So how are your Iris Awards entries coming along?! Mine are still a Folder of Possibilities at this stage, but they’re gradually being whittled down and I’m enjoying dipping in there every now and then and re-editing older work to see what I can bring out of it.

I loved Richard Wood’s recent Zoom presentation about what entering photography awards does for his creativity, and how much it has pushed him to improve. In my early NZIPP days I used to look at rock stars like Richard, Jackie Ranken and Tony Carter (NZ Photographer of the Year six times now!), and wonder why they kept entering the Iris Awards. Surely everyone already knew they were utterly amazing?

I was missing the point entirely. What I hadn’t clocked was that while of course the awards are a competition, they’re not just a competition against others. They are an excellent benchmark if you want to get an idea of where your skill level sits, they are a fantastic marketing tool and it is indisputably gratifying to earn the recognition of your peers. But they’re also a competition with yourself, and that doesn’t change no matter how high up the photographic ladder you are. We all share a passion for photography, and we all want to keep learning. Richard said in his talk: “I have a fear that if I stop entering, I’ll stop growing,” and I can really relate to that.

Richard also said that he had no interest in entering older work, partly because when he looks back at it he sees its faults clearly (a sure sign that his drive to keep improving is working), but also because for him, the awards are all about growth and looking forward.

I respect that, but am the first to admit that this year, I’m going backwards. And it’s not a bad thing - it’s quite fun really.

I was really excited by the Honours Council’s move this year to waive the normal Iris Awards rule that photographic content can’t be more than two years old. Covid 19 and the move to online awards for 2020 has brought other waivers as well, and for the first time

there is no limit on how many images can be entered. It couldn’t have come at a better time for me personally. Becoming President of the NZIPP was already quite a big move, and then there was the matter of a global pandemic to deal with, as well as my own business to (try to) maintain… time for personal photographic projects has been limited. And the bulk of my client work at present is headshots - they’re hardly Iris material.

I have actually made time for a couple of personal shoots aimed at producing something Iris-worthy, and I’ve had such a good time. As in previous years, I find myself thinking: “This is so great! I should do more of this - I shouldn’t need Iris to light a fire under me.” And then… I need Iris to light a fire under me. But I haven’t got a lot of new work to enter this year. Instead, I’m enjoying going back through my folders to try to find hidden gems. You do see things differently once some time has passed, and sometimes I’m surprised by which ones I marked at the time as my selections.

There are also several I would have loved to enter at the time, but I had to make some hard calls because there were limits on entry numbers, and I chose a different image. Haven’t we all done that? And then when it didn’t do well, thought “if only…” Those discarded ones were then too old to enter, but now they’re suddenly eligible again! I’m not holding my breath that they’re going to do brilliantly, but at only $25 an entry this year, it’s worth a shot. Of course only an entrant’s top 10 scoring prints earn distinction points, but I love that the judging systems is going to do that sorting for me this year, and I don’t need to kick myself about choosing the wrong images.

So for someone who hasn’t shot much new personal work, I am going to enter a lot of images this year. I encourage you also to take advantage of the silver linings that Covid-19 has brought. It has never been easier or cheaper to enter the Iris Awards. It’s not too late to shoot new work, but if you can’t fit that in, and you’re feeling like you don’t have anything to enter, enjoy taking a look back through your hard drives! You never know what diamonds (or gold) you’ll find.

The countdown is well and truly on for the 2020 Nikon Iris Professional Photography Awards.

With it being a tumultuous year so far for everyone, we are really excited to still be bringing you this year’s awards, albeit online.

Why enter? This is an age old question, but read the following and decide for yourself what value entering the awards may bring for you.

Entering the awards will undoubtedly push you out of your comfort zone, but that’s a good thing, right? The awards are a fantastic opportunity to give you direction and strive to do better, in order to improve and hone your creative and technical skills, in both your photographic specialties and through testing the waters in other genres.

The good thing is that the judging is all anonymous. So, if you don’t achieve your goal of receiving an award, only you will know. But what an incredible opportunity the awards are to experiment, learn and grow in your work. If you don’t win an award this year there’s a very high chance you will have learned a great deal from the experience and achieve that goal next time.

It’s a wonderful chance for getting feedback on your work, and listening to the feedback on other entries, from some of the best in the profession, is invaluable. Your friends, family and clients all love your work, but how does it stack up in a peer-reviewed process? Entering, and listening to the live-streamed judging, is educational and inspirational. It’s a process that helps with your ability to critique and review your own work more objectively in order to continue to improve your photography.

So you win an award! Winning an award can provide a real, and at times much needed, boost to realising your worth as a photographer. It can also go a long way to support growing your business and the market you establish yourself in. Don’t underestimate the benefits that may come from being recognised as an award-winning photographer, both through personal satisfaction and in your business.

Be inspired by and learn from the best! The awards are where you will see people’s BEST work. Where they challenge their own thought processes, creativity and techniques.

Entering and tuning into the judging is a fantastic opportunity to get inspired, see how others interpret subject matter, and learn about other people’s ideas, approaches, techniques, and style.

In Person Sales Words by Michelle Fey M.NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer

Michelle Fey is an NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer, based in Napier. Michelle is knocking it out the park with sales in her business, so we asked her a few questions to find out how she does it.

A bit of background.... I started as a Forensic Photographer for the NZ Police in 2000 in Auckland. I had 2 weeks on the job training and then I was on my own. I then received further training, painting by light a couple of months later and was on-call.

Pretty much anything you can think of I have photographed - suicide, homicide, fatal crashes and fires, aggravated robberies, prisoners, assault victims and the list goes on. In 2005 we moved to Napier and I returned to Policing but was only working in Forensic photography on a relieving basis, BUT they were kind enough to put me on call once every 3 weeks…

Moving to mainstream photography... Around 2012, I started photographing weddings under the Eva Bradley brand. It suited me at the time, I was still part-time in the Police with 2 small children. In 2013 I left the Police after 17.5 years, and once the wedding season had finished early 2014 I thought I would give newborn photography a try…. and I loved it! When I began, I was doing shoot and burn as I honed my skills. I then started showing reveal walls a few years ago - I printed the client images from their session at 5x7.5 size and matted them in 11x14 frames, and put those on the wall in my sales area for my client to view when they came in to view their images. I did this for a few years, and then got some coaching with a couple of different people, Mark Rossetto for business and Johl Dunn for mind-set. It was then I switched to In-Person Sales, and after I had completed my mind-set coaching things really took off!

Why did it take you so long to make the switch to InPerson Sales? I had limiting beliefs and mental blocks, thinking I was not good enough and nobody would spend that much on artwork. And actually they will - you are the only person stopping it from happening. I have heard other photographers saying they don’t have time, or their clients are too busy to come back a second time. They are just limiting beliefs, it is all about education of your clients, and not everyone will be your client.

How do you know what products to sell? You just have to sell what you love and then you will attract clients that love the same things. It is scary, and okay to start small but you also have to put your big girl/ boy pants on and just get s*** done.

I sell wall art, then keepsake boxes and then albums. It really depends on what my clients love. I am about to bring in a few more things too but they will be priced similarly to what I have now, so it is not confusing to my clients. Wall art is printed and framed locally by Chris at Edges Art and Framing, Keepsake boxes and matts are from Global Imaging in Australia and my albums are done by Queensberry.

What is your process for In-Person Sales? I normally do a pre-shoot consult at my studio so they can see the artwork and we can chat about what they love and want in their home. My prices are on my walls and very easy to see so they get the idea right from the start of the price, that way no-one wastes any time; if I don’t fit into their budget then they don’t have to book. And explaining what a 7x10 image matted in an 11x14 matt is, is much easier just to show someone, and they get to know you and build up trust and see that you are actually a business not a website.

I show my clients a slideshow twice, then we chat about what they love and what they want on the wall/keepsake box or album. We go through the images and choose their favourites and we work out what they want. Then we add it up and I ask, how would you like to pay for that? Eftpos/Visa/electronic banking or Payright (not back online in NZ just yet)

How do you know what to charge? I am always changing my pricelist at the moment to ensure it works for me. And I am the first one to say I am still learning and trying to make it the best for my clients. I also come from a place of serving my clients and then the © Tracey Scottto financial rewards do come. I do not need to ‘hard sell’ my clients.

Knowing what to charge is always hard, you have to ensure you are covering your costs and making money at the same time. You also have to be covering your insurance, gear, rent, vehicle, etc. Even if you start small and then grow your collection. Keep it simple - a confused mind will say no, and won’t buy.

So once we have talked about the products and prices, © Tracey Scott I check if they still want to go ahead and book, I email all the necessary information to them and book them in, then they come back for the shoot.

When the shoot is finished we book in a time the following week for the viewing. I select the best 30 images (a few more for family and cake smashes), do a very basic edit in Lightroom, drop it into Fundy and prep for the viewing.

SEPTEMBER 2020 NZIPP OTAGO/ SOUTHLAND - EVERYDAY PRINTING TO FINE ART WORKSHOP WITH RACHAEL SMITH Date: Monday 21 September 2020, 1pm - 5pm Location: 222 Photographic Studios, The Hilton, Queenstown • Do you frequently have to make a “guesstimate” about how the colour, tone and density of your on-screen image will look on paper? • Do you find that you spend far too much time at your screen and too much money making prints that don’t look like you envisioned, simply to end up in the bin? • Would you like to try new paper stocks and get a perfect result on your first print? Well, now is your chance! In this workshop we will cover the following topics: - Supplies, keeping stock - Let’s talk about paper - Making your own print media - Reading icc profiles - Out of gamut colours - Edit to print, sharpening, pop, soft proofing - Creating custom print profiles - Custom print presets in Photoshop - Hands on, print your own image to take home. In Rachael’s words - I have a very curious nature, which means I am constantly open to learning. I’m an Ilford Master, Sony Digital Imaging Advocate, current member of the NZIPP Board and NZIPP Master of Photography I. I am a practicing artist, and also a student, having just started the second year of my Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Art. I’ve always worked with digital cameras, but I am a strong advocate of the printed image. I believe images need to be printed to close the circle from concept to capture, through to completion. The tangibility of a print is integral in my art practice. I find the range of print media available really exciting and love testing out new products. Printing your own work can be useful during the image creation process as well as for delivering a completed work. Printing for yourself gives you complete control of the finished image, from the immense range of media options, to the thrill of watching the image come to life as a ‘real’ object.
