HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Yep, we are back into a brand new year already! Summer’s here and the shows are on so let’s GET AMONGST!

At a quick look at the calendar for this year, the next couple of months looks to be absolutely flat out with car shows. From burnout competitions, drag racing and show’n shines it looks like most weekends are taken care of.

It certainly has been a crazy time leading up to summer but by the snap shots I’ve seen floating around, there are going to be some cool new rides rolling into these shows going on.

I have to say, the build standard now is extremely up there.

I get the sense the Aussie Summernats influence is creeping in just nicely with a

Custom work and big blowers seem to be on Santa’s list this year and it’s pretty damn cool by my books!

A few of the postponements like Beach Hop to late November will only help a few get finished ready in time so there’s always a silver lining to that stuff.

In the mean time we have been busy-as getting out and about catching a few more ‘feature cars’ to bring to you, plus catching up on the club scene with the odd breakfast gathering.

It’s awesome to see the club scene is good and strong and probably stronger with the club gatherings being the main stay for getting out cruising now.

magazine, drop me a line. I’m always keen to jump in for a cruise and capture a cool ride.

It really does surprise me what is actually tucked away in some sheds. Our two feature cars here are prime examples of that. The Buick we are featuring later in here is probably one of a handful still alive I’d say. Having built only 664 of them way back in 1970 as a luxurious muscle car, you can bet most of these have been raced and trashed by now! So, it’s awesome to be able to bring you an article on it. It’s almost like a history lesson in cool stuff!

So, I’ll be back into it for another month roaring around some shows but in the mean time, check out Aroha Cruise Inn, the full-on Frankton Thunder and our very cool feature rides in here. Catch you out there.

MUSCLE CAR GM’s luxury

When I say this is rare, what I’m saying is that over a four-year production time from 68-72, only 664 of these tough-as muscle cars were actually built.

further battle it out with the Hemi’s, as by now the war had really started with the Stage 1 coming on line.

When you rock up to photo one car and a stunningly well-presented Nova pulls up for a shoot as well. Then the owner says “I’ll go grab my other car” The last thing you would expect to see roll up is an absolutely stunningly well restored immaculate Stage 1 Grand Sport Buick!

This is one of those rarer than rare cars that survived the seventies in one piece, even tho it was designed and built to kick the Hemi’s to touch with a factory tricked-up big block.

This automobile built way back in 1970 then restored in the mid 90’s is as if it rolled straight out of the factory ready to tear up Route 66 without a care in the world.

GM decided they needed to take on the Hemi’s and win, so they took the stock big block 455 that the other Buicks had, threw the heads away to bolted on new pairs with bigger valves, higher compression, specifically tunned 4-barrel quadrajet carb, then slipped in a more aggressive cam shaft to really slam some stunningly high torque to the tarmac and still have good mid-range horsepower.

Like every true Muscle car should, GM slotted a 4-speed gear box in behind and in this case the crunchy Muncie M-22 4-speed box to shift that torque to the positraction axle in the rear.

They called these models the “Stage 1”. GM went on to produce the Stage 2 after, which included factory headers etc to

Buicks have always been a luxury GM. Being just one step down the hierarchy from the cruisy Cadillac with every comfort you could think of, GM wanted to produce a Muscle car that was also comfortable for rocking along the highways. So the Grand Sport know as the GS was born to be just that.

This car is simply stunning with all its comforts and little extra’s added to the interior for driver and passenger satisfaction.

Right down to clips along the hood lining to slip your seat belt into when not in use. Any other coupe or hard-top on the market just left them hanging for the back-seat passengers to hang themselves in when trying to get out of the car.

Here’s another one from the “you just never know” file!
BRENT & ADRIENNE CAMPBELL’S 1970 BUICK - GS STAGE 1 (GRAN SPORT)

The rear armrests for the passengers have the complimentary ashtrays built in and courtesy lights set into the rear pillars. The air conditioning, factory stereo and extra vents up front along with the stylish dash to in-case the recessed bank of gauges just screams muscle but class at the same time.

The upholstery through-out is classy and a step up from the factory muscle cars built at the time, which were normally just built to go and not for show.

The exterior of this car is simply gorgeous. The extra detailing with the stainless trims including the wheel arches and bottom sills with red stripes stepping it up once again from the norm. The vents recessed into the bonnet are actually there for a purpose feeding air into the air-cleaner via sealed ducts so that cold air only would feed the 4-barrel carb to help produce the extra horsepower desired.

The pillarless design with the doors and rear windows is a standout in these coupes. It leaves the lines to flow from front to back when the windows are down and simply accentuates the sleek lines of a muscle car.

The vinyl roof adds the classiness to almost give it a sleeper look.

The recessed tail lights in that huge chrome back bumper forming an aerodynamic styling, almost as if following on from the space race designs of the earlier Buicks.

This stunning example is so original, the originals wheels are even tucked away for safe keeping.

Brent also has the sales sheet from back in day when you could buy all of this spec’d-up automobile for $4489.38 American. It was probably a lot of money back in 1970, but just think about that investment now and what you actually have in a Muscle car!

I can fully see this awesome looking machine tearing up them American state highways with that tricked-up big 455ci engine revving just nicely, ready to be slammed into action with that 4-speed floor shifter in your hand.

HELL YEAH BABY!

Give me the dirt…

Now that’s pretty damn cool!

This is definitely not your ordinary hot rod show. This is like a jam-packed full-on day of entertainment with something for everyone AND their dog!

A few years back while wandering around the Stragglers Car Show, Kat Wakefield hit me up and asked if I would be interested in photographing at a show in Hamilton. So, as you can imagine with me, the answer is pretty much always “HELL YEAH!”

So that was it, I’ve been heading back over the hill to catch this day ever since.

It is such a cool day out. There is so much going on that to actually try and photograph it all is like a running mission around the streets.

The day is open to so many groups to come along and get amongst it that the name Frankton Thunder really only covers one part of the day.

For those who want to start the day with a cruise on either a bike or in a car can meet in Cambridge to form the Thunder Cruise and convoy into Frankton from there.

There’s a fair crowd of bikes that get amongst this. Most of which are decorated with stuffed fluffy toys for the charity collection run by St Vincent De Paul for local families when they thunder into the Frankton streets.

Hot rods, muscle cars and classics have already started parking up along the side streets when this parade rolls in so it’s all go from here.

Live bands set up on truck decks jam out cool old sounds as the crowd starts to grow to check out the action.

Every now and then a Nitro drag car would smash the sound of the crowd

with a few good revs to attract even more of a crowd into the street.

You certainly can’t beat the sound of a Nitro car having a scream. It’s intense to say the least!

Amongst this area is the Thunder PhotoRama going on as well.

This is a cool event to be part of and is how I actually got involved with the event to start with.

With the Retro Pageant contestants of the day, here is their chance to have a full-on photo-shoot with various photographers. The deal is ten photographers with their names in a hat, contestants each with their names in a hat and it’s a lucky dip. Each photographer gets ten minutes to photograph a contestant in a fenced off carpark full with ten cool old school cars and even an army jeep complete with soldiers!

As you can imagine this is a pretty cool chance to get creative and shoot pretty much whatever you like to capture the

Hot Rods, Fashion, Tattoo’s and BIG GUNS! This sets the bar on how to jam pack a day out!

look you want. It’s honestly really cool to be part of.

For the contestants, this is just the beginning of their busy day.

In the centre of the Main Street is the stage for the retro pageant competition. When the bands finish entertaining the crowd, it’s all go on stage with the pageant including retro swimwear through to a fashion parade. While the pageant judging is going on, burlesque dancers take to the stage to entertain along with all sorts of talent acts to wow the crowd and generally not try at home!

All along the main street and side streets are muscle cars and hot rods on display until you get to the tattoo competition.

This drew a good crowd of people to come and check out the art and get amongst with their own pieces to show off.

With a pretty famous judging panel on hand to pick the favourites and present the awesome pieces of art as prizes for the judge’s choice. This was awesome entertainment for the crowds roaming the streets.

The tattoo art being displayed was truly impressive to say the least, so it would have been a hard choice for the judges without the crowd participation judging with their applause.

The local steampunk society got fully into the swing of the day as well. There was a great crowd of members dressed in all sort of fantastic outfits with some awesome looking creations complimenting their fashion designs.

As if all this wasn’t enough to keep you busy looking around and not knowing which way you wanted to go. After the jet helicopter engine powered motorbiked cruised through and the retro pageant was over, a full-on mock battle from the army days was in action on the

side street. Complete with real blank bullets firing to grab your attention if you missed what was happening. This was an awesome display and re-enactment of a battle between allied and German forces right down to army vehicles and weapons.

The sound of the loud gunfire echoing through the streets certainly made it feel real that’s for sure.

So if you were thinking this was just the normal lazy sunday morning car show, then definitely think again and GET AMONGST next time!

Kat, Neil and the rest of the awesome committee put a huge effort into running this event.

It is certainly an awesome achievement from the team to put this type of event on in these current times, so I fully take my hat off to them and say a WICKED WELL DONE!!

It’s a pretty cool day out for sure!

BOWIE’S 40 SINS “Pure Gold“

So we are finally onto this golden gem in Ray Bowater’s awesome collection of cars tucked away in the shed.

This is the stunningly beautiful truck that lead me to saying “looove your truck” to Joy at Beach Hop earlier in the year and subsequently the previous articles where we featured Bowie’s Big Block Mach 1 Mustang, tunnel rammed T’Bucket and their two classy Mustangs of the modern muscle car era.

I can see why this truck grabbed Bowie and said “take me home” a year or so back.

The gold paint on this ride is simply stunning. It just gleams in the sunlight and simply glows in the shadows.

I definitely have the feeling that the Big Block 460 mid mounted on the chassis, sitting just inside the cabin also made up

Bowie’s mind on this one. Every other old school V8 in Bowie’s shed is a Big Block Ford as well.

If you get a chance to have a good look over this build with the hood up, you’ll see a fair bit of thought and engineering has gone into building this.

With the engine tucked right back under the front fire wall, the cooling and air intake to feed the 4 barrel carb tucked way back there is pretty cool!

An electric fan pulls air in from under the front guard to feed cold air into the engine bay to help cool things down along with air ducts mounted tight under the front valance feeding air in via K&N filters as well.

All this helps with keeping that thumpy big block cool, but at the same time gaining horsepower with the cool air feeding the carb rather than feeding off the huge header pipes leading into the twin three inch exhausts.

These trucks are actually a very compact

unit, so mounting a big block in there is no easy feat for sure!

The grunt is feed back to the huge rear tyres via a C6 automatic transmission to a trusty ole Ford 9” diff. The diff assembly hangs on a floating bar set-up with spring overridden shocks to keep the rear end sitting on the road rather nicely.

I actually took this for a drive thinking that it would be your typical old truck, bouncing and wandering along, leaning over in the corners, but to my surprise it just doesn’t do any of that!

There’s no power steering but it doesn’t actually need it with the weight moved back towards the centre of the truck. The steering is positive and with the big block torque to pull you out of the corners, it actually just goes with no hesitation at all. Of course the brake set up needed to be modified a fair bit to hang onto all this. So up front a set of disc brakes and callipers have been added with the large 9” drum brakes looking after the rear end.

– 1940 FORD PICKUP –

It has the appeal of a cool old race truck the way it sits and rides. The sound emitting from the huge twin exhaust poking out the back is just awesome. Being a truck with the cab sealed way in front of where the exhaust expels means you can still yarn away while cruising but still have that awesome V8 rumble in your ear. Bonus being there’s not grunt lost from squeezing that exhaust down to keep things quiet.

The rear tray is finished in vanished wood and stainless trim. The hardtop has been added which is awesome for tucking away your goodies when cruising.

With that big engine sitting right next to your feet, there’s definitely no room in the cabin for anything that isn’t needed that’s for sure!

This truck is certainly a different way of cruising from your typical hot rod or muscle car.

It handles a whole lot better than most hot rods but you are still sitting up quite high because you are actually in a pickup.

The big block torque out of corners deceivingly gives you the feel of a muscle car so it’s a whole new experience cruising in this amazing looking and well thought out truck!

I can easily agree with Bowie on this one, it’s an awesome truck!

Give me the dirt…

PICK-UP Rattle & Bang GREG

Here’s another one of those “didn’t expect that” moments when you meet someone for the first time and they have a cool ole truck sitting next to the one you went to see.

The pair of them were looking like a couple of old farm trucks just begging to be photographed in my eye. As you can see in the photos the owners weren’t too dissimilar either … hehehe

This is Greg Spooner’s Ford Pick-up built in 1933, making this ole girl eighty-eight years old!

Now that’s pretty cool to think that

this original body shell and interior has managed to get through a World War, the Great Depression and endless amounts of miles slaving as a work horse before finding its way to New Zealand.

Luckily it was saved from a restorer and had a small block Ford Mustang 302 V8 dropped into it.

Suprisingly enough, it is actually still pretty original, hence the name “Rattle and Bang”.

That is the nick-name Greg’s partner Inger named her due to the noises it makes when they get out cruising with the Kaiaua Kruisers.

There are still areas with the original factory green paint when painted in the Dearborn Michigin Factory in Detroit.

SPOONER’S

That’s pretty cool.

She’s no speed demon or hard out cornering rocket, she’s a cool, old-school cruiser to wander along enjoying the scenery, just like the era it was first built in. Although with that small block sitting up front it can still boogie when need be.

Greg found “Rattle and Bang” on Craigslist back in 2014 and had it imported with the help of CFR doing the logistics. Of course getting all this through certification had its own headaches like the front being removed for crack testing and the certing of the small block in there not exactly being original but it all worked out good in the end.

As life goes, the 33 was actually sold and headed to Wellington as a promotional vehicle before heading further south to

Invercargill.

A friend of Greg’s spotted it on Facebook for sale a short time later and without hesitation, Greg bought the ole girl back sight unseen.

Isn’t it funny how these things just happen. It’s almost like it was meant to come back home and chill out on the coast.

She still has the old original 33 steering box, no power steering or power assist brakes so Greg still gets the old-style man handling driving sensation when out cruising and that “ohhh” feeling of drum brakes that we never forget!

But that is what this truck is all about, like cruising the streets in American Graffiti looking for cheeky fun and mischief.

AROHA CRUISE IN 2020

This is such an awesome day out! Right on the foot of the Kaimai Range running along the eastern side of this historic township called Te Aroha, is this full-on day of entertainment and display of all sorts of automobiles.

Originally running as a weekend event with all sorts of cruises organised including cruising the retirement homes and offering rides and all sorts of entertainment going on.

This show day on the saturday seems to have turned into the kick-off day for the summer car show season.

Car clubs from all over the North Island roll into Te Aroha to get amongst it bright and early on the saturday morning.

From old school rides, vintage and classics come along to park up with a heap of hot rods, muscle cars and even late model supercars making for an amazing walk-about up the main street.

The show has grown so much since kicking off in 2018 that now the show extends into the surrounding side streets with well over a thousand cars rolling into town.

The variety of clubs that participate is awesome! I honestly don’t think there is any other show that attracts the variety with the quantity of club members to get along.

With clubs arriving in mass, the town carparks fill pretty fast including the centre strip of the street.

Retro caravans and all get towed into this show.

The town really gets into the day making for an awesome atmosphere with live bands playing all along the main street. Rock ‘n roll dancers get amongst it in the centre of town and then there is a retro fashion pageant for all ages to mix it up as well.

The event is run by the Te Aroha Business Association with local schools and clubs invited to get amongst it, raising funds for their various causes by running raffles and food stalls.

From face painting to hot dogs, it’s all happening along the main street.

Prizegiving for the cars is held at around 2pm with a massive amount of donated give-aways for spot prizes and of course

prizes for the publics vote for Best Car and various other prizes for Best Ford, Chev and so on.

The cruise itself to Te Aroha is well worth doing on any day. The wide open flat Waikato country makes for an awesome drive. The early birds get to catch the mist and the sun rising up over the Kaimai range making for a spectacular sight while cruising along.

Te Aroha also boasts the only soda water geyser in the world so apart from being one of the true historic towns of the Waikato area, this little sleepy town tucked away off the beaten track certainly kicks things into action when they want.

Unfortunately this years event was called off but definitely put February 5th in your diary as the new date to get along to this awesome day out!

Catch you there!
