Editor’s Letter
Fashion forward
We have been very busy this month. For this issue, we talked to an eclectic range of women in Doha who are at the top of their fields. On the fashion side of things, we spoke to South African model, Angelique de Lange and talked about the misconceptions that people have about modeling, and Qatar-based blogger, Karen Nicolet, who writes for Clumsy Chic and describes her style as “Mick Jagger going to the gym”. Talk about being unique! We also sat down with Thalia Suzuma, who is kick-starting the book scene in our little peninsula; she tells us why her work at Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing is so important. Our photoshoot this month features a super cool Maserati and Ferrari, so get ready to drool over the cars as well as the clothes, and read about the new Lexus RX 350 in our Diva Drives review. And of course, the usual fashion pages where we update you about all the best trends that you need to know about. We would also like to introduce you to Laura Hamilton, who will be Ohlala!’s editor from the next issue. Expect to see her stamp her personality over the coming pages of your favourite fashion magazine! Get busy reading! Edward Smith

Diamond is always at the core of Messika’s creations! This piece is of the Daria jewellery collection, which plays on the accumulation of graded barrettes with micro stone settings. The setting is completely concealed by a profusion of sparkling diamonds. The dazzling effect is accentuated by the extreme fluidity, where the exquisite articulated barrettes dance with light.

Studded Beauty
The Venus line collection from Versace is a new generation of mini-format jewellery watches. The guilloché pattern embellishes not only the small dial, but both bezels, the larger of which is clad in a layer of coloured aluminium. Featuring a single pink topaz gemstone enclosed between two casings and bezels, it appears as if it’s floating in mid-air. 30

Decidedly Elegant
Tod’s Women’s RTW Collection for Autumn-Winter 14-15 created by Alessandra Facchinetti called the ‘Italian Set’, is based on a combination of leather with jacquard, wool, mink or cashmere to create a timeless, luxurious, sophisticated style. A military theme runs throughout. Think Montgomery duffle coats, capes, trench coats, half-belted cabans and uniform-style leather skirt. The effect: decidedly elegant, rather than utilitarian.
ultra-femininity, independence and sophistication. The Montblanc Bohème lady timepiece has floral Arabic numerals with their sensuous curves discreetly raised by a minute scale. With the simple elegance of its case and its delicately curved, bevelled horns, in red gold or stainless steel, it can also be enhanced by choosing diamonds for the bezel or the mother-of-pearl dial; and either a leather or stainless steel wristband.

Bright Eyes Inspired by the magnetism, the charisma, and the timeless beauty of the divas, Bulgari creates new handcrafted, one-of-a-kind Diva high jewellery sunglasses. The precious décor of 4.61 carats of pavé diamonds enriches the handcrafted acetate, thought after the pink hues of tourmalines.
The iconic motif of the jewellery Diva collection is being reinterpreted in a contemporary design that creatively evokes the fan-shaped mosaics of the Caracalla Baths in Rome.
The unique colour of the frame is obtained thanks to a special craftsmanship made by two layers of nude rose that disclose a third layer in tourmaline colour.
This unique piece crosses the boundaries between accessory and jewellery, giving vent to an eclectic and feminine creativity, which combines the sparkle of pink gold and diamonds with the refined tones of the acetate. 36

hen you see a faux leather thobe on the plane from Doha to Bahrain, you better believe that leather has become casual wear in the Gulf. Not just for Hell’s Angels or dominatrix, the durable fabric is perfect for desert life (in the winter, that is), as the sand can’t penetrate it, and fits in with the new en vogue minimalism. The key to making it look less Meatloaf and more Kate Moss this season is to keep it casual. Team with loose jumpers and trainers for the ultimate sports casual look with a pop of colour, like red, to add a bit of drama.

What is your ideal day off?
What makes Doha special?
Oh man, it has to be breakfast with the family at the InterContinental Hotel, which offers one of the best breakfast selections in all of Qatar! Followed by relaxing and enjoying a movie on the big screen (at home) with lots of popcorn. This is the best remedy to disconnect from everyone and everything for at least a couple of hours. Then I like to finish the night with family and friends at one of the many wonderful restaurants in Qatar, and you know you can’t forget the shisha (double apple, of course)!
Even though I have lived the majority of my life in Canada, I always considered Qatar my home. It’s my birthplace, it is sunny almost every day and of course, it has two seasons; summer and hot! I left Qatar when I was 8 years old, and I remember the Sheraton Hotel and the infamous Beach Club which was later torn down. It is quite an amazing feat to see Qatar develop and grow the way it has in such little time. I am extremely happy to be back and even more excited to see it continue to develop and positively impact the GCC and the rest of the world.
My secret spots are not so secret, I love any good restaurant, from seafood at Katara, steak at the Renaissance Marriott, Moroccan at the Souq and Turkish dining on the other side of town to please my tastebuds. However, after all that is said and done, driving in Doha is difficult and nothing beats relaxing on a private balcony in The Pearl. There you have the best view of the marina, the city and the rest of Doha, and can enjoy a fine cigar or two.
This month Ohlala! talks to Bishara Hany Awad, the dapper GM of the Beauty Product Division & Retail at Merch to find out about his Doha life…

The Style Diaries
This month, Ohlala! check out the blogging scene. Karen Nicolet takes us through her life as a fashion blogger, and her unique personal style…
Blogger Bio Name Karen Nicolet Profession Marketing Manager at Doha Film Institute Blog clumsychic.com
What makes your blog unique? It’s a visual diary of what inspires me; fashion, family, beauty, travel, and in a way, organisation. I do a lot of how-tos, like how to organise your shoe collection! There’s not a lot of bloggers in Doha, so I try to make my blog very visual, but attainable. I try to inspire people to live an everyday life that’s elevated. I want to tell people that it’s little things that make you happy; little adjustments, like putting on a bright lipstick or arranging flowers in a certain way. I’m not snobbish, like look at my Louis Vuitton bag! I also inject my personality with the way I write - I want to talk to people as if they’re my friends. What’s so special about blogging? I started blogging because I wanted a creative outlet, and to do something inspiring everyday. It’s a great tool to express whatever you’re passionate about. Fashion blogging is from the point of view of regular people, rather than someone in the fashion world who might have 46
OHLALA!
an agenda. There is more credibility. It’s coming from a personal level. What are the key pieces in your wardrobe? Oversized blazers are always something that I go to. In terms of trendy pieces, I like culottes and wide legged pants. What’s your signature style? My style changes regularly, but I would say its “Mick Jagger going to the gym”! I saw Jagger in Dubai this year and he was wearing a red silk tuxe jacket I really wanted. My style is sporty with a bit of rock ‘n’ roll. I gravitate towards structural pieces, rather than clean minimalist. And my style is definitely casual. I stay away from high fashion – it’s so uncomfortable. Who is your favourite fashion designer? I really like Basssique, it’s a Danish brand that’s really basic stuff. It’s really minimal, basic pieces that are quite luxurious. And The Row. I can never afford The Row, but I do love it.
Whose wardrobe do you covet? The Olsen twins. I think I just want to raid their wardrobe, as they have a great eye for vintage pieces and jewellery. And I want access to all their fashion collections! Kate Moss is also good one. What’s your most embarrassing fashion faux pas? Birkenstocks. I used to be really against them, I was a little bit snobbish about them in the beginning and then became the biggest fashion hypocrite as I now own two pairs. I have one in taupe and I just got another pair in black. What is your favourite item for this season? I just bought a Saint Laurent burgundy bag, I really love burgundy this fall, it’s my colour go-to. I’ve been eyeing burgundy bags for a long time, and I’m really picky with bags, in terms of the handle, the strap etc. I’m not a bag person, I’m more of a shoe person. For me, handbags are really functional, it needs to fit really well on my shoulder. What fashion items do you hate? Crocs. I guess I don’t like people who show too much skin, from skinny jeans, to crop tops to backless. I don’t wear mini skirts, ‘cos I can’t pull it off. Shorts are fine, though! www.ohlala-magazine.com

An Open Book Struggling to find a good book in Doha? Thalia Suzuma, the Director of English Publishing of Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing has a couple of recommendations.
I
n a small country like Qatar, where there is a lamentable dearth of bookshops, it may surprise you to learn that a literary scene is taking shape. Slowly but surely, Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) is spearheading the campaign to elevate the important work of writers from the Gulf and across the Arab world, and Middle Eastern fiction. Enter Thalia Suzuma, the Director of English Publishing, who is on a mission to raise public awareness of the diverse and fascinating literature of which the writers in the region are capable and bring them to a global audience. Thalia, who initially embarked on a career as a ballet dancer, worked her way up through publishing houses in the UK, writing reports on the “slush” pile – manuscripts no one has time to read - to become an editor. Her passion for good writing and learning Arabic brought her to BQFP, which publishes books in English and Arabic. For a fairly small and new establishment in Doha, albeit backed by one of the UK’s leading publishing houses, Bloomsbury’s, the recognition it is gaining on an international level is extraordinary. One of its star writers, Mai Al-Nakib was featured in the prestigious Edinburgh Book Festival, where she was nominated for The First Book 48
OHLALA!
“At its heart,” explains Thalia, “Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing is simply about brilliant stories.” Award for her book of short stories “The Hidden Light of Objects”. The output is enormous; BQFP publish a book a month – at least. However, it’s not BQFP’s canny choice of writers or its international pull that will get the bookworms of Doha excited. “At its heart,” explains Thalia, “Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing is simply about brilliant stories.” For anyone who has struggled to find a decent novel in Doha, whether to read by the pool, to take on holiday, or simply for some intellectual stimulation, this is great news.
“Literature is important for so many reasons,” enthuses Thalia. “You can travel without leaving the room; it’s about communication and empathy which is what makes us human. It can show you how you might have lived had you been born somewhere else in a way newspaper headlines just can’t. I don’t just want to read stories by people whose native tongue is the same as my own – how boring!” For more information, visit www.bqfp.com.qa

doha catwalk Ohlala! catches up with Doha’s supermodel, Angelique de Lange on her modelling life. How did you become a model? I dreamed about modelling at a young age, but school and sport were my first priority! When I was 11, I won the chance to attend a ‘’runway school’’ and I fell in love. When I moved to Qatar, I was asked if I was interested in modelling when I was walking in Villaggio one day with my mum. And ta-da! I mostly freelance right now, but I cannot let go of something I enjoy so much!
Mohammed Nairooz
Do people have misconceptions about models? I think that people do! Here in Qatar, modelling is a very different scene; there are more opportunities for a variety of looks and nationalities. But most people still think we have to be super skinny and have no life aside from modelling. They assume you are rude and that they can control you and your schedule, but the truth is, the girls here all balance daily life with work and modelling. We all have a story and we are only human. What kind of preparation do models have to do before a shoot? I take good care of my hair; washing it the morning of the shoot to ensure that my hair is in perfect condition. I moisturise my face (most importantly) and body very well after a shower! The Doha climate has the nasty tendency to dry my skin out in record time. I try to sleep at least seven hours the night before to avoid droopy eyes. I drink tea and lots of water along with fruits to look fresh. And lastly I always do something relaxing - whether it’s reading a book, listening to my favourite song on the way to the shoot or a phone call from a friend, it makes me happy on the inside and that shows on the outside. I concentrate on the small things and because I choose a healthy lifestyle every day, I have implemented these steps into my daily life.
The Closet Herbert Villadelrey
Are you asked your opinion on photoshoots? I absolutely love it when I’m asked my point of view on the creative element of the shoot. Collaborating with the designer and photographer to find new poses or different locations helps the entire team to reach even higher. When everyone is happy at the end of the shoot, it shows directly in the pictures! What’s your personal style? I don’t know if I even have a style! I am not fussy with trying new styles, colours, shapes and fabrics. I do not even consider myself to fashionable. I would describe myself as elegant, classy and sharp. I like to stand out, and I like the attention! Lately, I started painting my nails wacky colours like purple, blue and green. It makes me feel beautiful and special. A lady with selfconfidence is the most attractive thing walking on two legs!

he music industry moves in cycles. It mirrors the seasons in some respects with its changing trends and today’s audiences are perhaps more fickle than any that have preceded them. What is in vogue one week can quickly go out of fashion the next. The internet has played a big part in making as well as breaking careers and the opportunity to reach audiences in new and innovative ways has certainly helped many gain exposure without the need for lucrative contracts or signing to a record label. Emma Stevens started out on the road to her present career with a lot of ability and a head full of music that she felt compelled to share with the world and she made good use of all these facilities as a fledgling artist to achieve the success she enjoys today. “Music has always been the focal point in my life. I knew from an early age that it was what I wanted more than anything but I was level-headed enough to realise that talent alone isn’t always enough in 66

such a competitive market place.” Born in Guildford, England, Emma started playing guitar when she was three years of age, after watching her mother playing. “My mum was an amazing musician. She played Spanish guitar and the first time I saw her doing that I was smitten and just pestered her continuously to learn.” Emma’s parents soon realised that their daughter possessed a unique talent and encouraged her to learn piano and the cello. By the time she was six she had joined a youth orchestra and in her early teens she started writing songs. “I used to write a lot of melodies on the piano by this time and I was really into writing poetry as well – I even had a poem published in a national competition – so combining my words with my music just seemed the natural thing to do. “It probably seems an obvious thing to say but life shapes the songs I write and most of my
experiences are reflected in my music. When I was 17 I was dumped by my boyfriend at the time and that episode later became the inspiration for my song, How To Write A Love Song, which appeared on my first solo EP.” From 2006 to 2007, Emma attended the distinguished Academy of Contemporary Music and graduated with a Diploma in Guitar and Contemporary Performance. After a period of writing, session gigs and national tours with the likes of Incubus, The Kooks and Feeder, Emma decided it was time to step out on her own and her biggest supporter towards this ambition was her mother, Tina. “In early 2012 my mum was diagnosed with cancer but she tried as much as possible to deflect my focus away from her illness and on progressing my career. She played an active part in my development and everything about what www.ohlala-magazine.com

became my debut album, Enchanted, is built up from the fabric of my mum. “She designed the cover artwork for all four of my EPs and when you put them together they formed the entire cover of Enchanted.” Such was the aggressiveness of her mother’s illness that on March 26, 2012, Tina Stevens passed away. “It was the saddest day of my life. For all her support, encouragement and love my mother never got to see the finished product although everything about it was inspired by her.” The single, Riptide, went on to be a huge European success and provided her with the opportunity to tour in her own right in support of the new album. “I love being on tour and engaging with my fans. It is the most amazing experience to see people touched by your music and have them tell you it makes a difference to their lives.” As we speak I can see the enthusiasm and excitement in Emma so it came as no surprise to learn that she started her second album, which is due out later this year, only two weeks after she completed, Enchanted. “The new album is entitled Waves and it reflects my emotions, events in my life and of course my huge love of the sea. The first single, Make My Day, was inspired by a friend’s break-up. The video was huge fun to make and I actually did three different versions of it, with one filmed in a tiny light aircraft where I am playing guitar and singing thousands of feet in the air!”
So did she suffer any challenges or that dreaded “second-album” syndrome? “Not at all. I’m quite a spiritual person and very optimistic. I think it helps to be that way. You see the world in a different light. I didn’t have any concerns about writing and if anything, my confidence was sky-high and the ideas just kept on coming! “And as well as for myself I do it for my wonderful fans. To know that there are people out there who appreciate what you are doing and want you to do more of it is incredible! What could possibly be difficult about that?” With such a focused outlook, does she have time to detach from her career? “I don’t really see what I do as work so it never feels forced or challenging. However, I have other interests outside of music and my big passion is surfing. I love the sea. I also really love nature and just taking a walk in the woods keeps me grounded and makes me realise that life is multi-faceted and not just about one thing. “As a Taurus I am pretty down to earth and I love to cook. Sushi and Italian food are some of my favourites.” So what does bring her down? “I have a pet hate in that people today don’t really appreciate or use the English language as it should be used. I guess technology has contributed to that – texting and tweeting have allowed language to evolve in a different direction to an extent – but it isn’t necessarily always a good thing. “I also wish I wasn’t so clumsy! I often break at least one thing a day but then no one is perfect I guess!”

Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience 2014
V
Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience is back! Catwalks, exhibitions, workshops and most importantly, cutting edge fashion will take over Dubai Mall from the 30th of October to the 1st of November.
ogue Italia is known for its inimitable style. When the magazine’s peerless editor, Franca Sozzani launched Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience last year with Dubai Mall, everyone in the fashion world took note. The lucky up-and-coming designers featured in the catwalk have gone on to reach staggering heights and the mall filled up with fashionistas from all over the region, who enjoyed the exhibitions and mall discounts. It showed the world that the Middle East could compete with the Fashion Weeks of Europe and the USA, and that we have a lot of talent here that’s going unnoticed. But not for much longer. This year it’s set to be bigger and

better. The concept behind VFDE is unique: to give burgeoning international designers a platform in the region to showcase their creations. This year, BySymphony.com launched a competition and designers applied to have their women’s and accessories S/ S2015 collection held at the Armani Hotel. 20 designers from all over the world were chosen, four of which are from the Arab world, to feature in the “International Talents Showcase”. In addition to this, Vogue Italia has chosen eight new international designers to feature in “The Dubai Mall Catwalk” on October 30. Ohlala! investigates to bring you the things you need to know about these up-and-coming Arab designers. www.ohlala-magazine.com
FEATURE ASUDAMI After studying at Central Saint Martins of London, and working at the esteemed Alexander McQueen, Lamia Asudami launched her own label in London. The native Saudi Arabian’s SS2015 collection is an “aesthetic cultural trance”. Inspired by both KSA and London’s distinct style, Asudami’s signature is digitally printed geometric patterns, as well as the exquisite beading that was inspired by Saudi craftsmanship.
SHAMSA ALABBAR Showcasing her jewellery, Alabbar’s brand is only one year old but she has already been exhibiting at events like Design Days 2014. The young Emirati has a background in graphic design, which you can see in her work; her jewellery may be inspired by Arabic calligraphy, but there is a structural, geometric and thoroughly modern aesthetic to her creations.
ENDEMAGÉ Sisters Nadia and Lubna Al Zakwani head up the Omani brand ENDEMAGÉ. Their talent is homegrown in the UAE itself, as Lubna studied Fashion Design and Pattern Drafting at ESMOD fashion school in Dubai. Their collection was inspired by Zanzibar, and focuses on pastel colours, structured silhouettes and soft patterns.
HOOKED/HKD Farah Nasri’s creations marry on-trend minimalism with extravagance to create a fantasy jewellery collection. The architecture graduate, who is inspired by mythology and history, has sourced her materials from all over the world, using gold leaf from her native Lebanon, pearls from Japan and 3D prints from New York.

FEATURE REEM AL KANHAL Joining the Saudi Arabia tradition of female fashion designers who defy all stereotypes, Al Kanhal’s designs are imbued with her strong personality. The graduate of The Art and Skills Institute in Riyadh’s collection “Window to the Soul” is both distinctly futuristic and flamboyant, with an emphasis on bright colours and animal imagery.
MADIYAL AL SHARQI Al Sharqi is a graduate in Fashion Design and Pattern Making from ESMOD, Dubai, as well as a finalist of the Woolmark Prize and winner of “Best Fashion Designer” at the Arab Woman Awards. The 70s inspired her collection; building about the decade’s staple colours like beige and khaki with lavender and peach, and textures like embroidered lace and flowery jacquards, she looks to a modern femininity.
N°3 DESIGN Co-founded by Bushra Badri and Amira Alkhaja, this homegrown Dubai label is sophistication personified; personified by oversized pieces, muted tones and structure. Designing pieces fascinates the duo, a process they find architectural. Their mission is to accentuate technique and functionality, while still maintaining their haute standards. www.vfdebyemaar.com

Apply foundation with a sponge to even out the skin tone – less is more. 3. Dab your face lightly with compact powder immediately after applying your foundation to give a nice matte finish. 4. To get that perfect contour, put some bronzer on, making sure to choose the right shade. 5. Choose a pink blusher and apply it gently on the apples of your cheeks. 6. For your eyeshadow, choose a shade that matches your outfit. In Alessandra’s case, she blends rosy and tan shades off the palette. 7. Use a brow pencil to define your eye brows. SPORTY
SEXY GLAM Designer Michael Kors’ inimitable vision for beauty comes to life with his global beauty lifestyle collection. A collection exquisitely crafted to reflect the many facets and moods of his ideal woman. Ohlala! brings you the exclusive story from Mr Michael Kors himself. What inspired the direction of MK Collection? Why SPORTY SEXY GLAM? Michael Kors. My inspiration comes from the women in my life. I’ve always been interested in their layers. For instance, my mom was usually sporty. She always had a suntan and she never spent more than two minutes on her makeup before she was out the door. My grandmother was a bit glam. She was an indulgent fragrance user. It was always in her bath, on her wrists, behind her ears. The collection is more than a trend. It’s about mood. For me, the Michael Kors woman has three main moods – Sporty, Sexy and Glam. Sometimes you want to feel sporty and effortless; sometimes you want to be glamorous and indulgent; and sometimes you want to be unabashedly sexy. Most women have all three inside of them. And sometimes they turn the volume up or down on one of those three elements, depending on the mood or the moment. 82
OHLALA!
www.ohlala-magazine.com
BEAUTY What is sporty? MK. There’s something about a woman who is active and a part of the world. She pulls her hair loosely into a ponytail, whether she is playing tennis, walking the red carpet or at the office. It’s a relaxed yet colourful approach to living. I think of women like Gwyneth Paltrow pulling their hair into a simple ponytail on the red carpet. It’s all about ease. What is sexy? MK. It’s not obvious or overdone. It’s about confidence. Everything is effortless and sensual. Sexy is about knowing yourself well. Angelina Jolie has that strong, confident attitude from every day to the red carpet. What is glam? MK. Glam is a little bit of indulgence and a lot of attitude. When a woman is feeling glam, she wants to give a little bit more effort to making a statement. She has a bravado that catches every eye in the room. Jennifer Lopez exemplifies modern glamour in every situation. What role does fragrance play in your collection? MK. This collection is centred on my fragrances, which are the most intimate thing I create. I’ve always been fascinated by the strong connection between scent and memory. For me, fragrance evokes a moment that is connected to a feeling. When I started developing these fragrances, I wanted to take the scents that spoke to me and combine them in a way that would let women easily express themselves.
“Sometimes Sporty. Always Sexy. And never afraid to be Glam. Three individual fragrances take the Michael Kors woman from weekend chic to centre stage.”
What is your most important beauty tip? MK. Makeup should not be a mask. The SPORTY SEXY GLAM woman exudes an easy, carefree beauty that looks like it took about two seconds. Don’t cover the texture of your skin. It should glow. This collection gives you that effect – it’s easy and attainable. Will we see the sporty, sexy, and glam moods in your fashion line? MK. Absolutely. These are inherent feminine moods that always shape my collections. What is your advice on the best head-to-toe looks for each of a woman’s moods? MK. Sporty is the perfect on-the-go, got-to-get-there-fast look. It’s all about cool, casual pieces that have a bit of edge, like perforated accessories, great sneakers and a leather moto jacket and lots of cosy, sexy knits. Sexy means taking everything up a notch. It’s a cocktail dress that hugs the curves, sky-high heels and a strut in the step. The sexiest women I know are the ones that ooze confidence, so I love accessories that express that, like an oversized watch or a python bag. They really up the sex appeal. Glam is so much fun to dress for and is the ideal look for evening. I’d go for a sleek dress, embellished heels, a darker lip and a metallic clutch. Pile on the jewellery too – what could be more glamorous? What is your view of beauty around the world? MK. I travel a lot and whether I’m in Hong Kong or LA, the most beautiful women are always the ones who have confidence in their style and makeup that illuminates their own natural beauty. If you are confident, you’ll look fantastic. That’s universal.

Free Your Mind With aspirations to inspire women everywhere to take risks, live freely and continue to challenge the norm, IFF Perfumer Bruno Jovanovic debuts the new fragrance in GUESS Parfums portfolio: GUESS Dare. What was your main inspiration for this fragrance? Bruno Jovanovic. Thelma and Louise and the idea of a road trip somewhere in the mid-west. What type of girl/woman do you envision wearing GUESS Dare? Bold, free-spirited and sexy. Can you tell us about the various ingredients and the roles they play? In the top I played up some crisp citrus green notes for freshness and naturality blending kumquat and pear together. The heart of the fragrance is a blend of natural and wild floral notes to express a free spirited femininity: Sambac jasmine and rose convey floral petally nuances with an element of sophistication and unexpected: The Living Cactus Flower has been captured in dry surroundings of the Palm Springs region. It has a green mineral facet blending seamlessly with other floral notes. Sensual woody notes complete the fragrance for a seductive trail and skin-like feeling. What makes GUESS Dare unique and different from other fragrances on the market? Guess Dare is classified as a 84

BEAUTY
green fruity floral. It has a fresh green departure from the rest of the current Guess feminine portfolio and builds further the offering for a daring Guess consumer. Please describe the fragrance in three words. Airy, refreshing, sexy casual. If Guess DARE were an accessory or piece of clothing, what would it be? It could be a customised vintage stone-washed denim piece with embroidery.
“Dare to be bold, dare to be different.”
What does the GUESS brand mean to you? Guess symbolises a timeless sexy spirit. Do you have any tips for women when it comes to picking the right fragrance for specific occasions? A fragrance like Guess Dare could be worn throughout the day as it has both a casual feel with sexy undertone. Otherwise, I would recommend having a fresher scent for the day and one a bit more daring and sophisticated with richer floral and woody notes for the evening to complement the style of the evening. What are the current trends in fragrance? We still see a dichotomy between fresh citrus and blond wood fragrances and ones that are more Oriental.
What is your first olfactive memory? I remember, very early on, spending hours in my parents’ bedroom, smelling my mother’s fragrances. I guess I missed her while she was working, and smelling L’Air du Temps or Caleche always brought me closer to her. Which of your other four senses has the greatest impact on your work? It’s very difficult to pick one. There is so much creative material to be taken from all our senses that I would be limiting myself if I had a favourite… Do you have any advice/hints about how to apply perfume? I always enjoy smelling the trail of a beautiful fragrance from the hair of a beautiful woman. But everything works, hair, neck, wrist and even the back of the knees in summer.
How/when did you decide to become a perfumer? I was a child, I knew I loved odours and fragrances. It came just so naturally that I always find it hard to explain. www.ohlala-magazine.com

riving around Doha is never a walk in the park, which is why you have to choose your vehicle with the utmost care. Your car becomes your second skin, in which you navigate the mean streets of Qatar’s capital, and while you may not be dodging bullets, you will be evading the erratic “driving” of people whose idea of road safety may not exactly conform to your exacting standards. This month, we cast our sharp eyes over the 2014 Lexus RX 350. With its tall roofline,

smooth silhouette and roomy interior, this is a comfortable, understated, luxury SUV. Stepping into the RX is easy as the sides are not too high (something you’ve got to think about when you’re rocking stilettos), which is great; sliding in and out is also assisted by a power seat and steering wheel that automatically adjusts to create more space. It has keyless entry and start, and a poweroperated lift gate, which makes life easier. In the 21st century, www.ohlala-magazine.com

keys are redundant; soon cars will be able to recognise our fingerprints! It’s surprisingly quiet inside the Lexus. The RX’s engine sports a 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, which gives a supremely quiet and smooth ride. Watching your speed is no trouble at all with the very clever windshield display. There is no need to be constantly looking down at the dials; you can keep your eyes on the road and your speed at the same time (very handy for avoiding any speeding with all the new speed cameras popping up around Doha!) The interior feels sporty with touches of silver and a great panoramic sunroof giving a level of understated luxury. The standard RX also comes with Bluetooth, ten-way power front seats, dual-zone climate control and a 12-speaker audio system! Perfect for talking on the phone with clients, or turning up the music when you’re roaring along the road with your friends. Versatile seating makes it very roomy and accommodating for the whole family to fit in comfortably, a great bonus feature is that the back seats partially recline, perfect for snoozing little ones after a big day out. The rear seats are also contoured for adult-sized passengers, and also flip forward when you need

a fantastic range of safety features - ten airbags, side bags for the rear seats, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes, a hill-hold function, the rearview camera and blind spot detection. Among the RX’s many advanced-tech accident-avoidance features are a Pre-Collision System that uses radar sensors to detect a possible impact, then readies the brakes and seatbelts for an imminent crash. Very clever, and it gives you a feeling of safety. It’s good to be reassured on these dangerous roads. Overall, this is a fantastic family car with good looks, safety, easy driving, with plenty of room and features to keep everyone happy. It’s a thumbs up from us!

The Square One of the biggest restaurants in Doha, The Square in the InterContinental the City is celebrating the much-maligned German food for the entire month of October, so if you miss out on Oktoberfest, then this is the place for you. On the lunch buffet you will find traditional favourites such as sauerbraten, schupfnudeln and brathering that will put to right any prejudices you had about Deutsch cuisine, and are also hugely fun to say. But the grub is, after all, just an accompaniment to the delicious magic that the Germans wield over their breweries. To book a table, call 4015 8888. 90

This month you’re going to have to loosen your belt, as October turns out to be the month of eating; foodies rejoice! Not only is it Hallowe’en, Oktoberfest and Eid Al Adha, but also the hotels have decided to go all international and bring us the best and most delicious food from around the world. Hurray! The diet starts next month.
Sharq Village If you’re a bit bored by German cuisine at this point (how could you be?) then head on over to Sharq Village for something different. While all the other hotels are putting on an Oktoberfest that will have you searching for a new liver on the black market, Sharq Village is offering a Turkish festival. Turkish cuisine is a fusion of Middle Eastern, Central Asian and Balkan flavours, combining to make some of the best loved dishes, and is universally adored. Those Turkish chefs know what they’re doing. For only QR 250, try out iskander and borek at Al Liwan Restaurant, from 26th of October the 31st of October from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm. For more information, call 4425 6666.
The Marriot Salsa, the best Tex mex in town, has just relaunched! One of Doha’s most colourful restaurants just had a makeover, as well as menu re-jig. Salsa’s newest item to the menu is chicken wings so spicy that they will blow your socks off. We’re talking some serious “wing sting”. Do you think you’re game? All the usual
favourites are there, like succulent fajitas and juicy guacamole, as well as some new contenders. Mexican food is as vibrant, colourful and fun as its culture; as well as being delicious and surprisingly healthy. Also, if it’s your birthday, they have been known to place a sombrero upon your head. Call 4429 8888 to book a table.
Mövenpick Hotel Doha There is really nothing better than Asian street food, so luckily for the people of Doha, the Mövenpick Hotel Doha is launching its first ASEAN street food celebration from the 19th to the 26th of October. Helped out by their respective embassies, there will authentic dishes from Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. There will be live outdoor cooking station and on the opening night, Qatar Airways and the Mövenpick Hotel Doha will be giving the lucky guests a chance to win a weeklong trip to Dubai to stay in one of the Dubai Mövenpicks. For more information, call 4429 1111.
Oryx Rotana
The Cellar is renowned for its delicious Spanish food, and the good people at the Oryx Rotana are taking it to the next level. Celebrity Spanish Chef Javier Ponte Taky has worked out the perfect balance of flavours in food and beverage to create an authentic and first-class dining experience. We’re talking paella and fideua dishes made from seasonal ingredients, accompanied by the finest Rioja money can buy. For one week only, The Cellar is having a Spanish extravaganza, with events like “Tap-brunch”, a curious mixture of tapas and brunch (but sadly no tap dancing), two “Pintxos Nights”, which involves delicious Spanish cheese, and “A Taste of Galicia” in which you are taken on a culinary journey to a gastronomic paradise. The top artistic endeavours in October Jazz in the Park 22nd October, MIA Park It’s one of Doha’s best-kept secrets – except that it shouldn’t be! Once a month, the jazz musicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center at the St Regis take their instruments and pop over to the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) park to give an al fresco concert. Given that the MIA park is a little piece of paradise in this dusty peninsula of ours, sheltered as it is from the noise and right besides the water, going to hear the extremely talented jazz musicians is a must. Doha’s art scene is off the hook. For a small country, Qatar certainly punches above its weight and makes international news headlines. One of Doha’s best independent art spaces is Anima Gallery, an intimate haven for the artistically minded.
The Park Bazaar 1st November, MIA Park In the grounds of the MIA, a modern day Souq Waqif is held on the first Saturday of every month. During the hot months of the summer, the bazaar is closed, but luckily it’s coming back very soon! The Park Bazaar is where all the craftsman and artists of Doha gather to sell their work. You can find anything from jewellery, postcards, and clothes to artisanal food. It’s incredibly popular; strolling through the stalls looking for a gift or just window-shopping makes for a perfect weekend activity. 92

Chamber Music at Katara Esplanade: Music of the Gulf 29th October, Katara The fact that Doha has its own Philharmonic Orchestra is quite amazing. There are 101 musicians from all over the world, who put on a weekly concert for the masses. That is somewhat of a mean feat; but to top off their output, they are world-class good; quantity and quality. The orchestra doesn’t just play classical music from the West however; they are always very keen to extend their repertoire and reach to include music from the Arab world.

nima Gallery at The Pearl is one of the most interesting galleries on Doha’s art scene, and it is also a trendy café. The trendy art space is a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon, perusing the art and consuming the caffeine. Run by Ghada Sholy, the curator has her finger on the pulse and always brings in the best and most engaging artists to exhibit in her intimate gallery. Fernando Botero, a figurative artist and sculptor from Colombia, who is best known for his voluptuous female figures, is a well-known figure in Latin America. What’s on? The Sound of Music Possibly the most beloved musical of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s pre-war classic “The Sound of Music” is coming to Doha’s capital for six performances only!
E
Qatar International Boat Show Surrounded by water as we are, it would be silly not to have a means of transport for the open seas. Qatar’s exciting boat show can help with that. Have you ever wanted to own a superyacht? To be quaffing bubbly while whizzing into the bay at Monaco, your butler offering up some foie gras on a silver platter while the reflection of your yacht, “Maestro 45” glistens in the azure waters? These dreams are closer than you think. The Qatar International Boat Show (QIBS) is back in town this November, where more megayachts than you can shake a stick at will be setting anchor at the glamorous Lusail Marine. If “Maestro 45” is somewhat out of your budget, then pop down for a day of seeing how the other half lives, and maybe indulge in buying a jetski or two instead.
veryone knows all the songs; growing up it was impossible to escape them, not that you would want to. Ohlala!’s personal favourite is Maria’s solo, “I have Confidence”, an anthem for anyone who has experience some self doubt, but it’s hard to choose from such classics as “My Favourite Things”, “Do Re Mi” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”. Based on a true story, The Sound of Music is about an unruly novice nun called Maria, who is sent off to become a governess for the myriad children of the stern but very handsome, Captain Von Trapp. Winning over the bratty children with song and gumption, the feisty Maria soon captures the heart of Von Trapp himself. However, Austria is on the eve of war and Von Trapp, a war hero from The Great War, is not about to let himself be bullied by the evil Nazis. It’s a heart-warming tale, full of incredibly catchy songs. Who would have thought a musical about nuns and Nazis would ever be so popular? Playing in the Qatar National Convention Centre in the 2300 seat state of the art theatre, the musical is bound to be the highlight of the Doha calendar. The cast have come all the way from London’s West End, and returning to the lead role of Maria is Lucy Hunter James, who won critical acclaim in both Dubai and Bahrain. With lavish costumes, beautiful sets and of course, a stunning live orchestra, “The Sound of Music” is not something you should miss out on.

HAPPENINGS
The DJ is in the House DJ Brandon Block is playing for one night, and one night only at Coco Latte at Rocca in the Grand Hyatt Doha. First of all, Brandon Block is his real name. With a name like that, he was born to stand out and Block’s career, which has taken him all over the world, doing DJ residencies in places from Hong Kong to Las Vegas, is quite crazy. He started out in London, over 25 years ago, playing funk and soul and ended up being christened the Godfather of Ibiza. That’s some trajectory! And now he’s in Doha! Good house music in Qatar is hard to come by, so having a TV personality like Block for one night only, on Thursday the 23rd of October, is kind of a big deal. Kick off your weekend with the inimitable sounds of disco, funk, house and of course, the house classics that we all know and love. Be warned, no matter how worn out the week has made you, DJ Block will get you on your feet, and dancing like there is no tomorrow.

HEY IT’S OK IF… …you put on the Doha seven (pounds? Kilos? Stone?!) within months of moving here. Silver lining; that’s just another excuse for a shopping trip! You need more clothes! …you’re not 100% sure how to parallel park. I mean, why bother when everywhere you go has valet? #Clueless #90sFilms ….you brunch every Friday. You’re a creature of habit, ok? …you’ve started using “brunch” as a verb. Language is supposed to evolve. Ahem. …you annoy relatives in colder climes by complaining about Doha’s perpetual heat. Insensitive, moi? They don’t know our pain! …you class Instagram as a hobby. After all, your latest filter was an act of genius.
