changing tomorrow today
Grand opening of the Kelowna Trades Complex, September 2016.
From yesterday to today to tomorrow, the Foundation and its donors are creating opportunities and changing lives. We see it happening for the students we help and the facilities we help build. It is exciting and gratifying to know that education is truly transformative. The stories of tomorrow are written by our donors and students of today. Amanda Wright is just one example of an alumna who is now giving back to another worthy student – Julie Dorsey. Rahaf Albitar and Mustafa Zakreet, both Syrian refugees, inspire us with their stories of finding hope as students in their new home, Canada. Dorothea Hench and Walter Rupp share their vision for future generations through their legacy gift. Kelowna company priMe haBitat seeks to build a brighter future for the community by supporting students in the innovative Sustainable Construction Management Technology program. Read on to explore each of their stories, framed through their vision for the future and how they are shaping it through their actions today. These are just a few of the hundreds of stories of our students and their paths to become tomorrow’s business leaders, medical professionals, engineers and other careers that build prosperity in communities. You have helped them with their tuition, books and rent, helped put gas into their cars and food on the table for their families. In total this year, 546 individuals received 734 awards valued at a total of $803,229 – an average of $1,133. Your support has also helped build college facilities that foster teaching and learning. Your generosity is in every corner of the new Kelowna Trades Complex. We are thrilled to be embarking on new capital projects in Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon that will create new opportunities for tomorrow’s students. It is a privilege to witness the impact of such generous community support. What we do today really can change tomorrow. Thank you for your continued support.

inspiring generosity College alumna continues the cycle of giving The power of paying it forward came full circle when an Okanagan College alumna and former award recipient continued the cycle of goodwill by setting up an award shortly after her graduation. Amanda Wright, a 2015 graduate of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Honours program in Accounting, understands the direct impact of donor support on student success – she received 17 awards during her time at the College. “The generosity of donors allowed me to focus on my courses,” says Wright. “I wanted to provide that same opportunity to future students.” She set up the Honours Prize for Progressing NonProfit Excellence in fall 2016, an award given to a BBA Honours student working to conducting research for a non-profit or social enterprise. Wright was inspired by her experience working as a research assistant for the Scotiabank Centre for Non-Profit Excellence, a project that enables Okanagan College students to research and identify strategies to ensure sustainability within all realms of non-profit organizations. In that time, Wright identified the challenges faced by non-profits in achieving organizational sustainability. “I saw a gap in the sector where students could provide value by applying business skills from the classroom, and I wanted to find a way to support it,” she says. “It’s beneficial on many levels – it helps non-profits build capacity, which benefits the greater community and provides hands-on experience for students.” By supporting students in the program, Wright hopes to continue the cycle and bridge the gap. Her contribution was doubled when KPMG, the accounting and business consulting firm she currently works for, matched her donation.
For Julie Dorsey, the first recipient of the award, that generosity helped equip her to start a new career. Dorsey returned to the classroom to complete the BBA Honours program after raising three children and running a successful farming business for 30 years. Dorsey was selected for the prize out of several students who presented in March 2017 for her research for the Society of Hope in Kelowna. She didn’t need to wait to put her business skills to use, she was offered a job at the Society prior to graduation. “It was such a blessing to receive the prize,” says Dorsey. “I felt a lot of pride as an individual and it both honoured the Society of Hope and celebrated the collaboration between the College and community.”
I saw a gap in the sector where students could provide value by applying business skills from the classroom, and I wanted to find a way to support it. ~ Amanda Wright Dorsey has already carried forward the generosity by making a donation to the Okanagan College Foundation shortly after her graduation in spring 2017. “I felt very fortunate with the support I received from my family and the College throughout my program and wanted to pay that forward.”

transforming lives with a legacy Giving the gift of education A Salmon Arm couple with a strong connection to Okanagan College is passing on their passion for education through a planned gift to help future generations of students. Dorothea Hench and Walter Rupp want to leave a legacy that will last beyond their lifetime and benefit individuals in the community they love so dearly. Through a planned bequest to the Okanagan College Foundation, the couple has established an endowment fund that will provide annual student awards and program support to the Salmon Arm campus. The decision was easy for the couple, who both attended the College for courses. Hench emigrated from Switzerland in 2009 and quickly enrolled in an English as a Second Language (ESL) course at the Salmon Arm campus to improve her language skills. The experience ultimately inspired her in ways she couldn’t have imagined when she first stepped on campus. “It wasn’t just knowledge I learned at the College,” she says. “It truly showed me the challenges facing students today, and reignited my passion for lifelong learning.”
Also from Switzerland, Rupp settled in the North Okanagan twenty years ago where he took his first lesson in English at the College. Rupp, now retired from a owning a seeing eye dog training business, appreciates both the value of training and importance of fundraising, two aspects that were integral to the success of his company. It gives him satisfaction to know that future generations will benefit from the investment they are making to the Foundation. “I couldn’t have made a good life without good training,” he says. “Everyone has a skill they should be able to learn and develop, and we would like to help give them that opportunity.” For both Hench and Rupp, it was important their contributions will go to support both the students directly through the awards and the programs that are teaching them the skills for the workforce. “We want the College to grow, for Salmon Arm to have more students,” adds Hench. “The educational training here will positively impact the local economy. We want our gift to help people thrive.”
As witness to Hench’s experience in the classroom, Rupp cultivated a deep respect for the impact the College has on individuals in their community.
The tax advantage of gifting What are the advantages of giving a gift of securities?
Giving securities is easy – and tax effective
A gift of securities is one of the most cost-effective ways to support Okanagan College Foundation, immediately or through a gift in your will. When publicly listed securities are donated, the tax on the capital gains is eliminated. Any publicly listed securities, including shares, bonds, stocks and mutual funds qualify.
• You receive a tax receipt equal to the trading value on the date the securities are received at Okanagan College Foundation • The Foundation will sell the securities and direct the proceeds to the area you have specified • You can deduct the entire gift in the current year or carry tax credits forward for up to five years
We encourage you to seek professional legal, estate planning and/or financial advice before deciding upon your course of action. 8

a new hope Syrian students reconnect with their dreams Rahaf Albitar and Mustafa Zakreet had never stepped on an airplane before boarding the flights that took them away from family, friends and memories in Syria for a chance at a new life in Canada. Albitar grew up in Damascus and had a successful career as a laboratory technician when her neighbourhood turned into a war zone in 2011 and everything changed. “The war stopped my life,” she says. “I had no hope, but I still had dreams and knew I would have to leave to pursue them.” Zakreet, a trained railroad engineer, was working and living in Homs when the war forced him to flee to a refugee camp in Lebanon. He began putting his university education to work teaching English to young children in the camp. 10
“I was inspired at how, despite their circumstances, these kindergartners were so genuinely excited about learning,” explains Zakreet. “I saw how learning gave them hope for the future, just as it did for me.” Though their journeys to Canada took them on different perilous paths, both landed in the B.C. interior. Albitar came to Kelowna under the sponsorship of a local church and began English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Zakreet was one of five students (out of 500) to win a World University Scholarship that brought him to settle in Salmon Arm, where he enrolled in ESL and upgrading courses at the College. It wasn’t long before both students were acknowledged for their achievements in the classroom.
Rahaf Albitar.
In June 2017, Albitar was presented with the Kate Gilchrist Memorial Award, a fund set up in memory of ESL Department Chair, Kate Gilchrist, who passed away in 2012. Each year it is awarded to a student who demonstrates a combination of academic excellence and a determination to succeed. “Kate’s admiration of students from many different countries who emigrate and face the challenges of cultural and language differences was deep,” says Dr. Robert Huxtable, Dean, Arts and Foundational programs. “Her contributions to the lives of the many students she served are life-lasting, and the award is intended as a legacy of that devotion, in addition to the annual recognition of a deserving student.” Albitar was surprised and humbled by the honour. “I am so grateful for the award, but it is so much more than just money to me,” she says. “The financial assistance will help me continue my education, but it also represents all of the career opportunities it will open in my future.”
“I’m here to study, work hard and show that refugees want to contribute and give back to the country that welcomed us. Receiving this award shows me my hard work is paying off,” she adds. Their positive experiences at the College have inspired both students to continue their education – Albitar in Water Engineering Technology and Zakreet in Civil Engineering Technology. As the recipient of the Salmon Arm Golf Tournament Award, Zakreet is thankful the generosity of others enables him take the next step toward his lifelong goal of becoming an engineer. “There are no words for how grateful I am,” says Zakreet. “I’m incredibly excited for the next chapter. Being part of Okanagan College has been an amazing experience. I have made so many friends and have felt so welcomed. I feel connected to the community and feel at home here.”

setting a prime example Green builders make education more sustainable Finding the right match for their desire to give wasn’t as simple as Mike Banner and Laurel Robinson of priMe haBitat builders had planned. A certified Passive House builder, priMe haBitat is dedicated to creating a more sustainable planet by building high-performance, energy efficient custom homes and developments in the Okanagan.
Banner and Robinson have followed the journey of the SCMT students from the beginning to the recent graduation of the first program cohort in June 2017. Sloane More, a recipient of the priMe haBitat Builders Award in SCMT is encouraged by the example the company is setting for the industry.
“We live in a world of instant gratification and there are a lot of barriers preventing people to adopting more sustainable initiatives because they can’t see the longterm benefits and cost-savings,” says Banner. “We feel fortunate for the help that we’ve received in our careers and because of our great clients we are in a position to pay it forward by investing in the individuals who share our vision of a better world.”
We feel fortunate for the help that we’ve received in our careers and because of our great clients we are in a position to pay it forward by investing in the individuals who share our vision of a better world. ~ Mike Banner
Banner and Robinson were seeking to support an educational initiative with that same vision, when they stumbled across Okanagan College’s Sustainable Construction Management Technology (SCMT) program in an internet search. The first program of its kind in Canada, the SCMT diploma program gives students the skills to deliver true sustainable development as construction managers and technologists. The unique program ticked all the right boxes for priMe haBitat. “There weren’t programs like this when I was younger,” adds Banner. “Having the training and the resources available to these students only increased our desire to give.” After reaching out to the program chair, Dr. Amy Vaillancourt, and being impressed with the course curriculum, priMe haBitat set up five annual scholarships of $1,000 through the Okanagan College Foundation. “We love that 100 per cent of the money goes directly to the students,” says Robinson. “We see the sacrifices the students are making to pursue a brighter future for the planet – many of them gave up careers to return to school and have families to support.”
“They aren’t just talking the talk, priMe haBitat is walking the walk and leading by example to facilitate change in the industry,” says More. “It is an incredible experience to have a stranger invest in your future. But when the support comes from a business in the industry you are training to be a part of, and the donors are actively involved with the program, it really reaffirms I’ve made the right choice in my career path.” For Banner and Robinson, supporting students in the SCMT program has a long-term impact that goes beyond student success and will be beneficial to the construction industry and to the public’s perception of sustainable practices. “It’s incredible to see how much knowledge these students have, not just in home-building, but in all aspects of sustainable technology,” explains Banner. “They truly are the future and it is exciting to see the first graduates are now out in the workforce and implementing that knowledge.”

an appreciating investment Awards add up for business student Accountant Caleb Bunn will never have the chance to meet H.W. Galbraith, but he feels a great sense of appreciation to him, his family and the other families in Vernon that played a pivotal role in helping him achieve his dreams. A recent graduate of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program, Bunn attributes his success balancing family, work and education to the financial assistance of the five student awards he received, all established by, or in honour of, those who have been active in the community. Married during his first year of studies at the Vernon campus, Bunn’s family continued to grow over the course of his three years at the College. He graduated with distinction in January 2017 with a nine-month-old son and a second little one on the way. “Family is first,” says Bunn. “I’m so grateful for the support that allowed me to continue to pursue my educational goals, knowing my family was taken care of.” One of the awards that helped give Bunn the financial security to focus on his studies was from the Galbraith family. “Our family has benefited greatly from being brought up in the Okanagan and being able to establish our livelihoods here,” explains George Galbraith, who created the award in honour of his late uncle. H.W. Galbraith, a veteran of WWI and solicitor, lived in Vernon for 80 years and was active in civic affairs, including the B.C. Dragoons, Canadian Legion, Rotary Club of Vernon and the Okanagan Historical Society. His philanthropic spirit, including giving the first donation to help establish the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan (CFNO) in 1975, is something that inspires his nephew to continue the legacy of giving. “My uncle always emphasized the importance of higher education,” he adds. “Having the opportunity to support the next generation of community leaders and pass on his generosity is extremely fulfilling.” 14
That generosity to the CFNO came full circle when Bunn received two scholarships set up by the CFNO (through the Foundation) in honour of another active Vernon citizen, Pauline Legg. Bunn also received the Bill Seaton Mathematics Award and the Whitney Buggey Prize in Economics, both established by and named after former Vernon campus instructors to benefit students in their respective fields of study.
Having the opportunity to support the next generation of community leaders and pass on his generosity is extremely fulfilling. ~ George Galbraith “From my own experience as a student and teacher, I’ve seen the obstacles to student success from both sides,” says Whitney Buggey. “Giving back is a nice way to reward a student for the hard work and effort they’ve put in to creating their own success.” Buggey witnessed the transformation of the campus and the region surrounding it over his 30-year career at the College, as a professor and later Campus Principal. He presented his prize in person to Bunn at an awards reception last fall. “The donors have a deep love for their community and it’s incredible to meet them and hear a bit of their heart for the school and students,” says Bunn, who also met Galbraith and members of the late Seaton’s family. “Seeing that passion be continued on through their gift is a surreal experience to be a part of.”
