RICHARD WOOD G.M.NZIPP New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year 2017
EXECUTIVE UPDATE
Honours Council Report Kaye Davis, G.M.NZIPP, M.AIPP II, MCGD, Accredited Professional Photographer Shar Devine, F.NZIPP, Accredited Professional Photographer Blair Quax, F.NZIPP I, Accredited Professional Photographer Paul Daly, F.NZIPP, Accredited Professional Photographer Harry Janssen, G.M.NZIPP IV, Accredited Professional Photographer
The annual Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography awards, support and celebrate the delivery of exceptional vision, creativity, and innovation by professional photographers from both New Zealand and overseas. For over thirty years these awards have been brought to national and international professional photographers by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP). The Iris Professional Photography Awards provide a platform where standards are challenged and established to promote value within the profession of photography. It is where the boundaries of photographic vision are pushed and extended. Over three amazing days in June, the NZIPP Honours Council brought together panels of top national and international judges to view and evaluate 1172 entries across thirteen different photographic genres, including Book, Commercial, Creative, Documentary, Illustrative, Landscape, Nature & Wildlife, Portrait, Student, Travel and Wedding categories. Judges were blown away by the standard presented to them. Words and phrases such as: “innovative”, superior level of craftsmanship”, “vision we haven’t seen before”, “different ways of seeing, thinking and expressing that imagination”, “simplicity”, “elegance” and “masterful”, all used to describe a broad range of the imagery seen.

PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP
This year we awarded; 466 Bronze, 197 Silver, 69 Silver with Distinction, 56 Gold and 15 Gold with Distinction awards. A level that truly reflects not just the high standard of entries, but also the raising of standards within the profession as a whole. Overlapping and extending two days beyond the IRIS AWARDS judging, attendees at this year’s event, held in Shed 6 on the Wellington Queens Wharf Waterfront, were spoilt for choice through the EXPOSURE and INFOCUS sessions, that included workshops, trades exhibition / display, photo tours, demonstrations and presentations, prepared and led by key international and national speakers, all running alongside the IRIS AWARDS judging and exhibition. The venue was packed with enthusiasts, professionals, industry suppliers and the general public from around NZ and overseas, all embracing the culture and excitement of everything photographic. The finale to these five incredible days was a super charged gala dinner held at Te Marae, Te Papa. A NZ icon itself, we couldn’t have asked for a more fitting and perfect venue to celebrate the achievements of New Zealand’s top professional photographers. The event was a sell out!
The night wasn’t just about celebrating the category and overall winners, it was also about celebrating the achievements of every entrant, as through entering the IRIS AWARDS entrants have the opportunity to learn and grow both as a photographer and business owner. To the winners on the night a special congratulations go to: Esther Bunning, winner of the CRK sponsored Highest Scoring Print, Sarah Simmons, awarded the James White Memorial Award (presented to a NZIPP member who as a first time entrant achieves the highest aggregate from the top four prints), Australian photographer Kelly Tunney who was awarded the 2017 International Photographer of the Year, with the pinnacle prize, that of 2017 NZ Professional Photographer of the Year, awarded to Hawkes Bay photographer Richard Wood. In addition to the premier photography awards, the NZIPP awarded 12 Associate, 10 Master, 7 Bar to Master, 6 Fellow, 12 Bar to Fellow, 1 Grand Master and 2 Bar to Grand Master distinctions to its NZIPP Accredited Members. Alongside that three institute awards were presented: Mike Langford was awarded as a Life Member, Jackie Ranken as a Honorary Fellow and Tracy Stamatakos received the NZIPP Gold Award for service to the Institute.
Following on from last years success, the 2017 IRIS, EXPOSURE and INFOCUS event highlights the passion, enthusiasm and excitement that exists here in NZ for the profession. This event truly reflected how through collaboration, innovation and determination, between many sectors of the photographic community, the DREAM BIG concept was able to become a reality. For this we owe truckloads of gratitude to all the amazing sponsors, who embraced and supported the DREAM BIG vision - to EPSON NZ, Canon, CR Kennedy, D-Photo, Eizo, Fujifilm, Ilford, Independent Photographic Supplies (IPS), Leica, Momento Pro, Nikon, Olympus, Queensberry - THANK YOU! To all photographers out there, remember that it is only through supporting our own photographic community that we can keep it strong and be supported in return. Please enjoy the pages that follow, in this 2017 Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards Pro Report Special Edition. Celebrate with us and immerse yourself in a visual feast of innovation, creativity and mastery of craft.

NZIPP HONOURS AWARDS
NZIPP Life Member Mike Langford G.M.NZIPP, G.M.AIPP, F.AIPP
Being awarded with the NZIPP Life Membership, is one the greatest achievements within the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography. This is awarded to a NZIPP member who, within a period of at least a twentyyear membership, has actively served and promoted the institute, including serving in elected office within the institute. This year a NZIPP Life Membership was awarded to Mike Langford. Mike has been involved in the photography world for 35 years and throughout this time has been a passionate advocate for what the institute stands for. His contribution to NZIPP at a national level includes Chair of Honours Council from 2004 - 2011, followed by a term as NZIPP President between 2011 and 2014. In 2006 Mike was awarded the distinction of NZIPP Honorary Fellow. His accolades also extend across the Tasman where he has also achieved his Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) Grand Master of Photography as well as being honoured as a Fellow of the AIPP.

PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP

NZIPP HONOURS AWARDS
NZIPP Honorary Fellow Jackie Ranken G.M.NZIPP, G.M.AIPP
The NZIPP Honorary Fellow is the Institute’s highest honour and is awarded sparingly. It is an honour given for outstanding contribution to the image of professional photography within the community at large. This year’s recipient Jackie Ranken can be described as a person who inspires and challenges our perception not just of photography, but of photographic integrity and innovative vision. Jackie has over 35 years’ experience in the photographic world and has judged, both nationally and internationally, for the last 15 years. In 2005 Jackie was awarded her Associate of the NZIPP, earned by achieving merit points through the annual Iris Awards. This was followed by being awarded NZIPP Master of Photography in 2006, Fellow of the NZIPP in 2006 and NZIPP Grand Master of Photography in 2012. Jackie was also the first person to have achieved a Bar to Grand Master, which she did in 2016. In addition to achieving these accolades in New Zealand, Jackie also holds the title of Grand Master of Photography with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.
Jackie learnt and developed her craft by working as a darkroom technician, freelance and sports photographer, wedding photographer, commercial photographer and photojournalist. Her contribution to the NZIPP and photography is unquantifiable, both as an educator and practicing photographic artist; sharing her knowledge calmly, quietly, generously and without the need of reciprocal expectation. An intelligent visual creator and an extremely hard worker, Jackie lives and breathes photography. She is also an internationally recognised and highly respected photographer, who has set the bar to which all of us strive to aspire to achieve. We congratulate Jackie on this year becoming an Honorary Fellow of the NZIPP.

NZIPP HONOURS AWARDS
NZIPP Gold Award Tracy Stamatakos F.NZIPP
The NZIPP Gold Award is an honour awarded to a NZIPP member who has given outstanding service to the Institute and its members. Such a person has usually given long, unselfish service at a national level and this has had an effect for the good of the Institute. This year the NZIPP Gold Award was presented to Tracy Stamatakos. Tracy is a highly valued member of the NZIPP not only at regional level but also National level where she has already served several years on the Board. Prior to joining the Board Tracy also spent numerous years on her Regional Committee as well as Regional Chair, bringing an unparalleled vibrancy to her local photographic community.
Tracy is an inspiring, caring, giving, humble, positive, refined and clever photographer, also known for her wicked sense of humour. Along with being a successful photographer, Tracy is a beloved wife and awesome mum of two teenagers. Always, first and foremost, she is an advocate dedicated to the NZIPP cause, spreading word on the inspirational world of photography with a contagious effect. Our institute will be forever grateful for Tracy’s drive and energy, both regionally and nationally. Tracy truly is an advocate dedicated to the NZIPP philosophy, the photographic community and human spirit.
