand gains from this drop, I challenge you to find a way to spend the money you will save on your mortgage interest with a Christchurch business. What’s clear is that the wider Christchurch city area has already undergone a mass exodus of many people. For photographers this means a smaller market of customers. It’s not all doom and gloom however. For every door that closes, another opens and there will always be opportunities that present themselves. With the demand for infrastructure repair, and replacement service providers will want to document their contribution. Later we should see more work from the construction and design clients. Remember that when the going gets tough the tough get going. We’ve survived the GFC, a 7.1 quake. We will survive this.

Wedding Directors Report
MARCH 2011
I wrote this article before the Christchurch earthquake, but something like this only drives home harder the importance of making an effort when it comes to family photos - NIcola. Let’s talk about family group photos at weddings...they’re kind of a pain, right? They take up this big chunk of time & slow us down getting to the ‘good stuff’. If you’re like me you find yourself talking about ‘getting them done as quickly as possible’ & ‘blasting through them’. If you’re not careful you start making sacrifices for the sake of speed...”not quite everyone is looking? Well I did tell them, we don’t have all day”. Recently I shot a wedding where I was fortunate enough to know ahead of time that one of the family members was pretty well into her fight with cancer, a fight she wasn’t expected to win. I decided that was as good a reason as any to make a little bit more of an effort with the group photos. I think I was lucky this time to know ahead of time how important these pictures were going to become, but seriously? How many of us have had the experience of finding out afterwards that we took the last decent picture of someone? It actually happens pretty often. There really is no excuse for not taking the time to make these pictures the best they can be...every time. And if you need an extra reason, consider how many of the guests are in your target market...possibly getting married themselves & certainly in a position to recommend you to others who are. The group photos are really the only contact they have with you during the day, they will judge your performance based on that experience, & the resulting images of course. OK, enough talking already :-) This is what I did. First I had a cruise around the intertubes for inspiration & came up with a couple of ideas I wanted to try. I chose a location where I could easily move some furniture (check with the venue first...learned that the hard way!). I chose two chairs of different heights & I was super lucky because I managed to find two chairs with arms. From that point on these group photos took no more time than the standard ‘chorus line’ ones & I much prefer the result. The other advantage was that the older rellies who wanted to sit could do so without looking out of place. So here’s a challenge for your next wedding...take a squizz at your family groups and step them up a level. You’ll be making family history :-)

Using the term ‘NZIPP Qualified’
Just a quick reminder that the use of this term is for those photographers who have passed the NZIPP Q (Qualification) process as outlined on the NZIPP website. In multi-shooter studios it is important to make it clear that the qualification is earned and held by individual photographers, not the studio as a whole.

Regional Update
MARCH 2011
Regional Update Canterbury/Westland Region February’s Canterbury / Westland meeting was presented by Mark Cornellison, a digital retoucher based in Christchurch. Mark moved here from an agency in Seattle in 2006 and worked for TimeZoneOne retouching images for large US clients including the US Army and Crocs. He’s recently set up his own retouching business working for clients throughout the country, retouching everything from fashion / hair to products to cars. Image © Linda O’Reilly
Mark showed us a selection of his work comparing the original image shot by the photographer with his retouched end product. Most of his work is done in Photoshop (+ some Illustrator) and he stepped us through some of his files showing the fine adjustments spread over 30-40 layers. As well as cleanup, adjustments, and colour grading, he also does some compositing. And he’s also moving in to CGI, where the entire “image” is generated by the computer. Mark stressed the value he brought to images both in giving them an edge, but also doing it in a cost effective manner (rather than the photographer spending many times longer trying to achieve the same result). He also mentioned that many photographers use retouchers for their portfolio images, to lift them above the norm. Mark’s website is http://cornellison.net/ . One of his sources of inspiration is Amy Dresser http://www.amydresser.com/. Another site worth checking is http://retouchpro.com/ David Watkins
