ISSUE 21• AUGUST 2022
AUGUST 2022 AUTUMN 2020 Summer is in full swing, which means spending more time outdoors, planning alfresco dinners and taking time to unwind and swim in the island’s crystal blue seas! Malta offers a tapestry of summer experiences that can’t be matched: from idyllic beaches and quaint villages to exciting cuisines and music festivals. Malta has a long history of village feasts, which are an extremely big part of the local culture. The festa season in Malta reaches its peak in mid-August, when everyone comes together to celebrate the feast of Santa Marija, which is celebrated in over eight different towns and villages. In this issue we look into the history of the celebration and how it is connected to the most crucial historical moments of the World War II. Apart from the traditional festas, nothing screams summer more than a day at the beach. In this issue we take a closer look at some of Malta and Gozo’s hidden beaches. We explore both islands as we make our way to some of these beautiful secluded spots away from the hustle and bustle, which may be a little bit difficult to access, but totally worth the hike. There's much more to explore, so sit back, relax and enjoy the Maltese summer ride! We couldn't be happier to welcome you!

jobs faced challenging times due to reduced
travel around the world caused of the pandemic. However, from the very first days of this unexpected socio-economic storm, the Maltese Government’s plan was to assist and offer the necessary assistance to prepare for a crucial recovery that we have started observing around us within the past months. Our strategy was based on investing heavily on marketing, training and sigificantly air connectivity. The war on Ukraine poised to be another international headache both on foreign airlines and airports due the unprecedented increase in fuel prices. Notwithstanding these aysmetric shocks, in June 2022 85% of air connectivity that we had before the pandemic was secured from and to the Malta International Airport.
Malta’s tourism optics are now focused on the ongoing priority that being the recovery stage. The second step is to undergo a thorough analysis of nowadays’s tourism demands and adopt accordingly. Thirdly, a total revitalization aimed at revitalizing the Maltese hospitality sector. Our aim needs to be continue beeing that of nurturing the principles of quality and quanity together within Malta’s tourism product. This needs to be exactly the mentality for the upcoming years. The emphasis on striking a balance between volumes and quality needs to be a consenual priority. Quality is not just luxury but needs to be a satisfactory mandatory requisite in a tourist’s daily experience in Malta.

This August, Malta celebrates the Feast of Santa Marija, an important occasion in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox calendars, and a thriving cultural celebration across Malta and Gozo. Taking place in early to mid-August and also known as the Feast of Our Lady of Assumption, the festival reaches its climax on 15 August and celebrates the ascension of the Virgin Mary to heaven. Known to Eastern Orthodox practitioners as the Dormition — or, “falling asleep”, signifying Mary’s peaceful ascension to heaven — of the Mother of God, the Feast of Santa Marija holds special significance in the Christian tradition, and especially so in Malta. Not confined to a purely religious affair, the feast is marked by a public holiday across the Maltese islands, this year falling on the third Monday in August. As a country with a long and established history of Christianity, Malta’s devotion to this particular feast remains strong to this day, with many towns and cities across the archipelago going to considerable lengths to celebrate a day which marks the closing

vitally needed supplies of food and medicine were unable to reach Maltese ports. On 15 August 1942, however, Malta's prayers were answered, with five ships out of a convoy’s original fourteen successfully docking at Valletta’s Grand Harbour, bringing with them supplies imperative to the island’s survival. This, unsurprisingly, was seen as especially significant in the context of the day’s Santa Marija celebrations, and remains to this day a shining beacon of deliverance by one of the island’s most beloved saints and a powerful affirmation of the country’s faith. For those visiting Malta during the 15 August celebrations, the islands offer a wealth of unique cultural experiences, with street parties and special religious ceremonies taking place across the country. On the 15th, a special ‘Marian Mass’ is held, following which a statue of Mary is carried out of churches and taken in procession through the streets. It is traditional for crowds to follow, singing and praying in celebration as the statue makes its way through the town. Finally, the day culminates in countrywide evening events, including firework displays and musical concerts — showing the Feast of Santa Marija to not only be an important religious and cultural event, but a fun and popular cause for celebration across the entirety of Malta.

internationally renowned firework factories.Interestingly, quarries surround the village of Mqabba. Thus, it constitutes more than a quarter of the island's supply of construction materials, making construction the town's primary industry. The presence of archaeological relics nearby demonstrate the significance of Mqabba. Particularly in the quarries at ‘Ta' Kandja’ and "Tax-Xantin," remains of extinct animals were discovered. Additionally, burials from the late prehistoric Neolithic to the Tarxien periods were discovered in a natural cave on the outskirts of Mqabba, in a cave in "Bur Meghez," next to TanNaxxari Quarry.
The St. Mary Fireworks Factory produces some of the most sought-after fireworks, mesmerising locals during the parish feast, which is held between 8 and 15 August. The fireworks committee won the inaugural Malta International Fireworks Festival in 2006, and in 2007, after competing against seven of the most successful firework companies in the world. Every year, during the third week of June the secondary feast—the Feast in Honour of Our Lady of Lilies— fireworks displays take place. Each day of the feast has a ground and aerial fireworks spectacular. While there is a sense of competitiveness between the two feasts, locals come together to take

Pjazza Teatru Rjal was opened in 1866, and designed by the renowned British architect Edward Middleton Barry, a leading figure in 19th century Britain who, amongst his many projects, is credited with London’s Covent Garden Opera House and adjacent glass and iron-framed Floral Hall. Built in a classical style — utilising symmetry and prominent use of pillars — and known at the time as the Royal Opera House or Royal Theatre,
The renovation project was completed five years later, with the completed building inaugurated on 8 August 2013. Today, the site houses a large open-air performance space enclosed within the original structure’s remaining pillars, as well as several underground rehearsal and storage rooms. Since its reopening, Pjazza Teatru Rjal — as it is referred to today (translated to “Royal Theare Square”) — has hosted numerous local and international artists, featuring opera, dance, music and other performances. The theatre sees particular use throughout the summer months, when audiences enjoy the various shows on offer in the cooler evening air. The remainder of this summer will see Pjazza Teatru Rjal continue to host various performances of the Malta Concert Orchestra, including an Elton John Tribute show on 5 August and James Bondthemed performance on 26 August, as well as a ‘Golden Oldies’ the building rapidly established itself as an important opera venue, not just in Malta, but across Europe. A prospective opera star’s success at Valletta’s Royal Opera House would likely lead to other engagements on the continent, preparing them for further performances at opera houses in Milan and London. Such was the respect for Valletta’s premier theatrical venue, that divas and divos from across Europe would travel to Malta’s capital in a bid to launch successful international careers.

The theatre will also present a concert dedicated to Maltese Independence Day on 21 September, and a performance as part of the city’s Notte Bianca festival — a large-scale celebration of art and culture taking place across Valletta on 1 October. Attendees can expect to see performers from a wide variety of artistic disciplines, street events boosted by extended bar and restaurant opening hours and flocks of tourists and locals alike eager to experience the city’s premier annual cultural event. structure’s exterior pillars and stone base partially remaining. The majority of the surviving building was demolished in the 1950s due to safety concerns, with only parts of the terrace and parts of the columns left intact — the sole remnants of a once famed European cultural landmark. The site was left in this state for over half a century, until, in 2006, the Maltese government began engaging in discussions to redevelop the area, with initial plans proposing using the site as the basis for a new parliament building. Following numerous rejected proposals, in 2008 the Maltese government under the then-Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi revived the project, enlisting the famed Italian architect, Renzo Piano, who successfully convinced the government to instead redevelop the site into an open-air theatre, and renovate the city gates located close by.

GreenServ inaugurated its first urban greening project in Mosta less than a year since it first announced the project. A dilapidated land spanning almost 4,000 square metres that was previously inaccessible has now been transformed into a vibrant and green public space. Today, this garden accommodates a diversity of activities providing interest and amenity for residents. A playground, an outdoor gym, a fitness trail, a vegetable plot and a relaxation area have all been integrated seamlessly in a clever way. Indeed, social dimension, urban vitality and environmental sustainability were at the core of the design process. The design of the garden revolved around the mature olive trees that were already there. This led to winding pathways dotted with benches intently placed under the blissful shade of the trees to provide a break from the heat. A natural material was chosen for the pathways that will, through time, blend with the soil without causing any damage to vegetation and yet blend further with the surroundings. The playground and fitness equipment is made of timber that originates from sustainable forests while the rubber flooring used in the play area is made from fully recycled rubber chips. Solar panels were also installed on the canopy area that has been finished with recyclable decking. This is a garden that seeks to create and strengthen social connections. While encouraging active exercise and play, it is also a place where one can rest, read a book and enjoy a conversation. The canopy area will encourage learning in a different setting away from classrooms and halls while lending itself to different community activities. A vegetable plot intended to encourage communal gardening activities will also provide opportunities for people to learn whilst promoting healthier lifestyles. Named after the revered paediatric oncologist Dr. Victor Calvagna, who lost his life in a tragic road accident, this garden is meant to honour the founding member, President and driving force behind one of Malta’s most active charitable institutions, the Puttinu Cares Foundation. Ġnien Victor Calvagna will certainly have an influence over the social dimension as it seeks to generate a positive use of the space by shaping community ties, and stimulating interaction between people and the environment. It is meant to provide a green space that residents could enjoy in close proximity to their homes. A Little Crush OH MY MALTA
