Basic Estate Planning

Learn about the documents needed for a basic estate plan. Estate planning topics will include the purpose of a will, alternatives to a will, the tax consequences of dying, some of the important provisions that should be in your will, and some general information about avoiding disputes after your death. Incapacity planning topics will include the nature and purpose of a Power of Attorney vs. a Personal Representation Agreement, the main uses (and abuses) of these documents, and some tips on drafting. Finally, you will find out how these documents, in combination, can create some unexpected consequences and how to avoid these. Advanced Estate Planning

Explore some of the more complex planning options available to you. The course will illustrate, through the use of examples, what problems can arise when estates are badly planned, including a failure to properly establish mental capacity and the new onus of proof with regard to undue influence. We will look at tax avoidance (planning your affairs to minimize the taxes payable by your estate), leaving money to an adult child who has a disability without creating a situation where they lose their benefits, and suggestions for how to deal with an adult child with an addiction or spendthrift problems. Finally, the course will cover the problems (and solutions) that face couples who are in a second marriage. Course code: PIR 543 KEL: Apr. 28, Tue, 10 AM - 12 PM CRN: 90180 $45 (+ GST)
