Business LEAN SIX SIGMA SERIES BRITISH COLUMBIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
This series of nine workshops is being offered in partnership with BCIT. Lean Six Sigma is a managerial concept combining the problem-solving techniques of Lean and Six Sigma. Both Lean and Six Sigma focus on reducing unproductive processes in organizations with the goal to improve operational effectiveness. Six Sigma strives to improve both quality of service and process outputs by identifying and eliminating the causes of defects and minimizing variability. Lean, also known as Lean Manufacturing, is a process-improvement methodology that identifies and eliminates non-value-adding activities in business processes.

How you empower your employees and teams is critical to company survival in the new and competitive Lean world. Course code: MGR 335 KEL: Dec. 2, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 70632 $299 (+ GST)

Theory of Constraints
The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management paradigm that views any manageable system as being limited in achieving more of its goals by a very small number of constraints. There is always at least one constraint, and TOC uses a focusing process to identify the constraint and restructure the rest of the organization around it. The underlying premise of theory of constraints is that organizations can be measured and controlled by variations on three measures: throughput, operational expense, and inventory. Throughput is the rate at which the system generates money through sales. Inventory is all the money that the system has invested in purchasing things which it intends to sell. Operational expense is all the money the system spends in order to turn inventory into throughput. Course code: MGR 339 KEL: Apr. 28, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 90057 $299 (+ GST)
Six Sigma
Does your organization spend time, energy and money resolving problems that seem to keep repeating themselves? Have you reached a plateau with initiatives such as Lean Manufacturing and want to drive your improvements to the next level? Six Sigma is the approach you can use to address these issues and move towards increased bottom-line performance. Six Sigma is a structured, disciplined problem-solving approach that allows companies to design and monitor everyday business activities in ways that minimize waste and resources while increasing customer satisfaction. It is a system that guides companies into making fewer mistakes in everything they do. Whether your business environment is in the industrial manufacturing sector or in the commercial service sector, Six Sigma will allow you to discover and address the underlying cause of process problems to ensure that those same problems do not recur. This workshop will provide an overview of the Six Sigma methodology, how you can apply Six Sigma techniques to solve on-going problems, how Six Sigma enhances on-going improvement initiatives, and will enable you to embark on the Six Sigma pathway. Business Project Procurement
This one-day workshop will provide project managers with the ability to manage the procurement process by planning, conducting, monitoring and making adjustments to plans as required. Complex projects, especially those requiring specialized skills or goods, often require the project manager to acquire these resources from outside the organization. The acquisition of these resources is called procurement. It is the project manager’s responsibility to ensure all goods and services required for successful completion of a project are acquired, even if the organization has a procurement or purchasing department. Historically, procurements were simple, consisting of a purchase order with quantity and price giving us a total cost. Today, as a result of globalization, we can procure labour, specialized subject knowledge, equipment and almost any part of the project scope that we do not wish to “make.” Procurement is becoming increasingly complex, yet is essential for the success of many projects and as a project manager it should be part of your tool kit.
