FASHION FOCUS

IS LESS MORE? Laura Hamilton examines what minimalism means to fashion and whether it will ever come to the Middle East.

I

n times of economic stress, fashion adapts accordingly. In the Roaring Twenties, flappers cut their hair as short as their hemlines, but after the Depression, fashion became a bit more conservative. Think Doris Day in a voluminous a-line skirt: cute, but hardly edgy. After the double-dip recession of more recent years, brought on by greedy bankers, people have pulled back from the excess and that has led to minimalism, which has now become en vogue. Our leaders are Scandinavian bloggers and our platform Instagram. But for all of us who like fashion, and who tend to overindulge in shopping, consumerism has become our new identity. Owning a Prada handbag has become a marker of economic and social success, whereas once it was a cut-glass accent, or an Ivy-league education. With more opportunities to shop, we shop more often and therefore have more stuff. Our wardrobes doth overflow. There is an appeal to minimalism as the antidote to over-indulging. As much accessories as I have, no one wants to dress like Helena Sometimes the easiest way to be minimalist is to go monochrome. 66

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

The wonderful thing about the FF is that it is as much a car for day-to-day driving with the family or friends, as it is for extraordinarily exclusive occasions, which demand an exotic car. You can drive easily and relaxed, or really push it to the limits

“Here in the Middle East, our style identity is bold.”

Victoria Beckham’s collection shows her new direction towards simple chic

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Bonham Carter, or at least, no one who wants to be taken seriously. It’s a sad world. The idea of the capsule wardrobe seems restrictive at first, but is actually very freeing. All your pieces work together in any combination you choose, so when it comes to traveling (something we all do in the Middle East frequently) there is no panicking that you’re going to get charged for extra baggage. With limited options, comes better choice. The clothes you do choose to enter your wardrobe have been carefully thought through and are better quality. They’re investment pieces rather than fast fashion. But how possible is that to do in a world of disposable, fun fashion? Here in the Middle East, our style identity is bold, which is a nice way of say over-the-top. We are fabulous, extravagant, and vivacious. We don’t do minimalism. I personally think that it’s a way to combat the heat and the beige landscape; nothing cheers you up more than a little colour therapy aka bright lippy and lurid accessories. However, ever since Kim Kardashian joined forces with Kanye West, her wardrobe has changed from vampy fashion victim to classy minimalist. She advocates muted tones and colour blocking. If Kim can let go of the neon bodycon, perhaps we can, too. The biggest transformation, however, has come from Posh Spice herself. Who would have known

that a woman who thought wearing a tiny mini dress and Prada mules made her posh would one day own an empire based around chic, minimalist fashion? Is minimalism more than a new trend… it is a lifestyle? Doha hardly seems like the kind of place that would foster yoga, but in recent years half the people I’ve met are part-time yoga instructors. It seems to be a reaction against the pressures of our hectic daily lives, and minimalism is part of that. Although consumerism tends to creep in and we end up at Lulumelon or Sweaty Betty buying lurid yoga pants to help us achieve nirvana, there is definitely a hankering to cut back, to do less but achieve more. Part of it, I believe is down to the aesthetics. The clean lines, pastel colours and plenty of white space. It strips away the use of colour and instead focuses on the structure of the fabrics, and the textiles themselves. We’re urged to mix fabrics, rather than colours and styles. The appeal also has to do with the rise of the lifestyle blog, these incredibly put-together women and men who chronicle their day-to-day life with such apparent ease. My own desire to become more minimalist has its roots in my everchanging fashion personality. The days of gothdom, being a hippie, or even stomping around Scotland’s cobbled streets in high-heeled boots, patterned tights have given way to a style that mostly centres on my own bad decisions when it comes to shopping. Not every piece, I am learning, has to be a statement piece. I’m not going to lie; there is also an appeal to throwing out my old clothes and starting afresh., this time, as a minimalist. OHLALA!

ccording to an article I read recently, the average person spends ten years of their life at work. Women spend eight years shopping and one year choosing outfits. On a quick calculation I have already spent at least 10,000 hours in the office and probably more shopping, particularly if you include fantasy online shopping and working in retail as a student when I was shopping while working. So why do I still have more outfits for Friday brunch (current tally, 50 hours), than the office? We all have a disjointed relationship with our work wardrobes. I don’t know any women who work in a corporate environment and feel truly comfortable with their work image. At the weekend you might have your style down to a T (from Alexander Wang please) but come Sunday morning you’re staring at the wardrobe wondering wishing you could keep your PJs on and throw on a beautiful abaya. Unless you work in a creative industry, office style is more often than not about conformity. It’s even more difficult in Doha where most of us are likely to www.ohlala-magazine.com

COLUMN be working in the male dominated construction or oil and gas industries and contending with dress codes that are more conservative than what we are used to. I have many a fashionable friend who can spend hours shopping in Villagio for a perfect pair of metallic heels for that LBD, but when it comes to clothes for their 9-5, they’re stuck in a rut with an M&S suit bought on their first day of work five years ago. I know it’s machine washable, but don’t those ten years of your life deserve a bit of fun? It’s easy on a shopping trip to spot interesting pieces that are totally you. The problem is that you is normally the you drinking a cocktail with girlfriends or lying on a beach in Thailand, rather than the you sitting in front of an excel sheet with a mug of nescafe or battling the early morning traffic. I can’t claim to be any different...and can even confess to still wearing some trousers to the office that were part of my uniform as a sales assistant in Jaegar ten years ago. I also know I feel much more positive and professional on the days when I feel smart and put together, than on the days where I’ve rolled out of bed late and reached for whatever I can find in my wardrobe. Injecting some personality into your working wardrobe can be a challenge, but it can have a huge effect on your daily mood. Maybe your boss won’t appreciate your Charlotte Olympia Kitty Flats or your new shearling bag from Topshop the way you do, but trust me it’s your confidence and attitude that colleagues notice rather than what’s on your feet or under your desk. Research Assignment… easy personality updates: Scarves - you can never go wrong with a scarf in a strong print. They are such a great way to add some colour or texture to your outfit without too much expense or commitment. As a bonus, longer scarves can double as a shawl for when the a/c gets cold (isn’t that every day?). KAREN MCGRATH

78

OHLALA!

“i know i feel much more positive and professional on the KAREN MCGRATH days when i feel smart and put together, than on the days where i’ve rolled out of bed late and reached for my wardrobe.”

I have even been known to repurpose a fine wool scarf as a blanket when the temperature goes from cold to freezing. Try draping a scarf around your neck and belting it at the waist à la Burberry for a new season update. If it’s good enough for Cara and Suki! If only Bradley Cooper worked in my office... Flats - if you’ve picked up any fashion publication over the last few years you can’t have missed the gradual advance of flats as the fashion set’s choice of shoe. The high street has been stepping up its game every season and now flats have made the full transition from catwalk to sidewalk with a great collection available at every price point. Yes, even in Doha where every day is a taxi shoe day. I have to confess that I’m yet to relinquish my power heels, but I do have my eyes on some shiny winklepickers and monochrome loafers for Winter. Culottes - for some of us, culottes will never lose their association with our Brownies uniform and therefore have no place in a grown up’s wardrobe. However, after purchasing a simple navy silk pair from Whistles on a trip to the UK, I have to urge you to think again. It’s rare to find a workwear trend that’s tailor made for Doha’s warmer climate and conservative dress code, so make the most of it! There are plenty of styles out there in work appropriate shades of black, grey and navy if you’re feeling shy, or try burgundy for a pop of autumnal colour. www.ohlala-magazine.com

“The Sound of Music” is one of the bestloved musicals ever and the role of Maria the character. What’s so special about Maria and the Rodger and Hammerstein musical and why do you keep coming back to it?

MY FAVOURITE THINGS We catch up with Lucy Hunter James to learn about the upcoming musical, “The Sound of Music” which thanks to Popular Productions and State Media, hits Doha from the 26th to the 29th of November at Qatar National Convention Centre.

INTERVIEW

How did you get into acting? Was it daunting moving to Dubai, where there is less of a scene than London, or did you see it as a challenge?

Qatar has only a few productions a year. Do you think there is an appetite for more theatrical and musical events?

“Popular Productions takes pride in having been instrumental in the rise of the theatrical scene in Dubai.” 86

OHLALA!

In Doha, we’re starved for cultural events like musicals. Will Popular Productions branch out to include Qatar in the future?

How do you choose the musicals that Popular Productions puts on? Do you have certain criteria? Are you choosing musicals you love or ones you think will suit your audience? the Von Trapps?

“The Sound of Music” has the best songs a musical could hope to have, each being a classic. Which one is your favourite?

Lastly, what can we expect from your production of “The Sound of Music”?

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE… Laura Hamilton investigates the newest café at The Pearl.

W

ith a faux French vibe, and the ye olde name, Shakespeare and Co., The Pearl’s newest café is already a huge hit. This is the second café for the UAE company, and after the great success of the first café at Dar Al Salam mall, out in the sticks in Abu Hammour, where they were clearly testing the market; the second and bigger coffee shop is a far more ambitious endeavour. Kaleidoscopic inside and out, it’s quite the remedy to the dull beige that pervades the interior and exterior decorating of this country. Indeed, the attention to detail is astounding, and the rustic, mixand-match eclectic charm (although I’m sure everything was chosen very carefully), the turquoise chairs juxtaposed with the bright pink tables and the hand printed fleur de lis on the walls. So when I’m invited to try the menu, I’m quite excited and schedule it for my first official day at Ohlala! Qatar, as a sort of welcome gift to myself. Driving back from a meeting in the New www.ohlala-magazine.com

Industrial Area of all places, I get hideously lost, making our late lunch even later. With a belly grumbling more than Larry David, I manically peruse the menu and want everything – especially the Nutella crepes. Alas, people frown upon chocolate as a main course, so I refrained and kept it as a desert option. The UAE is proving quite talented at creating restaurant brands, like Shakespeare and Co. and La Serre, rather than importing them in from far-away countries, and choosing to patron a regional restaurant feels good. Voting with your wallet is, of course, the best way to support a homegrown brand.

“I like to judge cafes on their coffee and on their avocados.”

As we’re ravenous, we chose a plethora of starters, crispy calamari rings, mozzarella sticks and chicken satay. In a bid to be healthy, I chose the avocado and shrimp sandwich on brown bread. I like to judge cafes on their coffee (standard, I think, no?) and on their avocados. Strangely specific as that may sound, the number of restaurants I have been to that have advertised guacamole in their nachos and then not delivered, or avocado salads that had hard or worse, brown avocados, has been staggering. Good sandwiches are hard to find in Doha, but Shakespeare and Co. has got it down. The juicy prawns and the meltingly soft avocado are a delicious combination; so much so that I forsake the bread altogether and go straight for the fillings. You know the food is good when everyone stops speaking to savour it. After which, I was so full I needed a postlunch siesta. Unfortunately I didn’t get to try the Nutella crepes or the coffee, which just means I need to go back. This weekend I see myself sitting outside, with a plate of yummy crepes, a latte and a view of the bay…
