Editor’s Letter

Come fly with me Albeit we all enjoyed the enchanting evenings of Ramadan, packed with warm invitations, mile long buffets and the tantalizing aromas of shisha filled tents, an escape of some sorts has definitely been up each and every one of our fabulous Saint Laurent sleeves. Eid has long been welcomed, long before it’s arrival, having us all book getaways to the travel destinations of the moment. For that, our fashion editors, inspired by their own agendas, put together the fundamental guide to holiday style; from chic-yet-functional essentials you’ll need during the flight to the must-have pieces to sport from St.Tropez all the way to the Kalahari desert. For those planning to pursuit the leisurely sport of shopping on their trip, this is one of the most exciting times of the fashion calendar! Yes, the pre-fall collections have hit the shelves so check out our breakdown of the key themes to look out for when it comes to next season. With sunny skies in the forecast a bronzed glow is always a nice accessory to a holiday look. That’s why, for the die-hard tan aficionados out there, we’ve compiled the industry’s best tricks to help you, not only get that Greek goddess glow, but to achieve it with as minimal damage possible to your skin. After all, the long-term plan is to age gracefully, no? With Doha emptying out nicely for Eid and events slowly frizzling out for the summer, catch up on the last big nights out from last month’s society scene. See who was out and about where, and you never know - you just might catch yourself peaking out from one of our pages! Dina Kabbani

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI

Visiting the gardens of Alhambra, Giambattista Valli’s collection was a sweet ode to the eclecticism of both the Moorish and Spanish roots of the state. Skirts were pencil thin and below the knee, paired with crop tops and tanks; beautifully simple and not forced. A simple elegance entirely sublimated, fitting with Valli’s much loved workmanship.

CHRISTIAN DIOR

This year’s show was a true testament as well as a lesson in the history of Haute Couture. Divided into 8 themes, the collection took us through a journey in fashion history lit up by techniques and modern savour faire, punctuated by the different historical periods.

VALENTINO Inspired by Pre-Raphaelite painters, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli brought back couture in its purest form. The duo sent off goddess gowns on the runway, with beautiful 21st-century interpretations of 19th-century Roman togas. Pairing them with gladiator sandals laced up to the knees, the dresses symbolized an air of youthfulness and ease, endearing to an Haute Couture collection. www.ohlala-magazine.com

ARMANI PRIVE

Taking inspiration from the Lady in Red, Giorgio Armani showed everyone that he really knew his way around the colour, sending off red vinyl strips studded with rhinestones and beautiful A-line jackets that swayed off the shoulders of his waive like models.

Focusing on after dark, Elie Saab produced a collection of tone-on-tone embroidered numbers guaranteed to be snatched up by Hollywood darlings for the season’s red carpet events. Our favourite was a sweeping ball gown in pink with tiny blue embroidery that really stood out.

The view of Downtown Miami

MIAMI VICE Beach life, cool architecture and a budding art scene; there really is no place like Miami. Nicholas Chrisostomou checks in to the city’s hotspots, giving us the inside scoop on where to go, what to eat and how to do it all in style!

N

ot since the transformation of Miami Beach from a moth-eaten retirement enclave and narcotics war zone into a celebrity playground has the city undergone such development as it has during the past five years. But whilst South Beach is known as the fashion, glamour and style epicentre of Florida, the Miami of 2014 is notable for an altogether different reason. One word: Art. The Miami of 2014 is artistic, cutting edge and original, and this creative energy has saturated the city. Nowhere is Miami’s cultural renaissance more evident than in funky arts hub, Wynwood, which since 2009 has been transformed from a gritty warehouse district and homeless encampment into a vibrant 54

The Macan Turbo is in absolutely no way a compromise between lifestyle and fun, it is the fastest vehicle in its compact SUV segment boasting a 3.6L, V6, twin-turbo 400 horsepower engine it can reach 0 to 100km/h in 60 mph in a mere 4.0 seconds! The 2014 Porsche Macan rides smoothly and handles extremely well. With plenty of driving options to select from on the console, you can cruise down the Corniche by hitting the energy efficiency button to save on fuel consumption. Want to have some fun? Hit the Sport Plus button and hold on! The electronic engine management system will switch the engine mapping to offer an even sharper response

and engine dynamics that are more direct, meaning fast gear changes, more power and sharper turning (great for avoiding any heart stopping roundabout moments!). The 2014 Porsche Macan has LED headlights and taillights that look fantastic and use 75 per cent less energy than halogen and xenon headlamps. The full panoramic sunroof gives a full view of the skyline as you drive around the city, a great way to keep little passengers busy in the backseat cloud watching during the day and stargazing at night. Inside the Macan is a world of luxury, with contemporary styling that is attractive and very comfortable. In the centre of the console is a sizeable touch screen for the infotainment system, under it a series of buttons for the screen, climate control and drive control. The Porsche Car Connect accesses apps from your Smartphone and displays them on the Macan’s media screen. Get real-time traffic and weather updates and find the fastest route with the on board Navigation system. The interior includes an 8-way power seat for the driver, two-zone climate control (with an optional third zone for backseat passengers), and an amazing sounding Bose sound system, making this Porsche even more fun. After the day of driving the Macan Turbo I definitely did not want to give it back! Porsche have managed to give the spirit of a sports car to a more practically sized vehicle, giving you speed and power, but also allowing your friends to be able to sit in the backseat and experience it with you! www.ohlala-magazine.com

MISS OHLALA! Escapades of a single 20-something girl living in Doha. The date that wasn’t

Okay I must admit I have been on many disastrous dates in my time. Like the guy who brought a date on our date, or the one that fell asleep. I honestly thought I had experienced it all, until I met HIM right here in Doha, who raised the bar for the terms “epic fail” forever. We met at happy hour in Waham on a casual Friday afternoon. My judgment was highly impaired as I had just come up from brunch at Spice Market, but I could have sworn he was charming and a real gentlemen. So later when he took my number from a common friend and called me up for a breakfast date, I said yes! I woke up early to wash my hair and look pretty and fresh when he picked me up at 10am as planned on a Saturday morning. He sent me a text at about 9:45am apologizing for he had just woken up and hence would be a little late. A little late got a lot longer when he couldn’t find my apartment and was lost for another half hour. Finally around noon, he picked me up. Flinging my hair and ready to start off our date I opened the door to sit in the passenger seat, to have him he scream, “No! You can’t sit there. Please sit at the back as the seat is soaking wet!” I did as I was told and sat at the back and was chauffeured around by my date. The only thing he said to me during the awkward drive was what an unexpected rough night he had yesterday and how sick he was feeling. Prince charming… We decided to have lunch at Cucina at the Renaissance since we missed breakfast anyway, it must have been 1pm by then. To my horror as we walked to the restaurant one of his shoes fell apart, he apologized and explained that he had to take them out of the garbage as the rest of his stuff was in boxes 90

OHLALA!

(excellent so he’s also homeless?!) “Awkward” silence would be an understatement as we sat there waiting for our hops and pizza. I finally started to enjoy myself and was chatting at him while he stared at me in silence. And then he finally spoke, “do you have a couch?” emmm “yeah?” I said afraid of what was coming next. He then signaled for the waiter to come and asked for our food in doggy bags (mind you I was in mid bite). Apparently he had decided that he wanted to spend the day laying on my couch watching movies. We stood outside the restaurant and I told him to please go home (that’s if he has one), and walked away through the passage way to City Center mall where I was safe from him and burst into hysterical laughter for a good 20 minutes. Needless to say he never called me again, and I am yet to bump into him in little Doha. Epic fail? I say almost as humiliating as Germany’s defeat on Brazil in the world cup semi-finales. Ta ta, till next time. Miss Ohlala!
