Vanguard delivers more Man-hours Per Gallon. By combining closed-loop EFI with the optimum displacement for zero-turn mowing, our 810cc engines can achieve a fuel reduction of up to 25%* versus a carbureted equivalent. That means your customers can do more with every tank of gas. When you consider how many man-hours they can log in a season, the savings could be in the thousands. And that’s some serious coin.

It surprises me every year when we reach the November/Decem-

ber issue. Looking back at the year, we’ve accomplished quite a lot. •• Starting the year off right, we relaunched our website, www.oemoffhighway.com, on the latest responsive design platform to give you the best online experience on any device. •• The January/February issue was the launch pad for our Smart Center column (check out this issue’s Smart Center installment on intelligent brake system technology on page 22). •• We tackled another CONEXPO with a stunning flip double-issue in March, on top of live IFPE show coverage from our news desk. •• April saw yet another new column, News Briefs, added to our pages as a way to overview significant ongoings in the industry. •• We also created and launched our new quarterly System e-Newsletters (Engine Revolutions, Drivetrain Technology Update, Fluid Power Progress, The Electric Age, In the Cab, and Efficient Design & Manufacturing). •• Our September issue held the first run of the Extreme Machine! column profiling vehicles working in the harshest environments and applications. •• The September issue also was packaged with the first ever Pump & Motor Spec Guide, which can also be found online at www.oemoffhighway.com/ specguide. •• This issue features a new column as well—The Big Picture, starting on page 30, which highlights just how far innovation, engineering and technology can go to benefit people beyond the owner/operator. •• Not to be forgotten, we recently joined a brand new company, AC Business Media, and turned the big 3-0! Could there possibly be any more we could do in one year? Yes.

We are also pulling together a brand new digital exclusive issue set to be

released in December called the Year in Review. It will feature a slew of new

products, the hottest news of the year, the most popular articles of 2014 and plenty more.

A focus on foreign markets The U.S. economy

continues to improve. While there are domestic areas of concern, most seem manageable at this point. Attention has slowly been shifting to weaker economic conditions elsewhere in the world and the potential negative impacts they might have on the domestic economy. Europe remains in a precarious position. Sustained growth is proving hard to come by, and even Germany has lost considerable momentum. Add in the geopolitical tensions and it becomes hard to be very optimistic about the nearterm economic prospects for Euroland.

compaction,” says Scott Sloan, Ag-

creates a larger footprint which helps on the ground and thus the amount of soil that is compacted. “You’re

spreading out that load over a larger area which reduces your pounds per square inch,” explains Sloan.

One of the biggest challenges to ever-increasing size of agricultural equipment. “Fifteen years ago the

information, 12001612). “Today the

largest combine from the same OEM weighs over 45,000 pounds.”

While IF and VF tires were de-

signed to help compensate for this

issue, Sloan says the size and weight of equipment will continue to be

a challenge for tire manufacturers. Current equipment architecture

allows tires to be up to 80 inches tall and 27 to 28 inches wide. However,

Sloan says if the equipment gets any heavier while the architecture stays

the same, larger tires cannot be used and soil compaction will be affected. “The inflation pressures are going to have to go up and the load’s going to have to get transferred down to the ground.

“We’re backed into a corner right

now,” says Sloan. “Until manufacturers change the design of the

machine to allow larger tires to carry a [heavier] load, we have to increase

the inflation pressure which increas-

Rear combine tires are a current

example of this issue. While many tire manufacturers have VF technology for this application, there is only a

certain size of tire that fits into that rear tire space. If the next model

year combine goes up another 3,000 pounds, Sloan says tire manufactur-

ers will have to increase the inflation pressures to carry the load, putting

them right back where they started

Tracked agricultural equipment The increasing trend of tracked agricultural equipment was most apparent at the Farm Progress Show 2014 (event information, 10207424). Both Case IH and New Holland Agriculture introduced tractors featuring tires at the front and tracks at the back. Almost every OEM at the show had at least one piece of machinery on display equipped with tracks. And during an event in early August, John Deere gave a sneak peak of its prototype four-track tractor. While offering the benefit of reduced soil compaction, the tracks also make it easier for farmers to get into wet fields sooner than they could with just tires. New Holland said farmers using its T8 SmartTrax tractor were able to get into their fields three to four days sooner, enabling them to harvest their crops earlier (learn more, 12000313). Combining the tracks and tires also makes turning at full power in wet conditions easier for further productivity and safety improvements. Visit www.oemoffhighway.

is evolving, the overall footprint

Compared to tires, tracks offer the

benefit of creating a larger footprint without having to be wider in size, says Dennis Hare, Director of Sales

and Marketing for Rubber Tracks and Specialty Ag Products at Veyance

Technologies (company information,

of today’s equipment while reducing soil compaction. In addition, he says continuous rubber tracks can offer

footprint makes it easier for equipment to move through crop rows without disturbing the soil or the crops themselves.

[and] width limitations become more restrictive, rubber tracks become a

more attractive solution to the challenges in agricultural and industrial applications,” says Hare.

Dubuc adds that tracks have a low-

er surface pressure than tires which reduces the impact of vehicle load

on soil density. The longer footprint of the tracks also improves mobility in wet conditions by allowing the

track to move over soft spots with

little to no sinking, further protecting the soil. The tracks can help reduce

the amount of surface area compacted, as well. Using a combine harvester as an example, Dubuc explains

that to get a sufficient footprint to support a load in wet conditions,

the harvester would require wide

dual tires. However, each pair of tires

leaves a 60-inch wheel mark whereas the tracks only leave a 32-inch mark.

“The result is 40% less trafficked area, and tracks still offer 3.5 times more contact area,” says Dubuc.

The growing use of tracks can also

be attributed to their increased af-

fordability. Due to factors such as enhanced production technology, the

price of rubber tracks has decreased 30 to 40% in the past five years,

says George Valev, Director of OEM

the tracked equipment industry

continue to grow worldwide over the next few years. “Exceptional growth can be expected in the agricultural sector as the manual collection of rice in Asia has increasingly been

replaced by tracked harvesters,” he

says. “In the industrialized countries, more affordable, fuel efficient and less ground-compacting track-

equipped farm tractors are replacing the tire-equipped [ones].”

“It has often been said that tracks

are a complement to tires, a solution to the extreme. I would agree with

that statement,” says Dubuc. “What explains the growth in tracks is

that the extremes—extreme load,

extreme traction, extremely narrow widths—are now the norm.”

Mitas’ PneuTrac concept (learn

the best of both worlds in traditional pneumatic tires and rubber tracks,

says Mabin. The PneuTrac footprint is 53% larger than a standard tire and

provides a higher tractive force. “This

ensures gentle ground handling with

much lower and improved distribution of pressure on the ground,” he says. How tire and track manufactur-

now, thermoelectric generators are approximately $3,000/kW, but the

Variable valve actuation

Variable valve actuation (VVA) for heavy-duty engines is essentially

the same concept that is used on

light-duty automotive applications.

However, heavy-duty engines operate at a lower engine speed (<1,800

rpm) than automotive engines. This

requires valve timing and activation to be optimized differently. It also

must meet the expected useful life of the engine, which is typically

more than five times longer than a A CENTURY OF AUTOMOTIVE VISION SAFETY 90-21 144th Place, Jamaica, New York 11435 TEL (800) 227-2095 • FAX (718) 297-0323 Info@Roscomirrors.com www.roscomirrors.com www.roscovision.com oemoffhighway.com/10657065

allows the ability to optimize the fuel injection strategy and optimize peak cylinder pressure for a wide range of operating conditions and envi-

ronments. It is expected that closed loop control can provide a 2 to 4% increased efficiency over conventional open loop control.

However, adding complexity to

the system adds cost and potential reliability risks. Sensors must be

added to the cylinders to monitor pressure and temperature, along

with downstream NOx sensors and a controller that is capable of quickly processing the data. It is expected

to add approximately $30 to $50 per

cylinder to the system. However, the base technology has been proven in automotive engines, so it is a matter of scaling and developing it for the heavy-duty engine environment.

Together, we can improve fuel cleanliness and control your fuel quality processes.

December 7-11, 2014 Parker CLEANDiesel® in Booth 707 West Hall — Orange County Convention Center The engine manufacturers for generator sets have met strict EPA demands by developing diesel engines to reduce emissions for the Clear Air Nonroad Diesel Ruling of 2004. New power generator sets must meet the EPA Tier 4 Interim standards as well. These new engines provide customers with highly efficient power generator sets; however, those engines require a new level of clean dry fuel to operate effectively. To verify this fuel quality, Parker Velcon’s state-of-the-art fuel condition monitoring products provide real-time monitoring and trending of contamination levels and particle counts. Data from Parker’s CLEANDiesel sensors provide valuable fuel quality documentation in support of warranty claims. The monitoring is completed in real-time with immediate results. Critical application generator set operators benefit from high quality filtration and condition monitoring solutions that ensure the fuel quality necessary for optimum efficiency and reliability of today’s Tier 4 generator set. Velcon’s strength as the top provider of certified aviation bulk-fuel filtration products makes the organization highly qualified as the new leader in diesel bulk fuel filtration. CLEANDiesel filtration products provide diesel fuel users with the same type of fuel cleanliness required for jet engines. To effectively monitor fuel quality, Parker Velcon developed an Integrated Particulate Monitor (IPM™) Series. A cost-effective fuel quality monitoring system that permanently mounts to a power generator with a laser-based particulate detector module; organizations will find additional cost-effective solutions and contamination control and charting with reduced manual labor costs. The IPM can continuously measure for contamination utilizing established Parker particle counting technology. Cleanliness data shown on the display, saved on the instrument, and output onto customer systems. Benefits of the IPM system include: • Independent monitoring of fuel contamination trends • Cost effective solution • LCD display with alarm output warnings • Continuous or intermittent monitoring performance for dependable analysis • Full PC/PLC integration technology using Data Acquisition RS-232, ModBus, or CANBUS output • Principle of operation uses laser diode optical detection of actual particulates • Cellular telemetry and online data solution available

(STEM). STEM programs are designed to provide students

with the skills they will need for related careers, as well as showcase the types of jobs that are available.

Started in 1989 by Dean Kamen—an inventor and entre-

tions, such as FIRST Robotics. Along with encouraging an interest in STEM education, FIRST says its goal is to help

students build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills. Providing scholarships is also a big part of FIRST’s mis-

for several types of scholarships which have been made available through various universities and corporations.

against other student teams’ robots. The program has strict rules about how the robot can be designed and limits the resources students can use; each team receives a kit of

common parts from FIRST with which to build the robot and then has six weeks to create its design.

Building the robots provides students an opportunity to

learn how the science they are learning in the classroom

can be applied in real-world conditions. It also affords them a chance to learn new science and technology information and skills they might not otherwise have gotten in the

FIRST projects that in 2015 there will be 3,000 teams tak-

ing part in the FIRST Robotics Competition, reaching about 75,000 high school students in total.

Industry involvement

The STEM community has been very involved with FIRST

Robotics and the other FIRST programs. In addition to the

many scholarships available, corporations and universities volunteer their time and resources to help support the

FIRST ROBOTICS

efforts of FIRST. Many corporations donate the hardware and software used by the students during the design of their robots.

One of the many ways industry members can get in-

volved is by becoming a mentor or coach, helping guide a team of students during the design of their robot.

There are opportunities for both technical and non-tech-

nical minded individuals to volunteer their time to FIRST

Robotics, whether it’s mentoring a team or volunteering at one of the many events throughout the year. FIRST

estimates over 180,000 volunteer roles will be filled over the course of the 2014/2015 season.

STEM programs such as FIRST provide students across

the U.S. and the world with the opportunity to learn about science and technology and to see how it can be applied

outside of the classroom. They let students see what kinds

of potential job opportunities are available, and train them to become a more educated and skillful workforce, no matter what type of career they may choose. |
