I’ve been pretty lucky to get around some
grabbing photos and video to bring to you too. It really is awesome to see what some people have tucked away in their sheds. This month we have an awesome 56 Chevy Bel Air dropped to the deck but looking classy-as. Then we are into a staunch Big Block Impala Super Sport. I soooo love the shape of these Impala’s. Long and sleek like a mix between a muscle car and a cruiser with their roof lines.
It really has been fun getting around capturing all this good stuff to bring to you for sure!
So GET AMONGST! Check out our Youtube channel with videos of feature cars, burnouts, drag racing and pretty much anything related to the scene along with our back issues of the mag.
There’s something for everyone in there for sure.
Cheers all. Thanks so much for the support with this and if I don’t catch you at a run somewhere, have an awesome month!

JESS & HAYDEN KIRKWOOD’S 56 CHEVY I ts t he cats whiskers
How’s this for a stunning piece of auto art from the 50’s. This really is the ‘cat’s whiskers’ this Chevy.
When I first spotted Jess, Hayden and the family cruising up the road in their 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air, it instantly grabbed my attention. The glow from the chrome detailing and shine off that stunning colour reflecting different light and shadows fully made it stand out from the crowd.
The stance with the Air Ride suspension sitting the body just off the tarmac, accentuating the long curved lines to have it looking like a sneaky little sleeper looking for mischief on the L.A. streets.
This stunning build sits in a class of its own with its character. With its low rider stance and attention to detailing with its finish, it could easily be called a low rider, but at the same time with its awesome attention to keeping it in original factory finish, it could easily be thought of as a classic or even vintage with its age and originality.
The interior finish is pretty much straight out of the factory with a few minor mod cons added for todays cruising luxuries. The thumpy stereo unit and surround sound for example still keeps to within the originality of the interior.
The power plant up front has been replaced with a shiny crate 350 Chevy back through to the 200r automatic trans to have her purring along just nicely. The brakes however did get a makeover with a booster conversion and
disk brakes up front to pull the ole girl up. The suspension has been swapped out for an Air Ride set up making it an awesome cruiser.
The finish with the paint work is simply perfect with the keeping of the Bel Air. The two-tone colouring framed with the stainless trim along the spates over the rear wheels takes it right back to the era. The only difference is this finish is incredibly deep and glossy. The deep gold paint catches the light incredibly and glistens back at you.
The Felix cat on the nostalgic number plate surround is a tribute to the Felix Chevrolet Store in L.A.
The store owners named the sales yard after their cat and the name has stuck since 1921 providing car parts and Chevrolets to public still today.
So this Chevrolet is definitely the ‘cat’s whiskers!’
The car itself was shipped over from Australia by Hayden after convincing a friend of his to part with it.
Hayden, being an importer for Air Ride suspension with his business Jokers Wild Customs, the Bel Air being dropped is a perfect example of what he can sort out for anyone.
It sits perfectly with his other rides making for a pretty cool and impressive collection to check out. Hayden’s definitely the man to ask if you’re thinking about heading down the road of custom work. He’s not just a tinkering with these builds either. Sitting in the shed is a crazy insane worked Mazda RX7 also from America. This one punches out more horsepower than most wicked V8 builds and pretty much just does skids now. Hayden competes in various burnout comps including the Four and Rotary Nationals so he’s not happy to just drive a cruiser that’s for sure!
This cruiser is not about to be beaten on the burnout pad tho, the family’s quite happy to be rolling on the streets just as it is.

AUSSIE STYLE AUSSIE ASSAULT 2021 Shredding it
We’re full noise back into it again with Choice Promotions at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupo.
For a fun day out at a race track, this is such an EPIC event!
I so love this event. It’s true bogan style fun! From cruising with your mates to burnouts on the pad, all in the name of good fun!
This is my third time rocking over to this event. Even if the weather looks like it’s not going to play ball, it’s still worth getting amongst it!
If you know me with my Coupe, you know I love the Aussie muscle cars. Commonly known as the ‘Big Three’ with Ford, Holden and Chrysler there to battle out
the brands so to say.
Choice Promotions put on a massive day here. The program for the day, once you have been through scrutineering and driver / passenger briefing, is to just get out and have fun.
The track is opened up for fun cruising with your mates before the screaming V8 and six action starts on the burnout pad, along with standing drags down the back straight of the track.
Unfortunately this time out, the weather didn’t want to play ball and went against the forecast of finer weather, so the drags had to be called off at the last minute due to the slippery conditions.
The word “slippery” was a slight understatement there for a while as the clouds fully opened up drowning that part of the program.
The bonus of this situation was more
track time available for cruising anyway, or just roaming through the sheds catching up with mates and checking out the cars if they weren’t out there doing it.
The Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park is a great place for these events. The pit area with the big garages and sheltered areas means you can get away from the elements when need be and still be amongst it.
The burnout pad still got a beating but unfortunately the extra slippery concrete made things a bit too hectic for the big blown and methanol cars to get out there and scream it out. But there was still an awesome amount of action going on with some awesome burnouts still happening. The range of cars at this event is awesome. From old school Aussie muscle cars through to the late model modern muscle, it’s all there. Blowers and turbos mixing it up on the track which a is a cool
way to find out just what your build has got.
The grip session on the track with less cars had to be called off this time due to the weather, but this is always a great chance to really test things out.
While the burnout pad was getting a beating, the track also gets opened up for drifting with a quick display from the pro’s before it’s “give-it-a-crack time”, if you felt the need for a bit of sideways action.
In true Choice Promotions style, the day is fully organised to cater for the crowds. Food and coffee vendors along with merchandise stands kept everyone going and warm enough to put up with the weather so the entertainment just kept cranking through.
It’s awesome to see us bogan Aussie owners are a committed bunch. The crowd actually grew throughout the day despite the weather and the track action just kept on going no matter what!
Prize giving towards the end of the day drew everyone back in and the huge rack of trophies and give-aways was handed out to the deserved.
This is such an awesome, relaxed, yet full-on event. The whole day has something going on to make you smile or grin sillily because you know you want to! They only word I had to describe this event was “EPIC”, because it just is!

F laming Hot SUPER SPORT
If you ever wondered if you could make a tuff big block muscle car look incredibly classy and still have flames to satisfy that hot rod desire deep inside, then take a good long look at this stunning piece of sixties auto art!
Isn’t this 66 Impala Super Sport just gorgeous!
The first time I set my eyes on this, my first thought was “damn, that’s cool”. But it wasn’t until I actually got up close to have a good look at it that I realised just HOW cool of an automobile it actually is!
I’ve always liked the Super Sport Impala’s. The sleek lines with the hard top sloping down to the boot, the huge bonnet and almost as long boot lid giving the appeal of an arrow with its long sleek lines.
It kind of sits between a muscle car with the hardtop and a cool cruiser with the long lines, so as a Street Machine, it’s a pretty awesome build!
The Impala’s are tricked up nicely on
the interior as well. The chrome trims on the dash and centre console along with the extra detailing on the seats and door cards just step them up a notch or three from your everyday sixties ride.
It was such a popular vehicle that the actual shape didn’t change much over the years from 1965 through to 1970. The easily spottable differences being the tail lights changing from round to square and then recessed in the bumper were pretty much the way to tell them apart.
I’ve always been a fan of the white interior, although too scared to actually own one.
The classiness of the white and how it shows off the extra detailing certainly is appealing with how it highlights the design.
Of-course when you’re a bit of a revhead, it’s hard to leave one of these alone with its classiness and style. They almost beg to be played with anyway. The stock engine here soon got replaced with a Big Block 454 Chevy stroked to 502ci, just to make sure it kept up with its hot rod styling of the ghost flames along the bottom of the doors.
All this grunt gets passed back to the rear wheels via a shift kitted turbo 400 to a trusty ole 9” diff. The rims and wide
DENISE CHAPMAN’S
tyres giving a throw-back to the hardtop muscle car era of the time to fully take on the sports appearance.
The whole package here fits together stunningly well combining its show car appearance with muscle and cruisability all in one.
Denise first spotted this at the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival but it didn’t grab her straight away. Then again at Beach Hop 2020 it presented itself and after grabbing a couple of mates to go check it out, the deal was done and Denise had herself an awesome Street Machine.

WELCOME TO THE PARTY... Beach Hop 2021
How’s this for the coolest twenty first party!
Yep, twenty-one years this awesome event has been going now and it has grown from a little Rock n’ Roll weekend to almost a weeks worth of awesome car shows, live bands, Rock ‘n Roll and dancing!
Noddy Watts is the man behind the scenes here along with a team of awesome volunteers putting this massive event together.
The logistics of running this is way more than a few pages long now with all the cruising to different towns, closing streets, organising bands and entertainment and generally just keeping things running on the fly with whatever the weather throws at them.
Saturday is the BIG day here. This is the full-on ‘Show Day’ with shows spread out all around town. Ranging from pre 49 Hot Rods, Classics, Retro Caravans to Ultimate Pass Entries on show in the main street of Whangamata.
The day kicks off with entrants parading through town to their separate show
area’s and believe me, with well over a thousand cars cruising down the main street it’s a pretty spectacular sight to behold.
The streets surrounding the entire area are full with people getting amongst the day with an estimated forty thousand people visiting Whangamata to be part of this awesome day out!
The actually parade takes a good couple of hours to roll through town. Live bands are playing in the background and the party atmosphere is fully alive and kicking now!
It’s so awesome to see the retro era getting amongst the cars with people dressing up to capture the Rock n’ Roll atmosphere.
Once the parade has rolled through town, it’s all go then! With the show areas spread out, the crowd soon disperses in every direction to go check out the different displays.
The main street is full noise with hot rods, muscle cars, custom bikes, live bands and nostalgia dragster start-ups to blow any cobwebs out of the ears.
The retro caravan area soon becomes a hive of activity as people roll through
after the Pre 49 show and get amongst the era with more live bands.
The big action is down at Williamson Park where the stage is alive with bands, retro fashion contests, talent quests and of course the famous Beach Hop give-away which anyone can enter to win either a car, caravan or even a brand new Harley Davidson motorbike. So new it hadn’t even been started yet!
Ford being a major sponsor of the event have a huge stand with the latest and greatest Mustangs available to check out and even win.
Food vendors and a massive amount of traders are on hand for everyone to wander through and grab some cool goodies for the cave, retro caravan or pageant.
The entire town is full noise with people roaming the streets amongst the action, cool old school rides cruising and the feel of a party fully in the air!
This is certainly New Zealand’s largest event catering for the hot rod, muscle car and retro era along with the Rock n’ Roll scene which is how it all started. So check it out…

As if straight out of the old Hot Rod movies and American Graffiti, the car park at the Whangamata Club turned into a scene from an old American diner on the Saturday with true old school Hot Rods parked up to display for the crowd roaming the streets from show to show.
Everything from tudors, coupes, trucks and roadsters were on display to bring back those nostalgic memories along with showing of the skill and quality of these builds.
Live bands playing good ole Rock n’ Roll music with Rock n’ Roll dancing to get the atmosphere just rocking as well!

Now doesn’t this take you back to your childhood. Wandering New Zealand’s old narrow roads to park up on a beach somewhere. Kids all running around and parents sitting back laughing with a DB, Speights or Lion Red handy!
Well, that might be your first thought when you walk into the retro caravan display but when you get to see just how some of these old caravans have been adapted to modern day, you’ll want to go make some more memories wandering around.
The retro caravan scene has really taken off in the past few years with more and more turning up at Hot Rod shows. The rebuilds becoming more and more extravagant with modern tricks built in to make living away more comfortable and enjoyable.
The character of the old caravans is what grabs you first though. The curves,
chrome and styling that disappeared years ago when modern cars became plastic and boring at the same time.
Remember the old Hot Wheels collections with cool cars towing cool caravans? Well, this is it in the flesh really and isn’t it cool!
The retro designs have certainly turned into an art form here, just as much as building a hot rod is these days.
The custom tricks performed to match the tow vehicles to the vans is awesome to see and enough to make any old kid smile!
The area seemed to be a combined
hot rod, classic car and retro caravan show really.
The number of vans parking up here from the thursday night onwards was awesome. The party atmosphere seemed to be built into the vans as they rolled in!
Friday night was a full-on light-party night in here. With everyone getting amongst to decorate the vans with LED lights, decorations or just whatever old nostalgic goodies to make an awesome display for people to wander around.
From the Tin Man in a field of poppies to Mick Jagger, it was certainly awesome to be amongst these cool old pieces of nostalgia.

car would have been out the roof. So it is awesome to see that they both stuck to the originality of the build with its style and grace being highlighted along the way.
The matching pedal car belonging to the next Wylie generation of car fanatics is Kennedy’s.
This also has taken out a top award at Beach Hop winning the Tot Rod Show back in 2015.
Making Top 5 for the sunday prizegiving session was a no brainer for this ride really. Kym and Todd’s creation here is simply stunning.
The finish and detailing with all the intricate custom and refinishing of the original parts is superbly done!
The white steelie wheels with white wall tyres taking it right back to the American Graffiti days completing the styling of the era and that cruiser look parked outside the American diner or drive-in movie.
With Todd’s background in this exact industry, the ideas rolling around in his head of how to do this amazing looking
So it appears the youngsters have taught the oldies how it’s done in this case.
This ‘Necessary Evil’ isn’t just a show car either. The speedo gets a fair few miles ticked over on the clock with all the cruising around the country to different shows and events. The whole family is keen-as to drive the wheels off it and get amongst.
KYM & TODD WYLIE’S
If you managed to have a good look around this stunningly well executed rebuild here at Beach Hop, you too would have fully thought to yourself “this will be the top car this year!”
The name is quite fitting really. As we all know when we start tinkering with these old cars, some things just need to be done. Either rebuilding or repainting, either way it becomes that ‘Necessary Evil’ that starts the rebuild off and where it goes from there, nobody can determine until it stops.
But when you have cars in your blood, they are just that! In a pretty cool way though!
Full credit to Kym & Todd here, this really is a stunning build and from the first glance for me, it was clear it would be the winner of Beach Hop 21 Top Car.

Q&A:
So how long have you owned the car ?
11.5-ish years. It’s looked like this for 9.5 of those.
Where did you find it, import or around NZ?
It was sitting in Hamilton, had been imported many years beforehand, but the owner had never quite gotten to it, so it was a rolling body with some of the parts there when we got it.
What made you pick this car?
Youthful stupidity?… We kinda wanted a ’59 Cadi, but they are a bit too common, the next shape we looked at was the ‘56’s, then we found out about this one. It was never going to be for sale, but we made it happen… took a while though. All fell into place eventually.
Did you buy the car as is or build it?
Built… always.
If built, how long was the build time?
About a year to get it legally on the road the first time around, then six months working round the clock to change it from patina to perfection. Had to be done quick since one of us got pregnant…
What condition was it in when you got it?
Solid, rust free, but very sun burnt. It was good like that, but NZ is not Arizona, and it was getting worse, so we had to do something, hence it becoming a Necessary Evil… it had to be done. The name stuck.
What would be your favourite car to have?
The next one… watch this space… maybe Beach Hop 2022 if we get it ready in time.
What car would you like to test drive?
Have been lucky enough to drive more than most, so nothing specific.
Any other cool cars in the shed?
A Dodge Seneca wagon that should be getting worked on, a couple of turbo Jappas a couple of Euros, and something for Beach Hop 2022.
What do you love about the car scene the most?
The people you meet along the way. They come from all walks of life, but all have the common love.
What’s on the stereo right now?
Whatever our 9-year old daughter manages to find.
Anyone you would you like to thank for helping with the car?
A huge list, maybe too many to mention here. And that’s ok, but … Resene Automotive and Light Industrial, Advanced Chrome Platers, Sony, Rapid Radio, Boss Panel and Paint, Bodymods, City Trim, C&M Performance, Digital Logistics, NZ Soda Blasting, Terry’s Chassis Shoppe, PG Hydraulics, Custom AutoGlass, Race Brakes, Pitstop Greenlane, Kelford Cams, Stocks, ProCoat, Pixelsauraus, TrimWorx, Spray Factory, Macbilt Engineering, Larry Fallowfield, Jo-Anne de Villiers, Adam Croy, Andrew Town, Brett Delahunty, Bryce Gordon, Gavin Dawson, Harry Dart, Kevin Shaw, Matt Fryer, Ryan Sheldon, Troy Yeoman, Ken McAdam, Scott Draper, Mel Draper, Matt Hutchinson, and everyone else who has helped along the way.
