Sex sells in Ladanna A new and disturbing trend in Ladanna is that of prostitutes capitalising on the influx of drinkers who socialise at one of the many liquor outlets along the main street.

More than ten women of the night work Pietersburg Street at any given time during the evenings wearing barely-there outfits and big smiles while yelling as possible customers drive down one of the busiest streets in Ladanna. After receiving com-

plaints from angered residents of this suburb, Polokwane Observer decided to see if the new trend is really as popular as it seems. To page 2

Police could face R30 m civil claim KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com The Police could be facing a civil claim of R30 million after a local businessman was allegedly wrongfully arrested, leading to his ill-treatment in the holding cells and an ongoing attempted murder case which he is still facing in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court after two years. The businessman wishes to remain anonymous due to the pending charges which arose from an incident in 2011. “When I went to the Polokwane Police Station the next day to report the attempted assault and theft I was arrested for attempted murder for trying to run down one of my workers with my vehicle.” His weapon was removed and in reponse to his request to call his lawyer the investigating officer handling the case threatened that if he made the call he would only be charged much later the day, resulting in the suspect having to spend the night in the holding cells. “I was taken to the holding cells and spent nearly six hours there before being officially charged.” To page 2

ith the eyes of the world fixed on America for the latest developments in the federal government’s partial shutdown, the ripple effect of such action is perceived to have a possible impact on the rest of the globe. It is believed that no drastic changes would be experienced, but that the American situation could still have less tangible effects on the world. Depending on the time frame for the shutdown, a host of factors would have to be considered when the American tidal wave spills over to other shores. Within the global scheme of things, South Africa may not escape possible consequences. Since the announcement early this week the Rand continued its weakening tendency. At the time of going to press the Rand was at R10,14 against the US Dollar - about the same position as at the end of May - and on Tuesday the Johannesburg Stock Exchange has dropped with 1% and another 0,2% by yesterday (Wednesday) mid afternoon, an independent analyst pointed out. The fact that the Rand was not improving confirmed how weak the South African economy was and that South Africa’s currency has been in an upward spiral of loss the past two years, he added.

Ripple effects of US government shutdown Ex-colleague Robert Davies, who currently resides in Illinois in America, indicated no obvious changes have as yet been noticed, but that concern existed about the wheels of bureaucracy. He referred to American politics being in turmoil and huge concern was being experienced over the degree of unwillingness among the more conservative Republicans to cooperate with their colleagues in government and reach compromises, which was what democracy was about. “It is hard to believe how President Obama is dividing people – especially here in the mid-West people are not at all impressed with Obama.” Most upsetting, he pointed out, was the fact that the majority of people displeased with Obama and “Obamacare” did not know what the latter was all about. It was scary how big an influence television had on the political view of the general public, Davies mentioned. Worst of all, he added, was that big television channels did not in the least remain impartial. Back home representatives from randomly chosen structures of the broader Limpopo society were approached for comment on the pending matter. On behalf of the Black Management Forum (BMF) in Limpopo, Chairperson Sam Maloka said the situation the US government was in affected confidence in international markets. Investors could pull back

in the short term, which would badly affect the American economy, Maloka said. He did not expect the continent and South Africa to be drastically affected. The situation, however, created an advantage arising from the temporary withdrawal by international investments from America, which Africa could benefit from, he reckoned. Maloka, who referred to the last 21-day US federal government shutdown, predicted a two-week breakdown this time round. It was unfortunate for the Obama presidency he said and concluded that “us Africans did not expect a shutdown to happen during his tenure”. Mr Gilbert Mosena, Deputy Chairperson of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nafcoc) in Limpopo and National Secretary General of Nafcoc as well as National Executive Committee Member of the Black Business Council, expected that the situation would affect South Africa. America has always been a trade partner with South Africa which relied mainly on the American economy, he said. Speaking of good relations with the US embassy in South Africa, he mentioned he regularly engaged with American Black Caucus and the American Congress. He was of the opinion that the situation would impact on past efforts aimed at job creation, the exchange rate and the entire Africa with South Africa as its engine.

In his capacity as the voice of tens of thousands of workers in Limpopo, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) Provincial Secretary Dan Sebabi expressed the belief that America faced a terrible pre-recession period which, if not handled with care at political level, might have huge negative impact. The occurrences in America, he reckoned, could be affecting the whole world, but mostly Europe due to its intensive trade relations with the United States. Back home trade in components like mining could also stand to be affected, he indicated. The cost of recovery on the petrol price would automatically rise and that in turn would push up food prices and affect sectors like health services. To a question how the South African society could brace itself against the consequences of global economic meltdowns, he said the need existed for a developmental state that could intervene in the economy through initiatives such as massive investment in infrastructure or community-based public works programmes. Such investment would ensure, among others, communities in poor rural areas being assisted to produce their own food and be sustainable, he concluded. Despite voice messages left for Polokwane Chamber of Business (PCOB) President Percy Mongalo, no comment could be obtained.

From page 1 In a period of less than an hour five girls were picked up by vehicles driving slowly down Pietersburg Street looking for a companion for the night. The availability of cheap accommodation in this suburb is also one of the reasons believed to be the cause of the influx of sex workers to this area. One resident who wishes to remain anonymous revealed to Polokwane Observer that her children can no longer walk to the shops, which is less than a block from her house. “I have young boys aged between 9 and 14 and don’t want them exposed to prostitution, it also worries me because if the prostitutes are here their pimps must be nearby, ready to commit more crimes, she said.” A petrol attendant working in Ladanna explains that these women are merely doing their jobs and creating an income for themselves. “The men drink at the taverns in Ladanna and then

From page 1 During the next 12 hours the suspect experienced what he refers to as “hell on earth”. “I had to compete with bed bugs, cockroaches and nearly 40 alleged criminals in an approximately 4x4 metre space. “From my entrance into the cells, I was simply referred to as ‘laanie’ which is a term they use for white people. The ‘kingpins’ in the cells threatened with constant violence, stripped and searched him so extensively that it could be seen as sexual harassment, after which they stole his wedding ring and assaulted him by pelting his ribs with fisted blows. After this he was told to bring them cigarettes to ensure his safety, which he managed to smuggle into the cells through one of his visitors. “After I was released I contacted the Complaints Commission who were very unhelpful and said they couldn’t do anything because I didn’t have proof.” Following his first appearance before Magistrate Janine Ungerer the suspect was released on warning. The businessman also says that at intervals during the ongoing case, the case was dropped due to lack of evidence and then re-opened again for no apparent reason before being moved to the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court where he will be facing another sitting in his attempted murder court case next week. 115 River WO Lesiba Ramoshaba from the PolokStreet wane Police says he is aware of the ongoing attempted murder case and cannot comment Ext. 16 directly on the matter as it could harm the Polokwane merits of the case. “The suspect has the right to institute legal action against the Police if he 015 293 0208/ feels he was mistreated or unfairly treated. ecurity personnel from Lechwe Protection Services on Tuesday evening found a Police service pistol unattended in the public bathrooms at Platinum Park. Operations Manager for the company, Mr Norman Henry Brown said he was alerted by his personnel of the find and rushed to go and tend to the situation. “Upon my arrival I found a Police pistol on the toilet and immediately contacted the Police to report the matter.” Brown was then given permission by WO Moakeng Mazwi to remove the pistol for safekeeping and to return the firearm to the Polokwane Police Station immediately. “I handed the weapon in to the Police, who in turn said they will determine who the guilty

party is and ensure necessary steps are taken against them,” says Brown. Spokesperson for the Polokwane Police, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba says when any firearm is found it needs to immediately be brought to the Police station. “There are only two places where a Police official is allowed to have their gun. Either safely situated on your holster, hidden when in plain clothes and visible when in uniform and also in a safe, guarded and locked for the safety of civilians.” Ramoshaba says the necessary procedures will be followed and an enquiry will determine if the officer was negligent. A case of negligent handling of a firearm will possibly be opened against him. Polokwane Observer was told by an anonymous source that the weapon allegedly belongs to a WO within the Protection Security Services Unit of the Polokwane Police.

Premier Stan Mathabatha this week assured the people of Limpopo that severe consequences for poor performance in his administration will be enforced to ensure that the province is adequately capacitated with skilled people. Mathabatha reacted to the shocking audit results for 2012/2013 presented by the Auditor General during a Legislature sitting last week. It was revealed three of the province’s departments are among five departments nationally that have consistently received disclaimers. The AG’s reported the affected departments to be Education, Public Works and Health. Other departments in the province that got qualified reports this time round are Agriculture and Social Development. Spokesperson of the Premier, Mr Kenny Mathivha said: “The Premier is very clear that he is not happy with the audit outcomes. He remains adamant that the people of this

province deserve better services delivery without fear or favour. He is going to take drastic action against public servants who are incompetent and failing to serve the people of this province. We are not going to compromise when we deal with what is owed to our people which is bettering and improving their lives.” “Premier Mathabatha is to engage all administrators make it clear that properly qualified and skilled public servants must be appointed to enhance and speed up service delivery in the province. “The Premier has had enough of the excuses. He demands that proper procedures be followed when appointing employees in administration. He also demanded a political will to ensure that departments and municipalities don’t get disclaimer opinions from the AG. He made it very clear that he will not accept lazy, incompetent officials in his administrations irrespective of political association. He also warned that those who loot the state purse in the name of political connections from the ruling party will face the music.”

Mr Jacques Smalle, Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) has begun to engage Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe, MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) about title deeds statistics which revealed that more than 112 543 Limpopo citizens do not have title deeds for their RDP houses. This was revealed earlier this month when Human Settlements Minister, Ms Connie September responded to a DA parliamentary question. Smalle said this means that 82% of all title deeds that should be given to Limpopo residents are currently outstanding. The statistics are based on an analysis of South Africa’s title deeds backlog. Dispute task team to defuse ANC factionalism YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com MPHO DUBE >>mphodube.observer@gmail.com

W

hen President Jacob Zuma is expected back in Limpopo on official government business next week, he could be seen engaging with ruling party leadership after last week’s sudden postponement of regional elective conferences and the appointment of a provincial dispute task team (PDTT). Considering the battle for alluring positions within the provincial ruling party structure and Limpopo government on offer as a result of the ousting of former Premier, Cassel Mathale and his allies on his executive, it would naturally be expected that party processes could be hampered by alleged factionalism and clashes over preferred candidates to take the party further after its December elective conference and the 2014 national elections. It was recently learnt that only regional executive and task team structures in Vhembe, Mopani and Waterberg were prepared for their

elective conferences this week, while cadres attached to 60% of branches in Sekhukhune and Peter Mokaba regions were not meeting eye to eye on issues. This, it was learnt, resulted in last week’s National Executive Committee (NEC) intervention in the form of the establishment of the task team to intervene in disputes. Last Thursday Polokwane Observer reported on allegations of signature campaigns apparently involving bogus members, faction-related meetings and the suspected removal of branch general meeting (BGM) packages hampering processes. Provincial Task Team (PTT) Spokesperson Sello Lediga said: “All the regions, Sekhukhune, Peter Mokaba, Mopani and Vhembe are ready, except Waterberg which experienced disputes that will be resolved in time. The PDTT will ensure that all BGMs are intact with 70% nominations. They must make sure that BGMs constitute branches that are in good standing. We are confident that once PDTT has resolved at the dispute the regional conferences will run smoothly.” Lediga said the ANC doesn’t want to see

its members taking the ruling party to court hence the intervention by the NEC with the PDTT there to defuse factionalism. A party insider alluded to squabbles over the positions of chairperson and deputy chairperson in both Sekhukhune and Peter Mokaba regions where the standing of two emerging contenders, of which one is suspected of alleged gate-keeping, is being questioned. A source in the ANC said the battle between Premier Stan Mathabatha and Public Works MEC Dickson Masemola for chairperson position in the province is heating up which gave birth to the postponement of the regional conferences which are expected to resume next week. “There are certain demagogues who are trying to pollute the regional conferences with bad blood because they can see that they don’t have membership or support from regions. I will not stoop to their levels and mention

their names. We must be aware of political opportunism and people who are dishonest to the revolution. The fact is that both Mathabatha and Masemola are good leaders and the branches will decide. I can confirm to you that Mathabatha will emerge victorious; he has the upper hand. He commands support from all regions just wait and see, the game is over for Masemola,” a Mathabatha ally said. A Masemola backer said: “We are ready to contest and we will rally behind Masemola. We are simply saying that Mathabatha must contest like any other comrade of the ANC who is nominated. We are confident that Masemola will conquer come the ANC provincial elective conference. He is a good leader who has experience in administration and he is politically firm and intelligent.” Independent analyst Elvis Masoga said: “Masemola must allow Mathabatha to lead the province as both premier and chairperson.”

“Is die verkeerslig by Broadlands prioriteit?”

Me Lynette Botes, ‘n komiteelid van

Zero tolerance towards offenders on Lim’s roads

RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com The Department of Roads and Transport (DRT) is up in arms about the large number of transgressions committed on the province’s roads and, in keeping with the tradition of celebrating October as Transport Month (OTM) is geared to become the worst nightmare of those guilty of such wrongdoing. President Jacob Zuma is also expected to visit Limpopo next Thursday when he will be visiting routes R81 (Mogwadi road) and R71 (Tzaneen road) which claim hundreds of lives every year. DRT MEC, Mr Lehlogonolo Masoga said: “We are pleased to be hosting the President of the Republic during the official launch of such magnificent projects which are important to our people and the economy of this province.” Masoga will launch the OTM campaign today (Thursday) at Fusion Boutique Hotel where he will be outlining the departmental activities for October. According to DRT Media Liaison Officer on Traffic, Ms Mootane Kagiso the department will

focus especially on public transport. “During a road block conducted in Seshego over the weekend we already arrested 15 taxi drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and one for possession of false documentation. This year we are going to hit hard on traffic offenders. We will be conducting road blocks across the province focussing on heavy vehicles and public transport but the general motorists should not rest assured as we will come after them as well,” she said. According to the 2012 OTM statistics released by departmental Spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Machaka the department then screened more than 125 000 vehicles on Limpopo’s roads. Hundred and thirty four vehicles were discontinued and 124 impounded. More than 13 000 notices were issued with a total of 971 motorists arrested. With the weekend’s arrest of 15 drunken taxi drivers it seems that the department will have to maintain a strong presence as only one drunken driver was arrested during OTM last year. Of the 971 arrests made 931 were for warrants executed, 20 for speeding and eight for overloading.

K

entucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Polokwane made a difference in the lives of abandoned and less privileged children in the Capricorn District last week. They donated R75 000 as part of their Add Hope campaign to the Cometogether Community Based Organisations(CBO) Consortium at the Itumeleng Drop In Centre, a community orphanage centre in Mankweng. Ms Lindy April, the KFC Trust Administrator who was present on the day, explained that their national Add Hope initiative was launched four years ago. She continued to say that Add Hope is KFC’s national feeding scheme, which in partnership with KFC customers, Add Hope raises funds for South Africa’s hungry children. The initiative is KFC’s corporate social responsibility project and every time a customer chooses to Add Hope to their order, R2 goes to the KFC Social Responsibility Trust. During the handover about 150 kids benefited from the sponsorship through Cometogether CBO’s Consortium who provided a healthy meal to the children at the Itumeleng Drop In Centre. The Cometogether Consortium is a group of organisations who share their knowledge and experience by establishing a network to

upgrade the standard of CBO’s with skills, development and funding. Past Abraham Maila, Director of the Consortium said there is a total of 97 Drop In centres in the Polokwane area of which nine falls under the Consortium’s portfolio. He continued further by saying that the money will be distributed to the centres and will be used specifically to provide daily nutritious meals to the children. Ms Faleluccah Rathaga, Manager at the Itumeleng Drop In centre said she is very happy that KFC chose Cometogether CBO’s Consortium as their beneficiary as they benefit being one of the centres under their care. “We feed about 90 children daily. God is good to us and I want to thank KFC for the generous donation. The children had a lovely day and enjoyed a nutritious meal. Now they can go home with a smile on their faces,” said Rathaga. The owner of KFC Polokwane, Mr Tim Bourdillon said: “The campaign aims to inspire the hope of a better life in underprivileged, abandoned and disabled children.” He reiterated his appreciation towards every loyal customer that donated R2. “Together we can make our R2 stretch so much further and all work towards a country where all children have access to the nutrition they need in order to grow, learn and thrive.”

Stad word snags deur hawelose kriminele regeer

RC Myburgh >>rc.observer@gmail.com

H

Baie

het nie eens identiteitsboeke of paspoorte nie. In Eduanpark is minstens vier mangate se deksels onlangs gesteel.

Die kleingoed gaan besig gehou word met verfprojekte terwyl hul ouers rustig deur die stalletjies kan snuffel. he ANC Youth League (Ancyl) in Limpopo welcomed the initiative by Premier Stan Mathabatha’s administration to commence with the process of delivering learner support material for the 2014 annual calendar. Mathabatha confirmed that deliveries to schools has started this week. Ancyl spokesperson, Ms Onnica Moloi this week said the Ancyl views this as a positive step to overcome the textbook delivery challenges that faced the Department of Education during the past years. A fortnight ago Mathabatha congratulated Education MEC, Ms Dikeledi Magadzi for the sterling work she and her department have done to ensure that the 2014 learning and teaching support materials (LTSMs) are delivered on time. Both Magadzi and Mathabatha confirmed earlier that a total of 6 071 451 textbooks and

Last Sunday saw the commemoration of World Rhino Day and despite more awareness being created about the continuing slaughter of South Africa’s rhinos, the number of poached animals continues to rise dramatically. The number of rhinos killed for their horns in 2013 has already reached 688, more than the 668 poached in 2012, according to the latest statistics released by the South African Environmental Services. The number of rhinos killed in the Kruger National Park (KNP)

this year has already reached 425, mainly by poachers entering the KNP from neighbouring Mozambique. In the past ten days, 25 alleged poachers have been arrested countrywide, fourteen in Limpopo, according to a media statement released by the Department of Water & Environmental Affairs. Among those arrested is one of the most wanted poachers in the KNP. The Minister of Water & Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa recently held a meeting with her Mozambican counterpart in order to curb the inflow of illegal poachers from that country.

WOOD STUFF PrevIOUSly

on national / provincial / local issues

Polokwane Observer spoke to residents shortly after the release of the South African Police’s 2013 Limpopo crime statistics on Wednesday. Opinions on the validity and the general crime situation in the province varied greatly.

We specialise in:

• Various wood finishes as well as solid wood to choose from • We stock a wide variety of doors, handles & knobs to suit every taste • Matching granite tops • Laminated wooden flooring

Mr Kgetlane Lethuba: “I feel the release of the statistics shows the Limpopo Police are doing a good job. The only thing that worries me is the increase in housebreaking figures.”

Me Lanie Colin: “Ek dink die misdaadsituasie in Limpopo is verskriklik hoog. “Die polisie doen nie genoeg om dit te bekamp nie.”

Mr Given Phadziri: “The crime around us is still very distressing. There is too much corruption and too little policing done by our local Police officers. Bribes seem to be the order of the day.”

Mnr Gerrit Ferreira: “Die statistieke is ‘n groot gemors. Die syfers is gekook om die publiek gelukkig te hou.”

Mnr Willem Roets: “Ek dink nie dis korrek nie want die afnames is onmoontlik as ‘n mens kyk na al die misdaad wat elke dag om ons gebeur.”

Ms Linah Kutumela: “The crime situation gets worse every day. I don’t care what the statistics say because I still don’t feel safe if my doors aren’t bolted every night.”

Mr Peter Maredi: “The amount of money spent on keeping these Police officials employed is too much due to the corruption within the Police eating up all our hard earned cash for nothing.”

Pienk materiaal is steeds by hul stalletjie in Mall of the North teen R20 per meter beskikbaar. S

ervice delivery problems at Lebowakgomo are escalating to such an extent that Premier Stan Mathabatha will have no choice but to take drastic action against Lepelle-Nkumpi Mayor, Cllr Ivy Phaahla. Despite intervention by Cllr Lawrence Mapoulo, Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality’s (CDM) to write off R94 million in bad debt incurred by residents through years of inaccurate water billing, the situation remains one where tempers can easily boil over. Residents of Lebowakgomo, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Mapoulo can’t be held responsible for the mess created by incompetent senior administrators and political heads responsible at Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality. Polokwane Observer this week can confirm that there is indeed still no change with regard to well documented and reported challenges such as burst pipes and damaged roads which have long reached a state of disrepair. Last month we revealed and exposed the sad state of roads and other infrastructure following intensive investigation. To date, Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality has not yet addressed the matter. This reporter

can confirm that the streets in Zone A, the oldest of the township’s suburbs are still in a state of ruin as a result of age and neglect. Motorists have to be very careful when using these roads at the risk of damaged rims, flat tyres and possible accidents. Potholes take centre stage, leaving motorists frustrated and furious about the inconvenience and costs incurred. Zone A, with Bester, Harare, Complex and Section S being the most affected is a battlefield of leaking water pipes and malfunctioning sewerage systems resulting in enormous water loss and possible health risks for the residents. Lepelle-Nkumpi Development Forum (LNDF) Chairperson, Mr Phauwe Mphahlele expressed his disgust over the matter. He however welcomed the suspension of Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipal Manager, Mr Freddy Ramaphakela who was accused of alleged maladministration. Phauwe also applauded Premier Stan Mathabatha for suspending Department Head for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Ms Nana Manamela for her failure to have the court stop a disciplinary probe into alleged irregularities in the award of a R900 million tender to associates of former Premier Cassel Mathale. LNDF has also called for the resignation

for Phaahla. “We want Phaahla to step down with immediate effect,” Mphahlele said. Spokesperson for the Premier, Mr Kenny Mathivha reiterated that the Premier and his administration will continue to act on corruption. The Chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), Mr Molatelo Tlabjane has vowed to take on the CDM if their service delivery is not improved. He said this during a Sanco meeting held in Lebowakgomo on Sunday. This follows after some of the residents complained that their water debts have not been written off. Last month Mathabatha met with the management of all municipalities in an attempt to understand the extent of incompetence and maladministration in each. This follows his meeting with the Auditor General (AG) in August. Reacting to the matter, Phaahla said: “I can confirm that CDM has written off R94 million in water bill bad debts incurred over years through inaccurate billing by the municipality. I can also confirm that we have appointed a company to deal with infrastructure. We have started already to fix the problem.” Mapoulo also confirmed that CDM has written off R94 million in water bill bad debts. He was however scornful of individuals attempting to score political points over this matter.

The improvement of the Limpopo infrastructure was high on the list of priorities for Public Enterprises Minister, Mr Milusi Gigaba during his visit to Polokwane last Thursday. Gigaba led a delegation of state owned companies (SOC), board chairpersons and chief executive officers in an engagement concerning government infrastructure projects with representatives from the Limpopo Provincial Government. The aim of the engagement was for Gigaba and the SOC to share future capital infrastructure projects which will be implemented in Limpopo to uplift the province. This meeting also allowed for stakeholders in the province to be able to plan effectively and efficiently and ensure that the plans are part of their provincial economic and growth strategies. The delegation consisted of representatives from Eskom, Transnet, Broadband Infraco, Denel and SAA. Premier Stan Mathabatha also attended the delegation together with his district and local mayors. Following the meeting held at Meropa Casino & Entertainment

World, the delegation travelled to the Seshego Secondary School for the official launch of a telematics project, which consists of an ICT system linked to the University of Stellenbosch. This systems links schools from disadvantaged areas with tutors from the university to help improve the knowledge base of learners. The telematics project forms part of Broadband Infraco’s social responsibility program.

ADVERTORIAL

TRANSFORMED

With the first ever annual Bodylife Transformed Challenge almost coming to an end, our contenders have shown amazing results so far. The Bodylife Transformed Challenge hosted by David van Ryneveld has shown great success, and we are looking forward to the next competition in 2014. David believes this platform given by Bodylife, can assist people in making that ultimate lifestyle change. He wanted this to improve individuals not only on a physical level, but spiritual and mental level as well. The contenders have used all available resources at Bodylife, such as professional advice on training and nutrition from qualified personal trainers, monthly assessments done by Bodylife instructors, spacious functional training facilities with a wide variety of kettlebells, daily spinning + aerobics classes and well equipped weight training and cadio vascular areas. The contestants have been keeping themselves busy in the gym on a daily basis in order to achieve their goals.

Meet two of our very strong contenders aiming for the winning prize of R35000 cash…. Out of a 116 entries, these two are still standing… But there are a lot of contenders hot on their heels… We will have to wait and see who wins the Bodylife Transformed Challenge 2013…

Nicole is a wife and also a mother to a beautiful 10 month old baby boy. Her biggest motivation was to show other young mothers that you can get your body back after children and that nothing can stand in your way unless you allow it. She has shown great improvement in 5 months. She is training with a personal trainer, Elzet Benadie, who has shown her the importance of proper nutrition and training when aiming for a transformation such as this. Combining high intensity crossfit type workouts, together with compound weight training exercises and a rigid cardiovascular regime, she soon realised the hard work and determination it takes in order to accomplish this. She says it takes a lot of commitment and dedication to achieve these results, but with the right attitude and support from Bodylife and her family nothing can stand in her way.

Michael has really taken this challenge to heart and he was on board from the word go… He has been such a great contender from the beginning of this challenge. He educates himself on what needs to be done in order to accomplish his goal and this is what he said: “I have a few trainers at Bodylife that help me now and then with advice - regarding my diet mostly. (Jaco Benadie, Dries Swart, Heinrich Wolhuter, Vusi and Johan Griesel). I am doing a lot of research on different exercise routines to aid in weight loss and found a few programs that were high intensity. One day I stumbled upon Tabata and I’ve never looked back. To make the transformation possible you have to take control of your mind and change your way of thinking, which is the main thing. If you don’t have a strong mind you won’t really cope in the competition because 6 months is a long time. I try my very best to eat as healthy as possible, no junk food like coke and kfc which was my food of choice for breakfast, lunch and supper. I eat healthy over weekends as well which I never used to do - I rarely ate anything over weekends. I also try to train twice a day with a cardio session in the morning and weight training/ Tabata in the evening.

Congratulations Michael and Nicole on these amazing achievements, and good luck with your final couple of weeks left of this challenge!! YOU HAVE TRULY INSPIRED US ALL!!

Jona Mahesu warned that drastic measures will be taken against those found to be on the wrong side of the law. He also said the municipality wishes to set an example to perpetrators by investigating this matter thoroughly. “We are currently investigating this matter without fear or favour. We will leave no stone unturned. Anyone found guilty once the investigation is completed should know by now that they will face music and disciplinary actions will be taken against anybody found guilty,” Mahesu concluded. Madonsela’s National Spokesperson, Mr Oupa Segalwe said the matter will be subjected to assessment and jurisdiction and be tested. He said the Public Protector will apply her mind over the matter.

he matter of a R1,3 million tender awarded by Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and allegedly escalated to R10,8 million has been brought into the public domain by Democratic Alliance (DA) Provincial Leader, Mr Jacques Smalle who alarmed Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela about the matter. Smalle alleged the tender was awarded by the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality to an engineering company, not to be identified pending investigations, to be completed before the evaluation committees could sit to evaluate the tender. Documents provided by Smalle confirm how tender No. 23/2012, initially for R1,3 million, was awarded on 26 September 2013 to said engineering company for the designing and

construction of infrastructure projects in the municipality. Smalle said: “This was way before all the municipal tender committees were appointed. The officials who sat on the Bid Evaluation Committee to evaluate this tender were appointed on 13 November 2013. By the time this tender reached the Bid Adjudication Committee on 14 November 2013, the tender amount of R1,3 million had gone up to R10 million. This is clearly an illegal variation which amounts to a new tender altogether.” Smalle asked on what basis this variation from the initial order was justified. “This is a flagrant flouting of the tender procedures and in the process siphoning public money which could be used to improve the lives of the com-

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng salutes Tiro Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng delivering the second Onkgopotse Tiro Memorial Lecture in the UL’s Onkgopotse Tiro Hall last Friday.

>> One of the remarkable individuals who helped us arrive at the destiny-defining moment of the enactment of our Constitution Prof Mahlo Mokgalong (Vice-Chancellor and Principal of herberT raChuene the University of Limpopo), Judge Lucy Mailula (Chair>>herbert@mailbox.co.za person of UL Student Trust Fund and Chairperson of UL lain former student activist, Abram OnkCouncil), Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and his wife, gopotse Tiro is one of the students who Ms Anna Mogoeng. sacrificed their lives in pursuit of a South Africa that is a truly progressive, constitutional democracy. This according to Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng who delivered the University of Limpopo’s (UL) second Onkgopotse Tiro Memorial Lecture in the venue named after Tiro last Friday. Mogoeng said it takes a person determined and ready to lose his glorious future and life to do what Tiro did. A view of the audience attending the Onkgopotse Tiro “Tiro as a student leader delivered a speech Memorial Lecture. criticising Bantu Education, an education system designed to keep black people in a position of perpetual fear and servitude. His speech angered the university administration and the apartheid authorities resulting in his expulsion from the University a few days later. That expulsion sparked off protests that spread to many institutions around the country. The protests led to the first large scale uprising this country experienced in over a decade since the banning of the liberation movements in the early 1960s,” Mogoeng reminded the audience. Tiro, one of the founders of the South African Student Organisation, died in Botswana in 1974 when a bomb contained in a letter delivered to him by hand exploded. “Tiro was not one to despair from his expulsion from the university in the final year of his studies. He took up teaching position at the Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto. As a teacher, he immersed himself in educating and concientising the youth and the high school Prof Mahlo Mokgalong, PhoTos: herberT students in Soweto of who they were and that Vice-Chancellor and PrinraChuene was happening in their country. which thousands of students said no to Bantu Education. They said no to an education system which sought to trap them in perpetual servitude. Historians proclaim this was the watershed event that marked the beginning of the end of apartheid,” Mogoeng elaborated. “Next year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our progressive democratic Constitution. Undoubtedly much will be said about this remarkable document, the remarkable individuals that laid down their lives to help us arrive at the national destiny-defining moment of its enactment, its symbolism, hopes, aspirations and meaning to millions of South Africans. As we ponder on the lessons and journey travelled in arriving at our constitutional democracy, it is also critically important for us to pause, reflect and take inspiration from the transformative figures and watershed events in our history, which brought us to where we are. Many in our society do not know the contribution made by unsung heroes and heroines of the 1970’s like Onkgopotse Tiro and other leaders who paid heavily for the constitutional democracy that we now enjoy. The personalities that profoundly affected a generation, including, myself and propelled them into action,” Mogoeng stressed. He added that Tiro and his generation recognised that the most potent tool in the liberation of people is education and taking control over their own destiny. “Tiro personified the best in the human spirit. He shaped the opinion, discourse and resistance with intellectual rigor under the most challenging conditions and horrific brutality and paid with their lives. As we pay homage to Tiro and other fallen heroes of his generation who contributed immeasurably to our liberation, we should constantly check and reassess how we as a nation are faring in realising the goals they fought and died for. May we not betray what Tiro and other heroes of this country stood and died for. May we spare no effort in ensuring that unity and reconciliation and a transformed and prosperous South Africa that truly belongs to all who live in it becomes a tangible reality,” Mogoeng concluded.

Wakaberry: A taste sensation to please even the most stringent yoghurt fundi KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com Multitudes of smiling faces depicted the long awaited anticipation of the Wakaberry franchise opening in Mall of the North on Saturday morning. Young and old enjoyed the wonder of frozen yoghurt made freshly and healthily “by combining happy cows on organic farms” with the purest ingredients sourced from the most natural products on offer. Talking was not high on anyone’s list of priorities and shoppers rather spent their time indulging in some of the sweet offerings of flavours and toppings happily showcased by the super friendly staff at Wakaberry Polokwane. Not a single seat was open during the launch but this did not discourage the loyal FroYo (Frozen Yoghurt) lovers from standing around and

enjoying the chilled yoghurt in a sunny Saturday morning, beating the heat beautifully on a scorching morning. As an added bonus, friendly hands of help encouraged the love and explained the processes involved in creating a product with so many different facets, always ensuring the best yoghurt combinations flowing down your throat. very 1st birthday should be celebrated in style and with the assistance of Supakids Polokwane this is a task you can easily delegate to their experienced staff members. This time round the party was being held in honour of Supakids Polokwane and their 1st year of successes. This branch opened their doors one year ago and has since then made their presence felt in the Palm Centre in Grobler Street. Owner of Supakids, Ms Thato Mokwena says it has been smooth sailing for the store the past year, with suc-

cess and popularity flowing in through their doors. “It has really been an amazing year for our store.” Mokwena says she is very pleased with her store and her staff’s performance. “I have always believed in the Supakids brand and knew that opening a party shop would mean growing the brand and getting more clients, not once have I had a doubt that the shop would make it.” The shop has been growing from strength to strength and has since expanded from doing only birthday parties for children. “We now also do baby showers, bridal showers, weddings and any other party you can think of.” Not only do they plan

your party but they also supply all the necessities of a party of any kind. “We will also in the near future stock costumes to make a themed party even better,” says Mokwena and she added that the most popular themes this year have been animals, Cars and Hello Kitty. Her future vision for Supakids Polokwane is to open a party venue for future events. “With our own venue we can use for parties it will be so much easier to bring the various chosen themes to life. Mokwena also says that due to the tremendous strides her store has been taking, she can now look forward to the opening of a second branch in Pretoria East soon.

Trellidor’s product range extends much further than your average security barrier, according to Mr Fanie Potgieter, owner of Trellidor Polokwane. With more than two decades of experience in the steel and in particular safety door industry Potgieter is without doubt an expert in the field who continues to strive towards providing the perfect safety solution for homes, schools businesses and more. He matriculated at the Hoërskool Ben Vorster in Tzaneen in 1993 where after he joined a local steel manufacturer before joining Trellidor two years later. “Through hard work and belief in a quality product I worked myself up to the privileged position of proud owner of the Polokwane franchise. I started as employee then became co-owner and partner and now owner,” he recalled. With regard to their role in the local economy Potgieter said: “We do not only provide a high standard safety product we also provide peace of mind. It is a known name in the security industry and it has proven its endurance in any situation.” Potgieter’s loyalty to Trellidor is what keeps him with the brand. “This is all I have ever done. Since the beginning Trellidor caught my

attention. I bonded with the product and now we cannot be separated. We are market leaders in the provision of sliding security gates and I see no reason why I should abandon it.” Trellidor is no more just about sliding safety gates. Trellidor has manufactured ranges of physical home security and commercial property security products, including security gates, burglar guards, shutters and security screens in a variety of designs to suit all risk profiles, for well over 30 years. “We custom-make every security barrier for strength and integrity and can incorporate most architectural features and embellishments. Our latest product is the Rollerstyle, a security shutter and attractive way to help secure homes, commercial premises and corporate office buildings. The security shutter is custom made for doorways, windows, verandas, counter closures and other applications. It can be manually operated or completely automated for ultimate convenience,” he said. Clear Guard was also recently launched by Trellidor and is a beautifully designed security solution for doors and windows that appears to be invisible while helping to protect against unwanted intruders. The screen door is engineered using an aluminium frame and a high tensile stainless steel mesh insert. Trellidor Polokwane’s clientele is described by Potgieter as people who suddenly became aware of safety or victims of crime. “Most

clients are victims of break-ins or attacks or know someone to whom it has happened. Trellidor is not the most expensive product and the product chosen will depend on his needs. It remains a competitive market, but when clients need a product that keeps up with the challenging South African market which continuously improves on the product offering as new technology and materials become available, Trellidor is the brand to go by,” Potgieter said. When not at work he enjoys his role as husband and father of two children, spending time in nature and doing some fishing.

Among the best events on Polokwane’s culinary calendar this year must be Dijong 4 All Restaurant’s launch of their sushi bar on Wednesday when guests were introduced to Sushi Chef, Mr Tshepo Moetji. The introduction of the sushi bar extends the existing menu to offer, under one roof, a delectable diversity that varies from light meals for the not so hungry to hearty fare for dedicated meat lovers. “With the opening of our sushi bar we aim to create a restaurant for all, as our slogan states. Kiddies meals, salads and something for meat lovers are available on our menu and sushi lovers can now enjoy sophisticated sushi platters prepared by Tshepo while enjoying our elegant yet comfortable décor,” co-owner Ms Marthie du Toit said. She added people should visit Dijong to experience a restaurant with a difference as it is the place where friendships are made over a delicious and affordable meal. Mouth watering platters did the rounds while Moetjie demonstrated sushi making with a twist. “I was trained by the best sushi chef at one of South Africa’s favourite family restaurants.

I love to use different ingredients to prepare an irresistible delicacy. For me it is more like creating a piece of art,” Moetji said. His passion for making sushi is visible with every piece he makes. “I also use new combinations and experiment with new sauces to be served with sushi. Sushi is all about the soya sauce. Without soya there is no sushi. For those who are scared to taste the fish used in sushi, I also prepare vegetable sushi for all to enjoy,” he said. Those venturing to become part of the sushi admirers’ circle are in good hands as Moetji explained how he would determine a guest’s favourite fish which he would turn into a California roll as a first introduction into the combination of rice, fish, vegetables and soya. Moetji does not have any career plans other than continuing to make sushi. “I would love to see myself overseas in a couple of years preparing sushi in a world famous restaurant. I first would like to enrol and complete my studies as chef,” Moetji said enthusiastically. latinum Park and Cycad Centre have since their opening continued to gain popularity among residents of Bendor, Welgelegen, Eduan Park, Môregloed and Ster Park while the convenience, pleasant surrounds and ongoing new development at the two centres have contributed to the quarter’s reputation as a shopping and business hub of choice.

Apart from the anchor tenants, Pick n Pay at Cycad and Spar at Platinum Park, the variety of other services ranging from banking, pharmaceutical and postal to favourite fast food outlets, hardware, book- and speciality shops available rarely necessitates time consuming trips to malls. Both centres exceeded all expectations and continue to improve on service delivery and creating a better, bigger and more convenient shopping environment with convenient and ample parking facilities. Scenes similar to those that happened as a result of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act are dramatically depicted at the exhibition.

Exhibition portrays journey of injustice Xam who hails from the Central Kalahari plays the part of the Quii (First People) or Khoisan who first inhabited parts of South Africa.

Visitors to the Reversing the Legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act Exhibition can expect to be arrested by actors, Gaza Mathonsi and Michael Swann, who play the role of policemen that arrest those not in possession of a reference book (Dompas). WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com A walk down the dark past of life under the oppressive apartheid laws that ruled the lives of the majority of South Africans was dramatically depicted at the superbly produced exhibition that was held by the Department of Rural Development & Land Reform at the Polokwane International Airport for the past ten days. It is more than 100 years since the crippling legislation of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act was passed on 19 June, and still today close to 12 million South Africans lives in poverty largely in the areas demarcated for them by the Act. A difference is being made by numerous government-sponsored programmes, by compassionate individuals and groups. But the wounds are so deep that 18 years of democracy have been unable to fully heal them. For those that took the time to visit the Reversing the Legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act Exhibition that will be moving to other provinces over the next few months, the authentically produced walk through South Africa’s dark past certainly provided those that had not experienced that period in history a real-life look into the past. The show was for free and upon entering the exhibition hall, visitors were issued with a replica of the old reference book (pass book) that was only issued

to the so-called Native people in the country. Upon walking through the exhibition, a portrayal of the earlier life of the inhabitants of South Africa was graphically illustrated by real life actors. Visitors were accosted by actors playing the role of policemen, soldiers, magistrates and the people who resided in the various areas that were severely affected by the 1913 Natives’ Land Act. Interesting information panels on the history of the Land Act and other signs that ruled the lives of the people during those days were on display throughout the exhibition. The end of the exhibition portrays the legislation and steps that are necessary for the Department of Rural Development & Land Reform to reverse the legacy of the 1913 Land Act. The Reversing the Legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act Exhibition is the biggest mobile exhibition of its kind ever seen in South Africa. It offers the general public an interactive view of the last 100 years of South African history since the 1913 Natives’ Land Act was passed. In addition to the 24 shipping containers of artefacts, expo material and props that make up the exhibition, the public are informed and educated by a team of professional actors and performers who bring the past alive – with anecdotes of forced removals, injustice and despair – while also highlighting the progress made in recent years and providing hope for the future of our land. According to the Director-General for the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mr Mduduzi Shabane, the exhibition is aimed at creating awareness, especially among the youth about the journey travelled thus far and the progress made by the government towards reversing the negative legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act and racially related laws. After the visit to Limpopo, the exhibition will be moving to Mpumalanga in October.

t is generally accepted that bigger is better, but when it comes to pocket bikes or mini motos the smallest is by far the best. With a height of nearly 45cm, length of less than one meter and a weight of just over 20 kg, Polokwane Observer took to the local racing track on a mini moto equipped with a 50 cc two stroke engine. Being used to a standard man size motorcycle with a 125 cc engine or bigger, riding a mini moto that neatly fits between your ankles and lower legs was an unforgettable experience. With the helmet on one cannot even see the mini moto between your legs. The unthinkable of a mini moto carrying a 92 kg man became reality on Sunday and to the surprise the mini moto reached a speed of almost 60 km/h. What started off as a wobbly pull away until your feet are manoeuvred into the right position on the miniature footrests, soon became so much fun around the racing track that one could not resist avoiding the pits and just continue pulling the throttle in an effort to improve on the previous lap. There is nothing fancy to mini motos. A framework, engine with pull chain, fuel tank, two tyres and a stop button to switch off the engine, but the fun one can have is endless. QB Racing owner, Quintin Baker allowed Polokwane Observer a closer look at what mini motos are all about. “Polokwane does not have a mini moto club and my dream is to establish a club where young and old can benefit from the fun mini motos have to offer,” Baker said. As a former dirt racer he bought a few mini motos after selling his dirt bike. This decision was made after he got seriously injured in an accident during a race and because of expenses to maintain the dirt bike that just got bigger. “One can have just as much fun on a mini moto than on a big bike. This is actually more joyous because the mini motos are cute, fun to ride and so much cheaper to maintain,” Baker said. Running his own shop from his house in Polokwane is only the beginning of what he plans for mini motos in the city. “I do not want to make money from mini motos or establishing the club. I have a passion for these bikes and want to share it with more people. They should try it once and I promise they will be hooked. By getting more people involved to establish a club we can put Limpopo on the map as several races are held annually across the country,” he said. About the cost Baker cited that a new bike costs up to R2 500. “My advice for beginners is to buy a standard cheap bike and remove the covers during practices. This will prevent unnecessary expenses if a rider falls,” he said. The first mini motos were made by enthusiasts from spare parts found in their garages. They were first popularly used as “pit bikes”, for drag racers to travel around in the pits during races in the late 1950s. They were very useful for this purpose, as they could manoeuvre very well in the tight pit roads, fit in about the same space as a small bicycle in a trailer or pickup, and they were faster than most previous forms of transportation. As racers brought them home and used them around their neighbourhoods, many children liked the idea of having a mini moto and a new era of bikes was born. For more information on mini motos or to get involved in establishing Polokwane’s own mini moto club, contact Baker on 076 498 2069.

Agency: Living Large Properties What advice do you have for first time buyers? >> Make sure the process of buying a property is explained thoroughly To what do you ascribe your success as property agent? >> I am professional, sympathetic and understanding How is the market likely to change over the next five years? >> I think we just bottomed-up and therefore we are on a rise.

Integriteit is ononderhandelbaar by Aïda.”

10 Ways to Feel at Home in Your New Neighbourhood When you buy a new home, you’re also taking ownership of your place on a street and in a community. Kevin Mountjoy, National Sales Sanager at ooba, South Africa’s biggest bond originator, says that there are lots of practical and social things that you can do to help you move into your new neighbourhood. 1. Get to know your neighbours. Introduce yourself to the people in the houses or apartments on either side of yours, as well as opposite, if there is one. Let them know when you’ll be moving in, and give them your contact details and take theirs, if they’re happy to provide them. 2. Introduce yourself to the local residents’ association or body corporate, and sign up for any newsletters or email groups. 3. Get your utilities sorted out. Sign up with the relevant providers to have the water, electricity, gas, phone and internet put into your name. For municipal bills, you will need to go to your nearest customer service centre with a valid ID, details of next of kin, your banking details, payment for the required deposit, your offer to purchase or deeds document, your meter numbers and the latest readings, your contact details and the completed Application for the Supply of Water and Electricity form. Also find out whether your area has a recycling pick-up or identify the nearest dump that you can take your recyclable waste to. 4. Go into your bank and switch branches so that any deliveries come to the most convenient location for you. Remember to take note of your new branch code for future electronic transfers. And register your new address with anyone who sends you bills, so that you don’t lose out on vital information that should be coming your way. 5. Look at the websites for the Rotary Club, The Lions Club or the Round Table Club for branches in or near your area. By getting involved in charities like these, you can actively participate in improving the lives of people living in your community. 6. Sign up with an armed response company that has a high presence in your neighbourhood. Usually, the more people that go with a particular provider, the more cars they will allocate to the area, and the quicker their response time will be. Assess the security levels of other houses on the street, and attempt to match them. And find out from the local police station if there are any particular types of criminal activities you should be vigilant for. 7. Find out about the local healthcare providers like doctors, dentists and vets, as well as the nearest emergency room. 8. Work out your quickest routes to your work and your children’s schools – but remember to test these in rush hour so that you avoid surprise bottlenecks. Also, find out about the public transport offered in your area – there is growing, quality public transport infrastructure in South Africa, and you might find that you are pleasantly surprised by the convenience. 9. Contact your insurance company to make sure that your policy is aligned with the type of security that you have in your new home, and with the area that you are now living in. Ensure that you are covered for your move and during any planned renovations. 10. Do some research into courses and classes offered in your area. Yoga or pottery, for example, are great ways to make new friends for you and your kids. “Moving into a new house is so much simpler and less stressful if you have a sense of belonging there,” says Mountjoy. “By doing some of the things we’ve suggested here – especially if you do them before you move in – you will find that there is less admin and more joy in settling in to your new home.”

Ask the expert about cancer MARIËTTE SNYDER >> mariette.observer@gmail.com Rumours and theories abound about food, lifestyle choices and the role genetics play in causing cancer. Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), Ms Sue Janse van Rensburg will, at the invitation of Relay for Life committee member, Ms Sonja Randall,

present an informative talk regarding the topic. She will answer questions as well as provide a list of products safe for use by the whole family and a list of products to be avoided. The event is set to take place on 25 October at 10:00 at Bolivia Lodge and tickets cost R100 per person or R1 000 for a table of ten. Tickets will be available at Cansa’s offices in College Street or at Bolivia Lodge from 8 October.

The book titled ‘Lien Se Lankstaanskoene’ tells the story of the eldest child in a dysfunctional household where her father, a lawyer is sentenced to a jail term as a result of stealing from a trust fund under his control. Her mother reverts to the abuse of alcohol in order to handle the situation and Lien reverts to begging on street corners in disguise to care for her younger siblings and mother. Despite the challenging circumstances, Lien manages to turn around the position of her family and finds peace within herself to help achieve her goals in life. Mitchell House Grade 12 learners, Ben Harris and Juliet Mawere said they enjoyed reading the book and it was an absolute pleasure to get to meet the author.

T

he Ugandan national cricket team scored a double against the Limpopo Impalas by defeating the hosts in both their Twenty20 warm-up fixtures at the Polokwane Cricket Club on Saturday. After winning the toss and sending in the Impalas to bat first in the morning fixture, the hosts could only manage to score 92 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Uganda’s, Henry Senyodo was on song with the ball in taking 5/19 in four devastating overs. During their turn to bat, Uganda made light work in chasing down the winning total to score 95/5 after only 11,1 overs. Limpopo’s best bowler was Landré Coetsee, who took three wickets for 15 runs in three overs. Limpopo Impala Cricket (LIC) used the festive atmosphere that prevailed at the ground to unveil their new logo and kit during the luncheon interval. Ben Benzien was also named as the new Impala coach until the end of the 2013/14 cricket season. Both sides made changes to their teams for the second match, with Uganda again winning the toss and sending in the Impalas to bat first. This time the Impalas managed to post a more respectable total of 136/3 with Francois Louw (40 off 30 balls) and Andrew Galloway (52 off 26 balls) getting among the runs.

Uganda once again successfully chased down the winning target to reach 137/5 in 17,1 overs with their captain, Davis Karashani leading the way with a well-played 48 runs off 28 balls. Ugandan coach, Johan Rudolph, a former Impalas coach thanked LIC for their hospitality and expressed his willingness to visit the province in the future for a 50 over match sometime in December. LIC would like to thank their sponsors and the supporters that helped make the past Saturday a day to remember. The Impalas will be in action again from Saturday to Monday at the Polokwane Cricket Club when they take on the KwaZulu Natal Coastal side in a Rural League three-day fixture.

It was heartbreak for the Limpopo Blue Bulls women rugby team for the second consecutive year when they lost the B-division Currie Cup final 41-20 against a determined Griquas side in East London last Saturday. Earlier in the season, Limpopo beat Griquas convincingly by 55-24 en route to the finals. However, they were unable to repeat the victory and have now lost their second final in two years. Although Griquas beat them convincingly in the final, Limpopo’s women managed to score four tries through Clara Magakwe (2),

Rights Mkhari and Mpho Moloto. Last year Limpopo came unstuck against the Pumas after also defeating them in the league phases of the competition. According to their coach, Kobus Redelinghuys the team remains positive despite another setback in the final. “The girls are obviously disappointed after losing the final and wanted so much to bring the trophy back with them to Limpopo. They will learn from their mistakes, especially in the scrums and will come back as a much stronger team for the Currie Cup season in 2014,” Redelinghuys explained after the long journey back from East London.

Polokwane City Football Club ready for Kaizer Chiefs

Our physical trainer Eduardo Schoeler is acting as interim coach. We don’t want to rush the appointment. We want someone who understands the club and knows what we need,” Baloyi said. Asked about the match day logistics in response Baloyi said the gates will open at 15:30 for the 20:15 kickoff. “We are calling everyone from the province to come in the numbers because it will be our first time playing our home game against a big team like Chiefs which has a strong following nationwide. Their fans will fill up the stadium. Our supporters’ presence will be valuable,” Baloyi said.

eter Mokaba Stadium is expected to be abuzz when soccer fans descend on the venue to view Polokwane City Football Club encounter the mighty Kaizer Chiefs in their last 16 round of the Telkom Knockout Cup on Saturday. City, who won their first match of the Premier Soccer League last week will be hoping to repeat the result against Chiefs. Newly appointed Spokesperson of the club, Patrick Baloyi said they are well prepared to take on Kaizer Chiefs

on Saturday. “A major upset is on the cards. We are more than prepared for the game. We want to bring another smile to the faces of people of the province and supporters of the club. The exciting thing is that players don’t need motivation when playing against a team of Kaizer Chiefs’ calibre. It is a good team with quality, but they are wounded and desparate for a win and we are more than ready for them,” Baloyi said. He also added that the team has not appointed a new coach after partying ways with Duncan Lechesa last month. “We have not appointed anyone.

n anticipation of graduating to her third Dan, karate Sensei Annatjie de Jager allowed Polokwane Observer to join her in taking a look into her sport career spanning over 30 years. De Jager started her sporting career when she was in Grade 8 and 32 years later she is still fighting fit and ready to take on opponents more than half her age. Not only is she a dedicated karate and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) coach but also a qualified referee, officiating her first match during the recent MMA Cage Rage 4 competition held by her mentor and colleague, Henri Eksteen. Her list of achievements

includes training under Sensei George Love in 1981 and then reaching her brown belt in karate in 1985. During the next two years De Jager worked ceaselessly on obtaining her first Dan black belt, which she achieved while being graded with a broken hand. After years of non-involvement in the karate scene, De Jager was awarded her 2nd Dan in 2006 under the watchful eye of Sensei Johan Roets, President of JKA South Africa. Along with various Kata first place medals under her karate belt, De Jager was also awarded with Limpopo provincial colours in 2007. Another two years down the line she qualified to take part in the World Championships which took place in Durban from 2-6 July in 2009. 2013 was a year of new beginnings for De Jager, seeing her kick off the year training with Soke Henri Eksteen (8th Dan) at the African International Bushido Freestyle Karate Dojo and MMA Institute. A life with karate as one of the main facets is not as easy as some think it is. “Karate is more than just strength and fighting, it’s 10% physical strength and 90% mental power.” After 17 years in the Police, this old Captain decided to hand in her service pistol in exchange for a life

of sport, focussing mainly on training children in the art of karate. “I have always felt that karate gives children self-control and builds up their self-esteem. It is also known as the only art that trains both sides of your brain.” De Jager explains that she has in the past started training children who have had various forms of Attention Deficit Disorders and after six months a huge change can be noted in their behaviour and concentration span. De Jager also recently joined forces with Eksteen at his Martial Arts Rainbow Nation Dojo and serves the club as assistant to the head coach, specialising in the coaching and building of young karatekas. “I love the military style discipline that goes along with karate and martial arts; it reduces the amount of opportunities children have to do wrong and keeps them off the streets.” De Jager is happy about the self-defence aspect of her job as well. It is very important for women and children to know how to defend themselves in a dangerous or life-threatening situation. After her many years of activity on the local karate scene, De Jager has come to realise that karate is not a seasonal sport like rugby or cricket; it’s an art form and a way of life.
