he inspiration for this intriguing design came from Maximillian Büsser (founder of MB & F) who was captivated by ‘Maman’ a giant bronze, stainless steel and marble spider sculpture created by artist Louise Bourgeois, which has been exhibited all around the world. Büsser called upon world class clock maker L’Epée to work together to produce this unique arachnid based timepiece. This was achieved by re-imagining the clock with a mechanical head and highly polished black dome as the spider’s body, which would incorporate L’Epée’ famed eight-day movements. Time is depicted using MB & F’s signature numerals across the spiders back and the finely tuned movement is completely visible showing the minutes and hours ticking by. All of the 218 components have been finished at the L’Epée’s Swiss atelier and an Incabloc shock protection system - usually only seen in wristwatches - has been integrated to minimise the risk of damage whilst being transported. Yet it isn’t only the body that seems alive. At either end of the abdomen there are important mechanic features; in the head there is an oscillating balance wheel and unbelievably a set of jaws. Movement is powered by a mainspring barrel, including 8 articulated legs that can rotate, stand – including the typical spider stance with its front legs raised - or lie flat against a wall.
There are two colour choices; yellow gold-plated and black…which is more realistic and not for the faint hearted. The key to winding the clock is on the underside of the spider’s belly, making it a much more personal proposition. L’Epée’s Arnaud Nicolas explains, “The clock was made in two steps. The first one was the spider itself, and the second took place in the middle of a meeting when I was presenting it and had the spider in my hand near a wall. I was explaining how incredible this new clock was when the idea of hanging it on the wall popped up in my mind. а идею создания часов Arachnophobia Максимилиана Бюссера вдохновила гигантская скульптура паучихи Maman (фр. «мама»). Эта скульптура из бронзы, мрамора и нержавеющей стали, выполненная Луизой Буржуа (1911 – 2010), была установлена в разных странах мира. Бюссер в партнерстве с производителем мирового класса часов фирмой L’Epée разработал не имеющий аналогов дизайн в виде паука. Высокотехнологичный механизм настольных часов производства L’Epée был переработан таким образом, чтобы напоминать головку и брюшко паука. На черном теле куполовидной формы выполнена белая разметка часов и минут. Хорошо видимый механизм с изысканной отделкой имеет восьмидневный запас хода. Все 218 деталей изготовили в швейцарской мастерской L’Epée и, чтобы свести к минимуму риск повреждения во время транспортировки, интегрировали противоударную систему Incabloc, которую обычно можно увидеть только на наручных часах. Не только тело паука кажется живым. На каждом конце брюшка имеются важные механические детали: в голове находится регулятор хода с колеблющимся балансовым колесом и пара челюстей. На другом конце расположен заводной барабан, энергия которого приводит в движение механизм. К брюшку на шарнирных креплениях присоединены восемь вращающихся членистых ног. Версия черного цвета более реалистичная и даже может напугать. С нижней стороны корпуса - паучьего брюшка - находится ключ для завода и настройки часов. Такое расположение позволит владельцу особенным образом прочувствовать свое взаимодействие с часами. Рассказывает Арно Николя из L’Epée: “Создание модели состояло из двух шагов: первый — это разработка самого паука, а второй — когда посреди деловой встречи во время презентации часов я держал паука около стены. Тогда-то, объясняя, насколько эти часы необычайны, я и подумал о том, что они неплохо смотрелись бы на стене. Работа с энергичной командой MB&F всегда удовольствие. В очередной раз мы сделали то, что до нас не делал никто и мы убедились в том, что нет ничего невозможного”. he Costa del Sol enjoys over 300 days a year of sunshine. Another common occurrence over here is healthy outdoor living. Andalucia is meant to be seen from the outside, and sitting out on terraces under an umbrella or behind glass curtains is common place. Even though we get plenty of sunshine, many tourists who visit in the winter months are often surprised at how cold it can become. Our nights in the winter often sends the mercury plummeting, but that doesn’t mean you have to freeze. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the winters as well,
and don’t forget the sun still shines most days. One common thing you’ll see is patio enclosures, glass curtains, and wide open terraces. he winning proposal – Community by Design – submitted by the Belgian architect was developed in collaboration with Mathieu Lebre. The main sponsor of the DOM3 International Architecture Award 2016, Urbania International, provided a plot of land (measuring almost 60,000m²) in the Santa Clara urbanisation in Marbella East for the participants. Tuan proposed ‘Community by Design’ as a construct to provide quality and space for both individuals and the community, to allow full enjoyment of every aspect of the Marbella lifestyle. First to congratulate David Tuan on his prize, we asked him to give us some background. What was required in order for you to win this prestigious competition? We had to design a residential complex with around 120 detached villas, combining 3 plots and treating them as one unit. They wanted an innovative and creative concept without compromising the viability of its construction, so it also had to comply with the regulations, and of course, with the technical codes. Finally, special emphasis was placed on the need to create a community, with meeting spaces that would naturally promote relations amongst residents. Essentially, the main object of the competition was to mirror the high end contemporary architecture in Marbella.
In your opinion which key issues made your project the winning proposal? It was probably the balance between the architecture, landscape and interior design. We developed the three aspects in parallel from the beginning of the project. Moreover, and based on our experience, we knew that it is useless to work hard and then not be able to sell our ideas, so we have taken great care to ensure the images reflect our intentions in detail. Our 3D designers, Angel L. Caceres and Jesus Salas, have done an impeccable job. We have been designing residential complexes over 10 years, so we are used to working at the scale. Over time, we have optimized our production methods allowing us to develop such programs relatively quickly. What are the most important aspects to take into account when designing a family home? The ability to understand and meet the needs of the people who live there is essential. The architecture must serve the people. Secondly, there is a commitment to society; any building must integrate into its immediate environment on a sustainable basis. Construction has to adapt. Finally, creativity is certainly necessary to give concepts a form but only when linked to the experience. Only then will it make sense. For more information: www.dome3.es

По словам автора, проект “Community By Design” – это попытка привнести в частное и общественное пространство качество, простор и объем, чтобы насладиться всей полнотой жизни в Марбелье. В первую очередь, разрешите поздравить Вас с полученной премией. Каковы были требования этого конкурса? Мы должны были разработать жилой комплекс из 120 таунхаусов, соединяющий в единое целое 3 участка земли. Требовалась инновационная и творческая идея, которая бы не нарушала жизнеспособность конструкции и соблюдала бы действующие нормативы и технический кодекс. И, наконец, особый акцент был сделан на необходимости создания общего пространства, способствующего естественному развитию отношений между его жителями. По сути настоящей целью конкурса было предложение поразмышлять о современной архитектуре элитных комплексов в Марбелье.
Почему с Вашей точки зрения ваш проект победил? Вероятно, это баланс между архитектурой, ландшафтом и дизайном интерьера. С самого начала проекта мы одновременно работали в этих трех направлениях. Кроме того, исходя из нашего опыта, мы знали, что даже самый усердный труд бесполезен, если не суметь продать свои идеи, поэтому мы очень внимательно отнеслись к моделям, где досконально и в деталях отобразили наши намерения. Наши 3D дизайнеры, Анхель Л. Касерес и Иисус Салас, сделали свою работу безупречно. Кроме того, в течение 10 лет мы проектировали жилые комплексы и привыкли работать на таком уровне. Со временем наши средства производства стали оптимальными для относительно быстрой разработки таких программ. Какие важные аспекты надо принять во внимание при проектировании семейного жилища? Главное – это способность понимать и удовлетворять потребности жителей дома. Архитектура должна служить людям. Затем, нести обязательства перед обществом. Любое интегрируемое вмешательство в окружающую среду должно быть целесообразно и гармонично. И, наконец, творчество, которое, без всякого сомнения, необходимо, чтобы сделать идею осязаемой, основываясь при этом на практическом опыте. Только тогда это имеет смысл. www.dome3.es

How has your business evolved in 50 years? Our company has followed and adapted in line with furniture and decoration trends. oday this family owned winery boasts over 30 own brands that are enjoyed in more than 90 countries, making them the most international Bodega in Jerez. Located in Jerez de la Frontera, the winery covers around 180,000 square metres, the warehouse is approximately 70,000 square metres and it houses over 50,000 American oak cask, resting and aging using the Solera and Criadera systems typical to Jerez. What is the Solera Aging System? Solera is a method of aging wine and sherry, whereby small amounts of young wines are stored in an upper tier of casks and systematically blended with the more mature wine in the casks stored below. Wine is stores in the cellars in casks according to their age in tiers of 3 or 4. The lower contains the older wine and is called Solera and the
next level is the ‘first Criadera’ which contains slightly younger wine. The ‘second criadera’ is younger still and so on. The wine consumed is always taken from the Solera, and is gradually topped up with wine from the ‘first Criadera’. Andalusian Historical Heritage and Architectural Award Winner Not content with producing world class sherry, Bodegas Williams & Humbert has also won a National Architecture Award. The winery was engineered and designed by architect Ramón Monserrat Ballesté and engineer Antonio Garcia Valcare in the 1970s. In addition, due to the technological design of the winery, it has been declared a “Building of Andalusian Historical Heritage”. The divine perfection of the Ogee

Most architectural sources list the first appearance of classic ‘ogee arches’ in Europe as being in the early part of the 14th century. The shape is considered to be Moorish in origin, which isn’t particularly surprising, considering the influence of Islamic culture over large swathes of southern Europe during this point in history.

In the 18th century the ogee was recognised by the English artist William Hogarth, who described it as “the line of beauty”. The fascination that this shape engenders goes some way to explaining why the ogee appears so often in many different forms of architecture. It is almost as if designers are powerless to resist its form, and are drawn by an attraction that even they don’t fully understand.

So what is an ogee? Sometimes known as a Venetian arch or cyma reversa, the ogee is essentially a moulding created from two curves: the upper curve is concave and the lower is convex. More widely associated with the Venetian Gothic style yet enormously popular throughout the rest of Europe, where examples can be seen on many famous building including the Segovia Cathedral and the Palau de Generalitat in Barcelona. In general it seems to have been used as architectural decoration, rather than an integral part of the structural support.

There is no doubt that the ogee arch has pleased the eye throughout the centuries, and Ogee spotting can be an oddly satisfying hobby. You don’t have to be an expert to find excellent examples on historical buildings, on ‘blind’ archways, windows, on tombs and on screens behind the altar in churches.
