HOPSCOTCH HUSTLER

greg LOWENHAGEN WORDS: HEATHER LEAH | PHOTOS: BRYAN REGAN

When Greg Lowenhagen produced the first Hopscotch Music Festival back in 2010, he did more than send shockwaves of music across Raleigh. In the span of a weekend, Hopscotch helped shift our city’s self-image and push the boundaries of our urbanization and growth. Make no mistake: This is not the Raleigh you grew up in. Within the past decade, there’s been a burgeoning emphasis in developing large-scale downtown festivals and supporting local businesses that create the personality and unique flavor of the Oak City. But Lowenhagen wasn’t initially looking to shake Raleigh’s roots. He just really wanted to go to a music festival — so he created his own. “I was looking for a bigger set of live shows or a festival to put on my calendar and look forward to,” he explains.

12

“I’d never booked a show before, I’d only been to a lot of them, which isn’t really the same,” Lowenhagen recalls. His make-it-happen attitude impressed Grayson Currin, the Independent Weekly “I’d never (now, INDY Week) booked a show music editor, and Steve Schewel, the before, I’d INDY’s founder, who only been to a helped Lowenhagen lot of them” start Hopscotch. Raleigh, he discovered, shared his desire for an eclectic downtown music festival. “I think we were most blown away by the reception and the feeling downtown during the weekend,” Lowenhagen says, describing the initial reaction. “The fans who came in 2010 — many of whom continue to come today — created the identity of the festival.” A mere six years later, Hopscotch has become a fixture in downtown Raleigh’s buzzing September lineup of art and

13

14

15

music festivals. Its diverse multiplex of music genres and local venues brings every generation of Raleighite together. “We have an uncommon opportunity in Raleigh to learn from what other cities have done for decades and create our own future,” Lowenhagen observes. He acknowledges, however, the Oak City is experiencing growing pains as our downtown culture expands. “Cities are lively places with lots of people, and that variety of lifestyles makes them special. Raleigh isn’t going through anything particularly unique — cities have boomed or busted for a long time. It’s just happening here now, so the challenges are new and different, and close to home.”

“It’s a cool time to be here, and important one too,” he adds. Just as he turned his vision for a largescale music festival into a reality, he believes Raleighites “will continue to dream up ideas for making it a more interesting place to live and hang out.” Lowenhagen shares, “Probably like many people, I can remember most moments in my life as they relate to the music I was listening to at the time.” By creating our whole city’s soundtrack for one weekend each year, Hopscotch is imprinting on Raleigh’s memories. And when we go dance and sing along, we’re doing more than just supporting local arts and businesses; we’re building our city’s identity.

MUSIC

no love

for NC PUNK WORDS: JT MOORE | PHOTOS: GUILLERMO DELGADO

Some punks are brash. Some punks are not. Some punks are individualists. Some punks are not. Some punks, like Raleigh-based No Love are instead a modern-day offshoot of the protopunk stereotype often associated with the music’s genre. While their music keeps with the usual high-energy, power-chord traditions, No Love incorporates a cleaner, more refined technical sound that leapfrogs some of punk’s DIY history. But in a genre where a band’s image, lifestyle and legacy often overshadow the music, that’s where No Love’s similarity to their punk predecessors ends.

20

While punk is often associated with anti-establishment individualism, it’s refreshing to see a band like No Love with such a strong sense of community.

“Some punks are individualists. Some punks are not.”

“The way I see it, shows are how punks hang out,” says No Love’s lead singer, Elizabeth Lynch. “You go see some bands, meet people who have similar interests/views/self-esteem issues, and bam, you’re friends. When I go to a show half the fun is seeing all my friends and enjoying music with them.” However, a lack of places to book punk shows makes building and growing that community a challenge. Lynch explains, “There aren’t a lot of

21

places to see shows that aren’t bars, so it’s a little hard to book all ages shows and I feel that’s important to the punk community to be all inclusive, especially to younger people since they’re pretty much the future of the scene.” But that doesn’t keep No Love from trying. No Love’s guitarist, Daniel Lupton, for instance, owns and operates Sorry State Records, a local independent record label whose brick-and-mortar record store on Morgan Street will celebrate its two-year anniversary in October. Having originally started in a spare room at his house, Daniel and Sorry State Records press, release, promote and sell a collection of records (online and in-store) that have made them one of the most well-curated punk rock distributors in the world, and undoubtedly, the center of the Triangle’s punk scene. Lupton dreams of someday expanding the Sorry State Records physical location into a place to hang out and talk about records, upcoming shows and even hear live music. But in the meantime, you can see No Love, along with a number of other NC punk bands, at Slim’s on Friday night during Hopscotch Music Festival. No Love will take the stage at 11 p.m.

Stay connected with No Love at noloveraleigh.bandcamp.com and see them Friday, Sept. 11 at Slim’s during Hopscotch. Visit Sorry State Records at sorrystaterecords.com.

THE COORDINATED TALENT OF

Ashley Melzer WORDS: SABRINA GALLI | PHOTOS: SEANO

In improv theatre, there’s a “yes rule.” Every idea must be treated as if it were a great idea, and you have to always say yes. And by doing so, you learn to support and collaborate with other artists so that as a team, you help each other grow together. This rule is a way of life for Ashley Melzer, the talent coordinator for Hopscotch Music Festival. She began doing improv in 2010 while struggling to perfect a screenplay. By this time, she’d completed film school at the University of Southern California and graduated from the folklore graduate program at UNC-Chapel Hill. Feeling weighed down by the screenplay, she decided to take a class at DSI Comedy Theater. And after adopting that “yes” mentality, it wasn’t surprising

26

when one class turned into a whole set of classes, and she became a company member within a matter of months. Now, Melzer performs on Friday nights at “because 10 p.m. with Mister Diplomat and is the improv, in associate art director a really for the theater.

positive way, is all about failure.”

She attributes her next adventure — one that will take her across the pond to film a documentary about stone wall masonry in Wales — to the personal growth she’s gained from her work in improv. She says, “Me five years ago would be terrified to make this project that I don’t have scripts for or a beat sheet for, but because i’m an improviser and know better how to recognize something when it’s

27

happening, I think I’m better prepared to be out in the field.” As the talent coordinator for Hopscotch, Melzer works directly with the bands throughout the weekend. She calls herself the “happy information giver,” the one who provides the bands with all of the connections around Raleigh. These bands don’t realize, however,

that Ashley has an entire set of her own talents. This artist is a writer, photographer, filmmaker, comedian and teacher. And what exactly draws her to improv? She says, “because improv, in a really positive way, is all about failure.” This concept, combined with the “yes rule,” can change your entire outlook on life.

Check out DSIComedy.com for your next chance to see Ashley on stage. Visit AWallersLife.com for more information on the film. Infrequently shared silly jokes and articles are always available @ashleymelzer on Twitter.

WILL GOODYEAR WORDS: STACEY WEGER | PHOTO: SPCLGST

This September is a milestone for Will Goodyear. It will be his fifth year as venue manager for Hopscotch Music Festival. Brought on board by Hopscotch showrunners Greg Lowenhagen and Grayson Currin, Goodyear’s role has evolved over the years. “I coordinate between artists, venues, instrument rental companies, sound personnel and other Hopscotch staff to make sure all of our shows run smoothly,” he says.

imagine my job would be very difficult for someone not already involved in local music.” What does make his job easier is the cooperation and work that Raleigh’s music venues put into the festival. Goodyear acknowledges, “This festival wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the venues.

Goodyear is steeped in the Raleigh music scene — as frontman for local metal band, Grohg, he has performed on stage at many of the Hopscotch venues, which gives him a “frontman for unique advantage in his role. “Playing local metal definitely band, Grohg” locally helps in that respect. My role with Hopscotch strengthens those relationships and opens doors. I

33

Hopscotch tries to make their jobs a little easier, but they’re still the ones hosting four bands a night for three nights (not even including day parties) and making it look easy.” Pulling off a three-day festival without a hitch is challenging, but not without benefits. Goodyear not only gets an

up-close and personal view of the inner workings of a successful music event, he also gets to enjoy being part of the audience. “My favorite part of Hopscotch is watching whatever Saturday night headliner I’ve chosen to end my weekend with,” he says. “I don’t get to watch many shows since I’m constantly bouncing around the whole venue grid, but once the final set of headliners is on stage I can relax and become a fan.” Godflesh, he says, “is my light at the end of this year’s tunnel.” Even though it consumes much of his life, Goodyear doesn’t focus all his energy on music — he’s also an accomplished painter. Many of his mixed media pieces depict decaying urban landscapes. Of his art, he adds, “the decomposed architecture represent the temporary, fragile nature of our culture’s current values. In the long run, our corporately branded skyscrapers will age to the point of instability and be replaced with the next generation’s icons.” Interpreting this cycle, he says, is interesting to deal with artistically. His artwork can be viewed online at www.willgoodyear. net. donna orr

Main Stage Style WORDS: CAITLIN RUSSELL | PHOTOs: SPCLGST “The horrible rain year. When was that? The year with The Roots.” Donna Orr, co-owner of the eclectic style shop, Dear Hearts, in Durham and City Plaza main stage manager for Hopscotch Music Festival, is quick to recall her worst Hopscotch experience. But other than that year, she says, working at Hopscotch has been a tiring, exhausting, but worthwhile and relatively smooth adventure — she’s not even had any crazy antics from acts like The Flaming Lips and A-Trak. (“They’re all pros with pro crews,” she adds.)

“sounds a little extreme when you say it out loud, but hey, it’s the truth”

Making her way to North Carolina from Los Angeles, Orr attended the inaugural year of the now established Hopscotch and fell

in love. She says, “When I heard the festival was looking for some people to fill a few open roles, I sent in my resume and met with Greg [Lowenhagen].... and I’ve been manager for the City Plaza stage ever since.” But it wasn’t such an easy decision. A decade-plus veteran of the music industry, she found herself a bit jaded with the festival scene, but in attending Hopscotch that first year something changed — something that led to a cross-country move, a new city, a new scene and a new job. She adds “[that] sounds a little extreme when you say it out loud, but hey, it’s the truth.” In North Carolina, however, she found more than just a festival; she found a community willing to embrace the type of business she’d always dreamed of creating, but never had the right place in which to do it. In L.A., it just wasn’t

39

feasible — from the type of people to the expense of storefronts, it wouldn’t work. But her dream of “opening a place where you come in and don’t just shop, you get to know the people running it” finally found a home, Dear Hearts — a vintage, local, inspired and extremely personal style destination in Durham. While Orr and her business partner are soon closing the storefront to focus more on the online and music styling side of the business, they’re certainly not slowing down. They’ve recently worked with Bon Iver’s Justin

Vernon and Eaux Claires in Wisconsin as stylists for the festival. They work with long-time friends Sylvan Esso, who played Dear Hearts grand opening, on everything from styling for photoshoots to tour items. So with a blending of style and music experience, Orr has found a job no one else really has. “I didn’t even realize it was a job,” she says. And she hopes to add three or four festival stylings a year to her efforts, while staying true to her roots — building relationships with artists and the community to be the bridge between music and style.

GETTING THE JOB DONE w/ Taylor McAdams & Crew WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTOs: SPCLGST Flash your wristband and pass through the barricades. You’re on Taylor McAdams’ turf now. McAdams has volunteered for Raleigh’s Hopscotch Music Festival since its inception in 2010. For the past four years, he’s been responsible for overseeing the threeday event’s main stage in City Plaza on Fayetteville Street. The months and weeks leading up to the annual lineup of bands, when organizers scramble to prepare the event, are quiet for McAdams. His job doesn’t begin until the stage is assembled. Only then does his real work begin. “I have no experience doing this,” he explains. “My background is really just in backbreaking work and having a hard work ethic.” With a small crew of hand-picked volunteers, Taylor prepares the main stage for the handful of bands who will perform upon it, as well as for the headliner act which, in years past, has

included the likes of Public Enemy, The Breeders and The Flaming Lips. The Hopscotch crew make sure instruments and equipment arrive, stock the backstage and juggle the myriad surprises that come with a production of this size. Yet, the main stage is only the nexus for the volunteers’ wider duty of overseeing the entire blocked off area. For three days McAdams and crew constantly rush to assist vendors and schedule deliveries. No one works fewer than 16-hour days at Hopscotch. “We never see the shows,” Taylor admits. “But that’s my favorite part. Being behind the scenes. Seeing a job done right and coming off without a hitch.” More than 5,000 people will crowd City Plaza during this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival. They’ll sing and scream and never notice that, thanks to Taylor McAdams and his crew, the show came off without a hitch.

BAND LIST ING Ace Henderson Raleigh, NC With dynamic rapping and singing abilities added to electro-based production, there is something futuristic and effortless about Ace’s digital sound. Part of a new resurgence in NC hip-hop?! Acid Chaperone Raleigh, NC A psych band with a heavy dose of earlyKrautrock influence. The quartet combines fluid jams anchored by 70’s stoner rock riffs and an exceptionally tight rhythm section. Advaeta Brooklyn, NY Melodic, loud, and textural, pushing velvet harmonies and noise into propulsive, enveloping patterns. From the panoramic racket of newly released LP, Death and the Internet, you wouldn’t know the sustained commotion is the product of just a trio. American Aquarium Raleigh, NC For nearly a decade, American Aquarium have spent most of their time on the road, burning through a sprawl of highways during the day and playing hours of raw, rootsy rock & roll at night. Filled with autobiographical lyrics about last calls, lost love, and long horizons, their songs explore the fulfilling and dispiriting sides of that touring life. Ameriglow Greensboro, NC Percolating from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, they champion the bewitching non-mainstream country that Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, and Lucinda Williams have righteously peddled for decades. Axis: Sova Chicago, IL Originally existed primarily as a solo affair for Brett Sova, his savage guitar and voice accompanied by only a blown-out drum

machine. Has since evolved, expanded, and contracted; no matter the line up, it consistently fries ears and minds. Bandages Raleigh, NC Bandages are a diabolically abrasive fivepiece, sewing dual guitar freak-outs into bludgeoning rhythms. Led by scene veterans Scott Williams and Jeramy Lowe, the band’s frequent live sets and offbeat aggression have stirred fans to date. Battles New York, NY Finely honed future-funk—the sound of three gifted players wreaking havoc on their instruments and the possibilities of sound. There’s a pervasive sense of cool with most everything Battles does, like they’re two steps ahead of everyone else in the room. Big Ups New York, NY Big Ups mix post-punk, hardcore, and indie rock into a brine of agitated, hard-nosed gunk. Much of their momentum comes from frontman Joe Galarraga’s switching between lecture-like calm and shouted grievances. Birds of Avalon Raleigh, NC Spent the last eight years crafting wonderfully woozy, 70’s saturated rock that shifts with each new album. With a recent lineup reconfiguration that added members to the core four, they’re a re-energized flock. Black Clouds Washington D.C. Instrumental trio builds big moody swells balanced by hypnotic, airy lulls, cutting their teeth in D.C. playing with everyone from Deafheaven to ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail Of Dead.

Blaxxx Cleveland, OH & Austin, TX Ohio underground hero Lamont Thomas (Obnox, Bassholes) and Austin’s Orville Neeley and Tom Triplett (OBN III’s) have joined forces to create blistering, impromptu blowouts. Booher Austin, TX Former frontman for Austin’s locally-beloved Zykos, Michael Booher is making music again under his own moniker. Still unreleased LP features loose, spirited rock & roll and Americana songs with Booher’s familiar confessional lyrics and yearning vocals. Boulevards Raleigh, NC Boulevards channels classic disco and 80’s New Jack Swing with an updated electro thump. Right now in Raleigh he’s one of a kind, and his charisma and galvanizing sound is attracting new fans at every performance. Breathers Atlanta, GA Embracing some of the stranger and less frequently explored corners of the 80’s, channeling the nervy, New Wave absurdism of Devo or Gary Numan, while also embracing the retro-futurist space age tendencies of Kraftwerk. Bully Nashville, TN Building off grunge and 90’s alt-rock, Bully is personal, cathartic, smart, and infectious. Warmed up for their Slim’s set by playing Late Night with Conan O’Brien three weeks ago. Cakes da Killa Brooklyn, NY Few rappers are churning out club-ready tracks with the consistency or frequency of Cakes Da Killa. He’s loud and lewd, no doubt, but it’s his scorching flow that elevates his output from bawdy fun to true fire. Carlitta Durand Durham, NC Known for her contributions on tracks by Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange, and

more, Durand has amassed a soulful and deepening discography, including recent release I’ll Be Gorgeous When I Die. Cashmere Cat Halden, Norway Effortlessly integrates his own influences of glittering RnB, French electro, and 00’s club hip-hop with wide, cinematic, and unabashedly bright dance music. Rarely does a new artist emerge with such a unique voice across all their work. Chaz French Washington, DC Urgent and vigorous on the mic, flipping nimbly between blunt boasts and introspective tales of self-improvement and family. At a time when contemplation is paying off (Drake, J. Cole), French’s honesty might really be the best policy. Chelsea Wolfe Los Angeles, CA She’s spent the past five years molding the sounds of beautiful, intense, and mysterious into a fine art. Infused with folk, black metal, noise, and even classic country-andwestern, her songs manage to be wholly singular and invitingly familiar at the same time. Choked Out Raleigh, NC A promising new collaboration between Raleigh’s Blursome and Eyes Low reveals the duo combining a booming bottom end and astral ambiance into a murky mindtrip. Dark yet danceable, and pushing Raleigh’s electronic scene to exciting new depths. Chulo Raleigh, NC Born in NYC and raised in Raleigh, Chulo uses his nimble, charismatic flow to deftly balance boastful party raps with a social conscious streak. With a series of skittering, direct beats, his lyricism makes his output worthy of repeated listens. Clang Quartet Stokesdale, NC Harsh noise, percussion, and performance art for Jesus since 1997.

Clark St. Albans, England In 14 years, the Berlin by way of England electronic artist has released seven fulllength records and a slew of EPs touching on classic techno, jazzy live drum breaks, dystopian noise, hyper sample-centered club tunes, and floating piano ballads. Luminary in his field. Cloud Becomes Your Hand Brooklyn, NY Never sitting still for long, experimental rockers blippy synths and courtly guitars wander around playfully, evoking the spirit of Robert Wyatt, Grizzly Bear, and even early Of Montreal. Dad & Dad Chapel Hill, NC Restless sonic tinkerers who have honed their sound into a tumult of explosive rhythms, rugged textures, and vaguely prog synth & guitar explorations. Daniel Romano Welland, Ontario Steadily attracting audiences and accolades with a style and sound reminiscent of bygone eras, Romano’s take of the classic ‘countrypolitan’ sound manages to avoiding the false nostalgia and rehashes often associated with period-piece music. DJ Earl Chicago, IL Represents the new generation of Chicago’s sound: jazz and funk tunes, devilish synthesizers, unstructured hip-hop samples, heavy sub basses and mesmerizing snares. Footwork and then some.

ples or flowery accents, just an appetite for destruction and a proclivity for propulsion. Dwight Yoakam Los Angeles, CA With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dwight Yoakam helped return country music to its roots in the late ‘80s. Like his idols Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam never played by Nashville’s rules. After nearly four decades, his 2015 release, Second Hand Heart, is a return to his cowpunk roots. Echo Courts Greensboro, NC Subdued, lo-fi vocals beg to brand Echo Courts straight indie pop, but their musicianship and production fall more in the psychedelic camp, allowing them to shape shift with ease. Elisa Ambrogio Holyoke, MA With a new refinement in her latest release, The Immortalist, Elisa Ambrogio’s songwriting and production add a dreamlike aura to her songs through slowly building minimalist guitar, drum, and piano braiding themselves into intricate backdrops. Escher Raleigh, NC When a car accident left singer James Broadhead seriously injured, Raleigh progdeath luminaries Escher reached a vocalless crossroads. Their second instrumental release, The Ground Is Missing, is a concise and captivating effort at the intersections of force and finesse.

Dorthia Cottrell Richmond, VA Windhand vocalist Dorthia Cottrell has ventured beyond the bounds of genre to release a self-titled album of moving ballads and Americana songs. A stark and lovely shift, and one that more than metal fans can appreciate.

EYEHATEGOD New Orleans, LA Inspired by Black Sabbath and Black Flag, as well as the humid, swampy South and its blues legacy, EYEHATEGOD forged a sound that spawned a genre. The sludge metal OGs bent the shape of heavy metal into an oppressively low and torturously slow bog of ominous muck.

Drippy Inputs Boone, NC Conjures ecstasy out of unadorned industrial, wobbly electro, and batshit bass knockers. There are virtually no vocal sam-

affiliate TOMCREW. A leader in Raleigh’s still small but impressive electronic surge, Eyes Low is someone to keep an eye on. Father Atlanta, GA Out of the long-running capital of southern rap, Father’s soft-spoken flow and mercurial production has spread well beyond the ATL. From last summer’s anthem, “Look at Wrist,” to his recent full-length debut, Father has positioned himself as a creative leader in the new wave of hip-hop. FAULTS Carrboro, NC A new outlet for Gross Ghost frontman Mike Dillon, FAULTS explores more atmospheric space than his previous projects while keeping his pop-sensibilities and knack for melody.

microtones and odd time signatures to massed-instrument harmonies and multimovement arrangements—to earn their credentials with contemporary classicals’ cognoscenti. Their patient passages, seismic vamps, and evocative vastness belong to no one else. GoldLink Washington, D.C. With progressive production, a colorful pallet of dizzying and dynamic electro-tinged beats, and a carefree, incisive flow, GoldLink is positioned to become a hip-hop star. Grand Champeen Austin, TX One of Austin’s finest local live bands of the past decade, Grand Champeen shows are increasingly rare these days. Heartfelt rock ’n roll with alt-country, Minneapolis, and Merge influences.

Flock of Dimes Baltimore, MD Flock of Dimes is the solo project of Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, who calls it a “vanity project of questionable skill and intent.” Anyone who has caught her on tour opening for Sharon Van Etten or Sylvan Esso knows her talents are no joke.

Grandma Sparrow Piddletractor Welcome to a unique universe of sound, a wild world of childhood imagination and grown-up musical vision–a sparkling and strange landscape inhabited by a remarkably whimsical figure.

FÓRN Boston, MA Fórn’s ominous doom metal is as heavy and dark as the dirt on a coffin. It’s the sort of slow-burning, cavernous sound that settles like a lead blanket and sucks the light out of the room.

Hank Wood & the Hammerheads New York, NY Stalking a fine line between madness and ferocity, Wood prowls the stage like an icon, while the band drags dense organ swells and frantic cowbell beatings into riffs that volley from proto-hardcore to garage-punk.

Godflesh Birmingham, UK In 1988 vocalist/guitarist Justin Broadrick and bassist G.C. Green started making propulsive tracks that delivered doom with the delicacy and efficiency of a bulldozer. The legendary industrial duo relied on drum machines, rhythms adopted and warped from contemporary hip-hop, and dance music, to back their unique alchemy of upbeat motion and deliberate darkness.

Hanz Durham, NC Part of the welcomed trend of local electronic artists grabbing national attention, Hanz’s sets are eccentric and absorbing, the type of genre defying concoction you’d expect from the recent Tri Angle records signee. HeCTA Nashville, TN A new electronic project featuring a trio of musicians from the Nashville’s Lambchop, HeCTA combines synths and drum machines with frontman Kurt Wagner’s familiar voice.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Montreal, Quebec Canadian post-rock collective boasts enough compositional complexity—from

Ian William Craig Vancouver, BC A noise artist and trained opera singer who plays with piano, tape hiss, and other built instruments, and then manipulates them repeatedly to devastating effect. Jake Xerxes Fussell Durham, NC Transmutes arcane folk and blues into cosmic laments and crooked riverine rambles. Jefre Cantu-Ledesma Brooklyn, NY A master of romantic abstraction and cofounder of influential label Root Strata, Jefre Cantu–Ledesma has produced an impressive collection of experimental music for nearly twenty years. Jenks Miller & Rose Cross NC Carrboro, NC Desolate, brooding improvisation atop glacial keyboards and exploratory rhythm with serrated, rusty guitar and fragile vocals. Jenny Hval Oslo, Norway Original and ever-evolving experimental artist with thought provoking and expanding discography. 2015’s Apocalypse, girl released on Sacred Bones is one of the year’s best—soulful, dreamy, and smart. Jessica Pratt Los Angeles, CA Pratt’s gentle strength comes from making so much from so little: just a voice and a guitar. She exists in a space all her own— with isolation in the breeze, sound resonant in natural light, and a gauze of clouds in the sky. John Chantler Stockholm, Sweden Resident of Brisbane, rural Japan, South London, and now Sweden, John Chantler has developed his sound from organic electronics to his current interests in exploratory electro-acoustics and a loose spin on rhythm. Jubilee New York, NY Infusing NYC with sticky grooves and a comprehensive knowledge of all things

bass. Miami native is a regular behind the decks at various clubs and warehouses, and produced one of the best parties of the summer in Brooklyn with Boyz Noize, Trina, Busy P, and more. Keath Mead Charleston, SC Sunday Dinner, Keath Mead’s 2015 debut, is an LP submerged in the pings and glitches of the information age with tinges of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Melbourne, Australia Completely fried 7-piece garage-psych band making their first Triangle appearance. Two drummers, three guitarists, and even a theremin player, they’ve released SIX albums since September of 2012 and solidified their reputation as must see live act. Las Rosas Brooklyn, NY If you slipped a Las Rosas song in the tracklist of the iconic 60’s garage and psych compilation Nuggets, it would be completely inconspicuous. Arpeggiated guitars with laconic sneering vocals. Lawrence English Brisbane, Australia Composer, media artist, and curator based in Australia, he is the founder of the Room40 label. English’s work prompts questions of perception and memory. Le1f New York, NY Has one foot in glossy Bling Era rap hits and another in the NYC electronic scene, with a muscular, hyperarticulate flow to boot. Leapling New York, NY Leapling’s hushed vocals, orchestral arrangements, and catchy rhythms have helped to affirm them as a band to follow in the realm of experimental pop. Less Western Raleigh, NC A promising young band in the Triangle, Less Western’s dual guitar attack and relaxed sound lands in the space between mid-80’s My Bloody Valentine and Public Strain era-Women.

Leverage Models Jordanville, NY Imagine the subtle tropical synth-pop of Duran Duran and the polyrhythmic anthems of Tears for Fears filtered through the abstract expressionism of a Pollock painting. Lilac Shadows Durham, NC Latest release Brutalism is an austere mixture of clanging guitars, repetitive bass lines, and motorik drumming atop dystopian synth landscapes. Lizzo Minneapolis, MN Born in Detroit and raised in Houston, Lizzo seamlessly bounces between rap, indieballad, and R&B in her latest trap-based hip-hop collective GRRRL PRTY. Lost Trail Burlington, NC Lost Trail is the ambient noise project of husband-and-wife duo Zachary Corsa and Denny Wilkerson Corsa. Utilizing lo-fi and obsolete recording technology to capture a sense of atmosphere and landscape. Loud Boyz Washington, DC Fusing arty, noisy weirdness into raw and unpredictable punk for their enjoyment and yours. Lud Carrboro, NC Output has been a sporadic but cherished presence for almost a quarter century, with six albums full of genre-spanning reference points and a knack for storytelling. Luxe Posh Raleigh, NC A fixture at dance nights throughout the Triangle. Luxe Posh stays busy keeping local crowds busy, and she should feel right at home at Neptune’s, a downstairs venue she’s had bouncing many times before. Lydia Loveless Columbus, OH What makes her music special isn’t any grand statement about rock ‘n’ roll’s future;

it’s the vivid snapshots Loveless captures of damaged characters falling in and out of love, reckoning with their lover’s faults and their own. Mac McCaughan Durham, NC Frontman of Superchunk and co-founder of Merge Records, Mac McCaughan has already cemented his indie-rock legacy several times over. Non-Believers, his first release under his own name, explores his attraction to punk that evolves into something more introspective. Mamiffer Seattle, WA Faith Coloccia and Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom) record graceful and atmospheric piano-led tracks both deliberate and spacious, bewitching and beautiful. Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler Philadelphia, PA Equally inviting and challenging, the music of Harpist Mary Lattimore and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Zeigler comes together as impressionistic works that draw on musical histories ancient and contemporary. May Erwin Asheville, NC Singer Andrew Costantino sounds a little like how Antony Hegarty might sound had she been raised in the mountains of North Carolina. Beautiful and soothing, we’re guessing May Erwin will leave Raleigh with some new fans. Microkingdom Baltimore, MD A wonderful oddity even among Baltimore’s odd and expansive music scene, they play underground rock, free jazz, and improv while planning to “incrementally [tour] the world” over the next two decades. from her adventures in youth, and finds empowerment in sharing them. Moenda Charlotte, NC Instrumental trio has been called free jazz, but its members don’t improvise; they’ve been called noise, but their music is carefully constructed, and, at times, restrained. Elements of dance music, but also of heavy metal; of Afro-Latin jazz, but also of experimental sound. Moon Duo San Francisco, CA Formed in 2009 by Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada, Moon Duo have spent the past six years dispatching supernatural, trance-like signals in the form of krautrock patterned psych trips. Morbids Asheville, NC Asheville’s Morbids specialize in a druggy, sardonic blend of intricate math rock and the reckless abandon of punk. Mumdance London, England Discovered by Diplo at a young age, Mumdance went from a bedroom producer to a globe trotting DJ in a few months. Earlier grime, baile funk, and latin productions have given way to more esoteric, noise-based textures. Must Be The Holy Ghost Winston-Salem, NC Jared Draughon’s layered electronic rhythms fuse with thick looping guitars and soaring vocals, a sound both intricate and shifting. Naked Naps Raleigh, NC Sparse guitar and drum arrangements with emotionally charged and wryly sarcastic musings on the pains of being young at heart. Natalie Prass with Special Guests Richmond, VA WIth the poise and composure of an experienced singer/songwriter, Prass’ instincts for

storytelling, rounded out by inventive brass and orchestral gestures, make her self-titled debut LP tender and exuberant at once. Nathan Golub Durham, NC Years spent honing his chops on the pedal steel guitar, alternating between brisk flurries and meditative stretches, Golub has made a name for himself as one of the area’s most sought-after players. Natural Causes Carrboro, NC Three piece with members from Last Years Men, Paint Fumes, and Flesh Wounds, they mix frantic guitar, synth, and drums as they spew upbeat and spastically rhythmic rock. New Music Raleigh: Music by Oscar Bettison and Evan Ziporyn Raleigh, NC A collective of classically trained musicians dedicated to performing contemporary works of living composers. NMR creates concert experiences that challenge tradition and give voice to innovative and relevant modern music. Nick James Brooklyn, NY Positions himself as a vaguely malevolent audiovisual dictator presiding over epic, high def electronic music. Recent release, The Hawk, comes complete with its own website and a dissertation. No Love Raleigh, NC Their Hopscotch debut last year introduced the band’s frantic punk rock to a whole new audience. Hooks tangle with hooks as singer Elizabeth Lynch shouts holler-along choruses in front of restless, dueling guitars that scream and squirm. Nocando Los Angeles, CA Resident host of Los Angeles’ weekly showcase Low End Theory, founder of Hellfyre Club Records, Project Blowed vet, Nocando brings a distinctly West Coast, punchlineheavy flow to the southeast.

Nots Memphis, TN Released their blistering debut LP We Are Nots in November on the city’s cherished Goner Records. The 11 songs clock in at a rapid 26 minutes and are a torrid post-punk barrage of guitar fragments and shouted exasperation.

Outer Spaces Baltimore, MD On record Outer Spaces offer an expansive sound, somewhere between early R.E.M. and late-era Fleetwood Mac, while live the three piece presents a more intimate vibe with the engaging voice of songwriter Cara Beth Satalino taking center stage.

Obey City New York, NY Sam Obey last two EPs come on the venerable Lucky Me imprint, home to releases by Lunice, Hudson Mohawke, Cashmere Cat, and others. 2013’s Champagne Sounds is a tight, glossy mix, and it’s accompanying 2015 varietal, Merlot Sounds, features one of the year’s best tracks, “Airy,” with Kelela.

Owen Pallett Montreal, Canada For more than a decade, has stood at the forefront of contemporary music. First recording under the name Final Fantasy, and now his own, Pallett is a classically trained violinist who has played and arranged strings for the biggest names in music.

OBN IIIs Austin, TX They’ve put out three lauded LPs since 2011, and each is evidence of their brute energy. But to fully appreciate the intensity, one should follow this succinct advice from their facebook page: “Come see us live. How’s that for a long description, facebook?” Old Man Gloom Santa Fe, NM A cement mixer of assorted heavy and heady styles, featuring members of Converge, Cave In, and Isis. Shapeshifting metal band is bad at sounding the same from song to song, which is really good for the rest of us listening. Ought Montreal, Quebec Adventurous quartet delivering earnest and exuberant post-punk: dextrous and exacting while bursting with fluid energy, indebted to Cap’n Jazz as to Talking Heads. 2014 debut on Constellation Records earned the young band high praise from Exclaim, Rolling Stone, NME, and Pitchfork. Oulipo Raleigh, NC A love of crisp 80’s production and hearton-the-sleeve declarations, Oulipo build gentle synths, kinetic drumming, and slick guitar lines as a bedrock for their earnest and enthusiastic lyrics.

Patois Counselors Charlotte, NC From Charlotte jack-of-all-trades Bo White—a post-punk group consisting of members from NC favorites Blossoms, Brain F≠, Moenda, and Hrvrd. “I wanted to blister some paint off the walls but do it in an anti-macho, smart ass way,” White says of the new project. Phil Cook presents Southland Mission Durham, NC The record release celebration for local virtuoso Phil Cook’s Southland Mission. Sounding like The Basement Tapes played by the Rolling Thunder Revue (his band features members of Sylvan Esso, Bon Iver, and more), Cook’s first solo turn in the spotlight is still very much a family affair. Pile Boston, MA Loud-soft-loud dynamics through unorthodox structures, comforting then crushing, Pile are predictable only in their steady unpredictability. Pill New York, NY 4-piece swings from post-punk funk to bum psych trips to rumbling rockabilly. Much of the momentum comes from an unlikely source...the saxophone. Lead singer Veronica Torres rises to the top—sneering and preening through prismatic lyrics that elevate Pill to a higher plane.

His primal wail and vivid delivery have been hugely influential, but never duplicated. Sannhet Brooklyn, NY An intricate and unrelenting barrage of thundering percussion, blistering guitar, and expressive noise. Revisionist, their sophomore record released in March, ups the ante on the band’s dense, heavy instrumentals. Sarah Louise Asheville, NC Sonic journey through her home in the mountains of North Carolina, her unique

12-string guitar-style is heavily influenced by her clawhammer banjo-playing as well as other Appalachian and nature-based drone styles from around the world. Secret Boyfriend Carrboro, NC Secret Boyfriend is the solo project of Ryan Martin, one half of Boyzone and the founder of the Hot Releases label. Martin steadily and proficiently turns out moody, intimate tracks through tape manipulation, arrayed synthesizers, folk guitar, cresting rhythms, and hushed vocals. Sheer Mag Philadelphia, PA Philly-based five piece who are picking up followers faster than Rocky did running to the city’s Museum of Art steps. They have the blazing 70’s rock aesthetic down to the logo font, and plenty of soul in their blownout shake, but they’re no cheap imitation. Shitty Boots Raleigh, NC Another exciting newer band in the Triangle, working on taking their dabbed-out punk rock from the live setting to the studio later this year. Silent Lunch Durham, NC Stark and dreamy, Silent Lunch balances cool with the comfort of pop melodies and a subtle, self-aware sense of humor. SkyBlew Chapel Hill, NC Aiming to provide an uplifting, powerful, and positive hip-hop message, he has embraced internet, Anime, and video game communities to build a distinct and diverse fanbase of artistically and progressive-minded followers. SMLH Chapel Hill, NC Sam Higgins—the teenage creative force behind SMLH—already has a few years’ worth of scuzzy bedroom pop releases online. Galvanizing drums, spacey noise, and graceful vocals leave the listener eager for what’s next from this young talent.

TZYVYX Raleigh, NC Solo electronic project of Raleigh’s David Mueller, TZYVYX showcases his affinity for many different dance forms. Sweeping layers of synths, boom-bap drums, sunny percussion, and occasional sampled vocals give his tracks their build-and-release. Wahyas Greensboro, NC Citing MC5, The Stooges, and Link Wray as influences, Wahyas describe their songwriting process as “a spiritual ceremony where we eat old tacos and hallucinate.” Warehouse Atlanta, GA Inspired by Brazil’s Bossa Nova and Tropicalia movements, Warehouse takes those sounds to create songs closer to Pylon than João Gilberto.
