Sacha Lakic, master of motion “ONE SHOULD ALWAYS BE A LITTLE IMPROBABLE” – OSCAR WILDE

Born in Belgrade, Sacha Lakic moved to Paris at a very young age, and it wasn’t long before he was drawing his first sketches. While his friends were dreaming ofriding mopeds, Lakic, pencil in hand, was sketching the motorcycles and cars of the future.

The encounter with Roche Bobois has led him to designing the Onda bed in 1996. What started as a first try, turned out to be the first class, and the magic carpet-esque Onda was awarded the Casa Idea Prize in Rome.

Lakic formed an instant understanding with the Roche-Bobois teams and the development meetings were productive and dynamic. These gatherings gave rise to major collections, such as 2005’s Speed Up and 2007’s Dyna, as well as best-sellers including the Synopsis sofa, the Speed Up sideboard, the Scenario sofa and more recently the Bubble sofa designed in 2014 and that received a gold award in June 2015.

Sacha Lakic is one of very few designers who possess liquid creativity, switching with ease from commercial products to architecture or from photography to fashion.

What truly sets Lakic apart is the incredible feeling of movement that flows through his creations, imbuing them with life, form and soul.

His creations transcend time and are destined to become future classics.

Саша Лакич Саша Лакич родился в Белграде. В очень раннем возрасте он перебрался в Париж. Совсем скоро появились его первые эскизы. В то время как его друзья мечтали сесть на мопеды, Саша, вооружившись карандашом, рисовал мотоциклы и автомобили будущего. Встреча с Roche Bobois подтолкнула его к разработке в 1996 году кровати Onda. Первая попытка сотрудничества обернулась созданием первоклассного предмета интерьера. Hoteles Santos is finalising the exterior and interior details of the Gran Hotel Miramar Resort & Spa, Malaga’s first five-star Grand Luxury hotel, which will also be opening its doors as a member of the select group which is The Leading Hotels of the World.

Classical Room. Inspired by grand ballrooms and by the classicism which is an obvious part of the building’s general appearance, the aim of these rooms is to take guests back to a time before it was built. Aneta Mijatovic has decorated part of the rooms, which are adorned with classical ivory colour mouldings and palatial colour schemes for the furnishings, combined with high-quality wood.

quoise or coral colours, give the rooms a maritime feel, contrasting with white. Pieces of coral, shells, sea urchins and starfish cover surfaces to provide the room with the final stylish touches.

Arabian Room. The building’s central patio has two large arches in the Nasrid style, which can also be seen in the tiled skirting board which surrounds the perimeter. These elements inspired the decoration for these rooms, which have a definite Nasrid feel about them, with white being the predominant colour for the textures which can be seen both in the rooms designed by Aneta Mijatovic and those by Rosa Escribano.

Botanical Room. These are the rooms on the ground floor, which have their own gardens and are the work of Mijatovic. The main idea is to recreate the colours and textures of plants which are autochthonous to the area, mainly palm trees, magnolias, begonias, bamboo, etc. This way, guests can perceive an indoor extension of the spectacular 9,000m2 gardens which surround the building.

Cеть Hoteles Santos завершила доработку внешних и внутренних деталей Gran Hotel Miramar Resort & Spa, первого роскошного пятизвездочного отеля Малаги, который откроет свои двери, в качестве члена избранной группы “Ведущие отели мира”.

Средиземноморский номер. Комната в этом стиле, работы Миятович, рождается из расположения Grand Hotel Miramar в городе у моря. Элементы, навеянные Средиземноморьем - бирюзовый и коралловый цвет - контрастируют с белым цветом и создают в спальнях ощущение близости моря. Довершают стиль комнаты украшающие разные поверхности кораллы, ракушки, морские ежи и морские звезды.

Гости Grand Hotel Miramar проникнутся ощущением роскоши и исключительности, раскрывающимися со всей очевидностью в его архитектуре. Это здание – работа по проекту Фернандо Герреро Страчана – часть великого архитектурного наследия начала 20-х годов.

Арабский номер. Центральный внутренний двор здания располагает двумя большими арками в мавританском стиле, которые также проглядываются в облицованном плиткой цоколе, окружающем здание по всему периметру. Эти элементы легли в основу оформления номеров в мавританском духе. Анета Миятович и Роза Эскрибано при декорировании использовали материалы, в которых превалирует белый цвет.

Классический номер. Стиль комнат вдохновлен просторными танцевальными залами и эпохой классицизма, которая отражается в общей эстетике здания. Все возвращает посетителя к прошлым временам. Некоторые из этих комнат декорировала Анета Миятович. Здесь преобладает классическая лепнина цвета слоновой кости, а в мебели сочетание дворцовой цветовой гаммы с деревом высокого качества.

Ботанический номер. Речь идет о номерах работы Миятович на нулевом этаже с выходом в свой сад. Основная идея: воссоздание цвета и текстуры местных растений, среди которых преобладают пальмы, магнолии, бегонии, бамбуки и т.д. Гость воспринимает этот интерьер, как продолжение 9000 кв. метров потрясающих садов, окружающих здание.

alling well within its remit on October 15th, the sparkling glitterati was truly set ablaze to honour the winners of the highest and most exclusive award in the hospitality sector.

A NOTEWORTHY OCCASION The occasion? The 4th annual Seven Stars Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle Awards, and the most exclusive award; the Signum Virtutis, the seal of excellence.

Cue diamonds and designer gowns, as a stellar line-up - including Royals - attended this elite showcase, honouring the outstanding professionals in the hospitality industry. TV and media joined an unrivalled list of attendees at the Villa Padierna Palace Hotel to observe the extravaganza.

AND THE WINNER IS… Winners included Oman Air, Villa Alegria in Mykonos, Sovereign Seas Hermes, and many more, who were presented with their awards in the Amphitheatre, following a fabulous cocktail reception. The famous Sol Kerzner, Seven Stars Woman of the Year, Ms Regine Sixt and the Seven Star CEO of the Year, Valentine Ozigbo, also received Special Lifetime achievement Awards. AN INSIDER VIEW As CEO & Co-Founder Seven Stars Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle Awards, Nicola is no stranger to piloting and coordinating such an extravaganza. She agreed to take time from her hectic schedule and answer some questions about the award, and why it’s a particularly noteworthy one.

Explain to us what the Seven Stars Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle Awards are?

Seven Stars Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle Awards is the highest most exclusive award for the Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle industry. We are not a travel award; in fact, we never mention the word travel anywhere. We are designed to identify and to separate the exceptional from amongst the very best. SSLHLA is an award that allows winners to truly receive maximum benefit as well as exclusivity.

How do the SSLHLA differ from other lifestyle awards, what makes them so special, and such coveted and treasured awards?

There are numerous things that set SSLHLA apart from the rest. Nor-

mally, awards for the hospitality industry are filled with flawed business plans whereby there are charges for being a nominee, mandatory marketing packages to ”gain more votes” and fees to attend the gala ceremony and collect the award.

We have erased all the above.

SSLHLA does not charge for nominations, we do not charge to attend the event and be presented with the winners plaque, there are no mandatory marketing packages or administration fees whatsoever.

In addition, we have created the most transparent voting system out of all awards. We allow the nominees to log in to the back end of our website and view, on a personalized dashboard, exactly where the votes come in from, when they come in, total amount of votes, and we also allow them to view their daily ranking throughout the entire voting period.

Nicola, what have been the biggest obstacles for you to overcome during your 4 years of organising this prestigious award ceremony?

Villa Padierna is an exceptional Venue. We did not have any substantial obstacles at all, as we are a brand that is attractive to the topmost people within the industry, everything falls in place very quickly and we always work with very good teams at each hosting property.

Other than that memorable evening, which we realise is probably the most noteworthy date in the hospitality calendar - and yours! Share with us what other activities are you involved in organising with the SSLHLA? SSLHLA is launching two new products.

The first is SV Hotels & Resorts which is a collection of the world’s most amazing hotels and resorts. Each member hotel must be a winner of the SIGNUM VIRTUTIS, the seal of excellence form the SSLHLA. This way we know the standard is at the highest level. The difference is that SV Hotels & Resorts will focus on promoting its member brands rather than itself.

We are also launching SV Collection,this is a yearly Bookazine which will have worldwide distribution in all the suites of the absolute best properties, first class lounges, private members clubs etc and is designed to

How can a business be nominated for an award in 2017?

Nominations are done by the luxury panel members.

HOTEL MALAGA PORT 5* GRAND LUXURY (MALAGA PORT SKYSCRAPER) The project for the Hotel Suites Malaga Port awarded in Public Tender, convened by Malaga’s Port Authority, which is 135 metres tall and has 35 floors, with a commercial area, casino, auditoriums and 350 rooms. (2020)

Trained at the Madrid School of Advanced Architecture, in 1975 he founded and directed the SEGUI STUDIO with its main offices in Malaga and Madrid and delegations in South America.

Jose Segui has been chosen for projects such as the refurbishment of the Miramar Palace, and its conversion into a hotel, the extension of Marbella’s La Bajadilla Port, the integration of the Guadalmedina into the city landscape and others. He has also been behind Malaga’s City of Justice, the Bus Station, La Rosaleda Football Stadium, etc. His most recent project is the skyscraper hotel in Malaga Port.

Mr Segui, before anything, I would like to congratulate you on your trajectory. You have said that you felt you were returning a piece of history to Malaga with the refurbishment of the Gran Hotel Miramar.

I have always said that the Miramar Hotel is more than just a hotel. It is a magnificent historical building from the early20th century created by architect Fernando Guerrero Strachan, which after a long journey has returned to its original use as a hotel. The Junta de Andalucia put the project out for public tender and awarded it to chain Hoteles Santos. The

aim was to return it to its former architectural quality and make it once again into the city hotel that witnessed all the major events of the 20th century and which can now become the best hotel reference for the city and the Costa del Sol. How do you see Malaga’s current tourism development?

Malaga city is currently undergoing a major development of its urban and tourism scene. The offer of museums which the city now has with the Picasso, Thyssen and Russian museums... and the upcoming opening of the Customs Museum with paintings from the Prado Museum, which give the city a special cultural attraction. On top of that we have the renovation of Malaga Port with its current commercial and leisure offer, which is also boosting cruise ship tourism in Malaga, and new, top quality railway infrastructures (the AVE high speed train), as well as the improved airport and roads, which have made the city into a main point of reference for national and international tourism, giving it back its status as the centre of the Costa del Sol territory.

Frechilla and J.M. Lopez Pelaez (2007).

You have been called the ‘hotel architect’, the ‘city doctor’ and the ‘carpenter architect, how do you see yourself?

These are expressions which coincide with the different professional activities I have carried out. I started in the profession carrying out designs for furniture and household objects, later there was a phase for architecture and city territorial planning, and now we are developing several proposals for hotels. Carrying out such diverse projects and phases is precisely what has defined me in my work as an architect.

What stage is the project for Marbella Port at?

Marbella Town Council is currently overseeing the launch process, due to the huge importance which the port will have on the development of Marbella city. Remember that it is the most important project for a Mediterranean Tourism Port, and I am sure that it will be an important boost for tourism, not only for Marbella, but for the whole of the Costa del Sol.

Which projects do you recollect most fondly?

All projects are fondly remembered because they are part of a certain professional moment, and they respond to the need to solve problems at different urban or territorial levels. I had the opportunity to study the Alhambra or to come up with the urban planning of cities such as Malaga, Cordoba. Granada... I have carried out projects which I was lucky enough to be awarded in Public Tender, such as Malaga’s City of Justice, and other similar phases, are all professional challenges which I have carried out with love and excitement, although for me the latest project is always the most exciting.

What is the key to making your projects into winning proposal?

I would say that perseverance in the ongoing search for innovation. And I say that because we mustn’t forget that to win some awards we have to lose often, from which we learn for the next time, and that innovation is almost always the most important aspect to have a change at winning.

Сегодня он сможет стать главным гостиничным комплексом города и побережья. Как бы вы охарактеризовали сегодняшний этап развития туризма в Малаге? Малага переживает сейчас период бурного обновления и подъема в развитии туризма. Музеи Малаги придают городу особую культурную привлекательность и создают неповторимую атмосферу, связанную с появлением музея Пикассо, филиалов Тиссена-Борнемисы, Русского музея и предстоящим открытием музея Таможни, где будут собраны живописные полотна из фондов Прадо. Добавим сюда реконструкцию порта с его различными магазинами и зонами отдыха, круизный туризм, который набирает все большую популярность в Малаге, в также новую инфраструктуру: железные дороги (AVE), аэропорт и автотрассы. Все обновления сделали город привлекательным для национального и международного туризма и возвращают его центральную роль на всей Коста-дель-Соль.

Вас называют и архитектором гостиниц, и доктором городов, и архитектором-плотником. А как Вы сами себя называете? Эти названия отражают ту профессиональную деятельность, которой я занимаюсь. Свой профессиональный путь я начинал с дизайна мебели и предметов быта, потом был период архитектурных проектов и планов градостроительства, а в настоящее время мы разрабатываем различные предложения для отелей. Именно осуществление проектов разного масштаба и уровня характерна для нас в архитектурной деятельности. А на каком этапе сейчас находится проект порта в Марбелье? В настоящее время процессом запуска этого проекта ведает мэрия Марбельи, поскольку в жизни порта это событие приобретает огромную важность и серьезно отразится на дальнейшем развитии города. Поймите, речь идет о самом значимом проекте для средиземноморского туристического порта. Я уверен, что это станет одним из основных импульсов для развития туризма не только в Марбелье, но и на всем побережье Коста-дель-Соль.

О каком проекте вы вспоминаете с особой нежностью? Мне дороги все мои проекты. Все они возникали на определенном профессиональном этапе, отвечали поставленным задачам и решали городские и региональные вопросы разной сложности. Нам представилась возможность заниматься Альгамброй, поднимать вопросы градостроительства Малаги, Кордовы, Гранады, а также осуществлять проекты, победившие на конкурсах, например: центр Ciudad de la Justicia в Малаге и другие подобного масштаба. Все они осуществлялись нами с большой самоотдачей и энтузиазмом, но для меня последний проект всегда становится самым захватывающим. Почему ваши проекты побеждают? Возможно, этому способствует настойчивость в непрерывном стремлении к инновациям. Чтобы добиться успеха, надо пройти не через одно поражение. Об этом не надо забывать. Из этих неудач мы извлекаем уроки и получаем опыт, необходимый для участия в следующих конкурсах. Кроме этого, инновации, как правило, всегда основной фактор, дающий шанс на победу.

The divine perfection of the Ogee

Most architectural sources list the first appearance of classic ‘ogee arches’ in Europe as being in the early part of the 14th century. The shape is considered to be Moorish in origin, which isn’t particularly surprising, considering the influence of Islamic culture over large swathes of southern Europe during this point in history.

In the 18th century the ogee was recognised by the English artist William Hogarth, who described it as “the line of beauty”. The fascination that this shape engenders goes some way to explaining why the ogee appears so often in many different forms of architecture.

It is almost as if designers are powerless to resist its form, and are drawn by an attraction that even they don’t fully understand.

So what is an ogee? Sometimes known as a Venetian arch or cyma reversa, the ogee is essentially a moulding created from two curves: the upper curve is concave and the lower is convex. More widely associated with the Venetian Gothic style yet enormously popular throughout the rest of Europe, where examples can be seen on many famous building including the Segovia Cathedral and the Palau de Generalitat in Barcelona. In general it seems to have been used as architectural decoration, rather than an integral part of the structural support.

There is no doubt that the ogee arch has pleased the eye throughout the centuries, and Ogee spotting can be an oddly satisfying hobby. You don’t have to be an expert to find excellent examples on historical buildings, on ‘blind’ archways, windows, on tombs and on screens behind the altar in churches.

Interview with Gilles Bonan President of the Roche Bobois Group

Roche Bobois has promoted ‘Encounters with Spanish Fashion’ a charity drive which reflects the talent and creativity of 10 famous Spanish fashion designers, projected upon the Mah Jong sofa.

The 10 exclusive sofas have been auctioned and all of the money raised will be donated to NGO Oafrica.

Fashion is united with decoration Bringing the worlds of fashion and design together is part of the mission of Roche Bobois, it is key to us, it’s what makes us different and what we aim to get across is the French ‘art de vivre’ and fashion. This is what our clients in the 55 countries in which we are present are looking for.

For years Roche Bobois has invested in artistic and cultural movements to reflect the talent and creativity of designers, and this time you have brought together fashion and design, how did the project arise?

They are two very closely linked worlds, and it is a matter of sensitivity, emotions, colours… I think they have many aspects in common. In the year 2000 we began to work with Jean Paul Gautier and now we are launching a collection with Christian Lacroix Maison.

What was the challenge for the sofa?

The challenge is to continue to exist for another 50 years. It was designed in 1971 and is Roche Bobois’ number one seller. Now it has been given a new lease of life with this initiative.

Your upcoming projects?

To continue opening stores around the world, we are currently opening one each month.

HABITAT THE IT DESIGN OF TOMORROW

More than 1,300 participants submitted their creations following the call for projects launched

by Habitat in partnership with MyMajorCompany.

Thanks to the competition, Habitat is launching three young designers and has given them the chance to have their it-Design produced.

PIERRE FAVRESSE, HEAD OF THE HABITAT DESIGN STUDIO “At the Habitat Design Studio, we want to take new ways of life into account. This call for projects also presented an incredible opportunity for Habitat to encourage new talents and, above all, new visions, different visions.”

THE IBN VASES, DESIGNED BY ABDELKARIM ANTAR Inspired by the Arab ingenious irrigation system, IBN is a set of three separate and complementary vases.

The thousand year old irrigation system - “Ibn” means “son of” in Arabic – allows us to reflect on the notion of inheritance. With their clean design, the vases are made of porcelain: the new material modernizes the traditional old method of transferring a trickle of water from one vessel to another in order to naturally irrigate the three components. The water flowing is like a vital bond that links memory to culture, parents to their offspring and society to its history. The muted and soothing sound of water wanders from one vase to another; like a musical poem acknowledging the passing of time.

THE FUNKY LAMP, DESIGNED BY THIBAULT POUGEOISE A fun lamp for your desk.

This lamp comes with a base (base + light diffuser) and a silicone hat in four shapes and different colours, that will let you create a collection of unique and original lamps.

THE LIBERTAD SOFA, DESIGNED BY JULIE FIGUEROA ZAFIRO The Libertad sofa is designed to meet the different postures that you naturally adopt when seating on a sofa. The sofa looks like a flower: the back unfolds and takes the shape of your seat. By a set of variable volumes, it travels across the floor to take on a crosslegged position and then extends over the seat so you can lie or sit down. “Libertad is a new type of sofa: it’s an invitation to be lazy and to take time to relax.”

Благодаря этому конкурсу Habitat выбрала трех молодых дизайнеров и предоставила им возможность осуществить свои веб-проекты. ПЬЕР ФАБРЕС, РУКОВОДИТЕЛЬ СТУДИИ ДИЗАЙНА HABITAT “Наша дизайнерская студия Habitat хочет быть в курсе нового образа жизни. К тому же этот конкурс дает невероятную возможность для Habitat поддержать молодые таланты и, прежде всего, новые идеи, разные концепции”. ВАЗОНЫ IBN СПРОЕКТИРОВАНЫ АБДЕЛЬКАРИМОМ АНТАРОМ Набор из трех отдельных и дополняющих друг друга вазонов IBN основан на арабской гениальной системе орошения. Тысячелетняя древняя система орошения - “Ибн” (арабск.”сын”) позволяет нам задуматься о понятии наследия. Вазы обтекаемой формы сделаны из фарфора. Новый материал модернизирует традиционный старинный способ последовательного и естественного перетекания струй воды из одного сосуда в другой. Вода течет, словно жизненно важная сила, связывающая

память с культурой, родителей со своими детьми и общество со своей историей. Тихий и спокойный шум воды перемещается из одной чаши в другую, словно музыка, воспевающая течение времени. The closing ceremony of ‘Encounters with Spanish Fashion’ which was held on November 3 at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, brought together many VIPs as well as the designers of the exclusive Mah Jongs which were to be auctioned to benefit NGO Oafrica.

Gilles Bonan, CEO of Roche Bobois International and Martin Gleize, the International Manager, were also present.

Actress Rossy de Palma, who is the NGO’s godmother in Spain, took charge of encouraging bids and raised almost €10,000.
