Climbing the Emissions Summit The recent 8th Integer Emissions Summit & DEF Forum (learn more, 10288184) brought together industry professionals from

around the world to discuss the challenges, the technologies and

the future of emissions reduction in the heavy-duty on- and off-highway vehicle markets. A blend of OEMs, aftertreatment technology providers, engine man-

ufacturers and association officials presented and conversed on topics ranging from market trends to Stage V to out-of-the-box technology solutions.

One topic that surfaced several times was the “All of the Above” solution to

reducing emissions. There is not going to be a single solution that magically

works for every vehicle’s specific variations in applications, environments and duty cycles, several people stated. Each vehicle can have unique space con-

straints, NVH requirements, emissions cycles, dosing strategies, ambient tem-

perature and altitude challenges...the list goes on. To think that there could be

one solution for all of the variation in the on- and off-highway vehicle market is, at best, wishful thinking.

There was also a reminder to recognize different regional requirements in

emerging economies such as India and China. “Economic challenges are real,”

Emission Solutions. The high cost solutions being integrated into high-end

aftertreatment system design is a key target for current and future aftertreatment During a panel discussion, Michael Pankonin, Senior Director - Technical &

Safety Standards at AEM, posed several questions about the idea of “Harmoniza-

tion” to bring a global standard for emissions regulations. The idea was met with mixed feelings about whether harmonization would ever be achievable, even in

a perfect world with an established infrastructure to standardize fuel quality and

accessibility. In the end, Guest made an interesting statement. “We live in a rapid-

ly changing world, so the silver bullet today is not the silver bullet tomorrow.” The world around us is technologically evolving at such a fast rate that many can’t

technology that would solve the world’s emissions challenges is too difficult to even speculate for many.

What about you? Do you have ideas of

a single solution that could revolutionize the emissions reduction world? Send it my way. I’d love to hear about it. |

entering economic slowdown After a strong second quarter, the U.S. economy has downshifted. The slowing of late has been a bit more than many were expecting. This, along with the situation in China, caused the Fed to delay its long-foretold initial interest rate hike. Economies throughout Europe continue to struggle. Even the dominant German economy has lost some luster. Despite the weaker Euro, softness in export markets is a problem. Go to oemoffhighway.com to sign up for our monthly ECONOMIC NEWSLETTER!

Oshkosh is unable to carry out any work related to the contract for the duration of the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO’s) review period, though Army spokesperson Michael Clow has said that the Army remains confident that Oshkosh’s platform would provide an affordable and substantial capability improvement to Marines and Soldiers.

Early in 2015, Sandvik Construction introduced its lat-

part due to the need to provide customers with improved

maneuverability. “We have had a well proven jumbo model with fixed carrier before, but the challenge has been the flexibility of it in the smaller tunnels,” he explains.

By adding an articulated carrier onto the jumbo, the

With the growing use of electronic components and systems has come the need for more awareness towards mitigating potential noise interference issues.

Interference is particularly chal-

as on a wheel. The more remote the sensor, the more wiring necessary

to connect it to other systems. And it’s the wiring, not the sensor itself, which is most vulnerable to the

noise interference. The actual sensor typically measures around 1 mm in size, making it too small to pick up

the much larger wavelengths of electromagnetic interference.

KEEP A PULSE on brake wear by Sara Jensen

Development of a sensor which can sense through stainless steel enables its use in a brake friction material wear application in extreme environmental conditions.

The ability to predict when a

component or system will fail is key to ensuring maximum uptime for equipment operators. As such, many OEMs and component manufacturers are contin-

prognostics capabilities into their

products to help reduce unscheduled downtime.

events to determine position of the activator and thus the thickness of

the friction material since the sensor is located directly on the material.

Long-reach excavators by Thomas Berry, Archivist, Historical Construction Assn.

In one of the tall tales of Paul Bunyan, he and his

crew became so productive in harvesting timber that they had to work

further and further away from camp, until they

reached a point where it

took so long to get to the HCEA ARCHIVES

stand being cut that by

the time they got there it was time to go back.

Excavators, both cable

and hydraulic, face a similar limitation. They can

break out and lift only so

of the center of rotation, and a traveling counterweight

out overbalancing, and the longer the reach to the digging weight has to be considered; the heavier the bucket, the

less weight it can handle beyond a certain distance from the machine’s center of rotation.

Cable draglines provided a way to get around this, because

they were capable of digging further away from the machine than could a backhoe. Plus, in theory it could dig as deep as needed. But only so much boom could be safely handled.

It took a while after hydraulic excavators displaced cable

excavators before the problem of digging at extraordinary distances from the machine was solved. A larger, heavier

excavators. Its elongated boom was mounted slightly aft was mounted to the boom and moved forward and back

as the boom and dipper were extended and pulled back, so that it counterbalanced the boom, dipper and bucket.

A hydraulically-operated cable winch pulled the bucket in through its digging cycle, and another cable was reeved

through a sheave at the pivot between boom and dipper

stick. The Priestman excavators had remarkable operating range; for example, the VC20 could handle a 1 cubic yard excavating bucket at ranges of up to 65 feet 6 inches.

Today, many manufacturers of hydraulic excavators offer

of their conventional counterparts, because of the weight

and counterweighting. But not every job was suitable for The earliest long-reach excavator known to this au-

vator models. Their buckets are much smaller than those versus reach problem, and they are powered entirely by hydraulic cylinders. |

The Historical Construction Equipment Assn. (HCEA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the construction, dredging and surface mining equipment industries. With over 4,000 members in 25 countries, activities include publication of a quarterly educational magazine, Equipment Echoes; operation of National Construction Equipment Museum and archives in Bowling Green, OH; and hosting an annual working exhibition of restored construction equipment. Individual memberships are $35.00 within the USA and Canada, and $45.00 US elsewhere. HCEA seeks to develop relationships in the equipment manufacturing industry, and offers a college scholarship for engineering and construction management students. Information is available at www.hcea.net, by calling 419-352-5616 or e-mailing info@hcea.net.

Years of excellence 1975 - 2015

The DSEE400 Engine and Pump Control module is designed and manufactured in the UK for high quality and reliability, offering many advanced features for a wide range of engine applications. Operating parameters, sequences, timers and alarms are easily changed, allowing the module to be adapted for use, allowing OEMs to standardize on one product, while covering multiple applications.

The DSEE400 is compatible with conventional engines and the latest Tier IV electronic (CAN) engines, providing built-in governor control, pump control, automatic and manual speed control including speed ramping, clutch control and flexible automatic start control. The CAN features include full DPF regeneration management to help prolong engine life. Many other features are included as standard.

The new DSEE400 is a compact, waterproof module with a combination of multi-flex and digital inputs, configurable outputs and a dedicated emergency stop function. Engine protections, status, diagnostics & alarms are displayed on a clear LCD screen in a choice of languages. An eight event scheduler covering seven days a week is included for specific or planned ‘run’ periods.

Configuration changes are easily made by downloading the DSE Configuration Suite PC Software from the DSE website, providing a userfriendly, licence-free interface.
