Editor’s Letter
Locally Grown Over the past few years, through some high-end fashion acquisitions and in the course of a cultural boom, the once desert town of Doha has now become a melting pot for the cool and creative. This special issue celebrates everything locally homegrown, from talented young Qatari designers who are taking the local fashion scene by storm to the feisty bloggers waiting there to capture them – this is a fashion frenzy you want to get in the midst of! Choosing to pay homage to the young and bright women we picked a few, from Dana AlFardan to Lama el Moatassem, who without their vision and application, Qatar would not be causing quite a stir; this February issue is a true celebration of their talents. With luxury going local with the launch of Qela last season we jumped at the opportunity to shoot their Spring Summer14 collection before its release and couldn’t think of a better person to capture the elegance of the country’s first homegrown brand than Qatari fashion photographer Mohammed Nairooz – it’s a local collaboration of epic proportions! Don’t forget to check out our pick of the city’s hottest shopping havens and the happening social spots to eat and be seen in; this is Doha 101 for anyone wanting to learn how to live fabulously and fashionably in Qatar. 125 of Lanvin You’re invited on a journey through the times and trends of the oldest French fashion house still in business, founded by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889. Celebrate 125 years LANVIN by revisiting its fascinating history…
Journey through fashion
In 1889, on the corner of rue Boissy d’Anglas and rue du Faubourg SaintHonoré, Jeanne Lanvin founded her fashion house. Eight years later, her only daughter Marguerite Marie Blanche was born, and soon became her muse and main source of inspiration. Delighted with motherhood, the businesswoman had a brilliant new business idea: children’s wear. Little by little, she designed a wonderful wardrobe for Marguerite. Jeanne Lanvin had just invented children’s fashion. The shop’s customers, the mothers of the little girls who were in the same private class, fell instantly in love with the designs, asking Jeanne Lanvin to make the same outfits for their own children. Amid the excitement of the orders placed by her customers for their own daughters, Jeanne Lanvin opened a ‘Children’s Suits’ department in 1908. A year later, she opened the ‘Young Ladies and Women’s’ departments. Jeanne Lanvin joined the Syndicat de la Couture, the designers’ union, and entered into the very closed world of French Fashion Houses.

Viva Valentino Qatar takes over one of Paris’ favourite fashion houses. More than a year after the Qatari royal family’s luxury acquisition, the high fashion label loved by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn has cemented itself firmly, amidst previous rumors of trouble, with sales soaring through the roof. And with Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the design duo behind the brand, Valentino’s AW13 show proved to be just as glamourous and decadent as everfounder Valentino Garavani himself would be proud!

38
OHLALA!
A PRIME EXAMPLE of young and aspiring designers bursting out onto the scene here in the Middle East is Qatar based Toujouri, who’s been making waves since its launch back in 2008. Founded by Lama El Moatessem, a graduate of London College of Fashion & Central St. Martins School of Fashion, the stunning designer has proved herself on the local as well as international scene- the brand now can be found carried in fashion emporium Harrods as well as Harvey Nichols Riyadh and Dubai’s uber cool boutique Sauce to name a few. Here in Doha, Toujouri has made The Pearl home with its flagship boutique, a milestone in Qatar’s retail landscape, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Peter Marino, whose iconic store designs include the Louis Vuitton flagships in Paris and around the globe. Toujouri, which translates to “treasure
box” in Arabic, has brought together a medley of Middle Eastern eclecticism and an independent modern twist, with collection after collection spewing out an explosion of colour, pattern and fabrics, making it the brand’s signature DNA which it has become so famour for. This Spring Summer 14 the design aficianado, Moatessem, dug deep into her personal history to produce a line inspired by her Palestinian roots. With a palette of delicate pastels, A-line ball gowns and intricate embroidery this collection is the first chapter of a diary, which is set to continue with her Fall 2014 collection. And if this is anything to go by, we can’t wait to see what chapter two has to offer- until fall…

Settle in comfortably, fasten your seatbelt, start the engine and leave the world behind. The weather conditions outside your window no longer matter. It’s time to forget the ordinary and enjoy the carefully created First Class atmosphere. While others may share the same road, you cruise at a different altitude.
Dress Code Since opening her boutique and launching her brand in 2010, Aysha Said Al Bedded has made a name for herself among the discerning abayawearing women of the Gulf. Ohlala’s Josie Hill sits down for a one to one to find out why a Darz abaya is such a must-have piece. Meeting with Aysha, the founder, creator and designer behind Darz Designs, and it quickly becomes clear that behind her modest demeanour is someone who is passionate about her subject and proud, if not slightly over-whelmed by just how well it’s going. Now three years into business, Aysha has racked up three different awards to date from the MBC Most Talented Designer in the Middle East to the L’Officiel Arab Fashion Designer of the Year, and the ITP Arab Women Awards, Fashion Designer of the Year. So what is it about a Darz abaya that is so alluring? “The most important thing for me is that the abaya has to be something feminine, and something that I would wear myself,” says Aysha. “But also, I try to use different fabrics and different techniques to make Darz abayas both classic and yet contemporary. For example, we have this new machine which is the first one of its kind in Qatar, which does 3D embroidery. We also embroider our client’s names in Swarovski crystals inside the abaya.” The brand features four collections catering towards different clientle demands: Signature, Couture, Darz by Darz and Limited Editions. “Possibly the best complement I have ever had,” says Aysha, “is when people say they never throw one of our abayas away. So it’s a kind of must-have piece, like the little black dress.” Visiting the Darz Boutique off Salwa Road, and you’ll find much more than abayas on hangers and a changing room. The Boutique is somewhere to come and relax, have a coffee and a snack, and talk fashion and style with Aysha and her team. Find out more about Darz designs from www.darz-design.com

Global Takeover
Qatar makes its mark at London’s hottest addressKnightsbridge.
Considered a second home to most Middle Easterner’s who flock to the British capital in the summer to escape the sweltering heat of the Gulf, London has always been a favourite getaway amongst the Arab elite. And even though the buzzing city has an immense fashion scene with store after store filling up its busy streets, till this day there is no other place to shop in like Harrods. The fashion Mecca, which was purchased three years ago by the investment fund Qatar Holding, a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority, for a whopping QR6.2 million, has since given the fashion emporium a facelift by injecting a cool QR703 million into refurbishing, bringing new meaning to the word luxury overhaul. Whether it’s the influx of new labels that have been added or the modern updating of the Fine Watch Room and Beauty Apothecary, the new touches are big and noticeable. One thing though that was not there before is an obvious Qatari touch. Yes the new management has added a bit of eastern flair to the luxury store with the new addition of In-Q; an innovative retail experience that brings authentic Qatari culture to London. Following a design brief given by the Royal family of Qatar for a space that would reflect the cultural essence of the country, the first retail outlet of its kind to be initiated by Qatar Museums Authority abroad, offers an innovative shopping experience in the form of a store and café. Located on the second floor of the luxurious Harrods department store, visitors can learn all about Islamic culture in one place, where traditional arts and crafts, books, jewellery, and merchandise from Qatar’s world class museums and galleries will be on show and available to purchase. The adjoining intimate café offers an escape to the Gulf where one can sip on Arabic coffee and enjoy a medley of sweets made from Qatar’s famous Medjool dates all in a beautiful surrounding.

Street Style: mallari takes the shot Commercial stylist and fashion blogger Carla Mallari shares the secrets behind getting people to pose in her street style catablog of Qatar’s trendiest. “Mostly people respond in a really positive way - you say ‘hey I love your style’ and you throw them off guard and then they smile and then it leads me to say ‘can I take your photo?’” says Carla Mallari, of how she manages to grab those quirky shots of Doha’s trend-setters for her blog nomadstyle.tumblr.com. From an early interest in fine arts, Filipino born Mallari went on to study design at VCU specialising in fashion design, and has since started a fashion label, gone on to work as a 42

Having started her own fashion label on leaving university, Mallari realised that she did not necessarily have a market for the minimalist and futuristic clothes she was making, but that hasn’t put her off. Currently working on a project to design clothes for 2050’s style, Mallari says she would “like to create her own collection inspired by film”. “I
have taken what I’ve loved and applied it to my own music. I express myself without abiding to music theories.”
I remember when I was studying gemology in London; we were allowed to bring our iPods in while grading diamonds and I was listening to Sia’s “Day too Soon” album when I came across her song “Soon We’ll be Found” and was driven to tears in the middle of a gemology lab!” And it was perhaps also one the moments when it was clear that she should take the bold step of moving away from the family jewellery business and make a career out of music. Dana says she has been playing music as long as she can remember and wrote her first song after being tired of singing nursery rhymes like Humpty Dumpty which she says “were all a bit morbid”. “We had a small keyboard in my parent’s home which we used to tinker on as often as possible”, explains Dana, “and when we were younger, our mother used to take us to watch musicals and my sisters and I became obsessed and started performing them at home - we were like the Von Trapp family!” Dana lists Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Marina and the Diamonds as her influences. And although when she was writing she wasn’t entirely sure what her musical style was, she and her producer decided to have a blank canvas and see what transpired. She adds: “We decided that we were not going to dictate up front what the style was

going to be, we were going to get in the studio, sit there, work, and let the music organically grow. That then transformed into my very own album; a true representation of my inner being.” Dana also drew admiration for recording the album during the time she gave birth to her daughter Layla in London. She is also the first Qatari pop musician to produce an album and grab the headlines in such a positive way. Dana thanks her family, mum, husband and daughter for their support in making the

album and says, “without it none of this would be possible. When you get to do something you love, everyday, surrounded by the people most important to you, the strength, energy and focus materialize within you.” Performing in Doha for the first time Dana says her album launch event “was probably one of the most surreal experiences of her life”. “I stood up on that stage and poured my heart out to my family, friends and supporters and couldn’t have asked for a better response” www.ohlala-magazine.com
says the beautiful and inspirational young musician. Completely self-taught, you really cannot put Dana’s voice, lyrics or melodies in a box and call it pop, rock or the ever-vague label fusion. But have a listen yourself and you can only recognise what a talent she is, and undoubtedly too, an inspiration to other young musical hopefuls in the country today. Look out for her next concert which is due to be held this month at the Museum of Islamic Art.

TIME FOR SOME ME TIME After a massage, a hair consultation, cut and blow dry and a chat with Lucia Fashion Lounge owner and manager Eman Amnah Al Mushiri I can definitely say I’ll be recommending this place to my friends. Words by Josie Hill
Both easy to miss and hard to forget is how I would describe this one-stop shop for all your body and beauty needs. ‘Easy to miss’ because you can easily miss it on the road if you don’t know where to look, and it’s such a friendly, laid back and complete one-stop shop that you’ll miss it if you don’t return. Of course, for the same reasons it is equally hard to forget. Let me explain: I visited Lucia to try out the Balinese massage and get a hair consultation, a cut and a blow dry on a cool winter’s morning in Doha. The Lucia Villa which is on Haloul Street - before the Haloul R/A with 76
OHLALA!
the Wholesale Market behind you - is simple, stylish and most importantly, has everything a girl could need. I started off with the massage, given by Lucia’s Indonesian massage therapist Early Kartikasari, and found myself in the hands of a true expert. I’ve probably had about five massages in the last five years, and hands down this was one of, if not the best massage I’ve enjoyed in all that time. Why? Because I think you know when you are in the hands of an expert. This full body treatment, including the face and head, covered every point of my body and was just the right amount of firm and gentle. I could have drifted off on the massage table were it not for my hair appointment with Eman. And so it was that I explained my hair woes. “My hair’s all wrong,” I said, “my two-yearold grabs and pulls it out, I’ve got loads of split ends and it just looks really flat,” I said. So Eman and I talked hair, hair cuts, what would suit me, how to keep it in good condition, and style it for the day for a woman who doesn’t have a lot of time! “This is what I needed,” I thought, “someone who can offer more than just a cute cut and blow dry but who can understand my
hair, my concerns and my needs.” With an easy to manage style, a long bob, with an edgy look, sloped down towards each side and higher at the back, and a few layers to give it some body, I was, in a word, thrilled. And the price tag was actually less than I would have expected. Mine cost QR150, for a wash, then medium length hair cut into a shorter style, for a blow dry add QR50. But what I like about their price list is there are hair cuts for every budget in mind here. So, although now I won’t miss Lucia when I drive down that road, I will miss the wonderful treatment, the friendliness and the vibe – which I very much liked. Not too posh yet neat, clean, spacious, with expert attention to detail and a very professional service.

a car in its category. Perhaps another name for this car could be Family Ferrari, as the boot is spacious enough to accommodate pushchairs and family shopping! I started off the day with an introduction to the FF by a Ferrari Corse Pilota instructor, who showed me the entire car explaining the details. Beautiful car it is, inside and outside, modern, elegant and muscular at the same time, but you wouldn’t expect anything less of a Ferrari, would you? The interior is swathed in sublimely luxurious leather with chic and sophisticated trims and detailing, creating an impression of comfort and refined exclusivity. Next in turn was a theoretical lesson on how to best drive the car. I had of course done this before but it’s always good to get a refresher from a professional. I’m happy to say that I remembered the previous lesson pretty well and had even applied some of the techniques to my daily driving. (I just wish I was driving a Ferrari every day…) Next was an exhilarating spin around the circuit by the Corse Pilota, who really knows how
Diva Drives Ferrari FF

The wonderful thing about the FF is that it is as much a car for day-to-day driving with the family or friends, as it is for extraordinarily exclusive occasions, which demand an exotic car. You can drive easily and relaxed, or really push it to the limits.
i
t has been a while since my last review but when Ferrari calls I’ll follow! I have to confess – as some of you might remember from before – that I am biased towards Italian sports cars. They have that elegant and sexy attractiveness and pull that most other cars just can’t emulate. The name FF is inspired by the car’s four generous, body-hugging seats and, more significantly, the new Ferrari-patented fourwheel drive system. This makes the FF the most versatile of all Ferraris; you can drive it anywhere, in any weather or road conditions. Ferrari says that it has been designed specifically to tackle the toughest, most complex and ambitious of driving challenges, including snow, not that we have to worry about that in the GCC. In regards to the interior, it really is a proper four-seater and even tall people can sit on the rear seats comfortably without having to be contortionists. The FF also sets a new benchmark in terms of absolutely unprecedented cabin and luggage space for www.ohlala-magazine.com
www.ohlala-magazine.com
to demonstrate the absolutely awesome power, acceleration and speed delivery of the 6.3-litre V12 engine, with a whopping 651 horsepower. The FF has a top speed of 335km per hour and dashes from zero to 100-km per hour in just 3.7-seconds. Ferrari states that the FF is the world’s most powerful fourseater car, and who am I to argue that? Then the moment I had been waiting for came – time to get behind the wheel. Instead of driving on the circuit I was asked to take it out on the public roads to see how it is in the real world and I happily complied. The FF is a four-seater GT but drives like a dedicated two-seater sports car. It thrills on straight roads nearly as much as it does on curvaceous ones, as the V12’s wail rises and falls while you swiftly boom through the short-spaced gears. And as is usual for Ferraris, it turns heads on the road and opens the fast lane. The FF manages to be both practical and exotic at the same time, an accomplishment not so easy to achieve. It’s superbly comfortable to drive with amazing poise and capability. The wonderful thing about the FF is that it is as much a car for day-to-day driving with the family or friends, as it is for extraordinarily exclusive occasions, which demand an exotic car. You can drive easily and relaxed, or really push it to the limits. It is a car for all occasions, a car that dreams are made of. Can I have one please… OHLALA!

The top artistic endeavours in February
Turbulance: An exhibition by Mona Hatoum
Read, Read, Read, and then Write
Ohlala! Magazine sits down for a one to one with Qatari novelist Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud who explains the reasons for writing his first novel The Corsair, and his advice for future novelists to take up the pen.
A
ART, STRUCTURE AND ARCHITECTURE Ongoing until February 22 at Katara Gallery 2, Bldg 18 Turkish artist Canan Dağdelen explores from a sociological perspective the concepts of settling down, of social affiliation, permanent order, and finding a place for oneself by defining them in architectural terms. Through modular spheres that the artist calls “dots”, she reduces architectural structures to their smallest units and situates them in a given space. Canan was born in Istanbul in 1960 and studied Economics then Applied Arts in Vienna. 82

bdulaziz is a rarity in Qatar, being an engineer turned journalist turned novelist, of which there are very few - his first novel the Corsair has become one of the most read historical novels in the region. And having come this far, it is apparent that Abdulaziz has certainly found a new calling in life and a place from which he can inspire the next generation to love reading, and even, to become the Qatari novelists of tomorrow. He says: “I first thought about writing a history novel when I was out of work for a year in 2009. I was collecting all these history books and I knew that nobody would read a dry history book so I thought about converting the history into a novel. I had just bought a new laptop so I just started writing it.” So with just the first chapter and the main characters in mind, Abdulaziz put fingers to keys and tapped out the story. According to Abdulaziz to write a history novel there are two types of book you need to read – history books and heritage books, of stories that have traditionally been passed down orally from generation to generation. The Corsair is set in the 19th century, when the British Governor devises a plan to fight piracy and to wipe out the local Wahhabist opposition in Arabia - needless to say the scheme does not work. The novel was first published in Arabic in 2009 and in English a year later, and has since sold 8000 copies in the region, and is available at Virgin Bookstores across the Gulf.
Turbulance will run from February 7 at Mathaf Mona Hatoum’s Turbulence is the artist’s largest solo exhibition to date in the Arab world. It consists of more than 70 works ranging from large-scale room installations to smaller works on paper and sculptural objects. The exhibition is punctuated with a number of the artist’s photographs as well as documentations of early performances, highlighting the diversity of artistic undertakings that span the artist’s prolific three-decade oeuvre.
The Vienna Boys Choir Perfomance will be on March 1 and 2, 7.30pm at Katara Opera House Since it’s so early in March we are including this in February because we wouldn’t want you to miss out on hearing these sweet angelic voices at the Opera House. MISS OHLALA! Escapades of a single 20-something girl living in Doha. THE IDEALIST VS. THE STUPID?
I was home surfing through the channels when I came across a news report on Japanese television about how to stimulate love between goldfish. Apparently it is all in a nerve inside the female that decides within 30 seconds whether they want to mate with the male or not. The scientists said they are now trying to create the same experiment on humans, meaning that controlling who you fall in love with is actually something that may be manipulated in the near future. How much easier would that be? It’s fun to be single and (always) ready to mingle, but with Valentine’s Day coming up you can’t help but wonder if you’ve got it all wrong? On one hand I feel like an independent empowered woman. The alpha female focusing on my own growth and success, and believing that I will meet the right man that will choose to be with me because he appreciates all I have built for myself. I am holding out for an ultimate love story and truly believe that one should never settle until finding the man that fits as well as your favourite J Brand jeans - think John and Yoko as opposed to Kimye (eew!). Then on the other hand all I need is a phone call from my mother that shatters all of this. Now don’t get me wrong, my mother is a modern woman, who spent her teens in San Francisco in the 70’s and we all know what that means. But all she sees when she looks at me is a stupid girl wasting her youth and her better looking years slaving away in a strange little peninsula in the Middle East. Why can’t I just come home before all the good men are gone? “A man is defined by his career, and a woman’s success is measured by who she marries,” she tries to explain to me to my 98

complete horror - causing me to grimace more than I did watching The Red Wedding in the last season of Game of Thrones. And she wonders why I don’t call her enough… Similarly I bumped into my former boss a couple of weeks ago who asked me if I was married yet, when I said ‘No’ he told me an Arabic proverb that translates into “better the shadow of a man, then a shadow of a wall”. Gosh thanks for the advice, and sucking the romance right out of my little fantasy world. Needless to say, this man has a pretty little wife at home but is infamous for his love affairs. They are your typical ‘smug married couple’ (as Bridget Jones calls it) that will condescendingly tell you your wild ways are no good, but deep down he wishes he was the Wolf of Wallstreet and she wishes she had opted for the shadow of a wall. On second thought I just remembered exactly why I have chosen to be single and fabulous. Bring on the red lipstick, little black Herve Leger and my new loubies darling because this single girl is going to give Doha a run for its money (no pun intended!) this Valentine’s Day at every event in town. Ta ta, till next time. Miss Ohlala.
