Letter from the Editors “It’s been a pleasure to get to know all the sponsors and exhibitors.”
SEPTEMBER 2010
With the Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards and Infocus 2010 Conference just around the corner, the NZIPP Board and Staff have all been busy organising the final touches. For those out there still thinking about attending there are still some great deals on flights and accommodation available. We would also like to acknowledge the fantastic support we have had received from sponsors and exhibitors, without their generous support Infocus would not be possible. It’s been a pleasure to get to know all the sponsors and exhibitors. From us personally, we are looking forward to meeting more members in Queenstown for what is shaping up to be a fantastic week.
Kind regards

Now is that the right way to crop it? Would it be stronger as a black and white? Has this shot got potential to be worked on? Is there enough emotion? Should I add another blended layer? Perfect - yep that’s a Gold now - its gotta be – or…. maybe it’s just too out there to get anything.... Arrrgghhh!! Next print please.... Things I guess many of you will be battling with as I sit here writing this. I have to say getting a Gold last year and achieving Master of Photography was definitely the highlight of my year. Sitting in the judging room as my print was discussed by the judges for gold winning points was both adrenalin pumping and nerve-racking. I enjoyed a celebratory drink or three that night! It sure makes it worth all those hours put into the prints. Whatever you are working on I wish you all the best with your awards entries. There will be images that challenge our thoughts about photography and there will be images that polarise people to love or hate an image, but I have no doubt the majority of award winning images will be mind blowing and a showcase for the incredible talent in our industry. After a bit of a slow start with registrations, Infocus in Queenstown is shaping up to be a great event with the highest number of delegates registered ever. Despite tough economic times we also have phenomenal support from the trade. A huge thank you to you all in particular Epson our naming sponsor for another year’s support!
“I can guarantee at least one of the speakers will have something that improves the way you do business and increase your profits”
If you’re at Infocus do make sure you thank all our sponsors and supporters at their exhibition stands and don’t forget to thank NZIPP’s hardworking staff either - Fiona, Arna, Nerida & Deborah! They’ve put in a lot of hours to make the event a success. Looking forward to catching up with many of you down there. We are sure you will have a great time and enjoy the speakers lined up for you - Michael Grecco, Robert Piccoli, Graeme Monro, Jackie Ranken, Michelle Malcolm, Alan Dove and Doc Ross – it’s a broad line-up and I can guarantee at least one of the speakers will have something that improves the way you do business and increase your profits. If you haven’t booked yet - there is still time. OK time to start writing my D-photo column and then it’s onto my speech for the awards dinner .... (I think I’d rather be stressing over print entries!)
See you in Queenstown!!
Cheers

You can measure success in many ways. It was great to see a regular high achieving NZIPP member, Chris McLennan’s recent successes in several international photographic awards (as you will read elsewhere in PRO REPORT). In early August it was the National Geographic Traveller PDN Photo Awards, only weeks later he followed it up with the Photography Masters Cup, International Awards. Chris makes great use of these successes in promoting his business and himself. How many other photographers do you know with over 12 000 people liking their Facebook page? Click here to have a look at Chris’s page. Another success but in a totally different way was the recent Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) decision that a segment that ran on Fair Go in November last year featuring an image of a tree and a rainbow did breach New Zealand broadcasting standards. At the time I smelt a rat and within a few minutes online found the photographers website, downloaded the image, verified that the metadata corroborated the photographers claims, found the location on Google Earth, could see the tree in question and was able to use a sunrise/sunset calculator to confirm that the sunset seen at the location came from the same direction as seen in the photo at the date and time the photo was taken. I personally laid a complaint with TVNZ. The American photographer who created the image, Dan Bush also made a formal complaint to TVNZ. Like me, his complaint was dismissed by TVNZ. Dissatisfied with this result, Mr Bush referred it to the BSA. They upheld the complaint that the segment did not meet the standards for accuracy & fairness. Prior to the publishing of the BSA’s findings Fair Go did broadcast a correction. The BSA said “The correction was then broadcast in the second episode, which was not the earliest opportunity, and in our view it was a token statement which further trivialised the matter and which contained no admission that Fair Go was responsible for the mistake.” TVNZ were order to pay $1000 cost to the Crown. Small change for the state broadcaster but still a big slap in the face. You can read the BSA’s decision at the BSA website. In the next few weeks you have the opportunity to have some success for yourself. Entries for the Iris Awards are now open and close in a week. The prize pool tops $20 000. As they say, you have to be in to win! If you want to give your business a shot in the arm then it’s still not too late to register for the Infocus Conference. Registrations this year are higher than ever before and the delegates are sure to learn plenty and enjoy a number of social events and it’s 100% tax deductible. Wishing you a great month with many successes - no matter how big or small.

With Infocus coming up & the board’s drive to get all you guys there, it once again has made me wonder why for some of you it’s such a hard decision. Straight away if your thoughts are you can’t afford it, that is really a bullshit excuse! With all the great flight/accommodation deals you can do it for around $500. That gives you a bloody great time, an awesome learning experience, & it’s being held in one of the most gorgeous parts of the planet. If this seems too much then “chunking” is the way to go for you. Instead of having to come up with a lump sum, which gets put into a too hard basket for some, get an A.P. started for next time at $20.00 a week. Don’t tell me you can’t afford that, because I know you are like me feeding the brats at least once a week at Mac D’s, or a few coffees, beers, fags, mags or whatever we waste heaps on cos we don’t count the little bits. We are part of a great movement of people who care & share with each other. How the hell can you possibly want to miss such a great all round occasion, which is only once a year? If you are coming, awesome see you there. If not get your act together because I want to see you there, really I do.
“Either way I will share my experiences with my fellow members, so that those brave enough to back themselves will take what they need from my journey.”
While I am on this train of thought, (most of the time I haven’t a clue what’s coming next!) part of serving you guys on the board involves communicating with members who have not fronted with their subs. Now for some it might be financial pressure & ironically you being a member is your solution, especially if you listen to those who want you to be successful like I do. One person said to me “What’s the bloody point of being a member?”. My mental reply to this particular individual was “Users are Losers & Givers are Winners”. Coming from a “what’s in it for me” approach all the time misses the point of belonging to any group of people with a common interest. Caring & sharing is what it’s all about. Believe it or not no matter what level of success you are experiencing everyone has something to offer others by way of your own journey. By being totally open with my peers through all my years in the NZIPP, I have received back ten fold. To be honest I am totally shitting myself, dash excited about to start a new venture in shopping malls. It’s the biggest thing I have ever tried to achieve. Do I need others advice to help me, hell yes. Am I afraid of asking for it, hell no. Am I being given it, absolutely. If it works I’ll be rolling in it, if it doesn’t I’ll be in the shit, but either way I will share my experiences with my fellow members, so that those brave enough to back themselves will take what they need from my journey. If you are going to Queenstown you will hear from my dear mate Robert Piccoli. Hugely successful from photography, he has always openly shared the right way to do things. Was he afraid this would affect his bottom line in his market? No way because we are all different, & will always take a bit of this & that, & do it our own way. He shared, I listened & I will forever be grateful. If you are questioning the value of belonging to the NZIPP I believe this is symptomatic of a mind-set that I am sure will be holding you back in other areas as well. Look to yourself to see what you can give & you too shall receive ten fold. I look forward to meeting and sharing with you so that both our journeys are the better for it.

SEPTEMBER 2010
Regional Updates Canterbury / Westland Region Lights, Camera, Action! We held the August meeting of the Canterbury / Westland division at Whitebait TV studios www.whitebait-tv.com. This is a state of the art TV production studio that has been built from the ground up inside a 100 year old grain store by Jason Gunn and Janine Morrell-Gunn. They employ 45 people. Several years ago TVNZ closed their Christchurch studio and Jason and Janine took a punt and invested millions of dollars fitting out two large studios and all the associated production, post-production, wardrobe, make up, and green rooms. They make five hours of television each week including What Now, and the Erin Simpson Show, as well as doing commercials and corporate video work. Members were taken on a detailed tour of all the facilities and everyone was impressed by the scale and professionalism of the studio.

After the tour and pizza, local video producer Jason Larraman www. maninyourhead.co.nz talked to us about his experiences shooting HD Video on the Canon 7D, including two recent trips to Turkey and Tanzania for Kathmandu. He also showed us video’s produced in the US, which showed the stunning results produced on DSLR’s. Our thanks go to Emma Turnball and Richard Hansen from Whitebait TV for the tour and use of their studios, and to Jason Larraman for his informative presentation. It was also good to see most members attending this meeting including out of towners, travelling from the West Coast and South Canterbury regions.

Regional Updates
Central Districts Region On August 4 Central Districts took advantage of joining with UCOL to present a 2-hour seminar -”INTRODUCTION TO THE MOVING IMAGE FROM YOUR HDSLR”. Lecturer Mel Edmon was beginning a new semester project with Second Year Photography students and wanted to expose them to trends that most impact on HDSLR owners with the new capacity to shoot HD video. A number of our members are also interested in seeing and hearing how it is being done too. Using Cinema FX (a community arts funded digital hi-def cinema) as venue and Taranaki member Mark Bellringer as presenter a very complete foundation was established as Mark guided people through his experiences. He is a veteran video producer who has been shooting stills in commercial and weddings for a number of years. Now the bulk of his production is off his Canon EOS 7D and 5Dmk2’s, finishing as he has always done on Apple’s Final Cut. He was able to show clips of past work and a corporate documentary (work in progress). Mark’s experience as an educator was obvious with a well constructed and paced presentation. As well, he had arranged for some basic DSLR accessory kit to demo from his Wellington based supplier... Rubber Monkey who are distributors and hirers of a number of ‘must have’ brands....Zakuto, Redrock Micro, Ikan etc. See www.rubbermonkey.co.nz Although local attendance was disappointing, we had 3 members who came from Waikato for the day! Plus students who are enthusiastically adding multimedia skills to their skills. Theses are the same students who will be in Queenstown this year to do all the behind the scenes stuff for Print Judging - at a cost of $800.00 each - they are very focussed on being current and competitive when they emerge.

It’s all about being relevant and having context...... and exploring options. No matter what area of photography you are ‘in’ or ‘at’ as the case may be, despite what current and future business you think you have, nothing is set in concrete. Not only is your opportunity being set on fire or limited by technology, demographics, politics or financial affairs; it is also being self limited if you are closed to change and risk. We must look outside our comfort levels, find new allies, know more of not just technology (that’s a given) but being aware of what your current and future market is doing. Are you delivering the right product, in the right package? Is your buyer reformatting your product for their own end use. With Apple’s iPad and other portable ‘slates’ hitting the market, are you supplying iPad ready content? Do you know how to? What impact will the large TV screen have as they continue to go into home and business. Latest stats from the US show a massive growth in 40’, 50” and larger. What implications for the quality of your work.? What visual demands are being made on style and graphic impact of your work?

imaging & entertainment expo For many years the annual PMA Australia convention and trade show was pretty much photo industry, photo products and venue for photo allied industries. It has been the annual venue for the APPA judging event in a nice symbiotic relationship. Digital arrived and changed the mix of participants, next year the show gets a new name and wider content that recognises the converging technologies. Imaging & Entertainment Expo and it will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour, Friday 24th to Sunday 26th June 2011. Click here for the full article.

Industry News
SEPTEMBER 2010
Industry News Fair Go As reported in the NZ Herald, Wednesday 11 August. The Fair Go item screened on TVOne in November last year during an episode about the copyright of online photos. A New Zealand woman claimed a photo she had taken of a tree underneath a rainbow had been posted on the internet and the rights to it claimed by another person.

A Fair Go reporter discussed the various websites on which the photo appeared , including one where a man claimed to have taken the photo in Missouri, USA. The photo was shown on the website with a caption reading “A Full Rainbow, Photograph by Dan Bush”. The reporter said she had contacted the man and said: “He claims that it’s his photo, so we’ll try to get to the bottom of it.” Mr Bush complained to TVNZ that Fair Go had suggested he had stolen the photo from the woman interviewed. He maintained he had taken the photo. TVNZ maintained that the programme had not accused Mr Bush of any wrongdoing but accepted the photo was taken by Mr Bush and said that the Fair Go item had been removed from TVNZ’s website and replaced with text saying Mr Bush was the owner of the photo and that the story would be revisited when Fair Go returned in 2010. A correction was broadcast on May 12. TVNZ declined to uphold Mr Bush’s complaint, which he referred to the BSA. In its decision, the BSA said the programme clearly conveyed the message that the woman in New Zealand owned the rights to the image, and therefore that Mr Bush had stolen it. “Although some doubt was introduced at the end of the item... we consider that viewers would still have been left with the strong impression that the woman in New Zealand was the rightful owner and that he was being dishonest.” Therefore, the programme was misleading. The BSA made the rare move of ordering TVNZ to pay $1000 costs to the Crown. Costs were ordered because TVNZ’s written response to Mr Bush trivialised the complaint and despite promising to broadcast a correction in this year’s first episode, the correction was not broadcast until the second episode and was “a token statement which further trivialised the matter and which contained no admission that Fair Go was responsible for the mistake,” the BSA ruled.
