rovincial elections results have brought changes to Limpopo’s political landscape and the emergence of a force the ruling party never had to reckon with before. For any party the loss of four seats in the Legislature would have been a defeat hard to admit to, but the reality of
the sudden rise of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as their new opposition simultaneously presents an ideological war the African National Congress (ANC) in the province would have to come to terms with. Adding insult to injury for a seemingly unperturbed ruling party is the fact that their recently introduced nemesis used to be considered one of their own,
someone who knows their fibre, has the power of conviction and made a comeback with a message appealing to mass groupings. The EFF’s secondary dominance with a secured 10,74% of votes, after the ANC’s 78,60% marginal win that secured them a four-seat drop to 39 Legislature slots, has reportedly sparked growing interest in the new kid on the block. Since elections
results have been formalised they were inundated with requests for membership forms from individuals who anxiously awaited their performance before finally joining the party, claimed EFF Provincial Convenor Michael Mathebe. He spoke to Polokwane Observer upon announcing the names of the eight members to represent the EFF in the Legislature and To page 2

Municipality extends valuation roll inspection T
he large number of issues and concerns raised about the General Valuation Roll resulted in the Polokwane Municipality’s decision to extend the public inspection period of the roll to 23 June. Property owners and other persons affected by or having interest in the valuation roll still have just over a month to participate in the process. Polokwane Municipality’s Communications
and Marketing Manager Tidimalo Chuene said the municipality received high volumes of questions regarding the valuation roll. “Even during the recent public participation session on the draft 2014/15 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and budget, residents expressed their concerns on the valuation roll as well as the deadline soon to be reached. Executive Mayor Freddy Greaver
thought it would be best to extend the deadline in order for residents and property owners to be given sufficient time to inspect the roll,” she explained. Spokesperson for the municipality Malesela Maubane said that the extended deadline for inspection of the valuation roll will grant affected people sufficient time to properly inspect the valuation roll and raise their objections.

More schools report textbook shortage >> DBE has violated learners’ basic rights WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com
A
s the deadline of 6 June looms for the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Limpopo Education Department (LED) to deliver in excess of 150 000 outstanding textbooks to 39 schools in the province, reports have filtered through that some schools still have no textbooks with the mid-year examinations fast approaching. Reports have been received by Polokwane Observer that learners at three schools in the Kgapane area in the Mopani district still have not received textbooks and learner support materials for the 2014 academic year. These schools are allegedly not among the 39 named in the court application and the names of the schools have been withheld for fear of victimisation. In delivering judgment in the
Limpopo textbooks court matter in the Gauteng North High Court last week, Judge Neil Tuchten said the DBE had violated learners’ rights to education by failing to ensure that all of them had their textbooks before the beginning of the 2014 academic year. The community-based organization Basic Education for All (Befa) earlier this year took the DBE to court, supported by civil rights group Section 27 because not all learners in Limpopo had received their textbooks for 2014. They also want the department to come up with a workable solution to prevent the future non-delivery of textbooks, for the Human Right Commission to oversee the process and for the court to declare the non-delivery of textbooks is a violation of the constitutional right of every child in South Africa to a basic education. The Spokesperson for LED, Pitsi Maloba insisted the non-delivery of textbooks to certain schools in the province is due to the failure of principals at the affected schools to order top-up books that were lost the previ-
ous academic year. He added that the delivery of the outstanding textbooks mentioned in the high court judgment is on schedule and more than 50% complete. Maloba commented that officials from LED visited some of the 39 schools listed by Section 27 and Befa and found no irregularities. He blamed the principals and those responsible for ordering and reporting textbook shortages for the non-delivery at the schools mentioned in the court application. The communications officer for Befa, Tebogo Sephakgamela said the organisation is not surprised to hear of more schools in Limpopo experiencing textbook shortages as the LDE and DBE has always been in a state of denial and passing of the buck. “I hope the departments will keep their promise and all outstanding learning material will be delivered by 6 June,” Sephakgamela commented and added that Befa will be monitoring the situation closely, leading up to the deadline.
Calls for return of Nigerian schoolgirls
YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com
As the world anxiously awaits news on the rescue mission of tens of Nigerian schoolgirls reportedly abducted en masse by Boko Haram in mid-April, the Muslim community in Polokwane has added their voices to scores of others from across the globe. The fate of the girls who were reportedly abducted from a secondary school in Chibok in Borno State a month ago, has caught the attention of the world. Amid concerns over their safety, specialists from across the world have purportedly been converging in Abuja to lend assistance to Nigeria. Back home social media followers have joined the
international community in highlighting the plight of the girls in updates containing pleas for the safe return of the abducted group. In a statement received at the time of going to press the Muslim Community of Polokwane condemned what they referred to as the senseless and horrific abduction of several hundred Nigerian schoolgirls - both Christian and Muslim - by armed terror group Boko Haram. “Their activities have been condemned by Nigeria’s Muslim communities themselves who, in turn, have been the target of this group. Boko Haram’s actions are in direct conflict with Islamic teachings and basic human rights. Forcing girls who are not Muslim to don the Islamic
garb and pray as Muslims do, oppose the directive of the Holy Quran which clearly states ‘Let there be no compulsion in faith’. Their actions are therefore born of a mental illness or they are serving an ulterior political agenda.” In their statement they urged authorities in Nigeria to do everything within their power to return the girls to their families and administer justice to the perpetrators of the evil crime. “Furthermore, we urge a complete investigation into revealing who these Boko Haram devils masquerading as Muslims really are.”

Hangwani Mulaudzi said during a routine inspection a dog handler requested to search a suspicious looking black Audi and found a parcel wrapped inside a black plastic bag. “The bag was allegedly hidden inside the armrest of the vehicle. Building rubble dumped on public land situated at the corner of Marshall and Gen Joubert streets by builders renovating a building across the street.
Dumped building rubble on municipal land a concern RC Myburgh >>rc.observer@gmail.com Renovations to a building in Gen Joubert Street have business owners and residents in the vicinity annoyed mainly because workers on the project use adjacent municipal land to dump building rubble, mix cement and store excess sand and other building materials. Not only is this an eyesore but the legality of using a public space for the purpose is also being questioned. The open space is situated at the corner of Marshall and Joubert and the work has been ongoing for more than a month with the builders now finalising minor touches to the interior of the building.
Motorists on numerous counts have had to consider hosepipes extending across the road to the cement mixing pit. Owner of the building, Temba Moshaba said the dumping of rubble is not a big problem and he would arrange to have it removed by yesterday (Wednesday) or today (Thursday). “The two heaps of remaining sand will be removed next week,” he said. Municipal Spokesperson Malesela Maubane said: “Anyone building can keep rubble as long as it does not encroach on the road, disturb traffic in the process and is not kept for more than seven days on site. On the particular issue we will dispatch one of our building inspectors to establish the actual situation.”

Elusive armed robbers nabbed by Limpopo Police
>> Not a happy election day for five armed robbers
KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com The election-centred Police operations did not only ensure safe and peaceful voting across Limpopo but it also managed to bring to an end the reign of a group of five armed robbers who have been terrorising Limpopo for months. The suspects will appear before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of armed robbery, possession of suspected stolen goods and the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo Police said the gang of five suspects who terrorised the Mahwelereng area were “outplayed and outwitted” by a group of determined detectives who traced them to their hide-out and arrested them on the spot. He explained that the suspects were in the habit of terrorising business
owners in the Mokopane area by robbing them of cash, air-time and groceries. The suspects usually operated in a group with two members of the gang entering the shop and pretending to buy something. The others then entered and pointed a firearm at the owner before tying up workers and the owner up with ropes and ransacking the entire shop before fleeing in vehicles. “Continued and thorough investigations by the detectives led the Police to a house at Sekgagapeng on Wednesday evening. The suspects were surprised and Police managed to arrest all five members of the gang whilst recovering several stolen goods as well as two firearms and two vehicles,” Mulaudzi said. He added that the suspects have already been linked to more cases of armed robbery reported in the Matlala area and the investigations have also pointed to the possibility of their involvement in other unsolved cases across Limpopo. Limpopo Police will also intensify the search for finding where the confiscated weapons and vehicles were stolen or bought from.
Armed robbers court update The five alleged armed robbers accused of terrorising communities in the Limpopo area appeared before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of armed robbery and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Solomon Kekana (23), Pleasure Manyike (23), Samson Mkatswa (32), Phetole Molewa (23) and Dominic Rabotsho (28) all appeared briefly before the court where after their cases were remanded to 23 May for further investigation. All the suspects will remain in custody. They were cornered on Election Day following an in-depth investigation by the Limpopo Police who traced them and their crime spree for months.
ATM dangers once again do the rounds
What used to be an easy way of accessing cash, using an ATM in a Polokwane convenience store, has over time become more of a challenge and safety hazard than anything else. The owner of Sasol Bendor, Johan Potgieter, said he has noticed with alarm that what appear to be syndicates have found various ways to get ATM users’ secret pins. Following various complaints regarding safety surrounding ATMs and in particular late night transactions, Lesiba Ramoshaba from the Polokwane Police thought it best to recap some basic tips. One of the most important is that people should never seek or accept assistance from strangers. “No matter how these strangers look or what they drive they might end up robbing you of your hard earned cash,” Ramoshaba warned. He added that ATM users should never carry large amounts of cash, never write down pin numbers and never talk to strangers. “If ever you fall victim to such a crime, report the matter immediately. We will assist as fast as possible as we have strong ties within the banking sector,” Ramoshaba concluded.
Truck driver appears in Musina Court A 38-year-old truck driver, Robert Vaniseni Ndlovu appeared before the Musina Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) after he was arrested on Tuesday for smuggling illegal cigarettes worth more than R500 000 into the country. Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo Police says the man, a Zimbabwean national, was on his way from Zimbabwe to South Africa when he was apprehended at the Beitbridge Border post and arrested on the spot after the cigarettes were found in the truck he was driving. The suspect has been granted bail of R5 000 bail and the case has been remanded until 30 May for further investigation.
Vorster case postponed Local psychiatrist Barend Vorster this week appeared before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to the alleged sexual assault of minors who were also his patients. The case was postponed to early in June when he will face charges that stem from the alleged over-prescription of patients from 2009 until his arrest on 25 November 2010. Ronel Otto from the Limpopo Police says the case will resume again in June.

n earlier interdict preventing Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe to apply Section 139(1) b of the constitution on Mogalakwena Municipality was set aside in the Northern Gauteng High Court last Friday meaning that the municipality is effectively under administration. Coghsta welcomed the court ruling as it will assist in addressing serious challenges facing the municipality. In March Kgetjepe announced the decision taken by the Executive Council of Limpopo Government and that an administrator was soon to be appointed. Mr Dikgape Makobe was appointed as administrator and has since assumed his responsibilities as Head of Administration at the Mogalakwena Municipality. A press release issued by departmental Spokesperson Motupa Selomo referred to Makobe as an
old hand in the sphere of local government, administration in general and the Mogalakwena Municipality in particular. Makobe worked as municipal manager for seven years, at the South African Local Government Association (Salga) for two years, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Limpopo Legislature for another two years respectively. “We hope that his experience of all these years in various institutions will go a long in addressing the challenges faced by the municipality. He has been appointed as administrator for six months,” Selomo said. He said among other that Makobe’s duties will include undertaking all fiscal and financial management functions, ensure that the provisions of the duties of the provincial executive are realised, advise council on all policy matters, review all systems and policies, develop a turn-around strategy, implement a system to control and approve all expenditure and implement proper financial systems, policies and procedures. He will report in writing on a monthly basis to Kgetjepe on the progress and performance of the municipality. “We hope all stakeholders will give Makobe the necessary cooperation as he will be striving to stabilise the affairs of the municipality and we look forward to work closely with him to assume his responsibilities as administrator,” Selomo said.

Noko Ngoepe receives the Mediclinic Limpopo Nursing Excellence Award from Dalene de Villiers, Nursing Manager at Mediclinic Limpopo.
Mediclinic Limpopo joins Nurses Day celebrations Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com International Nurses Day was celebrated by Mediclinic Limpopo with a scrumptious breakfast on Monday morning culminating with the clinic’s annual Nursing Excellence Award for commitment to the spirit of nursing. International Nurses Day is a global tribute to the nursing profession and held on 12 May to coincide with Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Mediclinic Limpopo joined the international nursing community to take the opportunity to recognise the role that nursing practitioners play in their patient-centred culture. Monday was the 49th occasion that International Nurses’ Day was commemorated. Speaking via video link from Cape Town Estelle Jordaan, Nursing Executive for Mediclinic South Africa said: “This year we want to honour our shining lights and celebrate our nurses for being experts in their fields and for how they apply their knowledge and expertise to ensure patient safety and comfort. It is also a
day where a nursing practitioner at each hospital is chosen for the Nursing Excellence Award by his or her peers and patients. “Although we can only select one person at every Mediclinic hospital, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge each of our nursing practitioners for their invaluable contribution to enhancing the quality of life of our patients by providing comprehensive world-class care,” Jordaan concluded. Male nurse, Noko Ngoepe was the Nursing Excellence Award winner for Mediclinic Limpopo in 2014 for going that extra mile for his patients and his helpful demeanour with the doctors and all his nursing colleagues. Nursing Manager at Mediclinic Limpop, Dalene de Villiers congratulated Ngoepe and said he clearly understands the three important nursing principles applied at Mediclinic, namely treat people like you would like to be treated; treat people like they want to be treated and thirdly treat others like they won’t be expected to be treated by anticipating their needs and exceeding their expectations.

he National Youth Development Agency (Nyda) will launch today (Thursday) during a provincial conference in Polokwane the provincial chapter of the Youth Chamber of Commerce & Industries in South Africa (YCCISA). YCCISA is an all embracing youth business structure which seeks to unite and mobilise all young entrepreneurs under one roof irrespective of their colour and social backgrounds. Its key mandate is to ensure that young people in business are able to participate in the country‘s policy discourse and the transformation of different sectors of the economy, including energy, petroleum, mining, agribusiness and tourism. The Limpopo Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LYCC&I) has already established regional and functional structures in all five municipal districts. LYCC&I Provincial Convenor Wesley Maringa said the conference will take place under the theme ‘Breaking the new grounds for youth entrepreneurship in Limpopo’. “The LYCC&I has identified various partners and stakeholders who will grace the occasion. These include mining houses; parastatals that deal with funding and business support functions provincially and nationally; government departments and local municipalities as well as private sector organisations. We invited these institutions be-
cause we want to help aspiring entrepreneurs in the province. Most of them are unable to start their businesses because they don’t have the necessary information,” Maringa said. He added that they have invited Premier Stan Mathabatha and MEC for Economic Development and Environment and Tourism, Seaparo Sekoati to the event. “The Premier will give a presentation on the provincial road map for youth development and Sekoati will outline the state of youth enterprise development and support,” Maringa concluded.

Arms for Africa celebrates 21 years of excellence BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com
T
he oldest firearms dealer in Limpopo, Arms for Africa celebrates its 21st year in business this year. Arms for Africa was opened in Nirvana by the late Dr Boris Brigljevic and his wife Renée during February 1993. The couple emigrated from Switzerland in 1992. Dr Brigljevic, an avid collector of firearms, brought more than 100 firearms registered in his name when he opened the shop. He saw a window of opportunity in the market since almost no one in South Africa knew the European firearm industry which provided the highest quality guns. After opening the shop, he was awarded the agencies for among others Blaser from Germany as well as Chapuis and Verney Carron from France. He also imported Lakefield (now Savage), VFG, RCBS and EasyHit sights. During 2007 Dr Brigljevic fell ill and scaled down the business. After his death Renée carried on with
the business with the assistance of Julius Van der Merwe, who is still employed by the business, but concentrated on the retail side only. She also introduced the Sniper clothing range on a small scale since space was always a problem. During 2010, Marius and Anina du Preez joined the business and combined it with their Legally Armed consulting franchise to ensure that the business could now expand and offer a one-stop solution for buyers and owners of firearms. New premises were purchased at 25 Excelsior Street in Polokwane CBD and opened its doors on 1 October 2010. The business was expanded and then also included bows and paintball equipment whilst the clothing section was expanded. The supplier section was also extended in order to allow for a more and wider variety of products at better prices. The vision of Arms for Africa is to supply its customers with a one-stop service in terms of all hunting and sport shooting gear and to be the preferred supplier of such gear in Limpopo.

ome of Limpopo’s most beautiful scenery is, due to rough terrain, often only within reach of 4x4 owners. But once you get
behind the steer of a Jeep Wrangler CRD you’ll have free reign to conquer the province’s most inaccessible territories. The Wrangler CRD shares the trademark bulkiness, strong designed lines and curves and legendary, seven slot grille of its predeces-
sors. With a Wrangler you can go anywhere with a do anything attitude as it is an extension of the classic, purpose-built design with round headlamps, exposed forged-aluminium hood latches, removable doors, fold-down windshield, fog lamps, robust fender flares, externally mounted spare tyre and soft or hardtop options. For everyone who loves living life outdoors, Wrangler is the ultimate expression of fun, freedom and adventure. The interior is almost the opposite from the exterior. Wrangler’s interior features soft touch materials and a quiet ride. Honouring Wrangler’s iconic legacy, the passenger grab handle features the phrase “Jeep, Since 1941”. Other niceties include heated front seats, automatic temperature control with cabin air filtration, steering wheel mounted audio controls and chromed auto transmission shifter. Revised front full-door inner sheet metal allowed Wrangler’s designers to give the door trim a smooth, organic feel with soft touch surfaces. In the senior quad category, defending champion Jurie Meyer Senior had to settle for second place after problems with his clutch. In the Silver Class Challenge where participants had to complete five of the six loops, Tzaneen quad rider Marcell Coetzee (Extreme ATV Tzaneen Yamaha) claimed his first victory of the season.

Make a calculated buying decision M
ention a bond affordability calculator and most people will automatically think of a bank or home loan provider. Today, bond affordability calculators are an important part of many financial institutions’ repertoire as they are often the first port of call for aspirant property buyers. Importantly such calculators also often act as the launch pad for the property purchase process. “Simply put, bond affordability calculators typically comprise a set of windows in which information such as the property price, gross and/or net monthly income, the duration of the loan, deposit, monthly expenses and interest rate can be inserted. Of course there are variations on the theme but this is the basic premise behind the concept. Generally speaking, once all these variables are factored in, the calculator will provide a loan amount and the required monthly repayment amount,” Executive Head of Sales and Client Value Management at Nedbank, Timothy Akinnusi said. Manage your expectations Akinnusi is quoted to have said that affordability is increasingly being used by those interested in purchasing property as they help people to manage their expectations. Through the calculations provided, prospective clients can ascertain straight off the bat whether or not they have a good chance of qualifying for a loan amount and how much they would need to pay back every month over a certain period of time. Akinnusi added that not only do these calculators provide the basis for affordability they

also serve to provide a fairly good idea of how much interest will be charged over the term of the home loan and the changes in the interest charged when there are future changes to the prime lending rate. All a prospective home buyer needs to do is adjust the interest rate and keep all other variables constant. Calculating future payments isn’t all just about the interest rate though. “As such, other factors can be integrated depending on the financial provider. For example, Nedbank now offers calculators that take into consideration factors such as lump sum payments, monthly repayment increases, shorter repayment periods, and annual percentage increases on repayments,” he said.
Be honest When using affordability calculators it’s also important to remember that the quality of the output from the calculators is only as good as the information they are given. If for example monthly expenses such as home insurance and rates and taxes are left out of the equation, the comprehensive cost of the home would not be accurately reflected by the calculator. “Of course nobody knows for certain what their financial situation will be in the future or what the interest rate will be – especially in the current uncertain economic climate. As such, we advise erring on the conservative side and building in as much as a buffer as possible by not taking the maximum amount allowed from
an affordability perspective. This will ensure that any future bond repayment increases can be comfortably absorbed.” Akinnusi further explained that it’s also best not to structure a home loan according to the maximum duration of 30 years as doing so doesn’t really leave any scope for restructuring the agreement if necessary. Likewise he advised against taking out a personal loan for a deposit as this effectively translates into a short-term loan, which attracts a higher interest charge being used to fund a long-term loan commitment. In doing so consumers can end up paying much more interest than they should on a home loan.

According to Sapa Yopa President Sarel Nong they have held annual charity drives in Mahwelereng, but in future would want to extend their efforts to other districts. On Saturday Zamokuhle Centre For The Disabled and Gundu Day Care Centre received groceries purchased with club funds, blankets courtesy of Vuki Chuene Tourism CC and Yamaha South Africa, toys that were a gift from Kia Motors in Mokopane as well as the Limpopo North Toy Run support base and a cash amount of an estimated R6 000 raised among their members and those representing other clubs across the country. Nong explained 210 motorcyclists were registered to participate in the mass ride, comprised by members from their own club as well as clubs in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West.

Miss Limpopo 2014 Kholofelo Lekganyane continues to touch people’s lives. As an eager philanthropist she manages to divide her time between her studies at the University of Limpopo and engaging in community projects aimed at uplifting the lives of others. While most people celebrated Worker’s Day by indulging in much deserved rest, Lekganyane spent her day visiting the Hope Drop-in Centre in Matseke village, Botlokwa. Apart from rendering a motivational talk of hope, encouragement and support, she also spent time with the children and donated clothes, fresh vegetables, food, books and lucky packets for the children. The centre caters for children aged 1 to 18 years and whose parents are unemployed or single. The children receive two meals per day from the centre.

ore than 300 excited faces joined in the fun of cricket on Saturday when KFC hosted another highly successful KFC Mini Cricket Festival at the Polokwane Cricket Club. This year’s festival specifically targeted a younger age group with pre-schools benefitting from the event. the game that might just help the sports bug bite the youngsters. Cheray van Blerk from KFC says it was the first festival of its kind to be presented on the KFC Mini Cricket calendar, not only in Limpopo but in the entire KFC group. A phenomenal 330 children from schools across Limpopo including Jungle Tots, Angels Play Pre-School, Little Blessings, Betshalom Christian School, Christian Achievers Academy, Kraaines PreSchool, Mickey and Minnie, Erica Pre-Primary School and Pemps took part in the day proudly sponsored by KFC Polokwane and Limpopo Impala Cricket. Van Blerk says KFC Polokwane was completely thrilled and overwhelmed with the fantastic response received from the participating schools as well as the children and parents who all ensured the success of the festival. She continued on and said that the main aim of the festival was to provide the game of cricket in its simplest form to all children from any background. “A mini-cricket set was also donated to all the participating schools consisting of four cricket stumps, four cricket bats and two balls, all proudly sponsored by KFC Polokwane and Limpopo Impala Cricket,” concluded van Blerk. Desiree Jacobs from Kraaines Pre-School thanked the sponsors and other role-players who played their respective parts behind the scenes and at the various pre-schools. Kraaines learners received a donation of sports kit from the Bent family from Sammy’s Autobody and Jacobs thanked them for their generosity.

National First Division play-offs favour Leopards Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za

lack Leopards Football Club will continue to fight hard despite carrying the tag of favourite ahead of the National First Division (NFD) play-offs set to start at Giyani Stadium on Sunday. This is according to the team’s spokesperson, Barry Ramunenyiwa. Leopards beat Jomo Cosmos 2-0 at Makhulong Stadium on Sunday to qualify for the playoffs, which will also involve Polokwane City Football Club and Milano United Football Club. The trio will play six matches home and away to determine the occupant of position 16 of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) which was vacated by Golden Arrows’ relegation to the NFD. Lidoda Duvha carries vast experience in the play-offs as it is not the first time they participate in the contest. In 2010 they took part in the promotional set up and were knocked out by Mpumalanga Aces who beat them in the final match to dent their hopes being promoted to the elite league. But they did not despair and bounced back in 2011 to beat Vasco Da Gama in the final match and win the play-offs.
“We are aware of the favourite tag given our history in the play-offs, but we should not get carried away. All the teams that will take part in the play-offs are fighting for a spot in elite league and they are also tough. We have no option but to win the play-offs and get back to the PSL. We are confident that we will do well and ensure that Limpopo has a team in the elite league next season,” Ramunenyiwa said. He also thanked the fans who travelled with the team on Sunday for their game against Jomo Cosmos. “We are forever grateful for their support. We had fans from all parts of the province at Makhulong Stadium and that was heart warming. We are also counting on their support during the period of play-offs,” Ramunenyiwa said. Baroka Football Club’s hopes of making it to the play-offs of the National First Division (NFD) were dealt a major blow when they drew 1-1 draw against Thanda Royal Zulu at old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. Baroka needed to win their fixture against Thanda in order to occupy the second position now occupied by Black Leopards who triumphed 2-0 against Jomo Cosmos. The 1-1 draw sees Baroka finishing the 2013/2014 National First Division in fourth position with 50 points after 30 matches. Baroka’s goal was scored by Kuduku Maleasenya and Mazwi Ncube equalised for Thanda in the second half of the match. “We wanted to go far in the league, but unfortunately our journey ended there. We are happy with the position that we find ourselves in. Remember this is our maiden NFD season and to finish fourth is an achievement for us,” Baroka Head Coach Sello Chokoe said. He also said that their focus is to build a strong team for next season. “We have to

And we appreciate every bit of support. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge enables club golfers anywhere in the country to do something positive and make a real impact through the game they love,” Sanlam Sponsorship Manager Gary van Loggerenberg was quoted to have said. Sanlam and Cansa have partnered the Sanlam Cancer Challenge since 1993. As a leading role player in cancer research, Cansa spends more than R6 million annually as the scientific findings and knowledge gained from the research is used to realign Cansa’s health programmes as well as strengthen its watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public.

Noko Ngoepe, a professional nurse at Mediclinic Limpopo is the hospital’s 2014 Nursing Excellence Award winner.

Noko Ngoepe sets high standards and wins Nursing Excellence Award Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com
A
fter working at Mediclinic Limpopo for just over a year, dedicated professional nurse Noko Ngoepe received the annual Nursing Excellence Award in recognition of his commitment to the spirit of nursing. It was only fitting that Ngoepe was awarded the coveted prize on International Nurses Day on Monday after being nominated by his peers and patients. Altogether 37 nursing personnel at Mediclinic Limpopo were in line to win the award but Ngoepe came out on top for his professional demeanour with both patients and his nursing colleagues. This father of two young daughters has always been passionate about caring for other people and those less fortunate. He chose nursing as a career because of the great feeling he gets when a healed patient leaves the hospital with their family and loved ones.
Polokwane Shop No.6 Lower Ground Level, Standard Bank Square, 50 Schoeman Street. Tel: 015 295 6484 / 5094 Fax: 086 674 5187 email: polokwane@jetline.co.za
Ngoepe started training as a professional nurse at Ekufundeni Training College in Silverton, Pretoria as an auxiliary nurse and also completed the enrolled nursing course the following year. He started his professional nursing career at the Louis Pasteur Private Hospital in Pretoria. The hardworking young man then furthered his nursing studies from 2009 to 2011 before returning to Louis Pasteur Private Hospital where he worked until February 2013. As he was born in Limpopo, Ngoepe applied for a nursing position in the surgical unit at Mediclinic Limpopo and has been working at the hospital since the beginning of March last year. “I am very privileged to be working at a professional hospital like Mediclinic Limpopo that sets high standards, has good facilities and is well managed and organised,” Ngoepe said. He describes working in the surgical unit at the hospital as challenging because you must always have the welfare of the patient as the number one priority both before and after the surgical procedure. “You need someone who can concentrate and have a sharp mind because you are dealing with patients who are going into theatre and coming out of theatre. Your mind should be fully focused on the patient without outside distractions as there are certain preparation procedures that must be taken care of before surgery. The first two hours after anaesthetic are also critical and the patient must be monitored closely during that period,” Ngoepe explained. Ngoepe firmly believes in the three important nursing principles that are practised at Mediclinic hospitals coun-

trywide. The most important being to treat the patient like you would expect to be treated if the roles were reversed. He also believes that you must share information on health care issues with the patient. “This is the reason I became a nurse because I like serving people and am always helping people in my community. The treatment patients receive from me must be the same that I expect from somebody else.” He believes the attributes of being a good nurse are that you must love your job, respect other people and your colleagues no matter if they are your junior or senior in order to enhance your working environment. You also need to be assertive in order to deal with patients and always have the best interest of the person in your care close to your heart, according to the awardwinner. Although he did not expect to win the award, Dalene de Villiers the Nursing Manager at Mediclinic Limpopo commented that Ngoepe is a deserving winner due to his great working relationship with all his colleagues, the doctors and patients at the health care facility. This dedicated nursing professional is always busy furthering his career and is studying towards an honours degree in Psychology at the University of South Africa.
