Dear Reader, As we begin 2020, I want to take a moment to wish you a happy, healthy, and joyful new year on behalf of the city of Nashville and Davidson County. I am proud to be the Mayor and resident of a community that prides itself on extending warmth and generous hospitality towards everyone. I extend a warm welcome to all who are visiting our wonderful city, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. I hope you have a fabulous time enjoying Music City’s world-class entertainment, local businesses, food and arts scene, and so much more that our community has to offer. I have seen how a city prospers when leaders are intentional about inclusiveness, and I look to continue prioritizing diversity in my administration’s agenda this year. Metro Nashville is committed to the equal rights and treatment of LGBTQ+ residents, workers, and visitors. We aim to create a safe, accountable, inclusive, and welcoming community so Nashvillians feel represented, respected and appreciated. My office’s LGBTQ Liaison, Brandon Marshall, is reaching out to members throughout the community and can be reached by e-mail at Brandon.Marshall@Nashville.gov at any time. Before becoming the 9th Mayor of Nashville and Davidson County, I centered my campaign on ensuring everyone benefits from our city’s tremendous growth. I’m a strong believer in putting our focus back on our neighborhoods and the many small and independent businesses that operate throughout Davidson County, including those owned by LGBT individuals. Whether you’re a newcomer or have called Nashville home for some time, I want you to know about the hard work and success of the many LGBT-owned businesses in our communities. These dedicated business-owners and entrepreneurs strive to make Nashville a warm and welcoming city for both locals and visitors, and I’m grateful for their many contributions to our local economy and to our city’s reputation as an inclusive destination. I hope you’ll join me at one of my monthly public events, “Coffee with Cooper” or “Mayor’s Night Out.” Shaping neighborhoods and building a community are team efforts, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the LGBTQ+ community to carry out plans that make Nashville a city that works for everyone. Here’s to a prosperous New Year! Sincerely, John Cooper Mayor

Tennessee Activism There are many great places to visit in Tennessee. There’s Nashville, of course. For the Elvis devotee and the fan of jazz and blues, Memphis and Beale Street are a must. In Eastern Tennessee, there’s the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Dollywood. These are just a few of our state’s largest tourist draws. Tennessee is a beautiful state with a lot going for it. Unfortunately, for the LGBTQ community, Tennessee is also a state that needs a lot of work on LGBTQ rights and protections. Tennessee’s largest cities are LGBTQ friendly, by and large, but this is less universally true in smaller cities and rural communities. Anti-LGBTQ state legislation has prevented even Nashville and Memphis from achieving what would have been otherwise high marks on the HRC Municipal Equality Index. However, a vibrant community of independent activists, advocacy networks, and organizations is working diligently to make Tennessee a better place for LGBTQ people to live, work, and play! There are so many, we could not possibly mention them all. You can read more about those primarily working in health and human services on page 26! Aside from those health organizations, the Tennessee AIDS Advocacy Network (TAAN) is one of the organizations focused on the rights and protections of those living with HIV/AIDS. They work “to create a Tennessee that is free from stigma and discrimination and provide mutual support for people living with HIV/AIDS and affected communities through outreach and public education, policy advocacy, and community-building.”
Some of Tennessee lawmakers most dangerous efforts are aimed at our LGBTQ children, and there are many organizations working to protect them from the harmful intentions of such bills. One of the most active voices on behalf of LGBTQ young people in Tennessee is GLSEN Tennessee, a chapter of GLSEN, a national organization fighting for every student’s right to a safe, supportive education. This mostly-volunteer chapter supports students and educators locally, organizes around LGBTQ-affirming public policy, plans teacher trainings, and hosts events for students, educators, parents, and allies. Perhaps the most prominent, and broadest scoped, activist group in the state is the Tennessee Equality Project (TEP). TEP fights every anti-LGBTQ bill that hits the state legislature, as well as local governments, and works to promote legislation to protect the LGBTQ community. They also educate locals about political threats and train citizens in proLGBTQ activism. Along with TEP, two other groups are particularly involved in political activism: the local chapter of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber voices the concerns of businesses over anti-LGBTQ sentiment in legislation and its negative impacts on industry, and HRC broadly supports national and local efforts. There are many other LGBTQ and adjacent organizations working to make Tennessee better for everyone, so get out and explore where. We are sure you’ll find a group that you can support!

SPECIAL EDITION 2020
Where to Eat
You may have this idea that Nashville cuisine is 5-alarm hot chicken, an endless basket of biscuits, excellent barbeque, a Willy Wonka waterfall of sweet tea, and enough banana pudding to land a high dive into. And you’re not wrong. But the thing is, Nashville’s ever-expanding food scene brings with it such variation and excellence that one would have to work hard to a.) ever experience all of it or b.) ever grow tired of it. Between the hallmark restaurants that exemplify the best of Nashville cooking and all of the new kids on the block, dining delights await you at every turn. Nashville Hot Chicken has become something of a national phenomenon in the past few years. When KFC knocks you off, you know you must be doing something right. There are so many excellent options to light your taste buds on fire that
it would be impossible to pick only one. Party Fowl, Prince’s, Bolton’s, and Hattie B’s each have their devotees and it would be all but impossible to pick a favorite. The only warning I can give you is this: Pack your antacids! There’s another peculiarly Southern dining concept you may run into: the Meat and Three. It’s a fairly simple concept of two menus, one with meat selections and the other with an enormous list of side dish options. White-tablecloth fine dining this is not. But you’ll get to experience the widest variety of greens and vegetables the Southern table has to offer. Among the best known are Arnold’s Country Kitchen (605 Eighth Ave. South) and Wendell Smith’s (407 53rd Ave North). Two Nashville institutions merit their own category: The Originals. I speak of Monell’s and The Loveless Cafe. In short, if either
Nashville LGBTQ Business Directory and Travelers’ Guide
11
of these restaurants ever lock the doors for good, we might as well just pack up our biscuit cutters and move to… I don’t know… Louisville? Either way, bring your patience and prepare to wait if you’re going to eat in either of these restaurants. Monell’s (1235 Sixth Ave. North) is situated along a picturesque Germantown street and allows you the unique circumstance of getting to know some strangers. The family-style dining setup involves passed side dishes and a rotating nightly lineup of meats. But the fried chicken… oh, the fried chicken… it’s always there and always kept hot and fresh by the attentive staff. Monell’s also has two other locations, one of which is cafeteria style (2826 Bransford Ave.) and a quick lunch stop. The Loveless Cafe (8400 Highway 100) is a bit of a trek from downtown at 18 miles out, but we’ve never taken anyone there who has been left hungry at the end of the meal or disappointed in their choice. The biscuits are legendary, always served hot from the oven with butter and three types of preserves: peach, blackberry, and strawberry. The hashbrown casserole will put you in direct communication with the divine entity of your choice. And then there’s the turkey barbeque served with cranberry barbeque sauce. We’re loath to tell you about this dish because we don’t want them to run out when we go, but just trust us on this. Talking about your favorite barbeque in this town is akin to choosing a bear trap you want to stick your foot into. Everyone’s got their favorite and will defend it mightily. Suffice it to say, when food writers decided in 2019 that Nashville’s barbeque was better than what you’ll find in Memphis, we just shook our heads in agreement. We already knew. Edley’s (multiple locations), Martin’s (mul-
12
tiple locations), Peg Leg Porker (903 Gleaves St.), and Jack’s (multiple locations) hold down the fort, but we’ve had Memphis-style plant its flag here recently, with Central BBQ opening a location at 408 Eleventh Ave. North. If you’re looking for fine dining, Nashville’s smash hit lineup of current offerings won’t disappoint. With names like Husk (37 Rutledge St.), The Catbird Seat (1711 Division St.), Rolf & Daughters (700 Taylor St.), and Bon Appetit mag’s Hot 10 Best New Restaurants for 2019 entry Tailor (1300B Third Ave. North), you might have to fight for a prime reservation, but you’ll remember the experience. Among our favorite fine establishments are Josephine (2316 12th Ave. South), Germantown Cafe (1200 Fifth Ave. North), and Silo (1121 Fifth Ave. North). Look over the menus and let your tastebuds lead the way! But then there are times when you just want something comforting, quick, and perfectly Nashville. Here’s a few favorites: The Belgian burger at M. L. Rose (multiple locations). The Meatball Pie at Five Points Pizza (two locations). Absolutely any of the doughnuts at Status Dough (921 Gallatin Ave.) or Five Daughters Bakery (multiple locations). A pasta bowl from Nicoletto’s with any of their fresh homemade pastas (two locations). A late-night grilled sandwich at Duke’s (1000 Main St.). The perfect Pad Thai from The Smiling Elephant (2213 Eighth Ave. South). A morning-after-the-party breakfast at Sky Blue Cafe (700 Fatherland St.) or brunch at The Lipstick Lounge (1400 Woodland St.) Whatever food soothes your soul, you’ll find it here in Nashville. While we do Southern hospitality and serve it with a liberal dose of sweet tea, we do pretty much everything damn well. So, sit down, open that biscuit, and let’s have a meal to remember!

Explore Nashville’s
LGBTQ Nightlife A night out in Nashville goes way beyond a beer and a shot in a Broadway honkytonk. Nashville’s LGBTQ scene offers nightlife options for those who want to dance until 3 a.m., the finest in drag, widely varied options for the music lover, spectacular Sunday nights for the showtunes maven, special events just for the leather lover, and a night of the week for pretty much everyone in between. Just make sure you tip your bartenders, kids! Beginning in East Nashville with The Lipstick Lounge (1400 Woodland Street), you’ll find a welcoming environment with one of the best weekend brunches in Nashville. Lipstick offers trivia nights, karaoke, live music performances by artists like the astoundingly talented Shelly Fairchild, and some of the best bar

food around. It’s hard to miss the bright purple exterior of the building and once inside, you’re already family. While we’re over in that neighborhood, if dancing is your thing, you need to know about QDP. Queer Dance Party takes place monthly at The Basement East (917 Woodland St.) in East Nashville. The event is generally held every 3rd Friday of the month, but occasionally special events may happen, so check Facebook and Twitter for the latest. Whether you’re into living your gold lamé fantasia, feeling like a leather harness look, or just want to dance the night away in a t-shirt and jeans, QDP is always welcoming, incredibly diverse, and - get this - it normally costs one red-hot dollar to get in the door. Seriously.

Heading over to the Wedgewood-Houston area, you’ll find TRAX (1501 Ensley Blvd.). TRAX presents karaoke nights, is the home for the Satin Dolls drag performers, and is also the home bar to The Conductors, Nashville’s Leather-n-Levis group. With one of the best patio spaces in Nashville, TRAX is the perfect venue for a warm summer night and a drink under the stars with a cigar. Queue up some tunes, hit the pool table, and have a great time with friends new and old. Pecker’s Bar and Grille (237 Hermitage Avenue) is a real hybrid. You have the parts of Pecker’s that feel like a sports bar. And then you add in karaoke nights. And line dancing nights (with lessons!). And The Peckerettes drag performers. And the fact that it’s the home bar for the Nashville Grizzlies Rugby team’s third half. Oh, yeah, and bingo. Add in another great patio and Pecker’s delivers the goods, no matter what it is you want in a night out. Canvas Lounge (1707 Church Street), with its technicolor church chandeliers, sets itself apart with Eagle Night, where you can break out the leather and listen to the finest DJs spin until 3 a.m. With theme nights like 80s night, Bear Trap, and twice-weekly karaoke, Canvas Lounge brings in diverse crowds, to be sure, but never fear… you’re all always welcome and you’re certain to have a good time. Whether you’re dancing, drinking, or people watching, Canvas’ cool space will make for a great night out. A little closer to downtown, you’ll find the side-to-side homes of Play Dance Bar (1519 Church Street) and Tribe. At Play, you’re likely there to watch the Playmates present some of Nashville’s finest drag in the show bar or you’re over in the dance bar, finding yourself on Nashville’s largest regular LGBTQ dance floor. Their
16
weekly college night allows the 18+ set in for a night on the town and the bar regularly plays host to RuPaul’s Drag Race legends on the mainstage, along with stars from America’s Got Talent, Survivor, and Big Brother. Right next door at Tribe (1517 Church Street), Sunday Funday starts early and goes right into Nashville’s only Showtunes night. With game nights, Drag Race viewing parties, trivia and karaoke, Tribe offers something for everyone. The bar food is great and so is the people-watching! Tribe’s crowd encompasses just about everyone you can imagine, and they regularly play host to the Nashville Grizzlies Rugby beer busts and banging after-parties when there’s a queer icon performing at Bridgestone Arena. Also, even though they are special events and don’t take place year-round, we have to make sure you know about ATHENA and Sweet Tea Dance! Sweet Tea Dance takes place in a different venue every month through the spring and summer months in Nashville. Here’s your mood board: Think day drinking. Think sultry Sunday afternoons. Think great DJs. Sweet Tea Dance is a perfect wind-down to a summer weekend. Get out of that air conditioning and get ya some Sweet Tea, hun...tea! ATHENA is the new kid on the block, bringing an all-out dance / circuit party to Nashville’s Analog at the Hutton Hotel. Thus far, the event has been presented at Pride and in mid-winter, so stay tuned to your social media for future dates and announcements. Whether your vibe is chill or a sweaty dance-off, Nashville’s LGBTQ nightlife scene will make sure you have a good time, get you a little tipsy if that’s your thing, and make you wonder why your gay bars at home aren’t nearly this fun.

Explore the Arts Singer-Songwriter Harlan Howard once described country music as “Three chords and the truth.” The truth about Nashville in 2020 is that we’ve got a lot more to offer beyond country music. The city’s Arts and Culture scene these days goes way beyond neon-lit honkytonks and the slow wail of a pedal steel. The performing arts institutions around the city are part of the cultural bedrock upon which the city builds its pride. Whether opera, ballet, classical music, musical theatre, or plays, Nashville offers plenty of resident, local, and collegiate companies and touring shows to fill your evenings! The city’s largest performing arts center is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, or TPAC

(505 Deaderick St.). Under the leadership of new CEO Jennifer Turner, TPAC’s three stages welcome hundreds of thousands of guests each year. The 2472-seat Andrew Jackson Hall houses the touring Broadway series, the Nashville Ballet, some performances by the Nashville Opera, and various one-night engagements. The smaller 1075-seat James K. Polk Theatre hosts more intimate performances by touring comedians and speakers and some productions by Nashville Repertory Theatre. Rounding out the trio is the 256-seat Andrew Johnson Theatre, a flexible black box space where the majority of Nashville Rep’s work is performed. tures cutting edge new works, classic American dramas, and popular musical comedies. Its casts regularly feature Nashville’s finest local actors and singers. Every May, the Rep hosts its Ingram New Works Festival, an annual workshop for young playwrights to create new works in conjunction with experienced and often award-winning writers. Since 2009, the Ingram New Works Project has supported the development of over 60 new plays. (nashvillerep.org) The Nashville Opera, which will begin its 40th anniversary season in the fall, celebrates the traditions of both grand opera and daring new works every year. Under the leadership of Artistic Director John Hoomes, Nashville Opera delights its audience with two mainstage performances at TPAC’s Jackson Hall and two intimate chamber-style productions at its Noah Liff Opera Center facility in Nashville’s Sylvan Heights neighborhood. (nashvilleopera. org) Nashville Ballet, led by Artistic Director Paul Vasterling, brings the world of classical dance to TPAC’s two largest stages. Founded in 1986, Nashville Ballet presents hallmark works of ballet repertoire and creates contemporary dance presentations throughout its season. The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet, also located in Sylvan Heights, provides rehearsal and training facilities for the company and its youth dance academy. (nashvilleballet.com) Nashville Children’s Theatre is the oldest continually operating professional children’s theatre company in America. Operating from their playhouse just southeast of downtown, NCT introduces younger audiences to the art of theatre through youth-friendly plays and performances. (nashvillechildrenstheatre.org) The Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s mission may be narrower than those of its counterparts, but Executive Artistic Director Denice Hicks doesn’t allow the Bard to be stodgy. With daring casting, intriguing productions, and the choice to tour its productions across Middle Tennessee, NSF brings Shakespeare out of your dusty freshman English class and into visceral focus as these centuries-old pillars of English theatre come alive in a Winter season presented at Belmont University and an outdoor Summer season at OneCity in Midtown. (nashvilleshakes.org) Last but hardly least among Nashville’s cultural institutions is the Nashville Symphony. Housed in the breathtaking Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the Symphony’s classical and popular offerings cover the spectrum from Beethoven to Bob Dylan. Under the direction of Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero, the Symphony entrances audiences with its technical virtuosity and lyrical ensemble playing. The Grammy Award-winning ensemble is situated in the heart of downtown, only a block off Broadway. (www.nashvillesymphony.org) The arts in Nashville thrive in an environment that is filled to overflowing with music. While we may be known as The Music City for our roots in country music, Nashville’s performing arts companies excel at delivering world-class entertainment for every kind of audience. From black tie opening nights to Broadway hits from Ballet to Berlioz, for those in search of theatrical and classical offerings, Nashville is more than ready to stand and deliver.

LGBT Health & Human Services Historically, the LGBTQ community in Nashville had to take care of itself to keep from falling behind in terms of health and well-being. Probably the most obvious case is how the rising need for care of HIV/AIDS patients let to the organization and funding of Nashville CARES in the 1980s. The Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Clinic has long been a patient-focused medical home for people living with HIV. Their mission “is to offer the finest care possible by treating our patients with dignity and compassion, using advanced technology and treatments.” Vanderbilt centralizes care for its patients to provide comprehensive treatment. Over the years, Nashville CARES has partnered with various organizations and agencies, which have become more LGBTQ friendly and have expanded their services to the community. Nashville CARES, Street Works, and Neighborhood Health partnered to for My House, a one stop shop Health & Wellness Community Center for same gender loving men of color and gay/bisexual men. Support services include a drop-in & event space with free WiFI, evening programming, HIV & STI testing, prevention education, medical care, PrEP, volunteer opportunities and other integrated activities. When it comes to sexual health and other services, the new kid on the block is Music City PrEP, a sexual health and wellness clinic providing affordable and need-
26
based charitable care. They provide discreet no-cost HIV screens and STD/STI testing. If appropriate, they’ll provide you with a prescription for Truvada (PrEP). If you are unable to afford the medication, they’ll work to help you cover the costs. The OASIS Center is dedicated to serving the youth of Nashville, including providing programs for LGBTQ youth. OASIS’ Just Us program is dedicated to helping LGBTQ youth achieve their full potential. The program provides an array of services centered on support and advocacy. And it’s not just teens who benefit. Just Us offers loads of resources and assistance for families and agencies who work with young people. OASIS also hosts PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meetings. Recently, when OASIS Center became unable to continue housing LGBTQ homeless youth on a longer term basis, the community organized to provide shelter for vulnerable youths. Over just a few years, that effort grew into what we now know as Launch Pad, a ‘street free sleep’ initiative with a mission ‘to create a network of temporary safer sleeping shelters for homeless youth 18-24 years of age, which are open and affirming to LGBTQ youth.’ These and many other programs and agencies serve the LGBTQ community in Middle Tennessee. To learn more, contact the programs directly.

For the Music Lover Music City earns its nickname day in, day out, every day of every week. Beginning with the studios and songwriters on Music Row, music flows through this city like the twisting curves of the Cumberland River. From Country to Classical and Rock to Pop, Nashville’s music offerings are nearly unlimited. When you think Nashville, chances are you think of the neon wonderland of Honky-Tonks, dives, and classic Nashville institutions found on Lower Broadway and Second Avenue. In so many Nashville neighborhoods, you’re certain to find the venue or bar with the right band to make your night memorable.
Along Broadway, the big names of country music have their names in lights. These massive, multi-level complexes dot the landscape and give you plenty to choose from. You can learn to line dance at the Wildhorse Saloon (120 Second Ave. North) and watch up and coming stars on the enormous stage. Nudie’s Honky Tonk (409 Broadway) is always a favorite of locals and visitors, offering burlesque on Monday and Wednesday nights. On the smaller size, Legends Corner (428 Broadway) and Crossroads (419 Broadway) allow you to get up close and personal with the stars of tomorrow. Remember, though, to bring your dollar bills

to tip the musicians, especially if you have a request! Walk down the crowded sidewalks on a warm night and let the music wash over you like a wave. Ask a local and they’ll tell you this: pick your bar by the band you like the sound of. You’ll be drinking the same bourbon anywhere you go, so you might as well love the band you’re hearing! In Printer’s Alley, you’ll find a different flavor of Southern culture at Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar (220 Printers Alley). Look no further than Skulls Rainbow Room (222 Printers Alley) for the best in jazz. If jazz is your mood, Rudy’s Jazz Room (809 Gleaves St. in The Gulch) is another Nashville classic. Farther afield from Lower Broad, you’ll find such storied venues as Exit/In (2208 Elliston Place) in Midtown. Monday nights light up at Midtown’s Winners Bar (1913 Division Street) with the weekly Whiskey Jam. Also on Monday nights at The Listening Room Cafe (618 Fourth Ave. South), check out the Song Suffragettes. This group of young female artists creates a rotating weekly cast of talent waiting to be heard and get that big break. If Country Music is your religion, trust and believe that you need to tour the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum (222 Fifth Ave. South) and the world-famous Ryman Auditorium (116 Fifth Ave. North). There’s no venue on earth like the Ryman, especially when the Grand Ole Opry comes home for two months in the winter. During the rest of the year, you can find the Opry at their usual home, The Grand Ole Opry House (2804 Opryland Drive), and take a backstage tour to immerse yourself in the history and culture of country. If classical music is more your speed, look no further than Schermerhorn Symphony Center (1 Symphony Place), home of the
32
Grammy Award winning Nashville Symphony. Under the baton of Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero, the Symphony plays both classical and pops concerts and gets to be the best house band in town for stars of both pop and country when they get to headline the Schermerhorn. Looking to take home some music memories? Nashville is home to some fantastic record stores, featuring both new and pre-owned wax. McKay’s can be found in West Nashville (636 Old Hickory Blvd.), and East Nashville is home to both Grimey’s (1060 East Trinity Lane) and The Groove (1103 Calvin Ave.). Grimey’s often features in-store performances that line up with new album releases and you’re never sure who you might run into! If you’re coming to town in the Spring or early Summer, chances are good you’re here for Tin Pan South Week or CMA Fest. Tin Pan South (March 24-28) is all about the songwriters, the men and women who craft the lyrics and melodies you’ve been singing along with for years. This event spreads out through venues across the city and keeps its patrons on their toes. CMA Fest, though, is the biggest week in Nashville when it comes to music and will be June 4-7 this year. The biggest names are in town to perform and make appearances at stages all over town, including huge headliners at Nissan Stadium and Ascend Amphitheater. From the smallest dive to the stage of Bridgestone Arena, Nashville’s music scene has something to offer for everyone. The only disappointment is that you can’t see it all. You’ll get the chance to say you knew them when or, just maybe, you’ll get to tell your friends you met a superstar. This is Nashville, and music is what we do.

Sightseeing in Nashville Middle Tennessee’s natural beauty brings visitors from around the world. And for the sightseer, Nashville has just the thing you’re looking for when you want to make beautiful memories and nail that perfect selfie for Instagram. Whether it’s history, nature, or art, Nashville is sure to please. If you want to get a good sense of Nashville and of this region, starting at the beautiful new Tennessee State Museum (1000 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.) gives visitors perspectives on Tennessee from the prehistoric period to statehood, through the Civil War and struggle for Civil Rights, and brings you through to the present day. Admission is free! They can also help arrange free tours of the State Capitol Building, a gorgeous Greek-revival temple atop Capitol Hill.
While you’re in that vicinity, be sure to take a stroll through the Nashville Farmers Market (900 Rosa L. Parks Blvd) and through the grounds of the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. With unparalleled views of the State Capitol Building, this area is a perfect way to spend a morning, grab a bite to eat, and let your social media friends know how cool Nashville is. Speaking of those killer Instagram pictures, Nashville’s plentiful murals are located all around the city and will take you off the beaten path. Some of the best known are to be found through Germantown, The Gulch, in the 12 South neighborhood, and along Gallatin Avenue in East Nashville. ture smile for your friends around the world. Right near downtown, you’ll find the Frist Art Museum (919 Broadway) and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum (222 Fifth Ave. South). The Frist offers a rotating lineup of traveling fine arts exhibitions while the Country Music Hall of Fame is the living archive of the history of Nashville’s truly American artform. Dotted through downtown are several smaller museums dedicated to individual pioneers in country music. The George Jones (128 Second Ave. North), The Johnny Cash Museum and Cafe (119 Third Ave. South), and The Patsy Cline Museum (located on the second level of the Johnny Cash Museum) all pay tribute to these legends. The Parthenon (2500 West End Avenue) is a must-see for any Nashville visitor. Located in Midtown’s Centennial Park, The Parthenon is the only full-size replica of the original in Athens. While Nashville isn’t often called “The Athens of the South” these days, this Grecian temple to Athena proudly stands testament to the city’s history and to the 1897 Centennial Exhibition. Take a stroll through the park, especially on the weekends of the Tennessee Craft Fair, where local and regional artisans sell their creations. Nashville has its fair share of historic homes. President Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage (4580 Rachel’s Lane, Hermitage, TN 37076) and Belle Meade Plantation (110 Leake Ave.) provide insights into Nashville’s antebellum past. Not to be missed is Cheekwood Estate and Gardens (1200 Forrest Park Drive). The 55-acre estate features a Georgian-style mansion housing an art museum and a botanical garden covering most of the grounds. While there is no official battlefield park to commemorate
36
the Civil War Battle of Nashville, Fort Negley (1100 Fort Negley Blvd.) and several locations south of downtown mark the locations of the 1864 battle. Several historical markers detail the bloody two-day battle. Further details can be found from the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society online. If being one with nature is more your idea of a good time, Radnor Lake State Park (1160 Otter Creek Road) should rank near the top of your destinations while in Nashville. More than six miles of trails wind through this 1300+ acre park located only nine miles from downtown. Abundant wildlife, the mirror-like lake, and incredible vistas provide a quiet place to unwind after a night singing karaoke in a juke joint. Finally, for a moment of contemplation upon recent history, two sites in downtown Nashville offer insights into the city’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Public Library (615 Church St.) educates its visitors on the struggle as lived by the African American citizens of Nashville up to and through the 1960s. And to see one of the main places where the Movement played out, Woolworth on 5th (221 Fifth Ave. North) is a modern restaurant located in an original Woolworth’s five and dime store. In the winter of 1960, sit-in protests were staged at the Woolworth’s lunch counter. By May of 1960, the luncheon counters had been desegregated, making Nashville the first major Southern city to begin the process of making its public facilities open to all. Nashville has been on the map since 1779 and we’ve packed a lot of history into these past 241 years. Tie up the laces on your walking shoes and get started. You’ve got a lot of territory to cover!

Nashville Pride
Nashville Pride is truly an institution for the LGBT community not only in Nashville but all of Middle Tennessee. Until recent years, it was the only Pride festival within a hundred miles, and provided a rare refuge for those who wanted to come into the city and be out and gay for a day or a weekend. Now there are Pride festivals in Nashville suburbs, and small cities further out, but Nashville
38
Pride is still a star, as Tennessee’s largest LGBTQ-focused event. Recent years have seen Pride extend it’s footprint around Public Square park, expanding to accomodate dozens of additional vendors, and the event was extended to include Sundays. But last year saw the return of a fan favorite, something many in Nashville have been asking for for years: a Pride PARADE!
