LIFE

THE LANDFILL DOGS WORDS: STACEY WEGER | PHOTOS: SHANNON JOHNSTONE “There is sadness below the surface. It seeps out through the methane pipes. The sadness smells like sulfur – a sharp juxtaposition to the beauty this place holds.”

10

The place Shannon Johnstone describes is Raleigh’s Landfill Park. For several years, Johnstone has been using this location as a backdrop for her photography project, Landfill Dogs. While Johnstone’s photos are gorgeous, detailed, and vivid, the purpose is not just for arts sake. It’s about saving lives. The dogs she highlights are at a high risk of being euthanized. The photos offer an opportunity for potential adopters to see them at their best and happiest. It also gives the dogs a chance to run and play, socialize, and breathe fresh air. It gives them freedom, even if fleeting.

The fact that the county disposed of its waste and shelter animals in the same manner really struck Johnstone. “It occurred to me that this government structure reflected that homeless animals are just another waste stream. I wanted to shed light on that.” The light she shed shone bright enough to attract national attention – the project was featured on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. Thus, what began as an 18 month project is still going strong. The Landfill Dogs Facebook page has nearly 35,000 followers, and Johnstone posts new photos on a regular basis.

But the stark reality is never far from mind, considering that Landfill Park is where Wake County buried its euthanized animals for 14 years. Johnstone says there are over 25,000 dogs buried there. “Almost 700 tons of dog is buried in this hill among 4.8 million tons of trash,” she says. “I think of Landfill Park as a burial ground.”

While the setting may be grim in theory, she says it is quite beautiful, full of green grass and wildflowers, nature and wildlife. She reminds us that “this project is not about the dogs who have died. This project is about the dogs who are still living and are most at risk.” The sadness

“IT’S ABOUT SAVING LIVES. ”

and beauty she sees in Landfill Park is parallel to what she sees in her Landfill Dogs. “I want to present their spirits as alive, happy, and running free. I want to give them one more chance to find a home before they end up buried in a landfill with our broken dishwashers. I want to make something beautiful from the sadness in the dogs’ eyes.” She has more than exceeded this goal with her photo series. And the results are in the numbers. Of the 140 featured dogs, 120 have been adopted or sent to rescue. Another 8 are still available, and 12 have been put down. That part is

14

difficult, Johnstone admits. “It is hard for me to look them in the eye, and watch them frolic and make some gesture that is all their own and not fall in love with them.” She is already one dog over her “three dog family” limit, and she and her husband have agreed no more. Euthanasia is the reality we have to live with, though she is quick to point out this is due to the rules made by elected officials and shelters aren’t to blame. In fact, she commends the dedicated staff and volunteers for their efforts. They make Landfill Dogs possible.

Johnstone contends that her project is really about freedom: the brief respite she offers the dogs from their confinement. “I want to feel free with them, to dream with them at the top of the hill, to look out at our country, and make a wish,” she says. “I want to participate in the feeling of being free, even if only for an hour.”

Though the project no longer has a definitive end date, Johnstone hopes others will follow suit. “My dream is that it would inspire others to do similar projects that advocate for the most overlooked animals in their own communities. I would love to see a Landfill Dogs movement across the country.”

This is a photo of Jemma who is still in need of a home. For more information about how you can help visit LandfillDogs.info.

GABE ENG-GOETZ

REPS DURM WORDS: HEATHER LEAH | PHOTOS: GABE ENG-GOETZ

Like a many-headed hydra, the Triangle is a strange blend of neighboring cities with very different personalities. Known for his wildly popular--sometimes controversial--art and fashion label, Gabe Eng-Goetz doesn’t shy away from the darker side of city stereotypes. In fact, he wears them on his sleeve.

stoned. Chapel Hill is a pair of Sperry’s that have never seen a boat deck.”

Triangle locals have likely seen EngGoetz’ work scrawled across his Runaway brand clothing. With slogans like “DURM: Say It Like You’re From Here,” “Durham OG,” and “Black Wall Street,” he fully embraces his Durham heritage.

This staunch honesty, coupled with the ability to laugh at each city’s unique cultural stereotypes, has enormous popularity on the streets of “DURM.”

“I’d like to relate the Triangle to shoes,” he responds, when asked to candidly speak about city stereotypes. “Cary is the pair of all-white Sketchers ShapeUps your aunt wears to Jazzercize. Durham is the mint-condition Fila sneakers you found at Goodwill while

18

And what does he think of Raleigh? “Raleigh is a pair of bootleg Louboutins you got in Chinatown while back home for the holidays.”

Eng-Goetz explains, “RUNNING FROM “A lot changed for CONVENTION me once I coined the word ‘DURM’ IN SEARCH OF back in 2012. It’s a TRUTH” local pronunciation of Durham. I first put it on hats and the response was good, so I ran with it.” Since then, his clothing label has spun through four years of success. His

any angle, his art is shifting the way the Triangle perceives itself.

“What started as an artistic experiment back in 2011 has grown into a focused lifestyle brand,” he says. “The name Runaway comes from the idea of running from convention in search of truth.”

“Each city has it’s own flavor, and I love that about the Triangle. Crazy to think in 50 years it will have melded into one massive metropolis.”

Born and raised in Durham, Eng-Goetz attributes many of his quirks and creative inspirations to Durham culture. In fact, after spending his college years in New York, he became more determined to develop his hometown’s music and arts scene. “Instead of leaving and taking my talents to South Beach, I stuck around and made movies with other like-minded artists in an effort to create our own unique scene right here in Durham,” he shares. “This is my way of giving back to the city that made me.” Eng-Goetz’ edgy designs have impacted more than just the local fashion world. His art bleeds over into the music scene, as well, where he inks and illustrates album covers for rock bands. From

What will that future look like? Maybe he can draw it for us.

CLARK AFLAGUE

THE LEATHER MAN WORDS: SABRINA GALLI | PHOTOS: GUILLERMO QUETZALCOATL

In a pair of custom made leather boots, each print and stitch is purposefully and strategically hand crafted. Each intricate detail is determined with precision. The process creates something extraordinarily out of the ordinary— eliciting beauty in every step and not just the final product. In this light, Clark Aflague’s story mirrors his work. His life has been nothing short of extraordinary as a shop owner, past Naval school director, and the kind of world traveler my passport dreams about. The Reno native joined the military when he was 19 years old as part of the Naval Construction Battalions. With the Seabees, he spent a year working as a welder and volunteer firefighter in Antarctica. Yes, Antarctica. He made his time there count—working with new groups of people every day. “They had stargazers tracking satellites and the New Zealanders had a small base there;

I helped out with a dog sled team, we had divers, a biolab, and geologists studying the ice. I dabbled into leather as I was there and kept trying to hone my craft in some sort of way.” After retiring from the service, this trade stuck with him above all the others. Most of his work was sold on Etsy and eBay before he recently decided to open Cimarron Leather Studio in Raleigh last February. His friends were using the same forums without any “A TRIBUTE TO physical space for their art and so the CRAFTSMANSHIP.” shop was created. The studio is awash with collaboration and is a tribute to craftsmanship. Everything has been made, reused, or transformed by an artist—from the custom-made boots to the oak shelves that held them. Even pieces of pieces, like the clasp of a bag, have had their

27

own travels and stories. Clark told me about a customer who recently came in asking him to recreate the belt of his grandfather, and he managed to do so using the original buckle. With about 80% of his work being custom-made instead of off the shelf, the results have both sentimental and aesthetic value.

Home” is what it says on the door. In the lavender colored shop on the corner of North Bloodworth and Lane, you’ll step into a different kind of Raleigh culture. You’ll see work that has been brought in from all over the country, put together by those who are ready and willing to share their own artistic influences with our city.

Cimarron Leather Studio opens at 12—“High Noon until the Cows Come

The Cimarron Leather Studio can be found at 222 N Bloodworth St, Raleigh, NC 27601. Give them a call at 919.757.4150 or visit the website at CimarronLeatherRaleigh.com.

DASAN AHANU

TALL AMBITION WORDS: GEMYNII | PHOTO: G. LLOYD PHOTOGRAPHY

Standing at 6’7”, it is hard for anyone not to notice Dasan Ahanu walk into a room. However, it is more than his height than that will hold the attention of those around him. For quite a number of years, he has been the face of spoken word poetry for the Triangle. Across the state, as well as across the country, people have been captivated by his clever use of metaphors, his unforgettable delivery, and amazing lyricism. “MANY PEOPLE IN Many would THIS COMMUNITY describe him as TURN TO THIS a modern day Gil Scott Heron or CONTEMPORARY Hughes RENAISSANCE MAN Langston mixed with FOR HIS CREATIVE conscious hip-hip and impeccable LEADERSHIP.” taste in footwear. When asked to describe himself, Ahanu stated that he is a “melting pot of intelligence, Hip Hop, southerness, and weirdness”, which he strongly embraces.

Many people in this community turn to this contemporary Renaissance man for his creative leadership. On any given day you can find him somewhere between teaching at a local university, recording music, coaching both basketball and poetry slam teams, organizing, play writing, facilitating workshops, mentoring, performing, traveling, and hosting events. Yet between everything he has on his plate, Dasan found the time to write and collect pieces to be a part of his newly released spoken word album entitled “Last Temptation Before Sunrise: the prologue”. Fans of this nationally ranked poet have been long awaiting this album since the release of his last project in back 2012. August will begin a new journey the life of poet because Dasan was recently announced as the 2015-2016 Nasir Jones Fellow at the Hip Hop Archive at Harvard University. For nine months he will be researching lyricism in Hip Hop. For the first time a long time,

35

Dasan will be stepping back from his many creative roles in the community to focus on personal academics and artistic endeavors. With this, he plans to continue to build his poetry collection by recording a follow up to his current

spoken word CD which will be heavily inspired by this academic transition. “I am excited because I will in a place for the first time when can clearly see what’s next with my art”

ANDREW SARTORI

WIELD FIRE. BEND GLASS. WORDS: ANFERNEE AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO Most people know what a glass pipe is. Few know that there is a thriving and vibrant community of artists who are crafting beautiful glass sculpture pipes making upwards of $200k a year fueling a billion dollar industry globally while developing the most fascinating subculture of art since the graffiti movement in the 1970s.

38

Raleigh artist Andrew Sartori is one of these glass sculptors who majestically wields fire and bends glass. He opened the door and let us in on the inner workings of this burgeoning subculture. “This is a relatively new art form but the scene is growing. Twenty years ago there were maybe a few hundred glass blowers. Now there are thousands.”

under his wing. “I would come out to his house a few times a week and he would show me the basics. I fell in love with the art quickly.” Soon Andrew would be working his first gig with Zephyr Glass doing mostly prep work while trading services for shop space. Any spare time he could find was spent researching the craft. “I would read books, watch videos and scan the internet for as much information as I could consume on the art.” One of Zephyr’s distributors, Joint Forces, took notice of Andrew’s work and began selling some of his pieces across their network. As money came in Andrew invested it right back into his craft allowing him to improve, grow quickly and set up a studio in Raleigh within Capital Smoke on Martin Street.

Mentorship is a critical pillar within many of the recent art subculture booms including graffiti art and tattooing. The glass piping art culture is no different. Andrew got his start by apprenticing with a friend who took him

While Andrew presently distributes across the United States he tells us that some artists have reached counter culture celebrity status. Many have become household names amongst fans of the art. Names like Snodgrass,

39

40

41

Banjo, Germ and el Hefe may mean nothing to the layperson but are legends in this community. While the art form is growing fast and the subculture is finding stronger footing in the marketplace Andrew is quick to note that the glass pipe art form carries a notable stigma. “This used to be illegal. The government went after glass blowers through the early 90’s so artists began creating nom de plumes and pen names to hide their true identity.” Even though the legal pressures have relented identifying your work through a different name within the culture still exists. The most popular artists in the game today are known simply by names like Salt, Snic and Bandhu. Andrew goes by Logi which means “the personification of fire”. Again, the similarities regarding

pen names and the graffiti scene are noteworthy. I continue to draw parallels with the graffiti subculture because I have an affection for authentically Americanborn art forms that grow organically and are self-driven purely by creative competition. As the glass blowing subculture continues to grow and explore notoriety through channels like magazines, websites and national expos it will be fascinating to observe how an art once perceived only as the work of degenerates merges into the lane of the modern art gallery. Truth-be-told glass blowing is a craft that takes just as much commitment as any other highgrade method of creative expression. Years of practice and hefty investment are required to make a mark. Just ask Andrew Sartori. He is clearly making his right here in Oak City.

Stop by Capital Smoke on 215 W Martin St, and check out more work from Andrew’s Sartori. Follow Andrew on Instagram @logi_glass_art. In addition you can follow other local glass blowers including @ sirwalterdabbinhamer (Sherlock’s Glass Gallery), @chipglass, @hefeglass and @nasteeglass.

LIFE

OAK CITY

ASCENDING

WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTO: JOE BRUNO I went through something of a SimCity phase. SimCity is a world-building video game in which the player is tasked with founding and developing a simulated cityscape. There’s something very comforting about the omnipotence of governing raw resources and forcing a thriving metropolis to emerge where virtual squirrels once frolicked in Arcadian meadows. Of course, it’s all based on algorithms put down in 1s and 0s by some guy with poor social skills in the Silicon Valley. The growth of Raleigh, too, is based on some deeper logic involving global commerce, transfer of goods and services, capital markets, and angry people with lots of paper yelling in rooms filled with scrolling digits. The result is all around us. Everywhere one looks, steel skeletons swarming with hardhats ascend. Highways squeeze and widen. Discarded houses resurrect, enduring nail gun surgery. Startups and new shops vie for a slice of the pie. Romantic reconstruction-era mansions mingle with sleek, modern condominiums.

Raleigh, North Carolina is the recipient of the nation’s white-collar refugees. The dying industrial north and the thirsty cities of the southwest have somehow come to view the Oak City acorn as some sort of beacon. Some here embrace the opportunity change brings. Others bitterly resist, detecting something lost along the way. The question is whether Raleigh can grow and still maintain her soul. The answer depends on whether you believe the spirit of a place resides in her buildings and traffic cones, or whether the soul dwells in the people who call that place home. Each of us defines what it means to be a Raleigh-ite? A Raleigher? Good golly, I’m from Raleigh? What the hell do we call ourselves, anyway? No matter, we’ll figure it out. Barring the internet breaking (thanks, China) or asteroid strike (an option on SimCity), the region will continue developing for the foreseeable future. So, we must decide whether to contend with this shift or to adapt, allowing the growth of Raleigh to mirror the growth in ourselves. Granted, it’s an old and fairly simple idea. But at least we get a daily reminder in drywall and girders.
