The NIKON Iris Professional Photography Awards have been running for 37 years. Hosted by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography, they are New Zealand’s premiere awards for professional photographers. 2020 has seen everyone across the globe facing challenges brought on by the Covid-19 global pandemic. As countries around the world went into lock down and people retreated into their homes, communicating and connecting with others across the internet became the new norm. Individuals, businesses, and organisations all scrambled to find and create new ways of doing “business as usual”. With so much uncertainty, in what are surreal times, the decision to take the 2020 Iris Awards online was made very early on. As Zoom meetings and webinars became commonplace in the online world this became the direction taken for the 2020 Iris Awards, and the word “challenge” became an understatement as the NZIPP Honours Council embarked on bringing to life the digital, online Iris Awards. Running this year’s event as digital awards provided a huge bonus for entrants through the reduced cost of entering, leading to unprecedented entry numbers. This meant there was a need to carry out a preliminary round of online judging. Panels of judges, across 15 categories, independently assessed and scored 2740 entries through the online judging system. Then the eyes of the photographic world were upon us on August 20th as the live online judging kicked off. Over nine days, top judges from across Australasia joined together in Zoom to judge entries, each session live-streamed via YouTube. The Iris Awards are a forum where professional photographers have the opportunity to have their work peer reviewed by panels of distinguished national and international judges. Photographers are challenged to develop and grow their photographic practice and capabilities through entering. The awards also helping to establish standards within the profession. Entries were spread across 15 categories: Commercial, Creative, Documentary, Expressive, Family, Illustrative, Landscape In-Camera, Landscape Open, Nature, Portrait InCamera, Portrait Open, Student, Travel, Wedding In-Camera, and Wedding Open. The standard of judging was exceptional, as was the standard of entries that came from as far afield as Canada and South Africa. The passion and enthusiasm brought by the judges was incredible and they fully embraced the “new” Iris Awards format.

From both the preliminary and live online judging, judges awarded; 912 Bronze, 562 Silver, 121 Silver with Distinction, 48 Gold, and 10 Gold with Distinction awards. The 2020 Iris awards rounded off with an online awards presentation, held on Monday 14 September, with the top award of NZ Professional Photographer of the Year, going to Wairarapa based photographer Esther Bunning. Jackie Ranken was announced the winner of the overall highest-scoring entry, Perth based photographer Nathan Maddigan was awarded International Professional Photographer of the Year, Geoff Ridder received the James White Memorial Award (presented to an NZIPP member who as a first-time entrant achieves the highest aggregate from their top four prints), and Jo Frances-Moore was awarded the Janay Johnstone Memorial Award (having the top newborn photograph, determined by a panel of judges). This year’s event was full of enthusiasm and laughter, and whilst everyone was many, many miles apart, the feeling of family and coming together as a community was still there. Covid-19 has had a significant impact on businesses and yet the support from our sponsors has been enormous, and a huge thanks goes out to each and every one of them: Nikon, Canon, Momento Pro, Olympus, Lumix, Epson, Ilford, Rothbury Insurance, Nomadic Planet, D-Photo Magazine, and Edges Art & Framing. To all photographers out there, it is more crucial than ever to build relationships with and support our sponsors by shopping local. Supporting the sponsors ensures the sustainability of our photographic community, which in turn feeds back into your own businesses and what you can offer your clients. A massive congratulations to all those who entered this year’s awards. Win or lose, the Iris Awards are an opportunity to learn and grow in your practise, be inspired by what is possible, and be part of something unique and special within New Zealand’s professional photography community. Celebrate with us, by taking the time to enjoy, immerse yourself in, and be inspired by, all the amazing images on the pages of the 2020 Nikon Iris Professional Photography Awards Pro Report Special Edition. What follows is a visual feast of imagination, innovation, creativity, and mastery of craft, that comes from some of New Zealand’s top photographers.
EXECUTIVE UPDATE
President Update Catherine Cattanach, M.NZIPP IV (Dist.), Accredited Professional Photographer
So it seems Covid-19 is no match for the Iris Awards! It takes a bit more than a global pandemic to kill off photographers’ creative drive, pah. In fact it arguably fuelled that drive in many cases, and the excitement and buzz of the annual NZIPP/Nikon Iris Professional Photography Awards proved the perfect antidote to all those negative headlines.
I thoroughly enjoyed the live judging week, both as a judge and a viewer. There were so many exciting images and great discussions, and I’ve come away fired up with inspiration for next year. I hope you also got a lot out of it - education, inspiration, connection with other photographers, print swaps, marketing opportunities, awards, or all of the above. Huge congratulations to those who added a title, a prize from our generous sponsors and some pretty glass for their shelves! Or in the case of Esther Bunning, the coveted Rowan Guthrie Trophy - well done Esther on being named NZ Professional Photographer of the Year!
The success of the 2020 Iris Awards is a massive credit to the NZIPP’s dedicated Honours Council, led by Kaye Davis. Kaye and her team - Harry Janssen, Tracey Scott, Shar Devine and Paul Daly, with invaluable technical support from Michael Watson - coped admirably with the extra challenges posed by the prospect of taking Iris from print awards into a totally new digital format. Unprecedented entry numbers added to the challenge, and it would have been a lot easier to run Iris like most other online awards, with judging done solely behind the scenes.
But Iris is known and loved for its live judging - the feedback, challenges and debates, and all the excitement (and angst!) that goes along with it. The team managed to recreate the vibe of live print judging by using Zoom, spreadsheets and YouTube, and to get as many entries as possible through to the live judging stage. They put in some extremely long days to make this happen, and we are so grateful.
Kaye leaves very big shoes to fill, but we look forward to welcoming a new Honours Council Chair at our AGM on October 21st, and voting to fill other elected roles as well. We hope as many as you as possible can join us at the AGM, at the Southern Cross Garden Bar in Wellington. We have been short of chances to see each other in person this year! That evening will be a wonderful chance to catch up, and then the following day we have an exciting Summit event planned. We have a portrait studio lighting workshop by Flash Dog Studios in the morning, followed by presentations on creative expressive portraiture by NZ Expressive Photographer of the Year Karolina Stus, and powerful ways to grow your marketing and your business, by creative business coach (and NZIPP Grand Master of Photography) Jason Naylor. The day wraps up with some quick tips from renowned wedding photographer Tim Kelly on dealing with difficult clients. Definitely worth a trip to Wellington!
Thank you again to all the wonderful sponsors who have continued to support NZIPP in what has been a tough year for everyone. We loved having you with us for the Iris Awards, and your support played a huge role in helping us make the awards so successful. We encourage all members to continue to support your local retailers and suppliers - we really are all in this together.
It gives me great pleasure to introduce our newest NZIPP sponsor, MEGA - The Privacy Company. MEGA, with more than 190 million users worldwide, offers encrypted cloud storage and communication. We’re thrilled that they are partnering with us to offer NZIPP members cost-effective, highly secure file storage and backup, special deals and cool giveaways keep an eye out for more information coming soon.
The outstanding success of the 2020 Iris Awards is a wonderfully fitting high note to mark the end of Kaye Davis’s tenure as Honours Council Chair. Kaye has decided to step down from the position after a decade of dedication to the role. She has worked incredibly hard for the NZIPP and we have all benefited from her experience and her generosity. Thank you so much, Kaye.

2020New JAMES WHITE Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year 2020 MEMORIAL AWARD
24
PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP
James White, along with Hugh Perry and Barry Woods, founded the NZIPP Honours system with the first awards being held in 1983. In addition, James held the position of Chairman of Honours during the late 1970’s, and that of NZIPP President between 1981-1982. The history of this award commenced following a trip that James and his wife Judy White made in 1995 to the USA. The trip was to assess the Awards processes being used at the time by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). The self-funded information-gathering trip was to determine if they could be applied to the newly proposed New Zealand Professional Photography Association’s AGFA Awards (NZIPP was previously known as NZPPA). Not long after this James passed away and in consultation with Judy White, the NZIPP Board created the “James White Scholarship” in 1996, in memory of James’s dedication to the future wellbeing of the Institute. 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of James’ passing and this provided an opportunity for NZIPP, in consultation with the White family, to review the award. What resulted is the James White Memorial Award, presented to an NZIPP member who is the highest scoring, first time entrant in any of the open categories of the NZIPP Iris Awards. The winner is determined from an aggregate of their top four highest scoring images. The trophy, commissioned and donated by the White family, holds the medals and awards that James himself received over his years of service to the Inastitute and his own pursuit of excellence in photography.

2020New JANAY JOHNSTONE Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year 2020 MEMORIAL AWARD
28
PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP
NZIPP member Janay Johnstone began her working life as a graphic designer, then launched her newborn photography career in 2015 after the birth of her own son. A talented photographer, Janay was a vivacious person with a heart of gold. She became part of the Heartfelt volunteer network, visiting hospitals to photograph babies who were seriously ill or had died during birth. Janay and her own unborn baby girl sadly passed away together on March 6, 2019. This award has been established by the NZIPP in conjunction with Janay’s husband Mark, and her family, to honour Janay. Finalists are determined based on the top three highest-scoring newborn entries in any of the main categories, excluding the Student Category. The entry that judges deem to best represent the criteria in ‘What the judges are looking for’ is the award winner. The winner will receive a certificate and be presented with the Janay Johnstone Memorial Award trophy. For the purpose of this award, a ‘Newborn’ is defined as an infant up to three months of age; as calculated from the date of delivery if full term (37–42 weeks), or from the due date if premature.

2020New IANZealand POOLE Professional Photographer of the Year 2020 MEMORIAL AWARD
36
PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP
Ian Poole was a man who has left a huge mark and legacy not just in the New Zealand awards, but also in Australia. He was passionate about every facet of photography. A professional photographer for over 50 years and member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), Ian was also an exhibitor, lecturer, mentor, curriculum developer, writer, curator, judge, presenter and assessor of new members to the AIPP.
He joined the AIPP in 1975 and held many positions at state and national levels. Ian judged in the very first test Australian Professional Photography Awards in 1977, and was involved in all APPA events, except one, after that, a total of 39. Ian was an incredibly giving man who brought so much to the development of judging across both sides of the Tasman; actively involved in judges training and taking a special interest in the mentoring of new judges.
In the early 1980’s Ian formed links with Japanese photographers, resulting in exhibitions in both Australia & Japan. He most recently opened an exhibition in Brisbane in February this year. 1986 - Australian delegate to World Photographic Conference in Cologne 1996 - awarded an Australian Council of the Arts residency in Tokyo for 4 months. 2011 - donated over 100,000 images to the Queensland State Library spanning his 30 year commercial photography career.
Ian strongly believed in the Trans Tasman connection. This dated back to the early 2000’s when he first met Wellington photographer Simon Woolfe and Christchurch photographer Dick Poole. Melissa Anderson, a Brisbane based photographer also joined Ian on that first visit. Three speaking tours of New Zealand followed, print critiques, judges training, and a workshop at the Wanaka Autumn Art school. In addition, Ian judged at the Iris Awards for 10 years. His passion, knowledge, insight and well developed sense of visual literacy won the hearts of New Zealand; using the judging arena to educate entrants and judges alike. During this time strong and lifelong friendships were formed.
Early in 2012, Ian was invited by Tim Steele from the f11 magazine team, to contribute a monthly article. The digital magazine, however, stopped production in 2017.
The trophy was created in conjunction with Ian’s widow Louise Jameson. The commissioned trophy is a restored camera of Ian’s, and contains a hidden photograph of Ian judging. As part of this, the trophy camera was restored by Anderson’s Camera Repairs in Brisbane. Louise was present at the 2018 Iris Awards Gala dinner to present the inaugural Ian Poole Memorial award.
AWARDS & HONOURS 2012 - NZIPP Honorary Member 2016 - NZIPP Master of Photography and AIPP Master of Photography 2017 - AIPP Honorary Fellow 2018 - John Oxley Library Award - a prestigious award for an outstanding contribution to Queensland pictorial history.
Commencing in 2018, the Ian Poole Memorial Award is presented annually through recognition of excellence in judging and the significant role judges play in the awards system. The awardee is determined by audience, judge and entrant votes, recognising a judge who demonstrates outstanding qualities and skills as a judge at the annual Iris Awards event.

2020New CURTIS/POOLE Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year 2020 AWARD
40
PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP
The Curtis / Poole Award started in 2009, in memory of two long-standing and colourful characters of the NZIPP, Brian Curtis and Richard Poole. Both were Honorary Fellows of the organisation and contributed much to both the Institute and New Zealand photography in general. In 2015, Jason Boa, ex-NZIPP President, donated an engraved Silver Plate trophy to be awarded to the region in addition to the whiskey drink. The Curtis / Poole Award is presented annually to the NZIPP region that scores the highest aggregate from their four top-performing members’ highest-scoring entries, across any of the main categories. Fully financial NZIPP Accredited and Affiliate Members are eligible to represent their region for this award, however, this excludes Student Category entrants. Where there is a tie between two potential representatives, and also following a countback to determine the print with the highest initial score at judging, both people/names will represent the region but only one of the print scores will be added to the total. A dram of Whisky is given on stage to each member representative of the winning region.

NZIPP are grateful for the support of Lumix NZ as 2020 Sponsor of the NZIPP Iris Awards Landscape Photographer of the Year.
About Panasonic NZ - owner of Lumix brand cameras: Panasonic New Zealand has been a fully established sales company since 1998. With core offerings of consumer electronics and business solutions, we are dedicated to improving the lives of the people of New Zealand through our products. Staying true to the company’s brand promise of creating “A Better Life, A Better World”, we are a highly active member of the community and are always seeking ways to improve our professional relationships.
The Lumix brand was created back in 2001 with a Pair of Compact cameras Featuring LEICA lenses and has Pioneered many features in the compact market that are now considered standard features for example wide angle lens. In 2008 Panasonic Lumix cameras introduced the world to the concept of Mirrorless cameras with the LUMIX G1 the worlds first Mirrorless camera. The Lumix G1 was the founding base for Panasonics Lumix G system that is based on the Micro 4/3 standard that is a shared mount with brands like Olympus and Black Magic. It is this system that Popular cameras like the GH5 and G9 are based around and offer a Light weight and mobile shooting platform for Professionals and Enthusiasts alike.
In 2018, 10 years after creating the mirrorless category Panasonic Lumix pushed the Full Frame market forward with the introduction of their Lumix S system. The Lumix S system is a Full Frame Mirrorless camera system that sits alongside their Lumix G system. One of the key and unique parts of the Lumix S system is the mount it uses is L Mount part of an alliance of brands called the L mount Alliance, the 3 members of the L Mount Alliance are Panasonic, Sigma and Leica. This unique approach is different to all other systems (bar Micro 4/3) in that all 3 Manufacturers are sharing a standardised mount and working together to provide a wider range with better cross brand compatibility. This gives Professional camera shooters better support and choice in one system rather than having to be locked to shooting with just one brand. NZIPP REGIONAL EVENTS SEPTEMBER 2020 NZIPP WELLINGTON EVENT Seeing the Potential and Iris Awards Wrap Up September 29 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm Catherine Cattanach Photography, 35 Sugarloaf Rd, Brooklyn
Join us on September 29 for a talk from Catherine Cattanach, all about making the most of what you’ve got during a portrait shoot, even if that’s not much! We’ll also be celebrating our region’s success in the recent Iris Awards – Wellington was the highest-scoring region in the country, and our beloved Esther Bunning won NZ Photographer of the Year. We’ll be sharing a slideshow of all award-winning images from our talented local photographers, and presenting trophies and certificates to the category winners. In her presentation, Catherine will share a few tricks for getting decent portraits in sub-optimal conditions and in sub-optimal locations. As much as we all love shooting in gorgeous locations with relaxed clients and plenty of time to create, the reality is that many times as photographers we actually just have to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Come along and hear a few ideas of what you can do when you’re in a tight spot. We’d love to see you there. RSVP now! Tuesday September 29th 6pm for a 6.30pm start Address: Catherine’s studio, 35 Sugarloaf Rd, Brooklyn (The studio is beneath the car deck, so once you’re through the gate, head down to your left) FREE for NZIPP/AIPA members, $30 for non-members. Nibbles provided. GET YOUR TICKET HERE

NZIPP CANTERBURY/WESTLAND EVENT The Studio as my Stage with Lisa Powers When: October 19 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm Where: The Studio, 2/16 Bernard Street, Addington
Join us in October to hear commercial and fine art photographer, Lisa Powers! Sharing both amazing photographs and the stories around them, will make an amazing evening! ABOUT LISA POWERS: Lisa Powers was born in France, of French/Italian/American lineage, and raised in New York and Los Angeles. After working as a creative director in a small advertising agency in New York she decided to quit her job and immerse herself in learning photography. With a borrowed NIKON 35mm camera and some guidance from reading the TIME/LIFE books on photography, she started shooting. She got hired as the manager of a large commercial photo studio and was delighted to have the studio, all the equipment and darkroom available to her after-hours. The studio photographers varied from product table-top photographers to portraits, weddings and even a bit of fashion. She kept watching, learning and shooting as much as possible. Soon she started getting assignments. Three years into her photography career, Powers travelled to Japan. In Tokyo, she formed Amnesia Studio, a ‘concept-to-completion’ agency with Japanese graphic designer, Taki Ono. After three years, Powers returned to the US and continued as a freelance commercial photographer working for major clients in advertising, magazine editorials, fashion catalogues, album covers, celebrity portraits and movie ‘one sheet’ posters. Her work has won numerous prestigious awards and she was also honoured with Distinctions Awards by the Royal Photographic Society, UK. She’s been featured in LENS magazine, L’ŒIL de la Photographie (Paris), Dodho Photography magazine and RPS Journal (cover). In 2005 Powers left New York and relocated to New Zealand where she currently lives. She’s shifted away from commercial photography and works primarily in FineArts. She’s had multiple solo gallery exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris and New Zealand. Her work has been acquired for hotel guest rooms as well as in private collections. COASTAL OTAGO AREA UPDATE Coastal Otago/Southland have some exciting speakers coming to Dunedin. 12th October we have John Foster’s “Ways to increase your productivity through smart efficient digital workflow utilizing Lightroom Classic and Photoshop workshop” and 12th November we have Katherine Williams with her “Where my heart sings workshop”. Contact donna@shotz.co.nz for more details on these. Exciting education coming our way with another few speakers in the pipeline as well to look forward to. YAY! So next month we will be able to share what we got up to during Rachael Smith’s Everyday Printing to Fine Art Workshop, and thanks in advance to Ilford’s kind help supplying paper for next week’s workshop. Thank you to NZIPP Board and Honours for working so hard to ensure the Iris awards still went ahead. You all deserve a huge drink and lots of chocolates. Following is a show-case of some of our sub-region members’ awarded entries.
Illustrative BRONZE Vision: Soft delicate image Edited: Photoshop, using layers Flowers: Pink Blossom Flower, and a Peony. Texture added that I had photographed.
I loved the soft colours of this image, a combination of one pink blossom flower, used as the background image and a 2nd image taken indoors of a peony flower. The idea of combining them both, didn’t occur until lock down, when i re-looked at these flower photos, and decided to combine them both, and create the vision I had for one of my image entries this year. MOIRA CLARK MNZIPP V MAIPP
Creative: BRONZE Abstract Photo
Dunedin Cadbury’s building is going to be demolished, and i have always loved this building. I decided to wander down with my camera one early morning, and just loved all the abstract elements that were there, and decided to photograph some multiple exposure photos in the one photo, as some of the photos i took. I entered two of these abstract photos into the awards, and added a tint to it. MOIRA CLARK MNZIPP V MAIPP

DOCUMENTARY: Silver with Distinction
This image was taken at one of my daughter’s kindergarten forest visits. The kids had just run up the hill and all collapsed with exhaustion around the monument at Jubilee Park. I turned and saw little Archie looking rather sleepy when he let out this huge yawn and I grabbed the shot. Nicola Wilhelmson M.NZIPP III (Dist.)
Documentary Category ‘Protest’ - SILVER
It was the protest against the oil conference run in Dunedin at the town hall. Protestors barricaded the entrance. It was quite confronting and I came away shaking afterward. Canon EOS R, f/4, 1/200sec. 200mm. ISO-1000 Andy Thompson

Documentary category ‘Burning Down the House’ - SILVER I followed fire crews as they burnt a house down in training at Sawyers Bay, Dunedin. The speed that fire takes hold of house materials is astonishingly fast. Surrounded by fire service personal I was lucky to be with my camera. I had a spotter to guide me out when it was getting too intense. Canon EOS R, f/8, 1/60sec. 20mm. ISO-1600 Andy Thompson
Landscape in camera - GOLD
My life is quite chaotic and always have too many things on the go. My images often reflect what I crave. Quietness and calm. Just a touch of interest to keep me grounded but always a surprise and sense of fun. Simone Jackson M.NZIPP I (Dist.)

Portrait Open - GOLD
This photo has hung in my studio for a year so seeing as I decided to enter two days before the dead line, I thought I may as well enter it. Leearna wanted some business shots as she was applying for her future career. Suits work well, they always convey that professional grownup image, but I knew she has a really soft girly side with a love of fashion so in this shot my vision was to combine the busyness of a working career and life (alas the hair blowing, suit wearing and strong stance), alongside her soft feminine side in a 1970’s flower printed chiffon dress with handmade flowers in her hair. Both images have strong messages in themselves and yet they work so well together with a soft tone to finish. Donna-Marie Stark M.NZIPP III (Dist.) Landscape in camera - SILVER DISCTINCTION
Taken on one of my photography expeditions on a Sunday afternoon. Otago Southland has some beautiful scenery and lots of trees, the lungs of our planet. You would think trees are stationary objects but they are far from that. I Love the way they move around in the wind and sound quite scary overhead in a wind creaking and cracking. Am drawn and fascinated by the textures, colours, the mystery that lays beneath the canopy, the amount of wildlife who depend on it for protection/food, their ability to house biological organisms and their most amazing ability to rapidly photosynthesize. It’s great the landscape categories capture trees in so many different ways; it’s no wonder they come with their own CROWNS, rightly so.

Wedding In-Camera - Silver
This image has it’s faults, especially as the outside sun and clouds kept changing the colour palette and was impossible to match. Am not a B&W person, luckily the judges acknowledged the faults and saw the chaos of the day. Simone Jackson M.NZIPP I (Dist.)
