Advanced GIS

Learn the essentials of using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create maps, and edit and manage GIS data and projects. More advanced topics include raster analysis, working with 3D data, and network datasets. Students will learn how to use GPS technologies to gather data and perform GIS analysis. In addition to an in-depth study of relational databases and how these databases are used within GIS, students will complete two major projects of their own design and a directed project of the type they would encounter in an employment situation. A blend of theory and practical application ensures graduates are prepared to work in various employment opportunities in private industry, consulting, and the government, First Nations and mining sectors. Audio Engineering & Music Production

Autism Spectrum

This 81-hour program is for persons who work, interact and/or live with persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Courses provide a thorough overview of ASD focusing on both theory and practical skills that can be used to greatly enhance the quality of interactions with persons with autism in home, educational, daycare, social work or caregiver settings. AutoCAD Skills

If you want to work in today’s drafting and design industry, you must be able to use industry-standard AutoCAD software. In this program, you will be trained to prepare technical drawings for a variety of manufacturers, including those in the machining, electronics and woodworking fields. You will also learn the basic CAD skills required to prepare working drawings for architecture, surveying, mapping and graphic arts. Basic Accounting

Gain expertise in basic business accounting in this 66-hour hands-on program. Learn accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles, and the rules of debit and credit. Understand the accounting cycle for a service business and how to manage a general ledger, prepare financial statements, periodic adjustments and year-end books. Learn customer and vendor-tracking for a merchandising business, as well as inventory concepts, sales taxes, internal cash controls, and payroll preparation. Certificate Programs Dental Office Administrative Assistant

Bookkeeping (Pending Okanagan College Board Approval) The 123-hour Bookkeeping Certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage the complete bookkeeping cycle, from how to set up a company through the full year’s business cycle for computerized accounting systems. Students will learn a computerized accounting program, apply their knowledge to spreadsheets, plus gain an in-depth understanding of payroll administration. Computer Basics for Business

This program introduces participants to the common application programs essential in today’s workforce. Emphasis is on learning the concepts and practical uses of the various programs as well as developing acceptable computer-related practices required in the business environment. This program is suitable for anyone wishing to develop entry-level skills and the foundation needed to advance to other programs such as the Computer Proficiency for Business Certificate. Custodial Worker

This program prepares students for entry into the building service industry in custodial work, and provides upgrading for those currently employed in the industry. Divided into four courses (94 hours of instruction), this program is carried out in the classroom and in appropriate work areas. Optional on-the-job work experience of up to two weeks may be arranged at some centres. Although completion of the work experience component is not required for the certificate, it is a useful part of training for people seeking employment in the building service industry. Emphasis is on effective oral and written communication, and professionalism in the dental office. Education Assistant

This program prepares students to work as Education Assistants in a school setting with an emphasis on working as part of a team under the instructional supervision of classroom teachers and employment supervision of other School and District level staff. Duties include helping to implement Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for children with exceptionalities in the areas of cognitive abilities, physical challenges, severe health issues, behavioral challenges, autism and related disorders. Graduates are well prepared to facilitate and support the learning and independence of children who require extra assistance in meeting their educational goals, and will gain hands-on experience through a 120-hour practicum in the classroom. Do you have an eye for design? Learn the basics of interior decorating, drawing floor plans and sketching furniture, as well as advanced skills, including how to mix fabrics, work with colour, employ light and choose accessories. Learner-Centred Instructor

A 60-hour program designed for instructors who are currently working in an educational institution or individuals with an educational focus who have access to a teaching/ training position. Using an integrated approach, this program merges practical training with theoretical learning to assist students in developing practical classroom instructional skills. On completion, participants can create an engaging learnercentred environment, and develop and deliver effective instructional strategies. Medical Device Reprocessing Technician

With a focus on disease prevention, this 814hour program prepares students for a career combating micro-organisms and creating safe and hygienic environments for patients. Gain a comprehensive knowledge of aseptic techniques, infection control, cleaning, sterilization, the handling and storage of sterile supplies and decontamination procedures. Apply learning in a 400-hour practicum in a hospital setting while gaining valuable work experience. Graduates are eligible to write the exams for the Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (CMDRT) Personnel Certification through the Canadian Standards Association, as well as the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), an international certifying agency. Certificate Programs Medical Office Assistant

This 254-hour program prepares students for employment in reception, clerical, or assisting positions in medical facilities, including hospitals and doctors’ offices. Students will acquire skills to use effective oral and written communication techniques, demonstrate knowledge of office procedures and time management, apply medical terminology in all courses, obtain a good understanding of computers in the business environment, perform computer medical billing, and apply medical office guidelines and medical and legal ethics standards. Nursing Unit Assistant

A nursing unit assistant is a key member of a hospital health care team who assembles and maintains patient charts, handles the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, processes physicians' orders relating to medications, laboratory and diagnostic tests, and surgical or treatment plans, and performs standard receptionist duties. Project Management

This intermediate-level 138-hour Certificate provides students with project management knowledge, strategies and tools that can be applied in the workplace. Delivered in a blended learning format that offers a flexible and interactive learning environment, the certificate is designed for project managers at all levels. Project management skills are required in most work environments and project managers can be found in a variety of fields, including government, construction, health, education, information technology, oil and gas, the non-profit sector and business. Program students will learn and demonstrate effective techniques to immediately improve project performance.

Service and Support in a Learner-Centred Organization

Designed for employees in educational support and service roles, this program focuses on enhancing work place skills by developing a people-centred philosophy of service. Using an integrated approach that merges hands-on training with theoretical learning, participants develop practical service skills such as engaging in peoplecentred communication, becoming adept at responding to people's needs, and gaining experience in using plain language to explain complex rules. Participants will expand their skills and develop effective strategies for recognizing and resolving conflict as well as overcoming barriers associated with opposing demands. Distance Tuition: $914

Simply Accounting (using SAGE 50) Balancing the books is essential for the success of any business. Become an integral part of that success by learning the most popular accounting software used by smalland medium-sized businesses. This 66-hour program provides the skills to maintain computerized general ledgers, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll records. Gain fundamental spreadsheet skills to create budgets, projections, financial statements, and client databases. Students should have some previous experience or education in manual bookkeeping systems, and basic computer and keyboarding skills. Teaching English as a Second Language

This 140-hour program prepares students to work as ESL teachers of adult learners. Graduates can work both in Canada and overseas. Certificate is comprised of six core courses and the choice of either a supervised practicum or a project. Program is comprehensive in education theory and methodology and provides a hands-on approach to learning various secondlanguage teaching strategies. Also offers students training in language principles and patterns, and addresses the application of this knowledge to the teaching of language skills, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Gain the skills and knowledge essential to farm a vineyard or seek employment in viticulture. Through this program you’ll learn the scientific principles underlying grape growing for the purpose of wine production, the various influences on grape quality, and industry terminology. Early application for all programs is strongly advised. Notice of program closures will be posted on the Okanagan College website. Okanagan College may cease to accept applications for a given intake or program if the number of applications submitted greatly exceeds enrolment capacity. Okanagan College is a multi-campus institution, and many programs are offered at more than one campus. However, not all programs are offered at all campuses.

While online submission of your application greatly speeds the processing of the application, how you submit your application is not a factor in determining your admissibility.

Wine Sales

Gain the knowledge and skills to work in the exciting sales side of the wine industry. Begin with the basics of grape growing and winemaking before moving onto legal regulations, industry standards, marketing and sales strategies, and knowledge of wine shop management and winery promotions. Online learning is complemented by two in-class weekends.

Winery Assistant

Gain the knowledge and skills needed to work alongside the many master winemakers in our region. Learn the scientific principles underlying grape and wine production, influences on wine quality, industry terminology, winery equipment operation and maintenance, harvest and crush, sanitation and safety, wine sensory evaluation, and marketing and sales practices.

The Rock and Mineral Identification portion will provide practical information to identify the most common rocks and minerals found in the field. HEALTH Health Care Advanced Foot Care

This 30-hour course is designed for RNs and LPNs who wish to further their foot care skills for use in clinical and community settings. Since confidence and competency come with practice, this course is designed to enhance the development of a knowledge base to bring greater understanding to the practice setting. RV Owner’s Lifestyle

For new, seasoned or wannabe RV owners to gain valuable knowledge of recreation vehicle operation, maintenance, and safety. Reverse and prevent the signs of aging with procedures and techniques used by the professionals. REFUND POLICY Non-Certificate Course Withdrawal Refund requests must be made at least two business days (48 hours) prior to the course start date. No refunds are issued for requests received with less than two business days’ notice. Students may withdraw by phone, fax, email, mail or in person. Non-Certificate courses with tuition fees of $500 or more will have a five business day refund policy unless an exception is made by the Director.
