MAY 2011
In the last couple of months we’ve been reminded of the importance of powerful visual imagery in communicating the traumatic earthquake in Christchurch & the Tsunami’s in Japan to the world. Sadly they are images that affect us deeply & will remain etched on the brains of many for a long time to come. We’ve also heard the stories of those affected saying photographs of family & friends are among some of the most valuable possessions they’ve lost. I think these things need to remind professional photographers of the valuable role their images have in society & history - particularly when we have a population who increasingly take great photography for granted because it is perceived as an easy thing to attain. As a commercial photographer I’m constantly frustrated by the lack of resources that some clients are prepared to commit to great imagery when they will commit many thousands of dollars to the advertising media those images will appear in. We often hear “But it’s just a photo – how can it be worth that much?” They fail to see any value in the very images they expect to grab their customers’ attention to increase their sales or the perception of their brand. Magazine publishers also rely on great photography for the success of their publications & yet there are some who are paying less than $500 for a multipage feature in their publication that could take a day to shoot & then another day for post production. Most have not increased the rates they pay for photography for 15 years. In the consumer market there are people who will quibble at spending even a couple of hundred dollars on a quality family portrait or for coverage of their wedding but they consider those images their most valuable possessions. Despite these things, customers, both business & commercial, still have no problem finding photographers who will, & do shoot those jobs for pittance at unprofitable rates. So it’s a sad thing that low rates paid in the market today are due largely to photographers not valuing their work highly enough. Some photographers claim they do it for the “love”. Rubbish. There is nothing that says that just because you love photography it’s worth nothing. In fact people should be paying you well for your passion & creativity because it’s clear to see it’s a pretty rare & valuable thing. The images professional photographers create of a moment in time are a powerful communication tool, a valuable asset & often irreplaceable! On the NZIPP front expect to see the full programme & Registration Brochure for Infocus 2011 in Rotorua out in the next couple of weeks. We had hoped to release the full programme for Infocus in this issue, but we still have a few details to sort out – mainly because the Board have all been too busy in the last month to meet & sign off on some things. We do have some great speakers & education lined up for you. Now is also the time you should be editing & working on images for your awards entries & save the stress of doing them the last minute! Commercial Directors Report
Everyone makes mistakes, after all we are only human. When you are out on a shoot you want to be look professional, act professional, be professional. One of the most embarrassing things that can happen is that ice cold feeling at the moment you realize that you have forgotten that a vital piece of kit on a shoot. You might be able to improvise, could just look like a complete muppet or in the worse case scenario it could jeopardise the creative outcome and even leave you at a commercial risk of a reshoot or worse. It’s usually the little things that are easily forgotten that cause the most grief such as the tripod quick release plate, batteries or heaven forbid…digital media. Go on and admit it, you’ve been there! These days the vast majority of commercial assignments are done on location. Partly it’s because fewer photographers have their own studios, but also that locations often have a realism, feel and mood that is authentic. When working on location you can’t simply go to your gear shelf or cupboard and pull out an item you discover is missing mid shoot. I find that the commercial jobs I shoot are quite varied, with the amount and type of kit that I take to various jobs differing significantly. I don’t have a one size fits all set of gear. On some shoots it all fits in a backpack, others can be multiple cases full of lenses, lighting, IT etc. To minimize the potential for errors from these varied needs and circumstances, and to make sure nothing is forgotten I’ve created a set of checklists that are referred to when packing for shoots. I don’t just read the list to myself, I make a point of touching every item on the list just like a pilot doing pre-flight checks. This ensures that nothing is left behind, otherwise it’s very easy to miss mission critical items like sync cords. The checklists cover every single item that is to be taken on the shoot; obvious stuff like cameras and lenses, to more obscure but equally vital things such as a spirit level, cable releases or a polarising filter. I also include items on the lists such as sunscreen, muesli bars and drinks, as these are often overlooked and regretted later when that overcast day suddenly clears up, or when you need that mid-afternoon nutritional sugar rush. Also usually packed on shoots is a small “MacGyver” tool kit with pliers, screwdrivers, sensor cleaners etc. Murphy’s law dictates that that the odds that the leg on your tripod suddenly becoming loose or a large chunk of dust turning up on your sensor is inversely proportional to the time and distance you are from the remedy to fix it. I also carry a few spares such as a quick release plate and batteries in the car, plus a couple of SD cards in my wallet at all times. These measures and the checklists have saved shoots from disaster numerous times. It also amazing how often stuff I’ve packed also gets utilised by the client because they forget things themselves such as phone chargers or even a pen and paper. Overall it does make shoots more efficient and you look more professional.

Every now and then I get in a conversation with someone who asks about the NZIPP and what’s in it for them. I rabbit on for a bit about the cool people I’ve met, the amazing images I’ve seen, experiences I’ve had. And if their eyes haven’t glazed over completely I tell them a bit more about getting to hang out with these incredibly talented photographers and how with their advice and inspiration my photography and my business have improved markedly. And this is all true of course. But I can’t help wondering if in some ways they aren’t asking the wrong question. With apologies to JFK “Ask not what NZIPP can do for you, ask what you can do for NZIPP”. I have had some amazing opportunities through the NZIPP but to be honest, most of the benefit I’ve got is because I said ‘yes’. When Peter Kampenhout (then our regional chair) told me he thought I’d make a great secretary I said yes. Even though I didn’t believe him. When Bob Tulloch asked me if I would take candid photographs at Infocus 2008 I said yes. Even though the thought of it terrified me. Each of these opportunities gave me infinitely more benefit than the time they cost me. The 2011 subs invoices have gone out and times are tough, I know there will people hesitating over their chequebooks, wondering what’s really in it for them. If you’re one of them could I suggest that maybe, just maybe, you might be asking the wrong question?

Honours Council Report
Entering into the Epson / NZIPP Iris Awards should be considered a major part of your yearly advertising budget. Even if you only achieve one award each year, this will still put you into the category of being an Award Winner in 2011. Plus it will give you the opportunity to tell all your current and potential clients that you are an award winner and deserving of being hired. Being a category winner, or even better – Professional Photographer of the Year, means that you have greater marketing potential than all of your competitors. Think about it early and give yourself the time to make your entries as good as they can possibly be. Don’t compromise your abilities by leaving your printing until the last minute as usually happens. This year as a part of the changes to the judging procedures, we are introducing an instant rejudge of all images that score 79 or 89 so that no entrant will be left in any doubt as to whether their image was really a silver or a gold. Sometimes in the past the average score resulted in a score that not all the judges agreed with but were unable to challenge due to the procedures. From this year onward, the judge majority will count by the panel chair asking the judges to either score 79 or 80 for a silver or 89 or 90 for a gold. Every year the Honours Council reviews the judging procedures in an attempt to improve them for the betterment of the entrant, making sure that the results are fair and honest. With the increased number of entries there is more and more pressure on Honours to get it right, and we do our best but know that things can always be improved. To this extent we now have a procedures manual for the judging process and the event management so that any one of us on Honours can easily be replaced by a new member without losing any continuity with the past. This is a great step forward and will smooth any transitions into the future. Sincerely,
Mike Langford Chairman - NZIPP Honours Council On behalf of the Honours Board including: Shelly Amerio-Higgins, Stuart Riddell, Malcolm Somerville, Ollie Dale & Kaye Davis.

NZIPP Brand Standards 2011
Finally - after many years - the NZIPP has redeveloped NZIPP Brand Standards. This document provides a comprehensive guide to the way the NZIPP logo should be used by Qualified Members, Corporate Members, and Sponsors. The NZIPP logo is so much more than just a symbol and a typeface. It’s our visual and brand identity, which is central to most successful organisations. It represents who the NZIPP is and what we stand for. It is important to create a clear, consistent visual image for the NZIPP brand. Qualified Members consistently using the NZIPP logo on their marketing material provides the opportunity to strengthen our overall image and professionalism within the industry.
The Brand Standards outlines how the NZIPP logo can be used on marketing and promotional material for Qualified Members such as: •
email signatures
•
brochures
•
business cards
•
advertisements
•
web pages

Q Submission Dates
For those who aren’t qualified yet it’s time to start planning a Q submission in 2011. Once successful you’ll be able to advertise your NZIPP qualification, & your profile will appear in the Find a Photographer function on the NZIPP website. Mark the Q submission dates in your diaries & start planning now! Tuesday 17 May 2011 Tuesday 30 August 2011 Tuesday 15 November 2011 For more info see the Q Programme under Quick Links on the NZIPP website.
Using the term ‘NZIPP Qualified’
Just a quick reminder that the use of this term is for those photographers who have passed the NZIPP Q (Qualification) process as outlined on the NZIPP website. In multi-shooter studios it is important to make it clear that the qualification is earned and held by individual photographers, not the studio as a whole. For an overview of how the NZIPP logo should be used please refer to newly released NZIPP Brand Standards located in the Members area on the NZIPP website.

2011 Q Workshops
This is a short summary of the key points from recent Q workshops held in Auckland and Wellington. If you’d like a Q workshop in your area, talk to your Regional Chair & if there’s sufficient interest we’ll make it happen. NZIPP qualifications & distinctions are highly regarded, & are recognised across the world as a benchmark of excellence. The Qualified Professional Status or ‘Q” is achieved by submission for peer review. While the standard is high (& necessarily so) it’s important to note these are not necessarily award winning images, rather they should be ‘professional standard’ i.e. an image that scores in the mid to high 60’s at print judging. At the most basic level, work of a professional standard is characterised by control. Before the image is captured this equates to controlling exposure, controlling the situation, & by having the appropriate gear & using it well. If the photographer has used available light, it should be used/controlled in a purposeful way. If extra light is added (whether by video light, strobes, flash or whatever), again it should be appropriate to the situation & used skillfully (with particular care to avoid tell tale signs like flash shadow). Posing should be flattering to the subject (unless the purpose requires it to be otherwise), & their expression relaxed & appropriate to the purpose of the image. Beyond the capture, professional finishing requires control of colour temperature, consistency of skin tone, strong black and white conversion, appropriate cropping and control of the quality of the final print. Regional Updates Auckland Region 2011 AGM Chairman’s Report – Ollie Dale, Wednesday 13 April 2011 At the close of the 2010-11 year the Auckland region had 104 Student, Emerging, Provisional and Qualified members, up on last year’s 97, so overall our membership continues to grow, which is fantastic. The last 12 months have seen another great selection of events and educational opportunities for our local members. My favourites would have to be last May’s visit to Russell Hamlet’s studio, where we were treated to 4 hours of inspiration from an awesome businessman and well-respected photographer, and then A Tonic in November, which was a sold-out day of workshops in various disciplines of our craft. Last year’s visit to Queenstown for the Iris Awards and Infocus conference was also a big highlight, as my good friend and Auckland member Blair Quax shocked everyone and himself by winning Wedding Photographer of the Year, not to mention all the other successes our region had. As always, we’re keen to hear your feedback on our work, and the events we plan for you, so please tell us when something’s wrong, and tell everyone when something’s right! Auckland Executive The volunteer nature of the Executive has meant there have been several changes in the last few months to the Auckland Executive team, with the biggest change about to happen as Andrew, Fiona and myself step down from our roles. I’m looking forward to the challenge of the NZIPP Honours Council and the Iris Awards, and Andrew and Fiona with their combined years of service to the Auckland Executive are looking forward to a wellearned break. I’m pleased to announce the new Auckland Executive team looks like this: •
Talia Stephens – Chairman/Chairperson/Chair-bro
•
Leanie Ferreira – Secretary
•
Gino Demeer – Treasurer
•
Team - Chris Traill, Sean Dick, Luci Harrison & Lisa Crandall
I’m very excited about the strength, experience and energy of the new team! I commend those of you who have accepted your nominations, and I wish you all the best in the future of the Auckland region. The Future For NZ – The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme that the National Board are in the process of developing will be an amazing and enlightening change to our membership, encouraging active participation in the NZIPP across the country, which will boost the whole industry and can only be a good thing.

Thank you also to the other members who give advice, offer up your studios for monthly meetings, and generally help us all for the good of photography in Auckland. We all sincerely appreciate it! Regional Updates Wellington Region Wellington has begun April with two events that follow on from the regional “Masterplan” set in place after the very thorough work done on setting objectives and a 90 day rolling horizon of activity. First was a Regional AGM held in ‘The Red Engine Room’ on board the Parade Cafe - now relocated in a historic tug boat on the harbour edge. Terry Wreford-Hann remains as Regional Chair and Robyn Greening as Secretary/Treasurer, who are well supported by a strong Regional Committee. Nicola (ctr) Esther Bunning on left
Nicola leading discussion Images by Nick Servian
Next came the Q Workshop at Nick Servian’s Studio in Brooklyn. Hamilton based National Wedding Director Nicola Inglis led a NZIPP Q workshop for eleven participants on Monday 18 April, and was ably supported by both Esther Bunning and Nick Servian. •
Esther Bunning, NZIPP Qualified Portrait & Wedding Photographer, www.estherbunning.com. Esther is a Fellow of the NZIPP (FNZIPP)
•
Nick Servian, NZIPP Qualified Commercial Photographer, www.nickservian.com. Nick is both a FNZIPP & Honorary Fellow of the NZIPP.
Nicola set the scene by talking through the various criteria the judges work to when reviewing a Q submission. She then discussed examples of both successful and unsuccessful submissions. Once all queries were answered participants’ were each given the opportunity to present a selection of work and gain constructive criticism from Nicola, and/or Esther and Nick. Some initial feedback from participants includes: “The workshop helped me with deciding what work to put in, the pointers on what they are looking for, and what works well for submissions was very helpful. It was also really good to see examples of pass and fails.” “I got exactly what I expected from the workshop: a good understanding of the Q judging process and a look into the minds of at least one or two people that might be involved; the chance to see some successful and failed attempts (very valuable) and a chance to get my possible work precritiqued. All in all, very good.” ”For me, the key thing was actually having Nicola present. There was a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the room (with Esther and Nick happy to provide feedback) but having an actual current Q panel judge made it worthwhile. Very good indeed!” Comments also included the scariness of presenting work for critique in front of a large group, with one participant suggesting that in future participants might be offered the opportunity to have their work individually critiqued. Another participant felt that whilst the group was large, everyone got a fair say and all who wanted to had their work critiqued. “I found a major advantage of the larger group process was the group learning and the fact that everyone had a chance to make comment and ask questions of each other.”

We were very fortunate to have Press photographer Iain McGregor speak to us this month. Iain finished at CPIT in 1998 and in the relatively short time since he has covered a huge variety of photojournalism jobs and events. He has won 7 Qantas awards in that time – a stunning achievement. He’s photographed at the Commonwealth Games, and was recently in South Africa for the World Cup – the highlights being the passion and emotion of both the locals and visitors. As well as showing us stunning images, he gave us many behind the scenes stories, realities of life on the job, and technical insights. The last 6 months have been particularly hard. From going from the highs of the World Cup (including squeezing in time for personal photo essay’s of the locals playing football), he has photographed the long wait at Pike River, and more recently he was in Cashel Mall immediately after the recent Christchurch earthquake. Iain made particular comment on the unsung heroes of that day – the ordinary men and women who got stuck in helping people, at great risk to their own lives straight after the quake, before the emergency services arrived. A very informative, inspiring, and reflective evening.

Regional Updates Central Districts Region Regional AGM The Central Districts AGM was held April 11 in Feilding this year at the Focal Point Cinema. As usual to get members to make the long journey we added an attractive seminar, this year Anthony McKee from Melbourne - a wee village to the west of us.
Anthony’s Fresnel Spot Light
The AGM witnessed the retirement of Regional Chair Gerald Wilson & Secretary Malcolm Somerville. The nature of this far-flung territory needs good local organisers for more easily do-able social/discussion gatherings... so incoming this year to do that are Regional Organisers Shayne Jeffares in Napier & Sarah Dong in Palmerston North. Incoming Chair is Mark Bellringer of Eltham / New Plymouth who will team with Chris Hill as Treasurer, (also of New Plymouth). In general business the region decided to donate $1,000 to the NZIPP Christchurch Earthquake Support fund. The region is in good hands for the future. Anthony McKee Seminar Anthony provided a complete range of personal background, inspiring discussion on documentary photography as well as an insight into lighting. For his lighting demonstrations Anthony was assisted by Tony Reisima of our programme sponsors Wellington Photographic Supplies who had a wide display of product on hand. Making it all work for him & creating simple, uncomplicated lighting systems such as being able to carry a credible lighting kit almost anywhere in Melbourne’s CBD - even on trams & trains! Knowing lighting principles well lets you take more creative control of the most challenging environments. “....with cameras working very well at high ISO’s, we gain another control factor in lighting situations that previously needed a lot more & bigger lights”. Anthony demonstrated a number of novel & effective lighting set-ups & devices. The most intriguing & effective device was one he had developed himself: with not much more than a simple Fresnel lens (of the flexible type you can get from the $2 shop), & sitting out on 4 rods about 25 cm from his flash; Anthony had developed a great spot lighting unit. This example taken of Shelley Amerio Higgins across a room during a break. Anthony then left us to visit family & friends in Christchurch as well as presenting at the Forrester Gallery in Oamaru where his major project “The Half way Line” is being exhibited until June 12. But that’s another story.

The Missing Links Written by Malcolm Somerville
Crickey Dick. Things move at great speed, sometimes it all amazes & makes you wonder, other times you think, why not. Sal Criscillo sent me a YouTube link to a presentation that was made by Corning Glass, at just over 5 minutes it sets a future use scenario of many of glass surfaces we already have & experience. What it does do well is extend scale, applications & interactivity of content. Clever glass backed by very clever processing power & intelligence. Others such as Sony are demonstrating similar performance of flexible materials. But really, why not, we are already on the edge, have a look, somewhere photographers fit in to all that, or will we? Are we being relegated to single dimension history, are we going to loose traction without grasping a wide part of the image spectrum? The tools are here already, being able to make images move, give them dimension, make them compatible to the tools our current & future clients will have & need. I know many photographers get Vincent Laforet’s blogs so are already well aware of the fast changing world of imaging that has encompassed the moving image.... last week the annual NAB show was held & a ton of new stuff was announced... here Vincent looks at some of the new cameras, but that’s not all. Apple took the opportunity to announce the next generation of Final Cut Pro, due in June. Read the initial impression from Larry Jordan on his blog Larry is one of many digital media guru’s, but well worth having his site in your sight. But I depart a bit from my main thoughts. Photographers are at risk. What are our parallels? Just over the fence we were part of a greater photofinishing industry, mostly as customers but in many cases it was part of our business. By the 1990’s photofinishing 1 Hour labs were in a near vertical growth spurt, consumers owned more 35 mm cameras, enjoyed better results, shot more film. By the early 2000’s it began to level off, still film based but different distribution, new channels, pricing based on different business propositions. By the end of that decade came consolidation & closures, supermarkets left the game, other players arrived. Digital dominated. The consumer was winning all around. Better product, better prices & also more participation in creating, managing & modifying the image. So how close are we to that cycle? How do we protect our patch? That discussion is ongoing. Or do we just hope it all goes away. Think a bit more about Corning’s implications, we now seem so close to it, shouldn’t we be excited by the opportunity? My grandson, aged 6, is surrounded by a visual environment that most of us only dreamed of. He accepts clever phones, iPads, clever classroom AV systems, 3d movies .... as a consumer of the present & future he’s moving from why to why not. Cheers Malcolm PRO REPORT Member Magazine of the NZIPP

Although I do other types of photography, this is very much my specialty, and I enjoy constantly trying to perfect it. Most of my work is shot with multiple exposures, which are layered and blended in Photoshop. I also do virtual tours and floor plans. What do you love about the professional photographic industry? NZIPP, I think the advice and interaction with other photographers is invaluable. Also I love the fulfilment it gives me to turn my passion into a career. I have a lot more to learn, but the journey is awesome! Something that makes you grumpy? The weather forecast and the fact that I have to rely on it! Website or blog site that you enjoy? Facebook, although I think it’s a love hate relationship. Are you a collector of anything? Do kids toys and books count? Name one thing not many people know about you: I’m doing a home correspondence Maori course with the Open Wananga. My daughters are Maori so I need to keep them involved in their culture. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: No responsibility. List five things you would need to survive, if left alone on a deserted island.

Entries Close: 17 May 2011 This is the seventh year of the Art of Photography Show. This major photographic exhibition is an ideal forum for photographers to exhibit & sell their work, reaching our large community of art collectors, corporate heads, affluent individuals, civic leaders & very influential people who make up the Art of Photography Show audience. Show Highlights: • $10,000 in award money will be given to artists in the Art of Photography Show 2011. • Our key goal is to sell the art for the photographers. This is not a “vanity show”. • Over 30,000 people will view the Art of Photography Show 2011 during the nine week run at the Lyceum gallery. • A superb 80 page show catalog will be given to everyone at the Opening Reception Gala and is made available for free at each special event during the exhibition. • We sell a very large percentage of the work, of which the artists receive most all of the revenue. We donate 100% of our portion of the art sales revenue to an international charity called The AjA Project. For more details and to enter visit http://www.artofphotographyshow.com/

Industry News
MAY 2011
Industry News Canon Oceania outlines local impact of Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami Canon New Zealand and Australia today (04 April) confirmed that the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated Japan last month will have an impact on its consumer products business locally. As a result of the damage to the Canon operations, and those of its suppliers in the areas most affected by the disaster, Canon Oceania has assessed that: •
There will be product shortages across the entire Canon camera portfolio; including cameras, videos, lenses and parts for camera repairs
•
Canon expects supply shortages will start to impact from around the middle of April and will continue to be felt through the middle of the year and potentially into the third quarter of this year.
•
There will be minimal impact on the supply of Canon consumer printing and consumable stocks; therefore only minor supply shortages in the coming months.
“We have advised our retail partners here in New Zealand of the impact on our business and are working closely with them to carefully manage supplies to ensure all our customers’ needs are met to the best of our ability,” said Mike Johnston, Country Manager of Canon New Zealand. “Our Japanese colleagues are doing everything humanly possible to recover from this tragedy, and a comprehensive recovery plan spanning development, production and sales operations has been swiftly put into place. “We express our deepest sympathies to those who have experienced loss as a result of this terrible tragedy and will continue to support our colleagues in Japan as they start the rebuilding process,” concluded Johnston.
