The Okanagan College Alumni Association (OCAA) organizes events and establishes programs to support graduates and students of Okanagan College and its predecessor, Okanagan University College. The OCAA provides opportunities for you - and all alumni - to connect with fellow grads, continue learning and to build strong networks throughout our communities. Your story is truly our story. Message from the Board Chair and the President Through 60 years, OC’s alumni have been making a profound impact on our institution and the broader community. Our alumni are a vital thread in the fabric of Okanagan College’s history, and they continue to shape our future. Their commitment to our values and their accomplishments in various fields serve as a testament to the quality of education our institution provides. The influence of OC alumni extends far beyond our campuses. They are leaders, innovators, and change-makers in their respective professions, making a positive mark on our community. Many of them have established businesses in our region and beyond, contributed to innovations, and are involved in giving back to those in the communities where they live. The support and engagement of OC alumni amplifies our mission, and their involvement in mentorship, internships and networking opportunities provide current students with invaluable resources for personal and professional growth. To all Okanagan College alumni: Thank you. Aaron Gregory Business Development Associate, Energy & Environment, Calgary Economic Development OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, 2014–2019

While attaining his International Development Management diploma and Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Aaron was an active member, and later president, of Enactus Okanagan College, a non-profit organization that enables student leaders to positively impact local communities through social, economic and environmental projects. In 2017, he won the Kelowna and District Jaycees Building Leaders Worth Following Award, which recognizes students who have demonstrated a commitment to leadership in their community. Continuing to give back to his community today, Aaron, is an active board member with the Creston Valley Community Foundation, which has generated over $40 million dollars of investment into local businesses to help create and maintain local jobs and contribute to a prosperous Kootenay region. He is also an Okanagan College Foundation donor and board member with the Canadian Foundation for the Children of Haiti and started the Paige Whitelaw & Carlee De Boer Memorial Therapist Assistant Award to honour the passing of his friends.


Adam Relvas Chef and Owner, Relvas Catering/ The Sandwich Company by Relvas Catering OC Program of Study: Culinary Arts (Red Seal), 2003–2005

Voted Top Chef in the North Okanagan by Okanagan Life Magazine in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and Chef of the Year in 2018 and 2022 by the Okanagan Chefs Association (OCA), Adam grew up in the South Okanagan and gained a passion for food through many food focused family events. Upon finishing school, Adam completed his apprenticeship at Ricardo’s Mediterranean Kitchen in Lake Country and has since been able to work at some of the top hotels, wineries and restaurants in the valley before starting his own businesses, The Sandwich Company and Relvas Catering, the latter named a Top 3 catering company in the Central Okanagan in 2017 by Okanagan Life Magazine. Adam currently sits on the OCA board as the young chef director and is heavily involved in giving back to his community. In addition to helping raise funds for Ronald McDonald House and Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, he assisted the local food bank with its Bake the World a better place campaign, and for 12 years has helped a local church provide free meals on Christmas Day to those in need.


Aishwarya Tyagi Civil Technologist, D.E. Pilling & Associates OC Program of Study: Civil Engineering Technology, 2016–2018

Aishwarya moved to Canada on her own in 2015 at the age of 18. She put herself through school by working two jobs while taking eight courses. Employed as a civil engineering technologist at D.E. Pilling & Associates and part-time volunteer youth worker at BGC Okanagan, Aishwarya is currently enrolled in the Civil Engineering Bachelor of Applied Science program at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. She obtained a 95 percent average in the Okanagan College to UBC Okanagan Civil Engineering Bridge program and, with a 93.4 percent average, was on the UBC Okanagan Dean’s List in 2022. Aishwarya has logged 100 volunteer hours at BGC Okanagan and, in July 2023, competed in a powerlifting competition. In addition to power lifting, her hobbies include hiking, biking and poetry.


Ajowah Lindsay (AJ) Supervisor, Paladin Security Group Ltd. OC Program of Study: Criminal and Social Justice, 2017–2020

Working as the security supervisor for Paladin Security at Okanagan College, Ajowah holds a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education from the Mico University College in Jamaica and a diploma in Criminal and Social Justice from Okanagan College. She is passionate about serving and being a tower of strength to whomever she comes in contact with. Ajowah was recently awarded the Unwavering Heroism Award from the Canadian Security Lifesaver Association which recognizes recipients for true acts of kindness, selflessness and bravery, resulting in the greatest achievement of all: saving a human life. Hailing from the beautiful country of Jamaica, Ajowah often assists OC’s International Department in sharing her personal college experience at various student information sessions or assisting new international students with questions relating to school, housing and social life.


Amanda Shatzko Director and Vice-Chair, RDNO; Graduate Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant, University of British Columbia; President, AS Consulting and Art OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Fine Arts, 2004–2005

Born and raised in the Okanagan, Amanda is an artist, politician, athlete and social scientist working at the intersection of creativity and leadership. She is a current two-term elected official, serving as the director of BX SilverStar and vice-chair of the Regional District of North Okanagan. Active in her community, Amanda is president of Impact Toolbox, trustee for the North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District, vice-chair of the BC Alliance for Arts and Culture, and senator for the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Previously she served as trustee for the Okanagan Regional Library, president of the Arts Council of the North Okanagan, vice-president of the United Nations Association in Canada Vancouver Branch, and director for the Municipal Finance Authority. Amanda is also a Vital Voices, FCM Municipalities for Climate Innovation, Banff Forum and Royal Society of Arts fellow. She received the BC Lieutenant Governor Award and Queens Platinum Jubilee Medal and has been named one of Canada’s Top 100 most powerful women (Women’s Executive Network), BC’s Change Maker & Woman of the Year (BC Business), BC’s Top 40 Under 40 (Business in Vancouver) and Multicultural Community Champion.


Amanda Wright Financial Controller, Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna Branch OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Accounting, 2011–2015

A chartered professional accountant, Amanda is proud to be giving back to her community as the financial controller for the Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna Branch. With a strong focus on leadership through growth and coaching, she is committed to driving process improvement and system implementation. As a part of the Okanagan College Honours program, she completed the initial research study for the Scotiabank Centre for Non-profit Excellence, with a focus on sustainability gaps for social service organizations in the Central Okanagan. She has served as board member for United Way, Telemark Nordic Club and OGO Car Share, and taught as an accounting professor at Okanagan College. An avid skier and road cyclist, Amanda immigrated from Australia and has lived in Kelowna for 16 years.


Ben Klick Artist/Musician, Klick Entertainment OC Program of Study: Audio Engineering and Music Production, 2014–2015

A touring artist, musician and songwriter, Ben Klick is a five-time British Columbia Country Music Association (BCCMA) winner. Named the 2022 BCCMA Interactive Artist of the Year, Klick picked up his first guitar at the age of four and has played in all types of venues and events from coffee shops to large Canadian outdoor festivals. In addition to volunteering his time to perform at Okanagan College and local charity events, Ben founded Music Fest MS, a charity fundraiser on behalf of the MS Society of Canada. In 2022, Ben won the Best of Kelowna Gold Award in the band/musician category. Currently living in Nashville, TN, for half of the year, Ben enjoys golfing, wakeboarding, spending time with family and snowboarding.


Cale Tiessen Secondary School Teacher Candidate OC Program of Study: Recreation Vehicle Service Technician Apprenticeship (Red Seal), 2011–2014 Following high school graduation, Cale went to work at his father’s company, KMS Tools, in Kamloops. There he managed the warehouse, eventually moving into the sales department. Cale moved on to pursue Red Seal certification through Okanagan College’s Recreation Vehicle (RV) Technician Apprenticeship program where he earned a bursary award during his foundation year. Cale’s teachers at Okanagan College, Jim Ingram, Adam Rosseel, and John Itterman, made a lasting impression, not only as teachers, but as great examples. From there, he began a career with Enterprise RV, working under the leadership of Darrin Grams, Ed Roelofs and Allan Stefanik. With the lessons learned in the RV industry, and newly married to his wife Naomi, the couple moved back to Kamloops where Cale managed his father’s tool company. Under his leadership, the franchise broke record sales. After his father sold the company back to KMS Tools, Cale left the company to work for Mr. Mobile RV. After working through the pandemic on RVs, Cale returned to KMS Tools, but this time as a consultant to the management team. Acknowledging the impact of strong professional examples along the way, his journey has led him down a new learning path. With the Red Seal certification earned from Okanagan College, Cale applied for the Bachelor of Education in Trades and Technology program through Thompson Rivers University. Now, in School District 73 as a teacher, Cale is inspired to set his own example for the adults of tomorrow on what it means to be a leader in the community.


Choi Leong 2023 Graduate OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Data Science, 2019–2023

Quickly finding success in Okanagan College’s Bachelor of Business Administration program, Choi credits OC’s faculty and student community for creating an academically supportive environment that emphasizes the importance of connection. Since graduating in June 2023, he is focused on finding work in the investment banking industry and giving back to the community, whether it is working with students, supporting alumni, or working with various community organizations in Kelowna. Outside of classes, Choi was involved in the Okanagan College Student Investment Fund (OCSIF), which launched in 2022, and participated in the CFA Research Challenge, both of which give students experiential learning opportunities in the financial sector. He was also a student member of the College’s Board of Governors during his final two years of studies.


Chris Braun Chef, Erica Jane OC Program of Study: Culinary Arts (Red Seal), 2005–2008

Chris grew up on a hobby farm in the Okanagan, where producing heirloom fruits and vegetables gave him an early understanding and passion for farm-to-table dining. He began cooking at an early age with his grandmother, starting his first restaurant job at Kelowna’s Earls on Top when he was just 14. Having apprenticed under Monika Lauterbacher at the Coast Capri Hotel, Chris worked his way through the Okanagan Valley honing his craft, along the way developing a passion for competition. His culinary journey included opening The Curious Café and working with Rod Butters at Raudz Creative Concepts. He recently opened Erica Jane, a legacy restaurant created by the late Reg Henry in memory of his daughter. Chris has received the Okanagan Chef’s Association (OCA) President’s Award, been voted Best Chef in the Okanagan by Now Magazine, and is in the Great Canadian Kitchen Party and Gold Medal Plates winner’s circle. Active on the OCA board, he has spent time with the culinary team and volunteers for various charities throughout the region, including Chefs in the Classroom.


Christina Ferreira Owner, Impact Events and Project Management Inc. OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing, 1995–2000

After working in marketing and events for a small local non-profit, Christina founded Impact Events in 2008 and has since grown the business from a solo side business to a small agency with three employees. Her company’s portfolio focuses on three major sectors including hospitality, tourism, non-profit/charity and new residential real estate. With more than 20 years of experience in event production, communications, public relations and marketing, Christina brings a depth of experience and industry awareness that enables a deep understanding of her clients’ vision, goals and objectives. In addition to managing a varied event portfolio, Impact Events also owns five large community festival-style events. Impact Events has been recognized several times as a top event planning company in Kelowna. For the past 23 years, Christina—who has been recognized as a business leader and influencer—has been a volunteer board member for a variety of organizations, including the Okanagan College Alumni Association.


Cynthia Hernández Garcia Spanish Lecturer, Okanagan College and University of British Columbia OC Program of Study: English as a Second Language, 2000–2003; Bachelor of Business Administration, Hospitality & Tourism, 2003–2008; Teaching English as a Second Language, 2012

Twenty-three years ago, Cynthia left her home country of Mexico to study English as a Second Language in Kelowna. During her time as a student, Cynthia worked as a teacher assistant and Spanish conversation coordinator in the Modern Languages Department. In 2008, Cynthia graduated from the Bachelor of Business Administration program with a minor in Hospitality and Tourism. From there she worked for approximately three years in the tourism industry and then returned to her passion, education, working in various departments at Okanagan College, but mainly in the International Education Department as an international student liaison. After completing her Teaching English as a Second Language certificate, she was inspired to pursue a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and eventually answered her calling to become a Spanish teacher. A founder of the Okanagan Mexican Folklore Dance Group, Cynthia volunteers her time promoting the richness of the Mexican culture through dance at different cultural events throughout the region.


Daniel Alfred Senior Marketing Account Manager, Crew Marketing Partners OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing, 2013–2016

With a key specialty in marketing for professional service, non-profit and food clients, Daniel builds marketing strategies for a wide range of clients and then oversees project rollout and execution from ideation to completion. His day-to-day role also includes managing a large team and leading client relationships and new business development. Prior to joining Crew, he worked in marketing and sales in the pet food industry, and as the business development director at Martketer Inc. When not marketing, Daniel spends time growing and managing his coowned vineyard and wedding venue, 99 Rows, located in Lake Country. Through Enactus Okanagan College, he founded and developed the curriculum for Silver Surfers, a student-run social enterprise designed to reduce levels of isolation in seniors. An accomplished musician, Daniel volunteers throughout the community, including weekly through Trinity Church Kelowna as a drummer for weekend services. Having graduated with honours, his achievements include Okanagan College’s Dean’s List, securing first place at the Enactus Canada Regionals and receiving Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver awards.


Dr. Darcie Weglo Chiropractor/Owner, Creekside Dynamic Health OC Program of Study: Science University Studies, 2001–2003

Following studying sciences at Okanagan College, Darcie graduated with distinction from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She worked her final year in a master’s program before being accepted to the prestigious Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. She completed her rigorous Doctor of Chiropractic degree with academic honours in 2011. Now owner of Creekside Dynamic Health, she has worked as an instructor at Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy, teaching therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation. Voted a local Top 40 under 40, Darcie sees patients of all ages, but has a particular interest in working with seniors to maintain athleticism through the ages, as well as with athletes in the areas of injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance enhancement.


Darrien McWatters Operations Manager, Time Family of Wines Ltd. OC Program of Study: General Arts, 1994–1996 Managing production, planning and distribution for award-winning Time Family of Wines, Darrien has been working in the BC wine industry for over 25 years. Along with her sister, she was voted 2022’s Top 10 Most Inspiring People in Wine by Wine Industry Network. An advocate for the 2SLGBTQAI+ community, Darrien has raised funds for organizations such as Etcetera Youth Kelowna, where those, and allies of those, ages 11 to 18 who are 2SLGBTQIA+ or questioning their gender can connect with supportive peers; RADAR Youth Penticton, which provides a safe, positive and social space for youth of all identities ages 12 to 18; and Friends of Dorothy Langley Youth Hub, an inclusive and safe space on the Lower Mainland for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth ages 12 to 24. Selected to participate in Hockey Canada’s Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Task Force and BC Hockey’s EDI working group, Darrien is highly active in BC Hockey, winning Summerland Minor hockey Coach of the Year (2012–13) and Penticton Minor Hockey Most Dedicated Official (2023). A former volunteer firefighter in Summerland (1998–2021), Darrien hopes to reach as many people as possible by sharing her personal story of discovery and transitioning from male to female as a transgender person. She sponsors the Summerland Secondary School and Pen-High Secondary “Team Trans Okanagan” bursary, an annual $500 award given to a graduating student who self-identifies as part of, or is a strong ally of, the 2SLGBTQAI+ community.


David Knapp Director of National Business Development, CIBC OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, 2001–2003

After ten years in the tourism industry, David embarked on a career in financial services while completing his Bachelor of Business Administration. Progressive roles followed, including personal banker, mortgage advisor, branch manager and business development manager. From there, opportunities to explore new roles in start-up business development and community foundation leadership added new perspectives and experiences. He later returned to the financial services industry where he is now the director of national business development at CIBC where he supports frontline teams and leaders from coast-tocoast. In June 2023, David completed a Master in Leadership from Royal Roads University. In addition to his role at CIBC, he is a term professor at Okanagan College, teaching in the business faculty. Over the years, David has volunteered on committees at United Way and Habitat for Humanity, and served as a board member for the Downtown Kelowna Association and Centre for Spiritual Living.


Debra Idzan Former Library Clerk (retired), Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Health Care Assistant, 1988; Associate of Arts Degree, 1997

Once her children were all in school, Debra attended Okanagan College as a mature student to build her skillset and prepare herself for future employment. Starting with the Health Care Assistant certificate program, she later returned to take the Associate of Arts degree program parttime while raising her family and working. After completing her program over the course of several years, three courses per semester, Debra graduated with honours. Her career began as a library page in the Okanagan College Library, eventually working her way up to library clerk, while also working part-time in the campus general office and bookstore. Throughout her time with the college, Debra worked as an exam invigilator, tutor and continuing studies teacher. Debra took pride in helping students, staff and the public. After 25 years, she retired but worked on-call intermittently for three more years. In addition to her professional life, Debra volunteered with several organizations including the Catholic Women’s League, Salmon Arm Refugee Society, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues, and OC Student Services where she participated in a student outreach, college welcoming and fundraising events. She also engaged with the Shuswap Foundation to create a bursary award for OC students in trades and vocational programs in memory of her son, who was an OC Trades alumnus.


Denise Martell Marketing Director, World Financial Group (WFG) OC Program of Study: Dental Office Administration, 1995; Education Assistant, 2007

Denise is a financial professional and entrepreneur who has dedicated over 11 years to helping families achieve their goals and dreams. She found her passion for helping others while advocating for her son, realizing that a strong financial foundation, including access to the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), would enable him to lead a full inclusive life in the community. The recipient of the WFG Leadership Award and voted Top 40 over 40 by BDO LLP and the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce in 2023, Denise believes her personal experiences, postsecondary teaching, and education assistant backgrounds have been invaluable to her success. She is committed to promoting safe and secure futures for people with disabilities through financial education, estate planning and implementation of the RDSP program. Her extensive volunteerism has spanned many organizations throughout the Okanagan including City of Kelowna, Victory Life Church, Trinity Baptist Church, Level Up, PLAN Okanagan, Launch Okanagan, School District No. 23 and Sweet Smiles Society.


Domenic Rampone Business Development Officer, West Manufacturing Ltd. OC Program of Study: Business Administration, 1974–1976

A business development officer for West Manufacturing Ltd., Domenic worked as a senior accountant for the Regional District of the Central Okanagan for 35 years. His business development consulting client list includes Mara Lumber Ltd., International Coliseums, Jealous Fruits and DKL Financial. Committed to making an impact in his community, Domenic has held numerous volunteer positions throughout the community, including vice president for the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, where he was honoured as Director of the Year; treasurer for the Okanagan Heritage Museum; vice chair, Economic Development, for Westbank First Nation; and member of the board, City of Kelowna Agricultural Advisory Committee. In addition to his business background, Domenic has scouted for a number of junior hockey teams and is the local manager for Lakeland Super Camps.


Donna Mbamy-Conci Registered Pharmacist, Juris Doctor Candidate OC Program of Study: Sciences, 2018–2019

Donna is a passionate advocate for justice and healthcare equality. From a young age, she and her father shared the dream of her pursuing a career as a lawyer. Later in life, she became inspired by her mother’s work as a pharmacist. As she delved into the world of pharmaceuticals, she discovered the significance of patient advocacy and optimal healthcare. After completing one year of sciences at Okanagan College, she was accepted into Dalhousie University’s College of Pharmacy program. A year into pharmacy school, Donna realized she needed a secondary platform to fight for justice and address healthcare inequalities, which also reflected the racial obstacles she and her family faced. She decided to pursue her original dream of becoming a lawyer while completing her pharmacy degree and enrolled in Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law, where she successfully balanced the demands of studying both professions. Now, as a registered pharmacist and soon-to-be lawyer, she is eager to merge her knowledge and skills to seek justice for patients, healthcare providers, and the community at large.


Elizabeth Hernandez Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Interior Health; Educator, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: General Arts, 2009–2011

When Elizabeth started her journey at Okanagan College in 2009, she was an adult upgrading student with a dream of changing the world for the better. Once she began college-level courses, Elizabeth was inspired by her Okanagan College psychology professors to pursue a career working with vulnerable populations. Her journey led to a diploma in psychiatric nursing, a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a Master of Arts in learning and technology. As a mental health nurse, Elizabeth has worked to improve the systems that support geriatric, medical and mental health patients across the Okanagan. Elizabeth has been recognized for her contributions to streamlining the healthcare system with a client and family-centred approach. Elizabeth has volunteered with the Special Olympics as a swimming coach and volunteer coordinator. She is active in her community’s parenting support group. Elizabeth was honoured to return to Okanagan College, now in an educator role. She walks alongside students as they start their healthcare careers. She has used her creativity and passion to co-develop Okanagan College’s Trauma Informed Practice micro-credential, as well as teach OC’s first cohort of supportive care assistants. Elizabeth goes beyond traditional teaching methods to instill compassion, empathy and kindness in each program she teaches. She hopes to inspire others the way that her mentors and educators have inspired her.


Emily McKay Owner, Most Wanted Luxury Resale OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing, 2017–2021

Emily is a proud Okanagan College Bachelor of Business Administration graduate and Kelowna-based business owner, educator, volunteer and sustainability advocate. Her greatest passion is climate justice in the clothing industry, which she dedicates herself to through the recirculation of clothing at her business, Most Wanted Luxury Resale; advocacy and leadership work with the non-profit organization, Remake; and education through her social enterprise, Rising Education. Earning multiple bursaries and scholarships, Emily was on the Dean’s List every semester for four years, eventually winning the marketing student award. She performs in Kelowna’s thriving dance community, leads the fostering of an Okanagan vintage resale community, writes a personal blog, and is an avid traveller.


Erum Ahmad Chartered Professional Accountant Articling Student, Kal Tire Head Office OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Accounting, 2018–2021

Following graduation, Erum worked at RBC for three years, building her finance foundation. After two co-op positions at BDO LLP, she worked as a financial controller for a private company. Erum is now a CPA articling with Kal Tire. Erum is the founder of ERUM jewelry, which is hosted online as well as in Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, CF Richmond Centre in Richmond, and various locations throughout the Okanagan. She was the 2023 treasurer for Bollywood Bang, a Vernon-based event in legacy of Dalvir Nahal, a councillor for the City of Vernon. In addition, she was a speaker at the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Vernon; the recipient of numerous scholarships and bursaries; two-time CFUW award winner. Erum has created the Erum Ahmad Financial Literacy Bursary for graduating students at Clarence Fulton Secondary School, her former high school.


Jeff Van Dyk CEO and Co-Founder, Gravitii Technologies Inc. OC Program of Study: Computer information Systems, 1996–1999

Jeff is an accomplished entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in software development in the healthcare and wellness industries. He is passionate about technology and the impact that innovative software can have on people. In 2004, he co-founded CoreHealth Technologies which was acquired in 2021. In 2022, he co-founded Gravitii Technologies which modernizes the process of accessing home care by leveraging technology to help deliver a more personalized, effective and timely experience. He loves giving back to his martial arts community by teaching and helping students grow into their best selves. He has served on the board of the United Way and is an active supporter of the Kelowna food bank.


Jim Armstrong Chef and Owner, Fresh Touch Chef Services; Instructor, Culinary Arts, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Culinary Arts (Red Seal), 1981–1982

Jim has spent the past 15 years teaching and helping up-and-coming chefs develop their techniques and prepare themselves for rewarding careers in the culinary arts field. His career experience includes 10 years as chef at the Harvest Golf Club, four years at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, three years at the Chateau Whistler and two years at the Black Forest restaurant. The founder of Smokin Flames spice rubs and Fresh Touch chef services, Jim enjoys preparing his students for the annual Skills Canada BC Competition, a multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in Canada.


Jim Hutchinson Site Superintendent, Argus Properties OC Program of Study: Carpenter Apprenticeship (Red Seal), 2001–2004

A 23-year employee of Argus Properties, Jim started in the grocery industry and then transferred into the construction trades to turn his passion for building into a career. Inspired by the challenge of the construction process, Jim is proud to be part of many beautiful construction projects and artwork installations over the years, including 1060 Manhattan, the Four Points by Sheraton Kelowna Airport, most of the YLW business park, and many other Okanagan “tilt-up” buildings. A long-time volunteer soccer coach, Jim participated in the Kelowna United Football Club trip to the IBERCUP international youth football tournament in Portugal.


Josh Worsfold Senior Manager, Grant Thornton LLP OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, Accounting, 2010–2014

As a senior manager, Josh has over nine years of experience serving clients in a wide variety of sectors, including technology, agriculture, real estate, logging, retail, construction and hospitality with a focus on owner managed and privately held business. Josh develops strong and long-lasting client relationships working as the quarterback for large family enterprises, as well as with internal specialty groups, to offer a full range of advisory services. Josh completed his Chartered Professional Accountant designation in 2016 and over the years has volunteered as a board member for Truth Matters and Hope for the Nations. This year he completed the EDGE leadership program and prior to that, in 2021, the AdvantEdge leadership program.

As a trusted senior broker, Justin’s dedication to financial education and empowerment has made a significant impact on the lives of middleincome families in the Okanagan. Helping his clients streamline financial obligations through debt consolidation, providing essential insurance coverage, and facilitating the growth of retirement savings, he helps alleviate burdens and creates a path to a more secure future. In addition to being nominated a Top Entrepreneur under 40, in 2021 Justin was voted the top financial advisor in Kelowna in the prestigious Best of Kelowna Awards. Justina LeeStolz Real Estate Agent and Advisor, Century 21 Assurance Realty Ltd. OC Program of Study: Arts, 2009–2011

A top real estate producer and community-focused business professional, Justina received a BDO Top 40 under 40 Award, was the National Effective Speaking Champion for JCI Canada and was nominated, through Kelowna Women in Business, for the Change Maker Award, celebrating the exceptional achievements of inspirational leaders. The creator of the Tour the Town program, promoting and supporting local businesses, Justina is passionate about cultivating rich, valuebased relationships with her clients, community and business partners. Justina volunteers as president of JCI Kelowna, the foremost global network for young leaders; chair of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce Ambassador committee, welcoming new businesses to the Chamber; and board chair for the Region 8 Backcountry Hunters and Anglers chapter, helping foster community and conservation. In addition to her Arts diploma from Okanagan College, Justina has a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of British Columbia Okanagan.


Kara Kazimer Program Administrator, Continuing Studies & Corporate Training, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Accounting, 1995–1997; Marketing, 1996–1997; Bachelor of Business Administration, 1997–1999

Kara earned her Bachelor of Business Administration with distinction in 1999. During her studies, she gained extensive practical experience through opportunities to work in conjunction with the local business community and all levels of government agencies and was awarded the Student Award of Excellence for her year-long baccalaureate project completed through her degree. In addition to her degree, she has also earned diplomas in marketing and accounting, as well as several certificates in market research, business development and quality management. Prior to her work at Okanagan College, Kara had the opportunity to work on a variety of community economic development projects locally as well as travel internationally to Russian Federation and Indonesia where she helped women and youth realize their entrepreneurial potential. She is president of the Okanagan College Alumni Association and, as a college program administrator, she plays a key role in program development and the delivery of contract opportunities throughout the Okanagan College region. The certified competitive youth bowling coach is currently working toward her Master of Business Administration and is a volunteer with the North Okanagan Youth Soccer Association and Community Futures North Okanagan Boards.


Kathryn Truant Certified Dental Assistant, Kelowna Oral & Facial Surgery; Instructor, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Certified Dental Assistant, 1983–1984

Following her graduation from Okanagan College’s Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) program in 1984, Kathryn began her career in general dentistry. In 2005, she entered the dental specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In 2018, she completed the Provincial Instructor Diploma program and began teaching future CDAs at Okanagan College. She has since obtained a Master of Education and, in addition to teaching clinical skills, Kathryn designs and teaches specialized advanced skills workshops for CDAs in partnership with the Thompson Okanagan Dental Society. Valuing engaging with the OC community, Kathryn offers sessions at OC Connections, an annual conference organized by employees for employees, and is a member of the OC Financial Awards Committee and Research Ethics Board.


Kayla Caruana Co-owner, Karen & Kayla – IG Private Wealth Management OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, 2014–2017

Specializing in the high net worth client experience, retirement income planning and estate planning, Kayla is the co-lead of an award-winning Private Wealth Management practice in Kelowna. Kayla started her career at IG Wealth Management as an assistant and transitioned to an advisor in 2016. In 2019, she obtained her Certified Financial Planner® professional (CFP) designation and was named the youngest CFP at the dealer (IG) across Canada. Shortly after this, she partnered with her mom, Karen Erickson, who has been in the industry 26 years and was a regional vice president at the time, and they moved to the Private Wealth Division of IG. She is currently working towards her Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation and has since been named Young Entrepreneur of the Year (2019), Philanthropist of the Year (2019), and Kelowna’s Top 40 Under 40 (2020). In 2022, Kayla and Karen won gold and silver in 2023 for Best Financial Advisory Team in Kelowna by community vote on KelownaNow. Kayla is a committed supporter of title protection in the financial industry and encourages ongoing professional development. She is a director on the local Advocis board and travels throughout Canada to promote title protection and raising the bar in her industry.


Ken Langedyk Professor, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Heavy Duty Mechanic, 1986–1987; Civil Engineering Technology, 1988–1990

Graduating for the first time from Okanagan College 35 years ago, Ken eventually went on to obtain a master’s degree in engineering and is now a professor in OC’s Department of Civil Engineering Technology. Throughout his career he has led multimillion dollar engineering projects and managed a variety of multi-disciplinary engineering teams. He was recently nominated as a Top 40 over 40 local influencer/businessperson in Kelowna and has received various awards and recognition for being on several local committees, including OC’s Sexual Violence Prevention Committee. For the past 10 years, he has been the project coordinator for the annual Kelowna Father Daughter Dance, which aims to provide a positive impact to the father-daughter bonding experience and to the local community. He also volunteers for the Okanagan Trail Riders Association and various mountain bike clubs.


Les Louis Artist, Painted Eagle Gallery & Studio OC Program of Study: Fine Arts, 1992–1995

Renowned Indigenous artist Les Louis graduated from Okanagan College in 1995 with a Fine Arts diploma and later enrolled in the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The multitalented local draws inspiration from his traditional Okanagan Nation Territory in all its natural beauty to create his timeless pieces that showcase his Indigenous voice. A member of the Lower Similkameen Band of the Okanagan Nation, he created the story poles that stand in the na’ k’wulam n garden at the Kelowna campus and is well known for traditional drum and drumstick artistry. He has also explored drawing, pen and ink, ceramic sculptures, photography, jewelry making and acrylic painting with surreal native wildlife and environment images.


Lisa Janzen Vineyard Manager, SpearHead Winery OC Program of Study: Viticulture, 2012–2013

Focused on producing high quality grapes through sustainable farming practices, Lisa began her career with SpearHead Winery 10 years ago as a practicum student. Since then, she has worked her way to vineyard manager where, through her contributions, SpearHead Winery was recognized as Best Performing Small Winery of the Year in 2022 by the National Wine Awards of Canada. Working in a male-dominated field, Lisa works hard to ensure others feel welcome breaking into the industry. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs and hospitality managers and, in addition to managing the vineyard, is active in SpearHead’s wine club and special events. She loves windsurfing, camping, snowshoeing, canning, cooking and fabric arts.


Malcolm (Mal) Griffin Former Vice President (Retired), Interior Health Authority OC Program of Study: General Studies, 1986–1988

Prior to his retirement in 2023, Mal was the vice president of Digital Health at the Interior Health Authority. There he was responsible for digital health strategic investments, operations and risk management; clinical and business analytics; information management services; information technology services; health technology services; and health-authority-wide implementation of advanced clinical information technology solutions. Previously, he was Interior Health’s vice president of Human Resources. Mal has 33 years of health-care experience, holds an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Fredericton, a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University and a General Studies diploma from Okanagan College. In 2009, Mal was named one of Computer World’s Premier 100 IT Leaders.


Meng Jin Market Development Manager, Mission Hill Family Estate Winery OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, 2009–2014

A fluent multilingual presenter and communicator, Meng is the market development manager at award-winning Mission Hill Family Estate Winery. A passionate business leader who brings an abundance of enthusiasm and energy to her work, Meng focuses on using innovative strategies to grow strong business relationships and increase revenue for one of Canada’s leading wineries. She has also created a whole new aspect of the business by developing the Asian targeted market. Meng is a volunteer with OCCA Communities Association which promotes mutual understanding, respect, acceptance and harmony among diverse communities in the Okanagan and encourages and facilitates the full participation of immigrants from different origins in the social, cultural and economic life of Canada.


Morgen Wowchuk Owner and Executive Chef, Marno’s Woodfire Pizza OC Program of Study: Culinary Arts (Red Seal), 2013–2014/2019; Associate of Arts, 2017–2019

Morgan started her career at Okanagan College in the dual credit program in Culinary Arts. From there she began Marno’s Woodfire Pizza, which grew from a food truck to a restaurant at Blind Tiger Vineyards. In the off season, she began taking classes at Okanagan College where she realized she enjoyed the academic side of learning. She completed her Associate of Arts degree with a major in English and then transferred to the University of Victoria to complete her Bachelor of Arts. She is now completing her Bachelor of Education at the University of British Columbia Okanagan with the hopes of becoming a middle or high school teacher. As a lifelong learner, Morgen chose the teaching profession so that she can inspire future generations to love learning as much as she does, while learning along with them.


Nick Pelletier Owner, Rock The Boat Rentals OC Program of Study: Business Marketing, 2016–2019

Nick is a Canadian ultra-endurance athlete and adventurer. He uses his drive for endurance sport, aligned with his passion for helping people, to tackle massive undertakings with the goal of showing the public what the human body and mind are capable of, while at the same time, supporting a social cause that will have a tangible effect on the local community. Nick’s career has taken him on many adventures including: cycling across continents, swimming for days straight, running 100+ miles at a time, jumping out of planes around the world, fighting fires with Canadian fire departments, and inspiring today’s youth through keynote speaking. All of Nick’s endeavors are tied to a social cause, positively impacting and changing the communities he visits forever.


Rebecca Mattera Therapist Assistant, Stride Mobile Physiotherapy OC Program of Study: Therapist Assistant, 2017–2018

Becky was born in Kelowna and grew up in Oyama and Costa Rica. While in Costa Rica, she learned how to scuba dive, managed multinational accounts for customer service call centres, and became fluent in Spanish. In 2013, Becky and her family moved back to Kelowna. With a passion for healthcare and helping people to achieve their goals, Becky enrolled in Okanagan College’s Therapist Assistant diploma program. Always someone people can turn to, she is consistently recognized for supporting her friends, family and teammates. She loves to problem solve, learn and work with people.


Rhea Dupuis Director, Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Education Assistant, 1995–1996

Following her time in Arts and the Education Assistant program at Okanagan College, Rhea’s journey has since taken her through Selkirk College and University of Victoria, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in child and youth care, and a master’s degree in Indigenous communities counselling psychology. Through her professional career, Rhea has worked in both provincial and federal organizations, including working for her home community, the Penticton Indian Band, in the education department. In 2022, Rhea—whose traditional Sylix name is x̌wnámx̌wn m, which means Hummingbird—returned to OC an employee where she is now the director of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.


Richard McAdam Fund Development Coordinator, YMCA of Southern Interior BC OC Program of Study: Political Science, 1999–2003

After completing his undergraduate studies in political science in 2003, Richard moved to Halifax in 2005 to pursue his Master of Arts in the same discipline. His thesis was turned into a book, American Leadership and the Future of the Bush Doctrine. Following a few more years in Halifax, he and his wife, Tasha, moved back to Kelowna where Richard remains deeply engaged in politics, including currently serving as the board chair for the Liberal Party Electoral District Association in Kelowna. He spent 10 years with the Okanagan College Foundation, helping donors support student awards, bursaries and scholarships. In July 2023, he began a new role with the YMCA of Southern Interior BC, promoting his passion and advocacy in the belief that “fitness is for everybody.” In addition to his political engagement, Richard has also been a volunteer with the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation’s annual Gorges-Comeau Homebase Slo-Pitch tournament, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.


Rick Fischer Owner and Holistic Health Consultant/ Practitioner/Instructor, Integrative Health Coaching OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, 1996–1999

Since 2013, Rick has been bringing mineral-based health education to the world. His passionate early work in copper toxicity research, stemming from a personal tragedy, has since increased global awareness and serves as a primary educational resource today for thousands of patients, practitioners and health writers. Rick is also founder and instructor of the groundbreaking Mineral Mastery nutrition training program, which has helped support the training received today by countless wellness and nutrition professionals. In addition to working in clinical practice helping clients, Rick is frequently hired as a personal mentor to various health practitioners, including a large number of functional diagnostic nutritionists, functional medicine doctors, osteopaths and health coaches. Rick’s work serves as a bridge between nutrition and both physical and mental health, and paves the way for a healthier world for future generations.


Rob Phare Sales Manager (retired) OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Arts 1968–1969, 1972–1973

With over 22 years of experience in the Canadian information technology sector, Rob took on increasingly challenging sales and management positions while at ComputerLand, AST Research and Cisco Systems. Rob’s achievements and awards include helping grow Cisco’s regional business over 200 percent in two years, driving revenue in excess of $50 million annually, and receiving the 2000 Top Sales North America International Award. Retired at the age of 52, Rob has undertaken community service work including directorships with the Museum & Archives of Vernon, City of Vernon Board of Variance, Vernon Land Advisory Committee, North Okanagan Hospice Society and Okanagan College Foundation.


Shannon Peltier Youth Worker, Osoyoos Indian Band OC Program of Study: Culinary Arts (Red Seal), 2004–2007; Culinary Management, 2004–2006; Indigenous Community Support Worker, 2019

With Cree and Metis (from Fort McMurray First Nation), and French and British ancestry, Shannon grew up in Anishinaabe territory and currently lives in Syilx territory. A Red Seal-certified cook, she previously owned and operated a sourdough bakery before switching careers to work as an Indigenous education advocate. After four years at Southern Okanagan Secondary School, she became a youth worker for the Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB). With a burning passion for Indigenous food sovereignty, Shannon is currently enrolled in a Master of Indigenous Education. She is also studying book one of the Paul Creek curriculum for the Nsyilxcen language and has been doing so for four years along with co-teaching the book during the past two summers for OIB youth. Her hope is to utilize her master’s degree to help create a reconnection with traditional foods so that, once again, they become a staple in every Indigenous family’s household. Shannon does the work that she does because of her Nohkoms’ (Grandmothers’) teaching that if you live on someone else’s territory, it is your responsibility to learn about their language and culture as a sign of respect and to let their ancestors and the land know what your intentions are so you can walk forward in a positive way.


Dr. Sharon McKenna Nursing Professor (retired), Murray State University OC Program of Study: Nursing, 1976–1978

Sharon was in the first cohort of diploma nursing students at Okanagan College in 1976. She went on to the University of Victoria to successfully complete her Bachelor of Science in nursing. Before continuing studies in gerontology at the University and Institute of Cincinnati and becoming a nursing professor at Murray State University, she worked at Kelowna General Hospital as a registered nurse and at Cottonwoods as head nurse. On return to the Okanagan in 2004, she became a member of the Leon Street no-barriers drop-in centre, providing food, social assistance and support for the homeless elderly. She was one of three finalists shortlisted for the Peabody Award and remains a passionate supporter of nursing education through her philanthropic support for students in Okanagan College’s practical nursing program.


Sheri Hamilton Vice President, People & Culture, SASCU OC Program of Study: General Arts, 1985–1986

Sheri is a seasoned human resources professional with over 20 years of generalist experience in progressively more senior leadership roles in the credit union industry. She is passionate about creating a positive employee experience, supported by solid practices, processes and structures that align with strategy. She is a graduate of Royal Roads University (Master of Business Administration), holds her Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation, and was awarded the 2019 Award of Excellence – HR Professional of the Year by CPHR British Columbia and Yukon. Sheri is currently the vice president of People & Culture at SASCU. She is past chair of the Okanagan College Regional Advisory Committee, in her second term as a director for the Shuswap Region Okanagan College Foundation, and current chair of the Finance Committee.


Simon Dufresne Chef de Partie, 50th Parallel Estate Winery/ Block One Restaurant OC Program of Study: Culinary Arts, 2018–2019

A talented culinary professional working at the prestigious 50th Parallel Estate Winery and Block One Restaurant, Simon brings an innovative approach and dedication to excellence by skillfully incorporating local and international flavours. Born with a passion for cooking, Simon embarked on a remarkable culinary journey that started at Okanagan College and since then he has been honing his skills by competing in multiple cooking competitions across Canada. A former member of Junior Culinary Team Canada, he won the 2023 B.C. Young Chef’s championship and national Young Chefs Challenge. He is a Vernon Lions Club member and former director; Vernon Leos Club charter president; and BC Winter Games 2023 food venue chair.


Sophie Wilson Indigenous Careers Coordinator, Okanagan College; Executive Assistant, Outma Sqilx’w Cultural School OC Program of Study: Business Administration, 2019–2021

Sophie graduated from Okanagan College’s Business Administration program in 2021 with a specialty in management. From the Syilx Okanagan Nation, she is Okanagan College’s Indigenous careers coordinator and the executive assistant at Outma Sqilx’w Cultural School. She strives to stand up for her community by following the steps of her ancestors, claiming her college education while reclaiming thousands of years of knowledge of the Syilx People to return to her cultural identity as a Syilx woman. Promoting connection to the Okanagan culture and helping create a successful space for strong role models, Sophie aims to provide a path for a bright future for all, including the many generations to follow.


Stephanie Allen Vice President Strategic Business Operations & Performance, BC Housing OC Program of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration, 1998-2002

Stephanie Allen is a nationally recognized affordable housing expert. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in urban studies. Stephanie’s master’s research focused on the settlement and displacement of Black neighborhoods in Canada with a focus on Vancouver. She was awarded the 2020–2021 Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) and ProQuest Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award in humanities, social sciences, education and business disciplines for her research. In her career, Stephanie is focused on evolving the housing system and repairing communities, with the goal that everyone can have a home they love. Stephanie has worked in the private, non-profit and public sectors of real estate development for the past 21 years and is a co-founder of Hogan’s Alley Society. She has been recognized with a BC Multiculturalism & Anti-racism Award, named one of the 50 Most Powerful People by Vancouver Magazine for four consecutive years, and nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction Award.


Tammie Barry Instructor, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Certified Dental Assistant, 1999–2000

A former student turned teacher, Tammie worked as a certified dental assistant in general practice for 14 years before pursuing a teaching career at Okanagan College. Obtaining her Provincial Instructor Diploma in 2017, the Distinguished Service Award winner has been teaching dental assisting at the college for the past nine years and, in 2021, became chair of its Certified Dental Assistant program. Tammie enjoys sharing her passion for dentistry with her students and takes pride in watching them grow from the start of classes to the last day of their patient care clinic. She has also contributed to her community through volunteer work including as a board director for the Certified Dental Assistants of British Columbia and dental assistant at the Kelowna Gospel Mission dental clinic.


Tia-Maria Soroskie Program Administrator, Arts and Foundational Programs, Okanagan College OC Program of Study: Fine Arts, 1999–2003

Tia-Maria Soroskie is a multidisciplinary artist with a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Installation from Washington State University. Her work has been exhibited nationwide and in juried shows internationally. It has also been included in the permanent collection of the University of British Columbia Okanagan (President’s Purchase Award), as well as a number of private collections. In October 2014, Tia-Maria was awarded a research-based residency abroad to be an artist in residence at DRAWinternational in Caylus, France. In November 2014, one of her graphite figure studies on tea-stained rag paper featured at the juried Figureworks 2014 show in Ottawa, Ontario and was awarded a prize for “Best Use of Pigment” by Kama Pigments Matériel d’artistes.


Wanda Lock Artist and Curator, Lake Country Art Gallery OC Program of Study: Fine Arts, 1987–1989

An artist and curator, Wanda has contributed to the art world through her artworks and dedication to promoting art in her community. Her artistic journey began to take shape in her early years. In 1987, she enrolled in the Fine Arts diploma program at Okanagan College, where she honed her technical skills and laid the foundation for her artistic pursuits. Following the two-year program, she transferred to Emily Carr College of Art & Design where she graduated with a studio major in painting and a solid artistic foundation. In addition to her artistic endeavours, Wanda is the curator at the Lake Country Art Gallery, where she has curated exhibitions that showcase the works of emerging and established artists. Her curatorial practice allows her to engage with diverse artistic expressions and create meaningful connections between artists, artworks and viewers.
