Cosatu to act if Premier and Exco ignore 31 demands From page 1 told Polokwane Observer that they would not march a second time to have their demands on the various issues heard. If it went by without being responded to, the federation in Limpopo would embark on rolling mass action to call for the resignation of Mathabatha and his Exco in the same manner Cosatu did with former Premier Cassel Mathale and his executive. Cosatu addressed several compelling issues in two documents handed to acting Premier Rudolph Phala when the masses gathered below the bastion of Mowaneng in the sweltering sun around noon that day. Phala undertook to raise the issues with Mathabatha upon his return from China the following day. The documents, Twala indicated, were the result of extensive consultation with affiliates aimed at consolidating demands based on matters of concern to Cosatu members. The mandate to march followed the last Cosatu Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting towards the end of September. Most crucial to Cosatu is the immediate total withdrawal of the national intervention team in terms of Section 100(1)(a) rule from the province. Another issue requiring attention, according to Cosatu, is the shortage of medicine, attention to equipment in need of repair and long waiting periods at healthcare facilities in the province. Twala raised the view that patients should wait 30 minutes to the utmost upon arrival at a healthcare facility to be attended to. Anything longer than that put patients at risk. On the many challenges with regards to equipment and medicine shortages he said excuses were unacceptable. “The time for excuses is over.” Many political changes had characterised the Department of Health – not unlike other departments - and it was crucial for the MEC to be kept in the position to create stability, he reckoned. While vacancies for nurses and doctors prevailed within the Department of Health, similar circumstances were experienced in other government departments where key positions were not being filled. The situation, he pointed out, has prevailed since the arrival of the administrators in Limpopo. In one of their two memoranda of demands Cosatu in the province raised the matter of de-

tenderisation of the state and on this Twala said the federation did not believe in profiling services through tenders. He raised the opinion that government departments and municipalities should take over the provision of services in cases of it not being a specialised service to be rendered. In the same vein they would want to see government doing away with tenders for feeding schemes at schools across the province and rather empower communities to establish cooperatives to take over that responsibility in order to reduce poverty and unemployment, he indicated. Paid parking by government employees at their places of employment or insufficient parking bays on government premises also remained a headache for Cosatu members and Twala suggested it be removed and a way found to address the problem. On Cosatu demanding the nationalisation of private prisons he said the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) was very clear on the problems within such institutions and suggested that government should run its own correctional facilities. Another pressing matter which Cosatu highlighted is that of municipalities not doing well in terms of governance and service delivery, a concern to affiliate South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu). Referring to traces of alleged corruption and maladministration in many of the local government structures in the province, Twala reiterated the demand for six municipalities across Limpopo to be put under administration. The fact that the majority of municipalities was struggling could be attributed to the lack of capable leaders – both politically and administratively – being entrusted with critical positions, he indicated. He said generally they were not happy with the appointment of individuals in crucial posts in departments and parastatals without the necessary screening being done beforehand, which was a tell-tale sign that the relevant processes were not being followed. Academic qualifications being doubted are those of the Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Airports Authority Limited (Gaal), a claim made in the one memorandum and a follow-up media statement which Twala issued on Monday. Cosatu in Limpopo demanded of the Premier to suspend Gaal CEO Thulani Zulu with immediate effect or that he resigned and of the Police and Public Protector to urgently investigate his qualifications, Twala stated. Zulu’s office indicated he was not available on Tuesday. A message on his cell phone for comment to Polokwane Observer’s story was not responded to.

Despair over H2O crisis YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com

ust as some residents exhaled again after experiencing the brunt of the weekend’s countrywide load shedding, they were confronted with warnings of the city’s water supply being under strain a day later. All is not doom and gloom though, as Polokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng announced that approval was awaited on an application to the Department of Water and Sanitation for getting additional water to the city. She was briefing the media on her first 100 days in office during a session held at the time of going to press. This week the realities of the demand for a life-sustaining resource apparently surpassing the supply and ageing infrastructure challenges had an effect on already burdened ratepayers and local business. On Monday a health club reportedly informed its members by bulk text message that the gym was closed due to water shortages. The same day already burdened ratepayers were urged by a media statement issued by Polokwane Municiaplity Communications and Marketing Manager Tidimalo Chuene

to use water sparingly. By then water supply was under strain and could not cope with the demand. The levels of reservoirs were very low, resulting in water shortages in some residences in high lying areas, she stressed. “The problem persists even though Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) is pumping more water to Polokwane. Residents and members of the public are urged to use water sparingly and refrain from watering gardens.” At the time water reservoir levels were at a reading that saw the 30 mega litre reservoir empty, the 50 mega litre reservoir being left with 10% of its capacity, the one in Potgieter Avenue with 88%, the one in Extension 34 with 95% and the one serving Seshego with 52%. Chuene concluded with the undertaking of supplying water tankers to areas where shortages were being experienced as and when necessary. By Tuesday things were looking up. Then the 30 mega litre reservoir had filled up to 19% of its capacity, the 50 mega litre reservoir having 4% more than the previous day, the one in Potgieter Avenue was at 92% of its capacity, in Extension 34 was filled up to 95% of its capacity and the reser-

voir in Seshego was filled up to 65% of its capacity. Early on in the weekend a resident of Thornhill alerted Polokwane Observer to a crisis that has been going on for at least three to four days towards month end over the past three months. The source alluded to the fact that the situation has led to a health hazard relating to ablution facilities not working properly. He indicated when confronted about the situation, the municipality informed him that the reservoir was empty. “Why wait until it gets empty before re-filling it? Is there no monitoring of water levels in Polo kwane? We are tired and frustrated as this is now a recurring problem and the municipality doesn’t seem to be interested in finding a solution. I have been patient until now but my patience is running out.” Asked for comment Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Malesela Maubane said the demand for water surpassed the supply in Polokwane even though LNW was supplying more water to the city. He alluded to earlier announcements for plans to have ageing infrastructure and water supply addressed.

Boy Mamabolo threatens with legal battle YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com A matter between African National Congress (ANC) Milo Malatjie Branch Chairperson Boy Mamabolo and one of Polokwane’s most prestigious institutions could end in court if his threats to obtain an interdict against the private school get carried through. Having recuperated from injuries inflicted during the much-publicised Waterland shooting in mid-September, he has now taken up the fight to secure a space for his six-year-old son in a local private school of choice where his name was put on a waiting list. In an interview with Polokwane Observer this week Mamabolo indicated his threatening legal battle was based on allegations of a race card being played by the school. He explained that he intended enrolling his boy whose name is being withheld - with Mitchell House Preparatory School but has been turned away even after being among the first to submit an application in May this year. He explained he wanted to secure the best education for his son and therefore had his hopes on Mitchell House. After having passed the assessment in mid-August there had been no news forthcoming on the application and even while spending three weeks in hospital

recovering from the gunshot wounds he was informed by his mother that there had been no feedback as yet. He mentioned he became worried. Upon further enquiry last month he had been told that his son was on a waiting list because the school had to accommodate other kids first in the light of an overwhelming number of applications, he said. Later he was informed that the school had to give first preference to the siblings of existing learners, he added. According to him he was denied the privilege of seeing the names of the intakes for Grade 1 for next year. As the matter could not be amicably solved during a meeting with Mitchell House Headmaster Andrew Cook on 16 October, he demanded to address the School Governing Body (SGB) as the relevant structure to take the final decision, Mamabolo reckoned. He added that he was still awaiting response to his request. He had given the school until 15 November to get back to him. Wanting to pursue all possible options he said he now intended taking the matter further by considering the legal route of interdicting the institution - which would impact on the Grade 1 school year - until his son’s application was being reconsidered. Although keeping in mind that the school is a private

institution, he had already contacted the Department of Education early this week, he indicated. The conversation turned to the incident of 14 September, which Mamabolo referred to as a life-changing experience that opened his eyes and made him realise God gave him a second chance. He did not want to comment on the pending court matter for which he had been subpoenaed later this month as it was sub judice. He, however, was willing to state that he would not retaliate but expressed the hope that justice would be served. In his response Cook said he agreed to Mamabolo acquainting himself with the acceptance list on one condition that if Mamabolo found there was no racial bias to the list as he claimed, Mamabolo would agree to an unconditional apology for casting aspersions on the phase head’s veracity and the integrity of the institution itself. That, in the presence of witnesses, Mamabolo agreed to do, he said. On scrutiny of the acceptance list it was clear that there was no evidence of racial bias and Mamabolo gave an unreserved apology, according to him. Cook expressed surprise at Mamabolo’s account of events which he reckoned was at such odds with what happened at their meeting.

Alle dienste by die munisipaliteit is gister (Woensdag) hervat,” sê Selokela.

emands for the immediate withdrawal of the national intervention team and having six municipalities across the province put under administration were some of the major issues contained in memoranda handed over to the provincial government on behalf of affiliates of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo when taking to the streets of Polokwane with a mass march last Thursday. An estimated more than 4 000 Limpopo workers participated in the mass action, joined by alliance partners African National Congress (ANC) and South African Communist Party (SACP). After getting off to a rickety start following a delay of some two and a half hours and withstanding the scorching heat, a colourful mass made their voices heard. Their placards – some more profound than others - addressed an array of issues that varied from wanting to see an end to the state tender system to regulating health fees. Addressing a gathering that ended at the Premier’s Office after the march from SABC Park in the main street, Cosatu Provincial Secretary Gerald Twala demanded the departure of the national intervention team within 30 days as stipulated in the one memorandum and a three-week formal response to the second containing 30 pressing demands of concern to Limpopo’s workers. Copies of the memoranda were handed to Provincial Treasury MEC Rudolph Phala, who stood in for Premier Stan Mathabatha and undertook to bring the documents to the Premier’s attention upon his return from a mission to China the following day. Nigeria Church survivors speaks out HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Fauna Park resident Rachel Sithole is one of the South Africans who survived the recent collapse in Nigeria of a building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations. Eightyfour South African citizens died in the incident. Sithole, who was trapped under the debris for 24 hours said she was convinced that she would come alive from the disaster. Recalling the nightmare experience shared with hundreds of worshippers who were trapped she said: “It was difficult for us. Everything just happed so fast. We were seated in a dining hall and just about to have our meal. We heard a huge sound and then the building and the surface on which I was standing collapsed. People panicked and were crying for help. We had to gather ourselves, we prayed and the prayer sustained us.” Sithole who sustained injuries to her leg and her hip said she was lucky to have come out alive after so many people died during the

incident. “It was the first time I visited Nigeria and I want to thank God for giving me a second chance in life,” she said. Fellow survivor, Betty Mashilo from Phokoane Village in Jane Furse gave thanks to God for saving her after she was trapped for 13 hours. “It was my second time going there to worship. I went there last year December to seek help after I was diagnosed with womb cancer. I could not get help here at home. I went to several doctors here at home and I could not get healed. Someone told me about the church, Prophet TB Joshua and how he has helped lots of people in my situation. I then decided to go back in September this year to thank him for saving my life and healing my womb and also to enjoy fellowship with other worshippers,” Mashilo said. She said when the incident happened she thought of her family, especially her children. “We were just sitting at the dining hall waiting to be served and all of a sudden the building collapsed and there were a lot of people screaming. I was shocked because I have never been in that kind of situation before. We were rescued by divine power,” Mashilo said. Khathutshelo Ramovha from Tshirolwe village outside Makhado was in Lagos to get spiritual healing from Joshua at the time of the incident. He recalled the huge relief he felt when he realised that his life had been spared. Ramovha described the incident as one those he would rather forget. “It was traumatising. We spent nearly 13 hours inside the building without help. Because of the Lord we were saved and I would like to thank Him for giving me a second chance to live.” Ramovha is the author of a book titled ‘He is more than just a God’. He explained that his book encourages people to become Christians and also enlightens others about the power and second coming of Christ.

K

holofelo Lekganyane, Miss Limpopo 2014 and well known local activist against women and child abuse nearly became part of the crime statistics on Saturday evening when she narrowly escaped the claws of three suspected armed robbers who held up and robbed her at a traffic light in Mankweng. “I feared for my life as I remained quiet behind the steering wheel listening to the robbers’ conversation about whether they should take my car or not. It continuously flashed through my mind that they are either going to rape or kill me,” Lekganyane said on Tuesday. Returning from Venda on Saturday evening she was making her way back to the University of Limpopo, where she is a student, she stopped at a traffic light close to campus. “One of my doors was probably not properly closed so the automatic door locking system did not lock all the doors. It was around 22:00 when three men suddenly approached my vehicle from behind. Two of them got into my car with one of them pointing a knife at me. The other one scavenged through my belongings,” she said. The men allegedly had a conversation on whether they should take her vehicle or not. “I just kept quiet and thought about the worst that could happen to me. One of them demanded the car keys,” she said. Lekganyane’s life was saved when a patrolling Police vehicle approached the scene. “When the men saw the Police they scrammed. The Police gave chase but the robbers managed to get away. Police said they were probably foreigners,” she cited. Lekganyane was robbed of her cell phone, clothes and food she bought earlier. “It could have been worse. I guess I am lucky to get away with it unharmed and decided not to open a case with the Police,” she said, cautioning drivers to be alert when they stop at traffic lights. The incident occurred almost a week after she donated blankets, food, clothes, shoes and cooking utensils to Emily Seimela from Extension 78 whose house was allegedly burnt down by her son. “I was devastated when I heard about the incident and needed to act. I also plead with other people who are in a position to help, to extend a helping hand,” she said. Seimela was also provided with a new mattress and a new structure was erected next to the demolished shack for her to stay in.

Ext 73 processes still unfolding YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com A mass gathering by concerned residents of Extension 73 re-elected a new preferred Project Steering Committee (PSC) after last week’s uproar that ended in intervention by the Speaker of Polokwane Municipality. Members of the community were initially against the appointment of the PSC and a Community Liaison Officer (CLO) whom they accused of being associated with Ward Councillor Tebogo Mojapelo, even before last week’s start of a multi-million Rand roads construction project in the area. Prior to the appointment of the CLO they already expressed dissatisfaction with the councillor allegedly exercising her preferences for names of members to serve on the PSC. The preferred CLO was forced off the site by angry community members last Tuesday at the onset of the project, demanding that someone from their extension should be appointed as CLO. The roads construction project entails, among others, the tarring of a 2 km-stretch of road that runs past their extension to Extension 76 along the road to Ga-Matlala. A meeting between community representatives and the Speaker of Polokwane was held last Tuesday, followed by a mass gathering late last Wednesday afternoon for a re-run of the process overseen by officials of Polokwane

Municipality’s Public Participation Unit accompanied by Mojapelo. On Tuesday it was learnt that no CLO had been appointed as yet due to the fact that the first CLO was threatening to take the municipality to court. According to information a meeting between representatives of the municipality and the community to discuss the matter was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. It was evident that the majority of those present was female, a factor ascribed to the men from the area still out working and that many households in the area being headed by women. According to information there was a call for calm prior to the start of the meeting. After the election of the committee members Mojapelo addressed the community saying that the project would proceed in the rightful manner. She called for the CVs and documents for application for the position of CLO to be dropped off at the municipal offices the next morning. South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) Ward Chairperson Botha Mphahlele, who was elected onto the new PSC, said the community had in mind their own preferred candidate as CLO to liaise on their behalf. At the time of going to press Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Malesela Maubane said a meeting between the Speaker and community representatives was ongoing.

The gathering was addressed by, among others, Cosatu President Sdumo Dlamini and National Department of Correctional Services acting Commissioner Zach Modise. Representatives from Popcru’s alliance partners such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), Department of Justice and

Zach Modise, acting Commissioner of the National Department of Correctional Services prior to addressing the Popcru delegates on Monday. Correctional Services and the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison were scheduled to address the committee. Several commissions and plenary sessions were held behind closed doors. On the planned implementation of an agenda which will ensure better working conditions within correctional services, Modise said: “We appreciate and recognise the role of Popcru in supporting the transformation agenda. Much has still to be done but it is important to acknowledge the progress thus far that would not have been possible in the absence of Popcru’s valuable inputs.” He concluded saying that the department would not be able to deliver on its mandate without the positive influence of people of Popcru and that everyone’s efforts are appreciated.

Town pool remains closed OBSERVER despite numerous enquiries WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com

W

hile Polokwane Observer highlighted the fact that the Polokwane swimming pool still remains closed two months into summer the Polokwane Municipality is doing nothing to communicate on the matter despite a provincial swimming gala being scheduled to be held at the pool in two weeks time. It has now also come to the attention of Polokwane Observer that international funding was secured through Swimming South Africa (SSA) for the pool to be heated in order to facilitate the development of swimming in the province. Once the pool heating system has been installed the pool will be suitable for use throughout the year. Municipal swimming pools countrywide are supposed to officially open on 1 September to coincide with the advent of spring and the start of the summer swimming season. During the winter months when the pools are closed general maintenance and repairs if necessary, are then meant to take place. It has been established from sources within the municipality that repairs to the scum channels around

the pool and leaks from the aging expansion joints in both the diving and swimming pools need to be carried out before any of the pools can be filled with water. Despite the bidding process for quotes for the repairs to be done being at an advanced stage, the organisers of the swimming gala with the assistance of Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor in the Polokwane Municipality, Roelof Lourens have been frantically trying to get clarification on when the repairs will be completed. Polokwane Observer also failed to solicit any comment from the municipality, despite numerous phone calls and emails to the municipal communications and marketing department. When Polokwane Observer visited the town pool on Friday both swimming pools were empty, but the grass area around them was cut and municipal workers busy with their daily chores. One of the organisers of the Limpopo Swimming Championships, Ockert Vermeulen has been trying since last week to arrange a meeting with Polokwane Municipality’s Director of Community Development Services, Ndavhe Ramakuela to find out if they can continue hosting the swimming gala as scheduled. Vermeulen said PHOTOS: WARREN BLUNT

The 50 m swimming and diving pools at the municipal pools remain empty more than two month after the facility was meant to reopen for summer.

that despite assurances by Ramakuela that a meeting would be held last Friday, nothing has materialised and further enquiries by SMS to his cell phone and by telephone to his office remain unanswered. Vermeulen continued that SSA has encouraged the Limpopo Swimming Association to fast track swimming development to previously disadvantaged swimmers and the town pool is an important venue for this to take place, but the swimming pool has remained closed since the start of summer. He confirmed that international funding has been acquired for the swimming pool to be heated. Lourens confirmed that international funding for the heating of the swimming pool for the purpose of swimming development was approved at a council meeting in August, and work on the project should already have started. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received from the Polokwane Municipality despite numerous requests both telephonically and by email. So for now the swimmers and residents of the city will remain in the dark as to why the swimming pool remains closed with the school holidays fast approaching.

Juju assault case withdrawn

RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

Global Strake Security has withdrawn the case of assault and pointing of a firearm it opened against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commanderin-Chief Julius Malema and one of his security guards nearly two weeks ago. The two charges as well as a charge of malicious damage to property were laid at the Polokwane Police Station after an alleged confrontation between Malema, one of his body

guards and a security guard in the employ of Global Strake Security at a music festival hosted at Peter Mokaba Stadium. Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto at the time said the alleged argument between the parties began after Malema and his entourage supposedly wanted to leave the stadium through an entrance only gate. “It was alleged that an argument erupted after the guard refused to let them out and asked them to use the exit gate. Malema allegedly

then pushed the guard while one of his body guards pointed a firearm at the security officer,” Otto said. On Tuesday Otto confirmed that the cases had been withdrawn with no reason given. “The complainant decided to withdraw the cases after which the Police sent the docket to the senior prosecutor who decided to dismiss all charges,” Otto said. Global Strake Security Media Relations Officer Phoda Mapeka was not available to provide reasons for the decision to withdraw the case.

Boshielo and two others in court February 2015 RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Former Education Department Head Benny Boshielo, Anna-Marié Gordan, a senior administration officer at the Department of Education and the former departmental Bid Adjudicating Committee (BAC) Chairperson, Marinda Malele will appear in court again on 5 February next year facing fraud charges allegedly involving close to R70 million. Malele was only arrested days after Boshielo and Gordan made their first appearance in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in September. Boshielo was then granted R5 000 bail and Gordan R1 000. Hawks Spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said Malele appeared in court on 10 October on the same

fraud charges and was granted bail of R10 000. “The trio appeared again on Tuesday and the case was remanded to next year when a trial date will be determined. It is likely that the case will be transferred to the Seshego Magistrate’s Court,” Ramaloko said. The charges relate to a mobile classroom project dating back to February and March 2010. Ramaloko previously said the Department of Education issued a three-month tender for the construction of mobile classrooms at different schools across the province but once the period had lapsed Gordan allegedly changed the minutes of the bid committee meeting to turn it into a six-month contract. Boshielo allegedly approved the funds for the extended period.

Hy bly in aanhouding.

Alleged ritual killer on trial next year

Ernest Malatji who is accused of allegedly murdering Kgomotso Ragolane in January appeared in the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court last Thursday where the case was postponed to 20 April 2015 when he will stand a four day trial in the Sekgosese High Court. Malatji faces charges of kidnapping, rape, murder and mutilation of the 19 year-old Ragolane’s body at Rhelela Village just outside Tzaneen. Her mutilated body was found by a passerby. Reportedly one of her arms had been cut off and her abdomen cut open. Malatji’s court appearance April was marked by several days of violent community protest which ended when Police allegedly shot and killed three residents. It is reported protesters set alight three houses and destroyed a sat-

ellite Police station while 15 Police officers were injured.

Twee weer in hof oor moord

Mayor embarks on service delivery mission BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com

P

olokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng, in line with the good governance and community participation vision of the municipality embarked on a three pronged mission in the Seshego cluster last Thursday. Tidimalo Chuene, Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality said a delegation led by Nkadimeng first visited the Seshego Sewerage Plant and road projects to monitor progress by contractors. At the sewerage plant Nkadimeng indicated that a contractor is currently on site to upgrade the sewerage plant as it is now under capacity pressure resulting in overflow. This project is expected to be completed by March 2015 whereafter the plant is expected to be operating optimally. The delegation then visited the Ditlou Street Road Project, which was constructed during March to September 2014 as part of the infrastructure development for the Integrated Rapid Public Transport System (IRPTS). A stop was also made at Luthuli Park where upgrading of 1,3 km of gravel streets to tar surface is currently underway. The works have been divided in three streets which also include

Former finance chief now in dock with MEC RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Former Chief Financial Officer of the Department of Health and Social Development, Friday Mushwana and three alleged accomplices were arrested last Wednesday and will together with former MEC Miriam Segabutla face charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering worth R16 million. The arrested persons included Segabutla’s lawyer Gert van der Merwe, Mushwana and directors of Impact Plus, Calvin Masehela and his wife, Meriam Masehela who appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court for their alleged involvement in a tender fraud incident during Segabutla’s time in office in 2010. Segabutla, Jacob Lucas from Tshepo Technology Consulting and Peter Erasmus from Trispen Solutions were arrested last year for their suspected involvement in the case. According to Hawks Spokesperson Paul Ramaloko, Segabutla allegedly awarded

construction of storm water systems. “The Luthuli Park road project started on 07 August and is earmarked for completion on 4 March 2015 at a cost of R9.8 million from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) budget. A lot of rocks which were found on this road have been one of the contributing factors to the slow progress on the project. Rock blasting was impossible due to the proximity of houses and special techniques had to be employed to deal with this obstacle,” Chuene reported. A total of 14 temporary jobs for locals are already created whilst by completion date the project would have created 60 jobs for locals. The road will also be Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System ready. Various stakeholders were further engaged at an outreach programme which started at 10:00 at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex. Stakeholder groups such as youth, women, disabled, taxi associations, community based organisations, non-governmental organisations and the farming community were represented and had a voice. Mahlatse Tjale, who represented the youth, is quoted to have said that youth unemployment is a very thorny issue for them. He asked the municipality to waive payment of fees for usage of sporting facilities. “The Executive Mayor, in her response to the stakeholder questions and inputs said that the municipality has set aside a budget of R5,7 million for sport and recreation in the Seshego Cluster,” Chuene stated. “We are a municipality that listens to all stakeholders and this is one of the platforms for doing so. As government we work on an integrated approach, therefore we will continue to engage the departments of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs on housing issues, Health on clinics, Agriculture and Rural Development on farmers’ issues,” Nkadimeng is quoted to have said. The day was wrapped up with a council meeting at the Ngoako Ramatlodi Sports Complex.

Van der Merwe was granted bail of R25 000 while Mushwana and both Masehelas were released on R10 000 bail each and will appear again next week together with Sekgabutla, Lucas and Erasmus.

Treasures Divine for things creative

Treasures Divine owner Nickey Felix (centre) surrounded by friends and family at Saturday’s opening of her new venture. Far left is Maureen Elliott, who is the shop manager, with Ursula Naudé, Lesley Raw and Ashleigh Raw.

A burning passion for things creative has found expression in a small space that just opened in the heart of Polokwane. Treasures Divine is a shrine dedicated to the ingenuity of owner Nickey Felix, who has found an outlet for accessories like jewellery, scarves, shoes and handbags she has always been making. Throughout the clothing and gift shop her influence is noticeable, with ensembles put together to catch the eye. Find handmade strappy sandals with a sexy twist and a range of handbags in wardrobes hung with layered outfits and strings of statement-making beads. Items of jewellery vary between bespoke pieces from Italy and Austria to her own costume pieces. While the clothing lines originate from across the country and abroad, she intends stocking exclusive ranges not to be repeated and not at all anything run-of-the-mill. “Treasures must always remain treasures,” she remarks.

Adding to the charm are gifts that would appeal to varying tastes. Sure to establish itself as a firm favourite are the coconut ice and fudge in delectable flavours varying from pecan nut to Amarula infusions which Felix produces. The venue is located on the premises of a restored house situated at 80 Compensatie Street that doubles as a small retail hub, which too is in line with a specific bohemian feel she perceived, Felix explains. On Saturday invited guests gathered for the opening of the venue, which saw an allfemale party indulging in offers on display and savouring treats made especially for the occasion by Martin-Shawn van Huyssteen and Jean-Louis Nienaber of on-site trendsetting Velvet Apple Café. Her shop is the realisation of a lifelong dream, Felix mentions. The name for the new venture just rang true to what she wanted to do, she concludes. Find Treasures Divine tucked away at the back of the garden where an array of tongue-in-cheek artistic influences befit a new home-grown arrival.

Guests Mari Romijn and Inge Britz find treasures among the things on display. They reckoned the shop offered artistic, fresh ideas and something different to the usual on offer in Polokwane.

yriads of shoppers flocked to Mall of the North on Saturday to share in the opening of designer children’s clothing retailer, Keedo Kids. On the day the store showcased its refreshed brand identity that was launched with the opening of the Clearwater Mall store earlier this year. The stunning summer styles which are designed and manufactured in Cape Town had kids and their parents really excited. Area Manager, Lerato Mafodi said they were happy with the turnout on their first day of business in the mall. “There was better response from the public than we expected. That on its own showed us there is a serious need for our goods and products,” Mafodi said. Thabang Maruma from Seshego wanted to see for himself what it was all about and remarked that he was pleased with the quality and variety on offer. “We hardly find shops like this in Polokwane, they are normally found outside the province. We will have lots of options while we do shopping now,” he said. The opening of the first ever Keedo Kids store in Limpopo coincided with the brand’s 21st birthday celebrations in October. Keedo Kids founder, Nelia Annandale Schutte, in celebration of this milestone partnered with media personality Jo-Ann Strauss to launch the

A lot of extras are added when you buy an Isuzu KB250D Fleetside from Westvaal Polokwane G2.

KB250D Fleetside is on offer now. Westvaal G2 stocks a limited number of KB250D bakkies at affordable prices and to make the purchase even more worth it, the dealership guarantees a bakkie with less than 10 000 km, while they will add a canopy, tow

bar, rubberising and radio, from as little as R239 900. The KB250D single cab is a true workhorse and up for any job 24 hours of the day. It’s the leader in its class when it comes to reliability and toughness. The bakkie is a match for any load, road or challenge, maintaining a fine balance between carrying capacity and comfortable handling. It looks good, is incredibly capable off-road and fulfils the role of utilitarian workhorse with confidence. The load bed is 35 mm longer at 2 305 mm and wider at 1 570 mm. The bakkie even looks much bigger than its predecessors with a bulkier and bold appearance. The single cab also offers more space inside the cabin. It offers enhanced features for your convenience inside the twin-cockpit concept interior, such as multiple internal storage areas, a larger load box and reduced noise levels inside the cab. You get the sense that Isuzu wants to tap into the lifestyle market with its upgraded trim, dials and centre console. All dials are within easy reach of the driver and the seats are comfortable, eliminating sore backs after long hours of work behind

The Isuzu is spa cious and quite luxu rious for a work horse. the wheel. It is after all a bakkie with the main purpose of delivering only the best service so there aren’t any fancy frills to the cockpit yet it remains quite luxurious for a bakkie capable of working non-stop. An air-conditioner will make those long trips a breeze even on the province’s hottest day. Under the hood lurks a diesel engine supported by a five speed manual gearbox. The engine delivers 58 kW at 3 800 rpm of power and 170 Nm of torque at 1 800 rpm. The KB250D will get you further for less. With its low fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs it is the lowest costs per kilometre in this segment. Not only does the KB250D work hard it also saves you money on the go. When safety is concerned most KB models come standard with multiple brake-support features such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist System (BAS) as well as side impact protection bars. Westvaal G2 guarantees a 114-point check on the KB250D, a full service history and various finance options are available to become an owner of an Isuzu. For more information on the great deals on the KB250D Fleetside visit Westvaal Polokwane G2 at 86 Schoeman Street or contact them on 015 297 2377.

Emotional intelligence has become an important factor in giving a child the edge in a fastmoving modern day society, characterised by new technology, a highly competitive education environment and many other challenges. Mitchell House held an Emotional Intelligence Workshop on Saturday presented by Hennie Vorster, the founder and CEO of H2 Business Consulting and a motivational speaker, business and life coach, and qualified psychologist. The aim of the workshop was for parents and teachers to learn how to know and manage their emotions, and that of their children. During the workshop Vorster covered topics such as the ability to identify, use, understand and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. Emotional intelligence impacts on many different aspects of a person’s daily life, such as the way you behave and interact with other people and everybody who attended learnt more on how emotions rule our daily lives.

Busy time for Polokwane ultra-distance runner WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com Polokwane Athletic Club (PAC) ultra-distance runner Pieter Pretorius has been very busy lately preparing for the Johannesburg Festival of Running 48-hour race at the end of the year where he will try and set a new South African record. Pretorius participated in the Nite 2 Lite race in Vanderbijlpark at the beginning of October that started at 20:00 and ended at 08:00 the following morning. The race was held for the fifth time and for the first time at night at the Kollege Park Primary School around a one kilometre track at the school grounds. A number of top Comrades runners also participated and Pretorius improved the existing record from 100 km to 109 km. After a short break of only three weeks, Pretorius participated in the Coaldust Reach for a Dream 12-Hour Night Race in Witbank to finish first and set the record at 96 km. He was accompanied by Pietersburg Road Runners

ultra-athlete, Johan van der Merwe, who set a new record in the LoobiT 100 mile race at the same event. On Saturday, Pretorius took to the long road again at Rydamans Kaapsehoop 3-in-1 Marathon in Mpumalanga where he qualified for the 2015 Comrades Marathon in 02:56 to be seeded among the Acategory athletes for next year’s race.

Mothiba wins Best Researcher Award Dedicates award to parents who always encouraged her >> ‘Tasked to come up with evidence based solutions to health problems’ >> ‘My parents always encouraged me to study’ Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za

W

hen Maria Mothiba was named Best Overall Researcher at the University of Limpopo her first reaction was to dedicate the award to her parents who always encouraged her to study and work hard. Mothiba was bestowed the honour during the University of Limpopo’s (UL) Vice Chancellor ‘s Research, Teaching and Learning Awards on Friday evening in Polokwane Mothiba, a professor in Health Service Management at the UL, undertook the majority of her research work in the Capricorn district where she focussed on healthcare management; HIV/Aids; sexual and reproductive health; indigenous knowledge systems in health care; lifestyle diseases; mental health as well as teaching and learning. She endeavoured to come up up with evidence-based solutions to health problems which are contextspecific for Limpopo with its unique challenges.

Asked for her response Mothiba said the award symbolises the beginning of hard work. “Hard work is the basis for everything worthwhile one will achieve in life. This award means to me that I have to start working very hard. It means that I have to prove that I was worth the award. This kind of pressure is not new to me. It started in August when I was promoted to the rank of professor. I asked myself one question and that was what I think I need to do differently from what I was doing and that question led me to this award,” Mothiba said. “I dedicate this award to my family, parents who always encouraged me to study hard and my husband who created a conducive home environment which allows me to do my work,” Mothiba said. Her research career commenced in July 2006 upon joining the University of Limpopo after previously being employed in the Healthcare Services sector as nurse at various levels. She holds a master’s degree in Health Sciences from the UL and a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Johannesburg. Mothiba believes with her thorough experience and knowledge in Health Service Management as well as research she can impart maximum impact on promoting the health of the people in the province through the implementation of a number of strategies, including teaching and community engagement.
