Jimmy Choo

“A #GIRLBOSS is someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.” Sophia Amoruso

As I sit front of my computer reminiscing about my summer vacation in San Francisco last year, I can’t help but smile involuntarily, thinking: “I’m in charge of my life and if I want it, I need to work for it,” undeniably a wise concept and an inspiring one coming from my all-time favourite person, Sophia Amoruso the Greek-American goddess. With February being so short and packed with lavish events – Doha never disappoints – Ohlala!’s team and I have hustled to bring leading features which we’re absolutely confident you’ll appreciate in this month’s edition. We are ecstatic to share our ETRO fashion shoot held at The Pearl-Qatar; it was certainly a refreshing event working with French photographer, Sebastien Jardini who was able to grasp and transform such a beautiful concept. When it comes to style trends, we’ve got the perfect tips for you; from layering, to big sleeves, to crazy colours – it’s all fabulous in the fashion department! Hold on! Georgie Bradley, our regional fashion and beauty editor, put a spotlight on Louise Turner – the perfumer for Roberto Cavalli’s new scent: Paradiso. For those who crave a quick getaway in the city, I had the pleasure to visit The Ritz-Carlton, Doha Spa and share an exquisite must-try massage. For my fellow peeps that are brunch-lovers, we hunted down a must-try brunch at the Crowne Plaza for an all-inclusive family day. Enjoy the magical world of Ohlala! Qatar…

“This sophisticated watch takes its name from the Latin word for feather, subtly hinting at the delicate design that accentuates its most striking element

The elegant yet understated design of this OMEGA watch is distinguished by the state-of-the-industry timepieces that combine innovation with style.

This Constellation Pluma is presented on a bracelet with brushed stainless steel links and polished 18K red gold bars. The OMEGA CoAxial calibre 8520 at its heart is visible through a domed scratch-resistant caseback and the precision and reliability of this mechanical movement is such that the timepiece is offered with a full four-year warranty.

30

OHLALA!

Similar to its sisters, this 27 mm timepiece is decorated with 11 diamond indexes in 18K gold holders and a soft-wavy pattern that flows between the iconic claws on the bezel.

This evocative interpretation of the Constellation Pluma whose light coral-coloured dial is reminiscent of warm sunshine, is the perfect way to ease into springtime.

Its polished and facetted central hour, minute and seconds hands are crafted from 18K gold and coated with white SuperLumiNova, so the time can be read in a variety of lighting conditions. The 18K red gold bezel is paved with 32 full-cut diamonds, adding to the overall style of this piece. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Crafted from 18k yellow, rose and white gold, and set with diamonds and colored gemstones, the ‘Flower of Eternity’ collection ranges from simple pendants to ornate four-piece sets. The result is a selection of iconic pieces perfect for every mood from daytime chic to the most dazzling evening sophistication.

For more than a century the Mouawad family has produced stunning, bejeweled masterpieces destined for royalty, celebrities and luxury lovers around the world. The Flower of Eternity collection continues this tradition of passion for excellence through a stylish line of jewellery that exudes contemporary glamour.

One Flower Three

Hearts

Love, passion, fidelity… all this and much more were conveyed in centuries past through the gift of a single stem or bouquet. Each variety of flowers had a hidden meaning, adopted by

lovers as a secret language to send subtle messages via every bloom. The Flower of Eternity collection brings a contemporary take on this cherished tradition. Studied carefully, the flower emblem reveals its composition of heart shapes. The heart, chosen as a universally recognised emblem of love and passion, appears three times, a symbolic number representing the past, the present, and the future, denoting a promise of eternity.

Lamya

A pioneer for extravagant abayas

56

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Style Insight As a self-taught designer, how were you able to break into the industry through trial and error? Was it hard to be taken seriously as a budding fashion designer? It all began in 2008 when I was searching for an abaya for myself and I couldn’t get my hands on a one-of-a-kind piece. My love for fashion, styling and creative design seemed to become my inner calling that urged me to explore my creative senses. So I decided to make abayas for myself. With my family’s support, encouragement from friends and compliments from my confidants, it made me who I am today. I am an ardent lover of fashion, styling, beauty, textile, culture and history. Today these are my biggest inspirations and my work is always a glorious representation of these interests. But my true belief is that a designer is someone who brings style into life, so I always look for ways of making the ‘everyday’ into the ‘extraordinary’ through my

designs. I have taken inspiration from near and far – from folk dancers of Mexico to the spring ceremonies of the Japanese cherry blossom season. And sometimes closer to home, I find myself intrigued by my son’s dinky car collections or my daughter’s bedtime stories. Tell us a little bit about the concept behind the name: Queen of Spades The name ‘Queen of Spades’ comes from my wish to treat every one of my clients like royalty; my abayas are fit for queens and the ‘spades’ symbolise the blackness of the abayas. They also have a modern and fantastical twist. How do you want women to feel when they wear your abayas? In a deck of cards, the Queen of Spades is regarded as the most powerful of them all. So as my brand name suggests, I make each every piece fit for a

queen. So when you are wearing a Queen of Spades abaya, it’s not just a fashion statement, but a garment that has been thoughtfully designed and proudly showcases a story that is glorified in the materials and weaves used to produce it. And above all, it’s the only abaya of its kind in existence, giving my clients an unrivalled feeling of uniqueness. Your spring/summer 2015 collection, The Enchanted Forest, fringes on the medieval with heavy embroidery and velvety fabrics. They could easily be used in a period drama. What took your designs to this fantasy world? My latest collection promises to take you on a fairy tale ride through the Enchanted Forest. Knights and kingdoms, love and nostalgia have become my biggest inspirations for this line. There are 75 unique creations that portray a feminine but edgy fashion fairy tale, reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Hoods, tunics, cloaks, surcoats,

capes and kirtles, gowns, chemises and headgears of yesteryear have been redefined for today’s feminine fashionistas. Favourites of the bygone era have become the mainstay of the Enchanted Forest Collection. This is in fact the first time you will see Queen of Spades abayas in these fashion avatars. The collection is dedicated to women who were born to rule. Today’s woman to me is a visionary and a seeker, who cherishes her past as she rides into the future. This collection is dedicated to these women - the powerful leader, the confident feminist, and the charming princess who spreads her magic wherever she goes. What kind of materials have you used? I’ve used lavish winter textures like tweeds and suedes, fur and wool juxtaposed with velvets, linen, organza, leather and cotton. You’ll see lots of mesh works, embossed jacquards, tassles and www.ohlala-magazine.com

lots of layering in the pieces. Deep plums, plush crimsons, emeralds, mint and forest greens, ochres and sunset oranges are smeared over the new collection of abayas, displaying a winter palette that is cool, bold, vibrant and intense. Patterns and shimmer, two Queen of Spades favourites, reappear in the latest collection in various forms. The sizzling winter abayas show off geometric shapes, stripes and florals in abundance. Jacquards, sequins, beads and brocade raise a toast to the glamourous diva. The collection is available in stores at Galeries Lafayette and Valleydez Boutiques, ready to surprise and enthral the fashion forward. Talk us through your meet with Guiliana Rancic, how did that come about? It all happened during her visit to Dubai for the inauguration of her first pop up store called G by

Giuliana. She was the first to get her hands on the Enchanted Forest Collection. Along with a specially monogrammed grey outfit customised, I created another sheer shawl hooded abaya with lace and sequin trims to suit her gorgeous personality. She was mesmerised by the sequin embellished abaya. Meeting her and her lovely husband, Bill, and telling me how much she loved the pieces and how happy she was to be packing them with her to take back home was indeed an honour. You’ve already wowed us with The Enchanted Forest collection. What are you planning for the next collection? I have forever been mesmerised by time, history, culture, and folklore and it will only continue for me – but with a trip across another time and continent. Keep tight for yet another trip in the Queen of Spades fashion time machine! OHLALA!

5 Ways To Bouffant Your Hair Feeling a desire to channel your inner Farrah Fawcett? Here’s our guide to max up your locks without a trip to the salon.

Blow Dry Upside Down It’s not the most rocket science technique but it tends to get overlooked. Flip your hair and focus on blowing your roots. After blow drying, avoid heavy leave-in conditioners, shine serums and styling products that will just weigh your hair down after all your hard work.

Teasing It’s the ultimate nemesis technique for some. Backcombing is a love/hate situation because while it does the job, brushing your hair afterwards is pain like no other. But with longlasting and poof-giving results, the adage: no pain, no gain never rung so true.

Barbara palvin

Ditch the layers Once upon a time layers were all the rave. As texture giving as they are, layers thin out the hair. Keep to one blunt length as it gives the illusion of thicker hair – it will make a big difference in the strength and thickness in the long run.

Rose Byrne

Dry Shampoo You’ll be getting a two in one deal with dry shampoo because not only does it absorb the oil from your hair, it inadvertently packs on the volume. Just spray it all over your hair (for best results focus on your roots) and massage your head to get rid of the white powder residue. Baptiste is a sure-fire product. Available at Boots.

Bun for Bed You know when you wake up some mornings and your hair is randomly awesome and you don’t know why? Well now you can have guaranteed hair success every morning. After you’ve had your shower the night before, make sure to blow dry your hair immediately until it’s almost dry. Then just put it up in a tight bun (or as tight as you can sleep in) and go to bed. You’ll wake up looking like Diana Ross, but by breakfast it’ll have tamed to a cub’s mane and you’ll be good to go for the rest of the day.

Brow This Way Eyebrows, despite being the most face-defining feature we’ve got, cause a lot of bother. These celebrities have the kind of arches we’re after, so follow our three-step process and bring on those big brows.

Beauty Insight

A Hint of Confidence Louise Turner has a real nose for smell. Her latest creation, Roberto Cavalli Paradiso, fuses elements from Italian landscapes and all the odours that come with it. She talks to Ohlala! about the creative process.

How did you sniff your way to become a perfumer? I tripped over perfumery - I had started my studies to become a dentist, and during university holidays I got a job at a local fragrance company whose factory was close to where my parents lived in Kent ,UK. It was my destiny as I fell in love with perfumery – this mix of art and science – I was so lucky then as I now realise that it’s very difficult to break into as there are very few opportunities. Over time do you feel like your sense of smell as only gotten better or perhaps a bit tired? The sense of smell develops the more you use it - so it has gotten better and better, but like everything I can have days where I’m tired and my sense of smell is not as precise as I would like! Where do you get your inspiration from? From many different places, but mainly from nature which is always a challenge to try and create something that smells as good as what Mother Nature does .. Presumably you’re always working because you smell all the time, right? Do you ever give your nose a rest? I sometimes wish I could turn my nose off but that is a rarity. It can be overstimulated at times; having said that, last year there was a fire outside of Paris (where I live) during the night and the odour of smoke and fumes woke me up so I’m happy that my sensitivity has an added value and not just as a perfumer!! You’ve previously worked on Roberto Cavalli perfumes. What kind of woman wears his perfumes? The Roberto Cavalli woman is someone who loves life and lives it to the full, who wants to be noticed, is self confident and sensual. 76

“I fell in love with perfumery – this mix of art and science – I was so luck then as I now realise that it’s very difficult to break into as there are very few opportunities.” What defines your new perfume, Paradiso? An interpretation of the Italian “joie de vivre”. What are the main ingredients? It’s built around the inspiration of Italian landscapes, so the top notes are bergamot and mandarine, the heart is wild jasmine as well as the key ingredient with bases notes of cypress, pin and pink laurel. What occasion would a woman wear this perfume? It’s a fragrance that can be worn for every occasion – be it day or night, out with friends or to a special event. What are your personal favourite scents? I wear Paradiso as I really like the smell of jasmine but I also like Mitsouko from Guerlain and I have a fragrance that is not sold yet whose odour is around the smells of tonka beans which I really indulge in. www.ohlala-magazine.com

A Weekend in Athens

With the world’s gaze upon Greece – will it rise from the ashes or will it be booted out of the Eurozone? – the country has been getting a lot of press. The islands get most of the heat but Georgie Bradley thinks there’s a lot to be said about the country’s capital.

Travel Escapes I feel really disloyal for saying this, being half Greek, but Athens

isn’t a pretty city in the way that Florence is. But it has its ancient and modern charm which, with all the noisy political hubbub, makes it a highly energetic and charged city. As a native of northern Greece, my trips to Athens have always been few and far between; mainly a few layover hours at the airport and the occasional hotel stay in the airport’s vicinity. As well as being the home to the ancient ruins, democracy (well, let’s see) and mythology, Athens has one too many post-modern eyesores choking the city, and a lot of depressing boarded up buildings with political rhetoric written in very loud graffiti. So I thought I’d get the bad stuff out the way first as it’s good to be warned and also say that it is in fact the above mixed with the pace of the city that gives it its charm. No longer than a four-and-a-half-hour flight away, Athens is a reachable way to get your dose of Europe. When you first get to the city, you’ll most likely find yourself gravitating to Syntagma Square – opposite Parliament, where the obligatory tourists photos are taken with the guards. The words hustle and bustle will never feel so apt. Take Ermou Street as a starting point (this is your Oxford Street equivalent) and deviate from the straight-line mass of shops and take in the winding roads lined with cafes – Greeks are hugely social creatures and love some parea (company) and frappe (ice-coffee) – and cobbled streets with chalkboard signs outside of restaurants. Don’t worry about using your GPS, you’ll more than likely end up in Monastiraki and Plaka where churches and antique looking shops with vintage finds have a partial, if not full view of the Acropolis and Parthenon relics. Day or night, the place is abuzz with atmosphere. Now don’t forget to get your gyro. It’s your shawarma/kebab equivalent but better. Wrapped in a lathopita (olive oil drenched pitta) shavings of chicken pieces are messily but happily stuffed in with French fries, tzatziki (yoghurt based cucumber and garlic sauce) crunchy onions, the juiciest tomatoes you’ve ever had, more garlic and a sprinkle of chili if you like your spice. I’ve been known to inhale a couple of gyros in one go with room for more and I’ve never regretted it. But if you’re wanting a more peeled back version of the cuisine where fatty oils aren’t at the centre of the cooking process, any taverna (the traditional, iconic wooden chair type restaurant) will have a hearty selection of aubergine, lentil and lean meat based dishes. Now if you haven’t already sussed it out, Greeks have a notoriously carnivorous diet and they’re proud of it too. However, there are a handful of places off the main square where you can get your vegetarian/raw vegan options with a dollop of Greek honey for a Hellenic touch. Check out Avocado Café.

Nitty gritty edge in Gazi

And then go beyond the centre. There is so much more to Athens than meets the eye. For a gritty, alternative experience head to Gazi from Syntagma on the metro where you’ll be getting a hipster taste of modern Athens with lots of industrial outlets that embrace the traditional Greek café set up with nostalgic love. And if you want to go all burby – head to the residential areas like Kifissia and Glyfada (near the waterfront) to get a real sense of upper end Athens life with some sprawling apartments and mansions with sizeable swimming pools to lust over, while districts like Holargos and Chalandri have that warm and fuzzy suburban feel with a massive café culture. Once you’ve ticked off all the tourist essentials, just roam around town and engage with the locals, even with your language barrier, because if the Greeks are one thing, they are hospitable. 88

I

I rush through the lobby eager to make a quick ‘pit-stop’ at the hotel’s famous and casual, Quick Bites for my usual hot drink: cappuccino. As I order my coffee – and a bit nervous, I’ll admit – I go through the questions, one last time. I immediately think of the multiple ways I could start the conversation with the executive chef of such a prominent hotel and how to make him feel at ease and how to make our interview enjoyable. Ten minutes later, chef Christian Jean arrives with a smile on his face, making me feel at ease, ready to tackle this long-awaited interview. We both sit down at the hotel’s grandiose, West End Café and Patisserie, a delightful and luxurious place – perfect to start our culinary curiosities. Christian has been living in Qatar for the last six years, with an impeccable résumé and outstanding knowledge of culinary secrets, I couldn’t help but ask about his most challenging obstacles as a chef. “I lived for two-and-a-half-years in Monaco and had difficulty adjusting to the French culture. The lifestyle, opinions and standards were very different from mine. It was a life changing experience.” Christian Jean is not only responsible for all the restaurants in the hotel, but he is the mastermind behind every detail: “ I was enticed into accepting this job opportunity because I was responsible for the pre-opening of the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel. I was the actingdirector of food and beverage; I came up with the mood-board, lighting and business. It was a very big step in the progress of my career,” the chef adds, with a grin on his face. On top of being an executive chef, Christian has an exquisite eye for culinary photography. The French-born chef has re-launched his website – www.tastesofthefuture.com – where he indulges his readers with some tantalising recipes of his own and interesting photography. “When I’m feeling stressed, photography is my escape. I’ve been into photography for many years, it’s something chefs nowadays neglect – culinary photography is a very important element in this industry.” When asking the chef ’s favourite dish to cook, he smiles and adds, “I’m a very curious person, I try different things. I like to develop flavours. I’m quite spontaneous when it comes to cooking.” How can he not be spontaneous when he’s lived and worked in fascinating countries like: Singapore, South Korea, Monaco, Portugal, and UAE, among others – the world is an oyster for such a creative mind. Chef Christian Jean likes

www.ohlala-magazine.com

to adapt his recipes and ingredients according to country and team. “My favourite ingredients evolve and change. I discover new ingredients in the local market – spices were my passion, especially pepper and its different flavours.” With a tremendous title like executive chef, there are naturally, challenging responsibilities that come with it. Chef Christian Jean not only works hand-in-hand with aspiring and professional chefs like himself, but encourages everyone to be the best they can be: “I’m sharing everything with my team! It challenges them and myself.” Before ending our heart-warming conversation, I decided to ask for a piece of advice for the many young chefs who are trying to make it in the culinary industry. “Do not skip steps, and be patient. The new generation tends to be impatient. Take time to learn,” he quickly adds. After having two cups of coffee and a delectable chocolate croissant, I’m sure I’ll be back for more.

The column I’m at my office cubicle looking nonchalantly through the window – I reach for my phone and it’s her, again, calling… She has been calling for the last thirty minutes and in such a short period of time she has called, perhaps, fifteen times – and believe me, it’s not urgent. We’ve all been part of toxic friendships and this one in particular, is the most toxic friend I’ve come to have. I like to compare these friendships – which I’m sure, we’ve all had – to leeches. They are time-consuming; they steal all of one’s energy and demand a very peculiar kind-of-attention. If you’re lucky enough to detect this type of people before you let them into your life… run! If you are naïve, gullible and give people too many chances, then, you’re in for a treat. Our friendship started seven years ago. We met in Qatar – it was at a time where I was new to the country and encountering a girl like her, being the same age as me, was almost too good to be true. We had an incredible friendship, our communication was the best – not to mention the experiences we

MissOhlala Letting Go of Toxic People had together – little did I know, things where about to get rough. As time progressed she demanded more and more of my time – the incessant phone calls and obnoxious tantrums she would create to get my and her boyfriend’s attention – started to become part of our daily routines. There was not a single Thursday night we could go out and enjoy ourselves – like any normal 20-year-old – instead it was sabotaged by chaos, crying, drama and tears which no amount of makeup could hide! Being the loyal and warmwelcoming friend that I am, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for what she was going through. They say, “third time’s a charm,” but it took me a while and my loved one’s intervention to fully understand the situation. I chose for my peace of mind and decided to part ways with her, not knowing what I’d gotten myself into. When I told her that her actions and obsessive behaviour were suffocating – threats started to arise. On that same night, she came to my house stalking my every move… (scary stuff!) After that uncomfortable and unfortunate incident, I realised I needed a stronger voice to make her understand how toxic people and their toxic behaviours were no longer welcome in my life. There are many red flags we can look out for when it comes to detecting toxic friends. If you think you’re giving too much of yourself to a friendship that is not positive, or healthy– think again! It’s one thing to have compassion for your best friend, but it’s another when someone sucks all your energy out. Until next time, XO

Inslee,
