GET AMONGST the awesome Bi-Annual Tararua Rodders Chrome and Custom Show then smoke-it-up with the EPIC LOLIFE Burnout Comp in Kaikoura. Plus check out BurgerFuel’s awesome Aussie Hardtop and 401 - a Rat Rodded Pick-up.
This month we have gone from rolling around the countryside trying not to get lost on mystery rallies to full-on indoor shows and a CRAZY FULL-ON burnout event in Kaikoura! But in the famous line from American Graffiti “aint it cool!”
I guess we are heading full noise into the summer car show season now, so things are obviously going to get busier. It really is awesome to see so much going on around the country again. It’s a mission to pick which event to get to now with so much on, but how cool is that problem to have!
The drag racing season has just kicked off again too, so we will endeavor to get some of that action into the magazine as well. I really should stop calling this a magazine. It really is a full-on active book now isn’t it!
Don’t forget, if you want a hard copy for the coffee table, just drop me a line and I’ll sort it out. We can print any issue at any time.
I have to say I’ve been super spoilt this month too. On the LOLIFE LIMO to cruise off down to Kaikoura for the LOLIFE Burnout event with the crew, capturing the full goings-on of the event. That was such a cool trip! Arnie, Stacey and the crew of LOLIFE plus all the contenders and hangers on certainly looked after me and made it an awesome event to get amongst! The Burnout family are an awesome bunch to be involved with for sure. The laughs and comradery are just awesome!
Next up is jumping in the Garage crew to get amongst the Wana Hop
do every year from Christchurch to Wanaka and back.
There’s another awesome bunch of people who I have been catching up every year at Muscle Car Madness since first going some four years back.
It really is what I love about this crazy car scene, the laughs and the people you meet who soon turn into great mates. It must be the like-minded thing or something, but it certainly is an awesome crowd to be involved with.
I know I keep saying it, but thanks sooo much to all of you who get behind this magazine, DOH, BOOK!
I fully appreciate the support with our posts being shared online to get this out and about in front of new people. We have amazing support from our sponsors which has grown again this month with CHEMZ coming on board with their performance based aerosol products.
The background behind CHEMZ is awesome! Being 100% NZ owned and developed, owner John Berry already had an involvement in this scene many moons ago in the drag racing circle. So to see CHEMZ involved here is just awesome! Check out their ad in this issue and grab the link to check out their full range
of products, it’s HUGE!
Anyway, it’s full noise back into it here. The crazy Christmas season will be upon us before we know it.
Be careful of them scams where you think you’re buying your partner a nice outfit, but it turns out to be car parts! I hate it when that happens …. every time!
ROCK N’ ROLL ALL and GET AMONGST!
Cheers, Giggles (aka Bogan)
Holy, what a crazy busy month this has been and what awesome events we have had!

biggest engine you could get your hands on between them chassis rails. Nothing else really mattered, just make it go fast and hang on was the deal!
This cool little rod here used to roll around my own town and I’d see it heaps of times. I’d grab a few shots of it every now and then, but never really climbed over it and fully checked it out.
Which is dumb but fully typical right!
So, after tripping off down country on a six-hour drive, I pull up to a mates shed and to my surprise, here it is parked up as if it fully owned the place and been there forever!
Originally built in Whakatane, Warren and Lorraine from New Plymouth spotted this
Warren being a rather tall dude, I was kind of wandering how the fit would go when I first meet them, but when you see Warren and Lorraine cruising around in this cool little rod, you can see they are pretty at home in it by the smiles on the dials!
On first appearance, you could think this has been built along the Rat Rod styling, but it’s actually a really tidy, well-built and thought-out machine. The fender less styling with the cross-ply tyres and matte paint take it back to its era of dry lake racing with the bootleggers and returned servicemen tricking up the old cheap cars to go faster by unbolting the fenders and anything else that wasn’t required for speed. The next step being dropping the
The 401 sign written the old school way onto the doors refers to the Buick Nailhead V8 engine slotted in there. They are a relatively big unit, not known for being a high horsepower screaming engine but definitely known for the amount of torque they produce!
With the triple progressive carb set-up like this has, you can be sure this little rod is going to jump off any start line and leap out of corners as if being chased by the Prohibition agents!
The awesome amount of pin stripping hand painted on pretty much every panel is truly outstanding.
The hours and patience to produce this sort of work is an absolute credit to

whoever can. Charles Chaz Allen was the man behind the brush in this instance and the detailing is truly awesome to check out.
Warren and Lorraine are no strangers to the hot rod and muscle car scene. This 34 sits proudly next to another 32 Coupe and pretty cool flamed out XM Falcon Coupe, but I think the giggles they get cruising LOZROD here is a whole different level by the smiles.

We corral this staunch fast-back steed to fully check it out!
Normally the Tararua Rodders run this show as a bi-annual event, inviting some of the top cars in New Zealand to come along to get amongst the show inside the Horowhenua Event Centre.
Being an inside show is just awesome! It means the cars can be fully displayed with lights and features that turn an everyday Hot Rod display into a work of art!
This year’s event was a year late due to all our restrictions last year, but the silver lining was that it fell on the fiftieth anniversary of the club, how cool is that!
What better way to celebrate an event like that than to fill up two huge buildings. One with awesome Hot Rods
SHOW 2022 CHROME & CUSTOM
and Muscle Cars, the other with full-on Race Cars and Dragsters.
Stuart & Gaye Anderson’s cool 38 Chevy Coupe from our previous issue was on display as part of the celebration. Having owned their coupe for fifty-two years, they are one of the founding members of the club and still involved today with the original car. Now that’s a rarity by itself!
I was lucky enough to wander around the show during set up to capture the cars with the camera’s as when sunday rolled around for the public to enter, the whole place was buzzing with people and action going on.
The car park out the back soon filled up with cool olds-cool cars wandering in to get amongst the action making for a show all by itself.
Out the front of the display buildings, more Hot Rods and Classics parked up
amongst the cool line up of Dragsters, including front engine rails and a couple of nostalgic Drag Cars blasting the atmosphere with a start-up’s throughout the day.
You seriously can’t beat the adrenaline of a methanol snorting monster punching compression through the air to punch you in the stomach while your eyes are wanting to water and your ears cringe with every rev. From the very first rev of one of those monsters, the crowd would appear from everywhere to catch that action!
Inside the event centre was like stepping back in time to a car sales yard from the fifties and sixties.
From your three and five window coupe Hot Rods to the beautiful styling of sixties Buicks, it seemed like the modern era had lost all style.
This is one of those shows that is certainly worth waiting for.
The seventies didn’t get missed out either with an awesome display of Mopar’s lined up and a tough section for the Muscle Car era with some stunning Nova’s and custom Pick-ups from Kruzin Kustoms on display.
Through the centre of the display was an awesome collection of rides from the Bay Rodders Club travelling down from Tauranga to get amongst the action for the first time. In amongst the race car display were some seriously cool old school drag hot rods. Shiny huge blowers, big hats and carburetors just the way we love them through to a Muscle Car series Monaro and Dion Crook’s awesome looking Front-end Dragster. Everything about this show is oldscool.
I fully love the indoor shows. The presentation of the cars is always above and beyond what you get at outdoor shows with themes incorporated into the displays along
with the lighting to fully show them off.
After getting to this show a few years back, it’s always been on my “to do” list to get back to it again.
The variety of cars and displays is fantastic.
From an original twin steer training motorbike to a custom stretched chopper, classic road bikes, custom builds and NOS snorting late model builds, there is always something you haven’t seen before at this show.
The build quality is certainly out the gate now as well. Capturing these builds on display to be able to see the finishing and construction details is awesome. We certainly have some world standard builders here in NZ. Definitely keep an eye out for the flyers for this show in Levin again in two years’ time, it’s definitely one for the “to do” list!

BURGERFUEL’S
XA FAIRMONT HARDTOPFord Falcon Freak out ON THIS RARE BIRD
A stunningly cool and rare 1972 Ford Falcon XA Fairmont Hardtop. In my opinion - one of the coolest shapes to come out of the Aussie Muscle Car scene of the seventies.
BurgerFuel rightly prides themselves on their involvement in the Muscle Car scene and what an iconic vehicle to have in their fleet of awesome rides.
Every kid back in the seventies would have watched the GT version of one of these roaring around Bathurst at some stage and thought “I’m gonna get me one of them”, - I know I did!
With them huge rear guards to slot wider
wheels under, the sleek design of the roof falling back into the boot space and the sound of that thumpy ole Cleveland V8 engine up front, these coupes were something totally new to the scene and soon dominated the racetracks to prove their point.
Ford developed the hardtop to compete with the Monaro of the time. It was the first vehicle Ford Australia had developed not based on an American Ford and definitely had the racetrack in mind during development.
These Fairmont models were the luxury version of the Falcon. The hardtops having longer doors with frameless windows so with the rear window down as well, it gives a full open space from the rear pillar to the front. The pillarless doors seeming huge when open to allow
access to the rear seats.
Inside, the dash is designed to feel like the cockpit of an aeroplane. The instrument fascia wrapping itself around the driver to have full control of everything. The passenger gets an air vent only and even that is controlled by the driver!
It’s not a bad design really as most passengers are hanging on tight to the seat and door handle anyway.
The custom work and finish on this ride is simply awesome. From the custom three tone fade-away pearl BurgerFuel colour that changes from blue to violet as the light moves over the huge guards to the custom white interior with purple piping makes this build stand-out in any car show or drag strip.
Hold on tight because we’ve ripped back into the BurgerFuel Cave to feast on this rare bird right here.
The boot hasn’t been left alone either. Huge sub-woofer speakers are mounted into a custom panel finished to match the side panels holding the stereo amplifiers. “FORD FREAKOUT” cnc cut in a stainless-steel panel mounted to the boot lid with the BurgerFuel emblem incorporates the coupe into their fleet of cool olds-cool cars.
Up front under that long sleek bonnet is the heartbeat of the Ford Falcons.
The good ole Cleveland V8 stroked to 383 cubic inches of thump fills the engine bay to the point of having to squeeze your hands in to change the spark plugs.
The air gap manifold feed by the Holley four-barrel carb fully set to hit the drag strip and make it scream.
An MSD electronic ignition provides the spark for this big banger to produce the thump that these Cleveland’s are known for, so all in all, it’s a package to put a smile on your face for sure. All this grunt is feed back to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission to a trusty ole nine-inch diff to spin the rubbers when the jandal is given.
There certainly isn’t many of these hardtops around anymore. Everywhere you park one up is someone who knows of one in a shed somewhere, but for the actual number driving around on the road, I would say there is only a couple of handfuls from what I’ve seen.
They really are a car that make people smile, bringing back memories of a misspent youth trashing a now collectable automobile to the point of making you cringe at the value of what was trashed.
This bird here certainly gets looked after well now. It still gets out to play like the old days at the drag strip when Vika has her hands on it. The Cleveland thump bringing out the race car demon in her to show what Muscle Cars are all about.

Any other cool cars in the shed?
At HQ we have a ’65 Dodge Coronet,‘64 Buick Riviera and a Plymouth GTX and our awesome Franchisees around the country have an array of Muscle Cars.
Favourite style of car? We love our Coupes but anything in the Muscle era
Favourite band /singer to go cruising with on the stereo?

Anyone you would you like to thank for helping with the car?
Rapid Radio for the sound system, Fuel Conversions and Auto Repairs for the mechanical maintenance, Steve Levine for the custom paintjob and Johnny Promo for sourcing our fleet back in the day.
Anything else you would like to add ….
Chris Mason and I (Johnny) had an idea when BurgerFuel was in its infancy that the cars we would use to promote the company would include a few iconic Australian/New Zealand brands from the Holden and Ford range.
The first one was a 67 Holden Monaro Coupe which had a built 350 Chevy sporting a tunnel ram and rolling on Crager’s all round. We had to have a “Mad Max” Falcon too and so the search was on. These cars were expensive and rare even back in 1999 so the search took three years before I even found a guy willing to sell one.The buyer wanted 25 grand which at the time was top dollar (ha ha, try 150 g’s nowadays) but I told Chris I was sure I could get him down a bit but should go to Hamilton and see it first. .....
I grabbed my girlfriend Tania and road tripped out to the farm where the car was kept and was surprised to see that the car was still in its original paint and showing no signs of rust at all.The guy told me the story of the original owner who purchased it from John Andrew Ford when it was being used to promote the next year’s model and was doing the rounds of all the dealerships. The Farmer bought the “Demo” car from Ford and used it exclusively to drive around his farm with rare trips out to the shops for groceries. I asked the guy if he would take a lesser offer of 19 grand in cash and he eventually caved and accepted. I called Chris and he wired me the money and the deal was done the same day.
I got the car back to Auckland and immediately stripped the original paint (don’t worry, it was all but completely faded and looked crap) off before getting good buddy Steve Leviene to lay down the Purple Fade. Next up I got the car over to Kelly’s Upholstery where he stripped off all the original (and very ugly) brown vinyl and replaced it with an off white “Naugahyde” with purple piping.
The drive train was a 302 ci Cleveland and FMX Trans with a 9 inch third member. The car ran fine so the engine bay was just cleaned up and painted and left alone mechanically. As we wanted to make the car a standout I called up Boyd Coddington in the States and asked him if he could do a special one off set of his “Signature Series” 20 inches (that was really big back then) as at the time these size wheels were very rare and importation of them was limited to only a few suppliers here in NZ, we did a deal for a set with special offset to suit the car and received them shortly afterwards. The whole deal got wrapped up in time for a debut at the Kumeu Car Show in 2012 where it starred as the feature attraction at the BurgerFuel site.
The Fairmont was used exclusively to promote the brand at many store openings after that but perhaps its best moment was when I arranged shipping of the car back to its homeland in Australia for the grand opening of BF’s first store there in Sydney. The car actually attracted a lot of unwanted attention from the Police when they sieved the license plates one night outside the store and then the cops ….opps, can’t tell that story but that’s just another one in the long history of this, one of BurgerFuels most historic vehicles.

LOLIFE BURNOUT COMP. in 2022! Smokin Kaikoura
WICKED! What a crazy awesome extra-long weekend this was.
When Arnie Donaldson called me one arvo with the thought of joining them on the LOLIFE LIMO to capture this entire event from set-up to burnout comp and back again, little did he know I was already thinking just the same thing. So, as you can imagine, it was short conversation and straight into the planning of how it was all going to happen.
This is the second running of the LOLIFE Burnout Competition. The first was held at Meremere Dragway back in March which we covered in issue 12. The event was so successful that the thought was to take it on the road with Kaikoura in the South seeming a likely place to get amongst.
Craig Mackle, the Mayor of Kaikoura was all for it and jumped in to help get the ball rolling helping with what was needed to bring the show to town.
Arranging an event of this size in a town in another Island isn’t exactly an easy task, but with the enthusiasm of the local businesses getting behind the event to make it happen, pretty much everything went like clockwork. There’s always the “pretty much” part to organising something like this with a last minute “WTF” or two, but by set-up day, she was all rocking and ready for the show to begin.
The trip down to Kaikoura for us started at the crazy time of morning of 1am on the Thursday to catch the ferry across the ditch first thing before hitting the road again to Kaikoura.
Arnie and the LOLIFE crew had been hard out setting up the LOLIFE LIMO (bus) to get the crew all on to keep the team together for the trip which was an awesome idea.
It’s always a beautiful cruise heading into the South Island through the sounds and a great chance to chill and watch the world go by for a bit before hitting the road again.
Kaikoura was rocking and ready upon our arrival.
Fissenden Bros had already been putting in the time and effort at the burnout pad to make sure everything was up to scratch, including placing raised platforms for the spectators to give an awesome view of the pad.
Parking up at the Lazy Shag Motel for the weekend, the South Island gave us an awesome welcoming view with a fresh layer of snow on the hills overnight ready for set-up day the next morning.
Feeling like a community day out, this awesome burnout family of so-called competitors all rocked up to the pad together to get amongst, setting up fences, organising the parking and generally cleaning up the place ready for the comp the next day.
After a few last minute roar arounds organising bit n’ pieces, it was off to town to show the locals what the cars were all about and let them know we were there.
This was a great chance for the public to come along and suss it out for themselves and see just how much effort goes into building these cars to handle the extremes of screaming their guts out until the tyres blow.
If you haven’t actually checked out these cars in the flesh, then definitely do! There really isn’t much that hasn’t been modified or custom built to achieve living through the extremities that they are given in that two minutes of screaming!
Next up, COMP DAY! Saturday morning rolled around and it was all go!
Back to the pad for the final set up for the day and open the gates for the spectators to roll in.
With an awesome field of competitors rolling in for scrutineering, it was all go with around thirty cars lined up to scream it out on the pad.
Food and coffee trucks rolled in to keep the masses happy with fresh fish n’ chips and the day was set.
Kaikoura knew exactly what it was all about, putting on a stunning sunny day with only a slight breeze to clear the smoke making for an awesome day of burnout action to check out.
With a quick test skid, two rounds of burnouts for points and then the top ten to battle it out, it was a full action-packed day ahead.
Arnie dragged his LOLIFE roof chopped XC Falcon Ute out for a quick demo to show the boys how it’s done between rounds and then fully back into the action to the cheers of the crowd.
From the yarns I have had over the day, people had travelled from all over NZ to get amongst this action. A fair crowd rolled up from Christchurch and even down from the North Island just to watch.
Competitors came from as far away as Auckland in the North to Invercargill in the South to shred them tyres.
The pad is not big but also not too small, so the pad coverage became a big point scoring mission throughout the day. A few wall touches were going on with competitors trying to max them points out, but only one good hit on the wall was encountered over the day. Luckily the hit wasn’t big enough to stop the burnout so only a few minus points with the foot back into it full noise to carry on!
With only two rounds to get your highest point score, it’s pretty much “bring it all” if you want to get into the top ten.
If them mechanical gremlins sneak their way in it’s pretty much game over and you are on the side line watching the action with the spectators.
The quality and skill of the driving throughout the day was impressive to say the least.
With a fair few runs not coping any minus points from wall touches and reverses, it really did come down to pad coverage and smoke to get through to the finals.
Paul Henry with RUSTY8, his huge blown Bel Air Chevy swinging into action gave the crowd a massive show of smoke while Fats Nichol rocking his V8 powered Starlet showed how to throw down some donuts within the space of your living room took out “Best Tip in” for the day.
Hayden Wilby with NUTOUT is always a demon to watch. When it comes to pad coverage and full-on smoke fest, this man knows how to max it out, taking out the “V8 F/I” class with his screaming Blown Commodore.
Gaz Mathews with DSPRNG always puts on a massive show pleasing show with some great tip in action to crank it up.
I would have to say the most smoke action would have to go to Rob Simmons with his Frankenstein Falcon. This
purpose-built screaming Falcon fully filled the pad including the car with smoke to the point where neither he or the crowd knew where he was. Rob managed a second place in the “Naturally aspirated” class even though he got lost.
Che Watts with SLUG put on another massive showing with his laid out nostalgic 57 Austin Ute. This is such a cool unit to watch. Dumped to the deck with a screaming LS and a short wheelbase, how cool is that! He rocked away with “Promoters Choice” for the day.
The six-cylinder action was pretty fierce as well. From the “Barra the world faction” to an awesomely tricked-up V6 Holden engine in a Mitsi Lancer of Ryan Shirtcliffe’s. This little unit named VIOLENT seriously screams and produces smoke like you wouldn’t believe. Taking out the six-cylinder class and biggest rev’s of the day!
Local boy Tyler Gilbert took out the “Up and coming” pick of the day with his BA Falcon pulling an awesome burnout to finish his day off.
Although I had a full-on day on the camera trying to catch all this action, I
did manage to grab a ride with Mitchell Sveistrup in his LS powered Falcon KMTAXI. Now that’s a sentence you don’t say very often! But I have to admit, the LS was screaming! With a slight wall touch to drop a few points, it was a damn good smoke fest if I may say, grabbing third place in the “NA class”.
All in all, it was a massive day at the pad with a heap of awesome action to catch for both spectators and competitors.
Prize giving after is always a bundle of laughs and cheek with this crowd and as expected, Saturday night becomes a catch up for all with a few cold ones to laugh over.
Sunday for us was pack-up day at the pad before heading into Kaikoura to kick back and just enjoy the place.
If you haven’t stopped and chilled out in Kaikoura, then definitely do! The small beach town chilled atmosphere is awesome. Gazing back to the snowcovered range with the ocean right at your feet is a view you just don’t see very often. So, make sure to capture it if you get the chance instead of just ripping through.
Watch this space for this event to come around again for sure. It is definitely a
full-on action-packed event you will want to get amongst if you love a screaming engine and watching some very skilled burnout action.
I’m fully stoked I got the chance to leap in the LOLIFE crew to get amongst this entire weekend. The burnout family are an awesome bunch and unlike any other motorsport, it is a competition, but you wouldn’t think so with the comradery that goes on with all involved. It is definitely very very cool!
A huge thanks goes out to the LOLIFE crew and all the sponsors and supporters of the event! Without the sponsors, chances are these events wouldn’t happen. So please support them just like they give their support.
To Kaikoura, for everyone who got behind the weekend helping us out, YOU ROCK! Thank you sooo much! Cheers
