emocratic Alliance (DA) Leader Helen Zille is expected to serve the ruling party in Limpopo a severe blow this weekend when she welcomes 41 headmen and headwomen with links to the African National Congress (ANC) into the ranks of the opposition. In the prevailing political climate in which the ruling party in the province is operating with only a temporary structure in place, its branches are reportedly unable to reach consensus in going to a provincial conference which is seemingly

Zille’s spokesperson, Mr Cameron Arendse, said she was due to welcome the indunas during an event to be held at Seraki Showgrounds at Senwabarwana on Saturday. He indicated that to his knowledge the indunas all had links with the ANC and were expected to become cardcarrying DA members. Apart from Zille’s address, provision has been made on the programme for one of the headmen to deliver a speech, he said. Former MEC to appear in court for assault KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com
A former MEC will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 15 November for allegedly assaulting his wife. It is alleged that the former office bearer physically assaulted his wife during an altercation on Friday evening after which she opened a case of assault against him at the Polokwane Police Station.
Spokesperson for the Limpopo Police, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that a case of common assault had been opened by the alleged victim. Mulaudzi said that the supposed perpetrator was given a warning and asked to appear in court in November on charges of common assault. A social worker based at the Polokwane Child and Family Care Society, who wishes to remain anonymous due to the seriousness of the case and the high profile individuals
involved, stressed that it is of utmost importance to report a case of abuse to the Police immediately, to ensure evidence of the abuse is recorded. “While you are there you can ask for a restraining order against the perpetrator, which prohibits the abuser from further contact or intimidation of the victim. If the suspect than disobeys the restraining order, the Police are forced to act on the abuse,” the social worker said. Contact the society on 015 297 3326.

Unpaid sub-contractors lock down rehab centre >> Social development paid R34 million to the implementing agency >> The centre will play an important role in drug abuse in Limpopo RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com
A
ngry unpaid sub-contractors of the recently completed Seshego Treatment Centre, a drug rehabilitation centre in Seshego, locked the premises on Tuesday until the Department of Health and Social Development and the implementing agency, Independent Development Trust (IDT) were able to provide some answers about outstanding payment due to them. At the time of going to press the premises of the R95 million facility was still locked. Polokwane Observer was informed that a meeting was held the same day between subcontractors and the department but nothing was resolved. One of the sub-contractors said that the department confessed that an amount of R34 million was paid to IDT between 25 and 27 September last year. IDT took over the project in May last year. The sub-contractors who were not paid include those responsible for landscaping, electrical wiring, smoke detectors and the nurses’ call system. “Our work is done. There are still final touches to be made, but now we need money,” another sub-contractor said, also citing that since the beginning of the project they had relied on empty promises. The Technical Manager of the main contractor, Keren Kula Construction, Mr Michael
Hofman said they have been waiting for five months to receive payment from the IDT. “We tolerated all challenges that came our way during the construction. We looked well after the sub-contractors. When the Limpopo Government was put under administration we remained on site to complete the project, but enough is enough,” he said. He cited that security services were paid from their own pockets to keep the uncompleted premises safe. According to Hofman the centre was supposed to have been completed about eighteen months ago. Due to IDT not paying Keren Kula Construction they cannot pay the sub-contractors. At the time of going to print attempts to contact IDT Spokesperson, Mr Phasha Makgolane telephonically had failed. Department of Health and Social Develop-
ment Spokesperson, Ms Adele van der Linde confirmed that the payment of R34 million had been made to IDT. Limpopo being one of the busiest drug dealing and drug abuse hubs in South Africa, the Seshego Treatment Centre will play an important role in the prevention thereof. The purpose of the centre is to empower substance dependant clients and to enhance their social functioning and to reduce the crime rate, especially the significant drug abuse challenge in Limpopo. Van der Linde also confirmed that the centre can host 70 patients with services rendered including detoxification; social and psychological services and counselling; occupational therapy; skills development and training; after care and reintegration services as well as medical and nursing services. She could not confirm when the centre would be fully functional.

Disteneng relocation >> Explosive confrontation ends in Police being summoned for back-up >> 27 000 people from approximately 5 737 households spread out over 2,24 km² YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com

rewing tension in Disteneng informal settlement on the outskirts of the city led to an explosive confrontation on the weekend, ending in Police being summoned to provide back-up to municipal officials and local committee members who were prevented from continuing with a relocation process that is expected to draw to a close this weekend. Last week Polokwane Observer was informed of alleged attempted political intervention at local government level aimed at halting the relocation process that dates back to 2008. Saturday’s procedures of checking official municipal documentation against proof of identification documents of residents approved for relocating to an adjacent piece of land was underway until a row erupted on the one side of the settlement adjacent to the area where 59 shacks were gutted by fire a week prior. According to sources certain individuals wanted the relocation to be stopped until all parties expressing the wish to move from Disteneng were incorporated in the process. It was learnt that the relocation to a nearby temporary holding area would, however, continue unabated this weekend. A source indicated the group to be relocated will include people who formerly lived on the dumping site outside Polokwane and were moved to Disteneng last year. A weekly multi-stakeholder
meeting was scheduled for mid-morning yesterday (Wednesday) and expected to lead to the finalisation of arrangements for Saturday’s final relocation, a source said. From information provided by Polokwane Municipality and residents it was established the area is home to an estimated 27 000 people living in approximately 5 737 households spread out over 2,24 km². Entering the settlement the visitor is faced by adverse squalor. From conversations with residents, some speaking through an interpreter, it was learnt Disteneng is a place where residents do not have water or sanitation in close proximity and therefore have to walk to the nearest tap about a kilometre away daily at 05:00 to ensure an allocation or use communal makeshift ablution facilities, get rid of laundry water on the paths that snake between the closely knit living quarters of corrugated iron and not keep any valuables in their shacks for fear of thugs, who are either of local descent or undocumented migrants. Children covered in grime and coughing continuously is not uncommon. As Saturday’s heated debate raged on among the rowdy crowd, the words of a municipal official rose above the noise. Armed with a face mask, she expressed the opinion that the settlement was not fit for human cohabitation and that the entire place had to be demolished. Others would merely move in once the occupants of the pre-identified households up for relocation would leave, she reiterated. What evidently would seem like conditions necessitating the declaration of a health hazard to one is a place another will deem fit calling a home. According to Polokwane Municipality Communications and Marketing Manager Tidimalo Chuene processes and meetings were underway of which the outcome would be communicated to relevant role players. She expressed the hope that the relocation process would take place this weekend as planned.

Last week, Polokwane Observer witnessed furniture of Millionaire’s Lounge being moved from the premises. Maumela explained that the furniture was being taken for renovation.

The Limpopo Police have launched a massive manhunt in search of alleged axe murderer, Mr Thomas Mohoutsi, otherwise known as Zacharia Shitlangu.
Limpopo Police have launched a massive manhunt following the double murder of a mother and her one-year-old daughter from Mapuve village in Giyani on Tuesday. Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, Spokesperson for the Limpopo Police says Ms Mary Magovane and her daughter Refilwe Mohoutsi (1) were allegedly hacked to death by her husband, Mr Zacharia Shitlangu (33), otherwise known as Thomas Mpho
Mohoutsi and believed to be from Mozambique. The suspect allegedly hacked his 30-year-old wife and their daughter to death with an axe on Tuesday following a family dispute. “The gruesome killing was discovered the next day by family members who contacted the Police. The motive for the killing is still unknown and the husband is still at large.” Mulaudzi added that a suspect fitting the description of Mohoutsi was arrested and later released in Phalaborwa. “We have broadened the
search to Mozambique as we received information stating that the suspect might have fled to his home country,” he said. Provincial Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has condemned the senseless killings and has further urged the communities around Limpopo to work with the Police to bring the perpetrator of the evil deed to book. Anyone with information is asked to contact Const Abel Chauke on 082 469 0739 or 015 811 5133.
Seshego Circle Centre OBSERVER officially open for business >> Finally town has come to our people >> Render good services to them Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za
T
he R200 million Seshego Circle Centre situated at the juncture of Nelson Mandela and Polokwane drives in Seshego, was officially opened by Polokwane Executive Mayor, Cllr Freddy Greaver yesterday (Wednesday). The centre, which was developed by the Moolman Group together with two Polokwane based businessmen, Messrs Jaco Nel and Sam Mabotja is strategically placed on two main arterial roads connecting Seshego with Polokwane and the northern parts of the province. “Rooted in our community”, the centre’s payoff line, reflects the importance of Seshego Circle Centre as an amenity and a social asset. “Finally town has come to our people. Our people will no longer have to travel to the city to purchase goods but instead make use of the centre. We want to thank Mr Sam Mabotja and Mr Jannie Moolman for the work they have put in, in ensuring that the centre become a reality,” Greaver said. Centre Manager, Ms Sandra Mohlabi-Moyo said she is looking forward to work with the community and render good service to them. “I am very happy to have been appointed as the centre manager. I promise to work hard and ensure that everything is done appropriately every day,” Mohlabi-Moyo said. The 15 000 m² centre will serve the Seshego residents as well as some of the more outlying areas such as Makgofe, Mobokele and Perskebult. It is not only the answer to a longstanding need for a shopping centre in the area but will also function as a place where

people can gather and socialise. One of the main features of the centre is its community court area where a play area, including a mini climbing wall in the shape of a tree, will provide enjoyment for children accompanying their parents. It will also have a permanent stage area which will be used for community events. Anchor tenants in the centre include Shoprite and Cambridge, a Massmart-owned supermarket chain. National retailers such as Jet, Edgars Active, Pep, Total Sport, Exact, Markhams, Truworths, Identity, Mr. Price and Rage have also taken space in the centre, providing shoppers with the kind of experience they would expect to find at most modern shopping centres. The likes of King Pie, Debonairs, the Fish
& Chip Company and a KFC drive-through will provide shoppers with places to have a bite while they shop. Standard Bank, Nedbank, Capitec and African Bank will also have a presence in the mall as the need for banking facilities is high. “Polokwane is in fact the original home of the Moolman Group, which was established there 47 years ago. While the company now has its head office in Pretoria, it still operates a Polokwane office and its roots in the city remain strong. “Rooted in our community” is as appropriate a payoff line for them as a company as it is for Seshego Circle Centre. “We are confident that Seshego Circle Centre will prove to be the valuable community asset that we hoped for,” Director of the Moolman Group, Mr Pieter Beyers said.

MPHO DUBE >>mphodube.observer@gmail.com Factionalism and purging, born from internal squabbling, have to such an extent seeped into and delayed processes of the African National Congress (ANC) in the province that its Provincial Elective Conference is likely to be postponed until January 2014. Thus far Vhembe is the only region which has managed to hold its elective conference where, two weeks ago, Public Works MEC Dickson Masemola made a clean sweep with none of opponents achieving notable success. Mr Sello Lediga, ANC Provincial Task Team (PTT) Spokesperson at the time of our going to press said it is doubtful that the ANC regional elective conferences in Sekhukhune, Mopani and Peter Mokaba will take place this weekend. He confirmed that a strong possibility exists that the Provincial Elective Conference might not take place in December. “I’m not ruling out the possibility that the Provincial Elective Conference might take place next January although it is still possible that the conference can take place in December,” Lediga said.
A source from within the ANC told Polokwane Observer that the division between Masemola’s camp and that of his his rival, Premier Stan Mathabatha is widening and that their supporters are at each other’s throats over the branch disputes which have caused the delay. “There are certain comrades who are marginalising branches and that has angered comrades who want to enter into the battlefields. This is not happening only from Mathabatha or Masemola’s camp but both camps are playing a political dirty game which will give birth to calamity and factionalism,” the source alleged. A source from another ANC camp blamed the ANC PTT for lack of leadership. Both sources from different camps suggested that PTT must just be transparent and refrain from raping branches in favour of their preferred candidates. “They must allow comrades to choose their preferred leaders and stop this nonsense of raping ANC branches in the name of factionalism,” the source said. Lediga dismissed allegations of factionalism and lack of leadership within the ANC in Limpopo. He also declined to give any further comment.
New Dangerous Weapons Bill KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com A new bill allowing Police officials to arrest persons carrying weapons classified as dangerous will come into effect in January 2014. The new bill seeks to prohibit the carrying of firearms and objects which resemble firearms, dangerous weapons or objects likely to cause injury or damage to property at a demonstration or a gathering. Sporting bodies and collectors complained and queried the new law for fear of being arrested or prosecuted while travelling to and from events with the likes of paintball-guns, antique rifles or swords. Mr Craig Rosser, Manager of Lekana Gunshop in Landros Maré Street assured that owners of antique weapons, swords and sports equipment need not worry about the impending bill taking effect in January. “After analysing the act carefully it will be seen that it only really pertains to the carrying of dangerous
weapons at mass meetings or gatherings or specifically the carrying of weapons for furtherance of a criminal activity.” Rosser, a law abiding gun expert, said fellow law abiding citizens should not fret, but should do themselves a favour and read up on the new and amended Dangerous Weapons Act 15 of 2013. As the Bill now reads it does not apply to the possession of dangerous weapons in pursuit of any lawful employment, duty or activity, including a legal licensed weapon for means of self-defence. It further does not apply to the use of dangerous weapons during participation in any religious or cultural activities, lawful sport, recreation or entertainment and the legitimate collection, display or exhibition of weapons. The new act will enable Police officials to crack down on protestors brandishing firearms, bricks, glass bottles, spears or any objects which could be used to harm someone or damage property.

Massive diamond mining investment for Limpopo WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com
S
outh Africa’s biggest diamond mine heralded a new phase of their already extensive operation in the Musina area of the province with the launch of the construction phase of the De Beers Venetia Underground Project. The R20 billion investment will extend the life of Venetia beyond 2040 with underground production expected to commence in 2021. Venetia is presently the country’s leading producer of diamonds producing approximately three million carats per annum. The mine was opened on 14 August 1992 and is an open-pit mine operation situated close to the border of Botswana and Zimbabwe. The ore deposit rich in kimberlite pipes discovered by De Beers’ geologists has the economic potential to sustain mining operations for decades to come. Therefore, De Beers has begun a major venture to convert Venetia Mine’s open-pit operation into an underground mine by 2021. Venetia Mine and its adjacent Venetia Limpopo conservation area, is a leading example of excellent environmental practise and ecological stewardship. The 2 200 hectare mining area is partially affected by mining operations and tailing dumps and associated infrastructure such as roads, offices and workshops. The affected area, though, is less than seven percent of the 32 100 ha owned by De Beers;

therefore the remaining 93% is managed by the Ecology Division of De Beers Consolidated Mines. During the sod-turning ceremony attended by President Jacob Zuma and Ms Susan Shabangu, Minister of Mineral Resources, Zuma commented that the occasion marked another important milestone in the development of the country’s diamond industry and also the mining sector. “Mining has been the foundation of economic development in South Africa for well over a century. Despite a considerable diversification of our economy in the recent past, the mining sector remains the cornerstone of the economy, due to the number of direct and indirect jobs, its export earnings and other benefits,” Zuma said. He added that as a mineral-rich country, nearly 60 minerals are still being actively mined in South Africa with an estimated 70 mines operating in Limpopo alone. “This R20 billion investment in the diamond industry signals that our mining sector is poised for growth and that the investment will no doubt boost diamond production, from which the country has lost its eminence in recent years,” Zuma elaborated. Shabangu also commended the company’s investment decision, adding that it boded well for the economy of the province. “The launch of this underground mine shows that South Africa remains an investment destination of choice and, through our mining laws, we will continue to ensure that this investment sustainably benefits mining communities and the labour force in the area,” she explained. Mr Mark Cutifani, Chief Executive of Anglo American plc and Chairman of The De Beers Group said: “Anglo American’s roots are firmly in South Africa, and we have been a proud investor here for almost 100 years. Over the last 14 years alone, Anglo American has invested nearly R200 billion in South Africa, emphasising our commitment and making a real difference for South Africa and all South Africans. The positive social impact of skills development, the acquisition of economically valuable experience and the potential to uplift rural and sometimes poorer communities, is what exists here at the heart of Venetia.” President Jacob Zuma and Minister for Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu at the sod turning ceremony for the launch of the construction phase of the Venetia Underground Project.

CRIME shorts Negligence of a firearm goes unpunished The Police official who left his service gun in a public toilet three weeks ago will not be suspended. Capt Ntobeng Phala, Spokesperson for the Polokwane Police said internal investigations conducted showed the official was found fit to carry a firearm and he will therefore not be dismissed. “He was warned and will furthermore be continuing with his active duties, which include carrying a pistol,” Phala said.
ATM Grinders arrested Three suspects have been arrested following their alleged attempt to grind open an ATM in Lenyenye just outside Tzaneen. Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, Spokesperson for the Limpopo Police said the suspects, aged between 27 and 37, allegedly gained access to the ATM through the roof of a local café early on Sunday morning and used a grinder to gain access to the safe. “Passing community members suspected something was wrong and alerted the Police.” Upon realisation that their plan had failed, the thieves fled the scene. Members of the community however managed to corner one of the suspects and severely assaulted him. Mulaudzi says the suspect was then rescued by the Police and taken to the Letaba Hospital for medical attention. Other Police members managed to apprehend two more suspects aged between 27 and 33 just a few metres away from the crime scene. The suspects will appear in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on charges of housebreaking, while the 37-year old suspect will be tried in absentia since he is being detained in a critical condition at the hospital.

All 65 suspects arrested following the unrest at Malamulele appeared in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on charges of public violence and were denied bail. The suspects’ case has been postponed to 24 October for further investigation. Their arrests follows public unrest escalating in the Malamulele area due to municipal issues the residents felt had not been dealt with properly. The incident occurred last week when residents protested in the streets, looting shops, burning tyres
and buildings and demanding their need for their own municipality be met immediately. Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the Limpopo Police says the unrest has since died down and the Police are hopeful that the situation will remain calm.
VW Polo still wanted The driver of the car allegedly responsible for the death of Mr Gary Stephen is still being searched for by the Limpopo Police. A massive manhunt for the vehicle and its driver was launched following a hit-and-run incident that took place on 4 October claiming the life of Stephen who was knocked off his Suzuki Scrambler whilst on the way to a local filling station. WO Lesiba Ramoshaba says the Police are still mainly relying on leads from the public to determine the whereabouts of the blue Polo, believed to be either a 2008 or a 2010 model. “All leads so far received from the public have been followed up and did not deliver any results.” Anyone with information relating to the case can contact WO Len Lubbe on 084 602 2398.
Nigerian nationals set free The two Nigerian nationals arrested on charges of possession and dealing in drugs have been set free, following their case being provisionally struck off the court roll for further investigation. Capt Ntobeng Phala, Spokesperson for the Polokwane Police explained that the reason for the case being struck off the roll is that forensic tests need to now determine the contents of the packets of drugs to ascertain whether it is in fact cocaine. “The forensic tests need to be done before the suspects can be re-arrested. These tests will then determine whether it is in fact cocaine or if it is another similar looking substance like coffee-creamer,” he said. He added that the Police were forced to release the suspects after the court struck their case from the roll and dropped the charges. “We will however be monitoring the Nigerian nationals to ensure similar incidents do not take place until they have been formally charged.” He was asked if the suspects could not flee the country while the forensic test results are being awaited, he replied he could not comment as this route of action had not been predetermined.

It is a serene environment suitable to conducting business away from the ordinary city bustle and home to a host of diverse services. These include a conference centre that is the base for catering company Natural Living Events, a hairstylist, a skin care clinic, boutique and a restaurant. It is also expected to soon have a supplier of upmarket hair products among its tenants. Elsewhere on the premises a
wholesale nursery supplying local landscapers with compost, bark, mulch and plants is due for opening to the public in due course. According to Kotze it is also the only LM Grass supplier in Polokwane. Situated within the development is Natural Living Spa and Wellness Centre, which is discarding its erstwhile Camelot Spa cloak and simultaneously incorporating a new nail technician and a beautician from 1 November. The spa facility now acts as after-hour function venue, affording guests to a champagne and cake party, birthday bash, baby shower or kitchen tea to indulge in therapeutic treats to be enjoyed with sumptuous delicacies prepared by the Natural Living Events catering team at the pool area. One of the emerging entities under the greater group, Natural Living Events caters for exclusive functions with tailor-made cuisine options befitting each occasion or celebration, whether for purposes of outside catering or at the on-site function facility. And having managed the preparations for lunch for 12 000 guests from seven kitchens at the historic Castle in Cape Town in the past, Kotze is expected to be more than
amply equipped to steer any undertaking. Most recently Natural Living Interiors, the interior and exterior wing of the outlet based at Design Square in Industria, has expanded by incorporating Erna Lister Gardens in its operations. Their recent annual summer cocktail party was dedicated to welcoming the entity and announcing new management members. Their A-list guests had the opportunity to stock up on conversation pieces and accessories with a funky edge. The 600m² warehouse is brimming with bespoke furniture pieces and stylish decor elements. Turn to Natural Living Interiors for upholstery, curtaining, blinds, paint techniques, wallpaper and 3D-walls, which is a new product from plastic resin. Natural Living Interiors is an Inovar Floor franchise holder and stocks solid wood, laminated and vinyl flooring as well as a large range of carpets. Natural Living Interiors recently added Easygrasse, artificial lawn popular for a look that requires no watering or weeding, to the products on offer. With a management team driven by concept and creativity, Natural Living Group is surely set to grow by leaps and bounds.

Kry genoeg slaap. Sowat ses uur per aand is voldoende. Ekstra skryfbehoeftes is ‘n moet. ‘n Studierooster is van kardinale belang omdat ‘n mens nie veel langer as 45 minute op ‘n slag kan konsentreer nie. Werk jou rooster so uit dat jy vir 45 minute leer en 15 minute rus. In die rustydperk kan jy buite stap, oefen of musiek luister, maar nie TV kyk wat ook konsentrasie verg nie. Doen wat jou laat ontspan. Stel jou denke positief in en maak seker dat jy jou met positiewe mense omring. Maak sek-

The Provincial Secretary of Naptosa, Mr Joe Mashigo said he is proud to be able to deliver these books to the different schools and that the learners will definitely put it to good use. Cope throws its weight behind Lekota’s leadership

T
he Congress of the People (Cope) in Limpopo has welcomed the ruling by Acting Judge Craig WattPringle that the party leadership as led by Mr Mosiuoa Lekota during Cope’s inaugural congress in Bloemfontein in 2008 was its only legitimate leadership. Mr Motlatjo Thejeng, Spokesperson for Cope in Limpopo said: “We welcome the ruling with both hands. Cope in Limpopo has always supported its legitimate leader, Lekota without any reservation. We are united and we are confident that come next year’s general elections Cope will prosper.” He was confident that Cope in Limpopo will manage to hold its elective provincial conference in December
this year. Thetjeng sentiments were echoed by the Secretary of Cope Youth Movement (CopeYM) in Limpopo, Mr Abel Rangata. “CopeYM welcomes the judgment. This long awaited ruling finally brings to an end the most painful period for Cope. The judgment brings to an end the continuous squabbles and factionalism,” Rangata said in a statement issued on Tuesday . He furthermore said that the judgment also paves the way for Cope to regain its place as the alternative party for people of South Africa. “Cope will now have the chance to work hard and regain the confidence of the people and voters who entrusted us with over 1 million votes that led us to represent them in Parliament. We reiterate our call for inclusive Cope members to
finally elect a leadership for the people who will represent them honestly through an accountable, reliable and incorruptible systematic process of democracy,” Rangata stated. He said CopeYM’s call to unite Cope is informed by its members who expressed solid confidence in Cope in the 2009 national general elections.“Now is the time that the organisation gets fully started on its election campaign without any hindrance or leadership squabbles. CopeYM would like nothing more but to see Cope also getting out of the starting blocks and be a contender in the next year’s election after holding its long anticipated, united congresses that will represent the views and needs of the people of South Africa,” Rangata concluded.

failures of the capitalist system to address the needs of the overwhelming majority of our working class people who remain poor. The 2013 Red October Campaign will consolidate these achievements,” Kganyago said, adding that the main focus of the campaign will be on financial sector transformation. “Institutions like banks, insurance and investment companies must implement pro-working class policies and socio-economic development programmes in working class and rural settlements. In addition the campaign will focus on tightened regulation of the financial sector against reckless lending which perpetuates a vicious cycle of debt trap among the workers and the poor as well as transformation of the banks and insurance companies. “The Red October Campaign has been an important platform for the ideological development of SACP members by elevating the significance and relevance of the experience and lessons from the Great Socialist October Revolution of 1917 in Russia,” Kganyago elaborated.

FOTO: VOORSIEN

ne of Polokwane’s own beauty queens, Palesa Masimene (10) literally jumped with joy when she was crowned Little Miss World 2013 first princess and winner of Best National Costume trophy in the age group 8 to 10 years in Antalya, Turkey where the pageant was held from 29 September till 5 October. Palesa’s parents accompanied her on the trip and proud mom, Mosa cannot stop talking about her beautiful and talented daughter who’s accumulating national and international titles. Two weeks ago Mosa said that this is the last pageant that Palesa will attend for the next two years. This decision became something of the past when the judges said she is a star with loads of potential and that she will definitely stand a chance to be crowned Teen Miss World 2014 should she attend. Palesa describes her latest titles as a dream come true. “I’ve worked very hard for this pageant and came back with the results. I feel that winning is not everything. It is about having fun and respecting yourself for who you are,” said Palesa. She enjoyed her time overseas and said they visited water parks and had loads of fun. “If I can have the chance to be at the pageant next year, I would really be
happy,” she added. Next for her is the Miss Glam Kids Limpopo competition set to take place in December.

ust by driving through Nirvana you get the idea of a close-knit community who at first only served the residents of Nirvana, but has over the years become a busy focal point of profitable, cultural and communal activities. The shopping experience is just as luxurious as the many double-storey mansions reflecting a diverse yet distinctly eastern influence of which the minarets and domes of the mosques are the most prominent examples. The suburb hosts a variety of businesses ranging from national wholesale outlets serving the building and related industries to traders in vehicle accessories, food merchants, a filling station and more. It also boasts a huge vehicle dealer precinct. Street traders offer a diversity to feast on and dragging yourself away from the smell of freshly baked samosas, fresh croissants from the bakery or the spices in the supermarket is merely possible because the fabric shops with their huge stock of enticing textiles await you around the corner.

Raphela wins University of Limpopo nd 2 Annual Business Day Competition Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za
M
r Makwena Raphela (26), a third year B.Com Economics and Management Science student at the University of Limpopo (UL) is the winner of the institution’s 2nd Annual Business Day Competition held at the Anglo Platinum Multipurpose Centre last Friday. Makwena who, with the other four finalists, presented their business plans in wholesale and retail, manufacturing and telecommunication industry, was named the winner of the UL’s School of Economics and Management competition. He presented the business plan of his excising telecommunications company My.Com, an internet, prepaid and printing service operating in the Mankweng and Toronto area. Mr Olabanji Oni, Head of the Department Business Management at UL commented that Raphela demonstrated how to start a business and how to make things work. “Most of the students should learn from him. He is an existing businessman and that gave him an added advantage. His presentation was more practical, it stood out from the rest,” Oni explained. He also pointed out that the organisers are pleased that competition went as well as anticipated. “This is one of the university’s major initiatives aimed at enabling students to gain exposure in the business environment and equip them with necessary skills. I also believe that those students who made presentations learned something as well. With this kind of competition we will be able to develop their entrepreneurial qualities and enable them to develop a sense of leadership that will assist them with future endeavours,” Oni said.
Raphela’s prize consists of a R20 000 goods voucher from Limpopo Economic Development Agency (Leda) and a laptop from the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda). “I am very happy to have won the competition. I want to thank the University for giving us the opportunity and a platform to showcase our entrepreneurship,” Raphela said adding that Oni’s mentorship and the support of Seda and the National Youth Development Agency was also invaluable. He stated his future plan is to become a famous entrepreneur who can venture into any business. “Look, I want grow and I want to see my business growing. I am from family of entrepreneurs. My grandfather is an entrepreneur and he has never worked for anyone. He always pushes me to go big in everything that I do,” he said. The presentation by Messrs Pontsho Munatlala and Sprinkaan Mayeya earned HFM the second position and a R10 000 goods voucher from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Ms Nontobeko Mnisi and Mr Siphiwe Ndou of Quixotic Oriental finished third to take home a R10 000 goods voucher from the Wholesale and Retail Seta (W&R Seta). Ms Fridah Makansi of F-Squared Bakery won a R5 000 goods voucher from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) while Exepetional Cars, presented by Messrs Itumeleng Matlala, Tshepiso Ditshego and Ms Martha Nkoana, finished in fifth place to receive a goods voucher valued at R5 000 from Sefa. The competition was sponsored by Leda, the Department of Economic Development Environment and Tourism, Pick n Pay, Seda, Lepelle Northern Water, the IDC, Sefa, W&R Seta, Masisizane Fund and Absa with Polokwane Observer as the media sponsor.

Mercurius Motors bids Michael Glassberg farewell RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com
T
he motor industry is Mercurius Motors Regional Dealer Principal (DP), Mr Michael Glassberg’s playground where he finds pleasure in delivering only the best service and to maintain a professional relationship with customers. Over the past two and half years Glassberg was known for fulfilling this role at Mercurius Motors and his contribution towards the dealership’s success is significant. But by the end of October Glassberg will trade the Bushveld for the busy Johannesburg to fill the position of Franchise Managing Director of Imperial Holding’s Ford and Mazda product line. “The position entails the managing of all Imperial Holding’s Ford and Mazda franchises in Gauteng, Free State and Western Cape. It is a senior position in the group and my responsibilities are much more intense but I am excited and prepared for a new challenge in my career,” he said. Coming from a financial background at major banks Glassberg is a part of Imperial Holdings for the past eleven years. His first experience as dealer principal started in Makhado at General Motors after which he moved to Bloemfontein as DP of a Volvo, Land Rover and Jaguar dealership. He then relocated to Johannesburg to act as DP
at General Motors after which he joined the team at Mercurius Motors Polokwane. Keeping an eye over expensive brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Alfa Romeo and Dodge Glassberg assured that there will always be a place in the market for expensive vehicles. “Clients are well informed on vehicles; they do some research before visiting the dealership. Buyers concerned about fuel efficiency of vehicles prefer diesel engines as the technology improved in such a manner that diesel engines are good performers and light on fuel,” he said. On the motor industry in Polokwane Glassberg said that despite the current administration crisis Limpopo Government is experiencing, Limpopo still offers potential for dealerships to grow. “As long as you follow the basics of business principles Limpopo’s healthy economy can make you successful,” he said. What makes a good DP? Glassberg said that a DP should always be involved in the dealership and to network with all kinds of people. “A good DP should know the market as well as the people. Acknowledge the dealership’s good and bad points and be ready with a plan to address negative points. Look after your personnel; they form the foundation and biggest asset of the company,” he said. Glassberg cited that during his time at Mercurius Motors he noticed that the friendly and loyal
people of Limpopo make it easy to run a business. “The market is very diverse and managing eight brands has been a learning curve. I learnt valuable things in Limpopo that I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” he said. The peak of his time spent at Mercurius Motors was when the dealership won the Mercedes-Benz South Africa Chairman’s Award for Best Passenger Vehicle Dealership of the Year. “This was only possible by the team’s dedication and passion for the brand and the motor industry,” he said. Glassberg said he will dearly miss the people of Polokwane’s friendliness and that special yet professional relationships formed over the years. He thanked Mercurius Motors personnel as well as his clients for the support over the past two years. PHOTO: RC MYBURGH
By the beginning of November Mercurius Motors Regional Dealer Principal, Mr Michael Glassberg will take up his new position at Imperial Holdings as Franchise Managing Director of the Ford and Mazda product line.

RE/MAX Northland Realty celebrates first year of flourishing trade
RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com
RE/MAX Northland Realty is celebrating their first birthday and looks back over 365 days of success that can be dedicated dicated to all our erson nel’s hard work and passion for the property industry. The Principal of RE/MAX Northland Realty, Mr Wilsie Oosthuizen alauded all his agents and other staff members for keeping RE/MAX’s name high who and helped to build the brand in Polokwane and the province. “It was all done through hard work. We start ed at a slow pace and things gradually came into place resulting in RE/MAX becoming a booming realty agency in Polokwane. Now we are reaping the benefits of hard work,” Oosthuizen said. He added that RE/MAX Northland Realty will not let down on their services. “We created a positive image and we made our mark in the local economy. Now we have to keep up the good work to maintain our image. Those who maintain excellent customer service will make it successfully in the industry,” he said. Over the past year Oosthuizen said he learnt how to treat customers in a professional manner and by putting customer service first any busi ness can be fruitful. “With this in mind we strive towards becoming the biggest realty agency in Polokwane and hope that our customer service will lure home buyer and sellers to our doorstep as the preferred agency in the city.” All was not smooth in the past year and according to Oosthuizen some challenges had to be overcome. “The biggest challenges are services from the municipality such as essential
service delivery, rezoning of property and de velopments put on hold. Though we have seen several 100% loans from banks they maintain a strict qualifying process causing many applica tions to be declined,” he said. Nationally 64% of all mortgages are declined. Locally Oosthuizen said that about one out of every three applications is approved. “The local market is stable with a slight continuous growth. We prefer a steady growth. When the market grows too fast, the possibility exists that it might collapse again,” he said. On the subject of rentals, Oosthuizen said, the reason for high rental prices is the shortage of properties and that some owners is depen dent on the rental income as it is their only income. RE/MAX Northland Realty is the roud employer of seven realty agents who do their utmost to keep clients smiling. “We know what is happening in the market and changes are quickly noticed and our approach to the market is then unctually adjusted. We are also aware of future developments which create the op portunity for us to be the first to get a foot in the door,” Oosthuizen said. As principal Oosthuizen said it is important to support the agents in every aspect of their work. “We believe in the saying that everybody carries the boxes. I am not the type that will sit in my office only to give out orders. We work and play as a team and I support them in their decisions and with every transaction,” he said. RE/MAX Northland Realty offers services in buying, selling and renting and they invite clients to visit their offices to view property available or even if they just want to gain some information on any aspect of the property market. “The biggest mistake customers make when buying roerty is that they do not gather enough information on extra costs and that is why we invite potential buyers to visit us where one of our professional agents would explain the buying process in detail,” he said. Oosthuizen thanked RE/MAX Northland Realty’s loyal clients for their support over the past year as well as the agents for their dedi cation and effort to make RE/MAX Northland Realty a flourishing property agency.

onolo Mothiba, Grade 12 learner of Northern Academy Secondary School was recently awarded the lifelong title of grandmaster by the World Chess Federation, the Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE). Apart from world champion, grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can obtain and it allows Bonolo to coach and charge a fee at provincial and national level. The Common Wealth Tournament hosted in June afforded Bonolo and two other learners the opportunity to qualify as grand-
masters. This is where Bonolo’s outstanding skills made an impression on the judges and he was awarded the covetous title. He also qualified to receive his Protea colours later this year. His passion for chess, a game which he learned to play at school in Grade 6, is something which the school supports. Northern Academy Rector, Dr Sonia du Plessis said they are proud of Bonolo and will continue to support him to live out his talent. Photo: Supplied

Students from the Limpopo Sport KarateKickboxing Academy (LPSKKA) came home with bags of trophies and medals following the recent Maxima National Kickboxing event held in the Springs Indoor Sports Centre on 4 and 5 October. Both the novice and the advanced students excelled in the event and came home with 26 trophies -14 gold, 11silver and one bronze. Sensei Nico Myburgh Snr is very proud of his students and adds that a high level of fitness, stamina, skill, and guts contributed to their success in the Semi, Light and Full Contact Fighting categories. Sensei Henno Vogel, known as one of the club’s most loyal competitors, once again reached the finals of the Champ of Champs category and narrowly lost the event claiming a silver trophy in the finals. Kian Kleynhans won gold in the Light division despite competing against much bigger competitors. Michael Swanepoel, also competing in the Light division, took home his first win and a gold trophy. Mieke Meyer reaped the rewards of hard work and dedication and came home with two well-deserved gold trophies. Nadine van Zyl and Simphiwo Ntluzelo proudly represented their academy and displayed some of the most exciting performances of the day. Van Zyl brought home two gold and two silver trophies while Ntluzelo, a first time novice competitor, brought home gold for the Semi Contact division and silver in the Full Contact division.

Lots of dust and action at Polokwane Rally WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com
T
he Dealer Ford Fiesta pairing of Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton won the Polokwane Rally and at the same time clinched the overall 2013 South African Rally title after the penultimate round over the weekend. The victory was the current SA champion’s sixth win of the season with one round still to go in this year’s championship. In second place was Johnny Gemmel/Carolyn Swan (Castrol Toyota Yaris) followed by Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries (Sasol Racing VW Polo). The Cape crew of Jean-Pierre Damseaux and Hilton Auffray finished in fourth position in their Team Toyota Auris to take the S2 000 Challenge title for older cars. Cronje and Houghton finished day one narrowly ahead of Leroy Poulter and Elvene Coetzee (Castrol Toyota Yaris). However, the situation changed dramatically on Saturday when the Yaris crew lost their power steering and dropped back in the field to give the Ford Fiesta pair an easy victory. The Executive Mayor of Polokwane Freddy Greaver flagged the cars away on Friday before the rally spectacle proceeded to Polo-
kwane Bricks for the first of eleven special stages over a total distance of 180 km on the outskirts of the city. The first day ended with the sixth stage, at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, to give local residents who could not take time off from work an opportunity to see the country’s top rally drivers in action. Polokwane’s motor enthusiasts came out in their numbers in support of the eleventh and final stage around the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. Thousands of spectators lined the route adding to the festive atmosphere that marked the end of the rally. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony afterwards, Greaver said the present three year contract with Rally South Africa has come to an end but he will be forwarding a notion at the next council meeting for the rally to take place in Polokwane again for the next three years. He added that the rally has a number of positive economic spin-offs for the city as a result of the number of people outside the province who visit Polokwane over the two days that the rally is held.

“Die afgelope vyf jaar was wonderlik. Die eerste skooldag as Tommie het ek my voete gevind en besluit ek gaan die beste van my hoërskooljare maak. Tommies se
goeie gees het my sedert daardie dag imponeer en opgewonde gemaak.” Hy kan nie regtig sy gunstelingtyd op skool uitsonder nie. “Daar was baie hoogtepunte.
