WOW…. Issue 04 already!
For those of you who subscribed from day one, thank you sooo much for your support.
The feedback we are having is truly awesome and fully appreciated!
From a simple yarn over a cold beer to actually have this up and running where you can actually watch videos, check out a heap of photos and link straight through to providers to research or buy bits for your own creation is pretty cool if I may say so myself.
There has certainly been some learning for me to get my head around everything that is involved that’s for sure!
I fully get that this is something totally new and unique to the car scene, so the awesome feedback so far is fantastic to say the least.
So what a crazy yet amazing month it has been since issue 03.
Mangakino Hop went off fantastically with
an amazing sunny day right from sunrise!
This honestly would be the best oneday event that I have been to. The entertainment on and off the lake was awesome. The fields were absolutely full of very cool cars on show and the day just went without a hitch right to the end before the clouds rolled in.
So lookout in a future issue for all the photos and videos to come out from that event.
Winter certainly hit us after that but hopefully all that weather is now done and dusted as there is a lot coming up from now on!
There are some very cool track events coming up too! Autofest will be held at Manfield this year and this is definitely worth getting along to. From show n shines to track cruising and burnouts, this event is going to ROCK!
It is a two-day weekend event this time, so make sure you check it out.
Apart from that, there is a heap of day shows coming up as well, so get the polishing rags out and get amongst it!
In this issue we feature Henry’s Hot Rod shop opening day which was straight after the doors opened from our Covid lock down. Everyone was obviously hanging to get out with cars arriving from all directions.
We’ve also got Part 1 of our Muscle Car Madness coverage. This is such a huge event and I love it!
We have to cover this week over two issues as its huge! So look for the video icons and make sure you catch it all.
As for our feature cars this month, we have Turtles awesome Willys coupe and Richard and Jacqui Thomson’s classy Chevy Bel Air. Both these awesome builds could look quite comfy in my shed I reckon!
So jump in, make sure you check it all out, grab the video links and kick back and soak up the scene.
Cheers all, and thanks soo much again. Giggles (aka Bogan)
RICHARD AND JACQUI THOMSON’S
Classy boosted
CHEVY BEL AIR
Some of you might think I’m coming out of the closet talking about this Chevy here, being a socalled Ford man and all, but I’m thinking this would look pretty damn cool parked in my shed.
Richard and Jacqui’s Bel Air grabbed my attention as soon I spotted it parked in a field full of cool rods, but when I actually got over to check it out, that’s when I knew it had me for sure!
There isn’t anything on this automobile that hasn’t been dressed up, modified or had some sort of custom trickery done to it to make it classy yet not over the top and in your face.
The interior exudes luxury like a top of the line sports car, but looks as if it came from the era with the chrome handle window winders and door handles still protruding from the tan leather door trims. It honestly looks straight out of its packaging from 1957!
The upholstery is leather throughout and looks completely at home in the Bel Air.
The seats are comparable to a modernday leather lounge suite to give you comfort and style when cruising the highways.
Bel Airs are already elegant, with extra chrome and stainless steel trims dressing them up from your average every day Chevy, they are a high class looking automobile for sure.
The paintwork on this build certainly takes on the sophistication of the styling with the two-tone colouring. The
champagne coloured roof flows down the sides to the stainless window surround and somehow lifts the car from being a hot rod to a luxury car.
When I mentioned the custom trickery before, this is when the “oh WOW” kicked in.
Tucked away under the bonnet so no one knows is a tricky little Weiand 144 Supercharger feeding air into a stroker 383 small block Chevy. This little honey feeds air at 7.3psi into that small block, so you know when that gas peddal gets pushed down, this thing is going to jump like no standard 1957 Bel Air ever did.
If you’ve seen my build, you will know I love these under bonnet blowers. The everyday practicality of having it tucked away yet there to keep the torque on tap whenever you want it makes for a cool build, and yes this thing does push you
back into the seat when a smile is required!
This all drops back to a TH400
trans to keep it a cruiser but tricked a tad with a 2500rpm stall converter for when you want a play.
This automobile plays with my mind it does!
It is built like a hot rod with the get up and go, wide sticky tyres to keep it on the road, disc brakes all around to pull up that blown stroker, yet sits so classily as if saying “what –I’m innocent”.
It really is a beautiful automobile to ride in. The style, comfiness and beautiful V8 rumble takes you right back in time to when these works of art were built to reflect the space race.
The Fifties were truly an awesome era for auto designers to show their stuff and this is a perfect example even with its modifications.

Henry’s ROD SHOP OPENING
DAY 2020
as you arrive that this is a Hot Rod shop!
After everyone being caged up for so long and not out cruising, it was certainly obvious that people couldn’t wait to get out and get behind the wheel of their toys again!
Owners Ray and Mark Thompson have been around hot rods for way too many years to mention.
The new premises in Marshall Road, Katikati is an awesome set up from mechanical to panel beating, then onto the finished painted product for anyone wanting a build done to any stage.
The front of the building has more than full sized murals of their own builds, including a 36 Ford Tudor and a couple of Coupes, just to let you know as soon
There is not just hot rod builds either, tucked amongst the builds were several muscle cars from both America and Australia. You don’t see that very often!
With such a beautiful sunny day in the BOP, cars and people were arriving bright and early to get amongst it.
The rear car park was full in no time with clubs arriving in mass making for a very cool display!
The front car park area filled up not long after with more clubs that had turned it into a full-on cruise day, doing a tiki tour around the countryside before arriving.
Local band “Blaze” were in fine form entertaining the crowd banging out some cool ole rock n roll tracks from years gone by, along with the local Fire
Brigade cooking up sausages to feed the masses.
The celebrations were in hand with a custom printed cake for the opening to celebrate the day which was soon cut and handed about after a quick prize giving to cars chosen by Ray and Mark as worthy.
It certainly was an awesome day out that quickly turned from an opening into a full-on car show.
It was fantastic to see a heap of cool cars out cruising again and the buzz amongst the crowd reviving the faith that the car scene could never be held back for long!
There is certainly a lot of knowledge and experience tucked away in these cool sheds with another shed currently being built to house more projects for finishing!
WOW, what a turn out for an open day this was!

AWESOME WILLYTurtle’s
Like a dream hot rod straight out of American Graffiti, this awesome build screams the early era of home built drag cars cruising the streets and looking for trouble!
In my opinion, this is such a cool shape and I love it!
You either hate this model or you love it, but it gets in your face with that huge aerodynamic bonnet pointing at you saying “want an automobile race”.
It just can’t help itself but look like a drag car, which is bound to be why a heap of
them ended up on the drag strips back in the day.
With huge tyres jammed in under the extra wide rear guards and a set of skinnies up front, they looked totally at home with that nose in the air and smoke rolling off the tyres.
When Craig first hit me up to photograph his Willy, my first thought was, I better grab the wide lens for this job! (ohhh I know, but he’ll buy me a beer for that!)
I’ve always fancied one of these Willy’s, and like Craig we probably got bitten by the bug as kids watching old hot rod movies.
Craig’s search to find one of these rear bodies was getting pretty hard so the decision was made to build his own and what an awesome call that was.
After finding a body in Palmy, the mission
began building everything into and around it.
A roll cage was snuck into the interior along with a heap of custom fabrication to build the massive stereo in behind the seats and roll the centre console up to the dash to install the necessary switch gear and stereo head unit!
Being a full build like this, the bonus is, you can do pretty much what ever you like as far as custom bits go.
If you get the chance to check out underneath this thing, you’ll see it’s pretty staunch with all the stability and strength that’s been built into hanging onto that 9” diff!
It’s bound to need it too, as up front the tricked up Big Block 454 Chevy is bound to shove some twisting down the line!
Give me the dirt…

Shifting the gears and moving that power through is via a TH400 automatic, shift kitted and kicked in with a 2500rpm stall converter, so she’s actually a pretty cruisy rod to drive until you want it to shove you back in the seat.
The paint work on this is what it’s all about with Willys. Custom flames flowing over the front guards and down that huge bonnet to the bug catcher poking out definitely takes you back to them old hot rod movies we all love.
These are such an iconic automobile, they were not officially designed as a drag car of the day, more for the gentleman with a hat he could still wear while driving his car, but it only takes one hoodlum to start the ball rolling I guess.
Turns out Craigs fits into that realm quite well, as along with this parked in the shed is his pretty cool looking T bucket he’s had for around twenty years. Not to mention a series of other coupes he’s owned until finally cranking into his dream build here.
It’s definitely one to check out if you get the chance.

31 YEARS OF MADNESS!
MUSCLE CAR MADNESS 2021
The Build Up...
ALRIGHTY - Take a few thousand people, around a thousand cool old school cars and hot rods, live bands, retro pageants plus a burnout pad and you have one full-on amazing action packed four-day event you will just love!
So this is it “Muscle Car Madness 2021”. Sit back for some old school fun and laughter like the old days right here! This is truly how life used to be before political correctness got involved and I love it!
This is my third venture down south to this awesome event and I’m certainly going back again.
This isn’t for the faint hearted and definitely not for the tree huggers, this is way too much fun for that! But don’t think it’s just rough as guts tho, the rule here is “don’t be dick - and you’ll be all good!” and that’s how the whole event rolls. In my opinion, this is what makes it such a cool event.
The Rangiora Domain gets packed full of cool, like-minded people, simply there to catch up with mates, make new mates and have a good time and it rocks!
The event officially starts on the Thursday but the gates open late Wednesday for setting up with campers being able to slip in and set up as well. This is always me, in on the Wednesday to get amongst it and capture it all as it happens.
Awesome luck for me really, as I get to camp up with the famous Garage Crew and enjoy the southern hospitality and atmosphere right from the word go!
It’s so relaxed and chilled that without even realising you have kicked off your shoes and you’re wondering around chatting to everyone as if you’ve been mates for years!
Thursday is fully all-go in the domain. Food trucks, trade stalls, kids rides and the endless stream of campers rolling in to set up keeps the place pretty busy.
The perimeter road-way slowly turns into the cruising strip as everyone settles in, makes themselves at home and now the weekend really cranks in.
It always cracks me up to see what creations people have built to drag into the grounds and cruise with!
From twin V8 powered tractors, fourwheel boats to anything resembling a creation form the Mad Max movie set, it all seems to end up cruising the strip with a heap of people hanging off having a laugh.
Friday is a cruise day for those who have already settled in. It’s a chance to jump in for a convoy out to a beautiful river reserve in the Ashley gorge, park up for lunch and enjoy chilling out amongst some cool rides, meet more cool people and just get amongst the vibe really.
Upon arriving back at the Rangiora Domain Friday afternoon, you instantly know the party has already started.
Friday night and the hall starts up after dinner, live bands kick off to entertain and the cruising strip is bumper to bumper with hot rods, classic muscle cars, rat rods and whatever creation can be driven around really.
Camp sites turn into party zones with everyone catching up and the atmosphere of being at Muscle Car Madness is now in full swing, and it’s awesome!
This truly is a one-of-a-kind event catering for rev heads who love the scene. The two days to chill out or build up to the actual weekend events is super cool because come Saturday, it’s ALL GO!
Definitely catch us in part 2 of our coverage here. Saturday is show day for the cars, the retro pageants and the burnout pad gets opened up for some awesome skid sessions!
