Torrey DeVitto Photographer RYAN WEST OBSCURAE Hello Torrey how are you? TORREY Good, thank you. OBSCURAE What got you started in your career? TORREY I have had a love for performing since I was a child. I grew up playing violin, which was the first thing to put me in the arts. However, I attribute my love for acting to Les Miserable. I saw the play on Broadway for the first time when I was about 7 and fell in love with it. I wanted to be Eponine and would perform all of her parts for anyone who would watch in the handmade costume my mom sewed for me. I even made my dad play the role of Marius a couple of times. I was committed. OBSCURAE Did you see yourself being an actress when you grew up? TORREY I don’t think I knew how to define what I loved to do growing up. Violin was so much the focus of everything I did that I assumed that was where my path would take me, playing in an orchestra somewhere. But once

I landed into an acting class at age 15, it all became very clear to me. Like, “Oh! This is what I want to do.” OBSCURAE How did you get prepared to be an actress? TORREY I had started modeling and a photographer suggested acting classes to my mom as a way to “open me up” and make me less shy. Thank God she made that suggestion because I knew I didn’t love modeling but luckily for me, that thing that I didn’t love to do turned out to be my segue into what I really love to do. OBSCURAE What is it like being on set? TORREY It depends on the day. Some days are really hard, some days are exciting and challenging. Most days I leave feeling completely artistically gratified and in love with what I do, and some days I leave feeling terrified like I have no idea what I am doing. But every day without fail, I come to set and leave set knowing there is nothing else in the world I would rather do. On Chicago Med we have an easy and loving set. Everyone gets along and we all really enjoy each other’s company. In that sense, it is Obscurae Magazine Volume 34on.// Winter the easiest set I have ever worked We share Issue a lot of2018 laughter!

Page 53

OBSCURAE How do you get yourself prepared for a role? TORREY It depends on the role. Getting to know the character is the most important part. Getting to know their habits, likes and dislikes, how they speak and walk, and what they would wear are all a part of the process. I spend time getting inside their head, understanding why they do the things that they do in the script, or say the things they say, and if they specialize in something, I get to know that specialty too. I like to take classes in whatever it is or work with someone on it. But every character is different, as is every process. I dont think I have had the same process for any of the characters I have played.

TORREY I do a lot of work with PETA and Humane Society of the United States. I have been a vegetarian for about 9 years now and I am vegan in my fashion and beauty products. Living a cruelty free life for me, the best that I can, is very important to me, and if sharing my experience or tips on ways I honor that commitment inspires someone else to try it out, then I will feel like I’ve done something right. I also do Hospice work. I started volunteering for Hospice doing inpatient care and through that became NHPCOs spokesperson and ambassador. Hospice work changed my life. Volunteering with Hospice and meeting the patients I would get to interact with gave my life so much purpose, got me out of my head and definitely keeps me grounded. There is such a negative connotation that goes along with hospice and I feel it’s important to speak out and make people more aware of the benefits of hospice and why volunteering is so important. Death to me is just another form of the birthing process. You’re being birthed into whatever is next and no one should have to experience that alone. As a hospice volunteer, you are with those people who don’t have family or friends around them while they are dying and it is your position to provide them with comfort and care and give them the space and support to pass on with love, dignity and respect.

“I will always hold a sweet place in my heart for Nanny Carrie, the role I got to play on One Tree Hill. It was the first time I felt I was able to play a role that gave me the space to really dive into something and let go.”

OBSCURAE Is there a difference between acting for a television series, or film? TORREY Yes. TV is much longer. When you do a film you are only there for a month or up to 6 months. With film you develop this character and then you let it go when it’s over. With TV, if you are doing the same character for years, the role innately sticks with you for longer. OBSCURAE Which role was the most difficult to act out? TORREY I think playing Melissa on Pretty Little Liars was the most difficult for me. Since my character was so in and out and because everyone on set had to be so secretive about storylines getting out, I always felt like it was hard for me to get a grasp on who she was and what she was doing. I always felt like I would figure her out and then I would read another script where she would do something completely out of left field and think, “Had I known that, I may have played her differently this entire time.” What I was reading sometimes didn’t match up with who I understood her to be. OBSCURAE Which role was the most enjoyable or rewarding? TORREY I will always hold a sweet place in my heart for Nanny Carrie, the role I got to play on One Tree Hill. It was the first time I felt I was able to play a role that gave me the space to really dive into something and let go. OBSCURAE I noticed when youre off set you put a lot of energy into amazing things like charities, can you tell us more about that?

OBSCURAE Can you tell us about your aspirations, what do you dream of accomplishing in the future?

OBSCURAE Can you tell us about what projects you are working on and what you plan on doing in the future?

TORREY I would love to just continue to create and do what makes me feel challenged and most of all, happy. But who knows what the future will hold? As long as whatever I am doing is causing me to learn and grow and coming from a place of love and integrity, then I will know that I am doing something right.

TORREY I am currently producing and starring in a short film that will be shot over the holidays and I have a couple other things in the works at the moment.

OBSCURAE In what way do you see yourself expanding your career? TORREY I have started to, and would love to tip my hat more in producing.

ABOUT DZHUS DZHUS is a conceptual womenswear brand launched in 2010 by Ukrainian designer and stylist Irina Dzhus. Avant-garde yet utilitarian, DZHUS is known for innovative cut, multifunctional transformer garments and austere industrial aesthetics. Inspired by the complex structure of the ambient, Irina Dzhus generates unique experimental constructions. Short-listed for the International Woolmark Prize in 2015, DZHUS present their collections during Ukrainian Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and International Fashion Showcase in London. DZHUS vegetarian-friendly clothing is stocked at concept stores in the USA, Austria, Japan, China, Australia, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine and sold online worldwide. DZHUS’ customer is a nonconformist intellectual in search of the perfect shell for her unique inner world. The brand has been featured in the top international media: Vogue, Dazed&Confused, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Elle, Elle Decoration, Cosmopolitan, L’Officiel, Noi.Se, Dash, Remark, Status, Jute, Giuseppina, Lucy’s, Dezeen. com and many more.

SS18 “ARCHAEA” COLLECTION DZHUS’ Spring/Summer 2018 line unveils the designer’s secret passion: palaeontology. Having explored the phenomenon of generation and development of life on Earth for years, simultaneously with her patternmaking experiments, Irina Dzhus has eventually come up with unique zoomorphic silhouettes and geologic textures of the “Archaea” collection. The conceptual cut of the multifunctional transformer garments pays honour to fossils of ammonites and trilobites, evolution of charnia and arthropleura, long-gone Carbon and Ordovician. Along with the biological leitmotif, the collection carries an association with the scientific avant-garde of late 19th – early 20th centuries, appealing to the Victorian aesthetics as well as laboratory uniforms. DZHUS’ Spring/ Summer line features a vast variety of edgy yet exquisite textiles: crushed silk, mélange linen, sheer crepe, finest woollen gauze, cotton with a distressed effect. Traditionally, DZHUS have used alternative fabric finishes, accentuating the technological background of their design.

Latin Heritage Meets High Fashion To many, the Artist known as El Topo, namely Antonio Caban Vale is revered as the father of Modern Latin Music. Whose grass roots folk music influence over Puerto Rico has engendered such an extensive and world renown music culture. Now after ten years away his return to the American heartland was commemorated with a fashion and arts presentation celebrating this heritage as it tells the story of our modern everyday experiences. As we experienced first-hand how fragile the physical structures of as they were decimated in the wake of Hurricane Maria’s toll on the island. Its’s a sobering reminder to appreciate our history and roots and honor our elders while their presence is still manifest. Honoring and being molded by the experiences and lessons of the past gives us the strength to stand tall and pride ourselves on our identity and set goals based on a self-determined path. We also see this strength expressed in the super-heroine and Wonder-Women vibe in the styling of each look of this fashion presentation.

Beauty comes in all shade’s, and for some of us, some of the most beautiful shade’s come from the continent of Africa. From its luscious green terrain, to its exotic Oceans winding rivers, unique food and lively language, Africa may be one of the places you might want to put on your travel list. Shades of the of the motherland was created by local Chicago based photographer Tarerus Moore to raise money to send school supplies to improvised children in Africa, while raising awareness about underfunded schools and the importance of education. In a time of high censorship, racial tension, and scapegoats, often everyday people get swept under the rug, especially the poor and disfranchised and above all children, but this 36-year old Charming publisher/photographer doesn’t shy away from using his camera to shed light on sensitive social issues. “I wanted to use the power of fashion and beauty to deliver my message, and who better to deliver that message other than black women, their beauty is always being used to exploit them sexually but instead why not use that beauty to educate. A women’s beauty will force you to look at her and African fashion imposes its power with bright vibrant colors both command attention. The project highlights factual information on the continents lack of educational resources and the disparity teaches and students face on a daily basis Moore says. “Did you know almost 60 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa between 15-17 are not in school? Or that half the population of Africa lives of $1 dollar a day most of don’t know that the price of a $20 pizza could fund 280 paper note books for a small school”

For him this is a actual dream job teaming up with international Florida based designer Agnes Weinert who’s garments Camerica creations focus on fusion of African prints and different fabrics from all around the world giving the wearer a feel and connection to the motherland. “ I’m so grateful that she wanted to with me on this project and help make my vision come to life her garment are the embodiment of todays diverse women very time I see a person wear her clothes they can’t stop smiling. Mr. Moore focuses mostly on working with aspiring models the fashion and entertainment industry due to the fact his brand of photography communication to an organic audience. “I don’t know what it is but people have been gravitating towards my work the love it especially women, ‘Im very hard on them when working together on the set but I force them to tap into their inner strength and coach them not to be afraid to express themselves but to remove fear of judgment and to become free and create from the heart and that is what I capture” Whether its saving the world or challenging the status quo of the industry: We all have a responsibility to make the world a better place says Tarerus. “it’s our duty”

It’s pretty apparent that the young visionary has been doing his homework using his advertising and marketing skill to make the message hit home with Americas audience. Growing up in a tough city like Chicago Tarerus understands what it’s like to struggle and to depend on the kindness of others. “Chicago is a cold city and sometimes the people can be even colder there a lot of poverty everywhere homeless people on the trains, people begging for food right in front of restaurants, so is a blessing to Obscurae Magazine Volume 34 // Winter Issue 2018 come across a person with a warm heart I know firsthand”
