To say his pieces are anything but dramatic is nothing short of an understatement; think couture-like meets a dash of whimsical fairy tale-ness and you’ve hit the nail on the head. Krikor Jabotian, the Lebanese designer whose brilliant pieces are stealing the spotlight, speaks to Ohlala! on growing up, the challenges of the Middle East and Sarah Jessica Parker.

A

n affinity for fine arts is what started the journey of one of the Middle East’s hottest talents in the industry right now. That, paired with an equivocal love for fabrics, textile and colour, and being handpicked by Elie Saab to join his creative department, were the building blocks that set Krikor Jabotian on a whirlwind few years that have now landed him in quite an enviable position. “One of the challenges that comes with the territory is the unstable political situation. Fashion is a reflection of our culture and the environment we live in,” says Jabotian, “The precarious nature of Lebanon affects the state of mind of the designer, the buyer, and the tourists that come here to enjoy the country and what it has to offer, fashion included.” In spite of all this he continues to excel, his name now one to watch on the international fashion scene. His bridal wear is breathtakingly beautiful, exuding an ethereal air where couture takes on a modern twist. “I like my bride to always look timeless. This doesn’t mean the dress has to be classic. This means it has to age well. Nothing you would look back and regret.” www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Sarah Jessica Parker is someone who I admire. She’s serious about fashion but in a playful way. She can pull of any look without ever looking ridiculous.” OHLALA!

Rami kadi

If you come from the Middle East then you know for a bride finding her wedding dress is a life changing moment. Enter Rami Kadi, Lebanon’s hottest new designer that has the region’s brides flocking to for that coveted wow factor.

made in the middle east

H

aving mastered the art of haute couture and proven to the world that when it comes to elegance, opulence and standout creativity they are not to be messed with, Lebanon has bred a slew of distinctively talented designers who have left their fashion footprint. Following in the same steps as Elie Saab and Georges Chakra before him, is the Middle East’s newly christened master of femininity; 28-year-old Rami Kadi. In just a few years www.ohlala-magazine.com

this fashion maverick has managed to establish a clientele of local A-listers as well as a bevy of regional pop stars, who turn to the designer when in need to stand out. “The woman I design for is one that turns heads wherever she goes, leaving a trail of seduction and mystery behind - she’s a woman who blows life into the garment she is wearing,” says Kadi. And he couldn’t be more right; looking at his “Early in my childhood, intricate couture I used to alter my mom’s designs, you can’t clothes and help her pick miss noticing the work that her outfits, and by the goes behind time I graduated from luxurious high school I had already the handmade details decided that my vocation and exquisite was to pursue a career in craftsmanship. the fashion field.” “I have been interested in fashion for as long as I remember,” Kadi explains, “Early in my childhood, I used to alter my mom’s clothes and help her pick her outfits, and by the time I graduated from high school I had already decided that my vocation was to pursue a career in the fashion field. It was only natural that I enrolled in ESMOD Beirut in 2005, from which I graduated with honours and distinctions in 2008.” In a short span of time, one that has been impressive as it has been fast, the Lebanese designer has made his name synonymous with beautiful bridal wear, where the Arab world’s socialite flock to for an appointment to have him dress them for the big day. “For me I envision my brides to be very royal but modern at the same time. The dress would have rich volume; all made with lace, silk embroidery and Swarovski crystals. As for the colour, I don’t see it white but light pink,” Kadi says dreamily. And looking at his designs swoosh across the runway, we’re sure that every bride-to-be is dreaming of getting her hands on one of his coveted pieces. OHLALA!

the Animal kingdom Chopard pays homage to the beautiful creatures that make up our world.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

hile celebrating the 150th anniversary of the House of Chopard back in 2010, Caroline Scheufele, the Artistic Director and Co-President of the luxury brand, dreamed up an extraordinary bestiary composed of 150 different animals, all one-of-a-kind creations. Hence the Animal World Collection was born, breathing life into all kinds of creatures; from insects, reptiles and fish to the wildest of animals. Chopard has managed to contribute to the emergence of a new modern vision of jewellery, and the result is a wonderful line of animals adorned with the houses’s most precious stones, proving that there is a humourous and mischievous side to Chopard. Still bursting with ideas and inspiration on this theme, Caroline Scheufele has decided to continue exploring the animal kingdom from a jewellery angle. This year the brand welcomes in two new Haute Joaillerie watches, thus enriching the Animal World family. A naughty brown diamond chimpanzee brings a mischievous twist with emeralds, tsavorites and reddish orange sapphires; while a dainty snail in subtle shades of brown and cognac-coloured diamonds is a cute addition to a wonderful take on our animal kingdom.

what to do before the big day! Our ultimate guide on what to do and when to do it.

12 MONTHS

Thinking of losing those unwanted pounds that seem to never want to budge? Well ditch those absurd crash diets, we know they’re easy, but on the long run they’re quite pointless, and start off with a few essential lifestyle changes to get you on the right track. Now’s the time to step away from any unhealthy eating habits, (yes put those nachos down!), with Qatar’s raw food and detox specialist Nicole van Hattem. The health guru, who’s been teaching Doha how to think, eat and thrive, is the perfect coach and bu** kicker, who’ll have you downing Aloe Vera shots and thinking twice about what you put into your body. For more information visit www.therawhealthcoach.com

NINE MONTHS

Although you might be dieting, exercise shouldn’t take a back burner; after all, nobody likes the extra jiggle that comes with untoned arms (yikes!) The Ritz Carlton offers a Slim and Trim Package, consisting of 5+1 session free, perfect for busting that ugly cellulite away. The 45 72

raw vegan company, delivers cold-pressed juices straight to your door. Try their 3 day detox kit or order a week’s worth if you feel adventurous and kick start a healthier you! For more information visit www.raw-me.com

SIX MONTHS

TWO WEEKS

The first thing everyone notices is a glowing bride so getting one’s skin in order should be high on the beauty to do list. Start off by getting a regimen in place: cleanse twice a day, exfoliate twice a week and invest in the best anti-aging cream you can afford. Adding a high SPF under your makeup every day will keep you wrinkle and pigmentation free! We suggest heading over to the Remède Spa at St.Regis Doha for a one-on-one consultation and skin analysis. Their in-house therapist will then design a facial that caters to your individual needs. To book an appointment call 4446 0300

THREE MONTHS

We know that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, but no pretty bride can do without a bit of prep before the big day. From relaxing massages to must-have facials, a little bit of work prior to the wedding will definitely have its rewards. Follow our steps for the perfect bridal glow!

Now’s the time for you to do a practice run regarding your hair and makeup; you don’t want to be stuck on the big day having a trial and error session that will rattle your already buzzed nerves! Head over to Doha’s most recognised fashion hairdresser, David Martinez, at the Blue Brush Salon and try out a bunch of options for the big day. A key trend for weddings this season is the braid, so try out a messy plait or pulled-back version for a trendy do. To book an appointment call 4423 3022

ONE MONTH

It pays to book an appointment with your hairdresser a month in advance to make any last minute changes to your mane. If you’re happy with your hair’s length then just get a trim so that it’s sprussed up or if you’re brave enough, which most of us aren’t, take off an extra centimeter for a more refreshed look. We suggest heading over to Yehia & Zakaria Hair Salon at Grand Hyatt Doha; these guys have been in the hair business for years so you’re in good hands! To book an appointment call 4423 3022

THREE WEEKS

To shine on the outside one needs to sparkle on the inside first; a quick juice detox is a smart way to get your system clean and flush out all the toxins. Raw M.E, the Qatari www.ohlala-magazine.com

You’re going to be smiling until you can’t say the word cheese anymore; that’s why pearly whites are a must right before the big day. Invest in a whitening treatment or schedule an appointment with your local dentist for some pretty dentures, just don’t go too white; we wouldn’t want to scare your guests!

ONE WEEK

Are the pre-wedding jitters getting to you? Calm those nerves down with a pampering session at La Cigale’s Ozone gym and spa. Their fabulous Wedding Package includes a trio of traditional Hammam body treatment, Ozone Spa signature body massage and brightening facial treatment. End your day with a complementary dinner for two at Le Cigalon restaurant. To book an appointment call 4428 8000

TWO DAYS

When faces are pale and complexions are pallid, Doha’s fashion savvy descend on the Bliss Spa at W Hotel for a visit with the sun. Get a golden glow for that big day, and pick a pretty shade of tan to compliment your dress. Don’t forget to exfoliate 24 hours before; nobody likes a patchy tan! To book an appointment call 4453 5555

DAY BEFORE

It goes without saying but book your manicure and pedicure in advance and leave time in the evening for a good shower and an early night’s rest. We love the Nails salon located at the Four Seasons Doha’s Franck Provost. With professional therapists and the latest polishes and services from nail extensions to UV polish, this is the perfect choice for luxury manicures and pedicures. The Pre-Wedding Facial

Tried &Tested Ohlala! went on a mission to find the most indulgent treatment in town; here our beauty editor recounts her quest for the much coveted glow. S.O.S! My skin has been crying out for a quick summer pick-me-up. I might not be getting married, but with the slew of wedding invitations I have accepted for the next two months I feel like it’s my big day coming up. Now the mission to find where to have said facial seemed easier when I put up my hand to do the review; the city is buzzing with a myriad of spas each advertising their treatment as the deal du jour. Much research 74

OHLALA!

later, and a bit of investigative journalism of course, I head over to West Bay’s luxury address: The Four Seasons Doha. I have booked myself in for their Samadara Facial, which promises me to leave with my best face forward. Entering the haven that is the spa, and I already feel half my woes being left behind at the door; meditative music, muted colours and a zen like atmosphere are already helping me unwind. I’m whisked away to get changed and sip on lemongrasschilled water before I’m taken for my treatment. A pretty therapist welcomes me into a dimly lit room and immediately I begin to relax; it is always reassuring when your facialist has flawless skin, no? The first step to the Ultimate AgeDefying Facial starts off with a general cleanse using a mixture of chamomile and lavender. My skin tingles as I’m sprayed with a calming Rose Mist that preps my face for a trio of Eye Lifting Gel, Balancing Face and Neck Moisturizer and Eye and Lip Smoother. I get a gentle massage to get my circulation flowing with a beautiful pair of cool diamond like crystals; who knew that a girl’s best friend could be used for such a thing? It’s on to the most important part of the treatment, one that if you’re claustrophobic is definitely worth skipping: The Thermal Mask. A thick, exotic smelling might I add, mask is gently brushed on to my face and covered by layers of what I can only assume to be mesh. After that, a towel is set atop the said concoction and, as I’m left in the darkness of my facial cocoon, I can feel the mask heat up. Twenty minutes later and an arm scrub and massage after, I’m set free as

my facialist peels off a hardened cast of my face. She swiftly cleans up any residue and polishes me up for what sadly is the end of a wonderful treatment. The result: the exquisite facial, which uses a sequence of timeless anti-ageing techniques founded in Ayurvedic healing, has left me with a glowing complexion and a realistic plan on how to best manage my skin. To say that I left happy is an understatement; I’ve already booked another treatment for next month! Book an appointment at the Four Seasons Doha Spa by calling 4494 8888

What tips do you have for brides planning a wedding? Don’t Stress out! Start off with a list of the most important things you need to get done like picking a date, drawing a budget, booking the hotel, etc. Then cross them off as you go. What has been the most outrageous wedding you have ever planned? Last April, we hosted a wedding for 900 guests and let me tell you, the bride was not the easiest to deal with but I understand, with such a number, I would freak out myself! I had to put up with all the mood swings and make sure everything ran smoothly. They even brought international acts and changed entertainment several times just a few days before the wedding. Have you ever had any exceptional demands? I had a bride who wanted to enter the ballroom on a crane! What do you think are the big wedding “don’ts”? Don’t leave things to the last minute; never think that minor stuff can be delayed. What are the current wedding trends in Qatar? These days weddings have to have a huge catwalk for the bride to walk down and a massive dance floor for her friends to dance on. Sweet trays are a must to be distributed amongst guests as well as traditional Arabic coffee and dates. www.ohlala-magazine.com

aserati is an exotic brand, and as such, a purchase of one is not driven by the mind, but by the heart. It is never a ‘sensible’ choice to buy an exotic Italian brand, simply because they’re luxury goods, and therefore very expensive. It is therefore of the utmost importance that a Maserati appeals to the senses and the emotions above all else, because it is by winning over these that they will win over customers. I’ve driven several Maserati models over the years, and each and every one of them has

92

been stunning it its own way, but each has also been let down by imperfections that a car of its calibre shouldn’t have. For example, a few years ago I drove a Quattroporte, and while I was impressed by its looks, its power and its ride comfort, I was equally unimpressed by a slightly dated looking interior and a very dated infotainment system. More recently, we drove a drop-deadgorgeous metallic blue GranTurismo Sport, which was beautiful in every single way except for, once again, the dated infotainment system. Maseratis of today, however, have addressed all of these issues, and the Ghibli is no

The Ghibli is, without a doubt, the most complete Maserati we’ve had the pleasure to drive so far

The Maserati Ghibli will appeal to the styleconscious woman who appreciates luxurious Italian design and passion for beauty. exception. Once again, the infotainment system was the least impressive thing about the Ghibli, but not because it is dated, or poor quality. It is, in fact, extremely good, with intuitive controls, a modern looking interface, and really nice graphics on the satnav. No, the reason why the infotainment system on the Ghibli is the least impressive thing about it is because the rest of the car is so damn good! It is beautiful both without and within. From the outside, it manages to accomplish the same delicate balancing act that the Quattroporte does, boasting that classic Maserati styling whilst still looking like a car of this day and age. With smooth, sweeping lines and an aggressive stance, the car exudes an aura of power and speed, and is a pleasure to behold. Inside, the beauty continues – it is one of the best-looking interiors I’ve ever seen, with smooth, curving lines and plush leather surfaces wherever you look, and not a harsh angle in sight. It screams luxury, and makes

www.ohlala-magazine.com

the driver satisfied that it is worth every penny of the many thousands they’ve spent on it! To drive, it is as sublime as the rest of the Maserati fleet, combining a smooth, refined ride with impressive handling and power on tap to create a car that is truly a joy to drive. Our particular model was the standard Ghibli, boasting a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 with 330hp and an impressive 500Nm of torque. It’ll propel the Ghibli from standstill to 100km/h in jut 5.6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 263km/h.

Figures for the Ghibli S are even more impressive – the same engine is tuned to 410hp/550Nm, and it will hit 100km/h in 5 seconds, and top out at 285km/h. The Ghibli is, without a doubt, the most complete Maserati I’ve had the pleasure to drive so far, although I haven’t driven any others of the most recent Maserati range. I think that just means I’ve got a lot to look forward to!

The Targa Returns!

The latest incarnation of the classic Porsche 911 Targa arrived in Qatar last month, much to the joy of Porsche enthusiasts across the country…

i

t’s a style that has inspired countless classic sports cars since it was first introduced to a Porsche 911 almost half a century ago. The ‘targa’ is defined as a semi-convertible model boasting a detachable roof with a full-width roll bar behind the front seats and a fixed rear window. It was a style first seen on the 1966 Porsche Targa, and while many other automotive manufacturers have since emulated it, the Targa remains purely a Porsche concept, and is indeed a registered Porsche trademark. The latest 911 Targa goes back to a classic Porsche design – whereas the last three generations, the 993, 996 and 997, had a retractable roof that slid back like a sunroof, this latest model raises the rear glass window, and packs the roof away behind the rear seats, leaving just the window behind. Just like the original model, the new 911 Targa features the characteristic wide bar in place of the B-pillars, a movable roof section above the front seats and a wraparound rear window with 94

OHLALA!

no C-pillar. But unlike the classic models, the roof segment can be opened and closed at the push of a button in just 19 seconds. The models joining the 911 line-up are the Targa 4 and Targa 4S, both all-wheel-drive models, with the 4 powered by a 3.4-litre, 350hp flat engine. When equipped with the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and Sport Chrono package, this model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds and boasts a top speed of 282 km/h. The 4S delivers 400hp from a displacement of 3.8 litres. This model reaches a top speed

of 296 km/h and, when equipped with the PDK and Sport Chrono package, accelerates to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds. The power from the flat-six engines is transmitted by a standard seven-speed manual transmission. The highly impressive and super-fast automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) is available as an option on both models. Salman Jassem Al Darwish, Chairman and CEO of Porsche Centre Doha, said: “The 911 is a sports car which has won more races than any other and, in this latest evolution, I believe it has never looked more spectacular. In the 911 Targa, we see the ultimate in driving dynamics come together with stunning design and the very latest in ground-breaking roof technology. The car’s arrival here in Qatar signifies a new chapter in the legendary model’s evolution and I am incredibly proud and excited to welcome it.” To find out more, contact the Porsche Centre Doha on +974 4459 9666. www.ohlala-magazine.com

SPOTLIGHT: PRADASphere

Last May saw famed British department store, Harrods Knightsbridge, team up with Prada on a month-long celebration, which saw its fourth floor transformed into an ode to Miuccia. From 40 window displays to a pop-up store and an elegant Marchesi café, the Pradasphere showcased an exhibition that traced the company’s multivalent obsessions—from fashion to art, cinema and beyond.

The Pradasphere showcased a wonderful collection of archival objects arranged to reveal the complex, often intertwined obsessions of Prada. Six towering showcases were dedicated to the central themes of the house displaying ensembles from several collections, as well as heritage items from the Prada archives. 112 OHLALA!

The 130msq Prada pop-up store, designed in classic Prada style, featured an iconic black-and-white-chequered marble floor, slim polished-steel and crystal display shelves, striking black marble portals, steel and crystal display counters, and lilac velvet ottomans. The boutique showcases women’s leather goods, accessories, jewellery and eyewear.

Against a backdrop of the London skyline is the Marchesi cafĂŠ, patisserie, and restaurant; an elegant Milanese institution, renowned for its delicious pastries, chocolates, and Panettone recently purchased by Prada.

The Brompton Road windows lit up with treasures from the Prada archives shown alongside a new capsule collection created exclusively for Harrods, which came inspired by key Prada pieces from the last 100 years. www.ohlala-magazine.com

MISS OHLALA!

Escapades of a single 20-something girl living in Doha. The five girls you find at a wedding I am running out of dresses this month because of the amount of weddings that are jam packed into my weekends. The dress you wear to a wedding defines who you are going to be that night, and so the decision cannot be taken lightly. So before looking through your wardrobes, let’s analyse the types of girls you find at weddings so you can decide wisely. The one that is dying to get married The dress: Emperor cut, long with a train. Not too much cleavage. Hair up. This is the girl who runs around the wedding telling everyone that would listen how much she wants to find someone. She looks lovely this evening but no man asks her to dance because of that eager smile and the desperation in her eyes. She doesn’t spend too much time making small talk with anyone except for eligible bachelors because this girl is on a mission! Sadly, this is also the girl who ends up disappointed later, because none of those bachelors ever call her although she gave each of them her number, twice. The girl that wants to have fun The dress: This old thing? The Little Black Dress. Usually too much cleavage or no back. From afar she may come across like girl number 1, but if you look closely you will realize she is the one actually getting all male attention. Her dress is tight, her heels are high (although she takes them off and dances barefoot after a few hours) and she is most probably already a bit lightheaded by the time you get there. Most girls don’t think she’s pretty, but the best man sure does! To cut a long story short: she never goes home alone. The minion The dress: Cute with ribbons and bows. Comfortable shoes because this girl needs to run around all night. Every bride is queen bee on her wedding night, and there is always a girl standing right next to her 130 OHLALA!

throughout the evening. She holds her perfume, fluffs her dress and tops up her lipstick for her throughout the wedding. Now if this girl is the bride’s sister or best friend then she is not a minion, this girl I’m talking about assumes this role at every wedding. She gets off just being close to something so shiny and pretty. The vixen The dress: bold colors and lots of jewellery that oozes confidence. This girl is a mean one. She spends the whole wedding criticizing everything from the choice of song for the first dance to the setup. “Oh my god, did you see the way she was looking at her ex? I mean it was so obvious she wishes it was him she was marrying. Maybe then she would have invested in a dress that doesn’t look like she bought it off of e-bay.” You know this girl because either you are her, or, you guiltily indulge in her stories. The filler The dress: Timeless. This dress has no specific style nor significance but is pretty and flattering. Her dress is boring and her presence is unnoticed. She is at the wedding because she is invited and so feels it is her duty to attend. She merely fills up the background of the wedding. I mean, she doesn’t even post a selfie on Instagram! We are all one of these girls sometimes, depending on our moods or how close we are to the couple getting married. But why leave your night to fate when you can preplan how the night will go?! Just consider me your fortuneteller. Tata for now, until next time. Miss Ohlala!
