PERFORMANCE
FROM THE TOP ROPE!
WORDS: PAUL WEST | PHOTOS: GUILLERMO QUETZALCOATL Before heading to The Motorco in downtown Durham to check out the well-hyped G.O.U.G.E. Wrestling match, a perpetually grumpy friend of mine saw fit inform me that “wrestling isn’t real”. He would also maintain that since wrestling (although a different type) is no longer an Olympic event therefore “it’s not even a sport anymore”. I arrived downtown unable to get the phrase “wrestling isn’t real” out of my mind. I walked into Motorco and
could feel the electricity in the air. A kaleidoscope of light beamed though the rolling clouds produced by a smoke machine. The bar was packed, and the fandom was simply overwhelming. People of all ages and races sharing the dimly lit but spacious venue to watch the impending matches. A gladiatorial atmosphere washed over the bar turned coliseum as nearly a dozen G.O.U.G.E. combatants entered the ring for what was sure to be a chaotic free for all.

14
Suddenly the title of “not real” makes the aerobatic maneuvers of the wrestlers all the more impressive. The perfectly timed cartwheels, back flips, running, and jumping, all practiced and rehearsed over and over and over again. There may be multiple reasons to explain the devotion these fans have for wrestling. It may be the beer; or perhaps the energy of the crowd is all the intoxication you’d need. It could be the moment when you hear a child fan scream out “YOU CAN DO IT TIMMY!” as she tries to give reviving hope to the exhausted protagonist to save him from a high flying body slam.
If we’re going to try to figure out makes a sport real or even what makes a sport a sport. I would say that when you compete in a physical activity, you’ve found yourself in a sport. In terms of what sport is real? Well, my broad, all inclusive definition would cover when you find yourself emotionally invested in the outcome of two athletes going toe to toe— that must not only compete, but compete against their rival’s attempts to stop them. THAT, my grumpy friend, is real.

ART
GEMYNII EVOLVING
WORDS: STACEY WEGER | PHOTOS: TIMOTHY BOWSER Poet, instructor, community activist, and self-taught artist. Durham resident Gemynii is a woman of many hats. Her calling to art began at an early age. “My mother will tell you that I was a creative soul from the very beginning of my existence,” she says. “I grew up drawing people out of magazines, especially National Geographic, Essence, and Ebony, since that was what my parents kept around the house.” Her paintings now reflect her early attraction to the African American experience. Chock full of social commentary and self-reflection, Gemynii uses her work as a way to look both outward and inward, evaluating cultural commonality as well as deeply personal issues such as self-image and awareness. “I use my portraits to tell stories and to challenge my audience’s views on subjects such as sizeism, racism, and beauty. My paintings show the underrepresented in the art world, which can be people with larger or imperfect
18
bodies and people of color. As someone who has struggled with self-love and body acceptance, I love painting women that look like me. People want to see themselves reflected in art and not all of us are a size 6.” Tackling ongoing social issues and attitudes is something that Gemynii pursues both through her artwork and her actions. “My paintings that touch on racial injustice are my reactions to situations where words can’t express the anger and sadness I feel when I see people like George Zimmerman or Darren Wilson or other hyper aggressive police officers get away with murdering unarmed black youth,” she says. Appealing to the minds of her audience is not enough to enact true social change, however, and so Gemynii also takes a hands-on approach by working directly with her community to improve the quality of life of her fellow Durham residents. “When things go wrong in my community I want to do more than just complain about it. I want to be a part of positive change that will photography: TimothyBowser.com

prevent inequalities and injustices in the future.” And so she has, be it by marching on the streets of Durham “going face to face with police,” or by her volunteer efforts, which include teaching adults and children and fighting for LGBTQ equality. “I live and find joy in helping others,” she says. When asked what the one thing is she would like for people to take away from viewing her art, Gemynii has a quick and easy response: freedom. “I want my art to help them think outside of the boxes society tends to put us in. I want them to see and appreciate the beautiful of blackness. Sometimes there is beauty in what would normally not be considered beautiful in the world we live in.”
22
Gemynii’s art can be seen at The Remedy Diner in downtown Raleigh and in downtown Durham at Golden Belt and Hairizon.

ART
BERSK TAKES FLIGHT WITH A MIDNIGHT ANCHOR WORDS: HEATHER LEAHWOOD | PHOTOS: C/O BERSK
Artist Mike Bersk has been arrested multiple times. The charge? Painting where his art wasn’t appreciated. “Some people,” he explains, “like to sky dive or jump off a bridge or drive fast cars.” Bersk, however, splatters his adrenaline rush across alley walls in vibrant shades of blue, purple, and green. Graffiti is his passion, and he’s brought that passion to life all across Raleigh. Now, he’s making it his career. Making a living as an artist is notoriously difficult, but Bersk’s altercations with the law made finding a “legit” job difficult. “I have a background check that is over 13 pages long,” he recounts. “I was in a position I had no job and really no other choice. I moved to Raleigh with zero contacts. No bank accounts. No car. No credit. And no idea what to do.” Ironically, Bersk’s illegal artistic pastime, which barred him from other means of employment, has
26
become his business, his graffiti sought by dozens of local businesses for its dynamic hues and brazen antiestablishment originality. Next month, he’s commissioned to paint a church. “I wanted to start a business doing what I love,” Bersk reminisces. “I worked at a signage shop for a while to learn how to do banners and vinyl lettering. I also do graphic design and paint graffiti and murals. So I combined them all. Got wholesale contacts with leading brands of spray paint, and here I am.” In an economy that devours small businesses, Bersk’s company, called Midnight Anchor, is mushrooming across Raleigh, and even overflowing into new territories, like Virginia, Texas, and Alabama. He even has a client in Canada. “Every single day I do at least one thing to build my business. Passing out stickers. Giving away free art. Or even just sketching.”
27
His murals, both legal and illegal, feature hues and themes as wild as a lucid dream. “The most notable one is 2 Dixie Trail, where I literally painted the entire building, outside every wall, inside every wall, floors and ceilings. The floors, I made it look like you’re standing on a galaxy. The ceiling, I made it look like the sky with clouds.” “I enjoy painting for local-owned bars. Local businesses,” he says, with true conviction for the Raleigh community.
28
Then he adds, “I like to drink lots of PBR and stay up ‘till 3 or 4am and walk the streets at night and see what I can do.” The next day he’ll drive by to admire his work. Commissioned or not, Bersk loves adding his pigmentation to the Raleigh urban-scape, resolving, “I would rather die doing what I love and failing at it, than live working for somebody else and hating it.”
Keep up with Bersk and his adventures on his website at www.midnightanchor.com

LIFE
SIR WALTER’S BONES
WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTO: JOE BRUNO & SEANO These days, John likes to sit by himself. His legs bother him when spending too much time on his feet. Sitting, he says, gives him time to think. He’s lived in or near Raleigh for nearly 80 years, and his most recent address is the Sir Walter Apartments for senior living. Settled comfortably in a metal patio chair on the sidewalk near the apartment’s entrance, John surveys Fayetteville Street. His face is dark and weathered, but his eyes are alert and playful. He laughs easily. He cranes his neck to watch a bicyclist in a neon green helmet glide past. John recalls the first time he visited the Sir Walter. The building is handsome today. It was magnificent 60 years ago. The Sir Walter was bustling – a successful business open for more than 20 years – when John accompanied his father on an appointment. Raleigh’s oldest surviving hotel, it opened in 1924. John remembers his father guiding him from the noise and glare of Fayetteville Street into the relative calm of the Hotel’s expansive lobby. The building had undergone a major renovation in 1935 and the room was a pleasing mix of sleek modern furniture and classical elements. Crystal chandeliers dangled from coffered ceilings high above. He recalls waiting on one of several large couches and the sense of purpose in the hotel – valets darted in and out through glass doors, and men with suits and hats buzzed about. The Sir Walter Hotel
30
was the largest in the state and lodged the capital’s many transitory residents in town for business and politics. North Carolina hadn’t put a Republican governor in Raleigh since 1897, and the Sir Walter was the unofficial home of the state’s all-powerful Democratic Party. Reaching ten stories above Raleigh, the Sir Walter is hard to miss, with its great anchored awning and high rounded ballroom windows. Even with the streetlevel fast food franchise and bail bond agents, the building still retains a sense of its original form, if not its function. Walls have been muted by coats of beige paint. Linoleum rests where rich carpets once did. The hotel thrived for a time, drawing the powerful and influential. In the sixties, as economy motels sprouted up near airports and freeways, the Sir Walter faded, as did downtown. Ownership of the property passed to a foundation supporting North Carolina State University scholarships and financial aid. The rooms were converted into apartments for seniors in the late seventies. John likes it here at the Sir Walter Apartments. He cooks. His grandchildren visit him most weeks. He’s thankful he gets to live in his home town. When reminded that the Sir Walter isn’t what it once was, John scans the ornamental stone façade above the leasing office. “It still has its bones.” base photo: Courtesy of the State Archives of North Carolina.

LIFE
DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK, I’VE BEEN HERE FOR YEARS WORDS: ANFERNEE AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: SPCLGST In 1983 when former Raleigh Mayor, Avery C, Upchurch came home after a long day of ...mayoring (or whatever it is that mayors do), I’m willing to bet he found a comfy seat and a refreshing beverage to unwind with while spinning a record that struck a chord in his soul. Little would he know that over 30 years later his humble abode at 605 Glenwood would serve the local creative community in the same fashion it did him. Brooklyn Heights has always been the place to be yourself and unwind. Author Guy Finley once said, “Every relationship that we have in our lives - our contact with each person, place, and event - serves a very special, if yet to be realized purpose: They are mirrors that can serve to show us things about ourselves that can be realized in no other way.” In the 8 years since Brooklyn Heights opened for business it has provided a reflection point for those that faithfully frequent the establishment. Owner Jason Howard takes a lot of pride in watching patrons become friends and friends grow into successful creatives in Raleigh. A lot of local DJs got their feet wet on his dance floor and have since grown to rise in the ranks of success. He mural artist: Victor Knight
has watched people meet to hash out hare-brained schemes for innovative project only to watch them grow into successful businesses. He has been witness to couples meeting for the first time in his courtyard only to blossom into beautiful families with children. As the years have continued to tick by and Glenwood South has become overrun with fist-pumps and top 40 fads the soul of Brooklyn Heights has remained intact along with the integrity that populated this cozy home-turned-bar at its inception. While the soul remains firmly intact there have been some recent modifications to the outdoor areas. The fire pits and bench seating have been a welcome addition especially during the frozen tundra of mid-February. There is also a fresh new mural from local graffiti heavyhitter Victor Knight on the back deck. The places we choose to spend time in can be as important as the people we choose to spend time with. In this respect Brooklyn Heights will always be a friend we can count on for a comfy seat, a refreshing beverage, and good music for the soul.

LIFE
THE LEGENDARY KRISPY KREME CHALLENGE WORDS: SABRINA GALLI | PHOTOS: SEANO Hailing from the north, I have learned in my year here that the south takes pride in its unique ventures. I try to explain to friends back home that a Waffle House isn’t a Belgian IHOP. My family can’t imagine a magical place where you don’t have to bag your own groceries (Harris Teeter). When I first moved here, I was handed a box of Krispy Kremes and told, “Welcome to North Carolina.” “So this is my life now,” I thought. Turns out that in Raleigh, the doughnut company is creating more goodness than its sweet treats. The Krispy Kreme Challenge started out as a dare between NC State students and now has thousands of participants. Runners start out at the Memorial Bell Tower on the NSCU campus and race 2.5 miles to the Krispy Kreme on North Person Street. Once they get there, the task is to eat a dozen doughnuts before running back to the bell tower. Now I’m no runner, but one has to
36
wonder what kind of preparation goes into completing this challenge. Do you practice with one or two doughnuts, maybe half a dozen? Are you bold enough to wait and see how your body handles the shock of the 2400 calories on that fateful day? I suppose that can’t be pretty. Regardless of a person’s gastrointestinal strength, participating in the run gives you an excuse to eat a ton of doughnuts for a great cause. All of the proceeds from the race go to the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, which has been ranked by U.S News & World Report as one of the nation’s best for pediatric care. This year, according to the Krispy Kreme Challenge Facebook page, the race donated $195,000. Since its inception, it has donated a total of $953,000 to the hospital. I may be extremely proud of my northern roots, but I don’t know of any other city that has this kind of claim to fame.
