Management of acute odontogenic pain is accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates both opioid and non-opioid analgesics. However, moderate to severe dental pain often occurs well after office hours so it is critical to be able to accurately identify a patient’s need for pain control, develop an individualized pain management plan and assess the efficacy of analgesic agents employed. This program will provide strategies for effectively managing dental pain with opioid and nonopioid analgesics and analgesic adjuvants, while also mitigating associated risks. Special emphasis will be given to appropriate practices for prescribing analgesics as well as identification and treatment of opioid analgesic abuse. ODA Director of Dental Services Christopher A. Moore, MA will provide information on state and federal regulatory compliance requirements. Lunch is provided during this all-day course.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand the pharmacology and mechanism of action of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, as well as their potential for abuse.
• Identify the intended roles of these analgesics in the treatment of acute dental pain, as well as situations which may preclude their use.
• Discuss best practices for prescribing opioid analgesics as part of an individualized patient pain management plan.
• Describe techniques useful in recognizing and identifying potential addiction as well as avoiding potential drug diversion.
• Learn current protocols for the management and treatment of opioid addiction.
• Examine guidelines for proper storage and disposal of unused dosages.
• Discuss local anesthetic agents with respect to their mechanisms of action, adverse effects, contraindications and clinical considerations.
• Differentiate between the two major classes of local anesthetic agents with respect to their distribution, metabolism, adverse effects, drug interactions and contraindications.
• Specify the various local anesthetic agent combinations most commonly used in dentistry and the rationale for their use in specific clinical situations.
• Explain the rationale for the use of vasoconstrictors and potential adverse effects.
Note: This program meets the complete training requirement for Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registrants. This program also meets the Ohio State Dental Board (OSDB) requirement of continuing education in opioid prescribing and addiction awareness.

What is your patient not telling you about what’s in the medicine cabinet? Armed with limited information and faced with rising prescription drug costs, many patients self-medicate with prescription and over the counter (OTC) drug products. Often this is not mentioned during their exam and review of their medical history. Unfortunately, this may put patients at risk for potentially serious interactions and adverse outcomes. This program provides participants with an overview of the dental considerations of the most popular prescription and non-prescription drugs and supplements patients use to self-medicate. Special emphasis will be given
to techniques useful in successfully identifying selfmedication and obtaining a complete patient medication history.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify and evaluate the potential considerations and impact on dental therapy from self-medication with: prescription and over-thecounter drugs; herbal and nutritional supplements; and licit and illicit substances.
• Learn techniques for successfully recognizing and managing self-medicating patients.
• Discover effective communication strategies for obtaining a complete medical history.
Note: This program meets the training requirement for Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registrants when combined with five hours of education from courses with similar content provided by the ODA or other DEA-approved training organizations.

Remember when the dental care aisle in your local pharmacy was actually just a small section of an aisle and only contained a handful of toothbrushes, toothpastes, and maybe some mouthwash? Clearly, times have changed. Now, the dental care aisle is truly an entire aisle (or two) and is filled with a variety of products including toothbrushes, toothpastes, mouthwashes, rinses, and so much more. It’s overwhelming for any dental professional… let alone your patients. Let’s look at the historical progression of many of these products along with many of the DIY modalities to figure out what is best for our individual patient’s needs. In this fun and interactive course, we explore all the myths, legends, and realities that surround a wide range of dental products. We also take a look at dental marketing – including some vintage television commercials that are sure to ring a bell – and discuss how they have helped shape our philosophies as well as the challenges of getting the right products into the hands of our patients.

Clinical practice today uses scientifically sound evidence-based approaches. There is a noticeable shift to the caries treatment paradigm by better preventing and managing caries as a disease at the patient level. Personcentered care is an approach where the
individual in your dental chair is treated as a person rather than a patient, where their personal preferences and shared decisions drive clinical treatment options. This course will address current trends in caries risk management at the patient level utilizing an evidence-based, personcentered methodology. The presentation provides an excellent update relevant to dentist, dental hygienist, assistant, and front office.
Learning Objectives:
• Properly perform a caries risk assessment and propose evidence-based treatment options for your patient.
• List products that really work to treat caries disease.
• Use a person-centered care approach using motivational interviewing and shared decision making to communicate.

The number of Americans over the age of 65 exceeds 15 percent of the population and that number will increase by more than an additional 20 percent over the next few decades. As patient longevity increases so will the number of conditions, diseases, and potential disabilities that these patients will present with in our dental chairs. Medically compromised patients with diseases such as cancers, or lifestyle-associated factors such as obesity, drug use and abuse, as well as the myriad of common, and often underestimated, abnormal physical conditions that we cross paths with on a day- to-day basis demand a sharpened focus during our treatment planning, delivery of care and periodontal maintenance in general dentistry. These
patients require clinicians that have a competent insight into medicine and pharmacotherapies and are capable of deducing findings from patient medical histories and willing to collaborate with patients’ medical providers to provide optimal dental care.
Learning Objectives:
• Participants will receive an up-to-date, concise review of the more common medical disorders that are encountered within general dentistry: basic epidemiology and pathophysiology, signs/ symptoms and accepted medical therapy for the condition and specific dental management recommendations.
• Neurologic, behavioral, and psychiatric disorders, including drug and alcohol abuse will be examined.
• Drug interactions that are significant to dentistry will be reviewed.

Compliance causes many providers not to want to work with insurance companies. The question is always why? The answer today is that many don’t want to have insurance companies dictating
treatment. Did you know that even if you are not in network, you can receive an audit? That a patient can submit bills to their insurance and your NPI is always attached to any insurance billing? When dental offices work with dental insurance carriers, they agree to contractual obligations to adhere to local, state, and federal regulations. The purpose of dental insurance audits is to: make sure the treatments administered to patients are necessary; ensure treatments claimed on insurance were actually performed; that treatments performed were done so correctly; and/ or, that all treatments and procedures were billed correctly. Audits are a way of checks and balances to make sure providers are not taking advantage of insurance carriers by committing fraud. If providers were to take advantage, it would eventually cause detriment to insurance carriers and ruin the benefit of insurance for those who are using it correctly.
Learning Objectives:
• Learn the consequences of a compliance audit.
• What to do if you are summoned to a compliance audit.
• Steps you can take to be prepared in the event of an audit.

OSDB Category: Mandatory Opioid Prescribing Education; 2 hours required per biennium, no limit
Fee: M - $210; NMD - $275
Recommended Audience: Dentists
Support provided by OhioDDS
Management of acute odontogenic pain is accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates both opioid and non-opioid analgesics. However, moderate to severe dental pain often occurs well after office hours so it is critical to be able to accurately identify a patient’s need for pain control, develop an individualized pain management plan and assess the efficacy of analgesic agents employed. This program will provide strategies for effectively managing dental pain with opioid and non-opioid analgesics and analgesic adjuvants, while also mitigating associated risks.

As a national continuing education accreditation system, CERP recognized providers are approved providers of dental continuing education and are recognized as approved CE providers by the dental licensing boards of most states, the licensing agencies of most health-related fields, and certification requirements of most health-related fields.
