Jack took his Level C training years ago as a teen, and has seen value in updating his certification throughout his career.

“Having first aid is one of the most invaluable tickets you can have on the job, because you never know what is going to happen,” he says.

“I just love being there for people and helping them as much as I can.”

First aid training has evolved over the years, and updating certification has helped Jack stay current with life-saving advancements like automatic electronic defibrillators, anaphylaxis response and naloxone kits, which he has used multiple times.

Two years ago, while he and his family were getting ready at home one morning, Jack found his spouse face-down on the bathroom floor.

“I didn’t want to move her because I thought she might have slipped and caused a head or neck injury. As I looked closer, I noticed her mouth was drooping on her one side,” he recalls. “I could see her eyes moving, she was trying to hear me, but her speech was slurred.

That’s when I remembered FAST – face, arms, speech and time.”

He called 911 and she was sent to the hospital for surgery. “She pulled through. She has returned to work and although she still struggles with memory and other challenges, she is improving every day,” he says.

Pest Management for Cannabis Production This workshop is for persons growing cannabis plants indoors or outdoors and is designed for commercial growers of medicinal cannabis, persons growing cannabis for personal use or persons interested in working in this industry. The content will also be of interest to persons working in greenhouse production of flowers and vegetables.

The workshop will guide students through a review of the main pest problems of this cannabis production and discuss management tools that are effective and meet the requirements of Health Canada. The morning will be a detailed focus on powdery mildew and spider mites, the two key pest problems of cannabis. We will examine all options for management, either for organic production or with conventional pesticides that are registered for this crop.

Wild Mushroom Identification Level II This one day workshop will give participants the opportunity to hone their wild mushroom identification skills using both pictorial and dichotomous keys. In the morning we will cover the use of the various keys and go on a short foray in a local woodlot to collect specimens. Learn the Art of Acrylic Painting In this six-week course Lisa will share her joy of painting with Acrylic Paints. Acrylic paints were developed in the 1950’s to have the qualities of both oil and watercolour paints, if this intrigues you; having the ability to use one medium in many styles in one painting please come and learn the techniques and skills to make this happen. The first part of the course will be spent learning how to make marks with acrylic paints from watercolour techniques (washes, glazes, and more) to oil techniques (impasto, sgraffitto and more) along with this we will learn to mix colours and colour theory and applying this knowledge to our artwork to enhance a more dynamic approach to storytelling. Practical Gardener This course provides a basic understanding of cultural techniques that will enhance plant establishment, survival and health.
