GET THE FOUNDATION YOU NEED
EARN A RED SEAL
No experience? No problem. Foundation programs provide students with pre-employment entry-level training and the basic knowledge and skills needed to enter into a particular trade. Most foundation program graduates receive credit for first level apprenticeship technical training that leads to employment.
Apprenticeship technical training (Levels 1 through 4) at Okanagan College combines traditional classroom instruction with practical hands-on experience in well-equipped shops and labs. The interprovincial endorsement you receive will give you employment mobility across Canada as a recognized journeyperson in your trade.

Aircraft Maintenance
TAKE FLIGHT MAINTENANCE
Stand behind every safe landing with a career as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. With a 9:1 student-to-instructor ratio in the program, you’ll get the attention and hands-on industry experience needed for a career where you will be responsible for the maintenance and flight-readiness of aircraft. Learn aviation law, theory of flight, air frame structures and systems, hydraulics, electrical and avionics systems. Your high attention to detail will be an asset to maintain, repair, overhaul, modify and test aircraft structural, mechanical and hydraulic systems on both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft. Okanagan College partners with Northern Lights College Aerospace Centre in Dawson Creek for the final 14 weeks of the program.
STRUCTURES Aircraft Structures Technicians are an integral part of aviation teams and are responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of aircraft structural fabrication and repairs. You’ll feel like you are already in the industry the moment you step into the classroom at our Kelowna International Airport hangar. This program will utilize your object-oriented abilities to teach you the practical skills of assessing structural damage and how to make repairs and modifications. Learn the theory behind the aircraft, including aerodynamics, aircraft components, system and structures and design and construction.
Program graduates go on to complete Transport Canada’s work experience and exam to qualify for their AME M or S License (recognized internationally).

Welding
TURN UP THE HEAT
WELDING FOUNDATION Get the training that opens the doors to employment. Using fusion, pressure, heat and strength, you’ll learn a diverse set of processes to cut, join and repair metals, including oxy acetylene, shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux core arc and gas tungsten arc welding. Your dexterity, exceptional hand-eye coordination and artistry will guide the fabrication and sculptural process as you develop technical skills in drafting, math, measurement systems and metallurgy. With a Red Seal Endorsement, your skills will be recognized worldwide, and this portable trade can take you from the top of a skyscraper, to the oil fields, to the depths of the sea.
METAL FABRICATOR Imagine having the specialized training to build something as large as a container ship or as simple as a swiveling chair. Metal Fabricators come to the rescue when tradespeople need a specialized part or component custom-built, regardless of how large or small. Our professional instructors will prepare you for the workforce with technical training in blueprint reading, mathematics, units of measurement and effective communication. Learn the skills and techniques to create and join metal components, including cutting, sawing, grinding, punching, fitting, bolting and welding.

PURSUE PERFECTION Whether it’s the restoration of classic cars, simple dent or scratch removals or the complete makeover of major fender benders, the expertise of our instructors and state-of-the-art tools and equipment provide the skills, knowledge and abilities that employers are seeking. Get hands-on training in our production-oriented flowing shops that simulate workplace environments. This program emphasizes the first and most important steps to a quality repair. Using your visual perception and problem-solving skills, you’ll gain confidence and quality experience in repairing and restoring damaged car and truck body parts, interior finishing, repainting surfaces, and the repair and replacement of automotive glass.

Service Technician REV IT UP Every day is different in this fast-growing and technically advanced trade. We’ll teach you the fundamental skills that people will trust with one of their most important assets – their vehicles. Dismantle and reassemble vehicles as you learn to inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair mechanical, electrical and electronic system components of cars and light trucks including engine overhauls, transmission rebuilds and tune-ups. Working with sophisticated computerized vehicle systems, you’ll gain an understanding of how to use technology to test, adjust and repair key vehicle components such as engines, steering systems, braking systems, drive trains, vehicle suspensions and electrical systems.

Heavy Mechanical THINK BIG Get the skills that keep industry moving. Learn to diagnose, service and repair a variety of machinery including crawlers, excavators, highway tractors and trailers. Our instructors will use their years of expertise to teach you the theory behind brakes, hydraulics, engines, suspension and how to apply those skills to on-and-off highway vehicles in our recently upgraded shop and 1,858 square-metre outdoor training space. With two different apprenticeship options, your educational road is endless with opportunity.

Recreational Vehicle KNOW IT ALL Learn all the trades in one trade – the RV Service Technician program provides the training and skills in more than 10 sub-trades used in the repair and maintenance of a modern RV, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, joinery, refrigeration, gas fitting, welding and appliance repair. Work on the exterior of vehicles from the top of ladders replacing roofs to small interior spaces fixing leaky faucets. Your critical thinking skills will be essential to troubleshooting mechanical, electrical and electronic issues including maintenance on appliances and battery systems. Strength and balance are required for fiberglass and body repairs, pinstriping and painting. You’ll be as mobile as the vehicles you work on, with certification that will give you opportunities to work across North America.

Electrician PLUG IN
Knowledge is power in this trade that will challenge your muscles and your mind. Our foundation program covers the practical and theoretical skills you’ll need for industry employment. You’ll master principles of electricity, safe work practices, math and science concepts while getting hands-on experience in our leading-edge labs inspecting, maintaining and repairing highly sensitive electrical and electronic systems. Pursue an apprenticeship path as a construction electrician and learn to work in a wide variety of buildings and facilities, on everything from lighting and climate control systems, to communication equipment and thousands of other specific tools and devices. Or choose to gain a high level of expertise as an industrial electrician that you’ll apply to the installation and service of motors, generators, heavy duty machines and other equipment. Through use of the most modern digital learning processes and technologies, our flexible Electrician Apprenticeship Level I Blended Program delivers a combination of face-to-face training and online learning, to reduce the amount of time you’ll be away from your workplace, home and family while maintaining the quality of instruction.

Construction BUILD YOUR FUTURE CARPENTER JOINER The hospital you were born in, the home you live in and the movie theatre you’re heading to tonight — nearly every building and its interior wood finishes – exist because of a carpenter. Get the skills to build structures from the ground up and to craft the furniture and finishes to go into those structures. Learn the basics of carpentry and joinery, from designing and building concrete forms and wood-frame projects to using dovetail, finger and miter joints to create cabinetry.
CARPENTER FOUNDATION Develop practical skills for the construction workplace in this program that introduces you to the use of hand tools, portable power tools and other equipment used by carpenters. Get hands-on experience with an array of common industry materials in the construction of a wood-frame project, including lumber, panel products, concrete, fasteners and hardware.
STUDIO WOODWORKING Become immersed in a hands-on environment to develop your hand, machine and joinery skills while learning the history and theory of woodworking, design basics, marketing concepts and safe work practices. You’ll use your artistry in advanced techniques such as curved parts, veneers, inlay, marquetry and banding, and have the opportunity to practice a variety of wood finishing techniques.

Mechanical Building
ALL SYSTEMS GO PLUMBING AND PIPING Our Plumbing and Piping Trades program combines the curriculum for Plumbing, Domestic/Commercial, Industrial “B” Gasfitting, Pipefitting/Steamfitting and Sprinkler System Installer. Learn how to install, repair, test and maintain commercial, industrial and residential plumbing and piping systems that move liquids, chemicals and gases. You’ll learn the basics of sprinkler system installations and working with propane and natural gas regulated products. Each trade utilizes similar skill sets and you’ll get hands-on training applying those skills in on-the-job conditions in our shops.
REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC The program will teach you to install, maintain, repair and overhaul residential central air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems.
Trades
SHEET METAL WORKER The Sheet Metal Worker program provides you with the skills to fabricate, assemble and install products made of durable and lightweight metals that become building siding, ventilation systems and almost anything else you can imagine. Your computer and mechanical skills will be put to the test in the operation of metalworking machines and cutting equipment. Manual dexterity and communication skills will be an asset to fitting and joining sheet metal parts in a variety of techniques.

THE VALUE OF ONE, THE POWER OF MANY Join the hundreds of women who have started successful careers in the skilled trades with sponsorship, support and resources of the Women in Trades Training (WITT) team. Get practical and theoretical experience in the 12-week Gateway to the Building Trades for Women. Make an informed decision about your career path in this hands-on exploratory program that introduces women to a variety of trades. WITT offers sponsorship opportunities for eligible and selected women who choose to further their education and earn credit for Level 1 technical training in a co-ed Trades Foundation program. You’ll have all the help you need – our WITT team also provides referrals, certificate training, industry mentoring, tutoring and encouragement.

WELDER TESTING AND UPGRADING For welders looking to upgrade, improve their techniques or become proficient in special processes, Okanagan College is a recognized welder testing agency for the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Branch. INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS Okanagan College partners with industry to provide workers with the skills they need to be competitive in the future. Our partnership with Taylor Pro Training Ltd., a recognized Industry Training Authority (ITA) trainer, offers students Class 1 Driver Training at their facilities. This experiential, full-time program covers the broad range of hands-on skills necessary to find employment as a transport truck driver and can be completed in just six weeks.

Following ITA registration, you can apply for your technical training online at www.okanagan.bc.ca/apprenticeship. Programs have multiple start dates throughout the year.
