parks are expected to fly in the Legislature today (Thursday) when the Democratic Alliance (DA) is scheduled to re-introduce a no confidence motion against Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale following new revelations of alleged travel allowance abuse involving chartered helicopter flights. “The latest round of R82 000 spending on charted flights comes after Premier Mathale spent R641 410 on travel claims in the 2011/12 financial year. This was revealed by the DA’s questions in the Legislature’s public accounts committee late last year,” stated DA Limpopo Legislature Caucus Leader Desiree van der Walt in a media release received at the time of going to press. She said the DA would make a formal appeal to Speaker Rudolph Phala today to review his refusal to allow a DA motion of no confidence against Mathale to be debated last month. “According to media reports, Premier Mathale used taxpayers’ money to rent a helicopter for a trip between Polokwane and Musina in January at an estimated cost of R82 000. “In fact, the DA can confirm that Premier Mathale has been abusing his powers to take chartered helicopter flights since as early as 2011.” She continued stating: “The DA witnessed this abuse first-hand during Chief Kgoshi Maleboho’s inauguration ceremony on 14 May 2011 where Premier Mathale arrived in a helicopter instead of using state vehicles to attend the event.” Van der Walt labelled Mathale as a serial abuser of the law who cared very little about the need to use public funds for basic service delivery in Limpopo instead. “The money Premier Mathale blows on helicopter flights could have been used to purchase textbooks, increase norms and standards funds to schools or provide water and proper sanitation for the citizens of Limpopo.” She expressed conviction that the Speaker
now had no choice but to allow the no confidence debate to remove Mathale in the light of ongoing abuses. In response to an article in a daily newspaper on the matter, Head of Provincial Government Communications Tebatso Mabitsela labelled it another malicious article attempting to assassinate the character of the Premier in an open letter to the publication. The article, he said, was misleading and incorrect. “The Star repeats its unfounded allegation that “[the] official cars were parked – so that the Premier could use his private car and claim huge sums...his office flouted the policy on the use of official vehicle. It had disposed of his official car...before it reached 120 000km, or five years.” He continued saying it should be noted that the Office of the Premier was on record disputing the “ridiculous allegations” by the publication. It was ludicrous that the official vehicle was parked so that huge sums could be claimed and the vehicle in question was withdrawn as an official vehicle due to numerous mechanical damages and had travelled beyond 120 000 at the time it was disposed, according to Mabitsela. He said the newspaper further repeated its incorrect allegation that “the Premier [used] R111 000 of the taxpayers’ money to attend the Cape Town Jazz Festival, in apparent violation of the Ministerial Handbook, which justified entertainment only on official duties”. Accor-ding to him the Premier honoured a long standing official invitation when he embarked on the trip. He raised the opinion that it was incorrect and gross misrepresentation of facts to allege that he used state funds to pay for his stay in Cape Town subsequent to his official engagements. “Financial records show abundantly clear that the Premier paid for his accommodation in Cape Town notwithstanding the misleading allegations made by The Star previously and again today.” “On the use of helicopters, the Limpopo provincial government procured the services of a helicopter for the Premier out of necessity

and to suggest that it is wasteful is as disingenuous as it is outrageous.” He added it was absurd to expect that the Premier should fail to honour his obligations to serve the people of Limpopo by, among other things, not attending important occasions with various stakeholders. He continued saying that the newspaper conveniently obscured the fact that the helicopter was used during the floods that ravaged Limpopo during that time. “One wonders how the families which were adversely affected by the floods feel about The Star’s reportage. It insinuates that it was wasteful for the Premier to attend to their adversity! Ironically, this reportage is said to be in the public’s interest.” Referring to the publication alleging that the government spent R60 000 to rent a helicopter for a distance of 161km, which was deemed to be wasteful expenditure, he said the Premier had to officially open the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders at Ga-Mashashane, an occasion that was considered important because in line with the Constitution, the Premier had a duty to enhance the principle of Cooperative Governance and Intergovernmental Relations. He continued stating that it should be noted that the opening of the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders was scheduled to start at 10:00 that morning. Subsequently, the Premier had to attend the monthly Executive Public Participation Programme (Exco PPP) at Bungeni Village which started at 11:00 the same morning, he pointed out. The Exco PPP was designed to create a platform for community members to interact with Exco on service delivery matters, he said. Given the delight that was displayed by ordinary members of the public when the Premier eventually joined the community meeting, he said one wondered how they would feel about the reportage. “The Star made numerous allegations which in my view do not have to be dignified with a response but suffice to say the plot to pour scorn on the Premier has been exposed!” he concluded.

The case against the five Police officers accused of beating a Nigerian citizen to death was postponed by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court to tomorrow (Friday) when the bail application is set to be finalised. arrested at a friend’s house. His friend escaped the alleged assault. The accused allegedly stopped on the way to the Police station to buy water because Iwuaka was bleeding from his ears. An ambulance was supposedly called after he died. During their previous appearance the court also heard that Iwuaka was simply visiting his cousin and should not have been arrested. Although a stolen cell phone had been traced to the house, it was allegedly not in Iwuaka’s possession.

The Provincial Initiation Schools Task Team has sanctioned 142 initiation schools for the 2013 Koma season and is hoping for an incident free season, according the the team’s Chairperson, Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale who spoke during the official opening ceremony of the season on Friday. “Last year five deaths were reported by the various initiation schools in the province. That did not sit well with us so this season we are going all out to ensure that
we have an incident free period. In that regard we have roped in the Department of Health and Social Development as well as the South African Police Service to assist us in monitoring all the initiation schools,” Dikgale said. Although the turnout is low due to the fact that academic schools have not yet closed, Dikgale is adamant that the number will increase from next week. “In fact we are happy with the low turnout. This is a clear indication that despite the cultural practise, parents prioritise education more than anything else,” he said.

ie Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) se droom om die provinsie se eerste Astrohokkiebaan te bou word binnekort ‘n werklikheid. Grondwerk het Dinsdag op die skoolterrein begin het toe Jakarandabome om die D-hokkieveld tussen Dorp- en Voortrekkerstraat afgekap en mure afgebreek is. “Jakarandabome is uitheems. Ons het reeds ‘n ooreenkoms met ‘n myn wat dié bome gratis verwyder en die hout gebruik. Dié bome se wortelstelsels en blare kan die nuwe baan verniel en moes verwyder word,” sê PHS-skoolhoof, mnr Willie Shoeman. Hy sê verder die skool het reeds ‘n deposito van R2,25 miljoen betaal en kontrakteurs sal op 1 Julie met konstruksie begin. “Die Astrobaan het nou realiteit geword, maar ons het steeds die ondersteuning van die gemeenskap nodig om aaneenlopende konstruksie te
verseker. Ons sal nog gereeld geldinsamelings hou om die konstruksie te befonds.” Die baan sal waarskynlik teen die einde van September voltooi wees. Die projekbestuurder, mnr Louis Scott het gesê die kontrakteurs sou gister (Woensdag) vir die eerste keer die terrein besoek. “Dit is ‘n groot taak om die grondwerk in orde te kry omdat die kontrakteurs ook net die beste produkte van internasionale gehalte gebruik.” Schoeman het gesê verskeie toernooie sal in die toekoms op die baan aangebied word. Die skool sal ook onderhandel om internasionale wedstryde en moontlik toernooie aan te bied. donateurs en elke persoon wat lief is vir hokkie nie. Ons het wel nog ‘n lang pad om te stap voordat die baan voltooi is en borge is welkom om betrokke te raak,” sê Schoeman. All eleven objections to the proposed Motor City project have been dealt with, the Executive Mayor of Polokwane, Cllr Freddy Greaver declared in his State of the City address last week. The controversial Motor City project by the Polokwane Municipality is set to get the go-ahead in the 2013/14 financial year. Environmental issues were among the initial objections raised about the project. At the start of the tender process, allegations were made that the company appointed by the municipality to develop the site had been registered only ten days before the tender was advertised.
The proposed Motor City development will be located adjacent to the current Thornhill Shopping Centre on the vacant land between Ster Park and the shopping centre. According to Greaver, the proposed development has the potential to create employment opportunities and to further generate a sustainable income for the city. Greaver went on to say that the completed Motor City project will remain the ownership of the Polokwane Municipality and is one of the best ever deals negotiated by the municipality. “Once it has been completed, the entire project has the potential to generate approximately R500 million per annum in revenue,” Greaver

explained. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has also given the project the green light after expressing their initial reservations about the validity of the negotiations around the project. DA Councillor for the Polokwane Municipality, Mr Frank Haas says the DA has always considered the Motor City development as a good idea as long as all the necessary negotiations were done according to the book and are not a contravention of the municipal by-laws. “After receiving allegations of irregular procedures being followed during the initial discussions for the project, the DA intervened, but now that there are no further objections the DA has given the project the goahead,” said Haas.
A new tendency among criminals seems to be to rape their female victims first before robbing them. The latest incident of this nature occurred in Hoog Street on Saturday morning when an elderly woman (74) was raped before being robbed. The rate at which these crimes are committed is also on the increase with cases recently reported to have happened in Potgieter Avenue, Suid Street, Eduan Park and Welgelegen.
Makhado coal project to produce 12,6 mil tonnes per annum for 16 years Coal of Africa Limited yesterday announced the results of a feasibility study at its flagship Makhado coking coal project in a JSE Sens report. Makhado is Coal’s anchor project in the Soutpansberg coalfield with an estimated gross tonnes in the order of 8 billion. Highlights of the feasibility study include • 12,6 million tonnes per annum Run of Mine which is expected to produce 2,3 million tonnes per annum (tpa) of hard coking coal and 3,2 million tpa of thermal coal. • Favourable Internal Rate of Return of 30,1% (unleveraged) and a Net Present Value of R6,79 billion (US$697m) at a real discount rate of 8%. • Mineable tonnes in-situ (MTIS) of 344,8 million tonnes. • 16 year Life of Mine (LOM) at a mine average gate cost of R865 (US$88,71) per saleable hard coking coal tonne (after thermal coal by- product credit). • Capital expenditure of R3,96 billion (US$406,3m) including contingency. • Non-discounted peak funding requirement is R4,2 billion (US$432,8m).

Polokwane Police Spokesperson, Capt Ntobeng Phala confirmed that at 05:00 on Saturday a man gained entry to the home of an elderly couple in Hoog Street. “The intruder immediately grabbed the man (84), tied him up and locked him in the spare bedroom. He then repeatedly raped the woman before fleeing the scene with R500 and two cell phones,” Phala said. Polokwane Observer was informed that the victim was taken to Mankweng Hospital but had to be brought back as the Police did not want to follow the ambulance to take a statement. Phala denied the allegation and said members of the Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse Unit of the Police took the victim to Mankweng Hospital in a Police vehicle and took her statement there.

The statement further read that in the province for an example, the scheduled partnership will take shape in a form of already arranged inspections where the department’s inspectorate, together with the provincial leadership from organised labour will attend to one employer after another in the sector. It further stated that during inspections the focus will be on compliance with legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Equity Act the requirements of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

Die regering moet die grondwet respekteer en handhaaf of toegee aan druk van die vakbonde.” Intussen het die organisasie boere gemaan om hulle veiligheidsmaatreëls te verskerp in die lig van die dreigende arbeidsoptrede deur vakbonde en om onverdraagsaam te wees teen oproer of vandalisme wat lewe of eiendom bedreig. “Ons het as wetsgehoorsame burgers ook regte en ons het ook die reg om daardie regte te beskerm,” meen hy.

In ‘n persverklaring het die GPF dit duidelik gemaak dat vullisverbranding onwettig is en veldbrande kan veroorsaak. “Dit is winter en die veld is droog. The Department of Agriculture will host World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) at Ga-Kgatla Sports ground in the Blouberg area tomorrow (Friday). The theme of this year’s worldwide celebration is “Drought and water scarcity”. A statement released by the department states that Limpopo is among the country’s provinces most affected by land degradation
and therefore more public awareness should be created. Key issues to be highlighted include the sustainable use of soil and water in order to meet the needs of present and future generations; the planting of trees in degraded areas; urging communities to protect wetlands and springs and the promotion of stakeholder integration for environmental sustainability. All broken seats on the pavilion were also replaced. George Skordi passes away Well-known Polokwane resident and “patriarch of the local Greek community” George Skordi passed away over the weekend after a short illness. He was 88 years old. Skordi was born in Kormakitis in Cyprus and immigrated to South Africa in 1947, according to his family. He lived in Polokwane for the past 46 years. It took Skordi three months to sail from Cyprus to South Africa and he arrived with less than 10 pounds in his pocket, stated his family. However, within a few years he had his own business, had already bought his first home and was well on his way to becoming successful. When he moved to Polokwane he took over as the local bookmaker and he will be remembered as one of the longest operating bookmakers in the province, they said. Skordi never forgot his native Greek Island and would make regular trips to see his family and friends there. The local Greek community all loved him and considered him a father
figure, usually referring to him as ‘Papou’, the Greek word for grandpa. His generous hospitality to family and friends was legendary and visitors from across South Africa were always treated to home cooked meals and Greek delights while listening to his wonderful stories He is survived by his wife, Eftychia, children Marianna, Sophia and Angelo, ten grandchildren and a newly born great grandchild. A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Friday) at the Roman Catholic Cathedral on the corner of Biccard and Thabo Mbeki streets at 11:00. En hy het die mooiste hande gehad.” So het mnr Johan Zeelie, seun van mnr Martin Zeelie (65), Dinsdag oor sy pa gesels wat Sondag in Mediclinic Limpopo oorlede is nadat hy van Vrydagmiddag af nie lekker gevoel het nie. Sy afskeidsfunksie as uittredende takbestuurder van Buco was net ‘n week vroeër. Martin het 33 jaar gelede in Potchefstroom in die boubedryf in verskillende bestuurs- en topbestuursposte begin werk. Hy was 25 jaar gelede een van die stigterslede van Builders Market (Buco vanaf Oktober 2011). In Februarie 2000 het hy en sy vrou, Annetjie, na Polokwane verhuis waar hy hoofbestuurslid van Builders Market, Pietersburg was. “Oor jare het hy groot sukses behaal danksy ‘n bekwame span werknemers,” sê Johan verder wat die afgelope 16 jaar sy aan sy saam met sy pa gewerk het. Youngsters must take control of their safety and with June being Youth Month it provides an opportunity to not only celebrate being young, but to focus on all things youth-related including safety and lifestyle. This is the message from Mr Mike Kidson, Managing Director of ADT Northern Region. “Safety is a priority and must be top of mind for everyone, particularly teenagers and young adults who are also vulnerable to crime,” Kidson said. He added that knowing and applying basic safety can show youngsters that staying safe can be easy. He focused on social media and the internet that made communication faster and more fun, but it also makes it easier for predators to approach vulnerable teens. “It is important therefore that youngsters never include personal information on social media forums, blogs or websites, do not agree to meet online contacts in person, block

The centre has ten employees and at present assists 91 impoverished children from Mamontintane and Ga Mothapo villages. The donation was part of Lekganyane’s social outreach programme aimed at improving and touching the lives of the needy. “I am one of those people who believe that sharing is caring. May was Child Protection Month and I thought I should do something to assist in protecting these children from hunger and the cold weather,” Lekganyane said. Lekganyane was accompanied by relatives and friends who spent time with the children and helped them with academic work and extramural activities.

olemole Municipality Councillor Ben Malebatsa is under investigation by the municipality for allegedly illegally conducting business with the municipality without declaring his business interests and getting prior consent from the council. When contacted by Polokwane Observer yesterday, Molemole Mayor, Cllr Pauline Makgato confirmed receipt of a letter from the Democratic Alliance (DA) alleging that Malebatsa is doing business illegally with the municipality. From documents in possession of Polokwane Observer, it is clear that Malebatsa and his wife are illegally doing business with the municipality. This action is in violation of the Code of Conduct for Councillors which stipulates that a councillor must disclose to the municipal council, or any committee of which that councillor is a member, any direct or indirect personal or private business interest that the councillor, or any spouse, partner or business associate of that councillor may have in any matter before the council or the committee. In addition, Malebatsa has also breached section 6.1 of the Code of Conduct in relation to personal gain which stipulates that a councillor may not use the privileges of councillor, or confidential information obtained in that position, for private gain or to improperly benefit
another person. The documentation also contains proof that Maly 4 Trading, a company registered in the names of Malebatsa and his wife, has received payment from the Molemole Municipality for delivering transport services to a ward committee meeting and a mayoral imbizo. More recently, the documents reveal, the company received payment of R1 800 for supplying a sound system for an IDP Consultative meeting. The DA has written a letter to Makgato about Malebatsa’s failure to disclose his business interests with the municipality. DA Councillor Calvin Matjee has formally requested that Makgato establish a special committee to investigate Malebatsa’s misconduct and to remove him from office with immediate effect. Matjee added that it is a concern for the DA that in this era of democratic dispensation councillors still take advantage of the poor. “By contravening the Code of Conduct for Councillors, Malebatsa is creating a lack of confidence in the municipality which takes a long time to be restored. If he is found guilty of misconduct he must be removed from office with immediate effect,” Matjee stated. Makgato said Malebatsa’s business interests with the municipality are currently under investigation by the municipality’s accounting officer. If any irregularities have occurred, further disciplinary action will be taken against the councillor under investigation, according to Makgato.

Hy sê die onus rus verder op elke motoris om by die spoedbeperking van 60 km/h in stedelike gebiede te hou. “Die meeste ongelukke om die draai word deur spoed of bestuurders wat bane verwissel sonder om te observeer, veroorsaak. he Limpopo Association of School Governing Bodies (LASGB) wants the Department of Education to provide temporary classrooms and arrange a special mid-term examination for learners of Khogonyane Primary School in Vhembe. The school’s 418 pupils failed to write midterm examination because the department closed it down as result of its dilapidated and uninhabitable state. The parents of the school said the department promise them mobile classrooms but failed to deliver. The school governing body (SGB) said it was not consulted when the department took the decision to close the school. LASGB Secretary, Mr Prince Phandavhudzi said they are disappointed that the department failed to resolve their problems. He said they are not welcoming the idea that the department did nothing and failed to provide temporary classrooms. The department finally closed the school after it emerged that there were very few pupils in school while the infrastructure was irreparable and thus posing danger to both educators and learners. “Their action is completely compromising teaching and learning for our children, and as result we are calling upon the Minister of
Basic Education Angie Motshekga to recall the administrator of the department with immediate effect,” Phandavhudzi said. “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the closure of the school, and we are calling upon the department to provide temporary classes with immediate effect,” added Phandavhudzi. “It is also the constitutional obligation of the department to provide infrastructure that is safe and clean. The glaring inadequacies in providing infrastructure are the cause of inevitable ‘deplorable’ quality teaching and learning,” he added. Phandavhudzi said the department should provide them with sufficient reasons why it failed to provide basic learning tools. LASGB is also concerned that the educators attached to the school are collecting their salaries while doing nothing. Education spokesperson Pat Kgomo said the department is aware of the dilapidated condition of the school but that they blame the SGB for the closure of the school. “They told us we are closing the school until we build new classrooms, but it is difficult for us to put up new classrooms now, that’s why we are locating mobile classrooms for them,” Kgomo said.

Premier Cassel Mathale made this announcement during the Provincial Youth Day celebrations at Mameriri Sports ground at GaSekgopo in Mopani on Sunday. “Those who sell outside their approved timeframes will face the full might of our justice system. We cannot allow greedy business persons to maximise their profits at the expense of our people,” warned Mathale. “As government, we will continue to regulate the liquor business and advocate for responsible habits. Our future will be doomed if our young people are victims of drugs and other substance abuse. As a result, drugs and other destructive substances must never be allowed to endanger the future of our young generation,” Mathale said. He also emphasised that selling drugs to any person, at any time or place is a criminal offence. “Our youth must work closely with law enforcement agencies, especially the Police to expose those who are selling drugs. Young
people should live a healthy lifestyle and refrain from falling of any temptation. Young people must also not be victims of teenage pregnancy. As youth, you must ensure that you enjoy the stages of life responsibility bearing in mind that every stage has its own difficulties. Teenage pregnancy is one of the difficulties that can be simply avoided,” Mathale told his audience. He further said the National Youth Development Agency (Nyda) must live up to its promise of creating hope for young people and assisting them to achieve their dreams. “Amongst others, the National Youth Development Agency has a mandate to champion the interests of young people and also provide assistance to them in order to succeed in life. So, it is incumbent upon them to ensure that young people are assisted to gain access to various funding programmes which are aimed at turning their plight for the better. The programmes the agency must speak directly to the needs of our youth and give meaning to their ideas. It must not be known by the privileged few, but it must be popular throughout every space of our society. Every young person in the rural areas must know about it and have access to its services,” Mathale said.

When we announced the expo in May we were not sure of the venue but after consultations with various stakeholders we decided on
Waterberg,” Seabi said. The expo will aim to showcase all aspects of the province’s wildlife and ecotourism industries. “The expo will form part of the province’s efforts to boost tourism. We have an advantage with our wildlife and I think the expo will provide a platform to expose what we have to offer the world. We plan to engage various stakeholders to educate people about wildlife. welve alleged punters were arrested in Bela-Bela during a clean-up operation executed by Limpopo Gambling Board (LGB), the Cyber Crime Unit of the Hawks in Polokwane as well as the Detective Unit, Crime Prevention Unit and Local Criminal Record Centre from Bela-Bela last Wednesday. During the crackdown on the Internet Entertainment Lounge in Bela-Bela 42 computer monitors, three routers and R15 886 in cash kept in a drop safe were confiscated from the business. Senior Manager in the Law enforcement division of Limpopo Gambling Board, Mr Philly Masogo said the operation was prompted by the high number of illegal gambling spots in the province. “We have so many illegal gambling spots in the province and we are fighting left and right to ensure that everyone is in compliance with the law. We closed one in Tzaneen last week and we are still going to close more,” Masogo said. An employee of the illegal business expressed surprised about the shop being closed

CRIME shorts Man caught for raping niece
A 50-year-old man from Mkhushane Nyakelang Village appeared in Namakgale Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for allegedly raping his 9-yearold niece. He was to apply for bail. Police Spokesperson, Const Lucy Sekgotodi said the victim’s strange behaviour was noticed by a teacher at school. “The teacher informed the Police and they took her to the hospital where a doctor confirmed penetration,” she said.
Four up for rape and murder, bail denied
Messrs Temba Mathwala (31), Kulani Mkanzi (28), Tebogo Malatji (19) and Lucas Sekgodiale (24) were denied bail last Friday when they appeared in the Lulekani Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and murder. They will appear again later. Provincial Police Spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the four men were arrested on 28 May for the alleged rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman at Majeje Village in Namakgale. The victim, on her way from a local tavern, was confronted by four men who allegedly
took turns raping her. They then purportedly strangled her before leaving her for dead. The deceased managed to identify one of the suspects before passing on.
Seven rhino poachers nabbed
Seven suspected rhino poachers will appear in the Makhado Magistrate’s Court again on 26 June on charges of possessing illegal firearms and ammunition and the attempted poaching of rhino after they were apprehended by Police last Tuesday. Provincial Police Spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto said members of the Anti Poaching Unit of the Organised Crime Unit in Limpopo followed up information about the possibility of a poaching incident and continuously monitored the movement of the suspects. “Police swooped down on alleged poachers at 10:00 last Tuesday just outside Alldays as they were about to enter a farm,” she said. During the arrest Police confiscated three vehicles, a hunting rifle that was fastened underneath one of the vehicles, an axe as well as ammunition. Three of the suspects are from Mozambique,

Two up for attempted murder and robbery
The Police in Mookgophong arrested two men for alleged attempted murder and common robbery on Thursday. They were due to appear in the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. According to Provincial Police Spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi Police acted on information from a community member who alerted them about two men who threw a man from a moving vehicle. Apparently the suspects dragged him into their vehicle again after noticing that people saw them. “Police chased the vehicle which the informant had identified and it was cornered along the N1 South near Modimolle. Police found the 26-year-old victim who was heavily drugged and could not even stand on his own and had bruises all over his face. Upon investigation Police uncovered that the man had asked for a lift from BelaBela to Tzaneen. He was allegedly offered a drink and could not remember anything after drinking it,” Mulaudzi said.The suspects allegedly robbed the victim of an undisclosed amount of money. The two, aged 27 and 44, are from Carousel View in Hammanskraal.

A suspected rhino poacher was shot and killed and another suspect arrested after a Police tracking team spent nearly a full day tracing down the suspects. Provincial Police Spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto said the incident took place last Saturday on the farm Cumberland when a worker who usually puts out feeding for the rhinos spotted strange tracks in the area. “Farmers, Police and trackers gathered and followed the tracks of what is suspected to be four poachers. The tracks were followed for more than 24 hours and two private helicopters were also assisting in the search,” she said. At approximately 11:00 on Sunday one of the suspects was spotted under a tree. “The suspect attempted to fire at one of the helicopters circling in the area and also fired shots in the direction of the tracking team. The team returned fire and the suspect was shot in the groin and died on the scene.” Police confiscated a .303 hunting rifle and ammunition as well as an axe. The serial number of the firearm was filed off and the origin of the weapon is still being investigated.

hati Mashao is not your average girl next door. She is accustomed to grand-scale construction plant equipment of the same kind her fiveyear-old son normally plays with and owns big-boy tools generally operated on construction sites. Her journey as owner of a plant and tool hire company in Seshego has now taken her to greater heights with her inclusion in the SABC Big Break Legacy reality television show. Mashao is one of 12 finalists chosen from an initial round figure of 50 and then tapered down to 25, who will compete for a R5 million investment in a business venture. As far as could be established it is apparently the biggest prize up for grabs in a reality show on SA television ever, luring more than 700 entries. She will soon enter the big house in Johannesburg and only plans to emerge towards the end of the series after a period of competing in gruelling challenges in front of the camera, in full view of an audience that is likely to be biting their nails and be glued to the edge of their chairs by the time the series gets screened from August this year. As she plans to stick it out to the end she is packing a large travel case containing all her clothes for when she checks in at the B&B reserved for the five female contestants, she laughs. From the on-line photos of the contestants she appears the most petite of them all, but armed with real-life experiences in the business
world surely Mashao will prove that Limpopo-honed talent comes in small packages. She is not unacquainted with coming out tops, but also to much hardship in an industry she got to know when working in Mpumalanga and later back home in Limpopo after having completed a diploma in land surveying. In 2010 she registered her own business, but learnt that funding was one of the biggest obstacles, she says. Towards the end of that year she won the Youth Biz competition hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism and Limpopo Business Support Agency (Libsa) and was a finalist in the SAB Kickstart competition in 2011, a programme that ran over a year. Since successfully launching into the business world in 2011, she has continued to employ two permanent and one part-time staff members. After time in an industry dominated by men, she is used to terminology that the average woman does not use in conversations and matter-of-factly refers to concrete mixers, compactors and rollers. Her inclusion in the Big Break Legacy series follows a vigorous judging process that started with a single text message by her cell phone service provider, a sponsor of the television show, calling for competition entries mid-2012. After following the television series the previous year, she was convinced she had to enter. A round later she was chosen as one of the 50 finalists called in January this year to present a four-minute business proposal in

Polokwane, whereupon she had to go to Johannesburg for a 20-minute introduction of her business to a judging panel a month later. After a third presentation on an income generating plan for an existing non-governmental organisation in the middle of March this year, she received email notification to be at a media briefing. She then realised she must have been among the 12 finalists. From next weekend onwards she would have to get used to entering into challenges in front of the camera. And as Thati Mashao prepares herself for the show, a possible win may be the big break she has been waiting for. All is not win-win-win and work only for Mashao though. When she has time she takes a break in the Magoebaskloof area. She singles it out as her favourite destination in Limpopo, which has always been her home. Moruleng in Seshego’s Zone 1 where her business is based is evidently where her heart is, but for the moment she is kissing the settlement goodbye because she has her hopes set on greater things.

Vodacom offers the solution to more money in your pocket

RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Vodacom Limpopo last week launched One Net Express, a mobile technology based communication solution that has the potential to save small and medium enterprises (SMMEs) hundreds of millions of Rand. The launch was hosted at Fusion Boutique Hotel during a business breakfast to which several local businesses were introduced to this innovative solution from which any business is able to gain. A media statement released at the launch stated that One Net Express, which provides big business switchboard benefits to small businesses, is already in use by over two million Vodafone subscribers across the United Kingdom and Europe. Together these customers have realised savings of over £1 billion in just over a year. In his presentation Mr Malik Melamu, Limpopo Vodacom Managing Executive made it clear that Vodacom strives towards making people connect and to create opportunities for people in business. “SMEs are the drive train of South Africa’s economy as the country hosts over 600 000 officially registered small businesses. One Net Express is yet another milestone from Vodacom to create better opportunities for small businesses,” he said. The concept of “more contacts, more contracts, more money” became clear during a demonstration on how the One Net Express works. A secretary is not needed as the system uses voice activated prompts and customers phoning in can be directed directly to an employee’s cell phone. With hunt groups the business can set up the phone number to

ring on multiple phones, mobile and 3G desk phone, at once or set it up to ring in a fixed order from one person to the next until an available employee answers the call. Alternatively a circular ring set up will equally share the call load amongst the team. This ensures that somebody in the business is always able to take the call, regardless of where they are. The product, available for under R200 per month, is specifically designed for companies employing up to 100 persons. It gives businesses traditional switchboard or PBX features on their cell phone. On top of this, One Net Express includes a host of call management functions such as hunt groups and auto attendant, which means theses businesses never have to miss a call again. Businesses will also have the option to either port in or request a landline telephone number for their business. This number will be accessible to their cell phone with no divert fees. The key features of One Net Express are the auto attendant which acts like a virtual receptionist, hunt groups intelligently route calls to employees, each One Net Express user receives 500 free minutes each month to call other One Net Express users within the business, the ability to add an existing landline telephone number, and the ability to instantly connect up to five devices to a 3G desk phone which has a built-in Wi-Fi router that allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network. One Net Express is a value added service activated on a customer’s prevailing price plan. All One Net Express tariffs are billed directly to the business owner. One Net Express costs R149 per user per month and R32 per hunt group, once off.

ie gewilde bloedskenkkompetisie het verlede week op ‘n hoë noot geëindig met Pietersburg Laerskool (Suidskool) wat 403 eenhede bloed teenoor die Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos (Oosskool) se 293 eenhede geskenk het. Suidskool se saal was verlede Woensdag met ouers, onderwysers en ondersteuners gepak wat moue opgerol het in ‘n poging om meer eenhede bloed as hul opponente te skenk. Suidskool het ook daarin geslaag om ‘n nuwe rekord vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBD) in Limpopo op te stel. Volgens SANBDMnr Dewald Hattingh skenk bloed met Pietersburg Laerskool se bloedskenkdag. By hom is Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBD)skakelbeampte, me Dottie Pinn.

Die kragmeting tussen die plaaslike twee skole het al ‘n totaal van 1 735 eenhede sedert 2008 opgelewer,” sê Pinn. Sy het ander skole aangemoedig om by soortgelyke projekte betrokke te raak. CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional space; or curves, surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional space. “Our vision with the AutoCAD centre is not only to educate learners and to give them an advantage when they enter tertiary education, we will also do programming and conduct shows at the centre for Polokwane to see what it is all about,” Visser said. In the near future AutoCAD will also be available to the public in which classes will be given to interested people. The AutoCAD centre and the Autodesk Design Suite software is sponsored by Dimension Data Polokwane. They will be assisting the centre in further upgrades and modernisation of the current centre. Mr Louis Viljoen from Prokon Software Consultants also sponsored the centre with Prokon Structural Analyses and Design software that will be used in Civil Engineering. The centre will officially be opened on 16 July but is currently available to the Grade 12 learners as a resource to finalise their assignments.

Amongst the students was one PhD graduate, seven masters graduates as well as several others who completed their qualifications. The graduation ceremony was attended by senior personnel from the university, including its Proff Mandla Makhanya (Principal and Vice Chancellor), Narend Baijnath (Pro Vice Chancellor), Dr Molapo Qhobela (Vice Principal Institutional Development) Prof Ralebipi Simela (Regional Director of Unisa Limpopo) and other senior representatives of the various colleges.

Omdat statutêre werk die meeste van my tyd neem, kan ek onmoontlik op voorkoming konsentreer.” Voorkoming kan volgens haar ‘n reuse verskil maak as sy meer tyd gehad het. Kinderverwaarlosing as gevolg van armoede, onkunde en soms die gebrek aan ouervaardighede is ‘n yslike kopseer in die stad. “Ons gaan uit ons pad om kinders uit hul slegte omstandighede te verwyder en in ‘n veilige plek te plaas waar daar hoop vir ‘n gesonde toekoms is.” Haar wenk aan die gemeenskap wat graag ‘n hand uitsteek om te help maar sku is om vir
enigeen geld in die hand te stop, is om by geregistreerde organisasies aan te klop vir raad. “Daar is te veel mense wat geld insamel om die verkeerde redes. Dié mense veroorsaak dat die wat graag gee, hul hande toemaak omdat hulle al deur skelmstreke gevang is.” Sy doen ook ‘n beroep op weldoeners om nie hul geld uit die provinsie te laat gaan nie. “Ons mense op eie bodem het jul hulp dringend nodig. Daar is baie mense wat organisasies buite die provinsie se grense ondersteun terwyl mense in hul eie gemeenskap doodgaan van honger. Ms Felicia Mphahlele, Marketing and Sales Manager for Headline Leisure Management at Meropa said they decided to invite senior citizens to be part of the launch because they are hardly involved in anything. “We felt it will be befitting that the new menu is sampled by our seniors. Meropa is about bringing people and families together and it was good to see our elders enjoying the meals. We hope to see them in the restaurant in future,” Mphahlele said. Ms Mamolepo Machaka, founder of Regaugetswe Old Age Home thanked Meropa Casino & Entertainment World for inviting them and also allowing them to be part of the new offers at the restaurant. “It was our first outing since the establishment of the home. We really enjoyed ourselves. All the dishes that were ordered by our members were scrumptious. I ate one special meal that was on their menu and it was delicious,” Machaka said. The menu includes jalapeño peppers, gorgonzola and jalapeño stuffed chicken breast and for desert pears poached in red wine and topped with jalapeño ice cream.

The Crown Rehabilitation & Conservation Wildlife Centre (CRCWC) outside Polokwane received a welcome shot in the arm when the Round Table 22 handed it a cheque for R5 000 last Wednesday. Secretary for Round Table 22, Mr Ben Nortje said the organisation’s 41ner and also DA councillor, Mr Frank Haas proposed the donation to CRCWC for all their unselfish time and effort spent on treating and rehabilitating injured birds and wildlife. He challenged other charitable organisations and businesses in the city to do the same. CRCWC owner, Ms Rene Olivier thanked Round Table 22 for their wonderful donation. She added that the funds would be used to pay veterinary bills, provide food and medicines for the injured animals and to build new shelters at the centre. CRCWC is a registered non-profit organisation and relies on donations to take care of all the injured wildlife, mainly caused by the folly of mankind. A cheque was presented to the school during a special assembly that was also attended by local councillor, Mr Phoroana Modikoa. rederick Romijn (33) is wel ‘n nuweling in die stad, maar ‘n ou hand as dit by rugbyafrigting kom. Hy is stadig maar seker besig om nes in Limpopo te skop en naam onder die sportgemeenskap te maak. Romijn is onlangs deur die Limpopo Blou Bulle Rugby-unie as voorspelerafrigter van die o.19-Curriebekerspan gekies en is reeds besig om die spelers voor te brei vir ‘n harde toernooi wat Augustus begin. In April vanjaar het hy by Mitchell House as sportdirekteur aangesluit nadat hy sportkoördineerder by HeronBridge College in Johannesburg was. “Die pos by Mitchell House het ek as ‘n uitdaging en ‘n trappie hoër in my onderrigloopbaan gesien omdat ek by alle aspekte van sportorganisasie betrokke was,” sê hy.
Sedert 2007 het hy as rugbyafrigter waardevolle ondervinding opgedoen. Hy was betrokke by die afrigting van die o.19Valkespan vir die Noordwes-Universiteit se Puk-rugbyreeks, die Universiteit van Johannesburg se o.19A- en o.20-span, die Goue Leeus se amateurspan en die Pirates Rugbyklub. “Elke jaar het die o.19A- en o.20-span die liga gewen,” spog hy. “Dit is vir my ‘n groot voorreg om Limpopo se o.19-Curriebekerspan se voorspelers af te rig. Ek wil graag volgende jaar die hoofafrigter wees, maar fokus nou eers om die voorspelers in topvorm vir die toernooi te kry,” sê Romijn. Hy reken die spelers het hope talent, maar daar is nog baie skaafwerk nodig. “Plattelandse spanne het meer oefening nodig omdat die spelers wydverspreid oor die provinsie bly en nie gereeld by oefeninge kan uitkom nie. Die stadsjapies is daagliks in die gimnasiums waar plattelandse spelers moet werk om ‘n salaris te verdien en deeltyds rugby speel.” Romijn se fokus is om die beker huis toe te bring. “Ons speel om te wen. As ons nie wen nie, kyk ons na ons foute en werk daaraan. Ons hoef nie die knie vir enige span te buig nie.” Sy liefde vir rugby het in 1998 in sy eerste jaar as finansiële bestuur-student aan die destydse Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU) begin toe hy as RAU se o.21-spankaptein verkies is en dieselfde jaar as die universiteit se beste mansatleet aangewys is. Hy het veral goed presteer in die 400 m en 400 m- en 110 m-hekkies. Na sy graadstudies voltooi hy ook ‘n onderwysdiploma en begin in 2001 by Roodepoort Hoërskool as bedryfsekonomie-onderwyser. Na ‘n jaar besluit hy egter om vir twee jaar in Europa te toer om die wêreld te sien. As Romijn nie op die rugbyveld besig is nie, sal ‘n mens hom op die gholfbaan of in die gimnasium raakloop. By die huis lees hy graag boeke van Deon Meyer of snuffel in boeke en die internet oor verskeie lande se geskiedenis.

The 29-year-old hopes to gain recognition from the Federation of International Hockey after the 2013 USSA Hockey Week in order to umpire at the highest possible level. His dream is to be selected as an umpire at the Olympic Games. In addition to being one of SA’s lead-
ing young umpires, Moretsele is also the coach of the u.14 boy’s hockey team at Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS). Prior to that he coached the boy’s hockey team at Hoërskool Waterkloof and played hockey for the Tshwane University of Technology. He has been involved with senior hockey both as a player and coach for over nine years. Moretsele also runs the Limpopo Hockey Academy at PHS. The academy is open to all boys and girls from six to 16 and utilises the excellent hockey facilities at the school.

During an entertaining evening the Chairman of the club, Francois Hartlief handed over certificates to sponsors and people that contributed towards a successful 2012 rugby season. Westenburg Rugby Club was started in 2006 by Hartlief and his brother, Bob and will be participating for their seventh season in the Limpopo development league. Hartlief said the funds raised at the dance will go towards the cost of building the new Westenburg Stadium behind the Westenburg Secondary School.

Die 3,5 km-wedloop met twee waterpunte, wat wyd deur verskeie maatskappye in die stad ondersteun word, is die ideale spanbouprojek. Die komitee beplan om vanjaar 80 besighede betrokke te kry wat ‘n span van vier teen R550 kan inskryf. Trollies sal op 25 Julie by die verskeie
deelnemers afgelewer word. Da Silva sê die trollies mag verfraai maar nie geverf of beskadig word nie. Die wedloop begin om 09:00 by die ou Peter Mokaba Stadion en slegs genomineerde spanlede mag die trollie stoot. Die genomineerde bestuurder is die enigste persoon wat in die trollie mag wees en al die spanlede moet die eindstreep saam oorsteek. Die program sal later bekendgemaak word. Daar is pryse vir die eerste drie wenspanne asook vir die besgeklede span en die span met die oorspronklikste trollie. In die wedstryde het het 33 spelers regoor die provinsie in Makhado swaarde gekrys en die spelers het die geleentheid gehad om vir die Limpopospanne te kwalifiseer wat in September aan die interprovinsiale kampioenskappe in Pretoria deelneem.
Local quad biker to take on 1 000 km endurance race RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Local quad bike rider Jurie Meyer’s (20) consistently outstanding performance on the racing track since his early teenage years has paid off as he now holds the title of National Champion in the Senior Off-road Quad Class. At the time of going to press Jurie had already left for Botswana to compete in his first endurance race over a distance of nearly 1 000 km, the Toyota 1 000 Desert Race. The annual race is the premier event on the South African national off-road racing calendar and takes place in the Kalahari Desert this weekend. “I am stressed as it will be my first endurance race stretching over two days and a distance of 1 000 km. It will definitely take me out of my comfort zone but I see it as a challenge,” Meyer told Polokwane Observer. As national champ he will be first on the grid at the start of the race. The Desert Race began its life as the Total Trans-Kalahari Race in 1975 and was run for several years in the area directly below the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana. Following the signing of the Gleneagles Agreement in 1977 which discouraged Commonwealth members from engaging in sport with South Africa, Botswana no longer welcomed South African participation in the race. From 1981 the event took place in the Vryburg/Taylor’s Pan area of the Northern Cape and this is when Toyota South Africa’s marketing came on board as the event sponsor and it became known as the Toyota 1000 Desert Race. In the late 1980s game farming
became increasingly popular thus drastically shrinking the areas available to run this 1 000 km event. As a result of this, the idea of moving back to Botswana was explored and in 1991, the event moved back to where it all began back in 1975. ean Burmester kept his cool while all the other contenders faltered in the windy conditions at the Polokwane Golf Club on the last day of the Polokwane Classic on Saturday to claim his first victory on the Sunshine Tour. What made the occasion even more memorable for the 24-year-old was that his dad, Mark and grandfather, Greville was on hand to see him triumph by four shots over his nearest rivals. Proud father, Mark Burmester said he and his dad were on their way from Botswana to Kwa-Zulu Natal on Thursday when they heard Dean was among the early pace-setters for the tournament. They decided to postpone the rest of their journey to see how Dean fares over the last two days and were overjoyed to witness him claim his first victory on the Sunshine Tour on Saturday. His son’s maiden win was also the perfect Father’s Day gift for his proud dad. Burmester shot a four under 68 while the other players could not master the tricky wind that made iron selection difficult on the last day. Justin Harding and Merrick Bremner shared second place on eight under par with overnight leader, Titch Moore claiming fourth place on seven under. Moore, who led going into the last round, shot a closing five over par 77 in stark contrast to the great golf he had played over the first 36 holes. Moore started badly with four bogeys in his first six holes while Dean kept up the pressure with a single birdie to go from four behind to a one-stroke lead. “I saw Titch was a little jittery at the start, Dean said afterwards. “I just kept telling myself that with the wind blowing like it was, I must focus on making par and the birdies would come on their own.” Dean took a one-stroke lead on the back nine and scored a further three birdies with one dropped shot to coast to 12-under and a four shot victory. “I made a few putts in the
beginning that settled the nerves and when I took the lead I knew I could do this,” he explained. “It’s been a long time coming. I tried to stay patient and managed to pull it through this week,” an elated Dean said. At the handing over of the trophy afterwards, Executive Mayor of Polokwane Freddy Greaver thanked the sponsors, Lepelle Northern Water, Silicon Smelters, ABI, AM Consulting, Vodacom and The Wired Corporation for helping to promote the city of Polokwane. So much so that the local municipality did not have to contribute a cent towards the tournament. “Our sponsors made it all happen,” said Greaver. “This tournament means a lot for us to promote growth for the local economy and promote tourism. It will enable us to use golf to create awareness and raise funds for certain social responsibilities. We are also extremely grateful to the tournament promoters SAIL. It is vital for our municipal officials to work with experienced events companies like SAIL and learn from them so it can benefit our own events and the running thereof,” Greaver elaborated.

a slegs drie jaar in die saal gaan junior uithouruiter, Ludolph Neethling SuidAfrika op 26 en 27 Julie se naam hoog hou in die Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Junior Wêreldkampioenskappe in Tarbes, Frankryk. Die 15-jarige leerder van die Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) het in Maart gekwalifiseer om teen die wêreld se beste junior ruiters sake uit te spook. Ludolph het al twee keer as juniorruiter sy Suid-Afrikaanse kleure van die Endurance Ride Association of South Africa (ERASA) ontvang, maar dit sal die eerste keer wees dat hy amptelik sy land op internasionale vlak verteenwoordig. Voor hy teen die beste juniors in Frankryk te staan kom, sal hy eers aan die strawwe plaaslike Fauresmith 200 van 2 tot 4 Julie deelneem waar hy verlede jaar vierde in die junior kategorie geëindig het. Die uithourit is een van die bekendste en strafste kompetisies op die ERASA-kalender en word oor 201 km oor drie dae gehou. ‘n Goeie verstandhouding tussen die ruiter en perd is net een van die eerste voorvereistes van uithouritte.
“Die ruiter moet die beste terrein kies en die regte besluite neem om die beste uit sy perd te kry. Slegs die beste sorg en voorbereiding vir jou perd voor en tydens die rit stel ‘n ruiter in staat om dit in ‘n goeie tyd te voltooi,” sê Ludolph. Volgens hom moet jy fiks en ingestel wees om meer as ‘n honderd kilometer in ‘n dag in alle weersomstandighede te voltooi. “Tydens die rit word perde by ruspunte deur ‘n veearts ondersoek. Indien ‘n perd se hartklop nie vinning daal nie of enige beserings het, word beide die perd en ruiter onmiddellik van die kompetisie onttrek,” verduidelik Ludolph. Arabiese perde word meestal gebruik omdat hulle so getrou aan hul ruiters is. Sy ma, Ronell sê Ludolph is ‘n natuurlike ruiter. “Hy is baie lief vir perde en alles wat met uithouritte gepaard gaan en het reeds gewys dat hy op die hoogste vlak kan meeding. Ons geniet as gesin die buitelewe, geselskap en goeie gees van die ander deelnemers.” Ludolph is vol vertroue dat hy en sy spanmaats Suid-Afrika se vlag hoog sal laat wapper op sy gehuurde perd, Quiwi Breventec. As gevolg van die duur en lang proses om perde van Suid-Afrika na Frankryk te vervoer sal hy nie op sy eie perd kan deelneem nie. Ludolph se pa, Jimmy is sy afrigter. Saam met Ronell tref hul al die reëlings wanneer Ludolph en sy jonger boetie, Christiaan, dwarsoor die land aan uithouritte deelneem. Die Neethlings is baie dankbaar dat PHS vir hom die geleentheid gun om aan uithouritte deel te neem. Hulle bedank ook Ludolph se borge, Boschchem van Mokopane en die Energy Shop in Polokwane.
