Welcome 2015!

After the long hiatus of a well-deserved holiday break, I hope you’ve all had a pleasant time with your loved ones. If you happened to stay in Doha, like myself, I hope the nice, chilly weather was a plus for your holiday adventures. Now that we’re back on track with a new year and new resolutions to look forward to, it’s time to welcome new and exciting lifestyle guidelines that I am proud to share with you on this January’s edition. Busy month indeed, from the impeccable presentation of Céline’s Spring 2015 collection hosted at Villaggio Mall to the new opening of the MINI Showroom in Doha. On this brand new edition, it’s all about Arab businesswomen and we couldn’t have been more excited to have Dana Al- Fardan on board— where she talks about her latest passion, inspirations and much more! Ohlala! Qatar also sat down with artist, Katie Smiles, where she spilled some secrets on being a DJ and her latest gig taking place in Qatar. If you’re more of a traveling person, we have the perfect travel feature for you, transporting you all the way to Larnaca, Cyprus; an enchanting and mesmerizing place worth reading about. For those who are into beauty, like myself, we’ve got the perfect ‘how to get the look’ beauty tips from our young and fresh beauty editorial! Take a seat and a cup of coffee and enjoy what’s to come… Sofia Graniello Acting- Editor

Mother

Earth

Nature, particularly animals, insects and flowers, has challenged goldsmiths and jewelers for millennia; each generation aims to capture the transient beauty of the natural world in its own language and style‌ When De Grisogono interprets nature, it is always highly stylised, unsentimental, inspired by form, shape and silhouette, by character, and as in Gocce, fluid, tactile and sculptural. Fawaz Gruosi has captured the sense of surging, unstoppable growth, the simplicity of a swollen flowerbud, bursting with new life, and the sensuality of the drop, a quintessential, archetypal natural form. The drop shapes, impeccably sculpted in gold, some smothered in diamonds, or hand carved from precious gemstones, are perfectly proportioned, and massed closely together, with the randomness of nature, to sweep around the finger. This year, the Gocce collection grows and flourishes, with a series of spectacular and timelessly elegant rings in new materials and colour combinations, smooth and glossy carved emerald and amethyst, white diamonds and black quartz, white diamonds and turquoise, pink gold with amethyst, or pink gold, with drops highlighted in rich brown gold, a De Grisogono signature.

A symbol of purity, the camellia flower embodies and resonates Mademoiselle Chanel’s intimate surroundings. A flower with utter simplicity and impeccable elegance is not only CHANEL’S signature look, but embodies the spirit of CHANEL throughout the world. Geometrical contours, immaculate white, petals displayed in a classical alignment: the camellia is a flower which blossoms in CHANEL fine jewellery.

BOTTEGA VENETA For Cruise 2015, Bottega Veneta presents a collection that emphasises painterly colours, fluid lines and intriguing dying and bleaching techniques. The result is looks that are relaxed and unselfconscious in appearance, yet on closer inspection reveal unusual craftsmanship. The palette is dominated by pastels inspired by the frescoes of Tiepolo, as if by accident, there are also touches of brights and darks. Silhouettes are easy and unconstrained. Lengths vary from short to long, depending on the allure. Materials are lightweight and transitional. 36

Style interview

Meet the woman behind Jo La Mode. Jawaher al-Kuwari reveals to Ohlala! Qatar what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur in the fashion industry. What drove you to start a fashion boutique? It was a dream to see the Qatari/GCC designers and brands treated importantly like any international brand, where they have the chance to stock and participate in events and fashion shows. What inspires you daily? The faces and expressions I see and feel on daily basis is what inspires me. Favorite Fashion designer (local, or GCC)? You will see my favourite brands at Jo La Mode. I don’t have any specifications. My favourites keep on changing. What does it take to be a businesswoman? The ability to multi-task, as life and careers always demand more. Having confidence in yourself and your abilities is essential on becoming a successful businesswoman. People will view you as you portray yourself. If you project confidence, people will believe that you are confident. In order to reach the top, you need to be passionate about what you do. Think about it, it’s so much easier to motivate yourself to work hard when you’re energized and excited by what you’re doing. You need also to know how to discover opportunities the courage of grapping those chances that could be sometimes hard to get, truth is it’s just out there and needs a strong confident person to take over it. How would you describe your style? I’m more of a modern, contemporary person with a touch of classic. What is the secret for a retailing business? The secret of retailing business depends on two things: choosing your location, which is the most important step on making your dream of owning a retail store come true. Selecting merchandise for your store, which can be the most time-consuming and expensive part of opening a business. The secret of retailing business is the brand itself. It’s necessary to know how to deal, manage and select the designs that you wish to reflect as the store’s image. And honestly with a young market of designers it’s a tedious process of mentoring before stocking and then later when you stock you have to keep the consulting and mentoring ongoing. How would you describe fashion in Doha? There are plenty of people in Doha who come from all over the world, so there’s a mixture of different cultural backgrounds. A lot of people merge their modern twists into their traditional clothing, which can be very cool. Whereas the locals nowadays are opting for colorful abayas with elaborated embellishments and are customizing it to their own taste. Shoes and bags play a huge role into their style, too. Could you tell us a little bit about Jo La Mode? Jo La Mode is a women’s wear boutique showcasing innovative, forward thinking designers and brands committed to traditional, yet modern sustainable fashion. Your favorite trends at the moment? I am obsessed with pockets at the moment. It gives a chic touch to your complete look especially for Arab ladies. What can we expect from Jo La Mode for 2015? Jo La Mode will be bringing out handpicked unique and trendsetting brands. You will see unique collaboration and international approaches.

Style blogger

BONJOUR CHIARA

Chiara Amodeo runs Bonjour Chiara, a blog about fashion based in Doha.

Why did you start a blog?

I just moved to Doha from Italy where I used to be a fashion brand manager and I needed a hobby. Within a few months I started being invited to events, and brands started contacting me. Brands in Italy are interested in this market and so I’m a link between Europe and the Middle East. What do you think of the fashion scene here? The fashion market is not very developed yet. There are a lot of mono and luxury brands, but a lot of contemporary brands are missing. I’m not talking about only European brands, from the States and also Australia – Australian brands are so popular in the fashion industry right now. The reason for that is Doha is a mix of people, the locals and the expats, so it’s really important for the brand to be popular and established for the locals to be interested. How do you see your blog evolving? It was just a hobby for the first month or so and now, it’s a business. It’s easier here than in Europe because there are less bloggers. At the same time, the concept of blogs is not popular yet and brands aren’t as focused on partnerships with bloggers. Everything is changing very quickly in Doha, though. The blog is only the platform; from there you build up your brand. My brand and my blog 46

OHLALA!

are growing and I hope to reach the level of Dubai, Kuwait and European bloggers. As an expat, I could leave at any time, and a blog means my work is mobile. It’s not about the expat life; it’s about fashion so I can write about that anywhere! What’s the most rewarding part of your blog? Meeting people; when I came to Doha, I knew no one. My husband works six days a week, twelve hours a day, but thanks to the blog, I started getting in touch with people, going to events and now it’s girls’ nights out. All my friendships came from my blog! The most popular part of my blog is Mrs B – she is my avatar that I dress up in my dream outfits. She’s really popular on Instagram too and lot’s of people always tell me that the first thing they do in the morning is check what she’s wearing on Instagram! Where did the name Bonjour Chiara come from? The name of the blog was born from my tattoo. I got the tattoo two years ago; I was looking for a quote that means something and I found this image on Pinterest. I don’t speak French, but I love Paris. I like “bonjour” because it means good morning but also good day, which is a nice talisman. How would you describe your personal style? Girlie and funky. I follow trends but I’m not a fashion victim. Culottes and white trousers are really popular now, but I’ve been wearing them for five years because it works for me. I love mixing colours, I can’t imagine just wearing all black. I get more inspiration from France than Italy. My favourite brands are Sandro Paris, Petite Bateau for classic t-shirts, and Celine and from Italy I love Max & Co, I love Vanessa Bruno, from the US I like the Band of Outsiders. www.bonjourchiara.com www.ohlala-magazine.com

Celebrity Scoop

Interview with

Dana Al-Fardan Dana Al-Fardan talks to Ohlala! Qatar on her passion for music, her career and her new focus—songwriting! Take a peek on what this beautiful, driven, young woman has to share… When did you realise that you are a creative person? I always felt I was creative. I just didn’t know that anyone else thought so until recently. Although, it must be said that from the very early stages, people caught on to the fact that I was not very technical or scientifically orientated (bringing all the more irony to the fact that I am a gemologist.) I remember a point in school - I must have been around 8 or 9 - when I couldn’t count backwards, and everyone was convinced that I was making it up to get out of doing my homework. Meanwhile, I was busy composing a response to Beethoven’s Fur Elise. I had read about the song and didn’t understand what the big deal about Elise was, so I decided to respond to that with a piece called “not for Elise”. I had this whole mad scientist aura about me, I was very excited when it was done. When it comes to singing and writing music, what comes first for you? What is your creative process? It was always the melody. The words can only be formed when there is a rhythmic structure in my mind for the sentence to follow. There is an overarching idea that is developed only when I have a melody to guide the way it is transmitted, so I would typically be sitting at the piano (or if i’m outdoors then with a guitar.) What made you decide to stop singing and focus on songwriting? How does it feel to hear other people singing your songs? Well, it has to be noted that I never intended singing to be a part of my musical journey. I decided to sing in order to launch my album and launch myself into the world of music and establish my credibility as a musician and my commitment to music. Also, given that singing is largely viewed as controversial in this region, I hoped that my singing would break the stereotype of singers, leave a good example for other budding local and regional musicians. Now that my album is out, I need to continue to contribute to music in the way that I know best, and that is writing. My decision to stop singing is for the good of the music. I prefer to focus and grow with my songwriting than to dedicate so much time and energy to something that was never a part of where I wanted to reach musically. I want to develop my songwriting and expand its reach and scope. Hearing other people sing my songs is always surreal, I’m always like how do you know the lyrics? What does it feel like, working with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at the Katara Opera House? It is one of my biggest possible dream come true! I can’t even begin to form the words to describe how excited I am, never mind the words. As it is, I get goosebumps when I hear a live performance by a band of 48

“I am a Qatari musician and that means something to me. It means that I want to bring something back to my country, that has given me so much.”

musicians of that size and standard, I don’t even know how to imagine hearing them play my songs! The concert is on February 21st at the Katara Opera House and I can’t wait! Does your Qatari/Arab culture and heritage, have a big influence on your songwriting? Culture and heritage cannot be separated from the artistic process. In my album, Paint, the main theme was centred around the idea that each of the segments that comprise the whole is just as important as the whole entity. The only way to understand who we are as individuals is to pick apart the different components that compose the whole of us, or the layers of “paint” that compose the whole picture. For me, very large components of what drives me is derived from my culture and heritage. It presents the way in which I express myself as an individual, it’s what sets me apart. I’m not just a musician, I am a Qatari musician and that means something to me. It means that I want to bring something back to my country, that has given me so much. That is why when I was on stage for the launch of my album, I was dressed in a traditional clothing, it wasn’t about making a statement it is just about representing who I am. Launching your own music label is a huge move. What is your end goal? Yes it’s a huge move, but I never thought twice about it, it always felt right. Moreover, that’s the structure I felt would be perfectly suited to realise my goals as a supporter of music and as a musician. Launching my music label is about a devotion to quality music. My taste in music is very diverse and at the core is just the strength of music as art form, be that in the form of great timeless melodies or incredible writing, and that is what I want to bring to the public. I’m proud to announce that I have recently signed my first artist, Ryan O’Reilly to my label. He is an outstanding singer/songwriter, which a literary background whom I personally equate to Bob Dylan. That is the standard of music I will commit to supporting. We have recently released his EP “Northern Lights” on iTunes, off the back of a successful European tour, and we are currently recording the album with our team in London. I’m very excited about the outcome. Has your fame surprised you? Fame? What? I don’t know, I’m just incredibly happy that people seem to like the music that I have put out. What advice would you have for someone who wants to become a singer? I would say believe in what you do and be true to yourself. Don’t ever lose track of your objectives, whether that is to play music, to sing, or to compose. 50

OHLALA!

What can we expect next from you? Well, time will tell. Next big thing to look out for is the show in February, the release of Ryan O’Reilly’s album, and maybe the introduction of a new artist —I’m on the lookout for a locally based one. What music do you like? Which artists and bands do you keep going back to? Like I said, my musical influences are very diverse. They range from Fairuz, to Bach, to Red Hot Chilli Peppers, to Bob Dylan, to Guns N Roses, to BB King and from time to time I like a little Bluegrass. Who doesn’t though right? I’m sure everyone kinda does just a little bit, but its usually a secret and we pretend we don’t like any of that banjo bashing but we really love it, don’t we? www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY

Keep eyes soft & light.

It all starts with great skin.

Cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturising – all contribute to making your skin glow. Borrow this makeup look from Jennifer by first using a primer and then opting for a liquid lightweight foundation, which still provides the right coverage.

Go with bold brows.

Using an applicator or brush instead of a pencil, will give you strong brows without looking too harsh.

Go for a delicate peachy shade applied lightly into the crease to complete this minimal makeup look. Use a brush that’s not too dense or it’ll deposit too much product.

Lash up subtly.

Finish with a mascara that provides definition (instead of volume). Curl your lashes first to open up your eyes subtly.

Au Naturel

Contour the face, so you don’t look washed out.

Use a bronzer or face powder that’s two to three shades darker than your skin tone. Contour towards the back of the cheeks, sweeping the brush backwards, just under the cheekbone. 64

Katie White talks the Ting Tings As one half of award-winning duo, The Ting Tings, Katie White is no stranger to fame. With the release of their third album, Super Critical, Ohlala!’s Ben Whittaker caught up with the artist to discuss music, life and how to still be successful in an ever-evolving industry.

F

ounded back in 2007 following a series of earlier collaborations, The Ting Tings was the brainchild of musicians Katie White and Jules Martino. Katie had been working as a bartender at a venue called The Mill and Jules was producing tracks for a number of different artists at the time they decided to form the band. Says Katie, “ We were influenced by many of the artists we heard at The Mill and I think that helped shape the sound of the Ting Tings.” So where did they get the name from? “Ting Ting was the name of a Chinese friend of mine and after a little research Jules and I found out it actually means ‘the sound of innovation on an open mind’, which was a pretty cool label for what we wanted to do so we went with it.” So was music something that you had always planned on pursuing a career in. “Very much so. Jules was in his first band at the age of 11 and so was I. I think when you know that something fits you have to embrace it. “ As you were growing up what music was influencing you? “Well in all honesty I grew up listening to any old stuff on the radio, so as a teenager it was Spice Girls and Take That but the first record I ever bought was the song Mr Vain by EuroDance group Culture Beat. “Then when I was around 19 I moved to a place called Islington Mill in Salford, it had 40 artists living and working there. Within a month I had found bands like Talking Heads, The Smiths, Blondie, LCD Soundsystem, Le Tigre… Basically it blew my mind! I was really angry with myself for not finding this music sooner!” Once her path was set down the road to a career in music did she get the full backing of her parents? “Both Jules and I were really lucky in that regard because we didn’t face the usual ‘get a real job’ jibes that some people have thrown at them. However, you’ve also got to

www.ohlala-magazine.com

remember that this is a very fickle business and very few artists actually enjoy a long career in music any more, so it does require some consideration. “The way music is listened to and shared these days makes it a more challenging process.” On the subject of “challenging” how hard was it to write their third album? “It was really easy and perhaps more importantly also really enjoyable. If anything we suffered more on the second album, which is traditionally the one that often stumps many artists. “We both love writing as well as performing and the songs are always just written by the two of us. We can use anything from a guitar to an iPad as part of that process so no two songs are ever the same.” How would you classify your music? “Hmm…it’s difficult! I think we are quite a strange band to place. We write pop, we love pop! But the way that we function is not typical of a normal pop band. We change our sound quite a lot!” What about the touring side of your work? Do you like performing? “Very much. It’s the best way to connect with your fans but after two years on tour you do start to look forward to the more conventional stuff. Because we have been working on the album in Ibiza It feels good to be off an island and in the big cities again. “That said, we do have a tour around the UK, Japan and then the US underway so there isn’t much time to stop still for too long!” Social media is such an important component for many musician’s, do you use it? “Absolutely! Our band first started on MySpace and it was paramount to what we did as a new band, to get the word out there. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are our main ways of staying in touch with our fans!”

“Ting Ting was the name of a Chinese friend of mine and after a little research Jules and I found out it actually means ‘the sound of innovation on an open mind’, which was a pretty cool label for what we wanted to do so we went with it.”

You have both been in the industry for over seven years now so how do you think it has changed since you first embarked on your career as the Ting Tings? “I think in a way it’s a lot tougher for new bands. Those first records we sold on our own label gave us the little bit of cash to get us on tour. There are so many artists out there now that it can be really difficult to get noticed and with information overload attention spans are short. “BUT it’s nice that songs can blow up without radio, you can have a really nice relationship with people that enjoy your music and you have somewhere instant to put your creativity so there are two sides to the coin.” Are there any artists you would like to perform or write with? “Oh, my goodness. So many! Prince of course – who wouldn’t. David Byrne, Stevie Nicks (I’m obsessed), Lindsay Buckingham (Jules is obsessed!). I could go on with a list that would never end! There are just so many talented people out there and you can

only hope that you get the chance to work with one or two.” For so many people music would be an interest or an escape but as it is your career what do you do outside of that environment to pass the time? “Ha! We have no time! Music takes over your life and there is very little space for anything else. I love animals but I can’t honestly say either of us is able to commit to anything in any great way at the moment. “I love to sew and I enjoy designing and making clothes and Jules paints so we certainly have other potential career paths if the music suddenly folds or we decide to try something else! “Right now we are happy as we are.” The Ting Tings latest album Super Critical is out now on CD and digital download and you can find out more details of their extensive tour by visiting their website at www.thetingtings.com

Larnaca Nicholas Chrisostomou takes us on a traveling journey to Larnaca, Cyprus, discover the magic behind it…

B

to your table in a more friendly fashion than efore the Turkish invasion of pretty much anywhere else in Cyprus because Cyprus in 1974 Larnaca was Larnaca folks care, they treasure and encourage best known as an oil refinery and shipping port. It was anything the interest in their town which the arrival of but a holiday destination and was the big airlines has created. Gone are the days certainly not a place of interest when visitors landed in Larnaca, immediately to overseas visitors. Jump forward to 2015 and exited the airport and headed to other parts Larnaca now boasts a slick airport designed by of Aphrodite’s island. Now many visitors don’t the French completed few years venture out of Larnaca and it’s ago at a cost of one billion US not hard to see why… “Before the Turkish Dollars and Qatar Airways For starters the area boasts invasion of Cyprus in (which flies direct from Doha), some of the best blue flag British Airways, Emirates, Mediterranean beaches in 1974 Larnaca was best Etihad, Gulf Air and Lufthansa Europe. Makenzy Beach, a few known as an oil refinery are just some of the airlines flying minutes from Larnaca airport, and shipping port. It was is wide, sandy and lined by the direct to Cyprus’ international hub. This may be because Larnaca island’s top beach clubs serving anything but a holiday is not a crazy, mad city. On the incredible food and frequently destination and was contrary, Larnaca is the oldest boasting some of the world’s certainly not a place town on the island, retains a top DJ’s. French DJ/popstar charm and sense of tradition Bob Sinclar, Armin Van Buren of interest to overseas which has long since disappeared and David Morales have all visitors. Jump forward from many of Europe’s other DJ’d in Larnaca in the past tourist destinations and remnants to 2015 and Larnaca now 12 months and it didn’t cost boasts a slick airport of many past civilizations give the an arm and a leg to get into South of the island a unique mix designed by the French” their parties. Swish beach clubs of historic sites. like Koo (+357 24626212), Larnaca is modern and Makou (+357 24400701) and traditional at the same time, not to mention Lush (+357 70008089) churn out great food and affordable. Prices for a good meal in Larnaca are refreshing cocktails for a fraction of the price of considerably less than the same quality fare in their Ibithincan counterparts and eateries like the island’s capital Nicosia or big seaside resort Nippon (+357 24400330) which is in my humble of Limassol. The food is superb with plenty of opinion the best restaurant on the island, produce restaurants to chose from, and it will be delivered cuisine to rival London’s best. On a Larnaca beach 72

you can sink into a sun lounger, enjoy delicious cuisine and sip on a cocktail with your toes in the Mediterranean for half of the cost of being in Italy. Being half Italian I really shouldn’t be saying this!

If culture is your thing the beautiful late 9th century church of Saint Lazarus in the centre of town is worth a visit for its Baroque, Rococo, Byzantine and Gothic architecture (www. ayioslazaros.org) and is bordered by inviting pavement cafés and small tavernas where you can enjoy an authentic Greek coffee or souvlaki kebab. Ancient monument Hala Sultan Tekke is a mosque and Muslim shrine on the west bank of Larnaca’s four interconnecting salt lakes, which in the winter months host anything up to 10,000 flamingos which migrate to Cyprus to feast on the lakes’ brine shrimps. It’s the beta carotene in the shrimp which turns flamingos’ feathers pink. Just off the coast of Larnaca, the Zenobia has been voted one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world (dive@divezenobia.com) and diving it is a must for any experienced diver. To get a real feel for Cypriot daily life stay in the town centre at a small, privately owned hotel. Two of the best located are Trip Advisor #1, Hotel Opera (www.hoteloperalarnaca.com) and Alkisti (www.cityalkisti.com). Neither has a pool but both are on Saint Lazarus Square and two minutes walk from the inviting Mediterranean Sea. Bordering Larnaca’s main promenade, Phinikoudes Beach is one of the most famous in Cyprus; “Phinikoudes” means small palm trees, which were planted in 1922 and are now very tall! At the end of the beach is Larnaca Castle, a Byzantine fort whose construction started in the late 12th century. Now fully restored the castle has a colourful past having been occupied by the Germans during World War I, retaken by the British and later used as a prison. Walk for a few minutes past the castle and you will come into a traditional area where potters have their workshops and incredible ceramics and pottery can be purchased fresh from the kiln. Three which you must visit are: www.stavrosceramics. com, www.studioceramicscyprus.com and www. emirapottery.com.cy. Now that Larnaca is barely a three-hour flight from Doha on Qatar Airways, Cyprus’ ancient Greek culture, island charm, Mediterranean beaches and delicious cuisine are closer than ever before.

The news

DJ

katie smiles visits doha Ohlala! Qatar meets up with the enigmatic DJ. She talks about her ambitions, Middle Eastern experience and her latest gig in town! How did you choose your DJ name? My DJ name was chosen for me by my brother and fellow DJ Liam, I think the reason being because I smile an awful lot! When did you realizethatyouwereprofessionally interested in music? It was more of a natural progression from falling in love with house music, being an avid clubber when I was growing up in London and then buying records and turntables. I then decided to take it a step further and enrolled on a DJ course to learn the professional tricks of the trade before promoting parties in London with friends. How would you describe your DJ style? Pure house music. What tracks do you find to be popular in the Middle East? Uplifting music with lots of vocals plus a few house classics thrown into the mix... my perfect kind of set. What has been the highlight of your career so far? That’s a tough one since I have played many amazing gigs. I grew up clubbing a lot at The End in London (now closed) and I completely loved

everything about the club, so the first time I DJ’d there was pretty special for me, not least because I had seen so many world famous, pioneering DJ’s play at The End prior to DJ’ing there myself. What is your biggest ambition for the future? To be successful, healthy and happy in my life and to be able to give something back to others less fortunate than I am. What can people in Doha expect on going to one of your gigs? Great house music of course. A lot of passion from me behind the decks that I try to fuel into the crowd. I will always be DJ’ing with a smile on my face and you can usually find me on the dance floor before and after I play. What has been (so far) your biggest gig? In the Middle East, all of the parties which Coco Latté organises at Grand Hyatt Doha hotel are seriously good quality with a lovely crowd and atmosphere to match, so these are always up there with the best of them for me.

SAVE THE DATE “Put A Ring On It” dance party 8pm-2am Thursday 8 January at Dunes, Grand Hyatt Doha. Headlined by British dancefloor darling DJ Katie Smiles from London, accompanied by resident DJ Santiago Vittorelli. Guys QAR 50 entry including a free drink. Ladies free entry including a free drink. “Rehab Brunch” 12:30 -4pm Friday 9 January at The Grill, Grand Hyatt Doha. Featuring DJ Katie Smiles on the

decks plus Amy Winehouse’s greatest hits performed live by soul songstress Miss Avis Ellis.

The Ferrari FF

84

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva Drives We take Ferrari’s massively powerful ‘shooting brake’ V12 for a two-hour drive through some of the most beautiful landscape in the world to the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab resort in the Liwa Desert – a suitably dramatic journey for a highly dramatic car!

S

o, what does the ‘FF’ stand for? That would be ‘Four-wheeldrive’, and ‘Four seats’. Fourseater Ferraris are nothing new – they’ve been making them since 1949. Four-wheel-drive, however, is a very new thing which has had Ferrari purists hemming and hawing. They needn’t be alarmed though, because the four-wheel-drive system is a masterpiece in engineering, with the rear wheels providing most of the power, and the front wheels kicking in only when needed through a second gearbox at the front of the car. ‘Only when needed’ means in comfort or snow modes and only between first and fourth gears. This essentially makes it safely driveable in all weather conditions, whilst still behaving like a rearwheel-drive car when you want to go a bit mental. Maranello touts the FF as ‘the most practical Ferrari ever’, thanks to the shooting-brake design, which allows for four very comfortable seats, with plenty of legroom and headroom in the rear, and decent storage. Without the spare wheel, there’s room for four fitted pieces of luggage (available from Ferrari of course), some golf clubs, or, if you fold the rear seats down, a mountain bike! With the spare wheel, you’d be lucky to fit a handbag in there, it takes up so much of the space. What makes the FF slightly less practical is the size. It’s a surprisingly large car, which is deceptive, because you expect a Ferrari to have smaller, sports car dimensions. However, we parked it next to a Mercedes S Class in a hotel forecourt, to our amazement the FF was easily as long as the big luxury barge. Coupled with the very long bonnet and low seating position, this can make parking in a mall a jaw-clenching affair! The interior of the FF is a glorious place to be, with a great driving position, comfortable seats, leather padded surfaces everywhere you look, and that unmistakeable Italian Ferrari feel. We loved the steering wheel, with that classic

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Ferrari array of knobs and switches that make you feel like you’re sitting in a racing car. For example, there are the rev lights across the top of the wheel that climbs into the red to let you know when to change gear. Then there’s the Ferrari manettino dial, which is the little red ‘fun’ switch that changes the car’s chassis settings between Ice (safe), Comfort (daily drive), Sport (traction control limited, bit mental), and ESC Off (traction control off, absolutely mental!). Then you’ve also got the engine start/stop button, the damper button (set to soft for bumpy roads), indicators, washers and high beam, and it all feels like a bit much when you first climb in. However, after a few hours of driving it all becomes second nature, and once you’re used to it, it feels amazingly intuitive. The best thing about the FF, though, is that utterly beautiful 6.3l, 660hp, 683Nm naturallyaspirated V12. It’s glorious, and quite simply the fastest car I’ve ever driven. Power delivery is furious and linear, with a soul-stirring Ferrari howl, and just doesn’t stop. It’ll hit 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, which admittedly isn’t the fastest I’ve ever reached 100 before, but the amazing thing is how it will just keep accelerating on from there. We didn’t quite hit the 335km/h top speed, but we weren’t too far off, and it will quite happily cruise at 180km/h like it’s the simplest thing in the world! The downside? It devours fuel at an eyewatering rate. Over the four days we had it, we had to completely refill the tank twice, bearing in mind it was full when we picked it up. Power is transferred to the road via the incredible sevenspeed double-clutch gearbox, with gear changes so fast they’re almost imperceptible to the human brain. When combined, the engine, gearbox and transmission create something that is truly unique in this world. OHLALA!

the column

MissOhlala and some winter affairs... We have all been a fashion victim and Doha folks – are no exception! Winter has a different meaning for many and Doha being a hot pot of cultures makes room for diversity and misinterpretations. What defines winter, really? Is it the whitesnow-holidays kind of thing, or more like, the money we spend on: coats, reindeer sweaters, or the obnoxious green scarves for our relatives? Coming from a tropical climate, I never really knew what winter was like; let alone having the perfect ‘white-winter-holiday.’ I was always intrigued as to what it really meant having to wear ten layers of cloathing, or, having to shove the snow out of your car garage—the only thing I came to shove, was the mud from my back door patio! My first real winter experience was petrifying and Milan had the privilege to show me what winter was really like. The only thing I cared about was whether my fingers were still attached to my hand, or not. Probably, those where the times were I truly became a fashion ‘NO, NO!’ The one thing I could possibly afford was an H&M coat and still, it wouldn’t make any difference as to wearing it, or not—let’s be real, how can a 20 euro coat keep you warm in such a cold city? It was up until I came to Doha that I understood what shopping for a winter season was really like. But, yet again, what is winter in Doha? Doha folks are all about the latest London trend, what’s available at Harrods? What is the latest ‘cool’ coat to wear at a 50 degree climate? Whoever steps into the arms of Qatar, will understand when I say, “I will buy winter clothes, even if it’s not cold!” Haven’t you? Haven’t you fallen into that vicious circle, where you know the climate is still hot and you still buy that wool coat from Zara to use for your next ‘fashion soiree’? I know, I have. I have fallen into the fashion trap where I’ve bought more than six blazers and jackets and I’m still impatiently waiting for the climate to change—and they still have the price tag on! It’s ok, I’ve got you; you were probably thinking you were the only one peeking at winter clothes 98

OHLALA!

and deciding if you will sweat too much if you’d step out in a full wool gown… As days go by, the whole idea of winter and dressing very fashionably for it seems to fade with time. There are still people with flip-flops pretending to be in mid-summer wearing sleeveless shirts; while others are trying their best to look somehow fashionably on point in Doha’s ‘long awaited’ climate. I’ve come to experience bizarre encounters with people who wear black leather boots in mid-October. Do we really need them by that time of the year? What is it that truly defines

winter in Doha, or if you’re a wonderer like me— what do we wear? Doha and its ‘winter fashion’ have turned me into what I used to despise the most: black monotony with a twist of chic. I’ve come to enjoy shopping for the cold season, there is nothing more joyful than running into a store and picking blazers and coats that I will never get to use, if I ever do, I’m a lucky girl… it’s Doha’s winter affair. So whether we shop for our closets to keep, or we truly shop for some joyful holidaywinter must-haves; Doha is an utter unique culture pot with some serious fashion guidelines. www.ohlala-magazine.com
