Editor’s Letter
Press play
As we all return, halfheartedly I must say, back to work, our lives and a busier than ever capital, our grown-up take on the “back to school” days that lay ahead, bring promises of a new start. Yes, a new season means new beginnings, something we’re all excited about, especially when there’s the prospect of ushering in a new sense of resolve, one we might add, that will go very well with next fall’s fresh updates like the coveted hero dress or a printed pair of ankle boots. This issue’s fashion pages will, we hope, arm you with the essentials to transition from one fashion season to another seamlessly and instantly; our editors have scoured the industry for the key pieces that will work for you this fall and beyond, modernizing your entire wardrobe. We even show you how to put everything together with our must-see fashion story, that’ll have you combining old with new - an essential way of dressing in these modern days. As the heat of summer becomes partially bearable, those of you who stayed put in August will bare witness to what a terrible month that was, what better place to discover next FW14’s beauty trends than backstage at the shows? And that’s exactly where we went to get the scoop on the must-haves from lash enveloped eyes all the way to the ballerina bun; we’ve compiled a catwalk beauty report that’ll have you feeling all polished and beautiful for a busy season ahead. Although Doha is slowly coming back to life after its summer hiatus, and life is resuming its natural course for most after a much-needed vacay, the social scene is gradually picking up with different art showcases, exhibits and the Qatar Summer Festival to check out. We suggest enjoying the slow pace of things, because come October, we’ll all be on our toes until Christmas. Dina Kabbani

Up and Up! Fast growth and an ever-more-valuable brand are gratifying, but for Donna Benton, Founder and CEO of the Entertainer incentives company, nothing trumps passion. WORDS BY KARINA LAZARRAGA
Fourteen years on and the Entertainer brand is as strong as ever and is now present in 15 countries and 40 destinations as of last count. “That list is growing and business is very good,” beams Donna. In 2012, the UAE-based Abraaj Group acquired a 50 percent stake in the multi-million dollar company. Quite an extraordinary feat for Donna who arrived in Dubai with just USD 3,000. Established in Dubai in 2001, the Entertainer offers buy-one-get-one-free incentives at quality outlets in the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, as well as countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. The company publishes annual products for each country market containing vouchers for restaurants, hotel stays, family and leisure activities, beauty and spa treatments. Just this year, the company launched its mobile app so the vouchers can be redeemed digitally at any outlet and is valid for use worldwide. For Donna, even if the market is on fire, 44

she believes that, “You have to be a leader, not a follower. Also, you can’t over-analyse things as by the time you’re done analysing, others will be a step ahead of you already.” So was there a moment when she thought if her business idea would ever work? “No, not at all,” came her answer. “If you believe something, nothing can get in the way of you achieving your goals. Be prepared to work hard, have strong work ethic, and do a feasibility study – as ultimately, if it makes a profit then it’s a business, and if it doesn’t, it’s simply a hobby.” So what’s it like working with her? “I would say I’m fair but firm. When I hire people, I don’t simply look at their CV as that doesn’t exactly tell you what a person is capable of doing. I look at someone’s character and try to envision how they

fit with our company values and what they could bring to the Entertainer as an employee. Most importantly, when it comes to new hires, I go with my gut instinct. “Day to day, I have an open-door policy and I do my best to make it a fun environment for people to work in. I’m also very realistic and structured.” Donna is wise to heed the lessons from the early days of the company: “There have been many mistakes when I was starting out, but I wouldn’t give up those mistakes as it has taught me many things. When you’re faced with hurdles, the best way is to think of a solution and not focus on the problem,” she shares. If there’s one thing we can take from her success story, it’s that, “Dreams can come true. If you work hard and really put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. A woman can multi-task and still achieve 100 percent of everything and be successful at it. The key to success is that you must have a good brand or concept, deliver results and be passionate.”

STYLE PROFILE
What was the first garment you ever designed? Bell bottom trousers!
Your first fashion moment? Age two, insisting on wearing red patent leather shoes and a blue jean jacket every day to the park.
What inspires your designs?
THE INTERVIEW: Stacey Bendet In anticipation of her Doha store opening later this October, we caught up with the brains behind the eponymous Alice + Olivia brand.
I am inspired by different things every day. When you are constantly designing you are constantly inspired by things around you— travel, vintage, the drape of a curtain… you never know what will trigger your next design!
Describe Alice + Olivia’s signature style. Sexy, elegance and a bit whimsical.
Tell us about the FW14 collection and the inspiration behind it. The theme was an enchanted fairytale, one all about romance and mystery.
What are you wearing when you’re not wearing Alice + Olivia? Yoga clothes or occasional vintage.
We know you love vintage shopping, so can you tell us a little about your all-time favourite find? A red and orange floor length velvet printed Oscar de la Renta coat from The Way We Wore in Los Angeles.

FASHION INSIDER
STYLE RESUME Name: Kaarin Pfeffer Profession: PR & Communications Manager at The St. Regis Doha My style is: Simple and eclectic, passionate about accessories go-to labels: Armani, Zara and Country Road Australia My fail-safe pieces: Armani Black satin skirt, Country Road ¾ length jacket, Tom Ford black silk pants, Country Road white tee, Dolce & Gabbana jeans, Sergio Rossi boots – dressed up or down these pieces will take you anywhere
LITTLE BLACK BOOK
This September, we delve into the world of PR maven, Kaarin Pfeffer, who reveals her fashion must-haves, beauty secrets and more… Who is your style icon? Tom Ford is my ultimate style icon. I love his classic simplistic style - simple always works. Elle MacPherson is my icon for the other, more relaxed part of my Aussie personality; classic white tee with jeans, ballet flats and a cowboy hat for the beach – should look effortless.
Closet you would die for? I think Cara Delevinge would have an amazing closet, I imagine it would be full of classic pieces, but just a little unexpected, quirky and a little bit rock and roll.
Favourite shopping spot in Doha? Aramex - when my package arrives from Net-a-porter. Sadly I don’t have much time for anything other than food shopping.
Signature scent? Hypnotic Poison Eau de Parfum by Dior. I fell in love with the vanilla and musky notes 20 years ago and still love it.
Favourite beauty products?
Tom
My new obsession is Rodial products; completely in love as I don’t have time and they offer a quick fix with super hydration, which is perfect for Qatar. I don’t go anywhere without the Stemcell Superfood Facial Oil, it’s even great on lips.

Which do you prefer: Flats or Heels? Why? Flats. I love heels and yes they make your legs look longer and flatten out your stomach, but in my job I walk miles and I am constantly on the run, and to be completely honest, I never quite mastered the walking in 5 inch heels. Lucky for me metallic sandals, pointy flats and even sneakers are big this year.
Emporio Armani
Dior
Cara Delevigne
Worst fashion moment? A full cowboy outfit; I had just spent a month in Texas and was obsessed with the boots, hat and big buckle belt. I wore the whole ensemble to an event, unfortunately everyone else was in elegant maxi dresses. Great lesson – less is definitely more.
What music is on your ipod now? Summer festival tunes are still at the top of the play list. Loving John Butler Trio, The Black Keys and after her appearance at Glastonbury have rediscovered Dolly Parton, she is pretty cool. Sergio Rossi 48

AN ARTIST’S STORY What happens when a talent in the art world pursues a new life as a designer? According to Marsumä Designs, an Egyptian based brand bridging the gap between art and fashion, canvas turns into the new clothing. Artist and design star, Nour Omar, talks Lichtenstein, Italian Renaissance and why wearable art, such as her coveted collectable bag line, are taking the fashion industry by storm.

MADE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Tell us a little bit about yourself ? Well, my real name is Nour el Hoda, after an old famous Egyptian black and white movie actress; my mother says she was beautiful and had a unique voice, to go with her unique name. I’m Egyptian, born and raised. Happily married to an incredible man. Art has always been in my family since before I can remember. Drawing, painting, writing and creating have always been my outlets, a place where I lose myself, in a good way. How did you start out? It all started in 2008, I was a fresh graduate with a Fine Arts degree, wanting to experiment with art beyond the canvas. I started painting on Converse shoes. People were really drawn to the shoes, the fact that they were hand-painted, and that you could wear art was exciting and new. It started as a hobby; creating these personalized hand-painted Chuck Taylors. As my clientele expanded, I decided it was time to go bigger. When did you decide to start Marsumä Designs? In late 2013 I came up with the idea of expanding into hand painted bags, beach bags and clutches - all under the Marsumä brand. The concept of wearable, accessible art was something new and untapped.
My art background is what inspires my work, and especially my whole take on design. I try to create an art piece that is at the same time fashionable and functional. Still using my brushes, paint and canvas then transforming the work into a trendy bag for the modern woman. Tell us about the challenges you’ve faced... One of my biggest challenges is the amount of time and detail it takes to complete each piece. The drawing and painting process cannot be
rushed and is the essence that makes my pieces unique. Therefore my collections are limited and cannot be mass-produced. But then, this is what Marsumä is all about. What’s the inspiration behind your bags? Is there a story behind each design? My first collection of bags is heavily based and inspired by the great masters and pioneers of Modern Art as we know it; like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. I love the simplicity of pop art and the timelessness of each piece. The message is simple and direct, yet evokes so much feeling
Artist turned designer, Nour Omar, at her studio in Egypt.
Who is the Marsumä woman? The Marsumä woman is confident, unique, edgy and modern. Motivated by originality and taste. For her, art is in the details. How has your art background affected your work? www.ohlala-magazine.com

and wonder in its viewer. That’s exactly how I want people to feel as they admire the Marsumä bags. Each bag impersonates its own character. I like to think that each design takes on its own personality and finds its patron. What’s been your career highlight so far? My career highlight so far just recently happened, as one of my favourite New York artists, who is very well established in the New York fashion and arts scene, stumbled upon my designs on Instagram and wrote me, saying that he’s a big fan and admires my work. That moment was surreal. Whom do you look up to in the fashion industry? The fashion industry is so vast and changing, that keeping up is a job on its own. I look up to any designer that strives for originality. Setting the trends, and breaking the envelope is what grabs my attention. Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from the place I know best, the art world. Looking up the old can sometimes create the new. Each collection I plan to create starts off with a theme and a 66

mood. I then dive into my art history books, and the images that have stayed with me from the Italian Renaissance to the avantgarde, from the impressionists to modernism. Inspiration takes a life of its own. What is your favourite piece from your collections? My favourite piece from my collection is Roy Lichtenstein’s “Drowning Girl“ Beach bag. It just speaks volumes.
Can you share some advice for other independent designers? My advice would be, find what you love doing, and follow your passion. Where can women from Doha get their hands on your pieces? PERFECT SKIN
Burberry Prorsum
Pared-back beauty carries on from Spring/Summer 2014’s take on the no-makeup-make-up vibe, unlikely to disappear as proven on this seasons’ catwalks. From healthily glowing skin to neat brows, the minimal-effort look had everyone from Stella McCartney to Isabel Marant sporting their own take on post-gym glows.
FULL BROWS
Yes, it can be said that the strong brow is still going strong! For those who want to sport the fierce factor, remember colour, density, shape and an arch to kill for are key. Tom Ford
MORNING AFTER Think messy hair, kohl remnants from the night before and a carless punk-like attitude if you want to fit in with the beauty gang this season. 70

Audi Q7 3.0 TFSI
We review Audi’s seven-seater Q7, a luxurious behemoth that is easily one of the best family carriers on the market today.
O
n the face of it, the Q7 has changed little since it was first launched back in 2005, save for a few minor facelifts and extra offerings in terms of gadgetry. However, the biggest change for this generation is the excellent 3.0l V6 turbo charged engine, which replaces the hugely thirsty 4.2l V8 that formerly powered the Q7. Despite the V6 being smaller and more efficient, it is still faster and more powerful than the V8, thanks to the turbo. It’ll do 0-100km/h in a commendable 6.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 245km/h.
76
OHLALA!
The main selling points of the Q7 are its comfort and practicality. It is a very large vehicle with seven seats and plenty of room for cargo. There is a third row of seats in the back, which is functional, but cramped. It’s fine for children, but not so much for adults. Even with the third row seats up, the boot space is still large enough for a weekly shop or the school bags of six messy children. With the second and third seats folded flat, the cargo space is vast, making for a very useful and versatile vehicle. Bring it on, IKEA! However, this size does come at a price. Despite parking
www.ohlala-magazine.com

To summarise, the Q7 is a fantastic family carrier. It’s safe, luxurious, hugely spacious and versatile
sensors AND cameras on both the front and rear of the vehicle, parking it anywhere tight is extremely tricky. Despite its size, though, the Q7 handles almost supernaturally, thanks to Audi’s class-leading Quattro technology. To give it a bit of a test, we threw it into a hairpin turn at 70km/h, and the Quattro system simply turned. No understeer, or oversteer, or even noticeable tyre screech. It just turned. Further ‘enthusiastic’ driving on tight corners produced similarly impressive results. It is absolutely phenomenal for a vehicle that weighs almost two-and-a-half tonnes! Which brings us to the reason why we feel that the Q7 is such a great family car. It’s not the many different seating configurations, or the third row of seating, or rear climate control. It’s the safety. If you want to ferry your munchkins around in a towering behemoth of sublime comfort and invincibility, the Q7 is your best bet. Aside from the fact that the superb Quattro system will handle almost any emergency manoeuvring at normal driving speeds with ease, the all-round curtain airbags front and rear ensure that, should the unthinkable happen, you’re all www.ohlala-magazine.com
cocooned in a cushioned bubble of safety. Now, unlike other large luxury SUVs like the Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and Range Rover, the Q7 makes no big claims with regards to its off-road capabilities. It is lacking in gadgetry like terrain select, hill descent control and diff lock settings. This is a Chelsea tractor through and through! It does, however, have an off-road suspension setting that will raise the vehicle’s ground clearance to 240mm, to help you avoid catching that big front spoiler on things. And, the Quattro all-wheel-drive system also serves to make the Q7 surprisingly competent off-road. On gravelly climbs and soft sand, the power goes to where it’s needed to keep the vehicle on the move, and it made light work of the medium-difficulty obstacles we threw at it. To summarise, the Q7 is a fantastic family carrier. It’s safe, luxurious, hugely spacious and versatile. If you’re looking for an SUV for serious off-roading, this isn’t what the Q7 was made for. It was made for trips to football practice, school runs, and the occasional family outing to a camping ground or beach. And in Doha, what else could you possibly need it for?

The top artistic endeavours in September PROJECT SPACE 4: DOHA ART MAP Ongoing throughout September at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art Project Space 4 presents a collaborative mapping experiment projected on the wall at Mathaf, onto which the public and the project’s curators can pin areas where one can experience art in the city. This amazing project is the brainchild of a collaborative effort by local curators and educators from Katara Art Center, QMA Public Arts, and Mathaf thanks to a recent curatorial workshop at the museum on the subject of critical practice. The Doha Art Map asks us to work together to identify where we see and experience art in Doha and discuss how these could become more generous to our needs.
Qatar Summer Festival As part of the Qatar Summer Festival 2014, Qatar Tourism Authority has converted the Doha Exhibition Center into an indoor 10,000sqm entertainment city. And with activities and programs that cater to all ages, we know the entire family can join in the fun!
G 100 THOUGHTS: CHAPTER 1
THE TIGER’SDREAM
Will run from 15 September – 16 October, at VCUQatar Gallery Through his time spent in Doha, Tim Makower has been creating sketchbooks as an extension to himself. In an effort to reflect his fleeting thoughts, ideas and moments in a very direct and personal way, these small books hold starting points to different moments that he himself has explored. By exhibiting them in the gallery context, Makower invites the viewer to share his journeys, as well as construct their own personal narratives or ‘100 Thoughts’ in Doha.
Will run from 29 September - 24 January, at Musuem of Islamic Arts Delve into the life of the controversial Tipu Sultan, the South Indian ruler, statesman, and patron. Go on a journey of exploration through pieces drawn entirely from the MIA collection, featuring many objects that have never been displayed in Qatar. Through a group of 24 paintings, you’ll get to witness Tipu’s victory at the Battle of Pollilur in 1780, alongside a selection of objects which reflect Tipu’s image as the ‘Tiger of Mysore.’

oing to the entertainment city not only means endless fun, but it also provides a chance for visitors to get away from the summer heat. The DEC is split up into zones, with dedicated games areas – ranging from professional skateboarding ramps to bouncy castles, a food court area, and a retail area. QTA has carved out a “Summer Freeze” zone, the biggest zone, mainly featuring a ski slope for both skiing and also snow tubing, ice hockey and a snow globe for children to mingle with the artificial snow. In addition, there is an “Interactive Sports” zone featuring a remotecontrolled car, an interactive simulator area with two F1 racing simulators, and a Zorb obstacle course, where children can get into a large clear plastic sphere and steer their way around a track of slopes. The “Extreme Adventure” zone caters to both beginners and professionals in skateboarding, bike riding, and rollerblading. The DEC entertainment city will be open from 3pm to 11pm on weekdays, and from 2pm to midnight on weekends. Although the entry is free, activities are priced between QR5 to QR30. A free shuttle service is available from the Q-Post office to DEC from 3pm to 10pm on weekdays and 2pm to 11pm on weekends. Check out the fun until September 27, at the Doha Exhibition Center

MISS OHLALA! No little girl starts out her life thinking that she wants to be the ‘side chic’, but somehow too many of us do grow up to be just that. In some cultures like France it is celebrated. Being a mistress is alluring, mutually beneficial and somewhat socially acceptable. In cultures in the Middle East it is even legal for a man to marry the other women (and throw in two extras to the mix as well.) And in some regions in China concubines still exist. So why is it that the thought of being someone’s other woman makes me so sick in the stomach. Living as an expat in a city like Doha, it is easy to become ‘the other woman’ without even knowing it. When I first moved here I met a girl who told me her serious boyfriend whom which she had moved in with, turned out to have a wife and kids back home. I also know a man who tells his wife back home that Doha is no place to raise a family, so he can pretend to be a bachelor and chase cabin crew every evening while she’s on the other side of the globe bringing up his children. I have spent a lot of time laughing at these stories. How could she not realize that during her evening run every night, her boyfriend spent family time on skype from the very same room they had shared so many intimate moments. And how funny I thought it was that my pseudo-bachelor friend had another bimbo on his arm each week. Heck I even helped him and painted the picture with him that he’s a single fun loving man. It all stops being funny when it happens to you. We were seeing each other for months, and hid it for professional reasons. I didn’t think anything of the secrecy; I thought he was protecting me. Only yesterday did I fall upon evidence that he has a full-blown relationship back home, and it was all there on her Facebook. He sent her flowers last week! 98
OHLALA!
Wait a minute? Did he propose!! Devastated I am, but also feeling naïve and wondering how I missed all the signs. The words “Doha is a lonely place, we can keep each other company while we are here…” are still echoing in my head. The truth hits hard, when you realize you are merely a part of a temporary existence, where what you thought was your real life is somebody else’s makebelieve world. And however accidental it was that you got into this position, the conclusion is very much real. You have officially become the other woman. The red flags are always there; we just choose to overlook them. Never think your immune to bull because it happens to the best of us. If he wants to keep you a secret or if he limits his social media (if he only has one profile picture you may want to end it right now), well then honey, you may want to do some digging. Tata for now, until next time. Miss Ohlala!
