2022

Welcome It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), one of the world’s most prominent trade shows marked by its dedication to improving offshore resources while addressing climate and environmental concerns. It is great to be back to an in-person OTC after two difficult years of virtually bringing together energy professionals. “The Russian invasion in Ukraine has shown once more that a strong and united Western alliance is necessary,” says Dutch Ambassador André Haspels.

This year’s OTC comes at a crucial moment. The Russian invasion in Ukraine has shown once more that a strong and united Western alliance is necessary to counter the military, political, and economic threats posed by authoritarian regimes and to jointly defend our values and interests. This is no different for the energy sector, where we need to decrease our dependency on Russian oil and gas, as well as speed up the energy transition. The Netherlands works with partners around the world, including here in the United States, to find innovative and sustainable solutions to meet energy demand while reducing emissions. In doing so, the Netherlands is dedicated to advancing the transition to renewable energy sources, such as by incorporating offshore wind technology and promoting hydrogen at scale. The challenges are real, and the need to work together in transatlantic partnerships is all the more apparent. The United States’ offshore wind market is concentrated in the Northeast, but the West Coast has potential. Many Dutch companies are either in or

4

2022

ready to enter the American market, and some of them have created a partnership for international business under the motto, ‘Wind and Water Works’. The Dutch position in offshore wind is highly regarded through its expertise in offshore engineering, craftsmanship, and marine operations. Collaboration on offshore wind infrastructure and more truly innovative projects, such as offshore green hydrogen, can advance energy as well as climate and environmental goals. The Netherlands has been Europe’s second largest gas producer for decades, but that has changed. The Netherlands’ infrastructure for both gas exports and imports remains, both through pipelines and our LNG import terminal in Rotterdam. On March 14 2022, Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten announced an expansion of the Dutch LNG import capacity. With the LNG terminal and developments on offshore wind and hydrogen, we are confident that the Netherlands will remain an important energy hub. Visitors from all over the world come to Houston for this conference.

It is a great place to network with clients, discuss trends in both the fossil fuel and renewable energy market, and explore new opportunities. The OTC is the place for the global energy community to come together to meet the challenges of energy security and reducing emissions, talk about opportunities for new partnerships, and strengthen those that exist. The Dutch have always had a strong presence at the OTC. We typically have one of the biggest pavilions featuring a diversity of participants, including multinationals, small and mediumsized contractors, and large manufacturers and suppliers. This year you can meet with more than 40 Dutch stakeholders in our over 9000-square-foot Holland Pavilion, as well as many other companies that are represented outside the pavilion.

We look forward to meeting you!

André Haspels Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United States of America.

Embracing the energy transition!

As Managing Director of IRO - The Association of Dutch Suppliers in the Offshore Energy Industry, I am proud to present you the latest edition of Offshore NL! In this edition you can read all about the products, expertise and high profile technological developments of leading IRO member companies such as DEME Offshore, Damen, Royal IHC, Van Oord, Gusto MSC, Delmar & Vryhof, and MARIN. Transition, the word that says it all. It is obvious that we need to keep adapting to keep up with the current developments in the offshore energy industry and the ever changing and unpredictable geopolitical circumstances. However, the Dutch offshore sector has proven to be able to cope with the difficult conditions through chain cooperation, strong entrepreneurship and innovation. After all, in every challenge lies an opportunity. Energy is a need which will only grow the next coming decades. Which means we need all the resources to provide in this daily requirement. However, renewable energy is not the only energy supply which can provide in this growing demand. We still need fossil-based energy since renewables can only supply 50 percent of the total energy demand in 2050. There is no question that a climate agreement

is necessary, the ecological footprint we leave on the planet is massive. However, since the world population is still growing, we can’t compensate the energy demand with renewable energy only. Furthermore, we also still depend on the good will of our government regarding financing all forms of energy. The Dutch offshore industry has been one of the top five in the world for fifty years. This position is due to a strong cluster of suppliers. Innovative companies are commissioned by the major energy companies to build, transport, install, maintain and clean up platforms, transformer stations and wind turbines after use. They play an important role in the current energy transition, which is largely being realised at sea. Therefore, we believe that the Dutch offshore industry will remain a major player in the global offshore market, in particular through the use of smart techniques and solutions for the many issues concerning the offshore energy transition. Great opportunities and challenges lie in making processes more sustainable. Ships can sail cleaner, on LNG and later perhaps also methanol or hydrogen. In addition, platforms and activities at sea can be made even more

efficient and environmentally friendly. The next step is to electrify the installations on the platform, first from the shore and later directly from a nearby Offshore Wind Farm. Innovating can only be done through strong collaboration. Whilst our IRO members will keep focusing on cost-efficiency, sustainability and innovation in conventional oil and gas developments on a global scale, the energy transition presents us with vast opportunities to maintain our position as a frontrunner in the global more and more renewable energy industry. The Dutch are ready since we are pioneers by heart! I wish you all a pleasant reading of the latest edition of Offshore NL and lots of good experiences with the Dutch suppliers in this dynamic industry! The Dutch look forward to doing business with you and hope to meet you at our Netherlands Pavilion and the Energy Transition Lounge at OTC Houston 2022! 2022

Since 2018, the RAR Plus has been deployed to release over 530 mooring lines on 64 different MODUs for efficient rig move operations, storm evasion, and ice avoidance.

Unmooring MODU Deepsea Stavanger

Lundin Energy and Delmar & Vryhof have success with RAR Plus™ Unmooring a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) from eight mooring lines in less than two hours is quite an achievement; especially, when comparing conventional unmooring times that take up to twelve to eighteen hours in ideal weather. In January 2022, this is what Lundin Energy Norway AS experienced using the Delmar & Vryhof RAR Plus™ Releasable Mooring System on the Deepsea Stavanger.

This semisubmersible offshore drilling unit is one of the largest active MODU in the North Sea, and Lundin’s actual drilling location was fairly close to the Norwegian coast with area characterised by bad weather conditions. In the words of Sigmund Andre Hertzberg, Senior Marine Supervisor at Lundin Energy Norway AS: “In close consultation with Odfjell, we therefore decided to deploy an anchor system consisting of anchors, chain and fibre rope,

in combination with the RAR Plus™ Releasable Mooring System (RMS).” Lundin was already convinced of the exceptional features of the RAR Plus™ System as they saw its advantages during a drilling campaign in the Barents Sea. Nonetheless, the quick release with a ‘single touch of a button’ to unmoor the Deepsea Stavanger in marginal weather conditions exceeded the operator’s

wildest expectations. The operational efficiencies of the RAR Plus™ Releasable Mooring System allowed Lundin to save substantial time, money, and reduce their NOx and CO2 footprint by having no vessels onsite when unmooring. Sigmund Andre Hertzberg has nothing but praise when talking about the fast and successful unmooring of the semi-submersible Deepsea Stavanger.

Cost reductions One of the primary advantages of deploying the efficient RAR Plus™ is that it removes the need for traditional anchor handling vessels during unmooring operations. Once a rig has completed drilling and is ready to move on, it is simply a matter of releasing the rig from the mooring lines at the ‘touch of a button’. In the case of the Deepsea Stavanger drilling project, Lundin Energy had anticipated that deploying anchor handling vessels to disconnect all the mooring lines would require a 12-hour operation, which in turn would result in the company requiring an 18-hour weather window. Moreover, the maximum permitted wave height would have been 3.5 metres HS, or the operation would have to be postponed. Sigmund Andre Hertzberg continued: “All-in all, we predicted a 12 to 18-hour disconnection operation for all the mooring lines with three vessels. Given the weather probability plot at the chosen disconnection time and our decision to deploy RAR Plus™, the result was a time saving of at least fourteen days. In precisely 1 hour and 50 minutes, the Deepsea Stavanger was ready for immediate departure

from the well location, without assistance from a single anchor handling vessel. Incredible, but true. For Lundin Energy, the time-saving achieved also meant no further rig hire, an overall reduction of the environmental footprint of the operation and on top of that, no need to pay daily rates for the anchor handling vessels. All we needed were a couple of boats to recover the mooring system, consisting of between 1000 and 1500 metres of round chain, 800 to 1200 metres of fibre rope and an 18t STEVPRIS MK6 anchor for each mooring line.”

which had acquired more than 35 years’ documented use in MODU ice avoidance operations. The most important new development is the addition of an independent mechanical backup release feature, which ensures the ability to still release the moorings in the unlikely event that the remote acoustic transmission fails to actuate the RAR. The backup mechanical release bypasses the acoustic, electronic and hydraulic systems in the RAR Plus™, and can be actuated from the trigger sleeve, thereby guaranteeing 100% redundancy within the system.”

Acoustic and mechanical release So what exactly is the nature of the RAR Plus™ Releasable Mooring System (RMS) of Jørund Havnerås, Managing Director at Delmar Systems AS, explained: “The RAR Plus™ is unique in that it allows immediate MODU transit following release of the mooring line using the RAR Plus™, from their secured position in the trigger sleeves against the rig’s fairlead. Delmar Systems introduced this new generation technology to the market in 2018. The RAR Plus™ is an enhanced version of the original RAR

The innovative RAR Plus™ also has a significantly increased minimum break load (MBL) of 907 tonnes, certified by DNVGL and ABS. As a result, with its robust shell and locking mechanism, the device is not the limiting MBL component, even in systems that include modern R5 high-strength components in their mooring line. High-quality project Lundin’s senior marine supervisor looked back with satisfaction, on a high-quality project off the Norwegian

9

2022

coast and the successful deployment of RAR Plus™. He was also delighted with the cooperation with the people from Delmar Systems. In Hertzberg’s own words: “Lundin Energy and Delmar Systems have already been working together for a number of years. Disconnecting the Deepsea Stavanger was the perfect opportunity to consider all the benefits of Delmar’s releasable mooring system, from a range of different perspectives, and to deepen our understanding of various components of the RAR Plus™

system. Although we faced a number of challenges during the preparation and execution phases of the project, we still maintained very open and honest dialogue, throughout. Lundin Energy and Delmar Systems have no secrets from each other, and that in itself is an essential precondition for successfully completing a complex project of this kind.”

The mooring system used during this particular drilling campaign in the North Sea, consisted of between 1000 and 1500 metres of round chain, 800 to 1200 metres of fibre rope and an 18t STEVPRIS®MK6 anchor for each mooring line. This anchor has been developed by Vryhof, the Dutch world leaders in the market for innovative and customer-focused anchoring and mooring solutions, which was acquired by Delmar Systems in May, 2021.

Due to their versatility STEVPRIS®MK6 anchors serve a wide range of mooring applications. Although the large majority serves the mooring of offshore units such as drilling rigs, FPSO’s and SPM buoys they are also widely used for various dredging, crane and pipelay vessels.

10

2022

Integrity builds Trust “Achieving this significant milestone without a safety incident or failure

The anchor’s geometry provides an extreme high weight/strength ratio. The fluke shape minimizes soil disturbance and its large surface provides the huge holding power that

to release highlights the talented nature of our workforce and the unique dependability of the RAR Plus™,” concluded Jørund Havnerås. “Completing an operation involving an eight-line mooring spread in under two hours represents substantial cost savings in rig and vessel time, for Lundin. We appreciate Lundin’s trust in deploying the RAR Plus™ on this valuable operation.”

is well in excess of 30% more than that of any other drag anchor today. STEVPRIS®MK6 has superior uplift capability. On a case to case basis uplift is allowed of 5 degrees in intact condition and 10 degrees in damaged condition. API rules suggest an uplift of 20 degrees, proven in tests to be possible without losing holding power. The uplift capability significantly increases the range of water depths in which rigs can operate on the same anchor spread.

Important focus area will be energy transition

Breman Machinery creates new initiative called Breman Innovation Breman Machinery has a track record of supplying mission critical offshore equipment. A project for Breman Machinery starts with an engineering package either in digital form or on paper. This is transformed in steel components of extremeproportions and precise dimensions. These are assembled - together with purchased items such as hydraulic and electric parts - so that ready-to-use equipment is supplied to clients.

For these clients however, the development of new offshore equipment starts much earlier with conceptual development and engineering phases. Sometimes even the installation method still needs to be developed in the early days. New initiative In order to also assist clients in those first phases Breman Machinery has decided to create a new initiative called Breman Innovation.

This new company will be managed by Arjan Boezeman. Arjan has previously worked for The Ocean Cleanup and for Norwegian shipbuilding group Ulstein. Before that he was one of two founders of an engineering company that built a track record of developing tools from a blank sheet of paper into convincing equipment proposals. With this addition in service, Breman Machinery is able to provide clients a wider scope of supply.

Important focus An important focus area of Breman Innovation will be energy transition, electrification and the reduction of the CO2 footprint of offshore operations. In addition Breman Innovation aims to be engaged in waste handling equipment and smart lifting tools. With this step Breman Machinery acts on the ambition to further strengthen its leading position in the supply of extreme offshore energy equipment.

Hugo Bouvy, managing director of DEME Offshore

‘Big boom will truly come in 2023’

Offshore NL spoke with Hugo Bouvy, managing director of DEME Offshore, and looked back on a year that was full of exciting announcements. At the time of this interview the world seemed almost ‘back to normal’, but it cannot be denied that the impact of COVID-19 and its unprecedented effects, have been huge. Business as usual seems definitively to have become a thing of the past. The number of physical meetings will certainly increase again, but some will be replaced by Teams meetings for ever.

12

2022

Hugo Bouvy: “So much has changed in the past year: the world around us, our family life, personal friendships, our social life, our business experience, and the place where we work, which many of us also call home. Living in the midst of COVID-19 has sparked fear, frustration and anxiety everywhere. Also within the ranks of DEME Offshore.” Lifeblood Looking back at 2021, DEME Offshore has become an even stronger and more stable market leader, thanks to innovative entrepreneurship and by striving for synergy within the Group. Bouvy: “Clients sometimes ask me why DEME Offshore is performing so well. My answer is always: our people are the best there are. They are the lifeblood of DEME Offshore. Both at sea and on land. They know that they have to work as a team and they

know how to implement that team concept in the operational execution of a project. It is with thanks to that mindset that DEME Offshore can successfully overcome any challenge.” Dedication The managing director of Dutch origin is convinced that DEME Offshore’s in-depth operational knowledge and expertise are decisive factors in the Group’s reputation on the international renewables market. “The main reason is that time and again we have proven that we understand the art of meeting our delivery agreements. No matter how challenging a project is, we still deliver on time, even in the face of the global COVID pandemic, that has for caused such difficulties over the past few months. We stand out from the competition thanks to our track record. For me, the successful completion of the highly competitive

Moray East project was one of the star achievements in 2021. Another more recent example is the drilling of the monopiles on the Saint Nazaire project. These performances have been achieved in record time and represent modern-day feats of innovative engineering. In SaintNazaire not only were we the first to install a wind farm, in rock, using industry-first technology; the project has also been carried out in the face of harsh Atlantic conditions, by our own installation vessel Innovation. This and several other projects completed by DEME Offshore have demonstrated that COVID-19 has almost no impact on our operational capabilities at sea; we have shown in 2021 that we are excellently capable of fully managing the disruptive consequences of COVID-19. For wind farm developers, the key lies in operating with a contractor they can

13

2022

rely on. DEME Offshore is fortunate to have such a team of dedicated employees.” Highlights The absolute commercial highlight in 2021 was the signing of the Dominion contract. In financial terms, this +Euro 1 Billion Balance of Plant (BoP) contract for the construction of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project is the largest contract DEME Offshore has ever signed. Involving the transport and installation of 176 monopile transition piece foundations, three offshore substations, scour protection and the supply and installation of export and interarray submarine cable systems, the agreement is the largest offshore

14

2022

wind installation contract ever awarded in the USA. Hugo Bouvy: “This contract truly represents an absolute breakthrough for DEME Offshore in the wind sector in the USA, and can be fully credited to Jan Klaassen, Director of DEME Offshore US LCC, Sid Florey, President of DEME Offshore US together with his American team, and, of course, our partner Foss Maritime.” In 2021 and early 2022 the same team signed and sealed contracts with Vineyard Wind for the transportation and installation of the monopiles, transition pieces and wind turbine generators for its Vineyard Wind 1 project and for the installation of an offshore electrical substation

foundation and platform. A third contract concluded in the US involves the cable installation for New York’s first offshore wind farm South Fork. Non-renewables So far we have only talked about renewables; but non-renewables is another market segment in which DEME Offshore has an international reputation to maintain. How would you describe the level of activity in this sector? “Moneywise the level of activity differs significantly from the renewables market,” admitted Bouvy, “but we managed to achieve a reasonably healthy occupancy rate for all our fall pipe vessels. We have also undertaken rock-installation projects in the North Sea and in the

Gulf of Mexico, and executed a series of landfall projects. And we are also heavily involved in the Hinkley Point C nuclear powerplant project in the UK. That alone is an extensive proposition.” Global scale Offshore wind is a rapidly maturing, climate-friendly energy technology that is poised to play an important role in future energy systems. It is set to expand strongly over the coming decades and it is DEME Offshore’s objective to provide the state-of-the-art installation technology solutions needed for this green power revolution, on a global scale. Currently under construction at CSBC in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the installation vessel Green Jade will be immediately deployed for the Hai Long and Zhong Neng Offshore Wind Projects after entering service. And mid-January DEME has entered into an agreement with Norwegian shipping company Eidesvik to acquire DP3 offshore installation vessel Viking Neptun. Built with one turntable capable of handling 4,500 tonnes of cables below deck, DEME will further boost Viking Neptun’s capacity by adding a second, 7,000 tonne cable turntable on deck. The addition of the vessel in the last quarter of 2022 is in line with DEME’s strategy to deploy the most versatile and high-tech fleet in the industry. DEME already operates the pioneering, DP3 cable installation vessel Living Stone, renowned as one of the fastest and most efficient vessels in the cable installation sector. Hugo Bouvy commented: “After securing the Dogger Bank A and B inter-array cable contract early 2021, mid-December we could also confirm the inter-array cable contract for the Dogger Bank C wind farm. This contract not only

demonstrates the unrivalled cablelaying capabilities by our DEME Offshore team, it is also further testament to the stellar reputation of our DP3 cable installation vessel Living Stone.” Other exciting news is that the brand new installation vessel Orion will be deployed for the first time in Q2 this year on the Arcadis Ost 1 project in the German sector of the Baltic Sea. When it comes to renewables, DEME Offshore was primarily operating in the North Sea but has now grown into a well-respected international player, with local partners. Hugo Bouvy explained: “Over the past two years we have entered into partnerships with reputable companies in countries that have indicated their support for the development of offshore wind farms. As previously mentioned, we are currently working together with CSBC in Taiwan, we have established a partnership with Foss Maritime in the USA, and in April 2021, we entered into a joint venture with Penta Ocean in Japan. For the growth market around the Baltic Sea, we have deployed a manager from Poland to act as our frontline player. We present ourselves worldwide as a market leader, while our local partners converse at an early stage with various local parties, on a daily basis. These discussions are of course supported by our experts, who deliver a convincing technical back story.”

Big Boom Although the order books for all units are fairly well filled for 2022, in Hugo Bouvy’s opinion, the big boom will truly come in 2023. “We are almost completely full for that year, and the same applies for 2024 and 2025. In view of the number of new projects that have been and still are to be announced, we expect no real change for 2026, 2027 and 2028.”

Two successful ScotWind bids Mid-January, 2022, Crown Estate Scotland announced that Thistle Wind Partners (TWP), a consortium of DEME Concessions (Wind) NV (42,5%), Qair Marine SAS (42,5%), and Aspiravi International NV (15%), had been awarded 2GW worth of option areas in Scotland’s highly competitive ScotWind seabed leasing process. The consortium’s successful projects are: Cluaran Deas Ear: a 1 GW fixed foundation project in the 187 km2 E3 plan option area; Cluaran Ear-Thuath: a 1 GW floating foundation project in the 201 km2 NE2 plan option area which is envisaged to be developed in two phases.

chapeau Wind Installation in U.S. Offshore

Creating supply chain opportunities Meeting the U.S. offshore wind target of 30 GW installed capacity by 2030 will present significant supply chain opportunities. For example, new port upgrade investments could total more than $500 million; new U.S. factories could be built for major windfarm components; additional cumulative demand of more than 7 million tons of steel-equivalent to 4 years of output for a typical U.S. steel mill; and the construction of specialized wind turbine installation vessels (WTIVs) in U.S. shipyards. Developing Charybdis The construction of the Charybdis WTIV is an important step, led by a major developer in Dominion Energy and supported by a consortium of renowned naval engineering and fabrication firms. Dominion Energy is presently working on a 2.6 GW project in Virginia to be built in three phases

16

2022

in 2024-2026 and expects the vessel to be fully utilized on a pipeline exceeding 5 GW of U.S. offshore wind construction through 2027. By making this investment, Dominion Energy will secure availability of the installation asset, minimizing project risk. In addition, the vessel is available for charter when not

occupied in Dominion’s own projects and has already received a first contract for Ørsted-Eversource’s Revolution and Sunrise Wind projects for a total of 1.6 GW of turbine installations. The Charybdis is likely to enter service in 2023, based out of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia.

Jones Act-compliant vessel The vessel is a GustoMSC NG-16000X-SJ design being built at Keppel AmFELS, Brownsville, Texas, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine. Seajacks, a subsidiary of Eneti, is assisting Dominion Energy with construction and operations oversight. The concept of the four-legged, self-propelled jack-up WTIV evolved over time as a solution of choice to both efficiently transport and safely install offshore wind turbines from a stable platform while minimizing downtime but needs to comply with the Jones Act. The Jones Act is a federal law that regulates maritime commerce in the U.S. and requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on ships that are U.S. built, owned, and operated. For the purposes of the Jones Act, a bottom founded (fixed) wind turbine foundation is considered a U.S. port.

represents the load in tonnes applied to each leg during pre-driving and X indicates a truss leg with X-bracing (a robust structural configuration).

With turbines of 15+ MW on the horizon later this decade many WTIV owners have selected designs from the GustoMSC series as a basis, in particular the NG-14000XL, NG-16000X and NG-20000X designs. NG stands for Next Generation (self-propelled and DP), the numeral (e.g., 14,000)

Pioneering engineering As part of the project risk mitigation strategy, Keppel AmFELS and GustoMSC performed significant engineering prior to signing the construction contract. These activities included model testing, noise and vibration analysis, and leg material welding

To better understand the scale of these vessels, below you see the comparison of the Seajacks Scylla (NG-14000XL design) with one of the largest jack-up drilling units in operation, the Noble Lloyd Noble (CJ70 design). The deck area, DP and propulsion capability, fast jacking, and the ability to repeatedly preload to very large loads distinguish the WTIV vessel from a drilling rig. In fact, the deck area of a WTIV can exceed that of a football field and while preloading each of its legs and jacking system sees loads that far exceed the weight of the Eiffel tower (approximately 10,000 tonnes) or the thrust of a Saturn V rocket (approximately 3,500 tonnes). This is not just done once but multiple times, since a WTIV is designed to move as well as jack up and down 150 times per year.

procedures and qualifications. The results together with the engineering design drawings were submitted to ABS for review at an early stage of the project. In addition, Keppel AmFELS worked closely with major equipment suppliers to ensure key activities were performed prior to contract. The overall project cost, inclusive of construction and commissioning and excluding financing costs, is estimated to be around USD 500 million, creating nearly 700 direct construction jobs for skilled workers, and utilize more than 14,000 tons of domestic steel, with nearly 10,000 tons sourced from Alabama and West Virginia suppliers. Supported by an efficient design, highly-skilled local workforce, state-ofthe-art equipment and reliable suppliers across the U.S., Keppel AmFELS is confident in delivering a high-quality vessel to Dominion Energy safely, cost-effectively and on time.

The insights and experience gained with the concept development, design, and construction of Charybdis, will benefit the next generation turbine installations in the U.S. and worldwide, and promote the collaboration of future wind turbine supply chain development.

Bakker Sliedrecht introduces new sustainable technologies At this moment, the entire maritime sector contributes to around 2.2% of the global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The U.N.’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) has defined a target for the entire industry to emit 70% less emissions in 2050, compared to 2008. To achieve this goal, we as the maritime industry have to integrate sustainable powerplants in new build vessels and design solutions to improve today’s operational fleet. Vessels that are built at this moment are likely to remain in operation until 2050. IMO’s defined sustainability ambition applies to all major vessels, including the international offshore and dredging industry.

Today’s challenges for tomorrow’s fleet

New build vessels currently last up to 30 years. This means current designs and new build vessels already have to take the zero emission future into account. But how do you prepare the powerplant of your vessel for future technologies? In addition, what are the

18

2022

major technical issues dredging and offshore companies face today?

and fuels, digital monitoring and maintenance.

Bakker Sliedrecht helps shipbuilders and owners with these challenges by providing sustainable technologies in the field of alternative energy carriers

A global maritime effort OEM’s, research institutes and universities worldwide are currently developing different technologies to

generate or store renewable energy. Developments in technologies such as DC-grids and hydrogen seem very promising to reduce the environmental footprint of vessels. Due to the rapid succession of developments, the flexibility of adapting new (sustainable) technologies during the total lifespan of a vessel is of crucial importance. Efficient and modular use of new technologies Bakker Sliedrecht introduces the Energy Storage Solution (ESS) to meet this demand of flexibility of the powerplant. The ESS is a modular hybrid energy solution that enables existing ships to be made ready for the use of sustainable energy carriers and generators with only limited intervention. The modular solution is packaged in an ‘easy to transport’ 20-40ft container that can be directly connected to the on-board energy network. The ESS can easily be connected to any form of energy storage or generation available on the market. At this moment battery containers and solutions are the go-to solution to store energy and optimize existing powerplants. An increasing number of dredging and offshore operators have started to explore opportunities provided with supercaps and LNG generators. Once new power storage technologies such as hydrogen have been developed, they can be integrated to the ESS in a ‘plug & play’ way. Sustainable shore power from wind energy Another technical solution that can directly contribute to meet the IMO objective is the use of sustainable shore-side electricity from wind energy on land or sea. By connecting to shore power, the vessels can turn off their diesel generators,

significantly reducing noise and the emission of CO2, nitrogen and sulfur dioxide. The complexity of the shore power connection depends on the status of the electrical installation of a vessel. Bakker Sliedrecht recently converted the electrical infrastructure of the crane vessels Sleipnir and Thialf of Heerema in the Calandcanal in Rotterdam. By switching off the diesel generators of these vessels, total emissions will be reduced by the equivalent of the annual emissions of approximately 5,000 diesel cars. Increased safety and cost savings in DP mode As well as reducing ship emissions, safety is also of enormous importance at sea. Offshore vessels often use a DP 2 or 3 system for their maritime operations. These DP 2 3 vessels must remain in position at all times, even in the event of malfunctions, faults in the fuel system or the generators’ voltage regulators. In order to avoid the consequences of faults, the power plant of a DP 2/3 vessel is usually divided into several operating islands.

Due to the spread, all diesel generators run inefficiently, which is undesirable from a cost and environmental point of view. The Common Diesel Protection system of Bakker Sliedrecht protects vessels against blackouts while being allowed to operate with a closed bus. With this protection, vessels are able and allowed to safely operate with less running generators. This reduces fuel consumption, maintenance and emissions. Together towards a sustainable maritime future Offshore and dredging is a critical but complex industry. Maritime operators face enormous logistical challenges, complex regulations and capitalintensive assets. Together, we have the knowledge, resources and ambition to remain at the forefront of innovation. By continuously pushing our boundaries, we can make your operations more efficient, reliable and sustainable. Together, we push the competitive horizon one step further. With the right technologies, designs, regulations and partnerships we create a playing field in which our advanced assets will remain leaders for decades to come.

Jones Act compliant system opens up new possibilities

Ampelmann provides access to energy transition in USA

Electric A-type.

For nearly 15 years, Ampelmann has been building and designing gangway systems towards a more sustainable future. With over 7.6 million workers and 18.6 million kg of cargo transferred to and from offshore structures since its beginnings in 2007, the company has left its mark on the global offshore access world. As one of the pioneers of Walk to Work (W2W), Ampelmann is committed to increasing the safety and efficiency of offshore wind operations by providing energy efficient access solutions.

20

2022

As offshore wind is fast becoming the backbone of the impending energy transition, innovative solutions are required to facilitate the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of a growing number of wind turbines and substations. By compensating for all six degrees of freedom in relation to the structure, Ampelmann’s motion compensated systems enable consistent and reliable access to wind farms, whenever required, regardless of weather or seasonal constraints. By increasing year-round workability, these systems are ideally positioned to accelerate and sustain the growth of the global energy infrastructure in as safe a way as possible. First US contract The growing interest in offshore wind is especially noticeable in the USA. In the last few years, ambitious pilots have been launched on the eastern American coastline. Ampelmann has recently signed its first contract to supply its services on two commercial scale windfarms. Having already transferred hundreds of thousands of crew members and millions of kilogrammes of cargo for the American O&G sector over the last decade, the company is actively seeking out ways to expand its reach into its emerging wind market. Proven solutions As a global company, Ampelmann understands that each case requires specific tailor-made solutions. Throughout its 15-year engagement with the renewable energy sector, it has become adept at assessing and addressing the best ways to improve the efficiency and safety of offshore operations. Proven systems such as the A- and E-type have been modified over the years to meet client needs, and newer systems, such as the Atlas 900 and W-type address specific shortcomings of the renewable offshore access market.

Ampelmann has recently signed its first contract to supply its services on two commercial scale windfarms.

The A-type is the original Ampelmann system. Having serviced over 5.2 million people globally, this motion compensated gangway has become a particularly reliable component of offshore operations. Its latest iteration is fully electric and has an even lower carbon footprint than the original. With the addition of the hoist add-on, the system is capable of lifting tools and spare parts. Its bigger sibling, the E-type, is designed to withstand rougher sea conditions, up to 4.5m Hs, and already sees widespread use in Europe and the Americas. These systems have become leading examples of safe and efficient access solutions. Based on proven E-type technology, the E1000 and the recently commissioned E5000 are similarly larger systems and can turn any platform supply vessel into a W2W vessel. Ideally suited to reach the dizzying heights of modern turbines, their gangways double up as cranes that can transfer one to five tonnes of cargo to and from offshore structures and vessels. As this is well within the range for setting up and replacing generators, these systems are particularly useful for constructionand critical maintenance work. Designing the future More recently, Ampelmann has been working on specialised systems that combine the familiar motion compensation technology with novel designs. The Atlas 900 is specifically designed for the emerging American offshore wind sector. Developed

jointly with Dutch ship designers C-Job, this conceptual system will be fitted on a feeder vessel that can transport all wind turbine parts, including blades and generators, to an installation vessel at the designated construction site. As it is Jones Act compliant, this system opens up new possibilities for continuous construction work on wind farms in the vessel-stricken US market. The W-type is the latest addition to Ampelmann’s line of products. This height adjustable electric system is based on a combination of old and new technology and is set to transform the SOV/CSOV market. As wind turbines come in different sizes and shapes, this system, which can compensate for waves up to 3m Hs, is ideal for servicing multiple turbines during a single run. The gangway is wide enough to enable trolleys, carrying up to 400kg of equipment, to pass through and within seconds can be converted nto a crane with a carrying capacity of 2,000kg. The first model has recently been sold to Olympic Offshore Wind AS and will start its tour of duty in early 2023. By staying on top of local and international developments, Ampelmann has much to offer to the expanding American wind energy sector. Whether through more familiar designs such as the A- and E-type, or more recent ones, such as the E5000, Atlas 900 or the W-type, the energy transition will certainly benefit from the company’s expertise in all matters relating to offshore access.

Frontrunner in the wind industry

Van Oord is enabling global transition towards renewable energy Offshore wind has a large growth potential in renewable energy technology. In line with the increasing global demand for energy it will become an important source of electricity and a key contributor to achieving climate change targets. On a global scale large investments for enabling the roll-out of offshore wind farms are being made. Even though building offshore wind farms is a business that has been around for a few decades, it is not yet a very mature business. The focus is on bringing down the cost price per kilowatt hour. Upscaling plays an important role in this, but also all kinds of new technologies and advanced equipment.

2022 Van Oord, together with Kajima Corporation, has been selected as the preferred Balance of Plant contractor for three projects in Japan.

New orders To further strengthen its market position in offshore wind, Van Oord has ordered a new offshore installation vessel. The new 175-metre jack-up vessel, the largest of its kind, will be purpose-built for the transport and installation of foundations and up to 20 megawatt turbines at sea. Since its initial involvement in wind With a top-class crane, the vessel farm installation in 2002, Van Oord can lift more than 3,000 tonnes. has become a frontrunner in this industry. In the Netherlands, Van Oord The vessel has an advanced was one of the first offshore companies jacking system, with to invest in Offshore Wind. As a result, four giant legs, Van Oord makes a significant contribution to the transition to sustainable energy in Europe. Van Oord also operates outside Europe and is focussing on offshore wind developments in emerging markets such as USA and Asia. Van Oord has recently been awarded a turbine transport and installation project for the Aeolus on the East Coast of the United States for execution in 2023 – the first contract for Van Oord in the United States. In Taiwan Van Oord is executing its first offshore wind project and in February

each measuring 126 metres. This allows the vessel to be jacked up and work in waters up to 70 metres deep. The jack-up vessel operates on methanol and is expected to enter the market in 2024. In December 2020, Van Oord had already ordered a new green cable-laying vessel at VARD in Norway. This vessel is capable of laying two cables at once. Both investments are part of a EUR 1 billion fleet investment programme and in line with Van Oord’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

Deep-sea mining equipment

Seatools delivers pilot polymetallic nodule collection vehicle On behalf of its client Allseas, subsea technology company Seatools recently completed the engineering, manufacturing and qualification of the electronics, instrumentation, and hydraulics for Allseas’ pilot polymetallic nodule collection vehicle. The vehicle will be part of a pilot nodule collection test conducted by Allseas, which is scheduled to take place in 2022 in the Pacific Ocean. Allseas developed and manufactured the core nodule collection technology and surrounding mechanical assembly for the 70+ tons tracked subsea vehicle in-house. Seatools brought the nodule collector alive by the delivery of the entire hydraulic, electronic, and control system. This included the entire development trajectory including design, building, qualification, and testing. Although Seatools could draw upon its experience and toolbox developed through similar kinds of projects from the past, still a significant part of the project concerned the development and qualification of new technological elements.

For instance, in order for Allseas to be able to extensively monitor and control the equipment, process, and environment, Seatools extended its technology base with a new range of sensors. According to Seatools standards, rigorous qualification and factory acceptance testing on both component as well as system level provide a high degree of assurance on the proper functioning of the entire vehicle infrastructure during the upcoming trials. Rutger Bosland, Project Manager Polymetallic Nodule Collection at Allseas: “Completion of the hydraulic, electronic and control system for our subsea nodule collection vehicle is a major milestone in the preparation of our pilot mineral collection operations.

The complexity of the scope and timeline for delivery has challenged Seatools to step up and deliver a high-tech solution capable of excelling at water depths up to 5000 m.” Jan Frumau, Managing Director at Seatools, said: “It makes us feel honored to play a prominent role in this pioneering project. The rigorous engineering approach has resulted in space technology quality levels and we are of the belief that we have equipped Allseas with state-ofthe-art ROV and subsea technology. Seatools’ contribution underpins the value of our multidisciplinary engineering approach, and confirms our strength in high-end, missioncritical subsea equipment for leading offshore contractors such as Allseas.”

chapeau Disruptive technologies – Pushing the boundaries

Changing Energy Landscape

Energy transition and a drive for reduced reliance on imported energy is further accelerating the already rapid development of the offshore wind industry. As the future power source of choice compared to other established fossil fired and nuclear options, offshore wind is being quoted as being cheaper than nuclear power with much easier public acceptance.

The Biden administration have announced plans which would see 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy being in place by 2030, equivalent to the current capacity available across Europe. This plan represents approximately 2,000 offshore wind turbines supplying 10 million homes. Notwithstanding the drive for increasing capacity as quickly as possible, there is

24

2022

a focus on reducing the cost of offshore wind while increasing the quality of the installation. This requires constant innovation as the issues and problems faced by customers are defined. ‘Reduced cost – faster, safer, higher quality operations’ are the key market drivers. In support of this, industry has stepped up to the challenge, presenting

disruptive technologies and processes that enable the work to be done more economically with step changes in performance. This innovation is taking place both in the technology and business models that are being offered to the industry. Changing status quo However, introducing new technology is not an easy process with new

techniques and products requiring rigorous testing and proving programmes prior to first use in a commercial application. Essentially, there is a mismatch between the requirement for technological advancement and the perceived risk profile of the projects which demand proven methods and procedures. The result of which is that new systems only come into play when the cost benefits they offer clearly outweigh their perceived risks. Cable Conundrums – Trenching Offshore wind farms feature multiple short runs of cable connecting wind turbines to each other and then to a substation. The approach of the cables to the turbines and especially to the sub stations requires trenching in tight geometrical constraints. Due to the requirement for relatively tight radius trenching turns on the approach to turbine towers and offshore substations, the trenching vehicle must be very manoeuvrable. However, traditional two track systems experience a number of issues including:

The Hi-Traq incorporates high traction drives ensuring it can climb the subsea slopes and boulders it may encounter while maintaining the product grading within the trench.

• Skid steer reducing forward cutting

Traction capability is strongly governed by the Mean Maximum Pressure (MMP) of the tracks on the seabed. The Hi-Traq employs several techniques to allow a high ground contact and even ground pressure to provide maximum traction in all conditions:

Royal IHC produced a technology demonstrator to show how these challenges could be overcome. Based on the results delivered by the demonstrator, a production variant was developed and constructed. The Hi-Traq (High Traction) Trencher was purpose built to provide high traction capability and manoeuvrability in difficult seabed topographies and high currents which are common in shallow water.

Pivoting tracks - Each of the four tracks is capable of pivoting, allowing them to follow the contours of the terrain with no reduction in forward cutting pressure Active suspension - As with a pipe line plough’s adjustable skids, each of the pivoting tracks is mounted on active suspension arms to maintain a vertically sided, well graded trench even in the event that the vehicle is manoeuvring over boulders or ice scour regions. No Breakover point - Since the vehicle has four pivoting tracks it does not exhibit the phenomenon of a breakover point which is the sudden pitching of the vehicle as the centre of balance moves over the crest of an obstacle.

pressure • Sudden pitching as the trencher centre of balance moves over the crest of a sand-wave or obstacle • Fixed suspension leading to variability in grading of the trench when passing over boulders or ice scour regions

Grading control - Ability to use the loads the product applies to the vehicle to allow smooth product grading within the trench due to changing bottom topography of the seabed. Building track record Even with a comprehensive test and demonstration phase and Royal IHC funding the production of Hi-Traq, the route to market wasn’t quite as planned. Despite positive signals from the offshore wind installers, no-one was willing to accept a vehicle with no operational track record. The story may well have ended there, but thanks to the resilience of all involved in the project and a client who was able to see the potential and disruptive advancement that Hi-Traq could bring to their application, it is now in active operation and performing as expected across multiple trenching markets. A second iteration is now in development which will introduce further step changes in innovation, fully releasing the potential of Hi-Traq to operate across multiple markets and applications.

MARIN chapeauhas gained new insights

Understanding and optimisation of bubble screens in offshore wind sector installations During model tests, MARIN has gained new experiences and insights into the hydrodynamics of bubbles within the Bubbles JIP. Ultimately, the research will lead to improvements in bubble screens deployed offshore.

A consortium of research institutes and industry partners involved in the offshore wind sector started the Bubbles JIP in 2019. The aim of the JIP is to achieve more efficient and effective use of bubble curtains deployed for noise mitigation in offshore installation projects by improved engineering of the bubble screen. Within the JIP, MARIN is involved in the laboratory tests and modelling of the hydrodynamics of the bubble curtain.

26

2022

Improved engineering Bubble screens are currently used to mitigate noise during the installation of offshore wind turbines. The noise generated by high-energy piling of the turbine foundations could potentially harm marine life. Improved engineering of the bubble screen would lead to better control and therefore, risks with respect to specific noise requirements are reduced. To accomplish these goals, laboratory tests are conducted to investigate parameters influencing the noise attenuation by air bubbles.

Figure 2: Hydrodynamic measurement system operating in bubble curtain.

Additionally, the understanding of bubble generation and bubble growth over the water depth under the influence of waves and currents is also addressed. A more efficient use of the bubble curtains will limit the CO2 footprint due to overcapacity of the compressors used to set up the bubble curtains. Hydrodynamics The tests are divided into two separate scopes. The first set of tests was conducted in the Concept Basin

Figure 1: Bubble curtain in the Offshore Basin (photo GROW).

and focused on the bubble generation with different types of delivery hoses and a range of air supply rates. For each of these configurations, the gas fraction and bubble distribution are measured throughout the bubble plume. A new measurement system has been developed to be able to measure the gas fraction, based on conductivity measurement techniques and optical techniques. Combining the optical and conductivity techniques gave a fascinating insight into the hydrodynamics of the bubble screen as a result of a variation of various bubble generation hoses and different mass flow rates. The second scope is performed in the Offshore Basin, to understand the behaviour of the bubble screen in different environmental conditions. No scaling is applied in these tests, since linear scaling would not deal with the laboratory environment and the size of the bubbles, due to water

depth, temperature, salinity and other aspects. Based on previous acoustic tests, the Offshore Basin was suitable to perform acoustic and hydrodynamic tests on a bubble plume with a depth of 10 m in combination with environmental impacts such as currents. The influence of currents and waves is investigated in these tests and the same measurement system is used for these tests in waves and currents in deeper water. A linear bubble curtain over the width of the basin is produced, which is shown in figure 1. The bubble concentration, gas fraction and bubble distribution are investigated over the full depth of the bubble plume. This gives insight into how the bubbles rise and interact on their way up to the surface. Acoustic tests To measure the noise mitigation of these bubble screens in a controlled environment, acoustic measurements are performed as well.

With the assistance of TNO, the noise transfer of bubbles is investigated for all hose parameters, as well as for the influence of waves and currents. The results of the hydrodynamic, acoustic and measurements on air pressures and flow rates will be used in the numerical modelling of bubble curtains. It turned out that the bubble size distribution is different for different types of hoses and also depends on the environmental conditions and hydrostatic pressure. Within this project the expertise of all the partners contributes to the optimisation of bubble screens in offshore wind applications. The Bubbles JIP is supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and TKI Wind op Zee. The partners in the ‘GROW’ consortium are: Boskalis, IHC, Seaway Heavy Lifting, TNO, TU Delft, Van Oord, Heerema Marine Contractors, Wageningen Marine Research and MARIN.

Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) from Damen Shipyards chapeau New modes of fast, reliable and efficient transport for offshore crew and provisions promise to boost operations for offshore energy operations. Vessels that sail at high speed even in the roughest conditions and that are able to provide safe and easy transfers from ship to offshore assets offer improved crew welfare along with increased passenger capacity and a comfortable ride.

Next generation of offshore crew change

The portfolio of Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) from Damen Shipyards offers solutions which are able to sail at speeds of up to 40 knots and cut through waves with heights of up to three meters, typical North Sea conditions on its more windy days. It is the Damen Axe Bow that enables its largest crew supply vessel to date, the FCS 7011, to power up the waterjets to reach its impressive speed in such waves.

28

2022

Likewise, the twin axe bow design of the FCS 2710 ensures seaworthiness at speed in rough conditions. Both vessels are purpose-designed to offer very comfortable crew transport along with impressively modest fuel consumption and low emissions. Proof of concept At the end of March 2022, the all new FCS 7011 Aqua Helix completed the first actual transfer of crew to an

offshore substation in the North Sea. The final testing to demonstrate the proof-of-concept of the 120-passenger vessel followed extensive sea trials and testing of the onboard Ampelmann stabilized gangway. The fast monohull FCS 7011 (with a length overall of 73.6 meters and beam of 11.2 meters) is built in aluminium. The weight reduction achieved by choosing this lightweight material makes it possible to sail at such high speeds.

The axe bow greatly reduces slamming end pitching while the biggest gyrostabilizer in the world reduces rolling at zero speed down to 10 per cent of the motion that would otherwise occur without stabilization. Once the FCS 7011 is positioned alongside a platform or installation at sea to transfer its offshore workers, the Ampelmann gangway can swing out to a maximum of 180 degrees. This allows the vessel to optimally position itself with regard to the incoming wind and waves. The gangway can then extend to a length of 26 meters. Gyroscope-fed computer technology enables the S-type stabilized gangway to be completely motionless relative to the platform balcony, so the offshore workers can transfer easily and safely in harsh and remote offshore locations. Major offshore energy players like Shell and Exxon provided valuable input that inspired Damen engineers to develop the vessel. Damen Shipyards and Ampelmann joined forces to operate this game changer in offshore crew transport in-house. The passenger capacity of 120 persons is bigger than the typical crew change at North Sea platforms and, thanks to its speed and capacity, Aqua Helix can deliver and retrieve personnel from multiple platforms in

a single trip and still offer competitive transfer times and enhanced comfort compared to helicopters. Other areas that require larger numbers of crew to be delivered in a single transfer, for which the FCS 7011 is ideally suited, include offshore West Africa, Australia, Guyana, Brazil and the Gulf of Mexico, where offshore platforms are often further out to sea. Hybrid The twin axe bow FCS 2710, is another vessel that has met with an enthusiastic reception from the offshore industry. It is a catamaran design that offers capabilities that fit with the demands of offshore supply but at a smaller scale and is especially popular in the offshore wind sector. As with the FCS 7011, the axe bow design enables fast sailing on rough seas and the catamaran format offers excellent stability. As part of their commitment towards sustainability, and in line with the objectives of the global offshore wind sector, Damen Shipyards have developed alongside their fuel efficient diesel powered FCS 2710, the FCS 2710 Hybrid. 26.8 meters long and10.5 metres across, the vessel can take up to 26 passengers, has 90 square meters of deck area for assorted cargo and can reach speeds of up to 25 knots. A 232 kWh battery pack allows sailing with zero emissions in

port and within offshore wind farms. The generators and main engines are fuel efficient even without electrical support and all comply with IMO tier III emission standards. With a fleet of FCS 2710s already in operation, Damen Shipyards has started c onstruction of three more of the hybrid vessels at the Damen Antalya yard to be built for stock. The shipbuilder is convinced that these vessels offer such superior capabilities for offshore operators that they will be quickly sold. For clients, buying their vessels from stock means extremely short delivery times. Customisation involving the addition of cranes, additional battery packs and other deck equipment to meet specific needs can also be done prior to delivery. Change Damen Shipyards Group has set out to revolutionize the offshore crew change market with their fleet of fast vessels offering genuine alternatives to the current helicopter business model. Improvements in safety, costs and fuel efficiency are the pillars that support Damen together with its partners in their drive to change this market. More than any other, the flagship FCS 7011 demonstrates the potential that these vessels have to transform the entire offshore energy market.

chapeau VDL Klima: specialist in supplying cooling systems

Air cooled and dehumidified by POD Cooler VDL Klima develops and manufactures heat exchangers, coolers and ventilation systems for various industries, such as the maritime industry, on & offshore wind and the oil and gas industry. One example of a product for the maritime industry is the POD Cooler.

Ships, they come in all shapes and sizes. One ship is used to transport goods, while another serves as a luxury cruise vessel. But what remains the same for all ships is that they are powered by an engine with propeller. This is one of the points where VDL Klima is asked for its expertise. It is crucial that this engine, whether fuel or electric, does not overheat. Podded propulsion system The VDL Klima POD Cooler is an integral part of the podded propulsion system. The podded propulsion system, also known as the POD drive, is a marine propulsion system. The system consists of an electric motor that is placed in a nacelle which drives the ship’s propeller. The electric motor is subsequently cooled by the VDL Klima POD Cooler. The nacelles mounted on a steerable shaft that is placed completely outside the ship’s hull, below the water surface. The POD drive is special because of its mobility. The application can rotate completely (360 degrees) and thus generate thrust in all directions, something that is not possible with a conventional system. VDL Klima designs, produces and exports these coolers for a number of major customers. For example, the cruise vessel ‘Oasis of the Seas’, one of the largest cruise vessels in the world, is powered by three Azipods (trademark of ABB) equipped with VDL Klima POD Coolers. Also more and more (ice-going) LNG tankers are being equipped with podded propulsion systems. VDL Klima is specialist in supplying the cooling systems, due to its unique design and many years of experience in this field. Unique features Before production actually starts, it is important that the capacity of the cooler is calculated. This involves questions such as ‘What kind of ship is it’, ‘Where is the ship sailing’ and ‘What is the capacity that needs to be cooled’. The dimensions of the cooler are also important, because it has to

30

2022

fit within the design of the ship. Technical specialists from the sales department, engineering department and the VDL Klima R&D team consult with the customer regarding the criteria the cooler needs to meet. Once everything has been agreed, the final production can begin. The POD Cooler is made entirely in-house. This means that late changes to the design can easily be incorporated into the final product, while retaining the flexibility, agreed price and delivery time. As every POD Cooler is unique, the test phase is very important and this is also done in-house. The lead time for the entire project is around 14 weeks. How does it work? Every electric motor generates heat.

For an optimal performance of the POD drive, this heat must securely be dissipated. The heated air is extracted from the electromotor by a radial fan and circulates from the nacelle through the casing/shaft of the POD drive. This air is cooled and dehumidified using VDL Klima’s POD Cooler. This is done by means of a KDL (heat exchanger) designed by VDL Klima, especially for the application. With the help of the fan, the heated air is led along a system of tubes and fins. Cold water, originating from the sea, flows through the tube system cooling the heated air that flows through the fins of the heat exchanger. This cooled air will in turn return to the electric motor. This cooling system is a so-called closed system:

the cooling air is continuously ‘recycled’ to exclude external influences such as fluctuations in ambient temperature, humidity and pollution. Related services VDL Klima currently supplies its products mostly to OEMs or a shipyard that build the ship on behalf of a shipping company. Yet VDL Klima is increasingly involved earlier in the engineering process, also with the shipping companies and the engineering agencies in order to ultimately gain more insight into the customer’s total requirements. As a result, these needs can be anticipated in the design phase of the cooler, what in return will support the customer in the optimum design of his ship.

chapeau Vibro Lifting Technology Offshore

CAPE Holland: redefining the future of (XXL) monopile installation An incredible amount of development, engineering and manufacturing has taken place in the past years at CAPE Holland and their trusted suppliers to build the next level CAPE Vibro Lifting Tool (CAPE VLT). It is ready for the XXL monopiles the Offshore Wind industry will see in the years to come.

Building on the large track record that has been built up with the CAPE VLT-320 range, which was first deployed in 2015, the CAPE VLT-640 range has been developed over the last 2 years. With the complete unit finished in September 2021, the CAPE VLT-640 has numerous new features in order to operate very large vibro lifting tools and a lot of work has gone into streamlining the design of the hydraulic connections, further reducing the risk of failures during the project. With an enormous power of 640 kgm per unit, the CAPE VLT-640 gearbox is by far the largest single gearbox vibro hammer in the world. Then combining 3 units together to form the CAPE VLT-640 Triple, this monster machine is ready for piles weighing more than 1,000t. Developments are already underway to increase the maximum line pull per 640 unit to 1,000t, allowing a CAPE CAPE VLT-640 Triple to upend, lift and drive piles to well over 2,000t. It’s bigger brother, the CAPE VLT-640 Quad will then be ready for the largest XXL monopiles weighing up to 3,000t and which are planned for the longer term future for Wind Turbine Generators going towards the 20MW. The control system has also been improved and is now including a highly sophisticated installation monitoring system. In order to be able to power the large CAPE VLT’s without taking up a lot more deck space, CAPE Holland has further developed the power units that can now also be stacked. As before, the CAPE Power Units are dual prepared which means they can drive both the CAPE VLT and impact hammer

32

2022

on the same job to save on deck space and rental of double set of power units. The CAPE Holland operators can also operate both the CAPE VLT’s as the impact hammers, so a further saving on personnel helps to keep the costs down. The newly developed Hose Reels can also be stacked and house the smartly bundled hoses in neat umbilical’s for a tidier hose handling. Vibro technology With vibro driving, the pile is not forced into the soil by high energy blows, but actually sinks into the soil by gravity due to the temporary reduced soil resistance around the pile caused by the vertical vibrations. This means that the pile deforms less and therefore generates substantial less noise than impact driving. Once the vibro is turned off, the soil is regaining most of its strength immediately. The rest of the setup of the soil will be regained over time.

In order to be able to vibrate the pile in a vertical motion, it is paramount that the vibro tool has a fixed connection to the pile. This is normally achieved by hydraulic clamps. This fixed connection brings a number of added advantages to this installation method, like the ability to extract piles, prevent pile run, controlled installation without requiring a gripper system or piling frame. Noise mitigation After entering the offshore market with vibro hammers back in 2007, CAPE Holland developed a multiple vibro for the first ever monopile for a wind turbine generator in 2012. Offshore Germany, the monopiles for the Riffgat Offshore Wind Farm were driven to a stable depth, without noise mitigation before they were driven to their final depth with an impact hammer. The success of driving the 30 monopiles to the desired depth, in about 20 minutes net driving time, on average per pile, convinced the CAPE management that there was a gap in the market for a fast way of driving piles, with very little noise impact. Combined features The management realised, however, that the large onshore vibro hammers were not ideal for offshore use and in 2014 they took the plunge and developed a dedicated vibro hammer for the offshore market. It incorporated an upending facility and was designed and built as a lifting tool, certified for lifting offshore. Due to the combination of the lifting tool and vibro driver, the CAPE Vibro Lifting Tool or CAPE VLT in short, was born. Massive benefits Having showed its great potential with the CAPE VLT-320 during the pre-piling of jacket piles for a gas platform, CAPE Holland built the first multiple linked CAPE VLT in 2016.

This was for the installation of a monopile for the foundation of an unmanned gas platform in the Dutch part of the North Sea. By using the CAPE VLT the pile could be installed, without any form of support frame during driving. More and more offshore contractors saw the massive benefits of the CAPE VLT, fuelling the demand for a smaller version, which led to the development of the CAPE VLT-80 with a range from 20 to 30 inch with the internal clamp IC-60. This compact unit, which has been flown out to a few projects around the globe already, is mostly used for the installation of pin piles for seabed structures and anchor piles for mooring systems. This has a great potential for anchor piles for floating wind projects. It has been used successfully in the Caspian Sea to water depths of 170m installing tether piles to final penetration, saving an enormous amount of installation time driving the piles free hanging, as a seabed frame nor tool changes were required, as the full installation from picking up the stored piles, to driving them to final penetration before picking up the next pile happened with the same tool. The whole installation campaign, took less than half the time it would have taken with the traditional installation method. Most powerful In April 2020 CAPE Holland was awarded a contract by Seaway 7 to supply a CAPE VLT-640 Triple with a total capacity of 1,920 kgm. This version has multiple vibro hammers linked together, making it the most powerful vibro lifting tool in the world. In January 2022, the CAPE VLT was successfully load tested to complete the lifting appliance certification process under Lloyd’s Register Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment (CLAME).

Plug, first company to believe in hydrogen revolution

Reaching Net Zero with Green Hydrogen If you’ve read the news today, you were likely reminded of the dire need for companies to transition to renewable energy. The news is stark - emphasizing the consequences if we stay on the same path of fossil fuels and oils. But the good news is there is hope as key players are choosing to make an investment in green hydrogen, the only form of hydrogen that doesn’t emit carbon.

As the first company to believe in the Hydrogen Revolution, Plug has been powering both large and small companies around the world for 25 years. With a commitment to developing effective, economical, and reliable products, Plug has built an end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem that covers all the steps of operations, including producing, storing, dispensing, and delivering green hydrogen to customers.

34

2022

When it comes to helping the world reach net-zero, Plug takes the responsibility personally, and it is attacking the problem at all angles. End-to-end “At Plug, we dream big, and we plan to be a big winner, as our customers in the world turn to green hydrogen to reduce 20% of the world’s global carbon footprint,” Andy Marsh, CEO of

Plug, said. “Plug is a company that can provide products and services for the entire green hydrogen ecosystem. This is unique. We can generate hydrogen, like at our plant in Tennessee. We can distribute hydrogen, using our own liquid and gaseous hydrogen trailers. We can operate fueling stations, like at Walmart and Amazon, and can serve a multitude of fuel cell applications in this growing hydrogen space.”

Experts agree green hydrogen is the key to safely powering at least 20% of our world.

With its customers in mind, Plug built an end-to-end ecosystem with more than 100 solutions, 50,000 fuel cell systems, and more than 165 fueling stations for a range of customer applications. Plug’s customers can expect the green hydrogen production plants to produce at least 70 tons of liquid green hydrogen daily by the end of 2022 and 500 tons daily by 2025. However, this is just the beginning of the transition to green hydrogen.

100 MW electrolyzer Fertiglobe, the strategic partnership between OCI N.V. and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company - recently selected Plug to provide 100 megawatts of electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen as a feedstock for up to 90,000 tons of green ammonia production at EBIC in Ain Sokhna, Egypt. Green ammonia, produced from renewable energy such as solar and wind instead of natural gas, is a versatile product that is an ideal carrier fuel to store and transport hydrogen, and can help decarbonize numerous sectors which represent around 80% of current global greenhouse gas emissions.

Delivering electrolyzers With nearly five decades of experience, Plug has developed electrolyzers that have very high current densities, high-pressure output, and seamless load following capabilities. Plug’s electrolyzers will be supplied to customers in Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Brazil, and India, among others. These electrolyzers will support a range of applications, including natural gas pipeline injection, excess renewable energy storage, FCEV fueling, green ammonia and e-methanol production, and decarbonization of refinery operations.

1MW Offshore Electrolyzer Plug’s hydrogen electrolyzer technology will provide 1MW of capacity to the world’s first offshore hydrogen production facility developed by Lhyfe and powered by electricity from a floating wind turbine off the coast of Le Croisic, at SEM-REV, Centrale Nantes’ offshore test site, which will be operational by 2022. Plug and Lhyfe will also pursue other opportunities to develop green hydrogen in Europe.

In offshore wind, it is involved in many major projects all over the world, in a wide range of scopes. It has transported and loaded-out massive foundations for many pilot and now commercial floating wind farms. On land, its PTC and SK cranes – the world’s biggest – are now helping to integrate and load-out giant jacket foundations.

It has engineered some of the largest movements in offshore energy. These include lifting the world-record 42,780t Exxon Neftegaz Arkutun Dagi topside, raising the Shell Malikai topside over 40m high and loading-in both decommissioned Brent Alpha and Bravo structures.

Its upcoming SK6000 crane will allow both FPSO and wind installations to be built more efficiently than ever before, enabling both markets to enjoy significant cost-efficiency benefits.
