Preppy fashion has its roots in the Ivy League style of dress, which started around 1912 and became more established in the late 1950s. J. Press represented the quintessential Ivy League style, stemming from the collegiate traditions of Ivy League schools. In the mid-twentieth century J. Press and Brooks Brothers both had stores on Ivy League school campuses, including Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. Preppy fashion emerged in the 1970s with cues from the original Ivy League style, along with influences from traditional Northeastern culture.
FASHION in 1990s
In the second half of the ‘90s, there was a revival of 1960s Modernist clothing styles and accessories. The revival consisted of collarless coats, slim-fit tailored pantsuits, checkerboard-print clothing, belted trench coats, and leather.
In 1995, the film Clueless inspired a rejuvenation of women's preppy clothing from the mid 1960s. The lead character Cher Horowitz had a profound influence on women's fashions, and she is considered a fashion icon of the 1990s.
The film and character popularized knee-high socks, thigh-high socks, blazers and skirts in matching plaid patterns, collared shirts, slip dresses, and microskirts.
Almost simultaneously with Clueless, 1950s ladylike fashions made a comeback in the United States. This included pencil skirts, cardigans, girdles, and fitted suits.Popular accessories that went hand-in-hand with this revival included brooches, white gloves, sheer stockings, diamonds, sequins, and red lipstick.

Girly Headbands - Nothing pulls an outfit together quite as quickly as a well-placed headband. The great news is that they’re inexpensive and available everywhere, so you’ll never run out of options. Pearl Jewelry - An absolute staple of any preppy and sophisticated wardrobe is a classic set of pearl jewelry. Real pearls are expensive, but awesome look-alikes can be found almost everywhere. Look for pieces that have a substantial weight to them and aren’t too iridescent in color. Fantastic Skirts - Whether you prefer A-line, skater, or pencil-style skirts, these babies are essential for crafting a sophisticated Blair Waldorf-inspired wardrobe. Get a mix of solid and patterned styles for maximum versatility. A Skinny Belt - More often than not, the difference between making an outfit go from “okay” to “wow” is by cinching the waist with a skinny belt. They’re more subtle than thick belts, so they won’t take away from the other elements of your ensemble. Plus, they’ll give you shape and look totally flattering! Mary Jane Heels - Regular pumps are great, but Mary Jane heels will give you a preppy, girly vibe that’s necessary when recreating this style aesthetic. As an added bonus, I find them to be much more comfortable than regular heels, since they fit around your ankle so well.
Get the hair Make sure your hair is clean and well-combed/ brushed. Well-groomed, shiny and clean hair is essential -- a lank, tangled and oily mane is not going to pass you off as preppy.
Wear simple Make up Preppy makeup (like prep hair) should look as natural and clean as possible. A common daily routine would be a light foundation that matches your skin tone, a touch of mascara, and lip gloss. You can also add subtle blush, light eyeliner or a classic lip matte lip color, such as coral or red. Avoid heavy eyeliner, clumpy mascara, sparkly anything (eyeshadow or lipstick), and bright eyeshadow. Remember: makeup should enhance your natural beauty, not obscure it.
LifeStyle Be polite
Make your attitude match your style - it should be clean, unfussy, and bright. Say “please” and “thank you,” and don’t swear or use slang. Know how to carry on a polite conversation without mentioning religion, money or politics, and without revealing too much about yourself.
Practice good posture
Stand up straight, and don’t slouch in your chair. The way you carry yourself will communicate to other people that you’re confident and poised.
Socialize
Most preps have a large social circle, and make an effort to run into these people often at parties or other events. When you go to a large gathering, try to have a quick conversation with everyone you know, and keep the positive connection going.
Play a preppy sport
Popular preppy sports include tennis, golf, rugby, lacrosse, rowing, polo, swimming, field hockey, sailing, squash, fencing, ballet, volleyball, track and field (mainly field events and distance), and horseback riding. Find something you like, and use it as an excuse to get some exercise and make new friends.
Take care of yourself.
The classic preppy silhouette is trim and fit. Achieve this by drinking lots of water, eating right, and getting plenty of exercise. Disciplining your diet and exercise shows that you’re capable of being a solid and disciplined person in other ways, too.
