Instructor – Leadership Essentials Series When asked to describe her work, Carolyn Gibson often tells people that her job is teaching people how to play nice in the sand box. As she tells her students, while we need to take responsibility for our own actions, it’s also our responsibility to help others along the way. As an instructor of the Leadership Essentials Series at Okanagan College, Carolyn does just that: she passes on pillars of leadership that can benefit any organization or individual. “Often times, people feel stuck in how things are going with the people at work, or they feel stuck in how they see their jobs. I love when I can open the door to other ways of looking at things; to show that there’s other possibilities if they changed their actions, or behaviours, or perspectives,” states Gibson. The Leadership Essentials Series, is a five-part series consisting of one-day seminars focused on specific leadership skills required in today’s workplace. “The course is delivered in such a way that students aren’t feeling bad about not doing things ‘right,’ but rather are seeing the potential for their organization if they changed their behavior even slightly. In all my roles, the biggest thing I do is listen to people – which is such an important part of my role as a teacher at OC.”

**WHMIS LEGISLATION CHANGES** The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) has aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). GHS is a worldwide system. The WHMIS 2015 legislation is currently in force. “In force means that suppliers may begin to use and follow the new requirements for labels and safety data sheets (SDSs) for hazardous products sold, distributed, or imported into Canada. However, there is a transition period with various stages. At the outset of the transition period, the supplier must fully comply with either the repealed Controlled Products Regulations (WHMIS 1988) or the HPR (WHMIS 2015) for a specific controlled or hazardous product. The classification, label and (material) SDS must comply fully with the specific regulation chosen by the supplier, and not be a combination of the two. By Dec. 2018, all businesses in Canada (manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and employers) must comply with all of the changes from WHMIS 1988 to WHMIS 2015 (GHS).
