Sterkman en fiksheidinstrukteur, Pieter Theron se liggaam is gisteroggend (Woensdag) in die Olifantsrivier gevind.

Residents at the Karee Military Base have been in the dark since Sunday after alleged cable issues caused the premises to be without electricity on Wednesday for the fourth day in a row.

In the face of rumours of non-payment of electricity bills on behalf of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Polokwane Observer was able to establish that the fault lies with municipal cables supplying the base with electricity. This was established following a conversation with Paul

gou as moontlik geskied.

The DA’s intended request for an investigation by the national commission stemmed from Polokwane Observer’s lead story published last week as well as follow-up calls to union ranks which indicated sufficient proof to continue requesting an investigation, indicated DA Provincial Leader Jacques HERBERT RACHUENE Smalle. >>herbert@mailbox.co.za In a media release Smalle referred to Polokwane Municipality and the allegations that the Department of Roads and Transport officials were behind yesterday (Wednesday) launched its claims of growing Non Motorised Transport Project which tribal hostility among stands to benefit local users by maxVenda, Tsongas and imising and promoting ease, accessiSepedi speaking ofbility and convenience in the city. ficials working in the Mantlako Sebaka, Head of Marketing , Communications and Stakeholder Relations at the Polokwane Municipality said non motorised transport is the most suitable mode with potential to yield benefits such as safety, accessibility, convenience, comfort and affordability and will also play a major role in improving the overall urban

Duba has failed to intervene by establishing a task team to probe all these allegations and to take appropriate steps against the clique.” He expressed concern over MEC Dipuo LetsatsiDuba’s slackness to address the alleged situation for she was compelled to launch an investigation into the matter. “The CRL Rights Commission must commence with their probe and come up with recommendations that will ensure that tribal hostility is addressed for good in that department.” He said he would want to see an independent investigation by the commission that in the end would come up with strong recommendations. These include such programmes as Shova Kalula, the Greening Programme, the Polokwane Integrated Urban Real and Movement Plan, just to mention a few. The City of Polokwane’s current transport plans which are being implemented under the 2030 Smart City Vision and the 2030 Smart Mobility Goal, which promote the non motorised transport mode, are a step in the right direction,” Sebaka added. “The integration of the non motorised transport mode into the ongoing Integrated Public Transport System stands to benefit local users by maximising and promoting ease, accessibility and convenience. It also

important to note that these programs are being planned to meet the Department of Transport’s vision which requires all the non motorised transport facilities to embrace universal accessibility and universal design principles. As a province, we are proud to launch these very important programs, which stand to immensely benefit our local communities and visitors,” Sebaka concluded.

Despite hindrances on the part of the Polokwane Provincial Hospital Lee-Ann Mulder, after two failed pregnancies and a high-risk prenatal profile, gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Anna-Bella on Tuesday afternoon. This could have been very different after she was told by staff at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital that she could not undergo the caesarean section, scheduled and diarised by the hospital gynaecologist due to her pregnancy being seen as high-risk, that was supposed to be performed on Thursday. The reason they gave for the delay of the c-section is that the hospital washing machine was broken and therefore no clean linen was available to use during the operation. With the national and provincial elections taking place in less than two weeks nearly every lamp post in the city bears multiple party posters in a last effort to garner votes. Some however push the boundaries by putting up posters on power boxes which is considered illegal and the municipality continues to have it removed. Two power boxes, one in Jupiter Street and another at the corner of Grobler and Webster streets are covered in posters of the Economic Freedom Party (EFF). Polokwane Municipal Spokesperson Malesela Maubane said it is in contravention of the city’s bylaws. “Our community safety officials will continue to remove such posters as a way of enforcing relevant bylaws. Only lamp post advertising is allowed for such posters,” he said. He said legal posters must display

an orange municipal sticker which indicates the expiry dateon which the posters must be removed. He added that persons who wish to advertise on lamp posts can contact Pat Hamese or Mandla Mutileng of Shumans Outdoor/Adreach Group, the company contracted by the municipality to handle such adverts. total of 68 accidents claimed the lives of 17 persons, including three pedestrians, in Limpopo over the Easter weekend. Countrywide a total of 103 people died in vehicle related accidents. In a major accident between Makhado and Thohoyandou last Thursday evening a taxi overturned and burst into flames claiming eight lives and seriously injuring seven. Roads and Transport MEC Lehlogonolo Masoga visited the injured passengers at the Makhado Memorial Hospital on Tuesday morning and families of the deceased later in the afternoon. Roads and Transport Spokesperson Jimmy Machaka in a press release issued on Tuesday said Masoga is scheduled to meet with officials from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) to discuss the way forward to assist the families of the deceased and injured. Statistics for this year’s Easter weekend were gathered from 06:00 on Thursday to Monday 06:00. Roads and Transport Spokesperson on traffic Kagiso Mootane said the number of accidents reported is significantly lower than in 2013 when 81 accidents occurred within the five districts leaving 16 persons dead. Municipal and provincial traffic officials were deployed at strategic points to keep traffic flow smooth and maintained high visibility especially on the R71 towards Moria to ensure that

road users stick to the traffic laws. On Monday morning visitors to Limpopo started making their way back home and the situation repeated itself when 2 103 vehicles passed through the Kranskop Toll Plaza per hour at 15:00 on Monday, according to Mootane. “Roads heavily affected by traffic congestion include the N1, R101, R71, R37 and N11 with 28 accidents with two fatalities that were reported in Mopani. Sixteen were reported in Vhembe, 11 in Capricorn, eight in Waterberg and five in Sekhukhune. Capricorn, Sekhukhune and Vhembe claimed one, three and 11 lives respectively. A decline in Easter road fatalities has been recorded over the past five years with 31 deaths in 2009 and 2010, 25 in 2011, 23 in 2012 and 16 last year. Photos: RC Myburgh

It is all systems go for the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Limpopo in anticipation of Election Day which is another week and six days away. On 7 May the IEC in Limpopo would be expected to have the 3 066 dedicated voting stations across the province in full operation. IEC Provincial Spokesperson Chris Ramafalo said so far everything was on track ahead of the pending elections. At the time of going to press they were finalising the capturing of special votes applications from across the province, he said, of which an estimated 29 000 have by then been processed. Today (Thursday) is the expected deadline for the IEC to issue certificates after Tuesday’s cutoff date for the compilation of lists of parties and final lists of candidates to contest the elections. A further deadline in the process leading up to the eventual elections is the application and casting of special votes set for 30 April. As per official IEC time table visitation for purposes of special votes and casting of special votes are supposed to take place on 5 and 6 May, the last occurrence before the actual elec-

tions the following day. At this stage Limpopo remains absorbed in an ongoing political frenzy as various political parties are still taking advantage of the remaining time to campaign and canvas for votes come 7 May. Limpopo remains fertile electioneering ground for political leaders who are optimistic about swaying the odd potential voter towards securing support for their cause. Some party placards are still going up and some posters noticed on the streets of Polokwane are testimony to leaders who still aim at claiming votes despite the fact that they have neglected Limpopo or seem to be lacking representation here. With time the province has played host to political heavyweights from across the spectrum on electioneering drives in urban settings and remote settlements in far flung locations alike to meet with communities, make use of platforms for political talk, launch elections manifestos, conduct door-to-doors, dish out T-shirts, show goodwill and attempt to defuse hostility accompanying the threat to withhold votes stemming from dissatisfaction with service delivery. The fever that is tangible all round is a reminder of the reality that for many the right to vote in this democracy has presented itself very late in life.

Over 150 000 textbooks still to be delivered Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com The Limpopo Education Department has finally admitted that over 150 000 textbooks have not been delivered to 39 schools in the province after community-based organisation Basic Education for All (Befa) and the Department for Basic Education (DBE) were back in the Gauteng North High Court on Tuesday for the court application to have all outstanding textbooks delivered in Limpopo This follows an urgent application brought by Befa on behalf of 18 school governing bodies in Limpopo and Section 27 that the DBE and Limpopo Education Department (LED) be compelled to deliver all outstanding textbooks to schools in Limpopo. Befa has applied for a court order to force the LED to stick to their deadlines for the delivery of school textbooks and to come up with a plan to prevent a recurrence of the textbook fiasco in the province. Befa also wants the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to oversee the delivery process and for the court

to declare that the non-delivery of textbooks violated learners’ constitutional right to basic education. The organisation said it is willing to accept LED’s offer to deliver textbooks for certain grades by 8 May and the rest by 6 June. The SAHRC said it did not have a budget to oversee the delivery of every single textbook in the country. Judge Neil Tuchten allowed the court to stand down for two hours in order for Befa and the DBE to compile a joint list of what textbooks still have to be delivered to which schools in Limpopo. The judge urged the parties to first deal with the individual schools affected by the nondelivery of textbooks and thereafter argue the constitutional issues. Counsel for Befa, Adila Hassim argued that a court order was necessary because the DBE had in the past failed to adhere to its own deadlines. The application continued in the Gauteng North High Court yesterday (Wednesday) and at the time of going to press the outcome had yet to be decided.

eing a light in the darkest hour and a beacon of hope is exactly what Vodacom Limpopo is aiming for this month. While for most people the recent flooding in Limpopo has been replaced by more topical news, those directly affected by it are still suffering the consequences. Fortunately various institutions and establishments have opened their hearts and their wallets to ensure that these victims continue to be assisted. The Vodacom Foundation in Limpopo acted speedily in their endeavour to empower these victims. The organisation donated R400 000 in supplies for victims from the flood stricken regions. Andile April from the Vodacom Foundation says the aim of the foundation is to help deliver the

aid to areas in the Waterberg District which are most affected by the flooding. “The Foundation has been working towards working cooperatively with Gift of the Givers to ensure the deliveries take place as soon as possible. The team will, among other things provide food and clothing to the families in the neediest and most affected areas,” April said. Vodacom’s Managing Executive Officer for the Limpopo region, Zunaid Munshi said: “Vodacom feels the pain and suffering of its customers and we genuinely hope that this donation will go a long way in alleviating their plight during this time.” Initial reports received have indicated that some affected families are currently living in transit camps and as a result the food supplies are dwindling severely and will soon be depleted.

LTA partners with Polokwane show organisers > ‘We will also be looking at a possibility of changing this predominantly agricultural show and to have a strong tourism presence’ Hlungwani HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) and the organisers of Polokwane Show on Thursday signed a three year agreement that will see the agency and local tourism products participating in the show. This year’s show will be held from 28 to 31 May. During the signing ceremony at Meropa Casino & Entertainment World LTA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Fixon Hlungwani said the agency saw the need to enhance the show and showcase the diversity of its tourism products to the local people. “By entering into this agreement, we will also be looking at a possibility of changing this predominantly agricultural show and to have a strong tourism presence. In future we will look into having seminars and speed marketing events at the show to make the participation more beneficial to our product owners,” Hlungwani said. “Twenty-six tourism products will benefit from this agreement and will see a dedicated hall at the show which will purely cater for tourism,” he added. Meropa Casino & Entertainment World will be sponsoring ten tourism

product owners of their choice. Stalls are available on a first come, first serve basis and available at a minimal fee of R2 000, including VAT, payable to the show organisers. Lelané van der Merwe, Co-organiser of Polokwane Show said their partnership with LTA will grow the show and attract more people to the event. “We are happy to have the agency on board. In the past 52 years our focus has been on agriculture. This collaboration will enable us to compete with trade shows like Indaba,” she said. Mokgadi Matli, Human Resource Manager at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World said the partnership will develop tourism in the province. “We will be financially supporting ten

emerging small enterprises. We are going to pay for their stalls and provide them with refreshments during the show,” Matli said. The selected products are Bradford’s Place, Green SA Travel Centre, Lapologa Bed and Breakfast, Madulo Guest House, Makgabeng Farm Lodge, Masai Lodge, South African Reatswelela Travel and Tourism, Sunrise Entertainment Villa, Ledimor Guest House and Twilight Travel Centre. Asked about the criteria for selection, Matli said they chose them because they operate within a 100 km radius of Meropa Casino & Entertainment World, are Black owned and Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment accreditated.

CRIME shorts Constables in court for defeating justice Police officials Nthabiseng Mokobane (34) and Mameste Legodi (38) appeared before the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of defeating the ends of justice. Both women previously, on 4 March, appeared in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court and were released on bail of R500 each. The duo was arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in March after allegedly forcing a rape victim to withdraw her statement against a fellow Police official. According to Moses Dlamini from the IPID the two officers, both attached to the Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit in Seshego, are suspected to have asked a rape victim to forgive the suspect and take an offer of R50 000 from the alleged rapist. Dlamini further said the victim allegedly refused the offer and was then tricked into signing a withdrawal statement by the accused officials. He added that both suspects have been suspended by the South African Police without pay. The case has been postponed to June for further investigation.

Infant’s death still being investigated

Exactly a month after a six-month old baby died in a car accident in in Platinum Street, Ladine no conclusion has been arrived at concerning the cause of the accident or whether charges will be brought against the driver of the vehicle. The driver, a mother of two, allegedly lost control of her vehicle causing the infant to be ejected from the vehicle and dying instantly on the scene. Ronel Otto from the Limpopo Police said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated and once all evidence has been assembled the docket will be handed to the Public Prosecutor’s office who will then determine if sufficient evidence exists to prosecute the driver. Polokwane Observer earlier reported on the tragic accident which eyewitnesses alleged was due to the driver of the vehicle being exceeding the speed limit, driving recklessly and with unrestrained children in her vehicle. One witness is quoted to have said the driver abruptly hit the brakes as she turned into the curve, lost control of the vehicle which then became airborne and overturned four

times. The infant was ejected 15 m from the vehicle’s point of impact with the kerb.

Man allegedly hacks grandmother to death

Bongani Chauke (29) appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday following his arrest after he allegedly hacked his 83-year-old grandmother to death with an axe over the weekend. The suspect was denied bail and the case was remanded to today (Thursday) for further investigation. It is alleged that the suspect accused his grandmother of bewitching and killing his mother who passed away last week after a short illness. The 52-year old mother was buried at Mshiyani Village near Giyani on Saturday. Ronel Otto from the Limpopo Police confirmed the incident and the arrest and says it is alleged that the suspect accused his grandmother of witchcraft following his mother’s funeral on Saturday after which he attacked her with an axe and bludgeoned her to death. Otto said the severest of the injuries had been inflicted to the victim’s neck.

6 arrested in Mahwelereng Six men were arrested in Mahwelereng on Monday after being found in possession of alleged unlicensed firearms and explosives. Solomon Makgale from the Mokopane Police says the men, five of whom are South African nationals and the other a foreign national, were arrested on Tuesday on the N11 between Steilloop and Mokopane. “According to Makgale, an in progress Police intelligence operation brought forth information pertaining to suspects that were planning on holding up staff at a business in the area and then allegedly blowing up the ATM using the explosives that were found on the suspects. They were found with guns, ammunition, five firearms, fuses and a blasting cartridge,” Makgale said. He added that the suspects were also found with other tools such as an electrical extension cord, a ten pound hammer, balaclavas, an angle grinder, a screwdriver and sixteen vehicle keys. They were arrested following combined efforts by the Police’s intelligence team, the Limpopo Provincial Police, the Mahwelereng Detective Services and the local Tactical Response Unit. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

After last Wednesday’s heavy rains, the main gravel road in the Onverwacht/Kalkfontein area on the turn-off from the R71 was unusable for two-wheel drive vehicles and a number of vehicles got stuck on Thursday morning.

G

ravel roads servicing smallholdings around Polokwane are not being maintained properly resulting in regular users of these roads getting stuck after the least bit of rainfall or suffering damage to their vehicles. Last Wednesday a number of vehicles got stuck in mud on the Onverwacht road leading from the R71 (Tzaneen road) to the R81 (Modjadjiskloof road). The Onverwacht road is the main service road to smallholdings in the Kalkfontein/Onverwacht area on the eastern side of the city. A resident who has been living in the area for many years, Louis Jacobs said the gravel road has not been graded at all in 2014. He added that when road maintenance does get done no provision is made for water run-off that can lead to the deterioration of the road over a long period of time. Jacobs had to use his 4x4 bakkie to pull three vehicles from the mud on Thursday morning after a number of persons were

caught in the mud after Wednesday’s heavy rain in the area. Had it not been for Jacobs’ assistance the people would have been late for school and work. Polokwane Observer recently reported that residents living on the Palmietfontein smallholdings had lodged a complaint with the Polokwane Municipality after a gravel service road became unusable for two-wheel drive vehicles, especially after heavy rains. The Polokwane Municipality commented afterwards that the maintenance of all gravel roads falling under their care will be addressed in 2014/15 Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson Malesela Maubane said the municipality is committed to ensuring that all roads are in a good condition and encourages residents to notify the municipality on roads in their area that are damaged due to the recent heavy rainfall. He added that officials from the roads and storm water department at the municipality will carry out an inspection of the Onverwacht gravel road.

F

ormer Polokwane resident Arlette Franks is exhibiting for the first time in 20 years at the Liebrecht Gallery in Somerset West from 20 April to 4 May. Franks moved from Polokwane two years ago. In a telephone conversation with Polo kwane Observer last Thursday, Franks explained that she did not have the time for her own exhibition as she was too involved with bringing exposure to the many talented artists in various genres that are found all over Limpopo. As a result of her involvement in various community art projects over the 20 years that she resided in Polokwane, Franks said she is feeling as excited as any young artist who will be holding their first art exhibition.

Drawing inspiration from photographic images and words published in daily and weekly newspapers in South Africa since the Marikana tragedy in August 2012, Franks has produced a body of mixed media collages on canvas in which she poses questions and commentaries, and raises an issue or two, about the contemporary political and socio-economic state of affairs. The result is a mixture of bananas, elephants and teapots in mixed media captured on canvas. Focusing on particular people, episodes or stories, each work of art seeks to recreate a context and content that expresses some of the loaded meanings and humour with which she reacts to that story, and expresses what she sees and thinks about in the present-day turbulent South African socio-political landscape. Franks’ work is as honest and forthright as it gets. With her unique combination of visual material and 17/2014 text taken directly from daily/weekly newspapers, together with her brand of

ollowing its establishment in 1933 Progress Milling celebrated its 80th anniversary last year and since the onset the business has grown into a force to be reckoned with playing a dynamic role in the economy of the city of Polokwane and Limpopo. What Progress Milling does best is add value for customers as was proved last week when Progress Foods expanded its premises to be able to offer more products and affordable prices. Managed by Anthony Alberts, Progress Foods was re-launched last Monday on a much bigger scale to offer even better service to clients. Alberts said the idea of expanding the store came after months of discussion on how to increase the shop’s turnover as well as ways to provide a wider range of products at affordable prices to their patrons. “We expanded the storeroom to stock bulk products in order to keep purchase prices low which impacts

the selling prize to the public. He added that the customer flow has been improved by creating ample sized separate entrance and exit points. “By doing this customers are given free entry to the store and can easily exit with trolleys or other bulk buys,” Alberts explained. We also added a brand new entrance, improving the front facade of the store with new disabled parking and wheel chair ramp, new sign boards and paint. Progress Meat, our butchery is also now incorporated into the store giving them four times the amount of space than before.” One customer mentioned that he has been buying meat at Progress Meat for years and the new look is a game changer and the prices and good service have kept him coming back. The butchery prices have been very competitive but still managed to beat the other prices in town when money is scarce around the festive seasons. Progress Milling, a leading producer and suppliers of maize and sorghum products, rice, cake flour, cooking oil and sugar now also has an expanded variety of grocery items available. Another one of Progress Milling’s products is Natura Feeds. “The brand

Credit amnesty and property market

>> Banks are likely to push up the cost of credit and lending rates on home loans

This month saw the credit amnesty come into effect which will essentially ensure that certain negative financial information is removed from consumer’s credit records at credit bureaus. The aim of the amnesty is to reintroduce those consumers who have previously been unable to apply for credit due to negative listings back into the market. Adrian Goslett, Chief Executive Officer of RE/MAX of Southern Africa was quoted saying that while the amnesty is welcome news for those consumers as it provides them with the opportunity to once again access credit, it could come at a much higher price. “Previously banks would base much of their credit rating models on a client’s payment history, which will be far less detailed without the information provided by credit bureaus. Without access to this potential adverse information on a consumer’s payment profile, it will be far more difficult for financial institutions to determine their risk or applicants’ ability to repay their credit. As such, they will have to adjust their approach and methods of distinguishing between high and low risk lenders,” he said. He added that this could result in the credit amnesty achieving the total opposite of what they’d hope for, because now banks

with the fact that consumers are already facing other external financial pressures such as the rising cost of living, it could result in the property market slowing down. He said faced with greater risk, banks are likely to also push up the cost of credit and lending rates on home loans as a protective measure. He said consumers already have deposit requirements to contend with and further interest hikes predicted for later this year, so even more additional costs will only keep them from the property market for longer. While the credit amnesty applies to information retained by credit bureaus, it will not affect the credit information that banks currently

feel that they are acting within a higher risk environment and as such they will be far more cautious in reviewing applications and will therefore be tightening their lending criteria and could in fact grant less credit. “Banks said that the removal of adverse credit records has introduced some unknown risks and they agree that in light of this, banks have to tighten their approach to risk. The assumption that the credit amnesty will make it easier to obtain credit is not entirely true as many credit providers will implement far stricter credit vetting processes.” Goslett noted that if the credit amnesty results in fewer loans being granted, coupled

have on their existing clients. Goslett said amnesty will have more of an impact on a bank’s new clients, however, most banks will have retained their own record of their existing clients’ payment profile and credit history, which they will take into consideration when looking at credit applications. He concluded by saying: “Banks will have records of negative payment history, so removing adverse information at the credit bureau will not entirely clear a consumer’s name. Credit providers will still be allowed to keep the adverse information on their databases, whether it has been removed from the credit bureau or not.”

Seshego Gospel Choir launches their second CD

Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za The launch of Seshego Gospel Choir’s second CD to at Seshego FET College last Sunday drew fans from far and wide who enjoyed watching the popular choral group perform old favourites and new songs, such as Happy Days and Seshego Nights, from their new album Taba yaka “It was a good launch that was long overdue. We wanted to take our time so that we can come up with a good product and we did,” Founder of the Choir, Maria Bongwe said. Their

first CD was launched in 2012. Leading clap and gospel choir Lejwe la Motheo from Thembisa also performed during the launch. “Most of our members look up to them and they also brought that aura of excitement. We thank the people who came to witness the launch. We could have launched the CD in the city but chose to launch it here in Seshego because that is where our roots are,” Bongwe said. Members of the Seshego Gospel Choir proudly display their newly launched CD. From left are Slight Mabotja, (board member), Maria Bongwe (Founder), Mapaseka Mokgaphane (lead singer) and Rosina Mokgaphane (board member).

Models who completed their complimentary exams received their certificates. Three models also completed their teachers’ degree after four to five years of extensive modelling training. Forty models from the agency’s branches in Polokwane, Tzaneen, Makhado and Mokopane shocased garments from Foschini and Maria Thom. Barwise said the agency is a youth development organisation which empowers young girls and women to reach their dreams. “This year the agency celebrates five years of existence with more than 80 models trained to reach success and who get paid bookings to work in the industry as professional models,” she said. She called it a dream come true to look back and see how she has helped other young women succeed in this tough industry.

Exciting MMA action at Cage Rage 6 WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com After the sudden cancellation of the Cage Rage 6 mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament scheduled to be held at the Meropa Casino & Entertainment World recently, the event dubbed “The Revenge” will be held at Eksteen’s Martial Arts Rainbow Nation Dojo located at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday. Promoter Henri Eksteen would like to place on record that as of immediate effect his much anticipated Cage Rage Extreme Fighting Championship series will be hosted at his own dojo. In the past all Cage Rage events were hosted at the dojo except for the Cage Rage 5 Championship which was held at Meropa in November last year. Eksteen also announced that his organisation recently received their new updated international license from the World International Martial Arts Association & Organisation (Wimaao) headquar-

finishing the league in a respectable and commendable position. This is according to their Head Coach, Booby Solomons following their 2-1 defeat of Mpumalanga Aces 2-1 at Kanyamazane Stadium on Sunday. The club’s goals were scored by the Malawian Essau Kanyenda while former Kaizer Chiefs striker Abia Nale scored a consolation

ters in Ireland under its founder and president, Nigel McClure. As a result of this, Eksteen MMA is now solely an independent professional MMA organisation which falls directly under its sole international affiliate Wimaao, on which Eksteen serves as the South African President. The organisation has its own Wimaao Board of Directors, referees, judges, and officials whom will run all future MMA events in South Africa. On Saturday 24 fighters from Gauteng and from the Wild West Warriors in Limpopo will be in action to see who will be the last man standing, with R5 000 up for grabs to the winner. The fight to decide the title of Wimaao South African champion will also take place on Saturday. Tickets for Cage Rage 6 are R100 and can be purchased at the door. The MMA action starts at 19:00. For further information contact Eksteen on 081 316 9545.

goal for Aces. The victory sees City in the 14th position of the PSL with 27 points after 28 matches. “We are left with two games and we are no longer worried about relegation, we have to win those matches. We want to finish the league well and improve going forward. We have been losing matches that we were supposed to win and that overshadowed our overall performance in the league. We were not bad campaigners we just committed lots of mistakes. But we saw what we

He added that their focus is to do well against the struggling Moroka Swallows who they meet at old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. Swallows are lying in 13th position of the league with 30 points after 28 matches. “We are very aware of their performance in the league. They are not doing well but they are a good team. Communicating runs in his veins KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com

T

he coveted position of ensuring the City of Stars shines as bright as possible is now being inhabited by the eager and aptly experienced communications expert Malesela Maubane. After recently joining the team at Polokwane Municipality’s Communication and Marketing Unit, Polokwane Observer dug beneath the surface of the ever smiling Malesela Maubane to find out where this passionate communicator’s roots are buried. This proud Limpopean believes that South Africa and Limpopo in general is alive with possibilities. Maubane believes in the contribution that former Burkinabe President Thomas Sankara once made towards quotes to live by, “It took the madmen of yesterday to be able to act with extreme clarity today. I want to be one of those madmen, we must dare to invent the future,” said Maubane. Over and above being the Limpopo Regional Secretary of the Public Relations Institute of South Africa, Maubane says his greatest achievements is most definitely becoming part of the Polokwane Municipality team as Stakeholder Relations Officer and proudly being a part of the team who together are striving towards achieving and upholding a smart city vision

for the capital of Limpopo. While growing up in Limpopo in Mohlonong Village near Ga-Mashashane Maubane always envisioned a career in law, however an opportunity to take part in an English Olympiad while completing his high school career at Dr Moses Josiah Madiba High School made the young outspoken individual who matriculated in 1996 find a new passion and appreciation for the spoken and written word. Being brutally bitten by the writers’ bug Maubane decided to enrol for a National Diploma in Journalism, which he completed at the erstwhile Technikon of Northern Gauteng in 1999. Freshly qualified and ready to take on the world, Maubane was one of the lucky few who walked into the business world fresh out of college and found his feet in the corporate world by means of an in-service training program at the Office of the Premier in Limpopo, starting his journey up the career ladder in the Communications Unit whilst simultaneously laying a firm foundation for his current career and position in the communication industry. Between 2002 and 2008 he worked for Meropa Casino & Entertainment World, the South African Revenue Services and a local newspaper. Before kicking off his current career path at the Polokwane Municipality on 4 March 2014, Maubela served the Aganang

>> I want to be a madman, daring to invent the future every day >> New face ready to conquer Polokwane

Local Municipality from January 2009, ensuring the smooth and effective running of the communication department for over five years. The married father of two boasts corporate experience of over 10 years consisting not only of the finer issues surrounding the world of communication but also of news gathering, corporate publications, media relations, analysis and planning, corporate communications, strategy development and branding, photography stakeholder relations, customer care, event management and internal communications within the private and the public sector. With an eager heart to help and a smile brimming as a testament of his love and passion for his job, Maubane and others like him are sure to pave the road towards a successful and every growing Polokwane with gold.
