ARTIE BARKSDALE KING OF CAMO INTERVIEW: SEANO | PHOTOS: ARTIE BARKSDALE
Artie Barksdale has been painting since his childhood years growing up in Newark, NJ. Things got serious when he first discovered graffiti which kept him very busy as a young adult. After attending the NC School of Arts in 1998 and studying theatrical scene painting and set design he began painting residential and commercial murals through 2000. Artie discovered camouflage as a medium sometime in 2009 after noticing a peeling and fading vinyl camouflage wrap and thinking to himself, “hey I can paint that!” After trying it on a few trucks he was fully hooked and started pursuing hand painted camouflage as a business. Artie doesn’t consider himself a hunter but the hunting industry is baked into his technique and style. To this day Artie continues to run a successful, interior design & hand-painted camouflage business called Big A Camo out of Concord, NC.

In addition to the handpainted camo work, Artie Barksdale practices a variety of artistic expressions. To see more of his art or to contact him for commissioned work please go to: facebook.com/BigACamo and ArtieBarksdale.com

DANCE
BREAKFAST WITH DRACULA
WORDS: SEANO | PHOTOS: SEANO & GRIFFIN HART DAVIS The Prince of Darkness, (better known as Dracula), has been known to do the most horrifying of things in his immortal lifetime. He has a long history of systematically murdering people, drinking their blood and converting them into blood-lusting spawns of hell themselves. It’s strange really because I had breakfast with him this morning and he seemed quite pleasant while ordering a latte macchiato at The Morning Times in Downtown Raleigh. Marcelo Martinez is a principal dancer with Carolina Ballet, the Triangle area’s professional ballet company. Marcelo has scored the lead role in the October program, “Dracula and The Masque of the Red Death”. This program premiered in 2010 and has been a huge success amongst both dedicated and casual fans of the ballet alike. With
12
choreography by Lynne Taylor-Corbett & Robert Weiss and original music by J. Mark Scearce, this dark and haunting performance is a must see this October. We sat with Marcelo to talk about his path to professional ballet dancing, staying inspired and what makes the Raleigh ballet scene unique. When did you know you were a dancer? “When I was 12 years old I received a scholarship to a really good dance school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After a month of classes my teacher asked me, “Are you here just for the adventure of the big city or do you really want to be a dancer?” Nobody had ever asked me that before, and I didn’t really know the answer so I asked if I could take a week to respond. She said yes.
13
14
During the next week I realized I was waking up at 5am to catch the train for an hour-long drive into downtown Rio. From there I would practice for 3 hours after which I would go to another studio class to practice for the rest of the day. I was getting home at 10 in the evening every night. I would eat, shower, sleep and start all over again. On weekends I was sleeping the entire time because I was so tired. I was 16 and had little comfort. It was then I realized that I wasn’t doing this because of the fun of an adventure. I knew I wanted to be a dancer.” What was your path to professional ballet dancing? “I was living in a small town in Paraquay and dancing at a very small studio. I went to a dance competition at the Capital and I won first prize which was a scholarship to a school in Rio. The problem was that I was 12 and my parents weren’t ready to let me go. After doing more competitions and continuing to win in 2000 I received another scholarship offer to Rio. I sat with my teacher and told her I really wanted to do this. She told me that I had to initiate this. Nobody would do it for me. Initially the scholorship was only for 3 months but things went so well that I ended up dancing with them for four years. During this time a woman from an American studio came to Rio and worked with us. She invited me to dance at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. That was the most amazing experience. It felt like the top of my career at the time. I was asked to be part of the company in 2005 and I didn’t even think twice. I loved dancing at the Kennedy Center but I was ready to leave after three years. A friend of mine talked with Ricky Weiss and founding artistic director Robert Weiss
to set up the audition here in Raleigh. When a spot opened the position as offered to me and I accepted instantly.” What is unique about the ballet scene in Raleigh? “One thing I really love about Raleigh is that the people who come to the ballet really care about the performance. In Washington it felt like people were there for the social stuff, like a business meeting. Others would come just to be in the Kennedy Center. People would walk up to me and say, “Wow, you were great” when I wasn’t even performing in that show. People were there for the social scene and business and we were just part of the deal. Here in Raleigh the people care about the program. They care about the content. They love the dancers. Raleigh is a smaller city with a strong community big enough to properly show support for a company like ours.
See Marcelo Martinez starring in “Dracula” presented by the Carolina Ballet at the Fletcher Opera Theater in the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Shows run from October 9-26, 2014. Ticket information can be found at CarolinaBallet.com

ART
ARTIST YOU SHOULD KNOW:
DEREK TOOMES INTERVIEW: SEANO
There isn’t a nicer guy in the Raleigh arts scene (or anyone who sports a more recognizable beard) than Derek Toomes. The only thing more admirable than his company is his artwork. Derek’s brooding, explorative aethetic grips you in an instant and holds your attention like a compelling conversation. We hung out with Derek in his studio at the Bonded Llama and asked him a few questions about his life as an artist: Can you tell us a little about your creative process from inspiration, planning, execution to finish? “I find a lot of inspiration from my long-standing interest in graffiti, skateboarding, punk rock, and the cultures that go along with those scenes. I’m also really drawn to investigating the history of my parents’ generation and how my generation perceives it. It was an era that was really pushing boundaries, and I’m especially interested in its development of socialism and technology. As a result of this interest in mid-twentiethcentury culture, I’ve most recently been creating works from found imagery to explore how we visualize and distort an idea or recollection of the past. Once I’ve compiled a selection of related found images to choose from, I start with an idea and look for something that speaks to that concept. At this point, it becomes a matter of problem solving: this is what I want, this is what I have, now let’s make it work visually and conceptually. I then begin to form a composition of layered images, colors, shapes, and text. Text has become an important part of my work for a number of different reasons. Though text usually speaks to the era and idea of my work, I like to use text as more of a
19
formal element rather than a dictated message; it’s meant to prompt ideas and add aesthetic appeal instead of fully defining the work. I also obscure text by utilizing different languages and unexpectedly cutting and blending words.” What time of the day do you feel most creative? “I’m at my most productive and creative from sunset until 4 a.m. It’s when I can really get moving in my studio. It’s probably that I’m constantly occupied with everything going on during the day. I really need life around me to slow down so that I can hear myself think and start to process my thoughts and ideas. That’s not to say one part of the day could happen without the other. It is important for me to get out and socialize so that I can be inspired and excited about being in the studio.”
20
Is there a living artist who is really inspiring to you right now? It would be hard to name a single living inspirational artist, but I’ve always loved the work of Steve Powers (ESPO). He has been able to stay true to an art form that is very much his own style and yet he is always evolving. He’s an artist that has successfully blended different areas of contemporary art; sign painting, graffiti, graphic design, fine art, comprehensive installations, etc. I was always intrigued with how there were these boundaries between creative practices and techniques, and seeing that all of my interests and inspirations could work together was a big part of making me the artist that I am now.
Where can people see your work? What shows or projects do you have in the works? I usually exhibit locally with Flanders Gallery, and it has access to much of my inventory at any given point. My work will be part of a group exhibition opening there on October 3rd, 2014. I’m excited for things to come for the gallery. Its director, Kelly McChesney, has some big plans coming up, and I think they will provoke a lot of new excitement within the local community and beyond. I am currently holding an interim working residency at the UNCGreensboro Art Department. It’s been a fast-paced transition, but I’m excited to be in the environment and to see what comes of it. It’s always inspiring to be working among the expertise of great faculty and the energy of creative students. The school was a great resource to me during my undergraduate career, and it’s nice to be back and learning new things with the new technologies available in its studio spaces. There are a few mural works through out the area including a large-scale mural in downtown Durham that I recently completed with fellow artist Mat Curran. I also have several projects for public spaces in the works for 2015. There are a few things in Raleigh and Durham, and even a project in rural eastern North Carolina. There should be some fun stuff to come, and I plan to be working with great talents such as Shaun Richards, Taylor White, Pete Sack, David Eichenberger and Spcl Gst on some up coming shows and projects.

LIFE
THE GHOST SIGNS OF DOWNTOWN RALEIGH WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
The ghost signs of Raleigh haunt the alley corners and store fronts. They float above your head and meet you straight-on. Some assault you with color; others are so faint you fear they’ll blow away in the next breeze. Our generation stands witness to the birth of the new Raleigh on the bones of the old. The city spins vertical above us. But birth does not require death. The old pre-boom Raleigh is still with us, if just a little quieter. You’ll need to lean in to hear. The paint has a story to tell if you take the time to listen. Each faded brick is a street-level reminder of someone’s dream and every flaking chip was once sticky-wet fresh from the can. Seasons and progress have made short work of what once seemed everlasting. In the shadow of a new skyline, Raleigh’s ghost signs are whispered reminders that impermanence is the only permanence. The ghost signs gently warn that each of us is vibrant in our time and will weather with years. We hope to make our marks in bold, broad strokes. We pray the paint can last and will fade gracefully – and so slowly – from the walls.

MUSIC
TAKING THE LEAP PHONTE COLEMAN INTERVIEW: SEANO | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
Phonte Coleman has been on an incredible artistic journey since the prolific rap group Little Brother released their pivotal debut album, The Listening over ten years ago. During this time he has released more than a dozen albums between his work with Little Brother and the neo-soul collective, The Foreign Exchange. We sat down with the Greensboro native to explore the moment he stepped out of his 9 to 5 job and into a career of artistic expression. What motivated you to take the leap and pursue a career as a professional musician? “It was a combination of confidence, stupidity and youth. I was definitely confident and knew we [Little Brother] could make a real go at it. The stupidity came in by the way I ran through jobs and took gambles. Youth is the time to really go after your dreams. The older you get, the more you know and with wisdom often comes caution and pessimism. After seeing so much of the world and seeing how things actually work-—I don’t have that bright-eyed and bushy tailed feeling anymore. Your
32
youth is the time to take risks and make big mistakes. The older you get, the more your mistakes will cost you. My grandmother used to say, “God takes care of babies and fools”…and I was a young fool! God took care of me as a young fool…but he won’t take care of me as an old fool. I believe in a universal law—no matter who or what you believe in, if you believe in yourself enough to step halfway out onto that stage and let go of that security blanket, if you have enough faith in yourself, the universe will see you through other half. Now, just because it meets you doesn’t mean you will automatically be successful but I do think there is something to be said as I look back on life on my accomplishments. The things that brought me the greatest joy and reward—none of them came without some sort of risk. None of it. There was never an accomplishment where I went to another level, professional or artistically, where there was a safe bet. Everything was a wild card. Three dudes from NC [Little Brother] were not supposed to bring back early 90’s boom-bap hip hop. That wasn’t
33
34
IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF ENOUGH TO STEP HALFWAY OUT ONTO THAT STAGE—THE UNIVERSE WILL SEE YOU THROUGH OTHER HALF.
” 35
”
supposed to happen. A guy from the Netherlands and a guy from NC were not supposed to make an album together [The Foreign Exchange] without ever meeting and then receive a Grammy nomination. That was not supposed to happen. You feel me? All the things that I’ve done that took me there included great deal of risk involved. In my experience, you really have to take a big chance to get to that great place you are trying to get to. Security is something that’s for prisoners. Everyone gets so caught up in the mindset of wanting their security. You can say you want your security but that security comes at a price. The security comes at the price of your freedom. You’ll get your paycheck every two weeks, on time—direct deposit. But you will have to be exactly where I tell you to be and do exactly what I tell you to do everyday. That’s the trade off. Once I got used to taking the leap and swinging from vine to vine I got used to living in the jungle. The trick is never looking down. If I actually sat and thought about all the balls I have in the air. All the things I’m juggling. The financial pressure I’m under as an artist. If I actually sat and thought about that I would lose my mind. I wouldn’t be able to write. Knowing how fragile all this is can make you crazy if you really think about
36
it. I make a living off my imagination. I go in my room and I create something. Maybe people will like it. Maybe they won’t. If you really sat down and thought about every move you were making you wouldn’t be able to do anything. You have to keep moving forward. Always moving on to the next thing. The moment I look down is the moment I feel like everything could collapse.” What projects do you have in the works right now? What can we look forward to in 2015? “Some releases are lined up for 2015. We started recording but I can’t talk a lot about the details for that project. I am doing a lot of voiceover work for tv. I’m looking for an outlet and this looks like the next thing I really lean into. I’ve been doing some voice work for the 2nd season for Back Dynamite on Cartoon Network from the same people who write the Boondocks. Im always looking for the next thing. As an artist you can’t box yourself. You never know what’s going to hit. Whether its music, writing, speaking, voice over, or me hosting Family Feud one day. If Steve Harvey hangs it up they can call me.” Keep up with Phonte and The Foreign Exchange at: TheForeignExchangeMusic.com

LIFE
THE SPIRIT OF JACK JOHNSON & THE CRUMBLING OF ST. AGNES WORDS: ANTHONY AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO Located on a sleepy corner of St. Augustine’s College campus on State Street and Oakwood Avenue, the crumbling ruins of St. Agnes Hospital rest quietly. This Raleigh Historical Landmark served as the largest hospital for blacks between Atlanta and Washington during the early 1900’s. It opened its doors in 1896 and served primarily as an African American nurse training center with hospital facilities. A fire brought the building to its knees in 1904 where the students organized under the direction of Reverend Henry Beard Delany to rebuild the school themselves, quarrying and laying the stone that makes up the current structure that we see today. On June 10, 1946 Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion of the world, was refused service at a diner in Franklinton, NC. As he left the diner he lost control of his car and crashed causing life threatening injuries. He was brought to St. Agnes Hospital as it was the closest hospital that would serve blacks in the vicinity. It was here that he died from his injuries at 68 years of age.
It is said that the technology existed to save his life although it seems it wasn’t available at St. Agnus. However, it does seem that the technology was available at the whites-only Rex Hospital a few miles away. There has been word that new investment would be made to resurrect this landmark and breath new life as a Rex operated graduate program facility for St. Augustines. The initial plans mentioned it was slated to reopen in 2014 but by the looks of these photos that is not happening anytime soon. This beautiful structure rests proud and silent on the corner of State Street and Oakwood, housing the energy of countless lives, memories and struggles which are palpable to this day. Historical photos along with additional photos of the St. Agnus ruins can be seen at: OakCityHustle.com/StAgnes
